CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received in cases of Felony and of ^ Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed • Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the plaee, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. Notice.— It is requested that al communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature or the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MB. W. D. BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for nsertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the FOLICE GAZETTE, all tetters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the names and Descriptions of Deserter* and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. FORGERY. Absconded, charged with forgery : a man, 24 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, sallow complexion, dark hair, whiskers, and moustache ; generally dressed in dark clothes and high hat, and is of . respectable appearance.— Metropolitan Police, E Division, September 18. Description of ARTHUR FLOWER, for whose appre- hension a warrant is issued, charged with uttering a forged Cheque on the City Bank, Ludgate- hill Branch, at the parish of Heme, on the 24th July last: lie is about 38 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches or 6 feet high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair cut short, whiskers shaved off, thick browu moustache, stout build, near sighted, and wears glasses ; generally dresses in a suit of groy tweed and straw hat. Has resided for several summers at Herne Bay ; his brother, Alfred Flower, resides at 79, Mayall- road, Brixton. The cheque purports to be signed by Mardon and Mosley, Poultry, London, Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Walker, Kent Con- stabulary, Canterbury, or to Sergeant Kewell, Herne, near ' Canterbury.— Bow- st., September 14. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of a lady about 9 p. m. on the 11th instant, at Round Oak, Brierley Hill: a gold Geneva Watch, engine- turned, ' N. S.' engraved on the back. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Mills, Brierley Hill, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, September 16. Stolen from the person at Wilton Fair, on the 12th inst.: a gold engine- turned f- plate lever Watch, enamelled dial, sunk seconds, compensation balance, jewelled in ten holes, maker Saunders, Dorchester, No. 81836. Information to be given to Superintendent Wolfe, Fisherton, Salisbury, Wilts. — Bow- street, September 14. Stolen from the person in the borough of Middlesbrough on the 12th instant: an old red leather Purse, containing 14 £ 5 Notes of the Clydesdale Bank, also ten Sovereigns. Information to be given to Chief Constable Saggerson, Borough Police Station, Middlesbrough, Yorkshire,—- Bow- st., September 14. Stolen on the 7th instant, from the person of a gentleman whilst in St. Giles's Fair, Oxford : a gold Geneva hunting Watch, double dial, gold Chain attached, four short, four long links, with Turkish Coin appended. Information to be given to Superintendent Head, Oxford.— Bow- street, September 14. Stolen from the person of William Spayo, in Crewe Market, on the 12th instant: a silver verge Watch, No. 1263, lever pattern, minute hand broken ; had attached a small gold Guard, and a gold plated Seal, with a white stone in the centre. Information to be given to Superintendent Laxton, Nantwich, or to- Inspector Morris, Police Station, Crewe, Cheshire,— Bow- street, September 14. Between 5 and 10 a. m. on the 16th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. Thomas Hawkins, of Rievaulx, near Helmsley, North Riding of Yorkshire, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a black cloth Coat', single- breasted, fitting tight, one pocket inside left breast, top button- hole torn, and cuff's lined with red; a black cloth Coat, double- breasted, two pockets outside, and one inside left breast, wide sleeves ; a dark blue rough Topcoat, with velvet collar, a loop to hang it up by, two pockets in laps behind ; a grey short Coat; a black cloth Vest, double- breasted, lined with yellow, a hole burnt through below. the right pocket; a single- breasted pepper- and- salt- coloured Vest; a pair of black cloth Trousers, fall fronts, bottoms bound round with black braid ; a pair of light grey Trousers, fall fronts ; a pair of printed moleskin Trousers, black and yellow stripes ; and a pair of lace- up Boots, patent facings, punch holes at toes, imitating perforated toe- caps. By a man from 45 to 50 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, stout and strong build, walks erect, fresh com- plexion, rather broad features, ginger bushy whiskers on sides