Stolen from the person on Newmarket race course, on the lst instant: A gold lever Watch, No. 10218, maker ' G. and W. E. Ethrige, Norwich. Also a plain gold hunting Watch, with crest on back— lion and eagle, maker Lufinan, Bloomsbury, London. Stolen from the persoD, on the Henley Racecourse, on the 28th ultimo : a gold hunting Watch, names on dial ' Upjohn and Brighta silver open- face Watch, size No. 12, plain, hollow back, and steel balance, No. 41953 ; also a gold horseshoe Scarfpin, set with pearls and blue enamel. Stolen by means of housebreaking at Aldershot, between 2 and 5 p. m. on the 10th instaut, the property of Mr. Thomas White: 1 silver Soup Ladle, plain, old, marked 1W.' in old Eng- lish. 20 silver Tea Spoons, plain, old, eleven marked ' T. A. W. in monogram, nine ' W.' in old English. 2 silver Pickle Forks, mother- o'- pearl handles. 1 silver Butter Knife, mother- o'- pearl handle. 5 plain old silver Spoons, two Salt (' T. A. W.' in mono- gram), two Table ( one ' H.'), ( the other ' W.' in old English, aud one Gravy (' W.' in old English). 3 silver shut- up Fruit Knives, mother- o'- pearl handles. 16 electro- plated Forks, marked ' W.' in old English, eight dinner, and eight dessert. 1 lady's moroeco hand Bag, much worn, containing about £ 4 in Gold. 1 gold Set, Brooch and Ear- rings, oblong, white shell. 3 gold Lockets, one horse- pattern, one set in pearls, the other, containing portraits of a Lady and Gentleman. 1 pair of gold Ear- rings, Grecian vase pattern. 1 plain gold buckle Bracelet, weighing about oz. 3 plain gold Pencil- cases. • 1 gold Brooch, set in light garnets and pearls, with Ring to match. 1 pair of jet Bracelets, with carved flower Medallion and jet Chain. 1 gold engine- turned Geneva Watch, cleaned by Steward, 406, Strands, Lor don, about twelve months ago. 1 gold curb Albert Chain, with snake- head Hook. 1 lady's gold Watch, engine- turned,, with book- shaped shield. 2 gold Rings, one with green and white atones, the other had a red stone. A leather Purse, containing about £ 2 5s. Information to be given to Superintendent Stephenson, County Police Station, Aldershot, Hants.— Bow- st., May 12. Stolen from Crocker Hill, near Chichester, on tlie night of the 3rd instant, by means of housebreaking : six or eight Medals, paving the name ' Captain Luce, E. N.,' on them ; a Tablecover, red and white ; and a blaek cloth Overcoat, with velvet collar. Information, to be given to Superintendent Pratt, West Sussex Constabulary, Chichester.— Bow- street, May 10. Further information respecting the three men, charged with housebreaking at Knipton, as advertised in the Police Gazette of the 26th ultimo : GEORGE SHAW and HENRY ANDERTON, alias SWIFT, alias DRUMMER, are committed for trial at the next Leicester General Quarter Sessions, charged with the above offences. The other man, JOHN ROBERTS, is still at large. Information to be given to Inspector Hinds, Constabulary Station, Bottesford, near Nottingham, Leicester, who holds two warrants for his apprehension.— Bow- street, May 10. marked with the letters ' W. L.,' which have become very faint. .£ 10 reward will be paid on the conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of file sheep ( if stolen). Stolen from a stable at Green- street Green, near Bromley, Kent, during the night of the * 6th instant : a dark brown cart Mare, 5 years old, 15 hands 2 inches high, star in fore- head, near fore foot white ; a light spring Yan, painted brown, the tire of near fore wheel is split and hangs over, cap of one hind wheel off, ' W. T. Waring, Chelsfield, Kent,' scratched © n off side ; and an old set of Harness. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent O'Kill, Police Court, Sevenoaks, Kent - Bow- street, May 10. Stolen during the night of the 6th instant, from a field adjoining the River Thames, in the parish of Stone, near Greenhithe, Kent: a Dorset Sheep with horns, not shorn, several pitch marks on back, and was killed and taken away in a boat. Information to be given to Superintendent Fread, Kent Constabulary, Dartford.— Bow- street, May 10. Absconded from Thornbury, Herefordshire, on the 22nd ultimo, charged on a warrant with stealing -, even Sheep, at Burford, Salop : he gave the name of T_ TT [ AS DAVIS, 40 years of age, 5 f « et 5 or 6 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair and whiskers, and rather t, tout built; dressed in a white cotton jacket, dirty cotton cord trousers, brown vest, black billycock hat, old lace- up boots, cut down the fronts. He stated that he was a native of Worcester, and had been in the Marines ; he had over .£ 5, the proceeds of the sale of the sheep, and may buy fresh clothing. Had a letter in his possession addressed to Green Cottage, Great Malvern Chase, Worcestershire, has worked in Wolverhampton driving a scavenger cart. Information to be given to Super- intendent Ivins, Bridgnorth, or to Sergeant Collis, Cleobury Mortimer, Salop.