No. 5781 FRIDAY, JANUARY 28, 1876. , ftsOtSce.— It ia requested that all communications lor the purpose of obtaining or giving infsrmation respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should bo appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, ali betters addressed to tho Editor mnst be prepaid, otherwise tbe insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Desertera from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from tho Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. Stolen on the 10th instant, from the person of a gentle- man in Manchester : a gold keyless open- face Watcb, 16- size, double roller, centre seconds, chronometer balance, brequet pendulum spring, jewelled throughout, case has engraved on the back a wreath of laurels with monogram 1 J. D.' enclosed, maker ' Karl Zimmerman, Liverpool,' on upper plate. A reward of £ 10 will be paid by the owner upon the apprehen- sion and conviction of the thief or thieves and recovery of the watcb. Information to be given at the Detective Office, Cheapside, Manchester, Lancashire.— Bow- street, January 21. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING- On the 24th instant, the body of a newly born male child was found in a manure heap, near the Railway Station, Tewkesbury, with a piece of calico tied twice round the neck, the body was wrapped in a part of a female's night dress, the outside wrapper being a large peice of light glazed paper, 4 feet by 3 feet 3 inches, and figures upon it, such as are used in draper's shops. At the coroner's inquest, a verdict of * Wilful Murder against seme person or persons unknown' • was returned. Information to be given to Superintendent Day, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.— Bow- street, January 28. On the morning of the 21st instant, the Body of a newly- born male Infant,' was found wrapped in brown paper, in Sinnock's- square, Hastings. At the coroner's inquest, a verdict of ' Wilful Murder against some person or persons unknown,' was returned. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Glenister, Town Hall, Hastings, Sussex.— Bow- street, January 26. BURGLARY AMD HOUSE BREAKING Stolen on the 20th instant, by means of house- breaking, at Ditcheat: a black cloth frock Coat, new, with black striped lining ; a new pair of black cloth Trousers, with a small darn in one leg, close below the knee near the seam ; a best black Jacket and Vest; a black bowler Hat; a cashmere Shawl, white, intermixed with other colours, with white fringe and border; and a Church Service, with ' Jane Channing' written in it. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Bisgood, Glastonbury, or to Sergeant Williams, Shepton Mallet, Somersetshire. — Bow- street, January 26. On the 30th November, 1875, the lockup shop of Messrs. Barwick Brothers, watch manufacturers and jewellers, Sheep- street, Skipton, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : about twenty- five gold Mourning Rings, forty- five ladies' gold Gem Rings, forty gold Signet Rings, twenty gold Alberts, eighteen gold Necklets, twenty- five silver English lever Watches, six gold English lever Watches, forty silver Swiss Watches, ten gold Swiss Watches, some of which bear Barwick Brothers' name and address, and a c[ uautity of gold Brooches, including a large cameo brooch. Supposed by two men of the following description : JOHN SYKES, alias THOMAS LEONARD, alias COCKNEY JOHNNY, 28 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark complexion and hair, scars on left side of forehead, last residence Birkenhead ; dressed in a mixture suit ar d blue cloth overcoat. DANIEL McELIAY, alias SCOTCH DAN, 28 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches higb, sallow complexion, dark hair inclined to curl, is a printer, well educated, last residence Leeds. A reward of £ 25 will be paid to any person giving such in- formation as will lead to the apprehension of the offender or offenders and recovery of the property. Information to be 9 inches high, slender build, dark sallow complexion, black curly hair, black whiskers and moustache, black eyes, sharp features, bow legged, and appears to be weak in the knees when walking ; dressed in a dark russet overcoat, dark coat, dark grey vest and trousers, and a tall deerstalker hat; he ia a native of Betley, near Newcastle- under- Lyne. Information, to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Oswell, Stafford, or to Sergeant Barrett, Police Station, Penkridge, Staffordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- street, January 28. Stolen on the 24th instant, from a dwelling- house in Gloucester- street, Farringdon: a black leather Bag, containing ten pairs of dentist's Forceps, Scalers, Stoppers, gold Stopping, model Trays, composition hand Glass, and Teeth, the property of Mr. Butler, dentist. Information to be given to Superintendent Reece, Constabulary Office, Farringdon, Berks.