Rlotlee.— It is requested that all communications l< Jr the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, , may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Streot, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any aiticle in the POLICE GAZETTE, all letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, Bhould be forwarded on War Office Eorms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. INFORMATIONS. Police Office, Staffordshire Constabulary, West Bronrwich. — Bow- street, March 22. Stolen from the person at Burbage, on the 12th instant : a lady's small size double bottom consular gold Geneva Watch, No. 54780, with gold figures, a long gold guard Chain with very small links, trace pattern, attached. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Stretton, Wilts Con- stabulary, Marlborough.— Bow- street, March 19. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING, On the 27th ultimo, the Body of a Woman unknown was found in the river Avon, near the locks at Saltford, with a • contused ragged wound on the forehead, and another wound across the bridge of the nose, and the coroner's jury have returned a verdict of ' Wilful murder' against some person or persons unknown. Description of the body : about 24 years of age, 4 feet 10 or 11 inches long, stoutly built, black curly hair, good and regular teeth ; dressed in a violet linsey dress body, black pannier, black print skirt with white spots, light brown or faded violet skirt, brown stays, very ragged chemise, white stockings, elastic- side boots, black crape bonnet, trimmed with black satin, violet ribbon, rose, and black vulcanite brooch, wore a piece of brown horse cloth with red cross bars as an apron ; all the clothing was very much worn and stained with grease, pitch, and tar, the piece of horse cloth especially ; the body appeared to have been in the water from ten days to a fortnight. A reward of £ 100 will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person who will give such in- formation and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murderer or murderers, and Mr. Secretary Cross will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice, not being the person who actually com- mitted the murder, who will give such information as will lead to the like result. Information to be given to the Chief Constable of the county of Somerset, Glastonbury, or to Superintendent Emson, Police Station, Temple Cloud, near Bristol.— Brno- street, March 19. Charged with attempting to murder Maria Burring, at Chatham, on the 9th instant: a man, about 33 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, very few whiskers under chin, full face, stout build, limps slightly with one leg, scar on one side of neck from abscess, and ene peculiar- looking eye; dressed in dirty white slop, pockets at sides, mended with different material on one sleeve, dark striped tweect trousers, red and black plaid scarf, billycock hat, and heavy lace- up shoes; he is likely to frequent low lodging- houses and beershops. Information to be given to Superintendent Coppinger, Kent Constabulary, Chatham.— Bow- itreet, March 19. On the morning of the 9th instant, the dead body of a female Child, about two months old, was found iu a well at Midsomer Norton. At the coronor's inquest, which is adjourned to the 5th proximo, it was shown that the child was murdered and afterwards thrown into the well. The clothing found on the body has been identified as that worn by a child born iu Shepton- Mallet Union Workhouse on the 10th January last. The mother left the workhouse on the 28th ultimo, and said that she was going to Glastonbury, but was seen to go in the direction of Midsomer Norton : she gave the name of ANN YATES, said that she belonged to Manchester, but she is supposed to be a native of Devonshire, is 24 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fresh complexion, fair hair, blue or grey eyes, sharp thin nose, and good- locking; dressed in a brown satin dress trimmed with blue braid, black cloth jacket, aud black straw hat with a rose on it. She is supposed to be at present in Cardiff, near Bristol, from which place she was sent a post- office order. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Deggan, Frome, Somer- setshire, who holds a warrant for her apprehension.— Bow- , March 19. BUE6LAEY AND HOUSE BREAKING. ' Between 9 p. m. on the 18th and 7' 30 a. m. on the 19th instant, the offices attached to five railway stations, on the Birkenhead and Chester joint line, were broken and entered, and money amounting to about £ 17, iu Gold, Silver, and Copper; 2s. worth of Postage Stamps; two Parcels, containing two dress Pieces ; a pair of man's Hose ,• some scarlet Wool; and Brussels Net, 22 inches, were stolen therein. Entrance at each station was effected by breaking a pane of glass over the catch of the office window, and the several tills were forced open with a f- inch chisel or jemmy. Information to be given to Superintendent Egerton, County Police Station, Abbey- street, Birkenhead.