C. * t* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insevtion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor must lie prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. INFORMATIONS. MUB. D1EB AND MALICIOUSI/ ST WOUNDING Ou the morning of the 7th instant, the dead body of a | newly- born female Child was found in a garden in Bolton, wrapped in an old black and white striped cotton skirt. At the coronor's inquest a verdict was returned, ' That deceased died through the Wilful Neglect of some person or persons unknown.' Information to be given to Chief Constable Beech, Boltou, Lancashire.— Bow- street, January 15. A warrant has been issued for the apprehension of EMILY RICHARDS, of Carnon Downs, in the parish of Kenwyn, Cornwall, for the wilful murder of a child 1 month old, by throwing it down a shaft. At the inquest a verdict nf Wilful Murder was returned. She is the wife of Thomas Richards, who has been abroad some years, and is 29 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, sallow complexion, brown hair, and has false upper and lower front teeth ; dressed in black hat with black fall, and dark sealskin jacket; is sup- posed to be iu Loudon, and will probably try to emigrate, representing herself to be a widow. Her Majesty's Govern- ment have offered a reward of £ 50 to any person who shall yive, evidence leading * o the discovery and conviction of the said Emilv Richards. Information to be given to Chief Con- stable Gilbert, or to Superintendent Marshall, Truro, Corn- wall.— Bow- stree', January 15. And also stolen from the person ou the 1st instant: a silver lever Watch, gold hinges, plain back, ' J. S.' engraved on outer case, ' J. Shorrock' on dial, maker ' T. Bennett, Preston' on works. Information to be given to Chief Constable Oglethorpe, Borough Police Station, Preston, Lancashire,— Bow- street, January 6. Stolen iu Bolton : On the 1st instant, from the person of a gentleman : a silver lever Watch, No. 36073, maker Samuel Greenhough, Bolton, had attached a gold curb Chaiu, with Seal and Key. Also from the person on the 1st instant: a silver verge Watch, No. 227, maker Thomas Lee, Bury, and has ' J. Harrison' engraved inside the case. Also from the person of a gentleman on the 2nd instant: a silver lever Watch, with cream- coloured dial, on which is the name ' J. Smith,' No. 16685. Also stolen on the 31st ultimo, from a public- house in Bolton: a dark green cloth Overcoat, with black velvet collar, has four pockets outside with flaps over them, black j covered buttons, and lined with black serge. By a female servant, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, stout 1 made, fresh complexion, red nose, and addicted to drink ; I usually dressed in dark grey winsey dress, black bonnet, with red flower, and dark grey cloak. She is also charged I with stealing a Watch, & c. ( recovered). About 12 o'clock on the night of the 9th instanfc, BEN- JAMIN HUCKFEILD, of Sandbach, forgemau, was met on the railway bridge on Wheelock- road, Sandbach, by four men, who threw him over the parapet upon the railway embankment, causing severe injuries to his ; back, breaking- several of his ribs, and placing his life in great danger : he describes one of the men as being very tall, and having a very long nose, and dark whiskers under his chin; dressed in a velveteen jacket ( who will probably be found to have one of his ears injured, as Huckfield got hold of it as he was ' oeiug thrown over the bridge). Information to be given to Superintendent Roubottom, Constabulary Station, Middle- wicb, or to Inspector Hulme, Constabulary Station, Sand-, bach, Cheshire. - Bow- street,, January 13. Absconded from Nortliwich, on the 5th instant, charged with wilful murder : MARK LEDWARD, labourer, native | of Over, Cheshire, worked in North Wales, on railways, & c., I about 27 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, proportion- j ately made, pale or sallow complexion, large broad nose, no j whiskers or moustache, dark hair ; dressed in a dark pilot cloth coat, moleskin trousers, black billycock hat, and lace- up boots; may have a cut on one of his cheeks and other marks of recent violence, walks with a slouching gait, and is a dull looking man; belongs to the 1st Cheshire Militia, and may therefore try to enlist. Information to be given to Chief Constable Smith, Chester, or to Inspector Dutton, Northwich, Cheshire.