C. * t* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge ia made for the insertion of any article in tho POLICE GAZETTE, all betters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. NOTICE. March 2' Jt/ i being a Bank Holiday, the Police Gazette" will be published on Saturday, March 27th. INFORMATIONS. MURDEK AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. On the 27th ultimo, the Body of a Woman unknown was found iu the river . Avon, near the locks at Saltford, with a contused ragged wound ou the forehead, and another wound across the bridge of the nose, and the coroner's jury have returned a verdict of ' Wilful murder' against some person or . persons unknown. Description of the body : about 24 years of age, 4 feet 10 or 11 inches long, stoutly built, black curly hair, good and regular teeth ; dressed in a violet linsey dress body, black pannier, black print skirt with white spots, light brown or faded violet skirt, brown stays, very ragged chemise, white stockings, elastic- side boots, black crape bonnet, trimmed with black satin, violet ribbon, rose, aud black vulcaui'. e brooch, wore a piece of brown horse cloth with red cross bars as an apron ; all the clothing was very much worn aud staiued with grease, pitch, and tar, the piece of horse cloth especially ; the body appeared to have been in the water from ten days to a fortnight. A reward of £ 1C0 will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person who will give such in- formation and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murder er or murderers, and Mr. Secretary Cross will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice, not being the person who actually com- mitted the murder, who will give such information as will lead to the like result. Information to be given to the Chief Constable of the county of Somerset, Glastonbury, or to Superintendent Emson. Police Statiou, Temple Cloud, j near Bristol.— Bow- st< eet, March 19. * Charged with attempting to murder Maria Burring, at Chatham, ou the 9th iustaut: a man, about 33 years of age, H feet 8 or 9 inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, very few whiskers under chin, full face, stout build, limps slightly with oue leg, scar on one side of neck from abscess, and © ne peculiar- looking eye; dressed in dirty white slop, pockets at sides, mended with different material on one sleeve, dark striped tweed trousers, red and black plaid scarf, billycock hat, aud heavy lace- up shoes; he is likely to frequent low lodging- houses and beershopa. Information to be given to Superintendent Coppinger, Kent Constabulary, Chatham.— Bow- met t, March 19. On the morning of the 9th instant, the dead body of a castle, said she was residing in the neighbourhood, and alleged that her son was in some difficulty at Darlington, and required £ 2 next morning, but being too late to get a post offic » order, requested the gentleman to accommodate her with a cheque for that amount, which he di- J, she giving him two sovereigns, and stating that she had been twice married ; she appeared to be about 45 years of age, medium height, dark hair, sharp features; plainly dressed in black, w ith black bonnet and shawl, and spoke with a southern accent. The following day, about 12- 50 p. m., the cheque was presented at the National Provincial Bank, Newcastle on- Tyne, neatly altered from £ 2 to £ 200, and notes to that amount obtained, by a man about 35 years of age, 5 feet 4 to 6 inches high, very light or red hair, fresh coloured ; dressed in black over- coat, silk hat, and wore gloves stitched on the back of hands with white ; this man shortly afterwards tendered one of the £ 5 notes at the post office. Description of the notes obtained : two £ 50 Bank of England Notes, dated 19th Jan., 1874, Manchester, Nos. 19473 and 25458; one ditto, 25th July, 1873, Newcastle- upon- Tyne, No. 94741 ; one £ 5 ditto, 27th July, 1874, Newcastle- upon- Tyne, No. 67069 ; one ditto, same date and place, No. 67070, since traced to man described ; one ditto, 1st August, 1872, Newcastle- upon- Tyne, No. 48733, since traced to man described; five ditto, 27th July, 1874, Newcastle- upon- Tyne, Nos. 01501, 15C88, G8359, 51369, and 60290 ; and two ditto, 1st August, 1874, Newcastle- upon- Tyne, Nos. 89995 and 47036. Stolen on the night of the 20th instant, from the person ' of Charles Stackhouse, at West Bromwich : a silver lever Watch, with silver dial and seconds hands, maker Fisher, West Bromwich, No. 9077, gold albert Chain attached, with topaz stone. £ 1 reward will be paid on the apprehension of the offender or offenders and recovery of the property. Stolen from the person at Burbage, on the 12th instant : a lady's small size double bottom consular gold Geneva Watch, No. 54780, with gold figures, a long gold guard Chain with very small links, trace pattern, attached. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Stretton, Wilts Con- stabulary, Marlborough.— Bow- street, March 19. