CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received in eases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and agav, Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. Offences who are known hit not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress* Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as that lias been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 5604 WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 16, 1874. Wotlce.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE G AZETTE may be made and addressed to the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is gives, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, ail letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. The Names and Descriptions of Deserters from the Army, and of Absentees and Deserters from the Militia, should be forwarded en War Office Forms 88 and 88A, to the Editor, as above, for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING Description of JOHN MORAN, against whom a warrant has been issued, charging him with the wilful murder of Charles Langley, alias Rough Charlie, who died on the 2nd instant, from the effects of an assault committed upon him by Moran on the 26 th ult., on which date Moran absconded : about 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, ruddy com- plexion, round features, brown hair, cut short, sear on left cheekbone, and clean shaved ; dressed usually as a horse dealer, which occupation he follows ; he is well known at the principal markets and fairs in the kingdom, and has also been engaged in England and Ireland as a trotting match rider. It is supposed that h'e Will endeavour to emigrate. Information to be given to Chief Constable Glossop, Police Office, Birmingham.— Bow- street, December 9. FORGERY. Charged on a warrant with forgery and embezzlement of upwards of £ 400 : TIMOTHY PRICE, a clerk, 23 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, very light hair, no beard or whiskers, dimple in the chin ; dressed in black aud mixture check suit, black billycock hat, and long blue- black witney overcoat, with velvet collar ; he lately resided at 10, Victoria- street, Hulme, and left Manchester on the morning of the 28th ultimo; he will probably endeavour to leave the country. A reward of £ 20 will be paid upon his apprehen- sion and recovery of the money, or in proportion to the amount recovered. Information to be given at the Detective Office, Cheapside, Manchester.— Bow- street, Decembet 7. On the 6th instant, between 6 and 8 p. m., the house o Mr. John Jobling, grocer, of Ludworth, in the parish o* Shadforth, Durham, was broken and entered and stolen therein : a gold stop Watch, No. 45665, white dial, black figures, chronometer balance, had attached a gold Albert, curb pattern, and a Half- eagle ( American coin) ; also a Cash- box, containing gold Finger and Ear Rings. Information to be given to Superintendent Dunn, Constabulary Office, Dur- ham, or to Superintendent Scott, Castle Eden, Durham.— Bow- stree*, December 9. Stolen on the night of the 3rd instant, from the parish of Bregstock, the property of Mr. W. K. Gadsby, grocer, by housebreaking: a new rough brown cloth Overcoat, black velvet collar, lined with violet and blaek striped flannel, two side pockets with flaps, a small ticket pocket, and a pocket inside left breast, four brown bone buttifns on each side, and two small ones on each cuff; a short black and white mixture tweed Coat, two pockets outside, and one in left breast, two black bone buttons in front, two behind and two small ones on each cuff; about one dozen pairs of worsted Gloves, various sizes ; 21 bs. of Shag Tobacco; and 7s. in Coppers. Information to be given to Superintendent Noble, Onndle, or to Inspector Kitchen, Thrapston, Northamptonshire.— Bow- street, December 9. Between 4 and 7 p. m. on the 6th instant, the dwelling- house of Mrs. Mann, at Aylesbury, was entered by means of false keys, and stolen therein : four old- fashioned Tea Spoons, marked ' C. W. M.' Also between noon and 8 p. m., the shop of Miss Stevens, at Aylesbury, was entered by false keys, and stolen therein : a gold Pencil- case; a lady's imitation gold Guard Chain; 10s. in Silver and Copper; two Bottles, containing mixed Sweets; and two Pork Pies. Supposed by two men, one from 45 to 50 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark hair and whiskers, and no moustache ; dressed in a brown over- coat, black trousers, much worn, and hat. The other 28 yrs. of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high ; dressed in dark overcoat, black trousers and hat. Both had the appearance of mechanics. Information to be given to Superintendent Denson, Aylesbury, Bucks.