No. 5606 MONDAY, DECEMBER 21, 1874 Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear tlie { Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may he made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. *#* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any aiticle in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded on War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor,, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Description of JOHN MORAN, against whom a warrant has been issued, charging him with the wilful murder of Charles Langley, alias Rough Charlie, who died on the 2nd instant, from the effects of an assault committed upon him by Moran on the 26ch ult., on which date Moran absconded : about 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, ruddy com- plexion, round features, brown hair, cut short, scar on left cheekbone, and clean shaved ; dressed usually as a horse dealer, which occupation he follows ; he is well known at' the principal markets and fairs in the kingdom, and has also been engaged in England and Ireland as a trotting match rider. It is supposed that he will endeavour to emigrate. Information to be given to Chief Constable Glossep, Police Office, Birmingham.— Bow- street, December 9. 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, slight build, small light - whiskers and moustache ; he is supposed to be wearing the stolen over- coat, having left his own coat behind. Information to be given to Superintendent Crisp, Stone, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, December 21. Between 6 and 8 p. m. on the 13th instant the dwelling- house of Mr. Samuel Ruff, Draper, 34, High- street, Watford, was entered by means of false keys, and stolen therein : £ Zo in Gold and Silver ; a silver Geneva Watch, with gold Albert Chain attached; and a broken gold Pencil- case ; six ladies gold Rings— one with two rows of diamonds and rubies in centre, one turquoise with diamond in centre, one with a single row of pearls and sapphire in centre, one with six stones, various, one with hair in centre, and one with, corals all round ; a gold Brooch with pendant and purple stones ; a gold enamelled Locket with hair in centre ; a plain gold Locket; two gold Studs with rubies in centre on white ground. £ 5 reward will be paid for the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Inspector Chapman, Police Station, Watford, Herts. — Bens street, December 18. Between 6 and 8 p. m. on the 13th instant, the dwelling- house of Thomas Bradfield, Ettingshall, near Bilston, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : about £ 9 in Money, one English silver lever Watch, maker— Payne and Son, Abingdon, No. 4455 ; one small Geneva silver Watch; a gentleman's gold Ring with the initals ' T. B.' engraved on the inside, white stone with brown border ; one plain gold Ring with sapphire stone ( yellow); a small gold Brooch with five blue stones ; one gold keeper Ring, hair in groove, chased round with fern leaves; and one pair of gold Ear- rings, with three loops. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent McCrea, Police Office, Bilston, Staffordshire. — Bow- street, December IS. Stolen during the night of the 27th ultimo, from a field at Buttington, near Welshpool: a bay mare Pony, about hands high, aged, black legs, and tail cut square just above the hocks. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Newtown, or to Police Constable Thomas, Buttington, Welshpool, Montgomery shire.— Bowst., Dec. 14. FORGERY. Absconded on the 24th ultimo, charged © n a warrant with forgery : WALTER COLLIS, 18 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark complexion, hair, and eyes, slight moustache, oval face; dressed in grey overcoat, blue serge yachting jacket under, daik vest and trousers, high hat; walks very erectly aud is of gentlemanly appearance ; friends reside at Cherry Orchard- road, Croydon. Information to be given to the City of London Police, Bow- lane Station.— Bow- street, December 21. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of a gentleman in Sunderland, on the evening of the 11th instant: a gold lever Watch, No. 12344, maker Marshall, Sunderland. Supposed by a tall woman, dressed in dark clothes. Information to be given to Chief Constable Stainsby, Sunderland, Durham.— Bow- ureet, December 14. LARCENY AMD EMBEZZLEMENT. Description of THOMAS BISHOP SAUNDERS, for whose apprehension a warrant is issued for embezzlement : about 37 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, fair complexion, light brown hair, moustache, aud beard, stout make, he is a commercial traveller, aud a native of Aylesbury ; dressed in a thick grey cloth suit. