C. *** Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and a worn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, togethor with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. AB no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, alt Letters addressed to the Editor most be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should bo forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. INFORMATIONS MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. A man of the name of James Wilson having been found dead in one of the streets in Halifax early on the morning of the 25th day of April last, and a coroner's jury having since found a verdict of ' Wilful murder against some person or persona unknown,' Her Majesty's Secretary of State for the Home Department has authorised the payment of a reward of £ 100 to any person who will give such information and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murderer or murderers; and the Home Secretary will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice, not being the person who actually committed the murder, who will give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. Information to be given to Chief Constable Clarkson, Town Hall, Halifax,— Bow- street, May 19. Absconded from Middlesbrough on the 16th instant, charged with assaulting and inflicting grievous bodily harm upon John Richardson, Police Constable: MICHAEL McCARTHY, an Irishman, a labourer in iron works, 27 or 26 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fair complexion, light hair and whiskers, and stout make ; dressed in a pilot jacket, turning brown, supposed moleskin trousers, and cloth cap. Information to be given to Chief Constable Saggerson, Middlesbrough, Yorkshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street. May 19. Further information respecting the property stolen at the booking office of the Bagillt Railway Station, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 14th instant : three boxes of Cigars were stolen therefrom ( not Tobacco, as previously stated), and the Parcel contained a black cloth frock Coat, two pockets behind, four buttons on each side, and lined with black alpaca, and a pair of black and slate- colour striped Trousers, brass buttons, and lined throughout witli calico. Information to be given to Superintendent Hughes, Holywell, Flintshire.— Bow- street, May 21. Between 10 p. m. on the 13th and 6 a. m. on the 14th instant, the dwelling- house of Benjamin Roberts, of Llan- saintffraid Glyndyfrdwy, near Corwen, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a pair of grey mixture cloth Trousers, with black stripes down the sides, and a grey cloth double- breasted Vest, trimmed with brown horn buttons, and two yellow buttons inside. Supposed by a tramp, 35 or 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, broad red face, and downcast look ; dressed in black jimcrow hat, dark blue cloth coat, light moleskin trousers, much soiled on the knees, and a fresh patch outside right thigh, near the pocket. Information to be given to Sergeant Williams, Corwen, Merionethshire.— Bow- street, May 19. Between 11 p. m. 15th and 6 a. m. on the 16th instant, the residence of mr. Charles Chapman, the Sowes, Buglaw- ton, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen therein : two blue pilot cloth Overcoats, one a Driving, sleeves lined with violet coloured silk, two pockets outside and one inside left breast, and cloth buttons; a pair of gentleman's shooting Boots, brass eyelets, toe- capped, and newly mended ; a pair of lady's Boots, plain morocco, patent leather toes ; a pair of woollen Drawers and a woollen Singlet, men's size ; a Towel ; and a Sponge. Information to be given to Superintendent Rowbottom, Middlewich, or to Sergeant Gosling, Police Station, Astbury, Congleton, Cheshire.— Bow- street, Moy 19. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Llandewy- Ystradenny, between 3 and 9 p . in, on the 13th instant, the property of Mr. William Crofts : a light grey cloth Suit, with dark stripe down the side ; a blue witney Overcoat with a velvet collar, a blue serge Jacket, a grey tweed Jacket and Trousers, an old Chemise, a linen Towel, a blue and white plaid bundle Handkerchief, a fancy striped Apron, two linen Collars, £ 10 10s. in Gold, a quantity of Silver, two loayes of Bread, a plum Cake, and some Ham. Supposed by tramps attending Penybont Fair. Information to be given to Chief Constable Wheeldon, Penybont, Radnorshire.