As no charge is made for the insertion of any aiticle in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. Information to be given to Superintendent Smith, Yeovil, Somerset.— Bow- street, Hay 29. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Oil the morning of the 19th. instant, Mr. Joseph Ward, of Hay, BreconBhire, was fouud dead in bed, from injuries received in a scuffle the previous night, at Hay, beiug fair night. At the coroner's inquest held on the 21st instant, a verdict of Manslaughter was returned against a man named JOHN SMITH, in custody, and against another luaa unknown, short and stout, and dressed in grey clothes he has a shooting gallery or show, and travels to fairs. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Evans, Crickhowell, or to Sergeant Jones, Hay, Breconshire. — Bow- street, May 27. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Description of WM. FREDERICK MARGATWYD, alias COBBLER, of York, a labourer, charged with highway robbery at the township of Clifton, near York, on the 25th instant, in company with two men in custody : he is about 20 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 Inches high, fair complexion, libgbt brown hair, very slight moustache, no whiskers, and of proportionate figure ; dressed in a grey tweed cloth coat, light striped cloth trousers, blue necktie with white stripes, round hard black felt hat, waterproof double- soled shooting boots ; he is a member of the Scarborough Militia, and was discharged on the 21st instant ; it is most probable he will seek employment at some railway statiou as a shunter, having held a similar position previous to joining the Militia. Stolen from the person in a drinking- booth at Ely Fair, on the evening of the 30th ultimo, a silver lever Watch, jewelled in two holes, maker James Smith, Bacup, No. 1938, enamel dial, sunk seconds, figure 6 cliipped partly off, has a plated curb albert Chain iuid Locket ( with blue scone) attached, the property of John Cooper, of Ely. Stolen on the night of the 25th ultimo, from the person of a drunken man, while lying on the road- side at ^ instable, inear Penrith, Cumberland : £ i 10s. in Gold ; a gentleman's small gold Ring, set with small blue stone, which had been scratched with a pin; an American 20 cent Piece; and a small white Pockethandkerchief. Stolen from the person at Wye Races, on the 27th ult.: a large old- fashioned open- faced gold Watch, plain case, jet Guard attached, value £ 20. Also at Ashford Railway Station, the fame day : a silver lever Watch, No. 658, maker John Brunton, 3, America- square, London. Information to be given to Superintendent Noakes, Ashford, Kent.— Bow- street, June 1. Stolen from the person of William Neal, landlord of the Swan Inn, Hanley Castle, on the night of the 26th instant : a large- size gold open face lever Watch, gold engine- turned dial, No. 6806, and long heavy gold guard attached. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Checketts, Upton- on- Severn, Birmingham.— Bow- street, May 29. Stolen from the person at Odcombe, Somerset, on the night of the 26th instant: a silver Geneva Hunting Watch, BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. On the night of the 31st ultimo, the dwelling- house of John Able, at Garvestone, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a black cloth Frock Coat, nearly new, lined with black alpaca, sleeves lined with calico, outside flap pockets, one pocket inside, machine stitched. Supposed by a tramping gardener, about 80 years of age, about 5 ft. 8 ins. high, swarthy complexion, small dark whiskers turning grey, thin face, and slightly made ; dressed in old brown velveteen frock coat, two pockets on each side, one large inside pocket, old greasy cord trousers, black chummy hat, and is lame; he said he came from Suffolk. Information to be given to Su- perintendent Symonds, East Dereham, Norfolk.— Bow- street, June 5. On the 2nd instant, a cottage at Baynball, in the parish of Severn Stoke, in the occupation of Frederick Smith, was broken and entered, and the following articles stolen therein: au old- fashioned silver Watch, with bull's eye glass, and a steel Chain, with a Key and two Seals attached, one a steel and the other a brass, one having a white stone set in it, upon which is cut a man and dog, the man having a gun in his hand, pointed as if to shoot ; a piece of hock of Bacon, about 4 lbs. ; and about 1A lbs. of Currant Cake. Supposed by tramps. Information to be given to Superintendent Checketts, Police Office, Upton- on- Severn.— Bow- st., June 5. Between 10 a. m. and 3 p. m. on the 30th ultimo, the | cottage of William Cuff, of Linton, in the Hamlet of High- uam, was broken into, and stolen therein, supposed by tramps: a Sovereign ; 3s. lid. in Silver and Coppers; a soft black bowler Hat, with red lining, pioture in the crown, and broad black band ; an old black cloth Vest, single- breasted, much worn, black buttons, one off, and pieces let in atsidestomake it larger. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Griffin, Police Office, Gloucester.