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Between 9 p. m. on the 18th and 7 30 a. m. on the 19th instant, the offices attached to five railway stations, on the Birkenhead and Chester joint line, were broken and entered, and money amounting to about £ 17, iu Gold, Silver, and Copper; 2s. worth of Postage Stamps; two Parcels, containing two dress Pieces ; a pair of man's Hose ; some scarlet Wool ; and Brussels Net, 22 inches, were stolen therein. Entrance at each station was effected by breaking a pane of glass over the catch of the office window, and the several tills were forced open with a f- inclr chisel or jemmy. Information to be given to Superintendent Egerton, County Police Station, Abbey- street, Birkenhead.— Bow- st., March 22. Between 12 and 5 p. m. on the 18th instant, the dwelling- j house of Charles Doubell, of Lingfield, was broken aud eutered, and stolen therein ( supposed by a tramp) : a pair of ' silver Salt Spoons, with initials ' C. D.;' a pair of Scales, with silk cords and weights for a guinea and half- guinea ; a brass Balance for weighing a sovereign or half- sovereign ; and a silk Handkerchief with yellow ground and white | spots ; a pair of plated Candlesticks. Stolen on the 11th inst., from Lewis Grove, Lewisham : a light spring Cart, Pony, and Harness; cart painted chocolate, picked out red, Bcrew axle, containing two Sacks, marked ' H. P. E.' in a circle with biack paint ; pony, dark mane and tail, 13 hands high, aged, very fat, rests off fore leg when standing by placing it to the front; harness brass- mounted. By three men, about 23 years of age, and dressed in dark clothes.— Metropolitan Police, B Division, March 17. Stolen during the night of the 12th instant, from a field in Wordsworth- road, South Hornsey : a black riding Filly, rising 3 years, 13J hands high, star on forehead, three white feet, no shoes, loEg mane and tail, in good condition.— Metro- politan Police, N Division, March 17. Description of a man giving the name of JOHN MARTIN, real name supposed to be CROSS, charged with stealing a Colt and Pony, the property of Mr. Porch, Bed- minster, on the night of the 11th instant, and which he endeavoured to dispose of at Wells on the 13th instant; he is about 25 years of age, about 5 feet high, very slightly built, rather fresh complexion, dark hair, small moustache, and little whiskers on chin, but may be shaved off, under jaw projects a little from the upper one, small teeth very much discoloured ; dressed in long dark overcoat much worn, dark cord trousers, black stiff bowler hat, and dark mixture necktie with pin. He has been seen travelling through the country selling flash jewellery, and repairing watches. £ 2 reward will bs paid by Mr. Porch to any person who shall give such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the accused. Description of CHARLES PITMAN, charged with obtaining a Horse, value £ 26 5s., by false pretences at Reading on the 1st ultimo : about 31 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, proportionate build, fresh complexion, dark hair, eyes, whiskers, aud moustache ; respectably dressed, but of horsey appearance. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Purchase, Borough Police Station, Reading, Berks, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bvw- street, March 17. Found at Boylestone, on the 18th ultimo, supposed stolen: two roan barren Twinters, 2 year olds, were numbered respectively ' 4 and 9,' as if they had been sold at an auction sale. Information to be given to Superintendent Whieldon, Ashbourne, Derby, or to lnspoctor Taylor, Church Broughton, Derbyshire. - Bow- street, March 17. Stolen between 8 and 9 p. m. on the 15th instant, from a stable at Gresley, the property of Richard Mee : a dark brown mare Pony, 14 hands high, 4 years old, has a small patch of white hair on the front of right hind foot, small wart on right eyelid, aud has been clipped ; the pony had on a sack, cut open and lined with green, for a rug, and a new hempen halter. There was left behind in the stable a hempen Halter, abort half worn and rather greasy about the middle. Information to be given to Superintendent Sharpe, Police Station, Woodville, near Burton- oa- Trent. — Bow- street, March 17. Charged on a warrant with stealing a 2- year old Heifer from Ruiston, on the night of the 2ud instant, which he sold at Bridgewater Market cn the 3rd : a man, from 35 to 40 years of age, about 5 feet 11 inches high, brown hair, small whiskers inclined to be sandy, dark complexion, and inclined to stoop ; dressed in a black hard bowler hat, long brown cloth coat and vest, dark trousers with fly front, and heavy nailed lace- up boots ; he gave the name of JOHN COOPER, of Yatton- road, Weston- super- Mare. Information to be given to Superintendent Goldsmith, Taunton, Somerset- shire.— Bow- street, March 17. Midsomer Norton. Information to be given to Head Constable Campbell, Grimsby, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, March 22. 