— Bystreet, May 10. Stolen from a field at Rotherham, during the night of the 4tli instant : a dark bay horse Pony, 14 hands high, 6 years ol( l, dark eyes, short ears, and has had the right shoulder broken. Information to be given to Superintendent Gillett, West Riding Constabulary, Court House, Rotherham, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, May 7. Stolen during the night o£ the 30th ultimo, from a stable in Wincott- street, Kennington- road, a heavy cart bay Mare, age C, 17 hands high, hind feet and star on forehead white, slight splinter on near fore leg, and in good condition.— — Metropolitan Poice, L Divisilon, May 5. Between 11 p. m. on the ' Jth and G a. m. on the 8tli inst.' the residence of Octavius Shepherd, Green- end House, Box- moor, was broken aud entered, and the following property of the Rev. G. B. Rhind stolen therein : a dozen silver Tea Spoons, a silver Sugar Spoon, a pair of silver Sugar Tongs, a silver Tea Caddy Spoon, two silver Sugar Sifters, two silver Fruit Spoen?, an electro- plated Soup Ladle, a Gravy Ladle, six Table Spoons, two Sauce Ladles, a dozen Dessert Spoons, a dozen large Forks, a dozen small Forks, a pair of Asparagus Tongs, a Crumb Trowel, a Toast Rack, a Fish Slice and Fork, a filigree Sugar Basin, and two Candlesticks, all marked ' It.' in old English and 1 Elkinton.' Information to be given to Superintendent Isgate, Hemel Hampstead, Herts.— Bow- st., May 10. Between 11 p. m. on the lst, and 5' 30 a. m. on the 2nd instant, an entrance was effected into the house of Mrs. McKean, a widow, at Redcar, by means of breaking a square of glass in the front dining- room window, and unfastening the latch, there was stolen from the dining- room table, the Stalk of a Flower Yase, silver plated, the bottom being left standing on the table, the stalk stood on three feet, resembling dogs feet, from which three branches extended about 18 iuches high, ou top of each was a small glass dish to hold flowers, and one a little higher up on the top of the stalk, to hold a larger glass dish, also to hold flowers, the glass dishes were all found broken close to the window, inside. Information to be given to Superintendent Prest, Guisborough, or to Acting Sergeant Alexander, Police Station, Redcar, North Riding of Yorkshire Constabulary.— Bow- street, May 5. Stolen by means of housebreaking at Caterham, Surrey, between 3' 30 and 4 p. m. on the 3rd instant : three ladies gold Rings, one with large oval turquoise and a diamond on each side, and fo. nr red roses round the edge ; another a garnet and chrysolite, two chrysolites and three garnets, but one garnet deficient; and the other a wedding ring, altered to a dress ring, with five turquoise and a small pearl in centre, and ' eaves forming a forget- me- not. » Information to be given to Superintendent Murtell, Surrey Constabulary, Godstone. — Bow- street, May 5, HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Supposed to have been stolen, from a field at Tibberton, Salop, on the night of the 24th ultimo ; four yearling Sheep, LARCENY AMD EMBSZZLEMEIT. Description of two men charged, on a warrant, with stealing 120 Pigeons, during the night of the 13th ultimo, at Ecclesfield, in the West Riding of Yorkshire, which have since been recovered : JAMES CROSSLAND, labourer, of Ireland- street, Not- tingham, 29 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark com- plexion, small dark eyes, which are very tender, dark hair, no whiskers or moustache, but sometimes wears a heavy moustache ; dressed when last seen in Sheffield in long dark coat and vest, cord trouser.-, and rough cap. GEORGE BYROM, brirklayer, belongs to Nottingham, about 28 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, dark com- plexion and hair ; mostly dressed as a mason. They are notorious pigeon stealers and poachers, and frequent Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, and Yorkshire. Information to be given to Superintendent Kershaw, West Riding Constabulary, Sheffield.— Bow- street, May 12. Absconded on the 3rd instant, from Chasetown, stealing £ 6 10s. 2| d. from the dwelling- house of James Motteram, with whom he lodged : a youth who gave the name of ALFRED PALMER, alias STEADMAN, 17 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, pale face, brown hair, stammers, and is a labourer at coal pits; dressed in old worsted cap with peak, black velvet jacket, dark brown cloth vest and trousers, and new lace- up boots ; he was formerly a shoeblack at Walsall, and absconded from Fishponds, near Bristol, on the 8th ultimo, having stolen a watch. Information ta be given to Superintendent Hill, Brownhil's Station, near Walsall, Staffordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehen- sion.