OBTAINING The substance of all Informations received in cases of Felony and of Misd> manors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other tnarhj of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 5691 FRIDAY, JULY 2, 1875. Netlcc.— It is requested that all communications ior the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably neisssary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all betters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Ah • ntees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Eorms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. INFORMATIONS MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Description of THOMAS TIERNEY, who is charged with causing the death of a man whilst fighting with him on the night of the 16th instant, in Sheffield : about 25 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, dark complexion, dark brown hair, very stoutly built, his nose has been broken, and has lost a portion of first right finger; he is a slater, and was dressed in dark coat and vest, cotton cord trousers, and low felt hat. He may be accompanied by a little woman, about 25 years of age. He is a native of Birmingham. Informa- tion to be given to Chief Constable Jackson, Central Police Office, Sheffield.— Bov.- street, June 30. Description of PATRICK McGOWAN, who absconded from the borough of Middlesborough on the 24th instant, charged with assaulting and inflicting grievous bodily harm on one David Conway, labourer : he is 25 years of age, 5 feet 5f inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, small light whiskers and moustache, nose rather large and sharp at end, stoutly huilt, has a scar on left cheek, is a labourer, and a native of Leitrim, Ireland; generally dressed in a suit of dark clothes and hard felt hat. Information to be given to Chief Constable Saggerson, Middlesborough, Yorkshire, who holds a worrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, June 28. Stolen from the person on the 23rd instant: a silver lever Watch, No. 10073, maker Metcalf, Preston, on dial. By a man, about 25 years of age, low set, swarthy com plexion, small eyes, no whiskers, and is supposed to be a foreigner; dressed in light grey suit, and light billycock hat. Information to be given to Head Constable Oglethorpe, Borough Police Station, Preston, Lancashire.— Bow- street, June 28. Stolen from the person at Henley Railway Station, on the 23rd instant: a gold Watch, No. 376, maker Desbois, London. Stolen from the person on the 21st instant, at Stourport Fete and Races : a silver open- faee lever Watch, maker William Cooke, Stourport, No. 1126. Information to be given to Superintendent Raby, Stourport, Worcestershire.— Bow- street, June 25. Stolen from the person at Henley Regatta, on the 23rd instant: A black leather double Field Glass, maker' Elliot, Lon- don.' A reward of £ 1 will be paid on its recovery and conviction of the offender. A gold hunting Watch, engraved flowers on one side of case, a place for crest to be engraved, maker's name ' Catherwood, London.' An open- face ( white enamel) gold Watch, maker's name ' Rowell, Oxford' Information to be given to Superintendent Iremonger, Berks Constabulary, Maidenhead.— Bow- street, June 25. BURGLAR? AND MOUSE BREAKING. During the night of the 25th ultimo, the following places at Rhyl, were broken and entered, and stolen : From the refreshment room on the pier : about 8s. in Silver, a box of Cigars, a box of Cheroots, four pint bottles of Champagne, and a small box of mixed Biscuits. From the cloak room on the pier : three glass Jars, each containing 4 lbs. of Sweets, one acid drops, one peppermint paradise, and the other mixed fruit, a quantity of brazil Nuts, six dozen Hat Guards, and 3s. 3| d. in Silver and Copper. And from a butcher's shed : the hinder part of a Sheep. Information to be given to Superintendent Hughes, Holy- well, or to Inspector McLaren, Rhyl, Flintshire.— Bow- street, July 2. Information to be given to Chief Constable Potts, Town Hall, Blackburn, Lancashire.— Bow- street, June 30. Stolen, on the 24th inst., by means of house- breaking : one pair of black cloth Trousers, man's size ; one pair of dark grey mixture Trousers; one pair of slate- coloured ditto, narrow stripes ; one dark mixture tweed Overcoat; one pair of Levant Boots, elastic sides, nearly new; two white felt Hats; one ladies' black velvet Jacket; one trimmed with beaver fur; one large size silver plated Teapot; one small silver Cruet; two pairs of silver sugar Tongs, one quite new, the other part worn, marked I. S. R. ; two dozen silver Tea- spoons, one dozen marked I. S. R.; four Table Spoons ; two children's silver- plated Mugs ; two dozen plated Forks ; two Salt Spoons; one small Telescope ; and a pair of Opera Glasses ; two dozen ivory- hafted Knives ; and one dozeu with fluted handles. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Hunt, Central Police Office, Town Hall, Leeds.— Bow- street, June 28. The dwelling- house of James S. Gower, of Hook, near Odiham, Hants, was entered between 2 and 4 p. m. on the 22nd instant ( the race day), by means of picklock), and the following property stolen therein: a Cream Pot and two Table Spoons, silver, marked ' V.'; a Ladle, four Dessert and four Tea Spoons, silver; two large plated Brooches; a small gold, to ; a lady's gold Watch Chain; a gold Locket, con- taining Hair, with a Guinea attached; two Necklaces about £ 2 in Silver ; and a pair of gold wire Bracelets, 1 inch wide, the snap of one broken and repaired with yellow thread. Two men of the following description were seen on the premises about the time the offence was committed : one about 40 years of age, tall, stoutly built, sandy whiskers, and dressed in dark cloth jacket and high- crowned hat; the other was 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, thin pale face, small light whiskers, and was wearing a dark speckled cloth jacket. Also stolen, during the afternoon of the same day, in the dwelling- house of George Windle, of North Warnborough, Odiham, which was entered by a skeleton key: two silver Table Spoons; six silver Tea Spoons, five marked ' G. M. L.', the other ' G. M. P.'; a pair of silver Sugar Tongs, marked 4 G. M. L.'; and a gold Watch Chain, curb pattern. Description of CHARLES FIRTH, a butcher, charged uttering a forged Cheque, for £ 7 15s., and who has also uttered the following forged cheques: No. 128101, Leicester, June 19, 1875, the Leicestershire Banking Company, pay Mr. Nichols cr bearer .£ 16, signed J. W. Smith, crossed Bassett & Co,, Newport Pagnall, to Barclay & Co.; Leicester, June 12, 1875, No. 128098, the Leicestershire Banking Company, pay J. Smart or bearer, £ 4 15s., signed It. Humphrey, crossed National Provincial Bank, East Dere- ham ; a Cheque, paid into the pay office, Nottingham Cattle Market, and signed R. B. Humphrey, for £ 16 2s. He pro- cured a cheque book from the Leicestershire Banking Com- pany, containing 24 cheques, numbered from 128089 to 128112, and will probably try to put off other cheques at cattle markets, & c. : he is about 25 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, thin face, sallow complexion, rather broad shoulders; was dressed in dark blue coat, light vest, and stiff billycock hat. Information to be given to Chief Constable Farndale, Police Office, Leicester, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, July 2. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person by a fellow- lodger whilst sleeping in an outbuilding at Laceby Farm, Standedge, between 12 and 4 a. m. on the 25th instant: a silver lever Watch, No. 4,010, maker's name Rodolph, London, had white dial, sunk seconds, and steel hands; attached was a gold plated Albert Guard, snake pattern, and a Locket, bible pattern; pair of watertight Boots, newly heeled, right boot toe- bitted and fastened on with clog nails, and the left one worn off at the toe. By a tramp, a winder in a cotton mill, who was hay- making on the farm, about 33 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, sallow complexion, pimpled nose, from drink, blue eyeB, short dark hair, moustache, and slender build; dressed in dark cloth coat and vest, dirty moleskin trousers, all much worn, billycock hat, and wearing the stolen boots; has worked in mills in the neighbourhood of Oldham, Ashton, and Stalybridge. Information to be given to Inspector Whincup, West Biding Constabulary, Saddleworth, Yorkshire.— Bow- vtreet, June 30. Stolen from the person of a gentleman, when in a railway train between York and Thirsk, on the 18th instant : a gold Watch, No. 1804, with gold Albert attached. Information to be given to Chief Constable Cook, Hull, Yorkshire,— Bow- r « et, June 28, entered by means of unfastening the bar window, and the following property stolen from the bar : 250 Habana and 105 Queen's Cigars, the property of Edward Fermor. Sup- posed by a man who was seen loitering about the neighbour- hood during the day, about 30 years of age, 5 ft. 6 or 7 ins. high, fair complexion, brown hair, whiskers and moustache ; dressed in brown suit with high black hat, and carried an umbrella. An umbrella was left under the bar window. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Lewes, or to Superintendent Pocock, Cuckfield, Sussex.