10th January last. The mother left the workhouse ou the 28th ultimo, aud said that she was goiug to Glastonbury, but was seen to go in the direction of Midsomer Norton : she gave tho name of ANN YATES, said that she belonged to Manchester, but she is supposed to be a native of Devonshire, is 24 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fresh complexion, fair hair, blue or grey eyes, sharp thin nose, and good- locking; dressed in a brown Batiu dress trimmed with blue braid, black cloth jacket, aud black straw hat with a rose oil it. Charged with embezzlement at Sheffield: JOHN WARTLEY, a butcher, native of Swiuton, Yorkshire, last resided at Sheffield, 21 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, lather dark complexion, dark brown hair, scar amongst the hair at the back of head, rather rough voice, and strong build ; supposed to be accompanied by a ballet girl, who was engaged at the Alexandra Theatre, Sheffield, during the last pantomime. Information to be given at the Central Police Oilice, Sheffield. - Bow- street, March 25. Stolen from the house of Henry Cross, labourer, Oswestrv, on the 1st ultimo : a Coat aud Vest, recovered. By DAVID MORRIS, labourer, of Oswestry, 28 yeais age, 5 feet 5 iuclies high, swarthy complexion, brown hat griyeyes, long visage; dressed in white slop, cotton cord trousers, moleskin vest, black necktie, billycock hat, and strong lace- up boots; he is most likely working at a farm- house. Information to be given to Superintendent Gough, Oswestry, Salop, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Boio- strect, March 24. Description of JOHN W. YABSLEY, late manager to an upholsterer, who abscoiukd from Portsmouth, on the P O L I C E G A Z E T T E. March 25 19th instant, charged with ' embezzlement: he is about 32 years of age, 5 feet 16 or 11 inches high, light hair, • whiskers, and moustache, fair complexion; dressed iu long blue overcoat, and a suit of black clothes underneath, of gentlemanly appearance, aud fond of company. Information to be given to Head Constable Barber, Portsmouth, who holds a warrant for his appiehension,— Bow- street, March 21. Absconded from Salford, in the county of Warwick, on the- 12th inst., charged with stealing a Concertina : FRANK BRADSHAW, a native of Bidford, about 19 years of age, 6 feet 6 or G inches high, stoutly made, fresh complexion, light brown hair, browu eyes ; dressed iu a dark grey coat, light grey trousers with a dark stripe down the sides, and dark billycock hat. Information to be giveu to Superinten- dent Dunbar, Alcester, Warwickshire, who holds a warrant ior his apprehension.— Bow- street, .1/ arch 24. Stolen from a bedroom, iu the borough of Birkenhead, on the 19th instant : a gold Geneva Watch, No. 13933, engraved back; also a gold curb albert Chain and gold locket, one side blae enamelled. By a man, about 19 years of age, about 5 feet 1 or 2 inches high, dark complexion, moustache beginning to grow ; dressed in dark coat and vest, cream- coloured trossers, old billycock hat, aud white muffler, with blue spots ; Welsh accent, aud said ho was a plumber. £ 2 reward. Absconded on the 21st instant, from Abergavenny, charged with stealing a gold lever Watch, opeu face, maker W. Cribb, Southampton, No. 1338, the property of Mrs. Morgan, Angel Hotel, Abergavenny ; also a silver Geneva Watch, glass cracked, and a piece chipped off the dial near the figure 8, a common Albert Chain attached, the property of Edwin Spragg, Abergavenny : WILLIAM CASEY, boots, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, slight make, fair complexion, freckled, scar on cheek, supposed below the left eye, sandy hair, little or no whiskers, tattooed ' J. H.' and anchor on on<> arm, and three dots on back of each hand ; dressed in a black coat, rounded at the bottom of skirt, dark double- breasted vest and trousers to match, imitation plaid, aud black felt round fop hat; stated that he had been to sea, and is a native of Bath. Information to be given to Superintendent Freeman, County Constabulary, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, who holds warrants for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 24. Stolen between 12 noon and 3 p. m. on the 17th instant, • from the dwelling- house of Mrs. Astbury, of Pelsall, the property of Peter Cord- ill, a lodger : £ 1 lGs. ( id. in Gold and Silvera silver verge Watch ( since found pawned at Wolverhampton). By a man who gave the name of FREDERICK SHAW, who had been lodging at the house a short time, 35 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, dark complexion, brown ( rather sandy) hair, no whiskers or moustache, has a little hair under the lower lip, dimple in chin, mark of a cut over right eye, anil turns his toes in- wards ; dressed in old blue pilot cloth jacket, much worn and turning brown, black cloth single- bieasted vest, old moleskin trousers, blucher boots, hole worn through the toe of one, check scarf, and cloth cap, with ear Uap3 tied over top with tape. Has a downcast