Notice.— It is requested that all communications lor the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may hear the Slguatore of the person requiring or lending the same, amd all applications in reference to the POLICE G AZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should he appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that un Information should be made and nworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any aiticle in the COLICS GAZETTE, ttIS liCtters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and DeserierB from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. INFORMATIONS. MU& DEB A1B MALICIOUSLY WOU1DIN6 About 9.20 p. m., on the 24th instant, the Dead Body of a Female Child was found in a thoroughfare in the borough of Bolton, wrapped in two hand- towels and a piece of brown paper. The towel which was next to the body is a little marked with blood, made of ' nap' or ' Russian' towelling, very far worn, size 28 by 21 inches, has a red stripe and tape- like border at each end, and the border about three- quarters of an inch wide. The other towel is ' honey comb' or 1 hucka- back,' about half- worn, 33 in. s by 18$ ins., has four double stripes of red running through from end to end, 5 ins. apart, and a red stripe three- quarters of an inch broad at each end, with fringe border, two very small holes at one end, and is quite clean. At the Coroner's inquest a verdict of ' Wilful Murder' was returned against some person or persons unknown. Description of JOHN KING, charged on a warrant with forging and uttering the acceptance to a Bill of Exchange : he is 62 years of age, 6 feet or 6 feet 2 inches high, grey hair, broad forehead, full face, broad shoulders, and stoops ; generally wears a broad brim hat. Stolen from different persons at the Railway Stations in Bolton during the Fair, on the 1st aud 2nd instant: 1 silver lever Watch, No. 10,888, with sunk seconds aud dial. 1 ditto Watch, 11,679, maker ' Joseph Harris,' plain dial, large figures, aud sunk seconds. (£ 1 reward is offered for the recovery of this Watch and the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders.) 1 silver lever Watch, No. 556, maker ' J. Hargreaves, Wigan,' plain dial, sunk seconds, and plain case. 1 silver lever Watch. No. 73, the outside case is loose and has ' J. S. C.' engraved thereon. 1 silver lever Watch, No. 2824, maker ' Wm. Between 11 p. m. 5th and 6 a. m. on the 6th instant, tho dwelling- house of Mr. William Hankinson, Goldthorn- hill, Upper Penn, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a black Moscow beaver Chesterfield Greatcoat, velvet collar, double- breasted, plain buttons, lined with black Italian cloth, and the name ' E. J. Phillips, 3. Queen- street, Wolverhamp- ton ' on the suspender ; a bo)'' s ditto, similar description and make ; two pairs of green Gloves, one pair lined with blue ; a pair of boy's green calfskin Gloves ; a pair of brown cloth Gloves, lined with wash leather; and a small Box, con- taining Half a Crown and a Shilling, dated 1875. Information to be given to Inspector Tomlinson, Sedgley, or to Police Constable Wright, Upper Penn, Staffordshire. — Bow- street, January 10. Between 6 and 8 p. m., on the evening of the 27th ultimo, the dwelling- house of Mr. Charles Edward Hansell, grocer, of St. Albans, was broken and entered, and a mahogany Desk, containing [ from £ 15 to £ 20 in Gold, £ 17 iu Silver, £ 4 in Coppers, 2s. in Farthings, and one £ 5 Bank of England Note stolen therein. Also 2 lbs. of Returns, 1 lb. of Shag Tobacco ; about 4 lbs. of Tea ; a double- case silver hunting- Watch, engine- turned, but worn nearly smooth, maker T. or J. Parker. A tall man with a long coat and felt hat was seen near the back of the premises, on the evening of the offence, and an old black handled table knife, has since been found left on the premises. Description of one of the men suspected: 25 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, very fair and fresh complexion, light hair, short whiskers and moustache, full face, stout figure, peculiar cast in one eye, large rough hands, and thick fingers; dressed in rough blue pilot overcoat, and light pepper- and- salt- coloured cloth trousers. A common brace and an auger bit, with the name of ' Harris,' were left on the premises. £ 40 reward will be paid for the appre- hension and conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the property, or a proportionate reward for any portion thereof. Stolen on the 1st instant, from Grosvenor- place, Pimlico: a dark bay cob Horse, clipped ; and a Cart, painted a dark colour, containing about 80 lbs. of Meat, ' E Knapman & Co.' painted on the sides and back of cart.