C. *#* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement,, forwarded to the Editor for nsertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any aitiele in the POLICE GAZETTE, all tetters addressed to the Editor ill list be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will notbe made. It is requested that the names and Descriptions of Deserteri and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without fais authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING- Henry Cross, labourer, 23 years of age, of No. 37, Byron- street, Barrew- in- Furness, was found near the Derby Arms Hotel, Dalton- strect, Barrow- in- Furness, at 11T5 p. m., on the 5th instant, with three large wounds on the head, from the effects of which he died on the 9th instant, and at the inquest a verdict of ' Wilful Murder' was returned against some person or persons unknown. Three men and two women are supposed to have been concerned in the murder. A reward • of .£ 100 will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person who shall give such information and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murderer or mur- derers ; and the Secretary of State for the Home Department will advise the grant of Her Majesty's Gracious Pardon to any accomplice, not being the actual murderer. Information to be given to Chief Constable Bruce, Preston, to Superin- tendent Holden, Ulverston, to Inspector Barker, Barrow- in- Furness, or at any of the Police Stations in the said county of . Lancaster.— Bow- street, September 25. whiskers, and clean chin ; dressed in dark billycock hat and dark clothes; he has the appearance of a black smith or striker, and frequents low beer and lodging houses. Two of the stolen spoons werd' sold by him at Gloucester on the morning of the 22nd instant. Information to be given to Superintendent Day, Cheltenham, Gloucestesshire.— Bow- street, September 25. Stolen by means of housebreaking, between 8 a. m. and 6 p. m. on the 17th instant, in the parish of Catsfield, Sussex: a dark blue pilot monkey Jacket, velvet collar, with pockets at sides, and one inside left breast; and a pair of light diab cloth trousers, repaired in the seat, fly fronts. Supposed by a tramp, about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 1 inches, high, few light sandy whiskers, medium figure; dressed in dirty white slop, old dirty dark trousers, large light neck wrapper, black billycock hat, and heavy boots. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Lewes, or to Superin- tendent Jenner, Court House, Battle, Sussex.— Bmo- street, September 25. Between 1 and 2 p. m. on the 21st instant the cottage of Ann Holland, parish of Stoke Lacy, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a pair of men's watertight Boots, bottom of tongues cut, and pieces let in; a pair of cotton cord Trousers, fall fronts, the lining cut out and left behind ; a black cloth Waistcoat, buttons up to the chin ; a man's check Shirt; a Slop, single back, and a red bundle Handkerchief, with a spot in the middle. Supposed by a tramp, about 27 years of age, 5 feet C or 7 inches high, light complexion ; he was traced to Pembridge, and was wearing the boots, trousers, waistcoat, and shirt. Information to be given to Superintendent Harwood, Bromyard, Herefordshire.— Bow- street, September 25. Between 5 and 10 a. m. on the 10th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. Thomas Hawkins, of flievaulx, near Helmsley, North Biding of Yorkshire, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a black cloth Coat, single- breasted, fitting tight, one pocket inside left breast, top button- hole tern, and cuff's lined with red ; a b'ack cloth Coat, double- breasted, two pockets outside, and one inside left breast, wide sleeves ; a dark blue rough Topcoat, with velvet collar, a loop to hang it up by, two pockets in laps behind ; a grey short Coat; a black cloth Vest, double- breasted, lined with yellow, a hole burnt through below the right pocket; a single- breasted pepper- and- salt- coloured Vest; a pair of black cloth Trousers, fall fronts, bottoms bound round with black braid ; a pair of light grey Trousers, fall frants ; a pair of printed moleskin Trousers, black and yellow stripes ; and a pair of lace- up Boots, patent facings, punch holes at toes, imitating perforated toe- caps. By a man from 45 to 50 years of age, 5 feet S or 9 inches high, stout and strong build, walks erect, fresh com- plexiou, rather broad features, ginger bushy whiskers on sides of face ; dressed in a brown rough short cloth coat, snuff- coloured cord trousers, black soft billycock hat, necker- chief tied in a knot at front, and very heavy boots ; he had the appearance of a tramping navvy. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Between 6 a. m. and 6 p. m. on the 21st instant, the house of Charles Clover, at Northfleet, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a monkey Jacket, a black cloth Vest, a black Shawl, and a Nightgown. Between 7 and 11 a. m. on the 24th instant, thedwelling- " house of Thomas Bennett, of Cuxton, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a pair of blueher Boots ; a black cloth Vest; a figured silk ditto ; two grey cloth ditto ; two pairs of black cloth Trousers ; and two blue bundle Handkerchiefs. By a man about 27 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 iuches high, black hair and moustache; dressed in moleskin trousers, monkey jacket, blue guernsey, and cheese- cutter cap. Stolen at Cheltenham, on the night of. the 21st instant, by means of burglary : four Tea Spoons and a pair of Sugar Tongs, all silver, and marked ' H. E. B.;' a large wooden Pipe, with black skin ; a child's Writing Desk ; and a gentle- man's dark grey waterproof Coat, with two outside pockets. By a man ( supposed to be an Irishman) between 40 and 50 years of age, short and stout, dark hair, dark sandy bushy Between 1' 30 and 4' 30 p. m. on the 16th instant, the dwelling- house of John Quinton, of Kilham- terrace, Balby- with- Hexthorpe, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a gold Geneva Watch, No. 18644, wish gold double- link Guard aud Key, with ' Fretwell, Doncaster, 1874' on it; a silver lever Watch, No. 15158, two dents on back, and seconds broken ; a £ b Bank of England Note, No. 1048; two £ 5 Notes of Beckett's Bank, on » No. 408 ; six Sovereigns ; and a Half- sovereign. Also, between 1 and 3 p. m. on the 16th instant, the dwelling- house of George Butler, of Kilham- terrace, Balby with- Hexthorpe, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a small silver verge Watch, nearly new, engine- turned cases, white dial, with dark hands, ' J. Faiss, Doncaster,' on dial, and had a gold plated Guard attached ; and a gold dress King, witli five green stones in centre. Information to be given to Superintendent Astwood, West riding Constabulary, Doncaster, or to Inspector Shepley, West Riding Constabulary, Balby, near Doncj. ster.— Boxo- street, September 21, Stolen from the dwelling- house of Reuben Edwards, of Etchingham, by means of housebreaking, on the 14th instant, between 7- 30 a. m. and 4- 30 p. m. : £ 10 19s. in Gold and Silver; and two Brooches— one black ivory, bird in centre, the other brown, with Forget- me- not, the property of Reuben Edwards ; £ 64 10s. iu Gold; an old- fashioned silver verge Watch, figures in face, and a small piece broken out; and a gold verge Watch, single case, and a female figure engraved on back, the property of Albert Haylor ; also, an old- fashioned silver verge Watch, No. 1627, maker Ray, Bury St. Edmund's. Supposed by two men— one 22 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, fair complexion, small whiskers, and light moustache ; dressed in black coat and trousers, grG& sy iv1j knees, black billycock hat; the other, 40 years of age, 5 feet C or 7 inches high, dark complexion, stout figure, broad shoulders, large whiskers and moustache ; dressed in dark great coat, and billycock hat. Between 10 a. m. and 6 p. m. on the 15th instant, the dwelliDg- house of John Youseman, at Clitte, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a black cloth Coat, watered silk facings, pockets al hips, bound with braid ; a double- breasted HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Description of a man apprehended © a. the 19th instani, in Chester, charged with stealing a valuable. Msure, at 5 o'cloisi the same morning, from a field near Crewe ; he had tie mare in his possession : he gives the name of RICHARD RIMMER, labourer, a native of Southport, 22 years of age, feet 6 iuches high, light brown hair, grey eyes, fresh plexion, has three moles on neck, and clean shaved ; drisaed in a black cloth jacket, pocket outside aash skirt, bound, with black silk brcid, worn off the front, a black cloth cohered button in tho front, and two ditto on the back, drafc and black striped, cloth waistcoat, black horn buttons, a pair of moleskin trousers, yellow and grey plaid gingham shk ^ pink and white plaided woollen scarf round his neck, blask. billy- cock hat, and strong lace- up boots ; he states that he has worked at the Chatterley Iron Works, Tunstall, for £ . months and left there on the 18th instant; he previously worked in the New Railway, in Chester. Stolen from a field, Paslow Wood Common, high Ongar, on the night of the 10th or morning of the 1 lih instant, the property of Mrs. Susan. Stolen from a field in Wistaston, about 5 a. m. on the 19th instant: a dark brown M'ire, 3 years old, 15 hands high, black fore legs, white hind feet, light legs, heavy body, and in good condition. A youryj man was seen taking fcer towards Naatwich, about 5 o'clock the same ^ lorfiing as she was stolen. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Description of a female servant who absconded i.- om the service of the Rev. — Brass, of Station- road, Redhill, on the 28th nit., charged with stealing Wearing Apparel : 34 years of age, of middle stature, light brown hair, sallow complexion, high cheekbones, rather blotched lace, grey eyes, with a downcast look, and rather aquiline nose ; she was hist seen near London Bridge, dressed in black, with a black bonnet, trimmed with blue flowers ; she is supposed to be residing near the Queen's- road, Peckham. Information to be given to Head Constable Rogers, Police Station, Redhill, Surrey.— Bow- sired, September 25. Description ot GEORGE SMITH, alias PEG, charged with stealing Hay, in company of auother man, who is com- mitted for trial at the next quarter sessions, at Maidstone, and for whose apprehension a warrant is issued : he is from 45 to 50 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, whiskers sha- v ed off', and stoops a little ; dressed in old brown coat, cord trousers, dark vest, and black billycock hat ; his wife aud family live in John- street, Deptford, aud it is supposed that lie is about Whitechapel with hay dealers. September 25 Stolen from the King's Head Inn, Wateringbury, Kent, on the 19th instant, the property of John Evans : one pair dark tweed Trousers, oua black cloth pilot Coat with velvet collar, one black silk Handkerchief, and one pair light lace- up Boots, without nails. By JOHN BLACK, alias GINGER, who lodged in the house, 23 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, sandy hair and moustache, no whiskers, has a small lump over right eye and lump on top of head ; dressed iu white slop, grey trousers, lace- up boots, and black cap with flat crown and knob on the top. He is a native of Ely, Cam bridgeshire ; has been employed iu Spitalfields Market, idso at a lucifer- match factory, aud at a white- lead factory, at Bow. Information to be giveu to Superintendent Hulse, Kent Constabulary, West Mailing, near Maidstone, Kent.— Boxo- street, September 23. WILLIAM HENRY STRINGER, described in Police Gazette of the 2Lt instant, charged with stealing a suit of Clothes, & a, from the billiard- room at the Spread Eagle, Thame, has been apprehended and remanded at Oxford until the 26th instant.— Bou- sirtet, September 25. Further particulars respecting MARTHA LUSTED, who is charged with stealing a Watch at Tunbridge Wells, as advertised in the Police Gazette of the 7th ultimo : she is a native of Battle, Sussex, about 20 years of age, tall and thin, brown hair, blue eyes, fresh complex ion, has a large scar from burn on right arm, and scar from boil on left hand. She was convicted at Hastings Boiough Sessions on tho 16th July, 1S72, of felony and fraud, and sentenced to five weeks hard labour and five years in the Devon aud Exeter Girls' Reformatory, and was discharged from thence iu November, 1873. Information to be giveu to Chief Constable Embery, Town Hall, Tunbridge Wells, Kent.— Bou:- atreet, September 25. Description of a man who absconded from Portsmouth on the 22nd instant, charged with stealing : two oval plated Cruet Stands, one for eight bottles, fan; y pattern, the other for four bottles, plain ; two small plated Salvers ; two white Shirts, men's; two Scarves, one violet, the other blue with white twigs; six pairs of Socks, three fancy stripe merino, the ether three grey ; a black silk Necktie ; six pairs of gen- tlemen's Cuffs, three reversible, the other three straight ; and three linen Collars. He ia about 25 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, dark brown hair, no whiskers or moustache, but sometimes wears large brown false ones, deep scrofula marks on lower part of both cheeks, small nose, and thick lips ; dressed in a high black hat with narrow blach ribbon, loose light cloth overcoat, grey mixture coat underneath, black cloth trousers and vest, aud had a black bag containing the stolen property. He visits places pretending to be seek- ing for lodgings. Information to be given to Head Constable Barber, Portsmouth, Hants.— Bow- street, Sept. 25. Stolen from New Inn, Llangranog, on the 13th instant, the property of Captain Jordan: a liver- coloured retriever Dog, about 11 months old, with a small lump inside the right hind leg, a little belew the joint, answers to the name of ' Jewy.' By a tramp, about 35 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, rather pale complexiou, and rather long narrow face, and had o. little hair about tho chin ; dressed iu canvas jacket, bla. k felt hat, and supposed moleskiu trousers, all dirty; he was traced . to Narberth, Pembrokeshire, where he offered the dog for sale ; he speaks Welsh aud English well. Information to be given to Superintendent L'. oyd, Llandyssil, Cardiganshire.