C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to tho Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the TOLICE GAZETTE, a!' Letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaM, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, NOTICE. Stolen from the person of a lady, in Sunderland, on the evening of the lst instant: a gold Geneva Watch, No. 2324. Information to be given to Chief Constable Stainsby, Sun- derland, Durham.— Bow- street, April 7. Stolen from the person of Jane Wassall, of Priors Lee, at Shiffnal Railway Station, about 2 p. m. on the 3rd instant: a dark coloured leather Purse, with gilt lines and broad elastic band, containing a £ 5 Bank of England Note, eight Sovereigns, andj about £ 2 in Silver. Supposed by two men, one about 24 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, small light whiskers and moustache : dressed in light clothes. The other about 20 years of age, no whiskers or moustache; dressed in dark overcoat, and light plaid trousers. It is supposed that they booked by the 2 p. m. train for Wolver- hampton, Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Ivins, Wellington, or to Sergeant Meredith, Shiffnal, Salop. — Bow- street, - April 5. Stolen between 3 and 4 p. m. on the 28th ult. from the person of Mr. Henry Bagshaw, of Uttoxeter, grocer : a silver lever Watch, No. 27756, makers name ' J. W. Jennings, Birmingham.' Information to be given to Inspector Fenner, Town Hall, Uttoxeter, Staffordshire.— Bow- st., April 3. INFORMATIONS. and has been a soldier; dressed in dark coat, dark double- breasted vest, cord trousers, and soft felt hat. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Coward, Borough Police Office, Guildhall, Dorchester, Dorset, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, April 12. Absconded natives of Moselyhall, near Wolverhampton : the man is about 36 years of age, 5 feet high, stout build, no whiskers, bow legged, a collier ; dressed in plaid trousers, with a patch on one knee; the woman has a dark complexion and hair, cut short, scar on neck, and has two thumbs on the right hand; dressed in a black dress, with flounces. They are charged with stealing a black cloth Coat, nearly new ; two pairs of lace- up boots, one gutta- percha, nailed, the other leather; two Shirts, one flannel, the other striped cotton ; a Shift; a pair of woollen Stockings ; and £ 2. They left behind some old boots and shirts ; they are supposed to be in Hanley, Staffordshire, or Wigan, Lancashire. A Child, named EMILY HOLLAND, 7 years of age, left her, home, at 4' 30 p. m. on the 28th ultimo, at 110, Moss- etreet, Blackburn, and at 12 noon on the 30th ultimo, the mutulated body, without arms, legs, or head, was found in a field at Bastwell, in the borough of Blackburn. Afterwards on the same day the legs and feet were found in a drain at Lower Cunliffe, in the township of Rishton, about Wo miles from Blackburn. On the afternoon of the 28th ultimo, the deceased child left St. Alban's Sohool at a little after 4 o'clock, and on her way home, as she was passing the BVE6LAMY A1B BEEAKII0, Between 9 p. m. on the 31st ultimo, and 6 a, m. on the lst instant, the workshop of Thomas Hopley, Broxton, was broken and entered, and stolen thereia : a hand Saw;' a plough Plane; and one Square, fc- 11 marked ' T. Hopley'; and a tenon Saw, marked ' J. Griffithes.' Information to be given to Superintendent Wilson, Tattenhall, or to Sergeant Bethell, Malpas, Cheshire.— Bow- street, April 10. Between 3 and 5 p. m. on the 4th instant, the dwelling- house of James Pickard, Roughey, Horsham, was entered by means of breaking a square of glass in tho back kitchen window, and stolen therein : a gold, albert Chain, with a Locket attached, ' In memory of'; a spade Guinea, date 1787; a Half Guinea ; a small diamond Seal; a lady's long gold Chain, square links ; a silver Pencil case, with the days of the week on the top ; six old silver Coins, on a ring ; a silver junction of Birley- street and Mess- street, a man induced! The child was dressed in a ! 2?