INF ORMATIO NS. MtfEDE^ AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. About 7 p. m. on tbe 17th instant, the dead Body of a newly- born female Child was found in the Trent and Mersey Canal at Sbobnall, near Burton- on- Trent: the body was wrapped in black stuff and calico tightly bound, it was much swollen and had a brick tied to it, and appeared to have been in the water ten or twelve days. At the coroner's inquest a verdict of ' Wilful murder' was returned against some person or persons unknown. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Bowen, Burton- on- Trent, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, Auqust 25. Description of HENRY POWELL, alias JEFFRY, charged ( on a warrant) with wounding : 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fresh complexion, slight sandy whiskers, long features, and large nose ; dressed in old sruff- coloured jacket, dark cloth vest, corduroy trousers, and ssft billycock hat; he is a chain maker, aud a native of Brownhills ; has worked in North Staffordshire, and is now supposed to be near Wolverhampton. Information to be giveu to Superin- tendent Hill, Brownhills, near Walsall, Staffordshire.-— Bow- street, August 23. nearly new; a leather Purse with clasp ; a pruning and budding Knife ; a pair of worked woollen Slippers, men's size ; a Bowl of a silver Spoon, with three small hah hooks at the top ; also a Cheque Book of the West of England Bank, Weston- super- Mare Branch. Supposed by a man about 25 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, full face, and of dirty appearance ; dressed in a slop with jacket underneath, and dirty fustian trousers, or may be wearing the stolen clothes. Information to be given to Superintendent Gill- banks, Somerset Constabulary, Axbridge, or to Sergeant Hardwick, Weston- super- Mare, Somersetshire.— Bow- street, August 25. Between 10' 30 p. m. on the 18th and 1T5 a. m. on the 19th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. Thomas Henry Heath, coal merchant, of Samuel- street, Crewe, was broken and entered and stolen therein : two silver Tea Spoons, marked ' A. I. Mappin and Webb, S. L.' The washhouse adjoining was also broken and entered and stolen therein : one white calico Shirt, linen front, pearl buttons, and small wristbands; one common linen Towel; one pair of elastic- Bido Boots, toe- capped ; one pair of lace- up Boots with large nails in tbe soles ; one pair of lace- up Boots, much worn ; two coloured silk Handkerchiefs, and five lady's linen Collars ; Two pairs of old elastic- side boots were left behind. A reward of two guineas will be paid to any person who will give such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the property. On the 12th instant, a dwelliDg- house in Bedford*, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a dessert Spoon, twelve tea Spoons, and a pair of sugar Tongs, all 01( 4 English pattern ; two table Spoons, marked ' J. P.'; two salt Spoons, marked ' S. M. H.' ; a butter Knife, ivory haudle ; a ditto, pearl handle; a fish Knife ; and a pickle Fork, all silver. Information to be given to Chief Constable Verey, Borough Police Office, Bedford.— Bow- street, Auqust 20. HORSE AMD CAOTLE STEALING. Found in the possession of a returned convict, on the 22nd instant, and supposed to have been stolen : a dark brown half- bred Mare, about 16 hands high, aged, and in good condition. Information to be given to Head Con- stable Liddell, Newark- on- Trent, Notts.— Bow- street, Aug. 25. Stolen from a paddock at Acock's- green, near Birming- ham, duiing the night of the 16th instant : a dark brown nag Mare, about 14 hands 3 inches high, aged, black clear legs, white star on forehead, slightly duck- rumped, small collar sore on near shoulder, and heel scars inside hind legs. .£ 10 reward will be paid to any person giving such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of offender or offenders and recovery of tho mare. RICHARD BYRNE, a shipowner, late of 137, Fenchurch- street, 47, Beaufort- gardens, Brompton- road, and Cardiff: 28 years of ago, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, dark brown hair, light brown whiskers, shaved under chin, and light moustache. Information to be given to Inspector JSailey, City of London Police, Detective Department, 26, Old Jewry, E. C.— Bow- street, August 25. Wanted, charged on a warrant with forgery and embez- zlement: H. S. LEOPOLD, late of No. 17, Hartley- street, Bonners- lane, Old Ford, commercial traveller, 45 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, dark complexion, black hair, whiskers, and moustache, turning grey, shaves under chin, and has a Jewish appearance ; generally wears dark chothes. Information to be given to Inspector Bailey, City of London Police, Detective Department, 26, Old Jewry, E. C.