— Bow- strect, May 15. - Between 10 a. m. and 1 p. m. on the 10th lEstant, the fresh complexion, rather good - looking, light hair and moustache, and no whiskers ; generally dressed in dark blue coat and vest, and black trousers, or in a suit of black, and velvet cap. He is a native of Chadwell, or Chadwellheatb, Essex. It is supposed that they have taken with them an old- fashioned Gig with high back and low wheels, body painted black, wheels and shafts red. They left a young Colt, usually driven by them at Marske. These men were seen at Rosley Hill Fair, Cumberland, on the 17th instant, dealing with the two Ponies. The brown one was sold, and has since been recovered. Information to be given to Superintendent Priest, Guis- borough, or to Sergeat K itching, South Eston, Middleabro', Yorkshire.— Bow- street, May 21. Stolen on the 18th instant, from the centre drive on the West Brighton Estate : a brown mare Donkey, 8 years old, white nose, very small legs, and in good condition. Supposed to have been stolen by two men, chair menders, one of whom has a wooden leg. Information to be given to Chief Superin- tendent Breach, Town Hall, Hove, Sussex.— Bow- it., May 21. Stolen from Millwr, near Holywell, on the 11th instant: a bay mare Pony, about 10 hands high, aged, hair rubbed off both shoulders, recently shod, and in fair condition. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Hughes, Holywell, Flintshire.— Bow- street, May 21. Stolen about 10 30 a m. on the 12th instant: a mottled grey Pony, about 12£ hands high, both knees chipped, rather dark facj, and short tail; also a small village Dogcart, painted chocolate- colour, picked out with black, and a set of plated Harness, in very good condition, and with black shiny collar. By a lad, 16 or 17 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, dark brown curly hair, and slight build; dressed in a dark coat, and brown trousers and vest; he went to Mr. Greenyer'a yard in Portland- place, Worthing, on the 12th instant, and hired the above pony and cart for two hoars' ride, but clid not return ; he was traced to Epsom the same day. Information to be given to Superintendent Puttock, Police Station, Worthing, Sussex.— Bovj- st., May 19. Stolen on the night of the 13th instant, from a field at Lazenby, near Redcar. in the North Riding of Yorkshire : a dark brown horse Pony, in good condition, 10 or 11 years old, about 13 hands high, square cut tail, a good deal of hair on legs, and a patch of white hair on the back caused by the saddle. Also on the same night, from a field at Yearby, near Redcar, a dark grey horse Pony, 3 years old, about 13 hands 2 inches high, has a short square cut tail, and was without shoes. dwelling- house of Charles Mulley, of the parish of Hadleigh, 1 £ 5 reward will be paid on the conviction of the offender or labourer, was entered, and the following property stolen : an offenders and recovery of the Ponies. Information to be old silver pair- case W^ atcli, cases very thin, Roman figures, a 1 given to Superintendent Prest, North Riding Constabulary piece chipped off the face between the X and XI, steel Chain, brass Key and Seal attached ; also a rough grey Overcoat, half worn, single- breasted, dark buttons, pockets on the hips, and is lined with red and black plaid. A tramp is suspected of having committed the above offence : he is about 5 feet FORGERY. A warrant has been issued for the apprehension of WM. ROE, a native of Melton Mowbray, who absconded from Southampton on the 7th instant, charged with forging a cheque for £ 22 : 35 years of age, about 5 feet 10 inches high, black whiskers, no beard or moustache, slight build, and. is a the" Coggeshall road near Colchester, going in the direction of dairyman ; he generally dresses in black frock coat, dark Braintee. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person on the 19th instant: a gold Eng- lish Watch, maker Benson London, No. 34388, and a gold link Chain, between Hitchin and King's- cross, Gt. Northern Railway, London. £ 2 reward will be paid for the recovery of the watch and conviction of the offender or offenders. Stolen from the person of Morgan Jones, of Talgarth, at Builth Fair, ton the 10th instant: a gold consular lever Watch, with cream colour dial, maker's name ' Richard Webb, Brecon,' No. 345. An inscription engraved on the outside of the back case in Welsh. Information to be given to Sergeant Flye, Builth, or at the Constabulary Office, Brecon.