** felt hat '> h° ha4 tne appearance of having been a soldier, black coburg frock, with a fullied flounce, black velvet bat, with black feather in it, purple and white plaid neck shawl lilac printed pinafore, with, black leather belt round waist, fastened with a broken button, and blue ribbon rouud her head, fastening the hair, grey mixed woollen stockings, elastic- side diaper kid. boots, grey calico drawers, white flannel petticoat, red flannel stays, quilted with black thread, brown silk rep skirt, grey calico chemise, iu her pocket a white handkerchief, with purple border, small spots of blood on it, j on her neck a link of small blue, and white glass beads, none of which articles have been found. The above- mentioned man was from 35 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, proportionately made, long face, long thin nose, small dark eyes, cheek bones rather full, dark beard from lower side of face . to and round the chin, dark loDg hair, brown skin as if sun burned, round shouldered, and his neck sinking partly forward; dressed in a black billycock hat, with narrow brim, a dark mixture rough tweed cloth loose jacket, slit on hips, single- breasted, brown vest, dirty fnstain or cloth trousers, worn at the bottoms, clogs worn d9wn at sides, and leather on the top cut open. He walked rather lame. £ 100 reward will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person or persons who will give such information as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murderer or murderers; and Mr. Secretary Cross will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice, not being the person who actually committed the murder, who shall give such evidence as shall lead to the like result ; and the Mayor and Members of the Corporation of the said borough will give- » a further reward of £ 100 to any such person or persons who shall give such information and evidence as aforesaid. Information to be given to Superintendent Henderson, West Sussex Constabulary, Horsham.— Bow- street, April 7. Stolen by means of housebreaking at Bronmwyn Lead Mine, near Pontrhydfendigaid, Cardiganshire, between 7 p. m. ou the 28th, and 7 a. m. on the 29th ultimo : two Coats; a measuring. Tape ; a, long white flannel Shirt; a Handsaw; and 4 lbs. of Tallow Candles. Supposed by a Welshman, about 24 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches higb, ruddy complexion, dark hair, blue eyes, no whiskers or moustache, has a very small blue mark on left cheek, generally works as a labourer for short periods, at farm- houses. And a woman, who stays at a common lodging- house, in the same neighbour- hood, doing sewing work. They have been traced iu the direction of Rhaydr. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Lloyd, Aberystwith, or to P. C. Pierce, Pontrhyd- fendigaid, Strata Florida, Cardiganshire.— Bow- st., April 3. OAmi 8TEAXXHG. The Horse, Harness, and Cart stolen from Hitchin, as advertised in the Police Gazette of the 3rd instant, have been recovered at the ' Nag's Head' public- house, Wellington- street, Borough, and £ 1 reward is offered for information that will lead to the apprehension of JOHN, alias PERCY MOORE, who is charged on a warrant with stealing the same : 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches higb, dark hair, and no whiskers ; dressed in dark clothes. He has lived at Augustus- terrace, Landsdown- road, Clapham- road. Infor- mation to be* given to Inspector Young, Police Station, Hitchin, Herts,— Boii- street, April 10. Stolen on the night of the 7th July, 1875, from a field Description of JOHN FRAZER, lately agent for Messrs. Burbridge, Pritchard, and Bartlest, wholesale tea dealers, No, 14, Little Tower- street, London, at Newcastle- upon- Tyne, who is charged on a warrant with embezzling £ 200: he is about 33 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high,- very dark or black hair, whiskers, and moustache, sallow ; I complexion, stout person, leans a little forward when walking,"; and has a rather slow way of speaking; generally dresses in dark clothes, and is of respectable appearance; he is a native of Scotland, but resided for several years in London; he was seen in Liverpool on the 3rd instant, and it is supposed he will endeavour to leave the country. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Central Police Station, New- castle- upon- Tyne, Northumberland.