— Bow- st., August 23. A man of gentlemanly appearance, dressed as a clergy- man, called upon Mr. Preston, coacbbuilder of Bedford. He ordered a carriage, presenting a forged cheque for £ 50 on Messrs. Gurney & Co, Bankers, Halesworth, and received a cheque from Mr. PreBton for the balance £ 24 which he after- wards cashed in the town. He is about 40 years of age, 5 ft. 8 or 9 in. high, fresh complexion, dark hair, eyes, and whiskers, and wears spectacles. Information to be given to Chief Constable Verey, Borough Police Office, Bedford.— Bow- street, Auqust 23. ROBBERY HID LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person on the llth instant: a gold oval- shaped Locket, has a twisted riDg round the outer edges, chased, and opens into two compartments. Information to be given to Head Constable Oglethorpe, Police Station, Preston, Lancashire.— Bow- street, August 16. Between 5 and 6 p. m. on the 18th instant, the dwelling- house of Emma Whittington, of Coven, in the parish of Brewood, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a pair of man's Boots, elastic- sides, with toe caps, partly worn ; a pair of lace- up Boots, recently mended under each toe ; a pair of light grey Trousers, with stripe down side; a pair of man's dark grey woollen Stockings ; three white calico Shirts, with linen fronts ; two white linen Shirts, fronts; two Books, 1 The Life of Livingstone,' by Stanley, and several other Books; an Album, with several Photographs; a white woollen Scarf ; two women's white woollen Handkerchiefs a plaid woollen Shirt ; four diaper chamber Towels, marked ' W. W. J.'; a Brooch, set with light stone ; a Brooch, with- out a pin ; and siz Collars. Supposed by a man, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, slender make, light hair, and sandy whiskers ; dressed ii dark clothes, and black billycock hat ; he is likely to be wearing a pair of the stolen boots, as some old o., es were left behind. He is accompanied by a woman, from 25 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, rathei stout, her left eye is black, with a cut under- neath ; dressed in light dress, with short sleeves, dark shawl, and dark shabby hat. They were traced to Wolverhampton. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Oswell, Stafford, or to Sergeant Barrett, Penkridge, Staffordshire.— — Bow- street, August 23. Stolen about 9 a. m. on the I7tli instant, by means of housebreaking, at Lower Withington : a pair of Balmoral Boots, brass eyelets, nearly new ; a fine white Shirt, new ; and a leather Purse, with clasp, new, containing a Florin. Supposed by two tramps, short and stout, and dressed in dark clothes, and caps ; one of them is rather bow- legged, and has red hair ; they were traced in the direction of Congleton. Information to be given to Superintendent Dale, County Police Station, Macclesfield, Cheshire.— Bow- street, August 23. Absconded from Handsworth, charged ( on a warrant) with burglary : THOMAS GILBERT, alias BOULTON, alias W. PORTER, about 31 or 32 years of age, 5 ft. 7 in. high, rather slender make, sallow complexion, rather thin on top of the head, brown hair ( uo whiskers), small light moustache, cut short, full eyes, aud brown skin. He has been a soldier, and walks very erect; dressed in a black cloth ribbed jacket, black cloth trousers and vest, black billycock hat, white shirt, old boots, and sometimes carries a short walking- stick ; and WILLIAM BAYLIS, about 23 or 24 years of jage, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, light brown hair, fair complexion ( no whiskers) ; very small light moustache, rather thick lips, looks down, and stoops slightly, rather stoutly built, and l as large feet; dressed in a bl » ck cloth coat, pepper and salt coloured trousers, torn behind < me leg ( showing the lining), dark waistcoat, white shirt, blue necktie, and black billycock hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Woollaston, West Bromwich, Staffordshire.