C. 1 *#* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for ' the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all tetters addressed to the Editor mart be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from tho Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, INFORMATIONS. Information to be given to Superintendent Bent, Old Trafford, Manchester.— Bow- street, March 10. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING, The dead Body of a newly- born female Child was found in an entry at Railway Terrace West, at East Vale, near Longton, on the morning of the 9th ultimo. At the ooroner's inquest a verdict of ' Wilful Murder against some person or persons unknown' was returned. A reward of £ 50 will be paid by Her Majesty's Govern- ment to any person who shall give Buch information and evidence as shall lead to the conviction of the murderer or niurdereis, and the Secretary of State for the Home Depart- ment will advise the grant of Her '. Majesty gracious pardon to any accomplice, not being the actual murderer, who shall give such evidence as shall lead to a like result, Information to be given at any Police Station in the county of Stafford.— Bow- street, March 10. ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING. Further information respecting the arson at Bodenham, Herefordshire, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 10th inst.: the sweep, HENRY DALEY, is committed for trial at the assizes. The woman is still at large, she is a widow and come3 from Cranes- hill, Swansea, about 45 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, rough red fa. ee, and dressed in dirty shawl and dark bonnet. Information to be given to Super- intendent Dykes, Leominster, Herefordshire.— Bow- street, March 20. Any person who will give such information as will lead to the conviction of the person or persons who caused the destruction, by fire, of two barns situate at Waresley- green, Hartlebury, Worcestershire, in the occupation of Mr. John Harris, on the nights of the 9th and 10th instant, shall receive .£ 50 reward from Messrs. ROBBERY AID LAH. CENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person at the Steeplechases, Wye, on the 16th instant: a half- hunter gold Watch, maker ' Thos. Bennett, Dublin,' No. 2077 ; a silver hunter English lever Watch, initials ' A. A.' in old English on the case ; and a silver hunter Watch. Information to be given to Superintendent Noakes, Kent Constabulary, Askford.— Bow- st. March 20. Stolen from the person on the highway at Willaston, on the night of the lGth instant: a silver lever Watch, op'en face and cream- coloured dial with seconds hand, large hand a little bent. No. 6047, maker's name Woodrooffe, of Liverpool; also one Half- Sovereign and three Shillings, Supposed by three men : one dressed in a moleskin suit and dark cap ; another in blue serge jacket and dirty coloured trousers; and the other in corduroy trousers and vest, jacket, corduroy fronts with moleskin back and sleeves. Information to be given to Superintendent Egerton, County Hall, Abbey- street, Birken head, Cheshire.— Bow- street, March 20. Stolen from the person of a gentleman while being violently assaulted by several soldiers and civilians on the highway, near Preston, on the night of the 5th instant : a gold lever Watch with gold dial, has an inscription on inside case ' Presented to Sergeant- Major Wills, of the Darlington Volunteers', and had a gold Guard attached, to which was suspended a gold Locket, with Photograph of a Lady inside, and a small brass Boot; a gold finger Ring, set with blue stones; about £ 5 in Gold, and some Silver and Copper. Information to be given to Superintendent Webb, Garstang, Lancashire.— Bow- street, itarch 13. Stolen from the person with violence, at Miles Platting, at 9 p. m. 5th instant: a gold lever Watch, flowered case, gold dial and fingers, second hands, No. 33516,' S. H.' engraved inside outer case, and inside the inner case is ' scratched BURGLARY AMD H0TOE BREAKING. Charged with breaking into a shop at Wrexham, and stealing, therein, a quantity of leather for boots ; and a pair of upper Tops, closed : HENRY JONES, 30 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, no whiskers or moustache, full face, dark complexion, hair turning grey, short neck, round shoulders, and stout build ; dressed in shabby dark clothes, and soft bat, with a large brim ; he is a native of Oswestry, and is supposed to be in that neighbourhood, or at Shrews- bury. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Bradshaw, Wrexham, Denbighshire,— Bow- street, March 20. During the night of the 12th instant, the joiner's shop, belonging to Mr. Joseph Berrington, at Frodsham, was broken and entered and stolen therein : 1 tenon Saw, nearly new, marked ' J. B.'; I 12- inch Square, marked fJ. B.'; 1 6- inch Square, marked ' J. B.' ; 1 4- inch Square, marked ' J. W.'; 1 large Screwdriver, marked ' J. W.'; 4 double Plane Irons, new; 1 new Spokeshave ; 1 1 |- inch Paring Chisel; and 1 pair of Lancashire Compasses. Information to be given to Superintendent Mayho, Tarporley, Cheshire.— Bow street, March 17. Between 10 p. m. on the 13th and 6.30 a m. on the 14th instant, the dwelling- house of John Stapley, at Biddenden, was burglaiiously entered and stolen therein : one light brown waterproof Overcoat, maker ' Cooper, Box and Co.'; a second- hand black cloth Overcoat, two pockets at Bides, and one in left breast; a quantity of Tobocco and Cigars ; and 25s. in Bronze, in 5s. packets. Information to be given to Super- intendent Morgan, Police Station, Cranbrook, Kent.— Bow- street, March 17. Stolen by means of housebreaking between 1 and 4 p. m. on the 7th instant, the property of George Martin, a farmer, in the parish of Fletching, Sussex : a gold wedding Riug ; a small silver Thimble; a pair of steel Ear- rings; a pocket Flask ; a six- chamber Revolver ; a small pocket Pistol; six black handle Knives and Forks, handles rivetted, makers name on knives 1 Miles, Hastings'; three white- handle Knives and Forks; a rough black cloth Overcoat, velvet collar ; two black silk Neckties ; four coloured silk Hand- kerchiefs ; a drab stuff dress Skirt; four or five old Penny Pieces ; twenty- three Farthings ; a small quantity of silver Money; and a small carpet Bag, green with yellow spots. Information to be given to Superintendent Peerless, Uckfield, Sussex, or at any Police Station in East Sussex.— Bow- street, March 13. During the night of the 9th instant, the small ware shop belonging to Mr. Marsden, of Altrincham, was broken and entered and stolen therein : 36 yards of Needlework ; half- a- dozen lisle thread white Hose; 12 dozen plain and spotted Windsor; half- a- dozen grey merino Hose; half- a- dozen while ditto; 6 pairs of ladies Drawers; 3 Chemises; a night Dress ; 5 dozen pairs of Gloves ; aud £ 7 in Gold. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Steen, Altrincham, Cheshire.-— Bow- street, March 13. Further particulars respecting the breaking into a carpenter's shop, at Llanvair- Waterdine, Salop, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 9th ultimo, and the housebreaking at Burfield, Clun, Salop, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 8th instant: in the former case the hand Saw, the tenon Saw, aud the Tool Basket ; and in the latter, the Jacket, Vest, and Handkerchief are recovered, the offender is still at je. He is a returned convict named JOHN PRICE, alias JACK THE TEMPLE, 55 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, fair complexion, and sandy whiskers ; he is a tramp, begs at farm houses, and sleeps in out- buildings. Information to be given to Superintendent Caswell, Church Stretton, or to Sergeant Williams, Bishops Castle, Salop. — Bow - street, March 13. Description of a man charged with stealing a Pony, Trap, and set of Harness, which he hired for a few hours on the 13th instant from Mr. Smalley, Fish and Quart Inn, Burton- on- Trent : he is about 40 years of age, very slight build, 5 feet 9 or 10 incl° s high, sandy whiskers and moustache, and is very pale ana sickly looking. The Pony is a grey one, newly- clipped, aged, umds high, and has a long mane and tail. The Trap is a small oak- coloured one, and the Harness nearly new and silver mounted. He was seen with the Pony and Trap the following day, near to, and going in thedirection of Derby. Information to be given to Superintendent Bowen, Burton- on- Trent, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, March 17. Stolen on the llth instant, from a stable at Priestfield, near Bilston, Staffordshire : a black Mare, about 14 J hands high, aged, white star on forehead, tail cut level with hocks, and in fair condition; and a set of brass- mounted Harness. Supposed by two Irishmen of the following description, one about 50 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, short grey whiskers; dressed in a long dark coat and elastic akLfcioots. Tho other about 36 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches jj^ Kblack whiskers ; dressed in moleskin trousers, cap andfcWwjpirlt is supposed that they will make their way for Birkenhead or Liverpool. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent MeCrea, Police Office, Bilston, Staffordshire.- » Bow- street, March 15. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen from a livery stable in Colchester, on the 14th instant: a grey Cob, aged, 14 hands high, dark hair on knees, mark round near fore leg just above the hoof from the cut of a rope, and stands over hind legs; an oxford Cart, painted black, picked out with red; black silver- mounted Harness, also a Rug and Whip. By a man, supposed to be named JOSEPH JOSEPHS, alias HENRY BEAUMONT, about 5 feet 5 inches high, dark hair and moustache, no whiskers, florid complexion, dark eyes; dressed in dark plaid coat and vest, light leather breeches, high top boots, felt hat. Infor- mation to be given to Head Constable Mercer, Borough Police Office, Colchester, who holds a warrant for his appre- hension.— Bow- street, March 20. Description of a man, a boat hauler, who has absconded from Pontefract, charged with Horse stealing : he is supposed to belong to Rochdale ; is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark complexion, eyes, hair and moustache ; dressed in a tweed waistcoat with sleeves, and pieces in the sides to make it wider, moleskin trousers, navvy boots, and cloth cap. Infor- mation to be given to Inspector Boshier, West Riding Constabulary, Pontefract, Yorkshire,— Bow- street, March 20. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Absconded from Stockcross on the 17th instant, charged with stealing: a pair of new lace- up waternreof Boots; a black cloth Coat,, much worn ; and a flag Basket ( none of which has at present been recovered): a ^ Camping blac'^ rrith, who had been employed on the premises, a native of Bunhaffi, near Reading, 45 years of age, short and stout, pale face, dark hair, full dark beard and moustache, and right knee joint stiff; dressed in the stolen coat, corduroy trousers, and thick boots. Information to be given to Superintendent Bennett, Police Office, Newbury, Berks.— Bow- st., March 20. Absconded on the 16th instant, from Great Titchfield- street, St. Marylebone, embezzling £ 11 4s. 6d. : a man, 21 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes, and of respectable appearance; dressed, in blue chesterfield overcoat, blue diagonal under coat, dark mixture vest and trousers, and round felt hat.— Metropolitan Police-, E Division, March 20. Description of ELIZA BECKWITH, alias BEEVERS, and ELIZA SHACKLETON, who absconded from the home at Wakefield, on the 11th instant, charged with stealing Wearing Apparel and Money : Beckwith is 21 years of age, about 5 feet higb, dark brown hair, brown eyes, stout make, dark complexion, two moles on throat, mole on right cheek, lost several teeth from upper and lower jaw, ears pierced, a factoryhand, and a native of Leeds. Shackleton is about 20 years of age, about 5 feet high, light brown hair, blue eyes, stout made, fresh complexion, full face, and a native of Staffordshire. Both dressed when they absconded in blue and white cotton dresses, green plaid shawls, white aprons, black straw bonnets, trimmed with black and white cotton strings, lace- up boots, under clothing stamped ' W. R. H,' Nos. 29 and 42. 10s. reward will be paid for the apprehen- sion of each. Information to be given to Chief Constable, Chipstead, Borough Police Office, Wakefield, Yorkshire, who holds a warrant for their apprehension.— Bow- st., March 17. Stolen on the 28th ultimo, from a dwelling- house in Derby : a silver Watch ( recovered), by HENRY SMITH, a cooper and native of Burton- on- Trent, about 26 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, stoutly built, dark complexion, whiskers and moustache; dressed in dark grey coat and vest, and corduroy trousers; and has worked at Messrs. Phillips's brewery, Northampton. Information to be given to the Head Constable, Derby, who holds a warrant for his appre- hension.— Bow- street, March 17. Description of JAMES SARTLE, a tramping tailor, charged with stealing a Coat and Vest, at Bromyard, on the 7th instant, recovered : about 45 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, swarthy complexion, slight build, small whiskers and moustache turning grey, knock- kneed ; dressed in a black coat and vest, light tweed trousers, high black hat, and old boots. He may be found at tailor's shops, common lodging- houses, low public or beer- houses. Information to be given to Superintendent Ovens, Police Station, Bromyard, Herefordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Boio- street, Marcli 17. Stolen from a dwelling- house at Kersley, near Bolton- le- Moors, on the morning of the 12th instant: a silver lever Watch, with gold hands, No. 1427, nearly new ; and 403. in Silver. By a male lodger, 19 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, brown hair, sallow complexion, grey eyes, slender build, and right knee contracted, causing him to walk very lame ; dressed in a blue pilot overcoat, black coat and vest, shepherd plaid trousers, black billycock bat, and elastic- side boots, information to be given to Superintendent Holland, Town Hall, Little Bolton, Lancashire.