POLICE Sutljority, CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received in eases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The - iames of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 5500 FRIDAY, APRIL 17, 1874. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MB. C. *#* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for tho insertion of any aiticle in the POLICE GAZETTE, ail Letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from tho regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " Tho Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. Stolen from the person on the evening of the 7th inst., at the Red Lion Inn, in the city of Hereford : a silver lever hunting Watch, name— Myers and Son, No. 4939, three Seals attached to a ring, one with a blue stone and letter D engraved thereon. By a man who travels the country bell- hanging and as a tinker, carries a long rush basket in which he carries his tools, which he left behind ; about 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, dark brown hair, marked with smallpox, and no whiskers or moustache ; dressed in a black jacket, dirty cord trousers, and black bowler hat. Information to be given to Head Constable Davis, Hereford.— Bow- street, April 10. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING- On the morning of the 5th instant, the dead body of a new- born male child was found in the yard of an un- occupied house in West- street, in the parish of Melcombe Regis. At an adjurned inquest held on the 13th instant, a verdict of ' Wilful Murder' was returned against some person or persons unknown. £ 5 reward will be given to any person who will give such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the person or persons who placed the body where found, and a further reward of £ 5 will be paid to any person or persons who will give such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction ef the mother of the said child. Information to be given to Superintendent Vickery, Police Office, Weymouth, Dorset.— Bow- street, April 17. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Description of a man chargad with burglary at Wey- mouth on the night of the 14th instant, and stealing about 4s. in Coppers, some Jersey and Guernsey Money, 1 Chisel, and 2 Piles, 11 inches long and J inch wide : he is about 30 or 34 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, slight build, fresh complexion, no whiskers, small moustache, and dark hair and eyes; dressed in old black overcoat, vest, and trousers, soft felt hat, which he wears over his eyes, and side- sping boots ; has the appearance of a ticket- of- leave man : was seen at Abbotsbury at 8 a. m. on the 15th inst., where he spent some of the money; he is a tramp. Information to be given to Superintendent Vickery, Weymouth, Dorset. — Bow- street, April 17. On the morning of the 14th instant, the Clock Face publichouse, situate in Lord- street, in the borough of Roch- dale, was burglariously entered, and the following Articles stolen therein : a lady's black velvet Jacket, small size, tight- fitting, lined with black, and trimmed with corded silk; a grey and white plaid woollen Shirt; and a box of good Cigars. Absconded from Burton- upon- Trent, on the 5th instant, charged with breaking into a shop, and stealing a quantityjof Wearing Apparel and other articles therein : JOHN THOMPSON, stocking weaver, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, proportionate make, dark complexion, black hair, no whiskers ; dressed in black billycock hat, dark coat and waistcoat, cord trousers, and lace- up boots; supposed to be well kuowu at Nottingham, Leicester, and Sheffield. Stolen from a stable at Sherborne, near Northleach, on the night of the 6th inst. : a light brown horse Donkey, white nose, about 8 years old, iu good condition, was seen being led aleng the road in the direction of Cheltenham, on the morn- ing of the 7th instant, by a man, about 60 years of age ; dressed in a black cap with peak, velveteen jacket, cord trousers, he was lame, and walking with a stick. In company with Thomas Huddleston, about 35 years of age, about 5 feet 10 inches high, no whiskers, red face and nose, and brown hair. Description of WM. PURCELL, who eloped with ETHEL FABRONOUS, nee COLE, from Birkenhead : he is 22 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, slender build, brown hair, no whiskers or moustache, does not shave; dressed in a long blue pilot