— Bow- street, January 28. Absconded on the 25th instant, from Sun- street, Shore- ditch, stealing £ 35 : a man, 31 years o: 6 feet high, dark complexion and hair, beard on chin moustache dark brown ; dressed in dark check pattern shooting jacket, blue Scotch caj) with peak, is a porter, and formerly a private in the 69th Foot.— Metropolitan Police, G Division, January 28. Stolen on the 21st instant, from 5, Kensington Gore : a gold Chatelaine, ornamented with diamonds and pearls. By a woman, 30 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, hair, and eyes; dressed in black jacket and bonnet, and side - spring boots.— Metropolitan Police, B Division, January 28. Stolen frcm a vessel in the harbour of Berwick- on- Tweed, on the 24th instant: a dark blue shooting Coat, with velvet collar, half worn. Supposed by a youth, about 16 yrs. of age, broad red face, and reddish hair; dressed in gutta percha waterproof coat, dirty coloured trousers, lacp- up boots, wideawake >. at, and leather leggings; carried a print Lag, with some clothes in it, and is of dirty appearance. He left Berwick- on- Tweed early on the 24th instant, and is sup- posed to have gone South. Information to be given to Head Constable Garden, Berwick- on- Tweed, Northumberland.— Bow- street, January 20. Stolen from the quartermaster's stores, Maidstone Barracks, sometime during the night of the 22nd instant: a plaid Coat and Vest; a blue serge Waistcoat and pair of Trousers; an old black Suit, much worn ; a brown shooting Suit, little worn, by carrying a gun on the shoulder ; an old black shooting Suit, much worn ; several pairs of Socks ; the TORGERY. Description of WILLIAM LEEK, who is charged on a warrant with forging Bills of Exchange to the value of £ 75, at Harrogate, on the 15th and 25th November last, and who absconded from Harrogate, on the 10th instant : 32 years of age, 5 feet 5J inches high, dark complexion, sup- posed grey eyes, long wavey black hair, slightly streaked • with grey, thin black whiskers, moustache, and beard, a whitesmith, last resided at Harrogate, of imperfect education, long face, high cheek bones, round shouldered, and walks with his bead hanging down ; dressed in black serge cloth coat, with two pockets outside, fancy cloth double- breasted vest, black ground with purple diamond spots, chocolate or shaded brown trousers, black silk necktie, soft black billy- cock hat, and lace- up boots. He frequents theatres, music halls, negro entertainments, & c. A reward of £ 5 will " be paid for his apprehension. Stolen from different persons in Bolton on the lst inst. : 1 silver English lever Watch, No. 20249, with engine- turned cases. On the 12th instant: a gold Scarf Pin, in the form of a greyhound's head. On the 14th instant : 1 silver lever Watch, No. 6016, with engine- turned cases and plain seconds. On the 22nd instant : 1 silver lever Watsh, No. 3353, with the name o£ ' Robt. Ratcliffe' engraved on the outside case ; and a silver lever Watch, No. 41519, maker's name * J. J. Hargraves, 108, Bold- street, Liverpool.' On the 21st instant: a silver Geneva Watch, No. 38C34, or 5434. Information to be given to Chief Constable Beech, Bolton, Lancashire.— Bow- street, January 26. Stolen from the person of Elijah Atkins, at Hands- worth, about 10- 30 p. m. on the 21st instant: a gold keyless open- face Watch, chronometer balance, jewelled throughout, engine- turned case, white dial, has ' E. A.' engraved on the back, No. 30904. A reward of £ 5 will be paid by the owner on recovery of tho Watch and conviction of the offender or offenders. By four deserters of the following description : JOHN MURPHY, private of the 50th Regiment of Foot, 21 years of age, 5 feec 5£ inches high, fresh complexion, and dark brown hair ; dressed in the stolen clothes ; enlisted 22nd of January, 1875, at Woolwich, native of Lambeth, Surrey, and a labourer by trade. THOMAS KING, private of the 97th Regiment of Foot, 23 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, and dark eyes; dressed in part of the stolen clothes ; enlisted 20th March, 1871, at West- minster, and was born at Bethnal- green. GEORGE STEPHENS, private of the 50th Regiment of Foot, 20 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches higb, fair complexion, brown hair, and grey eyes ; dressed in part of the stolen clothes ; enlisted 31st December, 1873, at Westminster, born at Notting- hill, London, and a groom by trade. THOMAS. CARTER, private of the 50th Regiment of Foot, 23 years of age, 5 feet 7\ inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, and tattooed on right arm ; dressed in part of the stolen clothes ; enlisted lst October, 1874, at Maidstone, born at St. John's, Chatham, and a labourer by trade. Information to be given to the Head Constable, Police Office, Maidstene, Kent.— Bow- street, January 26. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen from a field at Kinley, on the 22nd instant: three cross- bred tup Lambs, between the Shropshire Southdown and Welsh, white faces and long tails ; the property of Thos. Jervis. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Ivins, Wellington, or to Sergeant Merricks, Oaken Gates, Salop.— Bow- street, January 28. Description of R. P. G. LORD, charged with horse steal- ing : 25 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches higb, sallow complexion, black hair, slight black whiskers and moustache, and of gen- tlemanly appearance ; is a veterinary surgeon and horse dealer, and was formerly in bussiness at Jermyn- street, Hay- market, and White Horse- street, Piccadilly. Information to be given to Superintendent Williamson, Detective Depart- ment, Great Scotland- yard, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Metropolitan Police, A Division, Jan. 26. Absconded on the 10th instant, charged with Sheep stealing at Elton : WILLIAM MARLEW, labourer, of Elton, 25 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, grey eyes, light hair, and large nose ; dressed in an old black frock coat, light fustian trousers, and old black billycock hat. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Barker, Normancross, Peterborough, Northamptonshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, January 24. Stolen during the night of the 14th instant, from a stable in Heywood- street, Manchester : a bright brown Mare, rising 7 years old, 14 hands high, two white spots on back, white star on forehead, one hind foot white, and was was partly clipped. By a youth, 15 years of age, short and stout, pale- looking, dark brown hair, and dark eyes ; dressed iu a black velvet jacket, sleeved cord vest, dark trousers, woven woollen cap with knot on top, and clogs; stated he came from Liver- pool. A reward of £ 5 will be paid by the owner upon his conviction and recovery of the mare. Information to be given at the Detective Office, Cheapside, Manchester, Lanca- shire.— Bow- street, January 21. Description of ISAAC CASS, charged with stealing a Horse, the property of Thomas Olo Renshaw, on the 14th inst.: 41 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches higb, light brown bair, is a groom, or horse dealer,- and has been convicted of horse stealing at Hull and Sheffield. Absconded from Penkridge, about the 7th instant; [ embezzling £ 5 18s. the monies of Mr. Henry B. Burslem : WILLIAM MOORE, a tailor, 36 years of age,' 5 feet 8 or Stolen on the 22nd instant, from Freeman- street, Spltal- fields : a large leather Bag, containing 23 pairs of gold Ear- rings, 30 ladies' gold Neck Chains, 18 gold Albert Chains, 24 Keeper Rings ( stamped 9 carat), 1 silver Snuff Box, 2 silver - mounted Scent Bottles, 18 Mourning Rings, 36 Wedding Rings, 6 Scarf Pins, 3 lady's gold Geneva Watches, 24 Watch Guards, 2 small Bells, 12 pairs of silver Ear Wires, 36 steel Hands ( 12 second, 24 minute), and a quantity of bead Neck Chains. By two men, one, 30 years, of age, 5 feet 8 inches higb, dark complexion and hair, aad small black moustache ; dressed in black frock coat, striped trousers, side- spring boots, and soft felt hat. Richards, Rhymney Iron Works, Monmouthshire, who Fread, Kent Constabulary, Dartford.— Bow- street, Jan. 24, Absconded on the 20th ultimo, from Buxted, Sussex, taking with him the. following Watches, which he had to repair: an open- faca silver English lever Watch, maker supposed Crundell, Tunbridge Wells ; a silver lever hunting Watch, engine- turned cases, maker William Hislop, Tun- bridge Wells and Clerkenwell, London, No. 22725 ; a single- case silver lever Watch, enamelled face, black Roman figures, black hands, capped and jewelled in all holes, a railway engine, with steam blowing off, painted red on face, and the words ' Railway Timekeeper' underneath in red letters, and ' Johnson, Liverpool,' across the face, compen- sation balance, No. 1451, maker Johnson, Liverpool;' a silver Geneva lever Watch, maker Millett, No. 4213. A watchmaker, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, fresh complexion, heavy sullen countenance, dark eyes, dark red hair, full bushy whiskers and moustache, and well built; dressed in a black waterproof overcoat, black frock coat underneath, higli- crowned brown felt hat, and a pair of long patent leather leggings, Information to be given to Superintendent Peerless, East Sussex Constabulary, Uckfield. - Bow- street, January 24. Stolen on the 17th instant, from the vicarage House, Kimble, near Aylesbury : a pair of side- spring Boots, tips on heels, and in good repair. By a tramp, who states he is a lithographer, 22 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, dark hair, cut short; dressed in dirty old dark- coloured clothes, and billycock hat, high hi crown ; he is wearing the stolen boots. Information ts be given to Superintendent Denson, Aylesbury, Bucks.— Bm- stroet, January 21. Stolen on the 17th instant, from a Coach house at Great Kimble Vicarage: a pair of side- spring Boots ( man's size), and tips on heels. By a tramp about 25 years of age, 5 ft. 4 or 5 inches high, and dark hair and moustache ; dressed in dirty dark coloured old clothing, and black hard felt hat. Information to be given to Inspector Howes, Wendover, Tring, Herts.