of face ; dressed in a brown rough short cloth coat, snuff- coloured cord trousers, black soft billycock hat, necker- chief tied in a knot at front, and very heavy boots ; he had the appearance of a tramping navvy. Information to be given to Superintendent Metcalf, Malton, or to Inspector Milner, North Riding Constabulary, Kirbymoorside,— Bow- street, September 21. Between l- 30 and 4* 30 p. m. on the 16th instant, the dwelling- house of John Quinton, of Kilham- terrace, Balby with- Hexthorpe, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a gold Geneva Watch, No. 18644, with gold double- link Guard and Key, with ' Fretwell, Doncaster, 1874' on it; a silver lover Watch, No. 15158, two dents on back, and seconds broken; a £ 5 Bank of England Note, No. 1048 ; two £ 5 Notes of Beckett's Bank, one No. 408 ; six Sovereigns ; and a Half- sovereign. Also, between 1 and 3 p. m. on the 16th instant, the dwelling- house of George Butler, © f Kilham- terrace, Balby- with- Hexthorpe, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a small silver verge Watch, nearly new, engine- turned cases, white dial, with dark hands, ' J. Faiss, Doncaster,' on dial, and had a gold plated Guard attached; and a gold dress Ring, with live green stones in centre. Information to be given to Superintendent Astwood, West Riding Constabulary, Doncaster, or to Inspector Shepley, West Riding Constabulary, Ballsy, near Doncaster.— Bow- street, September 21. Stolen from the dwelling- house of Reuben Edwards, of Etchingham, by means of housebreaking, on the 14th instant, between 7' 30 a. m. and 4' 30 p. m.: £ 10 19s. in Gold and Silver; and two Brooches— one black ivory, bird in centre, the other browD, with Forget- me- not, the property of Reuben Edwards ; £ 64 10s. in Gold; an old- fashioned silver verge Watch, figures in face, and a small piece broken out; and a gold verge Watch, single case, and a female figure engraved on back, the property of Albert Haylor ; also, an old- fashioned silver verge Watch, No. 1627, maker Ray, Bury St. Edmund's. Supposed by two men— one 22 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, fair complexion, small whiskers, and light ihoustache ; dreased in black coat and trousers, greasy at knees, black billycock hat; the other, 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark complexion, stout figure, broad shoulders, large whiskers and moustache ; dressed in dark great coat, and billycock hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Jenner, Battle, or to the Chief Constable's Office, Lewes, Sussex.- Bow- street, September 18. Between 10 a. m. and 6 p. m. on the 15th instant, the dwelling- house of John Youseman, at Cliffe, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a black cloth Coat, watered silk facings, pockets at hips, bound with braid ; a double- breasted black cloth Yest; a pair of black cloth Trousers, fall fronts ; a pair of brown Trousers, with small black stripes, fall fronts; and a grey cloth Overcoat. Information to be given to Superintendent Coppinger, Police Office, Chatham, Kent. — Bow- street, September 18. Between 11 p. m. the 13th instant, and 5 a. m. the 14th, the dwelling- house of Richard Wincott, of Guns- lane, West Bromwich, was entered by raising the sash of the back kitchen window, and the following articles stolen therefrom : one black cloth Jacket, man's size; one soft felt Hat; pair of elastic- side Boots, boy's size ; two pairs of carpet Slippers ; one Concertina ; two Antimacassas ; two Table'Cloths ; one damask Table Cover, blue and red ; two clothes Brushes and one hat Brush ; an alpaca Umbrella ; a black Cashmere Scarf Shawl; and one mauve and black wool Shawl. Information to be given to Sergeant Smith, Greet's Green, West Brom- wich, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, September 16. plexion, has three moles on neck, and clean shaved; dressed in a black cloth jacket, pocket outside each skirt, bound with black silk braid, worn off the front, a black cloth covered button in the front, and two ditto on the back, drab and black striped cloth waistcoat, black horn buttons, a pair of moleskin trousers, yellow and grey plaid gingham shirt, pink and white plaided woollen scarf round his neck, black billy- cock hat, and strong lace- up boots; he states that he has worked at the Chatterley Iron Works, Tunstall, for 6 months and left there on the 18th instant; he previously worked in the New Railway, in Chester. Information to be given to Superintendent Laxton, Nantwich, or to Inspector Morris, Crewe, Cheshire, who will send a photograph on application. - Bow- street, September 23. Stolen from a field, Paalow Wood Common, High Ongar, on the night of the 10th or morning of the 11th instant, the property of Mrs. Susan Oliver, shopkeeper : a brown entire Donkey, one hind shoe off, marked by the crupper under the tail, also a white mark on rump. By BENJAMIN CHARLES HOLGATE, late of No. 52, Rawstorne- street, Clerkenwell, confectioner: about 20 years of age, about 5 feet 2 inches high, sandy hair, pale complexion, freckled face; dressed in dark trousers, light waistcoat, brown felt hat, knocked in at the crown, black overcoat, and [ spring- side boots; he was last seen at No. 52, Rawstorne- street, Clerkenwell Information to be given to Superintendent Simpson, Epping, or to Inspector Robinson, Police Station, Chipping Ongar, Essex.