overcoat, dark striped tweed trousers, silk " hat, and side- spring boots; she is 23 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, stout build, pale complexion, round face, broad nose turned up at end, dark brown hair, black eyes and eyebrows, and small hands; dressed in black dress with deep black and white flounce round bottom, black cloth jacket trimmed with grey fur, and black velvet hat with peacock feathers, maybe wearing a blue merino dress with large metal buttons. They have taken with them about £ 50 in English gold Coins, several French Napoleons, Chilian and Spanish gold Pieces, a gold Ring, with two hearts engraved thereon ; and a gold Watch, with long gold guard attached. £ 10 reward will be paid to anyone giving such informatiou as shall lead to their arrest and recovery of the money, or in proportion to the amount recovered. Stolen from a lodging- house in Sleaford, on the 10th instant: a pair- case silver verge Watch, No. 10282, maker Williams, London, had a white metal Chain, attached; also an old black cloth Coat, both of which have been recovered. By a youth, about 17 yeais of age, very low stature, stout build, full face, high cheek bones, light hair, and fair complexion ; dressed in an old butcher's blue coat, fustian trousers, very ragged at the bottoms, cloth cap with peak, and old boots, cut in front ; a native of Norfolk. In- formation to be given to Superintendent Stevenitt, County Police Station, Sleaford, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, April 15. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Description of CURTIS BERRY, a cashier, who absconded from Bury on the 4th instant, taking with him Bank of England Notes and Cash amounting to over £ 2500, Stolen at Netherhamptou, on the 10th instant : a man's black and white stripe cloth Shirt, with calico binders. By a tramp, about 24 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, rather light hair, and lame of one leg ; dressed in old black or dark trousers and coat, old button boots and cap, and was wearing the stolen shirt ; slept at the Alderbury Union the same night. Information to be given to the Superintendent of Police, Fisherton, Salisbury, Wilts.— Boic- street, April 13. Absconded from Monmouth on the 11th instant, charged with stealing a lady's gold Watch and Chain, at the Mason's Arms Inn, Monmouth, the property of Mr. Francis Jones : a man who had the appearancc of a mechauic, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, sallow complexion, dark whiskers and moustache ; dressed ia a dark suit of clothes, 2 POLICE GAZETTE, April 17 supposed all of the same materia), and high downed hat. Absconded from Eton, Bucks, on the 28th ultimo, charged with embezzling the sum of £ 2, the monies of his employer : WILLIAM POULTON, about 31 years of age, 5 feet G or 7 iuches high, pale complexion, light brown hair, very small light whiskers, two teeth out in front, light coat and rest, light - worsted cord trousers, and black billy hat ; he is a native of Maidenhead, Beiks, a baker by trade, has worked at Brav, Berks, and at Harefield, Herts. Description of GEOBGE TAYLOR, alias JOHN ROGERS, who is committed for trial at the Midsummer Quarter Sessions, for the county of Montgomery : says he is a native of Hanley, Staffordshire, by trade an earthenware painter, 30 years of age, 5 feet 4f inches high, fresh coni- cplexion, grey eyes, light brown hair and mcustache, blue sear orner and over right eye, burn mark right cheek, bridge of nose broken, and ' 1)' on left side ; dressed in plaid trousers, drab cloth waistcoat, old grey cloth jacket, blue ilannel eliirt, grey cap with plaid band and clogs ; he also says he has served 12 years ill the Arlny, and that ho was discharged at Fort George in December, 1872, and since that time has been working at Swan3C- a and other parts of South Wales. Description of a man charged with stealing a Waistcoat from the Anchor Inn, Leominster, on the morning of the 8th instant, wl ich was pledged the same evening at Hereford, in the name of ' Geo. Williams, Bath- street, Hereford'; about 40 years of age, 5 feet 9 iuches high, stoutly built, dark hair, whiskers, and complexion ; dressed in dark clothes, coat fi tted loose, appeared like an overcoat, and high orowued hat; stated he was a saddler, looking for work. He is supposed to be the same man described in the Police Gazette of the 10th instaut, as stealing a silver hunting Watch from the Fleece Iun, Hereford, and further described on the 13th instant, as having stolen a lady's gold Watch from the Mason's Arms Inn, Monmouth, on the 11th instaut. Information to be given to Superintendent Johnson, Leominster, Herefordshire.