Absconded on the 31st ultimo, charged with forgery ami stealing a large sum of Money, the property of his employers : WILLIAM WIDDOWSON, late manager of a branch bank in Sheffield, about 24 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, sallow complexion, grey eyes, brown hair, small whiskers, is slightly built, and appeared to be suffering from nervous debility; he is a native of Barlbrough, but has resided for some vears in Sheffield ; generally wears a short coat, light trousers, and felt hat, and had in his possession, when he absconded, a black leather travelling bag and a portmanteau ; It is supposed that he will endeavour to leave the countiy. Stolen from the person while on the Shifnal Agricultural Show- ground, on the 7th instant : a light brown leather Purse with steel clasp, containing a small Key, three First- class Railway Tickets from Wellington to Shifnal, and about 10s. in Money. Also a dark- coloured leather Purse, with brass rim and and clasps, containing a Half- sovereign, about 5d. in Coppers, and a " small Key. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Richardson, Wellington, or to Sergeant Meredith, Shifnal, Salop.— Bow- street, September 10. "*—* Stolen from the person of a gentleman, at the Shifnal Railway Station, whilst leaving ' by the 8 50 p. m. train, for Wolverhampton : a good plain gold Watch, white face, roman figures, and blue steel hands-, No. 7122, maker C. Thiasher, 488, Coventry- road, Birmingham. £ 5 reward will be paid for the apprehension of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the watch. Stolen about 12 30 a. m. on the 5th instant, from the person of James Beckett, at Elton, near Sandbach : a silver lever Watch, silver dial, gold figures, seconds hand, steel hands, No. 7490. By a man about 32 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, crippled in his right arm, and is a pensioner. Stolen from the person at Chester Road Railway StatioD, near Sutton Coldfield, on the 31st ultimo : an English lever Watch, moderate size, engine- turned, worn smooth at back of outside case, capped and jewelled, gold hands, No. 9383, maker's name ' Johnson, Darlington,' on plate. Stolen from the person, in York, during the 24th, 25th, and 26th instant : A gold lever Watcb, gold dial, ' steel hands, chased back, rose and spade engraved thereon, the rose embossed at the edges, outer case 18 carat gold, brass dome, No. 96716. A gold Lever, plain cases, white dial, gold hands, centre seconds, maker's name ' W. H. Whalley, Blackburn,' No. 966, ' John Thompson,' engraved on inside of outer case, and ' J. Between 9 a. m. and 12.15 p. m. on the 28th ultimo, the dwelling- house of William Perry, labourer, of Badenhall, in the parish of Eccleshall, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a pair of lace- up Boots, recently soled ; two cotton Shirts, one nearly new ; a pair of black cloth Trousers, nearly new; a pair of dark grey Trousers ; a pair of light cord Trousers; a woollen plaid Shawl, small size, black, red, and white ; three silk Handkerchiefs, a fox's head in centre of one, with green and red plaid, one with yellow and green ; and 19s. in Silver. Supposed by a man, about 22 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high ; dressed in a black sammy liat, dark jacket, light cord trousers, and heavy lace- r. p boots. The dwelling- house of Mr. Solomon Fellows, of Ettingsball, near Bilston, was broken and entered between 11 p. m. on the 29th and 6 am. on the 30th ultimo, and stolen therein: two black cloLh Jackets, ' Phillips, Queen- street, Wolverhampton,' stamped on collar strap ; a black and white tweed Jacket; a lady's grey waterproof Cloak ; a dark grey waterproof Overcoat ; a white silk Pocket- hand- kerchief, with blue border ; a light- coloured ditto, with flowered border ; a pair of lady's elastic- side kid Boots, with caps on toes ; two pairs of men's elastic- side Boots, recently tapped ; a dark woollen Shaw], with puce border, some of the friDge off ; an eight- day Timepiece, gilt ; and a ' Little Belle' Sewing Machine. Description of HENRY MAYO, a return convict, who absconded from Lecblade, Gloucestershire, on the 17th ult., charged with stealing an Ass, the property of Charles Winfield : he is 22 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, scar ou head, forehead, and chest, scar and tattoo marks on left thigh, left arm, and hand, ' H.' on left middle finger, unicorn, mole, and scar on right arm, small light whiskers and moustache, short neck, and carries his head forward ; dressed ill grey or dark cloth monkey jacket and trousers, with patch on each kuee. Found ( supposed stolen) at Blymhill, near Shifnal, Salop, on the 8th instant: an aged dark brown hackney Mare, about 15 hands high, in good condition, black legs, long tail, white hair on both sides of back, and scar on off knee. Stolen since the 22nd July, the property of Mr. Charles Lloyd, Tyddyn, farmer, in the parish of Llanfawr, Montgo- meryshire : a light brown entire Ass, 14 years old, Lad a small patch of hair rubbed off about 3 or 4 iuches from the tail. Information to be given to Police Constable Breeze, Llanfawr, or to Superintendent Ellis, Welshpool, Montgo- meryshire.