— Metropolitan Police, B Division, January 5. Absconded from Dunchurch Hall, near Rugby, on the 31st ultimo: HENRY BENNETT, a groom, late in the employ of Captain Pritchard R- iyner, of Dunchurch Hall, stealing: one stable Jacket and Vest ( brown and tweed) ; one pair of Trousers and Vest ( found pledged in Rugby) ; two plain calico Shirts ( blue and white striped) ; one German silver Watch,' IT. Jury'scratched inside case ; one common scarf Pin, the pattern of a 5- bavred gate. Bennett is about 21 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, fresh complexion, blue eyes, black hair, no whiskers, scar on right jaw from wound, and both hands drawn with the rheumatics. Stolen from a bed- room at the Dudley Arms Hotel, Dudley, between 3 and 7 a. m. on the 8th instant : a gold lever Watch, open- face, long hand bent, a gold Guard attached, with long links, dropper with a blood stone on one side, and pink stone on the other side; a silver Geneva Watch, old romau figures on face, small ' « and broken, ' Stuart' scratched ou rim on inside case, had attached an aluminum albert Guard, snake pattern ; a gold signet Ring, oval shape, set with a blood stone; a small pocket Knife, engraved on handle ' W. Stuart'; and a quantity of gentleman's wearing Apparel, since recovered. By a man, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, slight make, dark hair, cut short, slight dark moustache and whiskers, sallow complexion, small sharp features, has lost his two eye- teeth, has two scars on forehead, speaks thickly, and is of good address; dressed in a dark grey waterproof overcoat, dark cloth trousers, white muffler, and black deerstalker hat: he represents himself to be a commercial traveller. £ 5 reward will be paid to any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of tbe offender or offenders, and recovery of the property. Stolen from a common lodging- house at Market Har- borough, on the 6th instant: a pair of men's Trousers, brown with white stiipes across about $- inch apart; two white calico Shirts, one clean, the other dirty, both marked in corner with red cotton ' John Wm. Rands ;' a check cotton Scarf ; two calico Sheets, not much worn ; 4 yards of new Calico, and one leg of a pair of women's drawers as a pattern; six dozen of small black glass Buttons; 3 yards of new Ribbon, black and green ; 3 yards of ditto, viclet and black ; three white Falls, with black spots ; a blue Fall; and several bits of narrow silk Velvet, of different colours. By a woman who had been stopping there since the 22nd November last : about 50 years of age, medium height, thin make, very sallow complexion, very thin face, dark hair, speaks fluently and well, has a very plausible manner, is very quick and active in her movements, aud is fond of talking of having seen better days ; she carries with her a small pasteboard box ; dressed in black shawl, old brown gown, and dark bonnet. Absconded on the 3rd instant, from Queen's Gardens, Bayswater, stealing £ 80 : a man, 56 years of age, 6 ft. 1 inch high, fair complexion, grey hair, whiskers and moustache; dressed in black frock coat, grey mixture trousers, and high black hat; of military appearance.— Metropolitan Police, X Division, January 7. Absconded from Long Sutton on the 29th ultimo : THOMAS SMITH, alias WILLIAM FLETCHER, car- penter, supposed a native of Standground, near Peterboro', charged with stealing Carpenters' Tools ( recovered); about 35 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, of sickly appear- ance, tattooed on both arms, light brown hair, and sandy isker3; dressed in old light jacket, old light- coloured users with stripes down the sides, soft black billycock bat, , rs an old pair of Wellington boot tops under his trousers eggings. He is accompanred by a woman much older than . self, her hair quite grey, slightly pockmarked, tall and ^ : wears a brown dress, velvet jacket, and black straw They are both addicted to drink, and likely to be found ' ow beer- houses. FRANCIS WILMOT, advertised in the Police Gazette the 8th ultimo, charged with stealing 40 elm Boards, was . bail till the Quarter Sessions, held at Devizes, on the ti instant, but failed to appear. A bench warrant is issued > r his apprehension. Information to be given to Deputy Jhief Constable Stretten, Wilts Constabulary, Marlboroagh. ~ Bow- street, January 7. Stolen on the 1st instant, from the Shrewsbury Arms information aa will lead to his- apprehension and conviction. Hotel, Stafford : a light- brown Overcoat, with brown bone buttons, ticket pocket on right side, large pockets on hips and brown lining, which has been repaired ; and a pair of black cloth Trousers, nearly new. By a tramping stableman, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, round features, light hair, whiskers and moustache; supposed dressed in grey mixture stable jacket and vest, black cloth trousers, black and white check shirt, white muffler with black spots, and strong lace- up boots. Remanded at Bromsgrove till the 14th instant, charged with larceny : HUGH JOHN THOMAS EVANS JACKSON, 37 years of age, 5 feet 5^ inches high, fresh complexion, He says be was formerly employed as j brown hair, moustache, and whiskers, clean chin, bald on a stableman at the Training Stables, Middlebam, and he will probably seek employment at Livery Stables. Absconded from Chilton, in the parish of Atcham, Salop, on the 22nd ultimo, charged on a warrant with embezzle- ment : JAMES KITE, late a farm labourer in the employ- ment of Mr. Jeffery Poole, of Chilton, about 25 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, no whiskers, has lost the right eye, and wears a shade ; dressed in dark jacket and vest, clean cotton cord trousers, strong lace- up boots,- and low black hat. Information to be given to Super- intendent Howells, County Constabulary, Shrewsbury, Salop.