— Bow- street, April 17. Description of GEORGE JANNETT, name supposed fictitious, who is remanded until the 22nd instant, charged with stealing from the person at the Abergavenny Baces, on the 9th instant: he is about 28 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches street, April 13. 5 feet 6 iuches high, dark brown hair, nearly bald on top of larceny : he ij 30 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, fair com- plexion, dark brown hair, hazel eyes, and no whiskers; dressed in old light cloth trousers, black cloth vest, white neckerchief, ai, d old black billycock hat. Information to be given to the Deputy Chief Constable, Luton, Beds,— Bow- street, April 16. Remanded till 20th inst., at Stafford, GEO. HUNTER, on suspicion of stealing a small silver lever Watch, No. 1796, found in his possession : 35 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark brown hair, hazel eyes, fresh complexion, mole on chin, has lost three upper front teeth, no whiskers or moustache; dressed in dark brown monkey jacket, with brown velvet collar, grey vest, black and white mixture trousers, woollen plaid shirt, black cloth cap, tied in front with black ribbon, large paper collar, no necktie, aud Wellington Vopts; snpposed to be of Irish descent, says that up to about six months ago he lived in Ryland- street, Birmingham, aud worked at Messrs. Payton's, New Hall- street, aud since that time he has been living at Sheffield and Manchester. Information to be given to Inspector Hackney, Staffordshire CeiiStabulary, Stafford.— Bow- street, April 10, Committed to Northallerton Gaol for 21 days hard labour, under the Vagrant Act, on the 9th instant: JOSEPH BLACK, 30 years of age, 5 feet iuches high, sallow com- plexion, grey eyes, browu hair, stout build ; dressed in an old mixture cloth coat and vest, corduroy trousers, black cloth cap, and clogs, all muph worn; states lie is a native of Newcastle- upon- Tyne, of no occupation, and that he has been in most gaols in the North of England. Information to be given to Superintendent Metcalfe, Constabulary Office, Malton, York.— Bow- street, April 13. Description of a suspected person found dealing with Property at Aldershot, supposed to have been stolen : about 30 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, slight figure, thin pale face, dark brown hair, no whiskers, long moustache, brown eye?, long white teeth, and of respectable appearance; dressed in a suit o£ dark clothes, and deerstalker hat. Stated he belonged to Birmingham. Information to be given to Superintendent Stephenson, Hants Constabulary, Aldershot. — Bow- street, April 13. Committed to Northallerton Gaol for six weeks hard labour, on a charge of larceny under the Criminal Justice Act, on the nth instant: HENRY FINCH, 33 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fresh complexion, grey eyes, brown hair, and slender make ; dressed in dark cloth coat and vest, cord trousers, black cloth cap, and lace- up boots; states he is a native of Paddington- green, London, a drover, and attends cattle fairs and markets iu the North of England. FREDERICK DOLTON or JOHN RIGBY, 30 years of age, 5 feet 2j inches high, brown hair, blue eyes, fresh com- plexion, scar front and left side of neck, hearts, cross, and ' W. F.' inside right arm, anchor inside left arm. Was con- victed of larceny in a dwelling- house at Appleby on the 3rd July, 1868, and was sentenced to 7 years penal servi- tude ; was discharged from Portsmouth Convict Prison on the 10 th January, 1874. EDWARD ALLEN, 24 years of age, 5 feet 8J inches high, light brown bair, pockmarked centre of forehead, mole on lower part of back. Was convicted of larceny at Great Yarmouth on the 14th October, 1872, and was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment and 3 years police supervision ; he vras discharged from Great Yarmouth Gaol on the 11th October, 1873. JOHN TAYLOR, 33 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, light brown hair, scar on point of second finger left hand, scar right of forehead. Was convicted of larceny at Manchester on the 21st August, 1873, and was sentenced to six months imprison- ment and 7 years police supervision; she was discharged from Manchester City Gaol on the 20th February, 1874.