— Bow- st., March 22. Between 12 and 5 p. m. on the 18th instant, the dwelling- house of Charles Doubell, of Lingfield, was broken and entered, and stolen therein ( supposed by a tramp) : a pair of silver Salt Spoons, with initials ' C. D.;' a pair of Scales, with silk cords and weights for a guinea and half- guinea ; a brass Balance for weighing a sovereign or half- sovereign ; and a silk Handkerchief with yellow ground and white spots ; a pair of plated Candlesticks. Information to be given to Superintendent Murtell, Surrey Constabulary, Godstone.— Bow- street, March 22. Stolen, by means of housebreaking, from the shop of Mr. J. Bartle, watchmaker and jeweller, 20, Freeman- street, Great Grimsby, during the night of the 18th instant: nine- teen gold Geneva Watches ; a white dial gold Lever ditto, No. 772 D; a white Dial, name James Bartle, No. 535G ; a gold Watch, No. 37892; nine gold Lever ditto; a gold lever Hunting ditto; thirteen silver Lever ditto ; twenty- five gold Chains and Alberts ; twelve silver Alberts and Guards ; twenty- three ladies' Fancy and Dress Rings ; twenty- six gentlemen's Signet " Rings, bright and coloured gold ; three ditto large coloured Hoops ; forty ladies' gold Hoops, 9 and 18- carat gold ; and sixteen or eighteen gold Wedding Bings. Information to be given to Head Constable Campbell, Grimsby, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, March 22. Description of CHARLES PITMAN, charged with obtaining a Horse, value £ 26 5s., by fiilse pretences at Reading on the 1st ultimo : about 31 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, proportionate build, fresh complexion, dark hair, eyes, whiskers, aud moustache ; respectably dressed, but of horsey appearance. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Purchase, Borough Police Station, Reading, Berks, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 17. Found at Boylestone, on thS 18th ultimo, supposed stolen: two roan barren Twinters, 2 year olds, were numbered respectively ' 4 and 9,' as if they had been sold at an auction sale. Information to be given to Superintendent Whieldon, Ashbourne, Derby, or to Inspector Taylor, Church Broughton, Derbyshire.— Bow- street, March 17. Stolen between 8 and 9 p. m. on the 15th instant, from a stable at Gresley, the property of Richard Mee : a dark brown mare Pony, 14 hands high, 4 years old, has a small patch of white hair on the front of right hind foot, small wart on right eyelid, aud has - been clipped ; the pony had on a sack, cut open and lined with green, for a rug, and a new hempen halter. There was left behind in the stable a hempen Halter, about half worn and rather greasy about the middle. Information to be given to Superintendent Sharpe, Police Station, Woodville, near Burton- on- Trent. — Bow- street, Marali 17. Charged on a warrant with stealing a 2- year old Heifer from Ruiston, on the night of the 2nd instant, which he sold at Bridgewater Market cn the 3rd : a man, from 35 to 40 years of age, about 5 feet 11 inches. high, brown hair,-.... small whiskers inclined to be sandy, dark complexion, andr inclined to stoop ; dressed in a black hard bowler h « t, long brown cloth coat and vest-, dark trousers with fly front, and heavy nailed lace- up boots ; he gjive the name of JOHN COOPER, of Yatton- road. Weston- super- Mare. Information be givwaio Superintendent Goldsmith, Taunton, Somerset- shire.— Bow- street, March 17. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen on the night of the 20th instant, from the person of Charles Stackhouse, at West Bromwich : a silver lever Watch, with silver dial and seconds hands, maker Fisher, West Bromwich, No. 9077, gold albert Chain attached, with topaz stone. £ 1 reward will be paid on the apprehension of the offender or offenders and reoovery of the property. Information to be given to Superintendent Woollaston, HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen during the night of the 16th instant, from Garrett- lane, Streatham : a bay Mare, C years old, 14 hands high, white star on forehead aud white mark on hind leg, in good condition.— Metropolitan Police, Y Division, March 22. Stolen on the night of the 17th instant, from a stable at Low Habberley, near Kidderminster, the property of Fredk. Weaver : a black horse Pony 4 years old, 13£ hands high, in good condition, some white hair on the near foreleg from the knee to the hoof, and the off hind fetlock white. Also stolen an old Saddlo and double- rein Bridle, with Snaffle and Curb Bitts. A reward of £ 5 will be given upon the recovery of the Pony and conviction of the offender or offenders on applica- tion to Mr. Weaver. Information to be given to Superintendent Freeman, Stour- bridge, Worcestershire, or to Sergeant Matthews, Wolverley, near Kidderminster, Worcestershire.