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Peacock, Lewes, or at any Police Station in East Sussex.— Bow- street, December 21. Stolen from a gunsmith's shop in Middlesborough, on tlie night of the 18th instant: a small Pocket Pistol and two small Powder Flasks. By a man, from 22 to 24 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high ( supposed), light complexion, no whiskers or moustache ; dressed in old grey topcoat, old drab cord trousers, tight fitting cap, and old boots. Also stolen from an eflice in Middlesborough, between 9 and 10' 4o p. m. on the 18th instant: a japanned Cash Box, about 15 inches long, 7 or 8 inches broad, and 6 inches deep, containing 3s. worth of 6d. Stamps, 3s. worth of 4d. Stamps, 4s. worth of 3d. Stamps, 2s. or 3s. worth of 2d. Stamps, about 12s. worth ot Id. Stamps, Is. 6s. worth of ^ d. Stamps, and 8d. in Copper. Information to be given to Chief Constable Stevens, and vest, tweed trousers much worn, elastic- side boots with Town Hall, Rochdale, Lancashire.— Bow- street, December 16. ! plain fronts and high heels ; sometimes carries a black water- . . . , , , . , . , proof coat, and leggings. He was for sometime employed at Stolen by means of housebreaking during the night of Corsteith Farm, near West Derby, Lancashire, and may have the 10th instant, at Meriden : three pairs of_ plated Nut goue there in seMcll of employment. Information to be Crackers ; one silver Salt Spoon; one pair of men's side- spring Boots, new; one cloth Jacket ; two pairs of cloth Trousers ; and one piece of Cloth; the trousers, jacket, and cloth were found pledged in Birmingham. The offence is supposed to have been committed by two tramps— one about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, ruddy complexion, sandy moustache, no whiskers, a » d respectably dressed in dark clothes ; the other, about 60 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark complexion, and black whiskers all round his face ; shabbily dressed, and both supposed to be Germans. Information to be given to Inspector Thomas, Constabulary Station, Coleshill, Warwickshire.— Bow- street, December 14. given to Chief Constable Murphy, Wigtown, N. B.- Decsmber 21. - Bow- st., BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Button Bridge, on the 21st ultimo : a fustian Vest, with flaps over the pockets, nearly new; a pair of Leggings, same material; a plum coloured Shawl, faded, green and red border, with deep fringe; a blue and white bundle Handkerchief; a dark blue rcugh Overcoat, with velvet collar, single- breasted, cloth buttons, red woollen plaid lining torn in the back, and repaired with grey linsey; a small black and white plaid scarf Shawl ; and a brown and white Neckerchief, cut in two. By RICHARD JONES, alias REDMAN DICK, 58 years of age, looks younger, 5 feet inches high, fair complexion, sandy hair and whiskers, all round his face, broken nose, stout, and strong make ; dressed in the stolen overcoat, mole- skin trousers, dark rough cap, with ear- laps tied over the top, and strong lace- up boots, one boot slit open in frout, is a sawyer ; he was traced through the forest to the road leading from Cleobury Mortimer to Worcester, at Clowstop, and is supposed to be in Worcestershire or Herefordshire; he was sentenced to 7 years penal servitude at Worcester Summer Assizes, 1850, for housebreaking, also to 6 months imprison- ment at Worcestershire Sessions, in 1865, and 7 years penal servitude, at Shrewsbury, in April, 1866. Information to be given to Superintendent Ivins, Bridgnorth, or to Sergeant Collis, Cleobury Mortimer, Salop, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow street, December 21. Stolen by means of housebreaking between 1 and 4 p. m. on the 15th instant, at Hobbergate, near Stone: a brown cloth Overcoat, with brown velvet collar, buttons covered with cloth, two pockets outside and one inside left breast, and a small one above the outside right- hand pocket; a black cloth Jacket, two pockets outside and one inside left breast, bound round with black braid; a pair of three- quarter Wel- lington Boots, newly clumped ; and a pair of grey worsted Stockings. Supposed by a tramp, about 25 yeais of age, HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen on the 1st instant, from Cheshunt : a chestnut mare Pony, 12£ hands hands high, hog maned, has a blemish on near fore fetlock. ,£ 10 reward.