— Bow- street, January 5. Description of JOSEPH RICHARD WILLS, charged with stealing— a gold lever Watch, with inscription in French inside ; a gold Chain ; three gold Rings ; a Mourning Brooch, engraved on the back ' Peter Footeand a sum of Money 18 years Of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches higb, pale complexion, and light brown hair ; he is a seaman, belonging to H. M. ship ' Duncan,' at Sheemess. Information to be given to Superintendent Wilshire, Folkestone, Kent, who holds a war- rant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, January 5. Stolen on the 24tli ultimo, from the Barrel Inn, Boss : a pair of dark mixture cloth Trousers, with fly fronts and buckle at waistband, and have been darned in the seat ; a black high crowned hard felt Hat, with blue lining, size 6f, with white stain marks outside the crown ; a Militia Shirt, linen front; and a pair of new blue cotton Stockings ; the property of Thomas Sheppard. By JOHN NICHOLLS, a tramping fitter, 23 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, slight make, light hair, and no whiskers ; dressed in black clotli jacket, dark plaid trousers, old spring side boo+ s, and ihe stolen hat. He is a native of Smethwick, near Birmingham, and is likely to be found working at a foundry or fitting shop. Information to be given to Superintendent Smith, Ross, Herefordshiae, who holds a warrant for his apprehen- sion.— Bow- street, Janua/ ry 5. Description of WILLIAM BANKS, late of Market Drayton, labourer, charged with stealing, on the 9th ultimo, four Fowls ( recovered), the property of John Dain : 27_ years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair and eyes, scar on right ear, aud stoops ; dressed in pilot jacket, moleskin vest, cotton cord trousers, rough cloth cap, strong lace- up boots, and may bo wearing a blue witney overcoat. He was convicted of larceny from the person in 1872, also of larceny in 1874 ; it is supposed that he will enlist at Canter- bury or Aldershot. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Haines, Whitchurch, or to Sergeant Galliers, Market Drayton, Salop, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. Bow- street, January 3. Charged ( on a sheriff's warrant) with embezzling .£ 280 belonging to a firm of ironmasters iu Glasgow: WILLIAM SUTHERLAND BROWN, a traveller, about 26 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, fair hair parted in the centre, and short, slight, fair whiskers, dressed in brown tweed suit and brown felt hat, and frequently wears light brown gaiters ; is of dissipated habits, but has a smart and respectable appear- ance. Information to be given to Chief Constable McCall, Glasgow.— Bcn:> street, January 3. Absconded on the 28th ultimo, from 54, Charles- street, City- road, embezzling £ 20 : a man, 24 years of age, 5 ft. 6 ins. high, sallow complexion, dark hair and eyes, Roman nose, and slight moustache; dark dress, long dark overcoat and trousers, and black billycock hat. He is a collector.— Metro- politan Police, G Division, January 3. Description of RICHARD SMITH, alias ' DECK O,' a minder in a cotton mill, a native of Hyde or Dukinfield, Cheshire, charged with stealing on the 22nd ultimo, a pair of watertight Boots, recovered : he is about 42 yeais of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, brown hair, cut short behind, sallow complexion, no teeth in front, moustache, no whiskers, and slender build ; dressed iu pilot monkey jacket, black vest, greasy trousers, black and white woollen scarf, soft billycock hat, with broad brim, and blucher boots. Information to be given to Inspector Whincnp, West Riding Constabulary Office, Woobroad, Saddleworth, who holds a wairant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, January 3. Further information respecting BENJAMIN MADDER, tailor, of Bungay, charged with embezzlement, and advertised iu the Police Gazette of the 25th October last. He was traced to Chelmsford with his wife and children, stayed there one night, and went in the direction of London, and is now supposed to be working at his trade in the neigh- bourhood of Pimlico. Description of two lads charged on a warrant with obtaining ill by false pretences, from Robert Browning, inn- keeper, of Cockfield, on the 25th ultimo : WALTER CHOAT, a drover, about 15 years of age, 5 feet high, stout build, fresh complexion, with sores on one side of face ; dressed in light coat and trousers, dark vest, black billycock hat, black leather leggings, with buttons, black mackintosh, nearly new. H « is a native of Ring! Needham Market, Suffolk. EDWARD FARTHING, 14 years of age, 5 feet 2 i: high, and dark complexion; dressed in dark clothes,! black billycock hat. A native of Needham Market. Information to be given to Sergeant Marsh, Lavenham, Police Constable BaJdry, Cockfield, Suffolk.