— Bow- street, June 3. The dwelling- house of Mrs. Ratcliffe, Matlock Villa, Eurton- on- Trent, was burglariously entered about 1 a. m. on the 30th ultimo, and the following articles stolen therein : a wicker Knife Basket; three silver Table Spoons, marked ' T. M. H. ;' eight silver Tea Spoons, some marked ' A.,' some ! ' R. ;' five electro- plated Forks ; one ditto Pickle Fork ; two I ditto Sauce Ladles ; and a Butter Knife. By a man, about i 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, no whiskers, and I dark hair ; dressed in dark clothes. Information to be given ' to Superintendent Bowen, Burton- on- Trent, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, Juw. 3. Slolen from the residence of the Rev. Charles Blomfield Lockwood, Biggleswade, on the 31st ultimo : 1 topaz Gross, set in gold, Ear- rings to match with gold Chain. 1 pair of coral Bracelets. 2 Cairngorm Pins, in box, with ' Macdonald, Jeweller, Perth,' written inside. 1 pair of coral Ear- rings. 1. pair of smoked pearl Ear- rings. 1 jet Chain and Cross. 1 twisted gold Brooch set with stone. 1 small round diamond Brooch. 1 gold Locket, opens like a vinaigrette, topaz on one side. 1 blue Gross, set in gold, with Locket Holder. And a sealskin Purs;, containing about £ 5 in gold. By JANET EMERY, a servant in the employ of Mr. Lock- wood, who absconded on the morning the robbery was com- mitted, 16 years of age, about 5 feet 5 inches high, fresh complexion, light hair, verv blotched face ; dressed in a grey dress and black bonnet. Information to be given to Super- intendent Bedlow, Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, June 3. On the night of the 22nd ultimo, the dwelling- house of Mr. H. Whitehouse, Cannock, was entered, and the^ following property stolen tbereiu : a dark grey Topcoat, pockets on flaps, and lined with black serge ; a grey plaid cloth Jacket, pockets on flaps, and one inside breast; two silk Pocket- handkerchiefs, one white with mauve edge, the other white with black spots in centre. Also during the night of the 27th ultimo, the dwelling- house of Charles Glover, Oldfallow, Cannock, was entered, and a black cloth sac Coat, pockets on each side, and one inside breast; two blue cloth Jackets, bound with silk braid, pockets on flaps and inside breast; and about 20s. in Silver, stolen therein. Information to be given to Superintendent Hill, Brownhills, near Walsall, or to Sergeant Evans, Cannock, near Stafford. — Bow- street, June 1. On the 31st ultimo the house of HENRY UNWIN, Fairstead, farmer, was entered, and the following property stolen therein : 9 silver Tea Spoons— 3 small, marked ' M, P."; and 6 large. 2 Table Spoons. 1 gold Wedding Ring, plain. Stolen from off Maidenhead Thicket, on the night of the 28th ultimo : an aged brown Mare, lame on all four legs having ring bones on each, the off knee broken, and in poor condition. Information to be given to Superintendent Iremonger, Berks Constabulary, County Police Office, Maidenhead, Berks.— Bow- street, June 3. Stolen on the 27th, or early on the 28th ultimo, from Gallow- fields, Gallowgate, Richmond : a dun- coloured mare Pony, about 14 hands high, with black mark down the back and tail, hind feet white from the fetlock joint, a little lame of the off forefoot, and in good condition. All' expenses will be paid, and any person giving information to Super- intendent Camfield, Head Constable's Office, Richmond, Yorkshire, that will lead to its recovery, will be rewarded. — Bow- street, June 1. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Stolen on the 12th ultimo, from the Yew Tree Beer- house, New- road, Chesterton : a silver verge Watch, since recovered, the property of Daniel Finney. By an Irish tramp, about ! 8 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, dark complexion, no whiskers, and of dirty appearance ; dressed in an old olack felt hat, moleskin jacket and trousers, and leather waistcoat. Information to be given to Sergeant Stanton, Chesterton, near Newcastle- under- Lyme, Staffordshire.— Bew- it., June 5. Charged on a warrant with embezzlement at Aldersbot: JAMES CARVER, of Hall, near Farnham, Surrey : be is about 25 years of age, 5 feet or 8 inches high, slight build, sallow complexion, uark hair, very thin whiskers and mous- tache, fcnd has an awkward gait. Information to be given to Superintendent Stephenson, Hants Constabulary, Aldorsbot. — Bow- ttreet, June 5. Description of a man, ( a tramp; charged with assaulting a girl at the Whitgreane Toll Gate House, near Stafford, on the 30tVi ultimo, and stealing from a drawer in the house, about 3*. in Silver and Copper money, the preperty of Edwin Dax, the toll- gate keeper : he is about 2i> years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark looking, no whiskers ; dressed in an old suit of black clothes, and black cap, with straight peak, and walked a little lame. Information to be given to the Deputy Chief Constable, Forebridge, Stafford.