— Metropolitan Police, Y Division, December 21. Stolen during the night of the 10th instant, from a field in Ladywell, Sydenham : a brown Mare, aged, 15 hands high, branded on hoof, hair off near hock, and in good condition.— Metropolitan Police, P Division, December 18. Description of JOSEPH SCOTT, for whose apprehen- sion a warrant has been issued for stealing a Horse, the property of Mr. S. H. Self, on the 19tli ultimo, at Knares- borough : about 34 years of age, 5 feet 6f inches high, dark complexion, brown [ eyes, dark brown hair and dark brown bushy whiskers, lost some upper teeth, scar on back and on throat, mole on right elbow, and white spot on left thigh, a labourer, and a native of Knaresborough : dressed in a dark shooting coat, fustian or cord trousers, and hairy or Scotch cap, has the appearance of a tramp; he was sentenced to 7 years penal servitude at the West Riding June Sessions, 1867, previous to which he served several periods in gaol, and was discharged from Portland Prison in December, 1872, on licence, he has recently been seen at Knaresborough. His photograph may be seen on application to Superintendent Haworth, Knaresborough, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, Dec. 18. Description of JAMES FORD, who is charged at Northampton with stealing six Heifers and a Cow, recovered, the property of Mr. Henry Mobbs, Billing- road, on the 5th instant : about 65 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, sharp features, proportionate build, sandy hair and whiskers, turning grey ; dressed in a long drab overcoat, old silk hat, and leather gaiters ; he speaks slowly, and has a very whining voice ; he has a relative residing at Coldesden, Bedfordshire, where he may probably go. Information to be given to Chief Constable Keenan, Northampton, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, December 16. Stolen from Morehampton Park, about the 11th instant, the property of Mr. Tomson : three Hereford Heifers, coming 2 years old, in calf, one with a drooping horn, and one has a deal of white about her. Information to be given to Mr. Tomson, or to Superintendent Tanner, Abbey Dore, Hereford.— Bom street, December 16. Description of FRANCIS JOHNSON, alias GEORGE MOODY, charged with having, on the 18th instant, at Brigg, stolen— a pair of short leather Leggings, fasten with loops and buckle at top ; two closing Awls, a stabbing Awl, a shoemaker's small Knife, a ball of white Hemp, a meer- schaum Pipe, and a leather Strap, the property of George Turner : he is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, dark complexion, black hair, small whiskers and moustache; dressed in two old dark cloth coats, black vest, white ditto underneath, violet and white neckerchief, fustian trousers ( which have been torn at right knee and a patch put under- neath and darned down), and stiff hat; supposed to be a bricklayer, but may be hawking herrings or mussels. He is supposed to belong to Beverley, and to have been convicted there of stealing birds. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Danby, Brigg, Lincolnshire, wlxo hold a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, December 21. Absconded from Westbury, Wilts, on the 14th instant, charged with stealing, on the 13th instant, two Ducks ( one recovered), the property of Mr. Joseph Smith, Dilton Mills, Westbury : a man, a native of Codford St. Mary, Wilts, about 20 years of age, about 5 feet 5 inches high, very little wkiskers, rather sandy ; dressed in a short pilot cloth coat, dirty moleskin trousers, and billycock hat; he is a labourer, and worked at Trowbridge for about two years. Information to be given to Superintendent Abbott, Warminster, or to Sergeant Wheeler, Westbury, Wilts.—• Bow- street, December 21. Description of THOMAS SMITH, charged upon a warrant with embezzlement: 26 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, rather stoutly built, black whiskers and mous- tache ; dressed in grey cheviot coat and vest, light striped trousers and black felt hat. He has been a travelling pack- man. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Leeds, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, December 18. Absconded from Horsham, on the 12th instant, charged with stealing, the property of his employer Mr. D. Richard- son, a plumber's Bag, green and white, a Bossing Mallet, two Bossing Sticks, a box Dresser, marked 1 D. R.', a pair of Cutting Shears, an iron Chisel, a pair of Gas Pliers, a copper Rasp and Shave Hook, a 2- foot Rule, an Overcoat, and a lead Dummy on stick : a tramping plumber, 55 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark hair and complexion, dirty appear- ance, and wears a gilt ring on right little fmger; diessed in a brown coat, striped vest, dark cord trousers, black and white scarf, and black stiff felt hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Henderson, West Sussex Constabulary, Horsham.