— Bow- street, March 17. Description of MALACHI NUGENT, a native of Northwich, who absconded on the 12th instant, charged with stealing an Overcoat ( recovered); heis23yrs. of age, 5 ft. 1 in. high, rather inclined to be stout, brown hair and eyes, full face, and stoops a little when walking; he was born in England, but of Irish parents; dressed in an old brown coat, with a hole recently burnt in one slseve, moleskin trousers, t an old brown cap with a button on the top, and wears clogs. Information to be given to Superintendent Rowbottom, Middlewich, or Inspector JDutton, Northwich, Cheshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 17. Absconded, charged with stealing a Bill of Exchange, value £ 98 15s.: BARON GREZZA DE SMOSKEVY, 28 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, pale complexion, brown hair, small dark moustache, and cast in both eyes ; dressed in brown ulster coat with cape, dark mixture suit under, and high hat; of gentlemanly appearance, a native of Hungary, and speaks several languages fluently. Warrant issued.— -— Metropolitan Police, E Division, March 17. Stolen on the lst instant, from Worcester Park, near Kingston, Surrey : four travelling Rugs ; and a set of Horse Clothing, marked ' J. P.' By JAS. WESTCOTT, a coach- man, 28 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, sallow complexion, dark brown hair and moustache, and scar on upper lip ; dressed in a pilot overcoat, grey trousers, and low black hat. His mother resides at Topsham, near Exeter, and he has a sister at Portsmouth, where he is likely to go.— Metropolitan Police, V Division, March 17. Description of JOSEPH COX, charged with stealing from his lodging at Rodley, near Gloucester, on the 6th inst. : £ 2 in Gold, an old grey Topcoat, light velvet colour, torn under the arms ; ablack cloth Jacket, nearly new; an old black Waistcoat, three or four buttous off; a white Hat ; and a Muffler. He is about 20 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fair complexion, small blotches on his face, large nose, and stout build ; dressed in a dark coat and dark plaid trousers, watertight boots with a hole in toe of one of them, and black jimcrow hat. He was traced to Gloucester on the 6th and to Tewkesbury on the 7th instant; he then left in the direction of Worcester, and is supposed to be seeking • work as a labourer or navvy. He was in company with a short stout man, supposed to be an Irishman. Information to be given to Superintendent Chipp, Coleford, or to Sergeant Wood, Newnham, Gloucestershire, who holds a wariant for his apprehension.— Bow street, March 17. Description of a man, charged with stealing a cord Jacket, man's size ; a cord Vest; a cloth Cap ; and three Sovereigns : he is 25 years of age. 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, dark complexion, dark hair and whiskers, front tooth in tipper jaw on the left side projecting, marked with letter ' D.' on left breast; he is a horse driver on the Cheshire and Lancashire Canals, where he is well known. Information to be given to Superintendent Steen, Altrincham, Cheshire.— Bow- street, March 15. Stolen from a dwelling- house at Wauldham, Kent, on the 25th ultimo : a pair of dark tweed plaid Trousers and Vest; a blue cloth pilot Jacket with velvet collar ; a white cotton Shirt, three Collars, a pair of worsted Stockings, a Necktie, aud a pair of elastic- side^ Shoes with buttons. By a man who lodged at the house, about 50 years of age, 5 ft. 4 inches high, sallow complexion, grey hair and whiskers, and nose has been Broken ; dressed in old black coat, black billy- cock. kat, and twill or fustian overalls. He is a jobbing gar- diner, and carries a basket with tools used for cutting trees. Information to be given to Superintendent Coppinger, Kent Constabulary,. Chatham.— Sow- street, March 15. Stolen between the 8th and 11th instant, from a drawer in a bed- room, at the ' Horse aud Jockey' Inn, Ashbourne : a gold lever Watch, No. 25468, maker J. Hill, Newcastle, with a gold albert Chain attached, snake pattern; and a common Key. By a man who had been lodging- in the house : he is 35 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, broad set, dark brown hair and moustache, sallow complexion ; dressed in black sammy hat, blue coat and vest, light trousers, with brown stripe, white scarf, with red spots, and new elastic- side boots ; represented himself to be a saddler in search of employment. A reward of two Guineas will be paid to a. ny person giving such information as will lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the watch and chain. Information to be given to Superintendent Whieldon, Ashbourne, Derbyshire.