— Bow- street, July 2. During the night of the 27th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. William Goodyer, Station- street, West Bromwich, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a blaek velvet Jacket; a light brown cloth Jacket; a dark grey waterproof Cloak ; a scarlet and black Table Cover ; two lir. en Table Cloths ; 4J yards of grey dress Material ; a lady's Satchel, with Purse, containing 10a. ; a baby's drab cloth Cloak ; two pairs of Stockings ; three Chemises; and a blue Feather. Information to be given to Superintendent Woollaston, Police Office, West Bromwich, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, June 30. Early on the morning of the 27th instant, the residence of the Chaplain of the County Gaol at Aylesbury, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a pair of lace- up Boots, toe- capped and clumped ; four electro- plated Salt Spoons, and one Table ditto, beaded pattern ; a rump Steak, loaf of Bread, and a Bottle of Brandy. Supposed by an Irishman, a tramp, 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, light complexion, and small whiskers and beard ; dressed in a ragged grey coat, dirty light trousers, and billycock hat. He carries a short stick, and sings at beer- houses. Information to be given at the Police Station, Aylesbury, Bucks.— Bow street. June 30. Between 6 p. m. on the 26th and 5' 30 a. m. on the 27th instant, the offices at Phcenix Mill, Blackburn, were broken and entered, and stolen therein, the property of Mr. William Shaw, manager : A silver lever Watch, chronometer balance, jewelled in every action, sunk seconds, No. 920. An American silver lever Watch, engine- turned case, white dial, blue steel fingers, makers Whittam and Moss ( Fogg's Patent), No. 741011. A silver lever or Geneva Boston Watch, white dial, engine- turned case, blue steel fingers, sunk seconds, jewelled in eight holes. A gold Guard, open pattern, much worn. A gold Albert Guard, close pattern, 9 carats. 2 gold Seals, one with round cut glass in centre. 5 pairs of light steel Spectacles, dipped with white wax at ends. 4 round steel Cutters. About £% 15s, in Money. brass- mounted Harness, brass hames and rings on the same, and cart Saddle; also a nearly new large size Spring Cart, chocolate colour, lined with red, and the name of ' Henry R. Wren, Whitley, on the Cart behind, with the initials ' H. B. W.' iu gilt letters on side pannels and Collin's patent axles. .£ 15 reward will be paid for such information as shall lead to the recovery and conviction sf the offender or offenders. Information to be given to the Chief Constable of Berkshire, Reading.— Bow- street, Juli/ 2. Supposed stolen and left at Horncastle on the 25th ult.: a light brown nag Mare, 7 years old, 14 hands 2 inches high, black legs, white off hind fetlock, plain head, Collar and Saddle marked : also stolen a Saddle and Bridle with plated buckles. Information to be given to Superintendent Jarvis, Police Station, Horncastle, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, July 2. Stolen from a stable at Livesey, about 4 a. m. on the 28th instant : a bright bay cart Mare, about 15 hands 1 inch high, white face and hind legs, wall eye on right side, 4 years old, and in good condition ; also stolen a Saddle and Bridle. A man was seen riding the above mare towards Brindle, and is supposed to have gone in the direction of Ormskirk and Liverpool. Information to be given to Superintendent Read, County Police Office, Blackburn, Lancashire.— Boxo- stieet, June 30. Stolen from a field in Middlesborough, on the night of the 27th instant: a light brown mare Pony, aged, 13J hands high, slack backed, both hind feet white, grey about face, and has a patch of grey just above the hock of right hind leg, long thin switch tail, and in fair condition. Information to be given to Chief Constable Saggerson, Middlesborough,— Bow street, June 30. Stolen from a field at Maidenwell, near Louth, the pro- perty of G. H. Browne, Esq.: five Lambs, marked ' B' on the near side, between the 19th and 26th instant. Whoever will give such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the Lambs, shall receive £ 7 7s. reward. Information to be given to Superintendent Thorsby, County Police Station, Louth, Lincolnshire.— Boil- street, June 30. Stolen from a field in the borough of Walsall, during the night of the 22nd instant, a bright bay half- bred Horse, 15 hands high, aged, lame in right foot, and in good condi- tion ; and a dark brown Pony, 13 hands high, aged, in good condition. Information to be given to Chief Constable Cater, Police Office, Walsall, Staffordshire.— Boio- it., June 28. Stolen from Whitley Common, near Coventry, on the 10th instant: a dark brown Pony, about 12 hands high, short bushy mane, black legs, bang tail, white mark on back, and two small white marks on back of fore legs. Whoever will give such information that will lead to the apprehension 2 POLICE GAZETTE. July 2 and conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the pony shall receive £ 2 reward. Information to be given to Superintendent Palmer, Kenilwortb, Warwickshire,— Bow- street, June 28. Stolen on the 19 th instant, from a field at Highbury Hill: a dark grey Russian mare Pony, 3 years old, 13 hands high, long tail, off hind hock white, carries its head forward, and shore nose. Supposed by a man dressed in dark clothes. — Metropolitan Police, Y Division, June 28. Stolen from a stable at Stanhope Nursery, Cudham, during the night of the 24th instant : a grey Mare, 16 hands high, 6 years old, scar on near shoulder, bruised on both hocks, outside of near hock- bone a little thick, and tail cut square. Information to be given to Superintendent O'Kill, Police Court, Sevenoaks, Kent.