— Bow- street, December 9. Ou the night of the 2nd instant, the house of Mr. W. Maulton, farmer, o£ Alkmonton, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a silver lever Watch, maker Davenport, Ashbourne, No. 5273, nearly new, has a piece broken off the hour hand, had attached a long German silyer Guard and steel Albert, curb pattern, a Sixpence, 4d. Piece, two wateh Keys, aud a Shell; a silver verge Wateh, maker Niveton, London, with open face and Arabic figures, it has also a piece broken off the hour hand, had attached a steel albert Chain, with a 4d. Piece, watch Key, and email Seal with green stone. A reward of £ 1 will be paid on conviction of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the stolen property. Information to be given to Superintendent Whieldon, Coustabulary Office, Ashbourne, Derby.— Bmu- st., December 9. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of a gentleman in Sunderland, on the evening of the 11th instant: a gold lever Watch, No. 12344, maker Marshall, Sunderland. Supposed by a tall woman, dressed in dark clothes. Information to be given to Chief Constable Stainsby, Sunderland, Durham.— Boa- nreet, December 14. attached to coat. Information to be given to Superintendent Waghorn, Hailsham, Sussex, or at the Chief Constable's Office, Lewes.— Bow- street, December 11. Stolen during the night of 6th instant, from a meadow at Chevening, near Sevenoaks : a brown mare Cob, 14 hands high, 5 years old, rough coat, and in good condition ; also a lighter brown Pony, 12 hands high, 5 years old, white mark in forehead, a letter on one side, supposed ' F.', rough c< Tat, in good condition. Information to be given to Superintendent O'Kill, Police Court, Sevenoaks, Kent.— Bow- street, Dec. 9. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Stolen on the 7th inst,, from Clare- terrace, Kensington : a gold Geneva Watch ; three small Keys ; a gold Pin, set with large pearl, small gold chain attached ; a ditto, turquoise and pearls, two Garnets ; five gold Brooches ( one ruby and garnets, one set with large garnets, one set with three small garnets, two cornelian) ; a small tortoiseshell and gold Box ; ten gold Rings ( one set with hair and emeralds, one chased keeper, one wedding, one opal, two set with two amethysts, one pearl, one round, one sapphire, one with three compart- ments for hair) ; and £ 1 10s. in Gold. By a man, 25 years of age, medium height, sallow complexion, dark hair cut short, grey eyes, small features, slight figure ; wore a dark overcoat.— Metropolitan Police, T Division, December 16. Absconded on the 12th instant, stealing £ 3 18s. 6d., the moneys of his employer : a youth, 18 years of age, 5 feet high, fair complexion, dark hair ; dressed in dark blue pilot jacket, dark striped trousers, and black deerstalker hat.— — Metropolitan Police, E Division, December 16. Description of a tramping glass and china mender, who is charged with stealing an iced glass Comport, an engraved flower Vase, and a glass Tumbler, the property of Charles William Hind, at Gainsborough, on the 5th instant: 45 to 60 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fair complexion, light hair and whiskers, which are turning grey ; dressed in black coat and high' silk hat, and carried a large bass, containing his tools; he is supposed to be a native of Yorkshire, and to reside in some part of that county when not on tramp. In- formation to be given to Superintendent Truelove, County Police Station, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, December 16. Absconded from Linslade, on the 8th instant, charged with stealing eight quarters of Wheat and one quarter of Beans, the property of Thomas Birdsey, his master : EDMD. HEDGES, farm bailiff, 34 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair and whiskers ; dressed in dark clothes, brown overcoat, billycock hat, and white neckerchief. Supposed to be about Islington, and was 9 years an omnibus conductor in Islington, London, and left about 4 years ago ; he is supposed to be known at the Cattle Market. Informa- tion to be given to Inspector Sapwell, Police Station, Linslade, Bucks, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. - Bow- street, December 14. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. During the night of the 11th instant, the Cooperative Stores in Tweedale- street, Rochdale, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : 8 lbs. of twist Tobacco, 8 lbs. of Cheese, 12 yards of red Flannel, 6 yards of blue ditto, a blue and white bed Quilt, and three small shoulder Shawls, mixed colours. Information to be given to Chief Constable Stevens, Town Hall, Rochdale, Lancashire.