— Bowstreet, September 23. A warrant has been issued against FRITZ KOPTSCH, for stealing £ 50 : he is 40 years of age, a shoe rivitter, about 5 feet 7 inches high, dark hair, inclined to grey, broad shoulders, flat forehead, wiry and rather dark moustache and beard, and scurvy on centre of upper lip ; dressed in a black frock coat, brown plush vest, dark grey trousers, and a soft high- crowned black felt hat. Information to be given to Sergeant Cole, Chief Constable's Office, Town Hall, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire.-- Bow- sUcet, September 23. Stolen at 2 p. m. on the 17th inst., from No. 1 Devereux- court, Strand : five 18- carat gold Rings, marked ' A. D. L.', hall marked, 1 lady's half hoop, carved, with one brilliant, two stones missing, unfinished, 2 brilliant and ruby, half hoop, 1 five- brilliant half hoop, 1 splint shank, no stone ; 1 brilliaut Pin Head, containing five brilliants, setting finished, outside very rough ; two Screw Boxes, each containing about seventy small rose diamonds; one painted enamel Figure, birder and coronet, in three pieces, all rose diamonds mounted ; two papers containing loose Turquoise ; one gold Brooch, setting for three stones, unfinished ; and some odd Gold. By a man, 36 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fallow complexion, dark hair, whiskers, beard, and moustache, stoops,, middle linger of left hand supposed contracted; dressed inta light brown sac Coat, and round felt hat; a German, and is likely to go to Paris or Germany. £ 10 reward will be paid on the apprehension of the offender and recovery of the property. <— Metropolitan. Description of a draper's assistant who has absconded from Maidstone, stealing £ 7 7s., the monies of his master : about 24 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, pale com- plexion, dark hair; dressed in black topcoat, dark trousers, high- crowned hat, aud carried an umbrella ; he is likely to go to America. Information to be given to Head Constable Gifford, Police Office, Maidstone, Kent.— Bow- st., Sept. 23. Charged on a warrant with stealing considerable sums of Money from the Savings Bank in Hawick : ANDREW SCOTT, lately an accountant and a native of Hawick, 35 years of age, 5 feet 6 iuches high, fair hair, light grey eyes, fresh complexion, fair whiskers ou cheeks ( thin) and under chin, marks of ulcers on neck, short aud badly formed feet ' one of them, supposed rifht, is drawn up at heel, causing him to walk on his toe3 and limp slightly), and of dissipated habits ; dressed in a dark tweed suit and black felt hat. A reward of £ 10 is offered in the name of the Sheriff of Roxburgh, Berwick, and Selkirk, to any person who shall gi / e such information to the Procurator- Fiscal of the county as shall lead to his apprehension, and a further reward of £ 10 ia also offered by the Trustees of the said Bauk, payable on his apprehension. Stolen from a dwelling- house at Livesey, bstween 9 a. m. and 6 p. m. on the 15th instant: £ 4 10& in Gold and 10s. 6d. in Silvef; a lady's silver Geneva Watch, with gold hinges, No. 3844, and Guard, but not attached to watch, as the fastening is broken, and a Coin like a half- sovereign attached. By a tramping weaver, about 33 years of age, 5 ft. 6 inches high, fair complexion, and sandy hair, has a burn raark on one bide of neck, one arm shorter than the other, walks straight, but holds his head on one side ; dresfed iu dark coat, dark striped trousers, Scotch cap with button on top, an 3 old shoes ; he frequents low beerhounes and common iodgiug- fcou- iea, Information to be given to Superintendent Read, County Police Office, Blackburn, Lancashire. - Bow- streit, September 21. Stolen from the dwelling- house of George Newman, Kington Magna, Dorset, on the 17th instant: two Skim Cheeses, about 20 lbs. each ; a blue rep Dress, trimmed with black ; a light Dress, trimmed with lace ; two Table Cloths ; a lady's double- breasted blue Jacket, black buttons; three pairs of white cotton Stockings; two ditto Drawers ; two Chemises ; a black lace Hat, trimmed with amber ribbon ; a black fancy Apron ; a Butter Cloth ; and a box of Ribbons, of various soits. By a man and woman : the man is 30 yrs. of age, 6 feet 1 inch high, sallow complexion, slender build, small daik moustache, no whiskers, and has been a soldier ; dressed in dark trousers and white slop.