— Bow- st., Aug. 23. Stolen from a field at Bell End, Rowley, during the night of the 16th inst., the property of Mr. J. Taylor of Rowley : one black Horse, 8 years old, 15 hands 1 inch high, long black tail, short mane, hair rubbed off back under saddle, and off top of rump, a white spot at root of one ear, supposed right, and in very good condition. Information to be given to Sergeant Walters, - Police Office, Blackheath near Dudley, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, August 23. Supposed to have been stolen, from Woolvercott, near Oxford, between the 18th and 19th instant: a black horse Pony, about 13 hands higb, 5 years old, in good condition, star in forehead, the fore feet and one hind foot white, the property of Mr. James Harwood. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Fernsby or Inspector Yates, County Police Station, Oxford.— Bow- street, August 23. Description of JOE TAYLOR and JEM LEE, charged with stealing, on the 10th instant, from Orton Longside, two Horses ( since recovered near Woodford, Essex) : one man is about 21 years of age, 5 feet high, light whiskers, light brown hair, grey eyes, stoutly built, sunburnt, tattooed on one arm, ' A. B.,' and walks with a short quick step ; dressed in a sleeved waistcoat, tight- fitting cotton cord trousers with two or three rows of machine stitching round the bottoms, yellow and blue silk neckerchief, and dark cloth cap. The other man is about 20 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, large nose, slightly built, dark complexion, black hair, no whiskers, tattooed on one arm ' T. H.,' aBd walks erect ; dressed in a long blue pilot jacket, red neckerchief, and black billycock hat. They were in company with two women, dressed in shepherd's plaid shawls, who left them to go home in June, one of whom is supposed to be Taylor's Bister. These men also stole two Saddles aud Bridles, not yet recovered. A reward of £ 4 for each offender will be paid to any person who will give such information as shall lead to their appre- hension. They can he identified by the Woodford Police. Information to be given to Superintendent Barker, Norman- cross, Peterborough, Northamptonshire, who holds a warrant for their apprehension.— Bow- street, August 23. BUEGLAKY AND HOUSE BE£ AKOG. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Uphill, near Weston- super- Mare, on the evening of the 22nd instant., the j in Between 1 and 6 p. m. on the 18th instant, the cottage of John Colley, of Sealand, labourer, wa broken and entered, and stolen therein : a black cloth tw ed Coat, bound with black braid, two pockets outside, one inside left breast, black bone buttons ; a pair of black and white Trousers, with Yest to match with light blue buttons ; a blue pilot cloth Overcoat, with black velvet collar, two pockets outside, one inside left breast, with black bone buttons, the property of John Colley. Supposed by two men who were seen near the house at 1 p. m. the same day : one is from 22 to 24 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches higb, dark hair and whiskers all round fac; dressed blue cloth jacket, with black velvet collar and black n property of Mr. Charles Saundeis ; about £ 15 in Gold and I buttons on sleeves, dark grey trousers, black soft billvcock Silver; an English lever Watch, maker Laugford, Bristol, ] hat, and light boots ; the other is from 18 to 20 years of age, has been ^ paired on the lever of the cap inside ; a gold i 5 feet 1 or 2 incheB bigh, light bair, no whiskers, pale face, Albert Chain ; a lady's gold Ring, blue stone ; a pair of gold dressed in black pilot cloth jacket, light trousers and vest, Sleeve Links ; a pair of ditto, red stones set, in each ; a pair cheesecutter cup, and light boots. They are supposed to have of silver Spectacles; a pair of black cloth Trousers and Vest,, gone to Birkenbean or Liverpool. Information to be given LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Description of WILLIAM TAIT, of Consett, who absconded on the llth instant, charged ( on a warrant) with stealing two gold lever Watches, Nos, 14512 and 46080 ; three silver lever Watches, Nos. 12319, 21134, aud 42- 6; five verge Watches, Nos. 7389, 29K78, 6- 2083, 7666, and 11745; and a Geneva Watch, No. 47518: 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, dark complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, large dark moustache, whiskers Dearly all shaven off, and stout figure ; he is a watchmaker, a native of the county of Durham, and has been iu the Metropolitan Police Force ; dressed in grey coat, black cloth troupers and vest, billycock hat, and elastic side boots. Information to be given to Superintendent Oliver, Consett, Durham. — Bow- street, Auqust 25. Absconded on the 18th instant, from Kennington Patk Road, stealing ten gold Keeper Rings, second- hand, nine, twelve, aud eighteen carat; one ditto, single diamond ; one gold scarf Pin, flat bottom bar across ; one tiue gold enamelled Ear- riDg, set with five opals, aud three small diamonds ; four gold Mounts; a pair of new side- spring ( men's) Boots; and £• 2 in Gold, the property of his employer : a youth, 17 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, fair complexion, dark hair and eyes ; dressed in dark mixture suit.