— Bow street, September 8. Stolen from a shed, at Park End, near Middlesbrough, during the night of the 6th instant: a dark bay Mare, 5 yrs. old, 15 bands 1 inch high, star on forehead, off hind hoof tipped with white, nearly thorough- bred, in good condition, and newly shod, the property of John Stevenson, Esq. Stolen from a field at Horningsham, Wilts, on the 2nd instant, the property of Edward Wilkins: a dark browa Pony,". 14 hands high, aged, small lump on the off foreleg, prominent forehead, with white star, stiff in the hind quarters, bang tail, cut square. Stolen from Hednesford, on the 23rd ultimo : a dark brown horse Pony, aged, 13 hands high, short tail, saddle mark on back, cut on fore feet, the property of Joseph King, Lawley- street, Dudley. Stolen on tbe 28th ult. from a field at Hayes : a bright bay cait Mare, black points, age 3^ years, 16 hands high, small warts on belly, and one over left eye, iu foal, and iu good condition.— Metropolitan Police, P Division, September 3. Stolen from a field at Pentreclwyd, Glyn Neath, during the night of the 31st ultimo : a light bay Mare, C years old, about 15 hands high, white face, hind feet white, and a lump on ( vne hind leg near the hock, the property of Thos. Morgan, of Rhygos Farm. Information to be given to Superintendent Thomas, Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorganshire.— Baw- itrect, Sep- tember 3. Stolen on the night of the 28th ultimo, from Leig'ntor?, near Welshpool: a grey mare Pony, 10 years old, about 14 hands high, large mane, rather large head, small black matk under the paddle, and in very good condition, the propei ty of J. Naylor, Esq. Information to be given to Police Constable Thomas, Butlington, or to Superintendent Ellis, Monrouthabiro Constabulary, Welshpool.— Bow- street, September 3. Stolen from St. Mary Hill Fair, Glamorganshire, on the 26th ultimo, ' a mare Pony and Colt: the Mare is' about 4 years old, chestnut colour, white streak down the forehead mane a little lighter than the body, the part near the ears is shorter than the back part, the tail is cut square and long, short legs, stout build, faH in centre of back, saddle mark on shoulder, and very quiet; the Co t is about 15 weeks old, dark brown colour, with small head, dark brown maae and tail with a few grey hairs, and one hind leg is supposed to have a white fetlock. Description of JOHN HAVENHAND, alias CHAT- WYNE, a clerk, charged ( on a warrant) with stealino- £ 48 10s. lOd. from his employers at Sheffield: 93 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, fresh complexion, blue eves, sandy hair and moustache, chin shaved, medium build^ military appearance, and a native of Mosbro', Derbyshire ;, dressed in dirk grey cloth suit, light stripe down trousers, black soft billycock hat, and reversible makintosli ; he was discharged from the 5th Dragoon Guards on the 6th April last. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Kershaw, Sheffield Yorkshire.— Bow- street, September 10. Absconded on the 6th ins., from Little Wild- street, steal- iog £ 6 14s., the monies of his emj lojer : a Ej& a, 20 years of age, 5 feet 4 iuches high, dark complexion, bair, aud whiskers; dressed in brown cloth vest with sleeves, da? k cjoth trousers, and billycock hat; he is a cowman, and slated that he came from cambridgeshire.— Metropolitan Police, E Division, September 10. Absconded from the borough of Shrewsbury, on the 29th ultimo, charged ou a warrant with stealing a quantity of Wearing Apparel and Bed Liuen : ANN MORRIS, 45 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, dark hair, light complexion, scar from cancer on left side of face, and lame in the right leg ; dressed when last seen in a slate- coloured winsey dress, faded, aud small cotton bonnet. Information to be given to Head Constable Davies, Shrewsbury, Salop, who holds a warraat for her apprehension.