— Bow- street, June 28. Stolen from a field at Fenny Stratford, on the night of the 24th instant : a dark brown nag Mare, 14J hands high, 9 years old, a fast trotter, blaek legs, mane, and tail, white star on forehead, near fore shoe worn down ; an old- fashioned spring Gig, painted black with a little green intermixed, seat and two cushions, drab colour ; a brown- handled Gig Whip ; a set of black Harness, brown collar with brass terrets ; and a pair of Reins, much worn; the property of Mr. Thomas Hammond, farmer. Two men passed through Dunstable about 2- 30 a. m. on the 25th instant, with a horse and ' gig corresponding with the above, and were going in the direction of London ; the men were of the following description : one about 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, stout, and dressed in dark clothes ai. d black billycock hat; the other about 21 years of age, thin, and dressed in dark clothes and black billycock hat; the clothes of both men were shabby. £ 10 reward will be paid to any person who will give such infor- mation as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the property. In- formation to be given to Superintendent Hedley, Police Station, Fenny Stratford, Bucks.— Bow- street, June 28. Stolen from a fold on Poulton Farm, near Marlborough, the property of Mr. John Tanner, between the 8th and 18th instant: 33 Ewes, some four and six- tooth, and others full- mouthed, not shorn, marked ' T,' either on the near shoulder, side, or hip, and some on the off side ; also 39 Chilver Tegs, not shorn, marked ' T' on the near hip. Whoever will ^ ive such information as shall lead to the apprehension and con- viction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the sheep, shall receive £ 100 reward. Information to be given to Mr. Tanner, or to Deputy Chief Constable Stretten, Marl- borough, Wilts.— Bow- street, June 25. Stolen from a field at East Moulsey, during the night of the 14th instant: a bay Cob Horse, chipped knees, grey hairs on face, scar on left cheek, in good condition, and a mahogany villiage Cart, new shafts, wheels varnished, and a set of plated silver mounted Harness. By two meB, one 24 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark complexion, hair, whiskers, and moustache, and stoutly built; the other is 20 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, dark complexion, small dark mous- tache. Both were dressed in ribbed coat and trousers, and soft felt hats, having the appearance of gipsey horse dealers. — Metropolitan Police, V Division, June 25. A red shorthorn Bullock, fat, worth £ 25, and having of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, light complexion, light brown hair, and small whiskers ; dressed is light cord trousers, white fustian jacket and waistcoat, and cap. Information to be given to Inspector Vail, Woolpit, or to Police Constable Burrows, Beyton, Suffolk, who holds a warrant for his appre- hension.— Bow- street, July 2. Absconded from his lodging at Blaina, between the hours of 7 and 8 a. m. on the 23rd ultimo, charged with stealing an open face silver Geneva Watch, gold numbers on dial, No. 68,767 ; one black coat, pockets on hips, one pocket inside left breast, and velvet collar ; a black cloth Vest, no collar, taken in a little at back of neck ; blaek cloth Trousers, full fall, the linings opefted on the seat; one light striped cloth Vest, double- breasted . two Welsh plaid flannel Shirts, © ne red ground with red and black stripes forming a square, the other, grgf ground with red, black, and white stripes forming a square ; 5s. in Money ; one black bowler Hat; and a pair of elastic- side Boots ; the property of John Monkley and William Monkley : GEORGE DAVIES, alias GEORGE WILLIAMS, 23 or 24 years of age, 5 ft. 4 or 5 ins. high, proportionate make, pale sallow complexion, dark brown hair, brown eyes, sinister looking ; dressed in a dark cloth monkey jacket, old light striped cloth trousers, black hard bowler hat, and elastic- side boots; may be wearing the stolen clothes and soft Bowler hat. He is a native of Pont- vane near Brecon, a painter or stoker, or may be found working with plate- layers, or firing boilers in works. He was discharged from Usk Gaol on the 4th ultimo, having been convicted of a burglary in August, 1874, at Monmouth. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Aber- gavenny, to Superintendent Fowler, Tredegar, or to Sergeant Williams, Police Station, Biaina, Monmouthshire, who holds the warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, July 2. Absconded on the 26th instant, embezzling £ 50, the monies of his] employers : a man 28 years of age, 5 feet 6 ins. high, dark complexion, dark brown hair and whiskers, slight impediment in speech ; dressed in dark blue cutaway coat, dark blue trousers, dark striped vest, and dark felt hat.— Metropolitan Police, W Division, June 30. Description of JOHN JONES, native of Pwllheli, Carnarvonshire, slate quarryman, late a collier's labourer at Mold, charged at Mold, on a warrant, with larceny : he is 22 or 23 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark com- plexion, dark hair, and small dark moustache, high cheek \ bones, and no doubt he will be accompanied by a woman, 36 years of age, low set, dark| hair, large features, high cheek bones, and rosy cheeks ; supposed to have, gone to Liverpool, or to the colliery districts in Lancashire ; they left Mold on the morning of the 23rd iust. Information to be given to Inspector Minshull, Mold, Flintshire.— Bow- street, June 30. Absconded, charged with having, at Ely, on the 14th Jan. last, embezzled £ 79 18s. 6d., the monies of Cornell Fison, and others, merchants, of Thetford, Norfolk: CRANE GOLDSMITH, a merchant's clerk, between 45 and 50 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, dark brown hair, short behind, bald on top of head, large brown whiskers and mous- tache, has two false front teeth fastened in with gold wire,, which can be seen when he speaks ; he walks in a bustling manner, and swings his right arm very much. He took ti ain at Brandon on the 18th instant, and passed through Ely, going towards London; he is likely to emigrate, having' formerly lived in America; he has relatives at Clapham Csmmon, Camberwell, and in Hertfordshire, and he is known in market towns in Herts, Essex, Cambs, Norfolk, and Suffolk. £ 10 reward will be paid to any person giving such information to Superintendent Smith, Ely, Cambridgeshire^, as will lead to his apprehension.— Bow- street, June 25. FELONIES. ( Net otherwise described). Stolen about 10 p. m. the 19th instant, from the vault of a public- house in Deansgate, Manchesttr : a little Girl, named LIZZIE SMITH, 2| years of age ; dressed in brown stuff frock, trimmed at the bottom with puce and at the waist with fringe, a scarlet petticoat, a brown ditto, with red cloth at the bottom, a white flannel ditto with three tucks, faded red and puce striped socks and clogs, a link of red beads round the neck ; and has gold sleepers in her ears. By a man about 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, promi- nent nose, with blue mark across it, a tuft of reddish hair on the chin, rather weak eyes, has a mark on one side of neck, and stoops a little; dressed in a black cloth suit, and cap with tassel at top. He belongs tc Oldham, and goes by the name of RAT. Information to be given to the Chief Con- stable, Town Hall, Manchester.— Bow- street, June 25. ' Lot 93' FRAUDS AND AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS. Obtained by false pretences, on the 19th ult. : 13 yards of black Silk. By WILLIAM JOYCE, for whose appre- hension a warrant is issued : he is 23 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, black curly hair, dark eyes, and sallow com- plexion. Information to be given to Inspector Bailey, City of London Police Office, Dectective Department, 26, Old Jewry, E. C.— Bow- street, July 2. NXSOBLLAlHBailB Description of a man who has given his name RICHARD DAVIES of Lincoln, dealer, who is remanded for passing; several counteifeit half- sovereigns in the neighbourhood of Wrexham : he endeavoured to make his escape when appre- hended, and in doing so threw away two other counterfeit half sovereigns : he is about 5 feet 8| inches high, states he is 56 years of age, stoutly made, close shaven, grey hair, cut short and parted down the middle, slight scar on left side of nose ; dressed in a dark grey, small pattern check cloth suit ( when passing the coin he was dressed in a light suit), woollen plaid check shirt, elastic side boots, and hard billy- cock hat, had on him a silver watch with gold Albert chain ; he has lost two first joints of middle finger of the left hand, he has given other names, and" stated that he resided at 16, Weliington- road, Liverpool. It is supposed that on the- 25th instant, he obtained a Post Office Order giving his name as E. GATHANY, of Derby. His right name is WILLIAM WHITTAKER; he was convicted at the Hertfordshire Quarter Sessions, December, 1872, on a charge of obtaining goods under false pretences, and sentenced to 9 months im- prisonment ; he was also committed in November, 1865, to the same gaol for 14 days, for attempting to pick pockets at Leominster ; it is said that he is also known at Usk, Mon- mouthshire ; he is identified as being the same man by photograph forwarded from Hereford County Gaol.