— Bow- street, January 21. Absconded on the 20th instant, from Wrexham, charged with stealing a blue monkey Jacket, blue and black flannel lining, pockets on either side, and one inside of left breast; a brown twilled Umbrella, with a tin ferrule on the handle ; a pair of elastic- side Boots, buttons on front, man's size : a man, 22 or 23 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 iuches high, sandy holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bm- street, Jan. 24. Obtained on the 17th instant by fraud, from World's End livery stables, Chelsea : a black Mare, 15 hands 1 or 2 inchea high ; new plain plated Harness ; and a stanhope Phaeton, painted black, picked out with tan, monogram on back, maker Hart, Bond- street. By a man, 49 years of age, 5 feet 10 iuches high, fair complexion, dark whiskers and moustache; dressed in pea jacket, dark trousers, and Oxford hat. A frequenter of billiard rooms.— Metropolitan Police, T Division, January 21. Obtained 27s. by fraud, at Preston : a man, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, slender, light complexion, no whiskers or moustache, bald head, cast in each eye ; dressed very respectably, ring on each hand, sleeve links, gold studs, of very good address. Information to be given to Head Constable Oglethorpe, Borough Police Station, Preston, Lancashire.— Bow- street, January 21. Absconded from their bail, charged with fraud and conspiracy : WILLIAM HENRY WALTER, 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, sallow complexion, hazel eyes, slight black hair and moustache, and long thiu face. EDWARD MURRAY, 30 years of age, 5 feet inches high, fair complexion, hair ( curly), moustache, and whiskers light, brown eyes. Both dressed respectably, and are known to betting men. Warrant issued. Information to be given to Superintendent Williamson, Detective Department, Great Scotland - yard, London, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, A Division, January 21. similar offences. Information to bs given to Superintendent Haines, Whitchurch, or to Segeant Galliers, Market Dray- ton, Salop.— Bow- street, January 26. Description of a tramping labourer committed to Spilsby Gaol for 14 days, for vagrancy, at the expiration of which he will be charged with larceny : he gives the name of GEORGE JOHNSON, 29 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches higb, dark com- plexion, black hair and moustache, rather prominent grey eyes, and says he was born at Wbatton, Norfolk ; dressed in a woollen shirt and drab slop without sleeves. Information to be given to Superintendent Richdale, Spilsby, Lincoln- shire, who will forward photographs on application.— Box- street, January 2G. | Description of JOSEPH THOMAS, alias JOHN BELL, 5th Dragoon Guards, who was sentenced at Welsh- pool, on the 17th instant, for fraudulent enlistment in the- 21st Brigade, to 3 months imprisonment: he is about 28 or 29 years of age, 5 feet l'Of inches high, sallow complexion' prominent nose, grey eyes, brown hair, chest 38| to 40 ins. j he was discharged from the 23rd Foot prior to June, 1874, since which time he has enlisted and been discharged with ignominy, from 5th Dragoon Guards, and it is probable he will again offer himself for enlistment on his release from, prison. Information to be given to the Officer commanding 21st Sub- District Brigade, Shrewsbury, Salop.— Bow- street January 26. Committed to Northallerton Gaol for one month, under the Vagrant Act, on the 24th instant, at Malton : GEORGE WILLIAMS, 25 years of age, 5 feet 7J> inches high, fail- complexion, grey eyes, and brown hair; dressed in a brown cloth jacket and vest, moleskin trousers, hard felt hat, and old lace- up boots ; states that he is a native of Ditton, Kent, and has been working at Hull; a* d JOHN YOUNG, who is 20 years of age, 5 feet 3- J inches high, fair complexion, grey eyes, and brown hair ; dressed in an old blue pilot jacket, brown cloth vest, grey mixture cloth trousers, and Scotch cap with peak ; states that he is a native of Glasgow, and has been working at a nail factory at that place. Information to be given to Superintendent Metcalfe, Constabulary Office, Malton, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, January 26. Escaped from custody, at Winchester, on the 22nd inst., when apprehended on a warrant for felony: HENRY CLAYTON, alias WELDON, a tramping tailor, 23 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, very pale complexian, very light hair, whiskers, and moustache, shaved under chin ; dressed in cUrk cutaway coat, dark tweed trousers, black necktie, black felt hat, blue and white shirt; well known in Hamp- shire, and will probably apply for employment at Aldershot. — Metropolitan Police, V Division, January 26. hair, blue eyes,; moustache sallow complexion; dressed in a | ^ eym'sallow luZl^ wfi. States that he is a WILLIAM PARSONS, a native of Wincanton, Somerset, and is a native of Runcorn.