— Bow- street, December 18. Stolen from a jeweller's shop in Warrington, at 5 p. m. on the 15th instant: a gold lever Watch, with good dial, spring- up ring cap, richly- chased movements, No. 6698 ; and a silver lever Watch, which has since been found pledged. By a German or Swiss, named JOSEPH FISHER, about 30 yf ars of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, swarthy complexion, dark hair, thin dark moustache, no beard or whiskers, and rcund 2 POLICE GAZETTE, December 21 features; dressed in new pilot monkey jacket, oM black cloth trousers, black billycock hat with soft crown, and low shoes.; He speaks with a foreign accent, is a watchmaker, and the. stolen Watches belonged to his employer, for whom he has worked for the last three weeks; has also worked in London. A warrant is issued for his'apprehension. Information to be given to Chief Constable Hunt, Warrington, Lancashire. — Bow- street, December 18. Description of a man who absconded from Yeovil, on the 11th instant, charged with stealing a pair of Boots ( recovered) : 35 to 40 years of age, about 5 feet 10 inches high, fair complexion," no whiskers, and light moustache; dressed in mixture coat and vest, high hat, with - black band. He hangs about commercial hotels at dusk. Information to be given to Superintendent Smith, Yeovil, Somerset.— Bow- Street, December 18. Stolen on the 7th inst., from Clare- terrace, Kensington : a gold Geneva Watch ; three small Keys ; a gold " Pin, net with large pearl, small gold chain attached ; a ditto, turquoise and pearls, two Garnets ; five gold Brooches _ ( one ruby and garnets, one set with large garnets, one set with three small garnets, two cornelian); a small tortoiseshell and gold Box ; ten gold Bings ( one set with hair and emeralds, one chased keeper, one wedding, one opal, two set with two amethysts, one pearl, one round, one sapphire, one with three compart- ments for hair) ; and £ 1 10s. in Gold. By a man, 25_ years of age, medium height, sallow complexion, dark hair cut short, grey eyes, small features, slight figure ; wore a dark overcoat.— Metropolitan Police, T Division, December 16. Absconded on the 12th instant, stealing £ 3 18s. 6d., the moneys of his employer : a youth, 18 years of age, 5 feet high, fair complexion, dark hair ; dressed in dark blue pilot jacket, dark striped trousers, and black deerstalker hat. •— Metropolitan Police, E Division, December 16. Description of a tramping glass and china mender, who is charged with stealing an iced glass Comport, an engraved flower Vase, and a glass Tumbler, the property of Charles William Hind, at Gainsborough, on the 5th instant : 45 to 50 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fair complexion, light hair and whiskers, which are turning grey ; dressed in black coat and high silk hat, and carried a large bass, containing his tools; he is supposed to be a native of Yorkshire, and to reside in some part of that county when not on tramp. In- formation to be given to Superintendent Truelove, County Police Station, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, who holds » warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, December 10. Absconded from Linslade, on the 8th instant, charged with stealing eight quarters of Wheat and one quarter of Beans, the property of Thomas Birdsey, his master : EDMD. HEDGES, farm bailiff, 34 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair and whiskers ; dressed in dark clothes, brown overcoat, billycock hat, and white neckerchief. Supposed to be about Islington, and was 9 years an omnibus conductor in Islington, London, and left about 4 years ago ; he is supposed to be known at the Cattle Market. Informa- tion to be given to Inspector Sapwell, Police Station, Linslade, Bucks, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. •— Bow- street, December 14. Description of JAMES R. SMITH, charged on warrant with stealing, on the 18th October last, a £ 10 Bank of England Note, the property of William Edward Spencer 21 years of age, 5 feet 4£ inches high, rather full face, grey and full eyes, upper lids rather inflamed, dark brown hair, no whiskers beard or moustache, scrofula scars under right ear jaw and chin. Information to be given to Chief Constable Farndale, Town Hall, Leicester.