— Bow- street, January 13. About 1 p. m. on the 30th ultimo, the dead body of a full growif female* child, was found in the vault of a privy, at Colne, Hutitingdon, wrapped in a pdrtiou of the Peterboro' Advertiser. At the inquest, a verdict of ' Wilful Murder' was returned against some person or persons unknown. Information to be given to Superintendent Spencer, Police Station, St. Ives, Hunts.— Bow- street, January 4. BUMIaSY AND MOUSE BREAKING. Stolen by means of shop- breaking, early on the morning of the 13th instant : a new gold Geneva bunting Watch, white dial; four new gold Geneva lever Watches, gold dials ; a lady's new gold Geneva Watch, gold dial ; six gold re- volving Seals, some with bloodstones, others white ; and two 9- carat gold albert Guards, embossed links. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Newcastle- on- Tyne, Dur- ham.— Bow- street, January 15. The office of Mr. Joseph Sankey, of Market- street, Bilston, was broken into during the night of the 9th inst. mt, and an office Time- Piece, with thejdoors on each side broken, and] the name—' Stringer, Bilston,' on the face, was stolen therefrom. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent McCrea, Police Station, Bilston, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, January 15. Stolen by means of housebreaking, between 9 and 10 p. m. on the 8th inst., from a bedroom in the house of the Countess Morella, Wentworths, Virginia Water : 1 gold Bracelet, with iron crosses, and date ' 1870— 71.' 1 gold Bracelet, with black enamel locket, with monogram ' C.' and crown. 1 blue enamel Bracelet, with ' M.' and coronet iu diamonds, containing miniature. 1 gold Locket, with double ' M.' engraved, and a photo- graph inside. 1 Locket, with ' GT' in euamel, containing photograph. 1 Locket, with Union Jacket, and Ear- rings to match. 1 Locket, with blue euamel coronet and ' M.' cottage of John Butt, of Hanley Castle, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a hlue pilot cloth Jacket, double- breasted, velvet collar, two pockets outside and one inside breast, nearly new; a pair of black cloth Trousers, nearly new ; a pair of cotton cord ditto, ditto ; a double- breasted black cloth Vest, two buttons inside, pink striped lining in inside of front; a pair of lightly made lace- up Boots, sprigged bottoms ; a blue and white check bundle Handkerchief ; a blue and white silk Handkerchief ; a soft round black billy- cock Hat; four Sovereigns, three Half- sovereigns, and four Half- crowns. There were left in the house a jacket, a pair of Trousers, and a pair of Boots, all much worn. Two men of the following description, who slept in the tramp ward at the Upton- on- Severn Union on the previous night, are suspected : one about 24 years of age, about 5 feet 4 inches high, brown hair cut short, slight beard and moustache, of slender make, and is believed to have been then wearing the clothes left in Butt's cottage : the other is about 31 years of age, about 5 feet 5j inches high, light brown or sandy hair, and is believed to have been then wearing a suit of grey clothes. They are probably now wearing the stolen clothes, and may have separated and gone in different directions. Information to be given to Superintendent Checketts, Police Office, Upton- on- Severa.— Bow- street, January 11. Description of CHARLES WOOD, alias WINTER- BOTTOM, charged with breaking into a shop, in Sheffield, on the night of the 30th ultimo : he is about 37 years of age. 5 feet 6i inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes, has aN large mark on lip, is pockpitted, a weaver, and a native of Glossop or Manchester. He was apprehended ou the 5th of January, 1S69, at the Glossop Station, for house- breaking at Blackburn, near Rotherham, and convicted and sentenced to 18 months hard labour at the following West Riding Spring Assizes. He is supposed to be accompanied by a woman who was couvicted at Sheffield Sessions, 9th April, 1866, for being in possession of counterfeit coin, and wan sentenced to 5 years penal servitude : she is 26 years of age, 5 - feet 1J inch high, fresh complexion, auburn hair, light grey eyes, short broad face, small sunken eyes, and thick lips. Information to be given to Chief Constable Jackson, Sheffield. Yorkshire.— How- street, January C. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person on the 24th ultimo : a silver Geneva Watch, chased flowered back, very small, No. 727. Also stolen from the person on the 25th ultimo : a silver- Geneva Watch, No. 415, has a yellow stripe rouud the dial, and had attached a gold plated albert Guard and Locket. Also stolen from the person on the 29th ultimo : a gold Locket, oval shape, wheat- sheaf on one side, contains the photo of a gentleman, had attached a thin necklet Chain, with small balls ; a pair of gold Ear- rings, chased, and set with green stones, and a pair of plated Ear- rings. 