— Bow- street, December 16. Stolen by means of housebreaking during the night of the 10th instant, at Meriden : three pairs of plated Nut Crackers ; one silver Salt Spoon; one pair of men's side- spring Boots, new ; one cloth Jacket; two pairs of cloth Trousers ; and one piece of Cloth; the trousers, jacket, and cloth were found pledged in Birmingham. The offence is supposed to have been committed by two tramps— one about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, ruddy complexion, sandy moustache, no whiskers, and respectably dressed in dark clothes ; the other, about 60 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark complexion, and black whiskers all round his face ; shabbily dressed, and both supposed to be Germans. Information to be given to Inspector Thomas, Constabulary Station, Coleshill, Warwickshire.— Bow- street, December 14, During the night of the 8th instant, the dwelling- house of John Porter, farmer, of Fletching, Sussex, was broken and entered, aud stolen therein : a silver table Spoon, marked ' W. E. J.'; a plated Fork, marked ' P.'; a double- barrel Gun ; a pair of worsted Gloves; a common clasp Purse, containing Half Crown ; a cigar Box, containing a few Cigars ; a quantity of cooked Meat; a small flitch of Bacon ; and a brown alpaca Umbrella. Information to be given to Superintendent Peerless, Uckfield, Sussex, or at any Police Station in East Sussex.— Bow- street, December 11. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Description of JAMES FORD, who is charged at Northampton with stealing six Heifers and a Cow, recovered, the property of Mr. Henry Mobbs, Billing- road, on the 5th instant: about 65 years of age, about; 5 feet 6 inches high, sharp featvires, proportionate build, sandy hair and whiskers, turning grey ; dressed in a long drab overcoat, old silk hat, and leather gaiters ; he speaks slowly, and has a very whiniug voice ; he has a relative residing at Coldesden, Bedfordshire, where he may probably go. Information to be given to Chief Constable Keenan, Northampton, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, December 16. Stolen from Morehampton Park, about the 11th instant, the property of Mr. Tomson : three Hereford Heifers, coming 2 years old, in calf, one with a drooping horn, and one has a deal of white about her. Information to be given to Mr. Tomson, or to Superintendent Tanner, Abbey Dore, Hereford.— Bow street, December 16. Stolen during the night of the 27tb ultimo, from a field at Buttington, near Welshpool: a bay mare Pony, about 12J hands high, aged, black legs, Und tail cut square just above the hocks. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Newtown, or to Police Constable Thomas, Buttington, Welshpool, Montgomeryshire.— Bow- st., Dec. 14. Stolen from Basingstoke, on the night of the 6th instant, the property of Mr. W. Connor, butcher : an aged roan- coloured Pony, a Gelding, about 12 hands high, with scars on knees. Information to be given to Head Constable Hibberd, Basingstoke. Hants.— Bow- street, December 11. Stolen at Heathfield, Sussex, on the night of the 8th instant; a roan mare Pony, black mane and tail, 7 years old, with a slit in the near ear, about 12^ hands high, has not been clipped, and is in good condition ; also a Cart, painted chocolate, with leather cushions ; and a set of brass- mounted Harness. Supposed by two men, one about 24 years of age, 5 feet 8^ inches high, full face, rather pale complexion, light brown hair, no whiskers, slight moustache, rather stout figure, aud slightly in- kneed ; dressed in dark overcoat, light trousers, and dark low- crowned hat; the other about 18 yrs, of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, full face, florid complexion, light brown hair, no whiskers or moustache, prominent nose, and stout figure; dressed iu dark rough overcoat, light brown trousers, and black billycock hat, with a piece of elastic Description of JAMES R. SMITH, charged on warran with stealing, on the 18th October last, a £ 10 Bank o England Note, the property of William Edward Spencer: 21 years of age, 5 feet inches high, rather full face, grey and full eyes, upper lids rather inflamed, dark brown hair, no whiskers beard or moustache, scrofula scars under right ear jaw and chin. Information to be given to Chief Constable Farndale, Town Hall, Leicester.