- Bow- street, Mav 14. Stolen from the person on the Eastbourne Racecourse on the 10th instant: & gold Geneva Watch, with seconds hand, maker's name Wilson ; also a gold English Watch. Stolen by means of housebreaking at the parish of Hartfield, on the 11th instant: an old- fashioned silver verge Watch, figures on dial, no glass ; a gold wedding Ring, has been repaired; a small gold wire Ear- ring; a Half Sovereign; and 6s. in Silver. Also from the house of Stephen Jenner : an old silver verge Watch, with brass guard Chain attached ; and an old silver Geneva Watch, Roman letters on dial, steel curb Chain attached. Also from the house of John Grant : a silver Pencil- case, with ivory top. •>• Information to be given to Superintendent Kennard, East Grinstead, Sussex.— Bow- street, May 14. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. On the 9th instant a cottage at Worplesdon, Surrey, was broken into, and several articles of Wearing Apparel stolen therein, which have all been recovered, and traced to a tramp of the following description : about 30 years of age, 5 ft. 8 ins. high, light hair and small whiskers with slight moustache ; dressed in an old dark cloth coat, military trousers with stripes out, and old boots. He had a discharge from the army. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Barker, Surrey Constabulary, Guildford.— Bow- it-, May 21. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen from the stables of H. Hall, Esq., Alton, Hants, at 2.30 a. m., on the 18th instant: a brown mare Pony, 14 hands high, aged, both knees scarred, rather short, and square tail. Also a small Dog Cart, painted black and fine yellow, lined ; Stubbs, maker; a set of brass mounted Harness, nearly new ; and three double- barrelled Guns,— two by Osbourne and one by Bisse'l, patent central fire, twelve bore, and one having ' E. H.' on shield. £ 10 reward will be paid to any person giving such information to Superintendent Cheyney, Alton, Hants, as shall lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders.— Bow- street, May 21. Description of two men, charged with stealing two Ponies from Lazenby and Yearby, North Riding of York- shire, on the night of the 13th instant, both native! of Essex, but have been at Marske- by- tlie Sea, Yorkshire, for some time, and have absconded from that place : EDWARD HARTGROVE, alias PIGEON COTE NED, about 40 years of age, about 5 feet 8i inches high, dark hair and whiskers, inclined to stoop, and turns liis feet outwards ; generally dressed in green checked trousers, black cloth coat, and cap with double peaks. He is a native of Ongar, Essex. And WILLIAM ALLEN, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, or 5 feet 11 inches, slender build, Stolen on the night of the 15th instant, from a field on the road leading from Monmouth to Redbrook, in the borough of Monmouth : a light- coloured gelding Donkey, medium size, aged, in fair condition, long tail, and a good worker : a man having the appearance of a navvy, dressed in dark clothes and soft bowler hat, was seen between 11 and 12 of the same night riding the Donkey in the direction of Mon- mouth or the Forest. Information to be given to Head Constable Wheeldon, Borough Police, Monmouth.— Bow- street, May 19. Stolen, on the 6th inst., from Bradford Street, Birming- ham, the property of Mathew Copson, Wood Lane, Greets Green, Westbromwich : a brown Horse, aged, white face, white feet, broken knees, 14 hands high, and was attached to a spring cart, painted dark colour, red wheels, and the name of " Mathew Copson, West Bromwicli" painted on the side. Information to be given to Chief Constable Glossop, Police Office, Birmingham.— Bow- street, May 19. Description of a man who, on the 5th instant, obtained seven Cattle from two auctioneers in the Cattle Market, Hereford, by presenting in payment two cheques drawn on the Imperial Bank, Westminster Branch, London, which he signed ' Alfred Henry Walker,' but had no account at the bank; the cheques were froai a cheque- book taken out of a portmanteau stolen on the railway between Bristol and London iu March last; the cattle were forwarded from Hereford to Islington Market, consigned ' Biswick to Bond,' sold on the 6th instant, and a cheque given by Mr. Bond to Biswick, payable at Bacon and Cobbold's Bank, Ipswich, which was cashed on the 7th instant, he receiving fourteen £ 10 Notes of Bacon and Cobbold's Bank, Ipswich, Nos. 5070, 5230,5112, 5231, 5503, 5451, 5449, 5172, 5239, 5392, 5338, 5265, 4719, and 5287, which he changed on the 7th instant, at Messrs. Glyn, Mills, and Company's Bank, Lombard- street, City, for £ 10 Bank of England Notes, Nos. 15113 to 15126. He is about 35 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, geutle 4 P O L I C E G A Z E T T E. May 14. manly appearance, dark complexion, heavy dark moustache, centre of chin shaved, dark whiskers and beard ; dressed in a light suit and bowler hat. Information to be given to Head Constable Davies, city of Hereford.