— Bow- d January 7. fore part of head, and blue cut mark on forehead over right eye ; dressed in an old black ulster coat, black cloth jacket and trousers, imitation sealskin vest blacK bowler hat, and lace- up boots : aud THOMAS WATTS, 18 years of age, 5 feet 4 irches high, ruddy complexion, and light sandy hair ; dressed in a blue pilot monkey jacket, fustian trousers nnd vest, watertight^ boots, and hard billyeeck hat. They travel together with a pony and cart, calling at farmhouses buying fruit, vegetables, old iron, & c., and state that they have travelled in Wales, Leicestershire, and Warwickshire. Description of WILLIAM MILLENS, alias WAIN- FLEET BILL, remanded until the ISth instant On a " charge of- felony : - 37 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fresh com plexion, brown hair, bald on top of head, sandy whiskers, and scar on top of nose; dressed in an old shabby cloth jacket, white slop underneath, old drabbet trousers, and blucher boots; he says he is a navvy, and a native Wain- fleet, Lincolnshire. Infoimation to be given to Superinten- dent Gregg, Great Grimsby, Lincolnshire. — koW- street, January 10. Description of three men remanded till the 12tli instant, charged with burglary at Hailsham, Sussex, and in whose possession were found numerous house- breaking implements : EDWARD HOLMES, 39 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, stout figure, dark complexion, black hair, whiskers, and moustache, shaved under the chin, light hazel eyes, high cheek bones, face much marked with the small pox, bunion on left big toe, ' E. Holmes,' on right arm, just above wrist, and full deep voice ; dressed in striped cotton shirt, flannel under shirt, blue and black plaid cloth trousers, black ribbed cloth coat and vest, brown overcoat, bound with braid aid velvet collar, silk hat, and elastic- side boots. SAMUEL ALSOPP, 24 years of age ( looks older), 5 feet 5 inches high, slight figure, brown hair, dark sandy beard and moustache, cheeks shaved, hazel eyes, Roman nose, aud scar right Bide of neck from a carbuncle ; dressed in coloured shirt, with dark under shirt, black cloth trousers, with fine white stripes, black cloth coat and vest, black scarf, Mack cloth overcoat, with velvet collar, black hard round felt hat, with mourning cloth band, and elastic- side boots. THOMAS THURSTON, 32 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches higb, proportionate figure, thin light brown hair, face shaved, except sandy moustache, blue eyes, rather sallow complexion, and has lost an upper front tooth; dressed in coloured cotton shirt, with chocolate guernsey underneath, dark speckled clotli trousers and vest, black cloth coat, dark grey overcoat, with velvet collar, silk hat, and elastic- side boots. The last two men have the appearance of circus or show followers. Tney all state that they came from Manchester, they ad several free passes for the South London Music Hall in their possession, also two gold Scarf Pins, a gold Ring, an old silver Coin, of the reign of Edward VI, an old silver open- face verge Watch, No. 4823, linker John Bar- ham, Toiquay, leather and steel Chain attached, with a gold Kreutzer, date 1849. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Waghorn, Hailsham, or at the Chief Con- stable's Office, Lewes, Sussex.— Bow- street, January 10. Description of MICHAEL RILEY, committed for trlai from the Sunderland Police Court on the 3rd instant, cn a charge of stealing £ 2 6s. from a fellow- lodger : he is about 27 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, grey eyes, brown hair, aud fresh complexion; is a seaman, and states that be has just left a ship at Hull, aud that he is a native of Harwich, information to be given to Chief Constable Stainsby, Sun- derland, Durham.— Bow- street, January 10. Remanded at Boynmawr, until the 10th instant : WM. HARRIS, charged with burglary at Brynmawr : about 34 years of age, 5 feet 5J inches high, sallow complexion, black hair and eyes, face and aims thickly pockmarked, burn maiks on back of light leg aud on left hip ; states that he has resided at Aberdaie aud Hirwain. Information to be given to Sergeant ( No. 18) Joseph, Brynmawr, Breconshire.— Bow- street, January 7. Description of licence - holder No. 2805, ROBERT SPINKS, who was convicted of horse stealing at Chelmsford, on the 21st October. 1869, and sentenced to 7 years penal servitude, and who left Aldershot in November last, without reporting his intention of doing so : he is 36 years of age, ; 5 feet inches high, brown hair, hazel eyes, dark com- ; p'exion, sharp nose, two scars on forehead, three crosses and anchor inside left arm, anchor back of left hand, ' P.' on first finger, and ' T' on second finger left hand, scar left side of back ; he was liberated from Portsmouth Convict Prison, on the 13th November last; he is a cordwainer, and has probably gone to some military station to seek employment.
