Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Stgraature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. *#* Whenevor it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is giveH, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all ( Letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise th » insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. INFORMATIONS MUEDEh AND MALICIOUSLY WODIBMG On the 25th ultimo, a newly- born male Child was found in a field adjoining the Montpelier- road, Brighton, and at the coroner's inquest, a verdict of ' Wilful Murder' was returned. The body was wrapped up in two aprons, one white lineu, and the other a white ground cotton print, with pmall cross pattern in buff and green, a laundress's private mark is on the latter apron. A reward of £ 50 will be paid by govern- ment to any person who shall give such information and evidence as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the murderer or murderers of the child ; and the Secretary of State will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice not being the actual murdeier who shall give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. Information to be given to Chief Coustable White, Brighton, Sussex.— Bow- street, February 3. Absconded from Wheatley- hill, on the 14th ultimo, charged with night poaching, and seriously wounding R. Carruthers and a game watcher with a dagger : EDWARD APPLEBY, a coal miner, about 34 years of age, 5 ft. 11 ins. high, pioportionately built, fresh complexion, a moustache, and a tuft of hair ou chin, but no whiskers. He is a native of Bilston, Staffordshire. Information to be given to Super- intendent Scott, Police Station, Castle Eden, Durham.— — Bow- street, February 1. ROBBERY AND IARCEIT FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of a gentleman in Bolton, on the 31st ultimo : a silver lever Watch, maker J. Grounds, j Wigan, No. 5924, with silver dial, gold figures, and flowered in centre of dial, had attached a 9- carat gold Albert Chain, snake pattern, and a small oval gold plated Locket. Infor- mation to be given to Chief Constable Beech, Bolton, Lancashire.— Bow- street, February 3. Stolen from the person of a gentleman whilst travelling from Farnworth to Bolton, on the evening of the 28th ult. : a silver skeleton lever Watch, maker John Monk, Bolton, No. 47133, with white dial, and gold fingers ; had attached a gold albert Chain, to which was appended a gold Locket, set with a Guinea on one side and Blood- stone on the other. £ 3 reward will be paid for such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the property, on application to Chief Constable Beech, BoltoD, Lancashire.— Bow- street, Feb. 3. Description of a man charged with stealing a Two- shilling Piece from the person of George Field, in Royston Market, on the 27th ultimo : 20 years of age, about 5 feet 3 inches high, fair complexion, thin face, very little whiskers, and brown hair; dressed in dark trousers, brown or drab tweed vest, dark mixture coat, pockets on the hips, white dirty soft felt hat; he attends fairs and markets, carries a flag basket, selling nuts and oranges, and sometimes plays a tin whistle iu public- houses ; he is supposed to belong to Braintree, Essex. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Cocksedge, Royston, Herts.— Bow- street, February 3. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Between 7' 30 p. m. on the 30th ultimo, and 9 a. m. on the lst instant, the office of Messrs. Moser & Sons, solicitors, Kendal, was broken into, and about .£ 652 stolen from a safe, consisting of three or four £ 100 Notes ; two or three £ 50 Notes ; a £ 20 Note; a Bill for £ 50 of the Manchester Branch Bank of England, at 14 days No. L4303, dated 26th Jan- uary, 1876, payable to the order of J H. Law, and endorsed by him to Meser and Sons, and by them duly endorse J, and almost the whole of the remainder £ 10 or £ 5 Notes. Description of CHARLES PERCY CLIFFORD, a coal miner, who broke out of the dwelling- house of William Draycott, where he had been lodging, in High- street, Burton- en- Trent, at 4 a. m. ou the lst instant, and stole the following articles : a dark pilot Jacket, velvet collar, and lined with dark plaid; a