— Bow- street, Matj 19. Stolen from a field on the night of the 13th instant, the property of John Hogg, at Lazenby, near Redcar, Land Agent: a dark brown horse Pony, in good condition, 10 or 11 years old, about 13 hands high, square- cut tail, and a patch of Hair worn olf the top of the back by the saddle. Also, on the same night, out of a field at Yearsley, near Redcar, the property of John Proud, Farmer : a dark grey horse Pony, 3 years old, 13t hands high, white star on forehead, and short square cut " tail. Supposed to have been taken to some of the fairs now being held. Information to be given to Superintendent Prest, North Hiding Constabulary, Guis- brough, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, May 15. Obtained o^ the 6th instant, by fraud : two small red short- horn Cows. By a youth, 18 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, fair complexion, brown hair ; dressed in grey overcoat, cord trousers, and brown cloth cap.— Metropolitan Police, K Division, May 15. Description of GEORGE HADLEY, a bailee, charged with Horse stealing : 5 feet 5i inches high, 26 years of age, brown hair, sallow complexion, marked slightly with small- pox, and has a mark under the chin from the kick of a horse ; dressed when last seen in a brown mixture jacket, dark plaid vest, woollen cord breeches, brown leggings, and lace- up boots ; he is a native Alvechurch, Worcestershire, and has friends in Redditch and Wolverhampton ; was second whip with the Worcestershire hounds, and was formerly with the South Berkshire hounds. Information to be given to Super- intendent Haigh, Police Office, Kiddersminster, Worcester- shire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, May 15. Stolen from a field at Wing, during the night of the 9th inst.: one ewe Sheep, black face and legs, one half- bred Ewe, one long- woolled Ewe, and seven Lambs, in store condition : by a young man, dressed in dark clothes, and of respectable appearance, who was seen, on the morning of the 10th inst., driving the stolen sheep at 5 a. m., aud he is supposed to have disposed of them at some fair or market in the neighbour- hood. ELSEY, supposed of Beverley, Yorkshire, charged with converting to his own use a Pony and Cart, of which he was the bailee, the property of Mr. John Cheek, of Little Dunmow : he is about 55 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, grey hair, grey bushy whiskers, dark com- plexion ; generally dressed in dark grey clothes ; has travelled the country for many years as an improver of corn dressing machines. Information to be given to Superintendent Elsey, Police Station, Great Dunmow, Essex, who nolds a warrant for his apprehension.— Boio- street, May 14. Stolen from a field at Oaken Gates, Salop, between the 10th and 12th instant: a dark bay mare Pony, aged, about 14 hands high, white star on forehead, and supposed to be in foal, the property of Mr. John Peplon. Stolen on the 13th instant from Limes Grove, Lewisham : a silver lever Watch, maker ' Bennett, Cheapside, London' ; one gold Locket, onyx stone; one pair gold Ear- rings, car- buncle stone; one ditto ditto Ear- rings and Brooch, tiger's claw, set in gold ; one fish Slice and Fork ; one soup L idle; two Salt Cellars; six Tea Spoons ; twelve Forks, six large and six small, bead pattern, all plated ; one lady's Travelling Bag, with Fittings ; four Dresses— one dark blue silk, one light green ditto, one brown ditto, and one grey woollen ; one dark grey waterproof Cloak ; one pale blue satin Petticoat; two lady's brown silk Umbrellas ; a sealskin Jacket, trimmed • with light fur ; one black velvet Ditto; two new Night- Dresses, ' Elliott' in ink; and various articles of Under Linen ; a cardboard Box, containing pieces of Point Lace and Pearl Necklet; one rough dark cloth Overcoat, lining burnt inside ; a black cloth Coat and Vest ; a pair of light cloth Trousers ; and a hard felt Hat. By a woman, 26 years of age, short and stout, pale complexion, and dark brown hair and eyes; dressed in a dark waterproof cloak, black straw hat and feather, and supposed in company with her husband, 23 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fair complexion, and light curly hair.