— Bow- street, March 15. Stolen from a Temperance Hotel in Bolton, on the morning of the 10th instant: a pair of elastic- side Boots; two pairs of lace- up Boots, with brass eyelet holes, nearly new ; and a brown cloth Overcoat, brown velvet collar, lined with black Italian cloth, and marked ' J. Walker, Eisbergate, Preston' By a man, who lodged at tho hotel one night; about 34 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, slender make, long thin face, dark complexion, and small whiskers and moustache; dressed in a brown reefer jacket, dark vest bound with braid, fustian trousers rather dirty, mixture cloth cap with a hock in front, and strong blucber shoes ; had the appearance of a mechanic. Information to be given to Chief Constable Beech, Bolton, Lancashire. — Bow- sweet, March 13. Description of JAMES GREENWOOD, a canvasser for advertisements for newspapers, charged on a warrant • with embezzlement: about 40 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, slender, fair complexion, small face, small piercing eyes, dark brown hair, whiskers, and moustache, jaunty style, and quick in conversation ; dressed in black frock coat ( generally buttoned very close), waistcoat, and trousers. It is sup- posed that he went to London on the 3rd inst., accompanied by his wife, who is tall, fair complexion, and thin; also two boys, aged 14 and 6 years. Information to be given to Superintendent Law, Borough Police Station, Guildford, Surrey.— Bow- street, March 13. dressed respectably; formerly kept a chemist's shop in Tottenham Court- road. Warrant issued. — Metropolitan Police, E Division, March 20. GEORGE HENRY BROUGHAM PIKE, who absconded from Devizes, charged with obtaining Money by false pretences, advertised iij the Police Gazette of the 13th instant, has been apprehended at Wimbledon. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Woodman, Wilts Con- stabulary, Devizes.— Bow- ttreet, March 20. Description of CHARLES FISHER, alias BARNETT, in custody, charged with obtaining Goods under false pretences, & c. : 26 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, brown hair, pale complexion, hazel eyes, sharp round features, slight build, whiskers shaved off, small fair moustache, American eagle, Prince of Wales' feathers, aud ' E. C. F.' on left arm, representation of a tropical tree, heart, and ' In Memory of a Friend' on right arm ; is wearing a regimental white cotton shirt," 75 issue, name cut out, an artillery flannel shirt, stamped on breast with ' D. Cullen,' and an officer's forage cap. He states he served in the 23rd Regiment, D Company, from which he was discharged in 1875. Information to be given to the Superintendent of Police, Town Hall, Newport, Mon- mouthshire.— Bow- street, March 17. Description of JOSEPH SCOTT, a travelling jeweller, who is charged with obtaining, by false pretences, a diamond Ring ( recovered) from Mr. George Carnell, Bank- street, Maid- stone, in June last: between 35 and 40 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, florid complexion, and has a rather Jewish cast of countenance, and stutters a little; supposed to be dressed in black clothes and high black hat. He is said to be well known in Birmingham, and to have friends residing at St. John- street- road, Clerkenwell; Middleton- street, Clerken- well ; Bayham- street, Camden- town ; and St. Thomas- street, Hackney, London. Information to be given to Chief Consta- ble Gilford, Maidstone, Kent, wko holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- si., March 13. Description of a man who gave the name of F. J. STURPART, charged with obtaining £ 1 15s. 6d. by false pretence from the Rev. W. A. Goodacre, of Alphington, on the lst instant; from 30 to 35 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, fair complexion, sandy whiskers, shaved under the chin, walks erect, and of good address ; dressed in light suit of clothes, very dirty. He lodges at low public- houses. He was accompanied by a woman, bald, and wearing a chenille hair net, about 26 years of age, dressed in brown linsey dress, black cloth short jacket, and black straw hat, trimmed with black ribbon ; and a little girl, about 6 years old, with light hair. He is g « ng about the country obtaining money from clergymen, saying he is a neglected son, educated at the Blue Coat School, London, and wants money, to go to different places to see his mother.