— Bow- street, Sep!. 10. Absconded from Droitwich in July list, charged with converting to his own use several silver Watches : JOHN LUCK, alias EDWARD NICHOLLS, alias EDWARD HARRIS, a native of Br& anston, about 34 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, sallow complexion, dark eyes, png nose, long black curly liair, dark whiskers and moustache, supposed to be dyed ; dressed in a dark suit and white billycock hat; he is a shoemaker, and has carried on the business of a repairer of watches, many of which he is found to have pledged. Description of JAMES ARGYLE, who ab3oonded from Middlesborough, on the 7th instant, charged with larceny: he is a native of Birmingham, 25 years of ago, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, dark hair, hazel eyes, slight black moustache; diessed iu a short dark coat, with velvet collar, four pockets outside, with flaps, and one inside left breast, dirty old light plaid double- breasted vest, old dark cap, turned up at the sides, and tied at the top, and plaid neck scarf ; he has been in the 43rd Regiment of Foot, he generally works at feeding a nail cutting machine ; bsfore he came to Middles- borough ho worked at some nail works, in Bridgewater- street, Salford. Information to be given to Chief Constable Saggerson, Borough Police Ste. twn, Middlesborough.—. Bow- s', reet, September 10. Description of a man charged with stealiug a Timepiece from the ' Lamb and Flag' inn, at Whaplade, on the 4th inst.: about 40 years of age, 5 ftiet 7 inches high, dark complexion, aud dark hair and whiskers ( worn round under the chin); dressed in a short white slop, supposed to have a black vest underneath, cord trousers ( recently washed), and black chummy hat. Ha was inquiring his way to Boston. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Leaper, County Police Station, Spalding, Lincolnshire.— Bovi- slreet, September 8. Absconded on the 30th ultimo, from Leeming, in the North Riding of Yorkshire, charged with stealing £ 3 4s. 6d. from a dwelling- house where he had been lodging for a fortnight: a man about 30 years of age, 5 feet 4 iuches high, dark complexion, dark brown hair, moustache, aud imperial, very slender figure, a native of London, and a fitter ; dressed iu a pepper- and- salt- coloured coat aud trousers, blue vest, black stiff billycock hat, and light shoes. Information to be given to Superintendent Alderson, Leyburn, or to Inspector Spence, North Riding Constabulary, Bedale— Bow- street, September 3. Charged with stealing a silver Watcli and Appendages ( recovered), a new calico Shirt with linen front, and a pair of wellingtou Boots, recently soled, and which he is supposed to be wearing, the property of William Parfitt, of Clutton : JAMES PEARSON, about 20 years, of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches higb, light connexion, light brown Lair, no whiskers; 8 P O L I O E^ G A Z E T T E . September 3 dressed sometimes in Scotch cap, at others in a round imita- tion sealskin cap with ear- flaps tied over crown, pepper- and- salt- coloured coat with hip pockets, brown cloth vest with pale pink spots, and light grey trousers, all much worn. He stated that he was a painter, but has been working as a farm labourer; his correct name is supposed to be JOSEPH HARRISON, of Rookery road, Handswortb, Birmingham, and he is suspected of beiDg a deserter from the 37th Brigade, Bristol Depot. Information to be given to Supeiintendent Einson, Somerset Constabulary, Temple Cloud, near Bristol, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, September 3. Absconded from Brown- street, Salisbury, on the Istinst., charged on a warrant with stealing £ 7 in Gold : a blue cloth monkey Jacket, trimmed with black braid, pockets on Hps, one inside breast pocket, velvet collar ; a black cloth cutaway Coat, pockets on hips, one inside breast pocket ; a double- breasted dark mixture cloth Vest; and a pair of dark mixture cloth Trousers : EARNEST THOMPSON, a painter, about 2S years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark hair, small whiskers ; dressed in daiK clothes, black felt hat, or in the stolen clothes. Information to be given to Head Constable Mathews, City Police Office, Salisbury, Wilts, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bcno- street, September 3. Stolen on the 26th April last, from Orlando- street, Walsall, the sum of £ 33 0s. By a man, 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 inchis high, fair complexion, sandy whiskers, light hair, slightly bald, and scar on top of head ; respectable dress and ' appearance.