pair of elastic- side Boots; three pairs of Stockings; a Singlet; a Muffler ; and a leather Purse, con- taining £ 1 ( Is. 7^ d. : he is about 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 ins. high, medium build, dark hair, cut short, mole on left cheek, dark whiskers round chin, and no moustache : dressed iu old flannel jacket, lined with carpeting, fustian waistcoat, double breasted, cord trousers, aud lace- up boots. Information to be given to Superintendent Bowen. Police Office, Burtou- on- Trent, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, February 5. On the evening of the lst instant, Laurestou House, the residence of Joseph Brierley, Esq., Rochdale, was entered by the bedroom window, and the following property stolen therein : a gold Bracelet, set with three pearls ; a pair of gold Ear- rings, design— nuts aud floweis ; a silver card Case, marked ' A. B.' The offender left behind him au umbrella, on the handle of which is a silver band, marked ' J. H.' £ 10 reward will be paid on conviction of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the property. Information to be given to the Chief Constable of Rochdale, Lancashire.— Bow- street, February 5. Between 1 and 7 a. m. on the 31st ultimo, the dwelling- house of Mary Ann Petteto, of Marden, was broken and entered and stolen therein : a man's frock Coat, made of cantorn material, two rows of smoked pearl buttons up the front, a pocket each side ; a pair of man's lace- up Boots, with square headed nails, a patch on left shoe, near the lace- holes; a plain white cotton Shirt ; about 3 lbs. of Cheese; and 2 lbs. of salt Pork. Information to be given to Superintendent Morgan, Kent Constabulary, Cranbrook. — Bow- street, February 3. Between 11 a. m. and 1 p. m. on the 31st ultimo, the dwelling- house of S. Hall, No. 45, Seaside- road, Eastbourne, was entered by means of skeleton keys, and stolen therein : A large camco Brooch ( Amazon killing a tiger), in plain gold setting. A circular enamel Brooch, small peail on enamel ground in centre, supported by four gold leaves, outer rim of pale grey enamel, inlaid with gold, and glass at back. A large oval pebble Brooch, with narrow gold setting. A small pebble Brooch, set iu gold. A bright gold Locket, with blue enamel cross on case, aud grey hair inside. A pair of coloured geld Ear- rings, chased, and amethyst ( violet) at top. An old Wedding Ring, with turquoise set in gold added. A gilt Pendant, with cameo, female head. A silver Vinaigrette, with ring added, initials on lid ' C. M. H.' A small gold and coral Chain, small gold Pitcher, with yellow stone set in foot, at end of chain. A silver English lever Watch, maker De la Cour, Chatham, No. 7471, white euamel dial, black figures, and gold hands, common Key attached with black ribbon. A gold watch Key, cut. A chased gold shirt Stud. Four Penknives, one with ' L. Hall,' and one with ' W. C. Simpson' or ' W. Clarke Simpson' engraved on handle. A pair of pebble Spectacles, set in silver. About 2s. worth of penny and halfpenny Postage Stamps. A dark leather Purse, with clasp. About £ 8 in gold silver and copper Monies. £ 5 reward will be paid for the apprehension and convistion of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the property, or in proportion to the amount recovered. Information to be given to Superintendent Newnham, Eastbcume, or at any Police Station in East Sussex.— Bow- street, February 3. Between 7' 30 p. m. on the 2/ th and 8 a. m. on the 28 th ultimo, the lockup shop belonging to Joseph William Bridge, of Church, ironmonger, was broken and entered by forcing open the back door of the premises with a bar about an inch broad at the bottom, and stolen therein : about forty 2- ft. Rules of various prices, all marked with the private trade mark of the firm, a number of them slide rules ; about forty pocket and pen Knives, chiefly of Rogers and Sons' manu- facture, but a few of them by Long, of Sheffield ; about eight Razors, all by Rogers and Sons, Sheffield, with private marks; about six Beer Taps, all with private marks ; . and 12s. in Silver and Copper from a drawer which was unlocked. Stolen by means of housebreaking, between 8' 45 and 9" 30 p. m. on the 28th ultimo : from a bedroom in the house of the Rt. Hon. Lord Ellenborough, Holly Spring, Bracknell, Berks : 1 lady's gold Watch, white dial, slight crack half way across, long gold Chain attached; imitation gold Locket, containing photograph of gentleman, gold Watch key, small gold Key, set with turquoise, dark blue enamel, and gold telescope Pencilcase, name— Mordau, and gold Seal in form of beehive, set with a bloodstone, engraved 1 Beatrice,' containing hair in two inner compartments, all attached to watch by a short gold chain. 