— Bow- street, December 14. Description of GEORGE LITFORD, who is charged ( with two others in custody) with having, on the night of the 22nd ultimo, broken and entered the dwelling- house of John Wright, of Minchinhampton, and stolen therein £ 23 12s. 6d. in Gold and Silver and two silver Watches and a silver Guard ( one of which has since been recovered): he is from 25 to 28 years of age, about 5 feet 11 inches high, pale com- plexion, and eruption on face ; dressed in shabby clothes and heavy boots ; he generally works as a deal springer, and had for some time previous to the 5th instant lodged in the Pithay, Bristol. Information to be given to Superintendent Hanbidge, Stroud, Gloucestershire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, December 14. Stolen from a dwelling- house in Tranmere, on the morning of the 11th instant: a pair of elastic- side pegged Boots, nearly new, ' Maker Atkin, Birkenhead,' stamped under instep ; a pilot or rough cloth . Jacket, has been turned, woollen lining, with red stripe; a grey tweed Suit, maker's name on loop inside collar and on buttons, ' Myers & Co.;' a pair of black Trousers, fly fronts, no linings, nearly new, maker's name on buttons, ' Deakin, Rock Ferry;' a double- breasted black cloth Vest to match, bound with narrow silk braid ; a pair of flannel Drawers ; a pair of Socks ; a large pocket Kerchief; and an albert hair Guard, with gold plated locket, runner, and bar, loose twisted pattern. By G. CLIFTON, alias C. BROWN, a painter, who stated that he belonged to a small village near Bristol, and has received several letters bearing the Bristol, Cardiff, and Pontypridd post marks, and received a Post Office order a few days ago from Pyr Phil, Glamorganshire ; he is about 20 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, medium build, light complexion, round full face, regular features, light hair parted in the centre, no beard oi moustache, and had a few blotches on bis face ; dressed in dark striped tweed trousers and vest, and is supposed to be wearing the stolen coat and boots, as he left his own behind. Stolen between 5' 15 and 5" 45 p. m. on the 8th instant, from a stable near Hobb Hill, Saltburn- by- the- Sea, the pro- perty of Messrs. Pease and Company : two horse Rugs, one hood, and one surcingle, one of the rugs has been torn near the middle and mended with blue worsted, the other has a hole in the corner, they are both grey in the middle, and have bine and red stripes at the sides, the hood is a light- coloured plaid, bound round with red. Supposed by tramps. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Prest, North Riding Constabulary, Guisborough.— Bow- street, December 11. Absconded from Barnstaple on the 25th ultimo, WM. BRIGHT, charged with stealing Turkeys from a farmyard: he is 23 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, pale complexion, dark hair, no whiskers, mole on left jaw, and rather long features ; dressed in fustian trousers, brown overcoat, and wears a belt with a large clasp ; he is a miner, but has lately worked in the Steel Works, Swansea. A warrant is issued for his appreheneson. Information to be given to Head Constable Longhurst, Barnstaple, Devonshire.— Bow- street, December 11. Stolen from Birkenhead, on the 9th instant: a lady's black imitation seal- skin Jacket, trimmed with light imitation seal- skin. By a man about 25 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, no whiskers or moustache, dark complexion, medium build ; dressed in black frock coat, black and white check trousers, and felt hat. Information to be given at the Police Office, Town Hall, Birkenhead, Cheshire. — Bow- street, Dec- mber 11. Absconded from Llanisben, near Cardiff, on the 21st ultimo, charged with stealing two Turkeys, the property of Mr. Isaac Bryant, farmer, Llanishen: WM. CLARKE;, alias BILL CATCH'EM, about 50 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, fresh complexion, grey eyes, dark brown hair and whiskers, turning grey, large mouth, and splay- footed ; dressed in old brown coat or slop, moleskin trousers, and clogs. He travels about selling clotiaes props, & c. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Matthews, Pontypridd, Glamorganshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. - Bow- street, December 11. Description of a soldier named REUBEN HORNER, a deserter from the 1st Battalion 19th Foot, now lying at Weedon, who absconded from Northampton, charged with stealing on the 6th instant, from a bedroom in the houae of Henry Jackson, beer retailer, Woolmonger- street, a black cloth Jacket, with pockets outside, and lined with black lining ; a brown cloth Yest, with light- coloured stripes; a brown cloth Overcoat, with woollen plaid lining, pockets out- side, and a small hole burnt through the right pocket; a silver Geneva Watch, seconds hand, glass cracked across, a piece of red flannel inside the case, No. 14433; and a horse- hair albert Watch Guard, with gold plaited horn attached at the end; the property of Joseph Aldridge, a lodger in the above house : Horner is about 25 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, round full face, no whiskers or moustache ; dressed in the stolen clothes. Information to be given to Chief Constable Keenan, Northampton, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, December 11. Absconded from Chetwynd, on the 4th instant, charged with stealing lllbs. of Meal; and 18 lbs. of Potatoes, the property of J. C. B. Borough, Esq. : GEO. BAILEY, about 40 years of age, 5 feet II inches high, dark hair and com- plexion, grey eyes, and blinks a little, thin face, right cheek rather swollen, and round shouldered ; he has worked at coal or iron works at Wednesbury, for the last 4 years he has been employed as foreman at Chetwynd Park. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Richardson, Wellington, Salop, or to Sergeant Christie, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, December 9. Description of a woman who absconded from Redcar- by- the- Sea, on the 2nd instant, charged with stealing : one pair of gold Ear- rings, oval shape, about 1 inch long with a drop in the centre, and a small fringe at the bottom ; also one mauve- coloured rep dress Skirt, with flounce about one foot from the bottom, and trimmed with a darker mauve braid, nearly new, the property of Joseph Hutchinson, of the same place ; 27 years of age, 5 feet 1 or 2 inches high, fresh com- plexion, dark brown hair, wears a wig, and a stout figure ; dressed in a light print dress, grey plaid sbawl, black bonnet trimmed with blue ribbon, old elastic- side boots, and supposed to be wearing the stolen Skirt. She wears her bonnet on the front part of her head. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Prest, North Riding Constabulary Office, Guisbro', Yorkshire, or to Sergeant Alexander, Police Office, Redcar.— Bow- street, December 9. Description of JOHN GARDINER, of Leominster, a drainer, charged with larceny : he is about 47 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, dark brown hair, sandy whiskers, florid complexion, and walks stiffly ; dressed in dark soft billycock hat, dark monkey jacket, has been patched in the back with blue cloth, which covers the middle seam between the shoulders, cord trousers, red from working iu the clay, all much worn, and very old boots. Information to be given to Superintendent Johnson, Leominster, Herefordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprthension.— Bow- street, Decem- ber 9. Absconded from Axminster, Devon, on the 26th October last, charged with stealing a Gun, Powder Flask, and Shot Bag ( all recovered) : ABEL BEER, a labourer, and a native of Uplyme, Devon, about 17 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, rather dark complexion, dark brown hair, sharp thin features, stoops a little, and has a heavy slouching appear- ance ; dressed in a light jacket, dark corduroy trousers, and soft billycock hat; he will probably be found working for dairymen or cheese dealers. Information to be given to Superintendent Barber, D Division, Devon Constabulary, Honiton, or to Seageant Pike, Devon Constabulary, Ax- minster, who holds-* warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, December 9. Description of DAVID PULLAR, spirit merchant's traveller, who absconded on the 19th of October last, charged with embezzling various sums of Money, belonging to Messrs. Fisher and Stewart, spirit merchants, Whitehaven : about 27 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, a native of Perth, ruddy complexion, somewhat flushed, good looking, very smart, walks quickly, small whiskers, shaved on chin, rather red moustache, and stout figure ; may be dressed in brown or grey tweed suit, and black felt hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Bertram, Constabulary Office, White haven, who holds a warrant for his apprehension, and by whom £ 2 reward will be paid.— Bow- street, December 9. Description cf a man named WILLIAM GARSED, clerk, who is charged, at Northampton, with embezzling £ 3 10s., the moneys of Messrs. Rice and Co., ironfounders about 35 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, red face, large red nose, dark hair and whiskers, bald on top of head, an awkward rolling gait, and has a green ring round the pupils of his eyes, which gives him a very peculiar look; dressed in a black billycock hat, old greasy grey mixture jacket, black cloth trousers, nearly new, lace- up boots, and a paper collar without a necktie. He has been employed at Cardiff, Birmingham, and Wallingford. Information to be given to Chief Constable Keenan, Northampton, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, December 9. She was convicted at Taunton Assizes on the 11th December, 1868, and sentenced to 7 years penal servitude.