-— Bow- street, March 22. Stolen on the lltli inst., from Lewis Grove, Lewisham : a light spring Cart, Pony, and Harness; cart painted chocolate, picked out red, screw axle, containing two Sacks, marked ' H. P. E.' in a circle with black paint ; pony, dark mane and tail, 13 hands high, aged, very fat, rests off fore leg when standing by placing it to the front; harness brass- mounted. By three men, about 23 years of age, and dressed in dark clothes.— Metropolitan Police, R Division, March 17. Stolen during the night of the 12th instant, from a field in Wordsworth- road, South Hornsey : a black riding Filly, rising 3 years, 13| hands high, star on forehead, three white feet, no shoes, long mane and tail, in good condition.— Metro- politan Police, N Division, March 17. Description of a man giving the name of JOHN MARTIN, real name supposed to be CROSS, charged with stealing a Colt and Pony, the property of Mr. Porch, Bed- minster, on the night of the 11th instant, and which he endeavoured to dispose of at Wells on the 13th instant; he is about 25 years of age, about 5 feet high, very slightly built, rather fresh complexion, dark hair, small moustache, and little whiskers on chin, but may be shaved off, under jaw projects a little from the upper one, small teeth very much discoloured ; dressed in long dark overcoat much worn dark cord trousers, black stiff bowler hat, and dark mixture necktie with pin. He has been seen travelling through the country selling flash jewellery, and repairing watches. £ 2 reward will be paid by Mr. Porch to any person who shall give such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the accused. Information to be given to Ser- gent Vowles, Wells, w to Deputy Chief Constable Bisgood, Glastonbury, Somersetshire,— Bovi- street, March 17. LARCENY AND' EMBEZZLEMENT. Stolen between 12 noon and 3 p. m. on the 17th instant, from the dwelling- house of Mrs. Astbury, of Pelsall, the property of Peter Cordall, a lodger : £ 1 16s. 6d. in Gold and Silver; a silver verge Watch ( since found pawned at Wolverhampton). By a man who gave the name of FREDERICK SHAW, who had been lodging at the house a short time, 35 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, dark complexion, brown ( rather sandy) hair, no whiskers or moustache, has a little hair under the lower lip, dimple in chin, mark of a cut over right eye, and turns his toes in- wards ; dressed in old blue pilot cloth jacket, much worn and turning brown, black cloth single- bieasted vest, old moleskin trousers, blucher boots, hole worn through the toe of one, check scarf, and cloth cap, with ear flaps tied over top with tape. Has a downcast appearance, and states that he has worked in iron works at M~ ss End and Motherwell, in Scotland, and Hanley, Staffordshire, and is a puddler. Information to be given to Sergeant Arnold, Rushall, or to Police Constable Ellis, Pelsall, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, • March 22. A warrant is issued at Tunbridge Wells for the appre- hension of THOMAS STANFORD, charged with stealing in Jauuary last, the materials of two pairs of Boots : he is 37 years'of agfe, 5 feet 7\ inches high, very red hair and whiskers, which are cut short, freckled face, and is a shoe- maker. Information to be given to the Head Constable, Town Hall, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, who holds the warrant. — Bow- street, March 22. Stolen on the 18th instant, from the dwelling- house of Mr. Silvester Brown, at Milton, Weston- super- Mare : a patent lever double- case silver Watch, with ' Silvester Brown, Weston- super- Mare' engraved on the inside of the second case, aud without a ring ; a grey woollen scarf Shawl, with black border, and white and black fringe at the bottom. By a man who lodged there for the night, and stated that he was a foreman employed on the Bristol and Exeter Railway, and should require the lodgings for 2 months, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, dark hair and whiskers, and stout built ; dressed in a pilot cloth reefiDg jacket, dark cloth vest aud trousers, heavy boots, worn at the toes, and a cheesecutter cap, with a small piece of yellow braid across the front, and woollen shirt. Information to be given to Superintendent Gillbanks, Somerset Constabulary, Axbridge, or to Seigeant Hardwick, Weston- super- Mare, Somersetshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 22. Description of JOHN CLARKE, charged with stealing a sack of Oats ( recovered), the property of Henry Harris, at Westcot Barton : 40 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, dark bair and complexion, thin dark whiskers ; dressed in. brown jacket, cord trousers, black cap, and red or grey vest; he is an agricultural labourer, and dirty in appearance. Informa- tion to be given to Inspector Jones, Police Station, Dedding- ton, Oxon, who holds a warrant for bis apprehension.