1 gold Locket with turquoises, 1 Brooch and Ear- riugs gold, with ' A. E. I.' in diamonds on blue enamel. 1 gold hunting Watch, by Chedel, Paris, with short Chain attached. 1 gold Watch, by Klaftenberger, Albert Chain and Seal, with ' M.' and coronet. 1 gold Bracelet, containing miniature, with ' M.' and coronet in diamonds ami blue enamel. 1 large blue enamel oval Locket, set round with diamonds, and coronet and ' M.' iu diamonds. And a large quantity of other Jewellery. A reward of £ 200 will be paid to any person who will give such information as shall lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the property, or in proportion to the amount recovered. Information to be given to the Chief Constable of Surrey, Guildford, or to Superintendent Bungard, Surrey Constabulary, Cheitsey— Bow- st., Jan. 15. Stolen by means of housebreaking between 4 p. m. on the 6th and 12 noon on the 7th instant, at Squenaut fach, Llanfeclian: a black cloth Waistcoat, with small white stripes ; a pair of old yellow framed Spectacles ; and a small cupboard Key. Supposed by two men, tramps — one about 53 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, swarthy com- plexion, heavily pockpitted, dark hair, has lost the left eye, and the right forefinger from the second joint; the other is about 31 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, swarthy complexion, dark hair, grey eyes, and Roman nose, very re- ceding forehead, and round shoulders. Information to be given to Superintendent Ellis, Welshpool, or to Police Con- stable Lewis, Llausaintffraid, Montgomeryshire.— Bow- street, January 13. During the night of the 4th instant the dwelling- house of Joseph Lees, of Cotton, near Cheadle, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a £ 10 Bank of England Nate, £ 5 in Gold, and a silver verge Watch, No. 14, aud has ' J. Lees' scratched ou the inside case. Information to be given to Superintendent Williams, Leek, or to Sergeant Phillips, Police Station, Cheadle, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, Jan. 11. Between 7 a. m. and 6 p. m. on the 8th instant, the HORSE 4lj& TD CATTLE STEALING. Stolen during the night of the 10th instant, from South Lambeth- road : a brown Mare, 14 hands high, saddle marked, white star on forehead, hair rubbed off each shoulder, off hind fetlock swollen, root of nail sore from friction of crupper; a set of black Harness, plated mounts; two Rugs, one light brown, one black railway ; and a blue and white check horse ~ Ro\\ ev.— Metropolitan Police, W Division, January 13. Stolen from a field at Penarth, on the night of the 4th instant: a rusty dark mare Pony, 6 years old, about 12 hands high, with a small white stripe on nose, small drooping ears, aud a switch tail. Also a black maTe Pony iu Foal, 7 years old, about 13 hands high, black mane, switch tail, and >> n the near hip are the letters ' D. I.' burnt in, but only visible on close examination. £ 1 reward is offered for the recovery of ; either of the Ponies, and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Superintendent Sadler, Bridgend, or to Inspector Adams, Penarth, Glamorganshire. — Bow- street. January 13. Stolen between the 3rd and Cth ultimo, from a field at Ousby, near Penrith, Cumberland : a 3- year- old black- faced fat wether Sheep, marked with the letter ' O' on the near hock, the letters ' 1N ' aud the figure ' 1 ' burnt in the horns, and the letter ' O ' burut in the face. Also stolen, on the night of the 25th ultimo, from a field at Great Salkeld, near Penrith, Cumberland : a fat shearliDg Leicester tup Sheep, about 20 lbs. per quarter, marked on the near side with , the letter ' N,' but nearly obliterated. Information to be given to Superintendent Fowler, Penrith, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle, Cumber- land.— Bow- street, January 8. LAKCSK Y AND EMBEZZL£ 1< SE^' T. Description of ROBT. STAFFORD HEPTONSTALL, Agent and Traveller for the Ljeds Patent Tube and Fire Brick Company, who is charged upon a warrant with tm- bezzleiuant : from 30 to 35 years of age, about 5 feet S iicats high, medium build, smart appearance, dark brown hair, beard, and moustache ; dressed in dark clothes and generaliy wears a felt hat. Information to be given to the Chief Con- stable, Town Hall, Leeds.