— Bow- street, June 3. Absconded from Newcastle- on- Tyne, on the 18tb ultimo, charged on a warrant with embezzling various sums of Money : JOHN S. MITCHELL, a commercial traveller, and a native of Elgin, N. B., about 25 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, dark curly hair, slight dark whiskers, oval features, fresh complexion, dark eyes, walks erect, and speaks somewhat slow, but with a refined Scotch accent; dressed when he absconded in black shooting coat, dark grey trousers, and black silk hat ; he has been out in Canada, and may endeavour to get there again. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Newcastle- upon- Tyne. — Bow- street. June 3. Stolen from a cottage at Poulton, between the l!) th and 24th ultimo : a cloth Jacket, the property of Jolin Bond, a labourer, and since found pledged. By a man who has absconded, about 22 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, stout build, round full face, dark brown hair, small whiskers, and fresh complexion ; dressed in white slop, old cord trousers, very much worn and patched on both knees, and between the legs, with lighter coloured cord, biack jimcrow hat; he is a farm labourer, but has worked for some time in a brick yard. Information to be given to Superintendent Wood, Constabulary Office, Cirencester, or to Sergeant Mason, Police Station, Fairford, Gloucestershire.— Bow- street, June 3. Absconded on the 27th ultimo, charged with stealing four Fowls : WALLIS EASTON, about 32 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, proportionate figure, dark brown hair and moustache, no whiskers, pale face, and is a carpenter ; dressed in black billycock hat, and very dark grey suit. Information to be given to Superintendent Jefferv, Guestling, near Hastings, or at any Police Station in East Sussex.— Bow- street, June 3. Description of DANIEL COYLE, a tramping french- polisher, charged with stealing a Watch ( recovered) at Wey- mouth, the property of John Smith : he is about 50 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fresh complexion, slight build, brown hair and whiskers ; dressed in a long black coat, dark vest and trousers, much worn, old boots, black soft felt hat, and new white apron. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Vickery, Police Office, Weymouth, Dorsetshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, June 3. Absconded from Stanground, Hunts, on the 26th ultimo, charged with larceny at Whittlesey, in the Isle of Ely : ABRAHAM NICHOLLS, of Stan'ground, labourer, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, light brown hair, blue eyes, fair complexion, and has but little or no - whiskers ; dressed in an old csarse canvas jacket, and sometimes a pilot coat over it; he has been employed as a maltster's cartor, and is likely to try for similar employment; he is supposed to be accompanied by his wife and two children. By a man of the following description, who lodged at the house during the nijjht and absconded next morning : about 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 l'nfches high, of respectable appearance, very red face, red hair and whiskers, which he wears all round face ; dressed in a suit of black cloth, elastic- side boots, with buttons down sides, new stiff billycock hat ; he left behind him an old stiff billycock hat. By a youth, 15 years of age, 5 feet 2 ins. high, fair complexion, light hair ; dressed in dark jacket, pockets at sides, light trousers, dark vest, heavy laced boots, and round hat.— Metropolitan Police, E Division, Hay 29. Absconded on the 22nd instant, from. London Bridge railway Station, charged with stealing a japanned tin Box, • V. Gerrard' in front, containing ;£ 8Q ip Gold, and £ M in French Money : two men, one 27 years of age, 5 feet 7 ins. high, dark complexion and hair ; dressed iu company's uniform ; the other 34 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches liigh, fair complexion, light brown hair, slight whiskers and inoustache, short sighted, knits his brows, and wears spectacles.— — Metropolitan Police, M Division, May 29. A warrant has been issued at Tunbridge Wells for the apprehension of ELIZA. DEACON, ou a charge of stealing a large quantity of Wearing Apparel iu April 1873. She is about 48 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, dark wavy hair, dark complexion, gipsy- looking, thick lips, and large nose with scar on it; she sometimes hawks baskets and mats and sometimes a few oranges ; has a steelyard, and pretends to deal in rags and bones, and professes to tell fortunes ; she is a native of Sussex, near Hastings, and is well known in Kent and Sussex. Information to be given to Chief Constable Embery, Town Hall, Tunbridge Wells, Ktmt.