1 lady's gold signet Ring, set with an amethyst, engraved with coronet and monogram ' BE.' 1 small silver Brooch, in form of a 1 utterly. V-' notian gold filagree Pin, in' -' iir^ of gotidola or Venetian boat, attached to two small chains. 1 gold cable Chain and Locket, set with pearls and diamonds in form of a cross, quite new. 3 gentlemen's shirt Studs, in form of flies, set with opals, rubies, emeralds, and diamonds, with small gold Venetian chain between each. 1 Brooch, in form of beetle, Scotch stones, yellow body, violet head, set in gold, with gold claws. 1 gilt Chatelaine, French, with Knife, Pincushion, and Whistle attached. 1 amethyst Brooch, set in gold, the stone about the size of a half- crown piece. 1 dark blue enamel Clasp, from which hair has been cut from either side, with one large diamond in centre, held by claw setting. A number of gold Seals, set with amethyst, crystal, & c., engraved with coronet, and on some family arms. 1 lady's small amethyst Seal, engraved ' O.' 1 ditto gold Watch aud Chain, double cased, with for- get- me- not in enamel on back, and figures indicating hours outside dial, makers —' Howell and James.' 1 gold mourning Ring, with ' Lord Ellenborough' engraved on black enamel. A lady's thick gold Watch, with old fashioned figures— 1, 2, 3, & c., on gold dial, probable makers' names— ' Rundell and Bridge.' 1 set of filagree Buttons, Spanish. 1 onyx sleeve Button, 1 auiethyst Ditto, aud 1 onyx Brooch— these three articles are real stones, but set iu imitation gold, and the fellow to each Button being left behind. 1 pair of black sleeve Buttons, with ' B.' on each, not real. 1 leather and steel Purse, containing £ 5 10s. in Gold, and a small steel Key ( being the duplicate of the gold and turquoise one attached to watch, and belonging to dressing- case at banker's) ; the purse is also sup- posed to have contained several silver sixpences. 2 gold Tassels with Chain attached. 1 silver watch Chain, short, like a curb chain. 1 Indian gold Medal, weight of gold £ 5, with Hindos- tanee characters on reverse side of medaL A reward of £ 100 will be paid to any person who will give such information and evidence that shall lead to the convic- | tion of the offender or offenders. Stolen ou the evening of the 27th ultimo, from a field at Upper Gornal, Sedgley : three yearling Calves, two of them red, one of which has a white face, the other strawberry colour, the property of Mr. James Ritson. Information to be given to Inspector Tomlinson, Police Office, Sedgley, Staffordshire.— Bousiriet, February 3. Further particulars of a man, who gave the name of GEORGE LEADER, committed for trial at the ensuing Rutland Assizes, charged with horse- stealing, & c., at Oakham, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 37th ultimo : he is 27 years of age, nearly 5 feet 0| inch high, brown hair, sandy whiskers, ha;-. el eyes, fiesk complexion, face long and freckled"; dressed iu a dark grey double- breasted coat, much too small for him, dark blue livery vest, with plated buttons and crest, dark mixture striped trousers, red and blue coloured scarf, brown deerstalker nat, and lace- up boots with plates on heels 2 February 5 and nailed ; he states he was born at Great Yarmouth. Nor- folk, and that he has lived in the service of several uoblemen and g'entlen, that he has a relative at Liverpool, and another at Whitby or Whippey, Yorkshire. Information to be given to the Chief Constable of Rutland, OaKham.— Bow- street, February 3. Stolen during the uight of the 25* h ult, from Vincent- square, Westminster : a dark chestnut Mare, 15 hands 1 inch high, blaze down face, scar on near side shoulder aud liiud leg, two splinters on fore legs ; also a dog Cart, painted dark green, imitation wicker- work all round, damaged near side, " Edward Curtice, 4, Moreton- street' on shaft ; and a set of light cart Harness, brass mounted. Supposed b> two men, dressed as stablemen.