— Bow- street, December 14. Description of GEORGE LITFORD, who is charged ( with two others in custody) with having, on the night of the 22nd ultimo, broken and entered the dwelling- house of John Wright, of Minchinhampton, and stolen therein £ 23 12s. 6d. in Gold and Silver and two silver Watches and a silver Guard ( one of which has since been recovered): he is from 25 to 28 years of age, about 5 feet 11 inches high, pale com- plexion, and eruption on face ; dressed in shabby clothes and heavy boots ; he generally works as a deal springer, and had for some time previous to the 5th instant lodged in the Pithav, Bristol. Information to be given to Superintendent Hanbidge, Stroud, Gloucestershire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bmo- street, December 14. Stolen from a dwelling- house in Tranmere, on the morning of the 11th instant: a pair of elastic- side pegged Boots, nearly new, ' Maker Atkin, Birkenhead,' stamped under instep ; a pilot or rough cloth Jacket, has been turned woollen lining, with red stripe; a grey tweed Suit, maker' 1 name on loop inside collar and on buttons, ' Myers & Co. a pair of black Trousers, fly fronts,. no linings, nearly new, maker's name on buttons, ' Deakin, Bock Perry ;' a double breasted black cloth Vest to match, bound with narrow silk braid ; a pair of flannel Drawers ; a pair of Socks ; a large pocket Kerchief; and an albert hair Guard, with gold plated locket, runner, and bar, loose twisted pattern. By G. CLIFTON, alias C. BROWN, a painter, who stated that he belonged to a small village near Bristol, and has received several letters bearing the Bristol, Cardiff, and Pontypridd post marks, and received a Post Office order a few days ago from Pyr Phil, Glamorganshire ; he is about 20 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, medium build, light complexion, round full face, regular features, light hair parted in the centre, DO beard OI moustache, and had a few blotches on his face ; dressed in dark striped tweed trousers and vest, and is supposed to be wearing the stolen coat and boots, as he left his own behind. Information to be given to Superintendent Egerton, Cheshire Constabulary, County Hall, Birkenhead, who holds a warrant for his apprehension— Bow- street, De ' • 14. and 68, Stepney ' Green, wooll- sn merchant and clothier, 50 years of age, 5 feet < 7 £ inches high, black hair, whiskers, and moustache, thin . pale face, long nose, stoops, and is inkneed ; generally wears a broafl brimmed high black hat; and ABRAHAM PHILIP BENJAMIN, a Jew, about 22 yrs. of age, 5 feet " 8 inches high, dark hair, eyes, and complexion, dark moustache and - small whiskers by the side of his ears, beard shaven off. £ 150 reward will be paid for their appre- hension and conviction. Information to be given to In- spector Bailey, ( City of London Police, Detective Department, 26, Old Jewry, E. C.— Bow- street, December 18. Description of a man who obtained a Watch and £ 3 by giving a cheque for £ 12 upon the Royal Bank of Scotland, Edinburgh, dated 17th November, 1874, where there were no effects ; the cheque is payable to Ernest Seymour or order, and signed by P. de Medewe : about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, medium build, dark hair, rather red, very pale complexion; dressed in light check coat and trousers, sealskin vest, dark overcoat, and black felt hat. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Leeds, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, December 18. MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATIONS. Description of two tramps committed for trial at the Wilts Quarter Sessions, Devizes, on the 5th proximo, charged with, stealing Money: WILLIAM HILL, a native of Bromyard, Hereford, 42 years of age, 5 feet inches high, brown mark on right side of face, ruptured on right side, ' D' on left side; dressed in old dark cloth jacket, and white slop underneath, alpaca vest, two pairs of trousers— one dark striped cloth, the other corduroy, lace- up boots with eyelet holes, and black bowler hat; states he served in the 23rd Foot. And MARY ANN HILL, his wife, 34 years of age, 5 feet high, fresh complexion, brown hair, and has lost several upper front teeth ; dressed in a light print dress, white apron, old red neckerchief, with small white spots, old dirty muffler, puce coloured jacket, black bonnet with coloured strings, and strong lace- up boots with ejelet- holes. Alio description of WILLIAM KELLEY, a labourer and tramp, who is in custody at Swindon, charged with stealing goods from shop fronts.