— Bow- street, January 15. Further information recpecting HENRY alias HARRY HUNT, who absconded from Broome, Norfolk, charged with larceny, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 28th ultimo : he is supposed to be wearing his beard aud moustache, a lock of hair iuclined to curl each side of his head, prominent nose, sometimes wears a blue guernsey, and had with him a drub cloth overcoat. Information to be given to Inspector Foster. Police Station, Bungay, Suffolk, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Ben. sireet, January 15. Description of two women who absconded from Rydal VilU, Eastbourne, Sussex, on the 19th ultimo, charged with stealing three new calico Chemises, which were sent to the ho'we by Mr. N. Strange, draper, on approbation : One is about 42 years of ago, middle height, fair com- plexion, grey eyes, light- brown or golden- coloured hail ( dytd dark), and medium figuie. POLICE GAZE January 15 he is a deserter from the 37th Brigade DepOt. Information to be given to Superintendent Deggan, Frome, or to Police Constable Lewis, radstock, Somersetshire, who holds a war- rant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, January 8. Stolen from Market Drayton, on the Gth instant : a new double- breasted short pilot cloth Jacket, bound with braid, velvet collar, red and black plaid lining, born buttons ; a double- breasted Vest of same material, bound with, braid ; and a pair of watertight Boots, No. 6 size, brass eyelets, double row of nails round outside, and three rows in centre, nearly new. By a tramping cooper, who gave his name GEORGE ALBERT SKELLEY, about 30Jyears of age, about 5 feet 2 inches high, brown hair, pale swarthy com- plexion, no beard or whiskers, and dark moustache ; he has tramped about the country a good deal, but has resided in Drayton during the last five months. Information to be given to Superintendent Haines, Whitchurch, or to Sergeant Howells, Market Drayton, Salop, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- street, January 8. Siolen from a lodging house at Rugeley, on the night of the 6th instant: a pair of blucher Boots and an old verge Watch, No. 3325. By a tramp, about 50 years of age, 5 feet 6 cr 7 inches high, and no whiskers ; dressed in velveteeu jacket, cord waistcoat, old moleskin trousers, and billycock hat. He will probably be wearing the stolen boots, having left an old pair behind. Information to be given to Sergeant Johns, Police Office, Rugeley, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, January 8. Description of PATRICK, alias JOHN JOYCE, a bricklayer, charged with stealing a Turkey ( recovered) at Whitby: 28 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh complexion, grey eyes, light brown hair, slight moustache, no whiskers, and walks erect; dressed in a blue pilot jacket, doable breasted cloth vest, woollen cord trousers, white muffler, elastic- side boots, and stiff hat. He is a native of Whitby, but of Irish parents, has relatives residing at Liver- pool, Preston, Wakefield, York, Redcar, Gateshead, and Newcastle- upon- Tyne. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Ryder, North Riding Constabulary, Whitby, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, January 6. Absconded, charged with stealing I5s. 7id., the monies of his master at Wadhurst, on the 28th ultimo : DANIEL SOPSHEAD, about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion and hair, very slight dark mou tache, stoat figure, and is a labourer; dressed in cord jacket and trousers, cloth cap, and supposed to be wearing a grey Militia overcoat, with red collar, and a band across the back. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Peerless, Uckfield, Sussex, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, January 6. 10 inches high, sallow complexion, hair and ' whiskers turning grey, proportionate build, scar over left eye, and an old wound on one leg ; dressed in cotton cord trousers, brown or | black coat and vest, and black cap, all old and very dirty, j He is accompanied by his wife and a little boy : she is 25 yrs. of age, 5 feet high, fair complexion, light hair, and stout build; dressed in old cotton dress, grey shawl, and old black bonnet: the boy is about 3 years old, and has light curly hair. FELOKIES. ( Not otherwise described). Charged with the abduction of a girl, & c. : WILLIAM PRINCE, alias SEIVERS, 27 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, thin, fair complexion, clean shaved, brown curly hair, light blue eyes; dressed in dark coat, vest, and trousers, lace- up boots, and black felt hat, and has the appearance of a horse coper; supposed travelling as agent to the Somerset Peat Company, Limited, with a horse and light spring cart, and has with him two black greyhounds. The girl is 13 years ef age ( looks older), tall and stout, dark complexion, slightly pocumarked; dressed in black dress, red and black plaid shawl, and black hat.