— Bow- street, September 23. Stolen from a field in Wistaston, about 5 a. m. on the 19th instant: a dark brown Mare, 3 years old, 15 hands high, black fore legs, white bind feet, light legs, heavy body, and in good condition. A young man was seen taking her towards Nantwich, about 5 o'clock the same morning as she was stolen. Information to be given to Superintendent Laxton, Nantwich, or to Inspector Morris, Police Station, Crewe, Cheshire.,— Bow- street, September 21. Stolen on the 7th instant, from a field al Willesden : a brown Gelding, 7 years old, 16 hands 2 inches high, star on forehead off hind heel and foot white, slight ' surfeit' on skin; ami a bay Gelding, 4 years old off, 16 hands high, off fore and both hind heels white. £ 50 reward.— Metropolitan Police, X Division, September 18. Description of NICHOLAS CONGDEN, dealer, late of Landralce, Cornwall, charged with stealing a Horse on the th instant at Bickleigh, Devon, the property of Mr. Thomas Metters, farmer : he is about 40 years of age, about 5 feet inches high, thin face, dark complexion, dark hair, and long dark whiskers ; dressed when last seen in dark clothes and round pole bat; he may endeavour to embark for America, and is supposed to have got about £ 50 in his possession. The horse has been recovered. Information to be given to Super- intendent Brutton, H Division, Devon Constabulary, Stone- house.— Bow- street, September 16. Absconded from Wellingborough on the 7th instant, charged with stealing a Horse, Cart, and Harness ( since recovered), FREDERICK JACOBS, Clicker : he is absut 26 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, freckled face, pro- minent nose, large nostrils, large front teeth, sandy hair and whiskers ( about three weeks' growth), and very narrow fore- head) ; dressed in a dark coat, black and white check trousers, and a new black bard billycock hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Poole, Police Station, Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- street, September 16. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen by means of housebreaking, between 8 a. m. and 6 p. m. on the 17th instant, in the parish of Catsfield, Sussex: a dark blue pilot monkey Jacket, velvet collar, with pockets at sides, and one inside left breast; and a pair of light drab cloth trousers, repaired in the seat, fly fronts. Supposed by a tramp, about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, few light sandy whiskers, medium figure; dressed in dirty white slop, old dirty dark trousers, large light neck wrapper, black billycock hat, and heavy boots. Information to be ' given at the Chief Constable's Office, Lewes, or to Superin- tendent Jenner, Court House, Battle, Sussex,— Bow- street, September 23. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen from a field at Elmdon Hall, near Birmingham, on the 18th instant: a light chestnut nag Horse, 15^ hands high, rising 5 years old, has a white blaze down face and white hind feet. Information to be given to Superintendent Gallaway, Police Station, Aston Park, near Birmingham. Warwickshire.— Bow- street, September 23. Description ef a man apprehended on the 19th. instant, in Chester, charged with stealing a valuable Mare, at 5 o'clock the same morning, from a field near Crewe ; he had the mare in his possession : he gives the name of RICHARD RIMMER, labourer, a native of Southport, 22 years of age, 5 feet C inches high, light brown hair, grey eyes, fresh com LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Stolen from New Inn, Llangranog, on the 13th instant the property of Captain Jordan : a liver- coloured retriever Dog, about 11 months old, with a small lump inside the right hind leg, a little belsw the joint, answers to the namoof ' Jewy.' By a tramp, about 35 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, rather pale complexion, and rather long narrow- face, and had a little hair about the chin ; dressed in canvas jacket, black felt hat, and supposed moleskin trousers, all dirty ; he was traced to Narberth, Pembrokeshire, where he offered the dog for sale ; he speaks Welsh and English well. Information to be given to Superintendent Lloyd, Llandyssil, Cardiganshire.