— Bow- street, April 12. Charged a native of Cork, a medical assistant, about 25 yrs. of age, 6 feet- high, broad shoulders, military appearance, fresh complexion, brown hair, little whiskers, rather sandy, thin prominent roman nose, large ears, which project very much from the head. Information to be given at the Central Police Office, Sheffield, Yorkshire,— Bow street, April 12, Absconded from Middlesbrough on the 4th instant, charged with stealing a quantity of Gold Leaf : JOHN • HUGHES, an artist or decorator and native of London, about 45 or 50 years of age, stout make, dark complexion and hair, very little whiskers, lame of one leg aud walks with a stick, also crippled in one hand ; dressed in old dark clothes, black billycock bat, and old boots. Information to be given to Chief Constable Saggerson, Borough Poliee Station, Middlesbrough, Yorkshire, who holds a warrant and will pay all expenses on his arrest.— Bow- street, April 10. Escaped from custody at Corwen Railway Goods Yard, between 3 and 4 a. m. on the 24th ultimo, charged with larceny : EVAN EVANS, a porter, in the employ of the Great Western Railway Company, at Corwen, and at times assistant breaksman, between Corwen and Ruabos : about 30 years of age, abou^ 5 feet 6 inches high, stoutly built, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, no whiskers, and stoops a little ; he is a labourer, and has been working as a plate layer for several years ; dressed when he escaped in railway uniform of dark corduroy. Information to be given to Sergeant Williams, Corwen, Merionethshire, who holds the warrant for his apprehension.— Bow street, April 10. Charged on a warrant with stealing a Bicycle : W. GILLETT, about 22 years of age, 5 feec 6 inches high, fair complexion, light brown hair, and slight build; dressed in brown overcoat, dark undercoat, dark trousers, and black round hat. He has been in Margate, canvassing for a directory, called ' The Ramsgate, Margate, Canterbury, and Dover Directory,' published by Webb Brothers, publishers, No. 70, Park- street, Grosvenor- square, London. Informa- tion to be given to the Chief Constable, Margate, Kent.— Bow- street, April 10. Stolen about 4 p. m. on the 2nd instant, from the shop of James Henry Beddow, watchmaker, Hednesford, Stafford- shire : two silver open- face Geneva Watches, Nos. 2624 and 50965 ; a silver open- face lever Watch, 24562 ; a small silver Geneva Watch, gold dial, 69347; three silver open- face Geneva Watches, white dials, 66085, 48738, and 55165 ; two in Spit- lane, South Weald, the property of Mr. James silver verS ® Watches, 7701 and 31134; two silver Geneva aOBBISHY 1IB T « Snolen on the 6th instaat, on the Race Corse, Daventry, from the person of Mr. Bagg, Surgeon, of Priors Marston : a silver lever Watch, gold albert Guard attached, maker Nathaniel Hedges, Birmingham. And from the person of Joseph Wright of Everdon : a silver lever Watch, makers name on dial, ' John Jones,' Strand, and also on the cap over the works ' J. R. W.' on back of case outside. Information to be given at the Borough Police Station, Daventry, Northampton.— Bow- street, April 12. Stolen from the person of a gentleman at the Steeple Chases, Packington, on the 8th instant: a gold lever Watch, supposed No. 1865, has a gold radiated dial, and large black Manning : a bay nag Mare, 8 years old, 16 hands high, small white mark on near fore leg, above the knee, black mane and tail, chipped knees, wart on inside of off hind quarter, and near hind fetlock a little swollen; the mare was supposed to have been in foal when stolen, and may possibly be traced by her foal. A reward of £ 10 will be paid by the owner, on recovery of the mare, and conviction of the offender or offenders. Description of JOHN BROWN, of Winterborne, Steeple ton, Dorset, charged with stealing on the lst instant, a silver Watch ( recovered) from the dwelling- house of Martha Biggs, Fordington : 25 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fair complexion, brown hair, thin sandy moustache, flat nose, Watches, one jewelled in 8 holes, 2592, the other in 4 holes, 13148 ; a Boston American silver lever Watch, top plate jewelled, 29901 ; two silver Geneva Watches, 3304 and 7940, and several