— Metropolitan Police, R Division, May 21. Absconded from Thrapston, on the night of the 16th ins., charged with stealing from the dwelling- house of John Brown, his master : one wash- leather Purse, containing three £ 5 Notes of Eland and Eland's Bank, Thrapston, £ 3 10s. in Gold, and about 30s. in Silver, among the latter a 5s. Piece of 1670 or 1760 : CHARLES W. LOCKTON, a journey- man baker, 19 year3 of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, fair complexion, mole on left cheek, sandy hair, aud blue eyes; dressed in a light grey suit, black felt or billy hat, and lace- up boots. It is supposed that he will try to emigrate to America, or enlist. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Noble, Oundle, or to Inspector Kitchen, Thrapston, Northamptonshire.— Bow- street, May 21. Description of RICHARD HARRISON, alias TINY HARRISON, who is charged with stealing Is. 6d. from a till in April last, at Tunbridge Wells, aud also with neglecting to report himself, he being under police supervision : 21 years of age, 4 feet inches high, light brown hair, and mole on right breast; has been a fly driver; he was sentenced to 12 months hard labour for burglary in Dec. 1873, after a pre- vious conviction. Information to be given to Chj^ f Super- intendent Embery, Town Hall, Tunbridge Wells, Kent.— — Bow- street, May 21. A warrant has been issued at Tunbridge Wells for the apprehension of DAVID GEORGE CAPLING, on a charge of stealing a leather Case from the Swan Hotel door, on the 24th ultimo, and there are also six other charges of felony against him : he is about 29 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark complexion, dark brown hair, whiskers, and moustache; dressed in light worsted cord trousers with brown stripe down the side, black and white plaid shirt, aud leather strap round the waist; he is a labourer and hawker, exceedingly active, a fast runner, and is supposed to have ' double calves' to one of his legs, aad ' double ankles' to the other. Information to be given to the Chief Superintendent of Police, Tunbridge Wells, Kent,— Bow- street, May 21. Stolen from a public- house yard at Stowupland, on the 14th instant; an Umbrella and a black Hat. By a man, about 22 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, dark hair, cut short, front teeth a little decayed, and squints with one eye ; dressed in white slop, light canvas hat, and dark trousers. Information to be g: ven at the Police Station, Stowmarket, Suffolk,— Bow- street, May 19. Stolen from an hotel in Coventry, on the 8th instant: a superfine blue cloth frock Coat, plain collar and sleeves, pocket inside left breast, pockets inside skirt behind, and lined throughout with black alpaca. By GEORGE GORDON, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, sallow complexion, dark hair, whiskers, and moustache, chin shaved, whiskers and hair turning grey; dressed in black frock coat, black trousers, and high hat, with band about 2 inches deep, or he inny be wearing the stolen coat. Information to be given to Chief Constable Norris, Coventry, Warwickshire.— Bow- street, May 19. Stolen from a house at Fenton, between the 10th and 12th instant: a blue pilot Jacket ( since recovered) and a pair of black cloth Trousers. By a man, who lodged there for a few nights, and has absconded, about 23 years of age, about 5 feet 10 inches high, dark complexion and hair, small dark whiskers and moustache, and a dark blue coloured scar on right side of face ; dressed in a brown cloth jacket, black and white plaid vest, fustiaa trousers, black cloth cap, and wore a strong pair of clogs. He worked as a brickmaker, and is supposed to be a native of Nottingham. Information to be given to Inspector Hale, Police Office, Fenton, Stafford- shire.— Bow- street, May 19. Stolen on the 17th instant, from the George Hotel, Lichfield : a gold horseshoe Pin ; a long blue pilot cloth Coat, with velvet collar, silk lining and facings ; and a black cloth frock Coat, lined throughout with silk, and silk facings; ' Capt.