— Metropolitan Police, L Division, August 23. Absconded on the 16th instant, from High- road, Totten- ham, embezzling £ 4 : a man 28 years of age, 5 feet 7 iuches high, dark complexion, hair, eyes, whisVers, and moustache ; dressed in grey tweed jacket, light trousers and vest, and black billycock hat.— Metropolitan Police, Y Division, Aug. 23. 2 P O LI C E G A Z E T T E. August 25 Description of a man charged with stealing a quantity of carpenter's Tools ( recovered) from Holcombe, during the nicht of the 8th instant: about 55 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches hi" h, light whiskers, speaks with an Irish accent, leans his head' forward when walking, says he is a carpenter, and a native of the Isle of Man ; dressed in brown coat with pockets at sides, militia trousers with stripe taken out, cossack baots, nearly new, and a bowler hat or cap ; he is believed to be the same man who committed a similar offence at Lower Stone, Berkeley, as advertised in the Police Gazette of tbe llth instant. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Deggan, Frome, or to Sergeant Edmonds, Kilmersdon, Somersetshire.— Bow- sit eet, August 23. Stolen on the 21st instant, from a lodging- house : a dark tweed Jacket, outside pockets and inside breast pocket; a pair of cloth Trousers, green striped corded material; a double- breasted Yest, same material; a calico Shirt, linen front and wristbands ; a pair of men's woven cotton Drawers; a white ground woollen Muffler, pattern— green horses ; a black soft felt billycock Hat; and 3 yards of blue pilot Cloth. By two men : one 21 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, fresh complexion, light sandy hair, pockpitted, slight whiskers, and bow- legged; the other 20 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fresb complexion, dark brown hair, and has a cut mark about 4 inches above right wrist; they are accompanied by two young women, and are supposed to be making for Bristol or Exeter. Information to be given to Superintendent Tyler, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire.— Bow- street, August 23. Stolen on the 20th instant, from furnished lodgings at Northfleet, Kent : a gold Watch, maker Bruce, Cranbourne- street, London ; a gold Neck- chain and Key attached ; £ 5 in Gold ; a red silk knitted Purse, with steel beads, and two steel RiDgs; a topaze Brooch, set in gold frame, has been mendeu ; a cameo Brooch, set in gold with turquoise round ; a mourning Ring, with ' William Batten' engraved upon it ; and a German silver albert Chain. By a woman, about 20 years of age, fair complexion, auburn hair; dressed in black silk dress, with satin stripes, and brown hat, turned up at tbe side, with a bunch of cherries and grapes upon it ; she is of very ladylike manners, and represented that her father was a proprietor of jaunting cars in London ; when she engaged the apartments, she was accompanied by a man about 50 years of age. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Coppinger, Kent County Constabulary, Chatham.— Bow- street, August 23. Stolen on the 17th instant, from New Kent- road, Newington : a lady's gold Geneva Watch, large and flat, gold Chain, two Lockets, one for likeness, one set red stone, and gold Pencil- case with cross at top ( chased) attached ; four gold Rings, one keeper, one set blue turquoise, one fancy, set various stones ; one set with single ruby ; a pair of long gold Ear- rings ; six lace Handkerohiefs ; several pairs cotton Stockings, some white, some black and white stripe, some scarlet and white ditto, ' H. J.' in red cotton ; three linen Chemises, trimmed embroidery ; three pairs Drawers, with frills ; a white embroidery Petticoat; two blue silk Sashes ; a print Dress ; two black Skirts, one satin, one silk ; a black straw Hat, trimmed blue feather ; two pairs kid Gloves, one blue, one black : a black cloth Jacket, trimmed silk ; a brown leather Purse; a pair cashmere Boots ; and £ 2 3d. 4d. By a woman, 23 years of age, short aud stout and fair complexion ; supposed to be dressed in the stolen clothe^— MeiropoltiM Police, M Division, August 20. FRAUDS AMD AGGEAYATIB MISDEMEANOUR Obtained on the 16th instant, from Wellington street, B- ithnal- green ; a black Horse, 13 hands higb, ' J. N.' on near shoulder, hole and slit in off ear ; a Cart, painted green, picked out light green ; and a set of silver- plated Harness. By a man, 36 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, stout make, and had the appearance of a carman — Metropolitan Police, K Division, August 25. Obtained by fraud £ 70: by THOMAS EDWARD DEWHURST, a schoolmaster, says he is a graduate of the University of Oxford, 29 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark complexion and hair, small whiskers ( no beard or moustache); dressed respectably iu dark clothes and coloured shirt. He has a relation residing in Birmingham. Warrant issued.