— Metropnlitan Police, B Division, February 1. LA& C£ N7 and embezzlement. Absconded from Westergate, near Chichester, ou the 2& th ultimo, charged with embezzling various sums of money belonging to Wm. Morris, of Aldingbourne, a baker : ALBERT CAIGER, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, light complexion, light hair, blue eyes, very few whiskers ; dressed in black coat, pockets at sides, dark grey trousers, with stripes, and waistcoat of same material, black necktie, and black hat, with band. Information to be given to Superintendent Pratt, West Sussex Constabulary, Chichester, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bcno- street, February 5. Description of WILLIAM CROPLEY, who absconded from the Whittlesey Workhouse, on the 22nd ultimo, taking and carrying away with him a suit of Clothes, the property of the Guardians: about 67 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, walks erect, but is somewhat lame having large varicose veins in one leg, rather stout, light hair and whiskers, turning grev, and light complexion; dressed in a dark beaverteen frock coat, single- breasted, with pocket inside left breast, tri. i. iaers aud vest of same material, all branded inside 1 Wy. U,' f the shirt is marked in a similar manner with ink., blucher boots, aud rather low- crowned dark hat. He has been a waterman, and has worked at wharves unloading ships, & c., and may be found at similai work iu some port town. Information to be given to Inspector Burrows, Whittlesey, Isle of Ely, Cambs, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, Febt wary 5. Absconded from Blackburn, charged with stealing Watches, Overcoats, & c. ( together with Ambrose Tattersali, who is remanded until the 9th iust) : WILLIAM WANOP, alias WILLIAM FLANNAGHAN, alias WM. SMITH, about 25 yeiis of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fair complexion, light brown hair, full light or sandy moustache, no whiskeis, thin face, Romaa nose ; dressed in a blue Chesterfield over- coat, with several pockets outside and inside, light shooting coat and vest, dark tight trousers, low shoes, and silk hat; has also a dark coat and vest, light trousers, and soft billy- cock hat ; carries a straw bass with him, often with a hand- kerchief tied round it, and sometimes a paper parcel. He is in possession of a quantity of watches, seals, brooches, & c., which he carrite iu Ilia overcoat pockets ; be is a very good engraver, was convicted in Carlisle about four years ago, has been in a reformatory school ( supposed Netherton, Northumberland), and frequents Manchester, Preston, Lancaster, Barrow, Carlisle, Newcastle- upon- Tyne, Dumfries, and Dundee; he is a native of Newcastle- upon- Tyne, and a gilder by trade. Description of AMBROSE TATTERSALL, alias WM. BRIGGS, alias WILLIAM VEEVERS : a french polisher, and a native of Clitheroe, Lancashire, 21 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, proportionate make, oval face, light brown hair, no whiskers or beard, fair complexion, ' X/ on left hand, ring mark on forefinger of left hand, tattooed between thumb and first finger of left hand, right little finger deformed, and ' M. A.' on upper left arm; dresaed respectably ; he was convicted at Manchester Assizes three or four years ago for stealing a watch at Salford ; also at Carlisle As- izes of highway robbery, together with Mary Elizabeth Wallace, and sentenced to 12 months; has frequented all the towns mentioned as being fiequented by Wanop, and he is now charged with nine different larcenies. Information to be given to Chief Constable Potts, Police Office, Xown Hall, Blackburn, Lancashire. — Bow- street, February 5. Description of two men who on the 16th ultimi stole from the Culham Station of the Great Western Railway a Portmanteau, and having taken out the contents, left it in a field : one respectably dressed in a suit of Oxford mixture cloth, about 5 feet 6 inches high, and wore a round felt hat; the other dressed in a round pilot coat, aud a shorter man. The following Articles were stolen from the portmanteau : a s suit of Clothes ; hunting Boots, Tops and Spurs; a pair of cord Breeches ; a pair of brown Breeches and Gaiters; a pair of Trousers ; a box of Cigars ; a small Flask ; two Prayer Books, the name of ' Amphlett' written in them ; two Waistcoats; a morning Coat; six pairs of worsted Socks ; four pairs of cotton ditto ; a hunting Flask, with crest engraved on it, & c. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Mason, Special Police, Great Western Railway, Paddington, London, W.— Bow- street, February 5. Stolen on the 28th ultimo, at Sprouston, Roxburgh : a morocco leather Pocket- book, containing two .£ 10 Notes ; and eleven £ 1 Notes, all of the Bank of Scotland. By WILLIAM CLELLAND, who immediately thereafter absconded : he is a millworker, lately residing in Hawick, 20 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair hair, no whiskeis or moustache, slender made, and pale complexion ; dressed in a suit of dark tweed, dark velvet cap, with peak, elastic- side boots, with buttons in front. Information to be given to Chief Constable Boultbee, Constabulary Office, Jedburgh, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 3. Absconded from Calne, Wilts, on the 30th ultimo, charged with embezzlement: HERBERT BREWER, a carman, about 23 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fair complexion ; dressed in a black cloth coat and vest, dark trousers, elastic- side boots, and a black jimcrow hat, bent in on the top. In- formation to be given to Superintendent Wiltshire, Chippenham, or to Inspector Millard, Calne, Wilts, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, Feb. 3. Absconded from Trowbridge, on the 1st instant : a man, about So years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, a tuft of hair on chin ; dressed in a twill slop, moleskin vest, cord trousers, black cap, and heavy boots ; he is charged with stealing and taking with him, a moleskin Jacket; two pairs of moleskin Trousers ; a rffoleskin Vest'; a wftite calico Shirt; two pairs of worsted Stockings ; and a twill Slop, the property of a railway labourer. Information to be given to Superintendent White, Trowbridge, Wilts,— Bow- street, February 3. Description of NOAH PICTOR, charged on a warrant with stealing Lead ( recovered) with two other men, who are committed for trial at Maidstone Quarter Session : 25 yrs. of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inchcs high, sallow complexion, blotchy face, dark hair, few dark whiskers meeting under chin, several teeth are missing, and is slightly built ; dressed in dirty cord trousers, dark brown overcoat, hard felt hat, red and black scarf, and heavy lace- up boots. He is a labourer and belongs to Wilmington, Kent. Information to bt given to Super- intendent Fread, Dartford, Kent.— Bow- st., February 3. Stolen from a dwelling- house in Burton- on Trent between 7 and 8 a. m. on the 28th ultimo: a pair of grey cloth Trousers, with a narrow black stripe down tach leg; a grey cloth Vest, double- breasted ; aud a pair of mau's new lace- up Boots, with patent leather up the fronts aud brass lace holes. By a lodger, who represented himself to be an engine fitter, and who slept in the house the two previous nights : about 25 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, dark curly hair, long features, no whiskers or moustache, crooked nose, and mark of an old wound ou the forehead ; dressed iu a black tommy bat, white jacket, sueh as fitters wear, and is supposed tc be wearing the stolen boots, as his own were left behind. He answers the description Of a persdu charged with a similai- offence at Smethwick on the 18th ultimo. Information to be given to Superintendent Bowen, Burton- on- Treut, Staffordshire. They have resided in this town for about a fortnight, and upon their arrival stated they had lately come from Cape Town, and that they bad also resided at Alexandria and Suez, and that a Major Austin, of the Royal Artillery, washer trustee under her late husband's will, and that she had £ 800 per annum. By these false pretences she obtained possession of the above goods, and of a furnished residence, at the rental of .£ 190 per annum, from a house agent; a warrant is granted for her apprehension.