appearance, and states that he has worked in iron works at Moss End and Motherwell, in Scotland, and Hanley, Staffordshire, and is a puddler. Information to be given to Sergeant Arnold, Rushall, or to Police Conslable Ellis, Pelsall, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, March 22. A warrant is issued at Tunbridge Wells for the appre- hension of THOMAS STANFORD, charged with stealing in Jauuary last, the materials of two pairs of Boots : he is 37 year3 of age, 5 feet 7i inches high, very red hair aud whiskers, which are cut short, freckled face, and is a shoe- maker. Information to be given to the Head Constable, Town Hall, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, who holds the warrant. — Bow- street, March 22. Stolen on the 18th instant, from the dwelling- house of Mr. Silvester Brown, at Milton, Weston- super- Mare : a patent lever double- case silver Watch, with ' Silvester Brown, Weston- super- Mare' engraved on the inside of the second case, aud without a ring ; a grey woollen scarf Shawl, with black border, and white aud black fringe at the bottom. By a man who lodged there for the night, aud stated that ho was a foreman employed on the Bristol and Exeter Railway, and should require the lodgings. for 2 months, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, dark hair and whiskers, and stout built ; dressed iu a pilot cloth reeQng jacket, dark cloth vest and trousers, heavy boots, worn at the toe9, and a cheeBecutter cap, with a small piece of yellow braid across the front, and woollen shirt. Information to be given to Superintendent Gillbanks, Somerset Constabulary, Axbridge, or to Sergeant Hardwick, Weston- super- Mare, Somersetshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— liow- street, March 22. Description of JOHN CLARKE, charged with stealing a sack of Oats ( recovered), the property of Henry Harris, at Westcot Barton : 40 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, dark hair and complexion, thin dirk whiskers ; dressed in browu jacket, cord trousers, black cap, and red or grey vest; he is an agricultural labourer, and dirty in appearance. Informa- tion to be given to Inspector Jones, Police Station, Dedding- ton, Oxon, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Beu- siriet, March 22. pimples, blue eyes, very fair hair and moustache, no whiskers, rather sleepy looking, shortish nose, very red, speaks low, walks erect, usually very quickly, aud is of gentlemanly appearance ; generally dressed iu a fashionable grey suit aud blue overcoat. £ 10 reward will be paid for his apprehension. Information to be given to Chief Constable Richardson, South Shields, who holds a warrant.— Bow- street, March 19. Charged by a warrant with stealing £ ICO on the 15 th inst. the monies of employers, the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company, Victoria Station, Manchester : HENRY RILEY BAXTER, a booking clerk, 23 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, rather slender, large light blue eyes, light hair and complexion, very little beard or whiskers, effeminate appearance, small mouth, teeth prominent, one in front broken and black; usually dresses in a light suit. He is supposed to be accompanied by his wife, about the san e age aud height. It is supposed that they will endeavour to leave the country. £ 10 reward will be paid upon his apprehen- sion and recovery of the money, or in proportion to the amount recovered. Information to be given at the Detective Oflice, Cheapside, Manchester.— Bow- street, March 19. Absconded on the 15th instant, from Lichfield, charged ( on a warrant) with embezzling £ 1 12s. : a man who went in the name of WILLIAM WILDY, alias WM. WELDEN, about 50 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, stout build, broad red face, small sandy whiskers, and rather curly hair, turning grey; dressed in fustian jacket, dark eord trousers with patch on one thigh, and soft black billycock hat ; he is a thatcher and gardener, and is supposed to have relatives living at Birmingham, Southampton, and Gloucester. Infor- mation to be given to Chief Superintendent Hernaman, Lichfield, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, March 19. Absconded on the 1st instant, from Kentish Town- road, charged with embezzling £ 14 : EDWARD MAPSTEAD, 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, sallow complexion, brown hair, whiskers, and moustache ; dressed in brown overcoat, dark trousers, and felt hat; a traveller. Warrant issued.- - Metropolitan Police, Y Division, March 17. Absconded since the 6th instant, from Church- road, Battersea, charged with embezzling £ 1 16s. 8d., the monies of his employer : GUSTAVE ROBERT MOELCHARECK, 32 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, sallow complexion, light hair and whiskers ( slight), very stout; dressed ( supposed) iu dark clothes; speaks good English with a German accent, and is a native of Saxony. Warrant issued.— Metropolitan Police, V Division, March 17.