others ; a silver lever crystal watch, two glasses in back and one in front, plain dial, and winds up in front; a silver curb v atch Guard ; a six- barelled Revolver ; and a Suit of plaid Clothes. By ALBERT KRAUTH, a German, who was journeyman watchmaker for Mr. Beddow, and lodged in his house three weeks : 31 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches higb, black hair ( parted behind), whiskers, and moustache, never shaved, and very high forehead ; dressed in a pepper and salt cloth jacket and vest, small plaid, pockets cm hips, black cloth' trousers, hard black billycock hat, red " necktie, and elastic- side boots. He came from Philadelphia,, via Liverpool, seven months since; and has a relative, a watchmaker, in Guest- street, Hockley, Birmingham ; he also has friends at Tipton and Tunstall. Absconded from South Shields, on the 24th ultimo, charged on a warrant with embezzlement: LUKE READFORD, a brewer's clerk, 19 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh complexion, oval face, good looking, dark brown liair, pro- portionate build ; dressed in a dark grey suit, aiid round felt hat. Absconded, charged with having at Ely, on 30th ult., embezzled £- i 4s. Id., the monies of Mary Ann Seaber, of Mildenhall, Suffolk: HENRY BARKER, a farm labourer, about 28 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, light hair, small whiskers ; dressed either in corduroy or dark cloth trousers with stripe, sleeved vest, and chummy hat; he is hunch- backed and fond of drink; he was at Cambridge on 31st ult. and took train for Nottingham. Has probably a new coat on now, as he left his own at Ely with his mistress's horse and cart. Information to be given to Superintendent Smith, Ely, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, April 3. FELONIES. ( Not otherwise described). Absconded from Minchinhampton, Gloustershire, on the lst instant, charged with counselling and procuring Mary Ann Rose to administer poison to her illegitimate child at Minchinhampton on the 31stult. : CAROLINE GRANT, about 17 years of age, about 5 feet high, black hair, dark complexion, very thick lips, and cut mark down the forehead ; dressed iu old light print dress with large flounce, old brown jacket, old black hat trimmed with black and scarlet ribbon, old lace- up boots with patches on sides ; carried an old light shawl ; she is a native of Tetbury, Gloustershire. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Hanbridge, Stroud, Gloucestershire, who holds a warrant for her apprehension.— Bow- street, April 12. Description of GEORGE SCARRATT, charged on the 3rd ultimo, at Tewkesbury, with receiving Hay, knowing it to have been stolen : he is about 50 years of age, 6 feet high, dark complexion, dark brown h. air and whiskers ; generally dressed in a long dark coat, much worn, soft bowler hat, velveteen waistcoat, and corduroy trousers. He travels about the country with a pony and cart hawking earthenware. He is supposed to be in the pottery districts, Staffordshire, and is well known about Witney and Wychwood Forest, Oxford- shire. Information to be given to Sergeant Whitman, Tewkesbury, Gloucester, who holds a warrant for bis appre- hension.— Bow- street, April 5. inches high, fresh complexion, grey hair, and blue eyes, liaJ% small ' hard substance on the first finger of right hand, clv'qn shaved chin, is of gentlemanly appearance, and states that he is- an ironmorger, and resides at York, since he lias been in custody at Coleshill, he has written to a person in Reats- street, old Colly hunt- road, Manchester. Remanded at Lancaster, till the 17th instant: a tramp giving the name of GEORGE HASHLAM, alias JAMES h, pale dressed in brown vest and trousers, red and white plaid shirt, red plaid handkerchief, blue aud white necktie, grey stockings, elastic- side boots, and black soft billycock hat. In his possession white Cloth, were found three Door Keys and five pairs " of Stockings, one marked ' E. Sugden'; and a Glass marked ' T. Woolley, Dartmouth Hotel.' JAMES PICKLES, 48, Skinner- lane, Manningham, Brad- ford, 24 years of age, 5 feet lOf inches high, fresh complexion, grey eyes, light brown hair, sandy whiskers, slender figure, scar on back of left hand and thumb ; dressed in dark tweed coat and vest, dark mixed trousers, lace- up boots, white and brown check shirt, black scarf, and black billycock hat. In his possession were found 3 Door Keys, 1 Latch Key, and 1 Padlock Key. Information to be given to Superintendent Hedley, Police Station, Fenny Stratford, Bucks.