— Warrant issued.— Metropolitan Police, V Division, January 11. MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATIONS. Description of SAMUEL CALOW, charged with burglary, and committed for trial at the next assizes at Derby : 23 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark brown hair, grey eyes, fresh complexion, he is a labourer, and n native of Brampton, Derbyshire. Also of ARTHUR CH1LDS, committed for trial, charged with larceny : 31 years of age, 5 feet inches high, dark brown hair, hazel eyes, sallow complexion, a labourer, and a native of Brampton, Derbyshire. Photographs of each can be obtained. Information to be given to Head Constable Home, Chesterfield, Derbyshire.— Bow- street, January 15. Description of a tramp committed to Montgomery Gaol, from Welshpool, on the 11th instant, for 8 days, charged wit)., vagrancy, and who gave his name THOMAS HORLEY, and said he belonged to Ashby- de- Ia- Zouch, Leicestershire : he is 43 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, dark hair, grey eyes, and scars on forehead ; dressed in a pair of grey striped cloth trousers, old black waistcoat, old brown ribbed cloth coat, black hat, and old lace- up boots. Infor- mation to be given tc Superintendent Ellis, Police Station. Welshpool, Montgomeryshire.— Bow- street, January 15. Description of JOHN JOHNSON, alias ALFRED TITCOMBE, committed for trial at the next Berks Assize.-, for larceny: 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fresli complexiou, light brown hair, beard, and moustache ; dresseu in cord waistcoat, dark ribbed trousers, patched on the knees, no coat, dark plaid woollen shirt, old black billycock hat, and blucher boots. States he is a native of Wootten Bassett, Wilts. He was convicted in January last at the Gloucester Quarter Sessions, and sentenced to 12 months imprisonment and 2 years police supervision. Information to be given to Superintendent Reece, County Constabulary Office, Faring- don, Berks.— Bow- street, January 15. Missing from his home, No. 1, Woodlands Boscombe, Bournemouth, Hants, since the 28th ultimo : WILLIAM MASSON, 14 years of age, about 4 feet high, fresh com- plexion, brown hair and eyes, and has a rather large nose ; dressed in black monkey jacket, dark blue overcoat, cord trousers, blue cloth Scotch cap, and old spring- side boots. It is feared that some ill has befallen him. Information to be given to Superintendent White, Hants Constabulary, Ringwood, or at the Police Station, Bournemouth, Hants.— Bow- street, January 13. Description of a man who gives name of ISAAC WOODWARD, a tramping wheelwright, charged cn remand with larceny at Shrewsbury : about 70 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, florid complexion, white hair, face shaved, and has lost little finger of left hand ; dressed in dark coat auo vest, white slop jacket, fustian trousers, and black billycock hat. Information to be given to Head Constable Davits, Shrewsbury, Salop.— Bow- street, January 13. O The other is about 30 years of age^ rather tall, pale face dark eyes, black hair, and rather slight figure, both dressed in inourB They are supposed to be going from town to town, and are likely to be found in fashionable watering places. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Newnham, Eastbourne, Sussex.- - Bow- street, January 15. Stolen from the workshop of Thomas Langler, of the Crews Arms Inn, Ugborough, Devon : a tenon Saw, a ( i- inch Square, a pair of cutting Pliers, a Stock, a smoothing Plane, and a carpenter's Tool Basket, lined with canvass and bound with web. By an Irish tramp, about 32, years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fair complexion, dark hair, red whiskers, and generally wean shaved ; dressed in a white slop, blue serge frock underneath, cord trousers, grey ditto underneath, and lace- up boots; he said he was a wire worker, of Ply- month, and was working for Thomas Langler for three days. He absconded early on the morning of the 4th instant, taking the stolen property with him.