— Bowstreet, September 23. A warrant has been issued against FRITZ KOPTSCH, for stealing £ 50 : he is 40 years of age, a shoe rivitter, about 5 feet 7 inches high, dark hair, inclined to grey, broad shoulders, flat forehead, wiry and rather dark moustache and beard, and scurvy on centre of upper lip; dressed in a black frock coat, brown plush vest, dark grey trousers, and a soft high- crowned black felt hat. Information to be given to Sergeant Cole, Chief Constable's Office, Town Hall, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, September 23. Stolen at 2 p. m. on the 17th inst., from No. 1 Devereux- court, Strand : five 18- carat gold Rings, marked • A. D. L.', hall marked, 1 lady's half hoop, carved, with one brilliant, two stones missing, unfinished, 2 brilliant and ruby, haljE hoop, 1 five- brilliant half hoop, 1 splint shank, no stone ; 1 brilliant Pin Head, containing five brilliants, setting finished, outside very rough ; two Screw Boxes, each containing about seventy small rose ' diamonds; one painted enamel Figure, b » rder and coronet, in three pieces, all rose diamonds mounted ; two papers containing loose Turquoise ; one gold Brooch, setting for three stones, unfinished; and some odd Gold. By a man, 36 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, sallow complexion, 9, dark hair, whiskers, beard, and moustache, stoops, middle fiuger of left hand supposed contracted ; dressed in a light fcrown sac Coat, and round felt hat; a German, and is likely to go to Paris or Germany. £ 10 reward will be paid on the apprehension of the offender and recovery of the property. — Metropolitan Police, E Division, September 23. Description of a draper's assistant who has absconded from Maidstone, stealing £ 7 7s., the monies of his master : • about 24 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, pale com- plexion, dark hair; dressed in black topcoat, dark trousers, high- crowned hat, and carried an umbrella ; he is likely to . go to America. Information to be given to Head Constable Gifford, Police Office, Maidstone, Kent.— Bow- st., Sept. 23. Charged on a warrant with stealing considerable sums of Money from the Savings Bank in Hawick : ANDREW SCOTT, lately an Accountant and a native of Hawick, 35 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair hair, light grey • eyes, fresh comp whiskers on cheeks ( thin) and under chin, marks of ulcers on neck, short and badly formed feet ( one of them supp0sed rieht, is drawn up at heel, causing him to on jjis toes and limp slightly), and of dissipated habits ; dre3se( l £ n a dark tweed suit and black felt hat. A of £ 10 is offered in the name of the Sheriff of roxburgh, Berwick, and Selkirk, to any person who shall such information to the Procurator- Fiscal of the county as shall lead to his apprehension, and a further reward of £ 10 is also offered by the Trustees of the said Bank, payable on his apprehension. Information to be given at the Procu- rator- Fiscal's Office, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire.— Bow- street, September 23. Stolen from the billiard room at the Spread Eagle Hotel, Thame, during the night of the 15th instant, the property of Wm. Liddington : a suit of new Clothes, viz., a dark cloth Oxford Coat and Vest, dark brown Trousers, small check pattern, and a number of bronze Coins. By WILLIAM HENRY STRINGER, 16 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, fair complexion, hazel eyes, brown hair, and medium figure ; • dressed in the stolen suit and low shoes ; he was discharged from the ship ' Fisgard,' 18 Sept., 1873, from the ' Impreg- nable,' 25 Sept., 1873, from the ' Ganges,' 6 March, 1874, and • from Plymouth Hospital, 14 April, 1874, as unfit for further service at sea; he stated that he should go to Plymouth, and get on some merchant ship ; his friends reside at Lewisham, ' Kent, information to be given to Inspector Hawtin, Police Station, Thame, Oxon, who holds a warrant for his appre- hension.— Bow- street, September 21. Stolen from a dwelling- house at Livesey, between 9 a. m. and 6 p. m. on the 15th instant; £ 4 10s. in Gold and 10s. 6d. in Silver; a lady's silver Geneva Watch, with gold hinges, No. 3844, and Guard, but not attached to watch, as the Hastening is broken, and a Coin like a half- sovereign attached. By a tramping weaver, about 33 years of age, 5 ft. 6 inches high, fair complexion, and sandy hair, has a burn snark on one side of neck, one arm shorter than the other, Valks straight, but holds his head on one side ; dressed in dark coat, dark striped trousers, Scotch cap with button on top, and oJd shoes ; he frequents low beerhouses and common lodging- houses. Information to be given to Superintendent Read, County Police Office, Blackburn, Lancashire.