— Bow- sireet, May 10. Absconded on the 16tli ultimo, charged on a warrant with stealing £ 5, the monies of his employers Messrs. Richards and Co., clock importers, 24, Cannon- street : FREDERICK W. WARD, about 24 years of age, 5 ft. 4 ins. high, light brown liair, cut short, small moustache, no whiskers, turn- up nose, large nostrils, large grey eyes, sallow complexion, high forehead, and slender make ; respectably dressed ; wears a silver watch and silver chain attached ; ia a clerk, and a native of Leicester. £ 5 reward will be paid for his apprehension. Information to be given to Inspector Bailey, City of London Police, Detective Department, 26, Old Jewry," E. C. — Bow- street, May 10. Description of THOMAS STAINSBY, a travelling watch maker, who failed to surrender himself at Durham Quarter Sessions on the 4th instant, to answer an indictment found against him for larceny as a bailee; 38 years of age, 5 feet 5f inches high, fresh complexion, hazel eyes, rather full, brown hair, light whiskers all round the face, and pro- portionate figure ; he lately resided at Middlesbrough, from w 2 POLIO E G A Z E T T E. Jl/ ay 12 • which place he absconded about the 2nd ultimo ; and travels about the country cleaning and repairing clocks and watches; he is well known throughout the county of Durham. Information to be given to Superintendent Thubron, Durham County Constabulary, Stanhope, who holds a war- rant for his apprehension,— Bow- street, May 7. Stolen on the 30th ultimo, from Fulham- road : 80 yards of black Silk, with white and violet edge ; and 30 ditto ditto, with orange and violet ege. By two men : lst, 31 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, sallow complexion, and dark brown hair and whiskers ( short); dressed in a d->. rk suit aud felt hat; 2nd, 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, and fair hair and complexion ; and a woman, 25 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, and dark hair atld complexion ; dressed in dark clothes, and of respectable appearance.— Metropolitan Police B Divi- sion, May 5. Stolen on the 30th ultimo, from a blacksmith's shop at Culgaith, near Penrith : two pairs of steel Callipers, sizes 6 inches and 4J- inches. By a tramping blacksmith, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, bald head, and slender figure ; dressed in black coat and trousers, the latter torn in the seat, blue striped shirt, and blue cloth cheesecutter cap, with a brass button on each side. He is of drunken habits, and makes a practice of tracing puzzles and figures on the floors and walls in public- houses. Information to be given to Superintendent Fowler, Penrith, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle, Cumberland.— Bow- street, May 5. Dr. NORMANDIE, alias SHOTLANDER, advertised in the Police Gazette of tne 26th ultimo, was apprehended at Clifton, and is committed for three months hard labour in Shrewsbury Gaol. Supposed to have committed offences elsewhere.) He is about 30 years of age ( not ' 40' as adver- tised. Information to be given to Head Constable Cole, Borough Police Office, Bridgenorth, Salop.— Bov.- si.. May 5. Absconded on the 26th ultimo, from bail, charged with embezzlement: THOMAS DANVERS, 45 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh complexion, grey hair and whiskers, sharp nose, slight impediment in speech, turns his feet out in walking ; dressed in dark clothes, Warrant issued.— Metro- politan Police, R Division, May 3, Stolen from the dwelling house of Mrs. Marriott, of Stubbers Green, between 2 and 6 a. m. on the 30tli ultimo : a black cloth Overcoat, pockets in each side and one in left breast; a Suit of black cloth ; a Suit of plaided cloth, trousers and vest darker than jacket; a pair of elastic- side Boots, buttons down front; two Shirts, one white, the other white with red spots; two Neckties, one black and red, the other black and white ; and a silver Geneva Watch, glass cracked, and imitation gold Albert Chain, snake pattern. By a man, 25 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, slender build, dark brown hair, small moustache, no whiskers, large features, his right hand has recently gathered and is not yet well, and he is a native of Stratford- on- Avon ; dressed in the stolen suit of black and boots, and blue cloth cap with peak. Informa- tion to be given to Sergeant Arnold, Police Station, Rushall, near Walsall, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, May 3. Stolen from a joiner's workshop at Tranmere, during the night of the 26th ultimo : a new screw Plough Plane : two Plough Planes, marked ' S. Morris ;' a Tenon Saw, marked ' A. Simpson ;' a ditto, marked ' Foulkes ;' a ditto, marked ' McKenzie a set Mitre, marked ' Simpson ;' a Mortice Gauge, marked ' Foulkes a ditto, marked ' Simpson;' a Brace and Bits, marked ' A. Bell;' three Planes ( one hand rail) a Dovetail Saw, and a Plough Bit, marked ' Bell;' a Wood Brace, marked ' McKenzie ;' a Tenon Square, marked ' McKenzie Lamb Tongue Square ; a Bass, half lined ; an inch Chisel; a quantity of Plough Bits ; a number of Brace Bits ; and two Match Planes. Description of a man who pledged some of the stolen Articles in Liverpool the following morning : about 35 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, sandy complexion, sandy whiskers under chin, full face, stout built, and has the appearance of a joiner; dressed iu dark shooting coat and billycock hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Egerton, County Police Office, Birkenhead, Cheshire.— Bow- street, May 3. FRAUDS AND AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS. Description of a man named EDWARD R. DAY, alias MELLISH, charged on a warrant with obtaining by false pretences Goods of the value of £ 30: he is a native of Grimsby, 30 to 35 years of age, about 5 feet 9 inches high, stoutly built, fresh complexion, brown hair, cut short, slight moustache, no whiskers, full face, aud scar under left eye; dressed in light cord trousers, tight fitting, dark brown framework knitted worsted vest, with sleeves, and light coloured billycock hat. Information to be given to Chief Constable Poyntz, Borough Police Station, Nottingham,— Bow- street, May 12. Absconded from Northampton on the 22ud ultimo, charged, under the Fraudulent Debtors Act, with obtaining large quantities of goods by fraud : WILLIAM THOMAS, about 32 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, dark brown hair, sandy whiskers and moustache, whiskers rather long at sides, slight build, very clean, and good- looking ; dressed when last seen in a black silk hat, black frock coat, and dark trousers, has three plain gold studs in front of shirt, and wears a heavy linked gold albert chain. And WILLIAM JAMES THOMAS, about 38 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, dark brown hair, light brown whiskers and moustache, stout build, good looking, and of good address; dressed when last seen in a black felt flat- crowned billycock hat and a suit of green mixture cloth clothes. They have only resided in Northampton for a short time, and the names are supposed to be fictitious. £ 10 reward will be paid to any person apprehending the said William Thomas aud William James Thomas, or £ 5 for either of them. Infor- mation to be given to Chief Constable Keenan, Northampton. — Bow- street, May 10. MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATIONS. Left his home, Mary Arches- street, in the city of Exeter, on the 4th instant: JOHN STEERS, of unsound mind, 28 years of age ( looks older), about 5 feet 7 inches high, light complexion, brown hair, whiskers, and moustache, and blue eyes ; dressed in dark clothes and shabby boots. It is feared that some ill has befallen him. Information to be given to Chief Constable Bent, Guildhall, Exeter, Devon— Bow- street, May 12. Description of the Body of a man found drowned in the River Tees, at South Stockton, on the 6th instaut : about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches long, fresh complexion, light hair and moustache, and a tuft of hair on chin ; dressed in grey tweed coat and vest, dark corduroy trousers, light neckerchief, and elastic- side boots. A portion of a letter, signed Eliza Britter or Britton was found on the body. At the coroner's inquest a verdict of ' Found Drowned' was returned. The body is supposed to have been in the water only a few hours. Information to be given to Superintendent Simpson, North Riding Constabulary, South Stockton.— Bow- street, May 12. Committed to Ipswich County Gaol on the 11th instant, for 3 calendar months under the Vagrant Act : a man who gives the name of DAVID URQUAHART ( supposed to be false), and states that he came from Dundee ; he is 23 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, freckled face, no whiskers, brown hair, dark blue eyes, small scar on back of neck, and two small scars on right elbow ; dressed in an old monkey jacket and dark trousers, and low lace- up shoes. Iuformation to be given to Sergeant Reeve, Police Station, Needham Market, Suffolk. — Bow- street, May 12. Left his service at Tilly Park House, Wem, on the 24th ultimo, and^ has not since been heard of: RICHARD MILLINGTON, 17 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, burn mailk on each cheek, also on each wrist, cut mark on left thumb, light hair, and grey eyes ; dressed in brown tweed jacket, and low crown hat. It is feared some ill has befallen him. Information to be given to Superintendent Caswell, Police Office, Shrewsbury.— Bow- street, May 12. Description of a tramp who gives the name of WM.