— Bcu- ureet, March 22. Description of SAMUEL WHITE, charged with stealing a " Watch and Chain, and a quantity of Wearing Apparel, at Tranmere, all of which have been recovered: he is about 22 years of ape, 5 feet 5 or G inches high, stoops, twists his shoulders when walking, dark complexion, small dark 2 POLICE GAZETTE. March 22 whiskers and moustache, turns his toes inwards; dressed in blue ribbed cloth shooting coat, grey tweed trousers, and black felt hat; he left Birkenhead on the 6th ultimo, is a plumber and painter and has relatives at Burton- on- Trent. Information to be given to Superintendent Egerton, County Hall, AbbeJ'- street, Birkenhead, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 22. Stolen on the 16th inst. from a bed- room at the Norfolk Hotel, Arundel, a lady's old- fashioned flat gold Geneva " Watch, initials H. G. on outside case, with gold Chain attached ( small link pattern): by a man from 30 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, proportionate build, brown hair, whiskers and moustache; dressed in a black overcoat, dark brown vest and trousers, high black hat, and carried a black leather bag. Information to be given to Head Con- stable Bobertson, Town Hall, Arundel, Sussex.— Bow- street, March 19. Absconded from South Shields, charged with embezzling £ 80 Is. : JOHN FOREMAN STOKER, clerk to a timber merchant, a native of South Shields, 22 years of age, 5 feet .7 inches high, stout build, face florid and often full of red pimples, blue eyes, very fair hair and moustache, no whiskers, rather sleepy looking, shortish nose, very red, speaks low, walks erect, ttsually very quickly, and is of gentlemanly appearance ; generally dressed in a fashionable grey suit and blue overcoat. £ 10 reward will be paid for his apprehension. Information to be given to Chief Constable Richardson, South Shields, who holds a warrant.— Bow- street, March 19. Charged by a warrant with stealing £ 160 on the 15th inst. the monies of employers, the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company, Victoria Station, Manchester : HENRY RILEY BAXTER, a booking clerk, 23 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, rather slender, large light blue eyes, light hair and complexion, very little beard or whiskers, effeminate appearance, small mouth, teeth prominent, one in front broken and black; usually dresses in a light suit. He is supposed to be accompanied by his wife, about the sane age and height. It is supposed that they will endeavour to leave the country. £ 10 reward will be paid upon his apprehen- sion and recovery of the money, or in proportion to the amount recovered. Information to be given at the Detective Office, Cheapside, Manchester.— Bow- street, March 19. Absconded on the 15th instant, from Lichfield, charged ( on a warrant) with embezzling £ 1 12s.: a man who went in the name of WILLIAM WILDY, alias WM. WELDEN, about 50 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, stout build, broad red face, small sandy whiskers, and rather curly hair, turning grey; dressed in fustian jacket, dark cord trousers with patch on one thigh, and soft black billycock hat ; he is a thatcher and gardener, and is supposed to have relatives living at Birmingham, Southampton, and Gloucester. Infor- mation to be given to Chief Superintendent Hernaman, Lichfield, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, March 19. Absconded on the 1st instant, from Kentish Town- road, charged with embezzling £ 14 : EDWARD MAPSTEAD, 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, sallow complexion, brown hair, whiskers, and moustache ; dressed in brown overcoat, dark trousers, and felt hat; a traveller. Warrant issued.— Metropolitan Police, Y Division, March 17. Absconded since the 6th instant, from Church- road, Battersea, charged with embezzling £ 1 16s. 8d., the mjnies of his employer : GUSTAVE ROBERT MOELCHARECK, 32 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, sallow complexion, light hair and whisKers ( flight), very stout; dressed ( supposed) in dark clothes; speaks good English with a German accent, and is a native of Saxony. Warrant issued.