— Metropolitan Police, T Division, August 23. Absconded, WILLIAM GIDDY, late of 5, Bold- street, Wortley, Leeds, Yorkshire, charged at Northwich, with obtaining several sums of Money from tradesmen, by false pretences : he is going about tbe country calling on shop- keepers, and offering for sale flexible stamps, he gets an advance of money, saying he will send the stamps in a few days : he is about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, slender make, dark hair and moustache, of respectable appearance, and good address. Information to be given to Superintendent Rowbottom, Middlewich, or to Inspector Dutton, Northwich, Cheshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, August 23. Description of C. H. CURRAN. alias JAMES CURRAN, alias WILLIAM GRIFFIS, who is charged ( on a warrant) with fraud at Newcastle- on- Tyne : from 30 to 35 years of age, about 5 feet 9 inches high, dark brown hair, dark eyes, no whiskers, slight moustache, deeply pockpitted, an anchor tattooed on back of one of his hands, and was in the habit of keeping a glove on the left; dressed in a loose light coloured overcoat, breast pin ( in the shape of a hand), dark grey trousers, and round hard black felt hat. He is very talkative, speaks the Cornish dialect, and is said to be known at Penzance. Represents himself to be a wholesale fruit merchant, and left Newcastle by the 11.23 p. m. train on the 6th instant for the south, accompanied by a fashionably dressed female, about 23 years of age, slender, thin features, flaxen hair, blue eyes, and spoke with a Scotch accent. Infor- mation to be given to the Chief Constable, Newcastle- on- Tyne, Northumberland.—- Brno- street, August 18. MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATIONS. Committed for trial on two eh urges of obtaining goods by false pretences at Trowbridge : ANN GINGELL, about 44 years of age, rather tall, and has a peculiarity about the lef£ eye, speaks with a north country accent., and says she has a son apprenticed to a grocer in Manchester. She was con- victed of theft at Salisbury in September, 1873, and sentenced to 6 months imprisonment, in the name of ANN BATES, which she admits was an assumed name, having been pre- viously known in the name of ALLOWAY ; she says she buried her husband at Clapham in June, 1874. Information to be given to Superintendent White, Trowbridge, Wilts.— Bow- street, August, 25. Remanded until the 24th instant, on a charge of larceny : ROBERT DICKENS, 26 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh complexion, light hair cut short, clean shaved, mole on right side, scar on right elbow, cut on right side of face, near the eye ; dressed in short drab slop, dark grey trousers, old lace- up boots, and dark cloth cap ; he says he has worked on railways at Kimberley, near Nottingham, and at Sheffield as a carter, and also at Leeds. Remanded until the 25th instant, charged with stealing a WxfceTi from James Weekly at Littleworth on the 17th inst. : WILLIAM THOMPSON; 32 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches higa, dark d^^ KKM, clean shaved, dark brown hair cut short; dressed in short drab slop, fustian trousers rolled up to the knees, large light- coloured neckerchief, black cloth cap with a strap across the front, and strong navvy boots ; he says that he is a native of Winethorpe, Liiecolnsbire, and has worked on railways in the north of England. Description of EDWARD BROWNING, alias BEDFORD, charged ( on a warrant) with stealing the above Watch, and who is not yet in custody : 22 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fresh complexion, dark hair, cut short, dark eyes, clean shaved; dressed in pilot jacket, with large bone buttons, soft felt hat with band, moleskin trousers, rolled up to his knees, blue worsted stockings, and strong navvy boots. The watch is an old silver verge, Roman figures, the little hand is bent, ' J. W.