— Biw- sireet, May 29. FELOHXES. ( Not otherwise described). Escaped from the custody of P. C. Woods, at Woodton, on the moTmrg of the 28th ultimo, while in the act of arresting ARTHUR WEBB, charged with committing a rape upon the person of Alice Green, 25 years of age, at Bedingbam, on the night of the 27th ultimo : lie is 22 years of age, a private in the 101st Bengal Fusiliers, 5 feet 9 inches high, fair complexion, light moustache, no whiskers, high cheek bones, stout built; dressed in old corduroy trousers, and military boots ; after he made his escape he was supplied with a drabbet slop, which had beui recently washed and mended, and an old hairy cap ; was last seen going in the direction of Norwich ; he was on furlough at Woodton, and should have returned to his regiment on the 28th ultimo, which is quartered at Fleetwood iu Lancashire. At the time he made his escape he had but his ohirt, trousers, and boots on. Information to be given to Superintendent Riches, Loddon, Norfolk, who holds a warrant for his apprehension, or to any of the County Constabulary.— Bow- street, June 1. railway clerk, and was for some time employed in the office of Messrs. Burns and McIver, shipowners, Liverpool; usually wore a blue monkey or reeling jacket, dark trousers, white shirt, ami common black tie, and generally went well dressed. Oil the 18th October last this person sent a false telegram from Liverpool to Messrs. John Reid and Co., shipbuilders, Port Glatgow, purporting to be from Mr. James Reid, sou of the senior partner of that firm, requesting that a bank draft for £ 20 should be sent to him at the Grand Junction Hotel, Liverpool; the draft was sent in a registered letter as desired, and the accused got possession of it and cashed the cheque. On the 13th February last Messrs. John Kerr and Co., ship- owners in Greenock, received a telegram purporting to be from Captain Pirnie, master of their ship ' Culzean,' which was then lying at Liverpool, requesting that £ 20 should be sent to him at 85, Duke- street, Liverpool; on the 14th and 16th February he wrote to the Tost Office officials in Liver- pool, requesting that the registered letter which would arrive addressed to Captain Pirnie, shotild' be sent to 45, Great Oxford- street, Mount Pleasant, Liverpool ; he signed Captain l'irnie's name to both these letters, and when the registered letter arrived it was delivered at 45, Great Oxford- street, and accused again forged Captain Pirnie's name to the receipt required by the Post Of See authorities. Information to be given to Robert Blair, Esq., Procurator Fiscal, Greenock, or to Superintendent Dewar, Police Chambers, Greenock, lten- frewshire, N. B. — Bow- street, June 1. FRAUDS AND AGGRAVATED MISDEMEA3? OURS. Description of two men, who obtained 2') s. from a cler- gyman in Macclesfield on the 2nd instant, by fraud : they had with them a Gig or Trap, and a dark bay Horse, about 14 hands high, and they offered for sale a piece of Cloth : one aboiu 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, sharp featarea, dark hair, small whiskers, slender make ; dressed in a grey suit, and low felt hat; the other about 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, stout, and dressed in dark, clothes. Information to be given to Superintendent Saxton, County Police, Macclesfield, Cheshire.— Doio- st'eet, Jy. ne 5. Charged with fraudulently obtaining, on the 13th ultimo, a Horse aud Phaeton, recovered : — SULLIVAN, 24 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fair hair and complexion, slight moustache, and sunburnt ; dressed in light overcoat, amber shirt, and high black hat; wore a gold ring with large oval black stone, and of gentlemanly appearance. Warrant issued. — Metropolitan Police, T Division, June 3. Description of JAMES DUNCAN, charged with fraud at Greenock : a clerk, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, has scrofulous marks on both sides of neck, but mostly on the left side, black hair, sallow complexion, roundish face, dark eyes, short nose, whiskers thin on cheeks, wears mous- tache and beard, ordinary make, Scotch accent, was bred SL MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATIONS. Description of HENRY MASON, who has failed to report his intention of leaving his residence, as required by the Prevention of Crimes Act : he is 37 years of age, 5 feet 3j inches high, fair complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, nose broken, three moles in front of neck, scar on right bi east, and mole on left breast. Was convicted of forgery at the Central Criminal Court on the 6th July, 1868, aud sentenced to 7 years penal servitude, and was discharged from Portsmouth Convict Prison on the 22nd December, 1873. He left Hull on the 28th May, 1874, and has been residing since his dis- charge in Leeds and neighbourhood. Information to be given to Chief Constable Cook, Hull, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, June 3. Description of license holder Reg. No. 261, JAMES DORMER, who has failed to report himself at the Police Station, Fenny Stratford, Bucks, and supposed to have left the district: 35 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, sallow complexion, brown hair aud eyes. He was convicted at Aylesbury Assizes on the 10th of July, 1858, and sentenced to death, which was commuted to penal servitude for life, and discharged from Parkhurst Prison, on the 18th July, 1870. Was convicted at Scarborough on the 8t, li January, 1873, of larceny, and sentenced " to 15 months imprisonment and 3 years police supervision ; she was discharged from Scarborough Gaol on the 7th April last.