— Metropolitan Police, E Division, September 1. Absconded on the 13th ultimo, from 452, Oxford- street, stealing a Cheque for £ 15 10, the monies of his employer : a man, 22 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, fair complexion, brown hair ; dressed in dark pilot jacket, dark mixture vest and trousers, and high hat, and is of respectable appearance. Metropolitan Police, E Division, September 1. not since been heard of: SAMUEL THORP, 10 years of of age medium height, and has on two wedding rings and a age, short and stout, fresh complexion, and light brown hair; ring with places for five small stones, which are deficient; dressed in a white slop, fustian trousers and vest, brown cloth ; dressed in half mourning print or black stuff gown, and black cap, and clogs with brass clasps. It is feared that some ill j jacket or shawl; had " 1— J1 1 '" ' has befallen him. Information to be given to Superintendent Ball, West Riding Constabulary, Bradford, Yorkshire.- Bow- street, September 10. * a bundle and box with her, also a savings bank book on a bank in Farnham, Surrey, and a deposit note on the London and County Bank, Dover, for £ 35. She left Bekesbourne Station, London, Chatham, and Dover Railway, for Dover, by the 8' 45 train a. m on 28th ult,, larceny : 19 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark brown hair, brown eyes, sallow complexion, long nose, broad nostrils, scar on both sides of forehead, a mole on left side of chin and left forearm ; he is a bookbinder. £ 10 reward will be paid to any one giving such information as shall lead to his appre- hension, ou application to Mr. E. Marshall, Governor of the Gaol, or to Chief Constabie Farndale, Police Office, Leicester, from both of whom portraits may be had.— Bow- tt., Sept. 10. Description of WALTER CHAPMAN, committed for 2 months hard labour to Maidstone Gaol, on the 2nd instant, for larceny, at Hor.- monden : 21 years of age, 5 feet S inches high, grey eyes, full face, light brown hair, which stands up all over the head, and light brown whiskers ; dressed in a Sussex frock, brown cord trousers with black marks across, Information to be given to Superintendent Sanders, Police Station, Dover, Kent.— Bow- street, September 6. Remanded until the 13th instant, at Luton, charged with begging, & c.: JOHN FITSUMMONS ( name supposed to be fictitious), 22 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark complexion, hazel eyes, dark hair, no whiskers, scar on belly and right foot; dressed in an old black cloth coat, no waistcoat, brown trousers with stripes, black deerstalker hat, very much worn, t and old lace- up boots. And JAMES SMITH, 33 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, dark brown hair, blue eyes, whiskers and moustache shaved off; diessed in an old white jacket, two waistcoats, one brown, the other black, blue trousers, FKLOEIES. ( Not otherwise described). Absconded on the 29th ultimo, frtrn Amersham, charged with committing an indecent assault upon a child 5 years old: SAMUEL LEE, a bricklayer, 75 years of age, about 5 feet billycock hat, and lace- up boots. He is a native of Ide Hill, near Sevenoaks, and was engaged in hop- picking. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Morgan, Kent Consta- bulary, Cranbrook.— Bow- street, Seytember 8. Description of MARY ANN SPURGEON, alias AMELIA SMITH, remanded at Gravesend for a week, charged with obtaining Goods and Money from several tradesmen by false pretences : 19 years of age, 4 feet 4 inches high, hazel eye;-, brown hair, scar on side of left eye, and also on thumb; dressed in light stuff dress, black bodice, black straw hat trimmed with grey ribbon, and blue ribbon round the neck. Her friends reside in the locality of Baroness- road, Hackney, Loudon. Remanded at Nottingham till the 9th instant, charged with forging orders for books: JACOB ALLEN alias ALEXANDER NISBETT, alias HORACE GORDON, a book canvasser ; 33 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, blue eyes, long face, and a scar on right arm from a burn. Description of JOHN BRADLEY, alias JOHN HARRISON, who has failed to report himself as required by the Prevention of Climes Act, 1871: 54 years of age, 5 feet 1$ inch high, sandy hair turning grey, blue eyes, fresh complexion, a little lame of left leg, blue scars on nose, eye- brows, and forehead ; usually dressed in blue pilot jacket, cord trousers, and cap with straight peak. He is a colliery engineer, and has been four times convicted of felony; he was liberated from Stafford Gaol on the 30th June, 1873, after 12 months imprisonment, aud is under police supervision for 7 yeais; he has since been sentenced to 6 months imprisonment for fraud. No. 90, No. on licence 44958 | 29111, convicted at Clerkeuwell, 1871, for horse stealing, crime on licence is copied as housebreaking, and sentenced to 5 years penal servitude : he is 34 years of age, 5 feet 7| inches high, brown hair, clean shaved face, brown eyes, has a cast in one eye, honey nose, slightly on one side, and a sear ou the bridge ; he is a native of Leicestershire, talkative, and boasts of being a clever farrier ; he is likely to impose on farmers by selling cattle medicine.