— Bow- street, September 21. Stolen from the dwelling- house of George Newman, Kington Magna, Dorset, on the 17th instant: two Skim ' Cheeses, about 20 lbs. each ; a blue rep Dress, trimmed with black ; a light Dress, trimmed with lace ; two Table Cloths ; a lady's double- breasted blue Jacket, black buttons; three pairs of white cotton Stockings; two ditto Drawers ; two Chemises ; a black lace Hat, trimmed with amber ribbon ; a black fancy Apron ; a Butter Cloth ; and a box of Ribbons, of various sorts. By a man and woman : the man is 30 yrs. of age, 6 feet 1 inch high, sallow complexion, slender build, small daik moustache, no whiskers, and has been a soldier ; dressed in dark trousers and white slop. The woman is 31 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, light hair, fair com- plexion, and front teeth projecting a little; may be found wearing some of the stolen clothes. Information to be given, to Superintendent Brown, Dorset Constabulary, Shaftesbury. — Bow- street^ September 21. Absconded from Westerham, charged with stealing a Suit of Clothes and a Half- sovereign ( recovered), on the 4th instant, the property of W. H. Francis: ARTHUR BURTON, a tramping shoemaker, from 37 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 0 or 10 inches high,- dark hair and whiskers ; dressed in light mixture peafy dark vest and trousers, dark striped cotton shirt, hard felt hat, and. old spring- side boots; he is a native of Tunbridge Information to be given to Superintendent O'Kill, Sevenoaks, Kent, who holds a warrant for his appre- hension.— Bow- street, September 18. Absconded from Swansea, on the 12th instant, charged with embezzling the sum of £ 1 12s., the monies of Messrs. Bullen, cab proprietors : ROBERT LORD, a cab driver, 20 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, light complexion, very light hair and eyebrows, no whiskers or moustache ; dressed in dark jacket and waistcoat, snuff- coloured trousers, and howler hat. Infermation to be given to Head Constable Allison, Swansea, Glamorganshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, September 18. Stolen on the night of the 13th instant, from the dwelling- house of George Worthey, labourer, Repwick, near Thirsk: a blue cloth Coat, two pockets outside, one inside left breast;' a single- breasted blue cloth Vest; £ 2 10s. in Gold ; and 19s. 6d. in Silver. By a man who lodged in the house, 35 years of age, about 5 feet 9 inches high, fresh com- plexion, brown hair, brown or sandy whiskers or moustache ; dressed in stolen jacket and vest, grey tweed trousers, new • watertight boots, black or blue cloth cap, with cheesecutter peak and a brass button at each side. He stated that he served 12 years in the Army, that he was a nativte of Glasgow, that he has worked at a screwing machine there, and is now supposed to be making for that place. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Walmsley, Northallerton, or to Inspector Nicholson, Constabulary Office, Thirsk, York- shire,— Bow- street, September 18. JOHN FRAMPTON and MARY ANN FRAMPTON, described in Police Gazette of the 14th instant, charged with stealing Jewellery from a dwelling- house at Tunbridge Wells, have been apprehended, and remanded, and the property has been recovered. The man is 34 years of age, about 5 feet 4 inches high, black hair, whiskers, and moustache, dark eyes, fresh complexion, and stout figure ; dressed in dark mixture tweed coat, black cloth trousers, and black felt hat, all • shabby; he is a general smith, a native of Staines, and some- times suffers from a bad leg ; the woman is 25 years of age, about 5 feet 4 inches high, very thin, slight figure, dark brown hair, blue eyes, pale complexion; dressed in dark brown frock, black velvet jacket, black straw hat with black feather; she is an ironer, and a native of Hastings. Absconded from Cleobury Mortimer on the 7th instant, charged with stealing £ 3 6s. 6d., belonging to Mr. John Potter, his employer : WILLIAM POSTANS, 25 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, sallow complexion, brown hair, no whiskers, seal on each shoulder blade; dressed in a brown tweed coat and vest, new cotton cord trousers, black jimcrow hat, grey cotton mixture shirt, purple and black scarf, and old side- spring boots ; he has a dirty appearance. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Ivins, Bridgnorth, or to Sergeant Collis, Cleobury Mortimer, Shropshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, Sept. 16.