— Bow- street, April 12. FBAVDS AND AGGRAVATED MISDEMEAMOiTB£ k Absconded from 301, Strand, charged with having obtained on 5th November last, £ 50 by Mse pretences : GEORGE REID, 45 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark complexion, hair and beard turning grey, small scar on back of neck, aud round shoulders; dressed generally in dark clothes, and high hat, of respectable appearance. He is supposed to have been convicted in 1868 or 1869, and was sentenced to 5 years penal servitude. Warrant issued. — Metropolitan Police, E Division, April 12. Description of SAMUEL NEWMAN, charged with obtaining several sums of money by false pretences, and who absconded from Great Bridge, Tipton, about the 3rd ult. : about 40 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, light complexion, fa r hair, no beard, large nose, several blue marks on the face, stout build ; he is a collier, and was at the time he abacouded one of the local secretaries of the West Bromwich district of the Amalgamated Association of Miners; he is fond very of betting, speaks with a loud voice, and generally carries his hands in his trousers pockets. Information to be given to Superintendent Holland, Police Office, Wednesbury, Stafford shire, who holds a wurrant for his apprehension.— Bow-, ' ' April 10. Absconded, charged with obtaining by false pretences, on the lst December last, the sum of .£ 350 : THOMAS SIDNEY BIRDIE RAVEN, late of 148, Strand, 34 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark complexion, brown hair and whiskers ; dressed respectable, and of gentlemanly appear- ance. Warrant issued.— Metropolitan Police, E Division, April 7 Description of a man, charged with obtaining £ 5 12s., at the Spread Eagle Inn, Nottingham, where he was staying, by a cheque on Godfrey's and Riddels Bank, Newark, where he had no account. A lawyer's black leather Bag was stolen from the lst class waiting room, at the Midland Railway Station, in Nottingham, on the 24th ultimo, containing a cheque Book and several Briefs, one being Taylor v. Taylor, marked Newton, solicitors, Newark ; the cheque in question was taken from the book, which was in the bag stolen, and belonging to Mr. Newton, solicitor, of Newark, He said he was a solicitor, and endorsed the cheque ' WILLIAM WARNER, 18, Union- street, Birmingham': he is 35 to 40 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inched high, sallow complexion, black whiskers and moustache, shaves on chin ; he is supposed to be following the circuit, and will probably put off more of the cheques Information to be given to Chief Constable Poyntz. Nottingham, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, April 7. Description of a man who is obtaining Goods from watchmakers, jewellers, and others, by means of false cheques on the Loudon and Westminster Bank, St James's Branch. It is believed he has in his possession a book containing about 100 Cheques, the last number used was 22673. He has given the names of Captain JAMES A. HAMMOND, ship ' Condor,' Victoria Docks, and Captain . T. W. MARS- DEN, ship ' Antelope' ( both false), 35 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, black hair, moustache, aud whiskers, dark eyes, and has the appearance of a ship's captain; dressed in dark suit, and fur cap. Information to be given to Superintendent Williamson, Detective Depart- ment, Great Scotland Yard, London, S. Description of CROSSLAND HINCHCLIFFE, Reg. No. 597, who is subject to police supervision, and failed to give notice of his intention of leaving the district of Glossop, as required by the Prevention of Crimes Act : about 37 years of age, 5 feet 3f inches high, brown hair, grey eyes, fair complexion, five scars on forehead, five on back, and two on right arm, lost right forefinger, and hairy chest. He was sentenced to 7 years penal servitude on the 14th July, 1869, at the Derby Assizes, for rape at Hadfield.