— Metropolitan Police, V Division, March 17. Absconded from Middlesborough, on the 27th ultimo, charged with embezzlement: MARK BROOMHEAD, a railway goods porter, 43 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, dark brown hair, large brown whiskers and moustache, but shaved under the chin, large roman nose, sler- der make, . and stoops slightly ; dressed in a dark blue pilot jacket, black cloth trousers and vest, new elastic- side boots, imitation seal- skin cap, blue necktie, with yellow flowers, and a puce and black striped shirt ; lie is a native of Hexthorpe, near Doncaster, and has been a soldier and a tailor ; frequents low public- houses, and horse racs. He was at Woolwich on the 11th instant, and left there for London. Information to be given to Chief Constable Saggerson, Middlesborough, York. ~- Bow- street, March 17. Stolen on the 15th instant, from an hotel in Dewsbury: one lady's gold lever Watch, white face, No. 60853, with gold Chain attached; two gold Keys, one plain " ansl the other had a topaz ; two gold Franc Pieces, one five and one ten, and a small gold Hoop and Compass ; one lady's gold Watch, No. 64879 and 60853, gold Chain, gold Seal, gold Key, gold Pencilcase, and a gold Key, Barwick, Keighley, engraved on it. By a man about 28 or 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark complexion, and slight moustache ; dressed in a dark suit, black billycock hat, and lace- up boots. Information to be given at the Borough Police Office, Dewsbury, York- shire.— Bow- street, March 17. Absconded on the 15th instant, charged with stealing two Cheques, one for £ 155, the other for £ 33, and £ 40 in Gold : THOMAS SMITH, late of _ 42, Euston- square, 16 years ef age, 4 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fair complexion, sharp features, and light browja hair ; dressed in blue over- coat, black pilot jacket under, dark trousers, leather leggings, and felt hat; he is rather good- looking, and of respectable appearance. Information to be given to Inspector Bailey, City of London Police, Detective Department, 26, Old Jewry, E. C.— Bow- street, March 17. Absconded early on the morning of the 15th inst. from a farm- house at Somerfordbooth, where he had been engaged as a servant, and slept in the house one night, stealing : one black cloth Jacket, one pair of grey- mixture Trousers with black stripe down the legs, and a double- breasted vest of the same material, all new : THOMAS CAPPER, about 21 yrs. of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, pale complexion, thin face, and slender build ; dressed in black jacket, light rough over- coat, brown slop, cord trousers, strong lace- up boots with brass eyelets, and light soft billycock hat, and had with him a pair of long brown leather leggings; he has been convicted several times of felony at Knutsford and Stafford. Information to be given to Superintendent Rowbottom, Middlewioh, or to Serjeant Gosling, Police Station, Astbury, Congleton, Cheshire, who holds a warrant for liis apprehension.— Bow- treet, March 17. Stolen on the 15th instant, from an hotel in the borough of Dewsbury : a small gold Watch, with a glass, gold Chain attached; a gold Necklet and Pendant;, three dress Rings, one turquoise and small diamond, one with pearls, and one garnet; also a seal- skin Purse, containing 2s. 6d. in Money. By a man, about 27 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high ; dressed in a dark suit, with a gold breast pin in liis scarf, no . c whiskers or moustache. Information to be given at the j ] Borough Police Office, Dewsbury, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, ] March 17. • Absconded on the 1st Instant, from Liverpool, charged j with embezzling £ 5,000: EDWARD JOHN BARRY",' cashier to a firm of timber brokers, a native of Liverpool, I from 34 to 38 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, rather J stout, square shoulders, full face, small lump on right eye- i brow, left eye shot out, gunpowder marks over the face, more particularly on left cheek and nose, also under left eye, has a j glass eye, wears blue spectacles, red- brown hair, parted in the centre, and whiskers and moustache same colour. He | walks erect, and is of gentlemanly appearance ; and dressed j in an Ulster overcoat. £ 100 reward will be paid by his employers, viz., £ 50 for his arrest, and the remainder for the recovery of the money, or in proportion to the amount recovered. Information to be given to Head Constable Greig, Liverpool.— Bow- street, March 15. FRAUDS AID AGGRAVATED MISBEMEAIOUSS. Absconded from Evesham on the 1st instant, charged with obtaining £ 12 by false pretences: WALTER TREDWELL, about 29 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches j scarf, and hard black felt hat, sometimes dressed in alight high, dark hair, rather thin pale face, whiskers shaved off, j coat and vest.
