C. *•* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably neccssary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with tho Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for tho insertion of any ai tide in the POLICE GAZETTE, all liCtters addressed to the Editor eilUSt be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may bo addressed to " The Undev Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. Description of PETER BRAY, alias P. McDONALD, charged with highway robbery at Brandon, in the county of Durham ( with others now in custody) : he is 22 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, brown mole on light side of neck, second finger of left hand broken and crooked at the end, slight impediment in speech, and a swelling on his neck when last seen in prison. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Dunn, Durham County Constabulary, Durham, who holds a warrant for his appre- hension.— Bow- street, February 20. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. At a few minutes past G o'clock on the evening of the • 22nd December last, Francis Wynn was attacked by a man at present unknown, severely assaulted and knocked down, as he left Wrigley's eating- house in West- street, in the borough of Oldham, and died on the lst ultimo, from the effects of the BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. During the night of the 23rd instant, the dwelling- house of Mrs. Ann Taylor, Church- street, Tetbury, was burgla- riously entered and the following silver articles stolen therein : two Table Spoons, nine Tea, one Desert, aud one Silt Spoon, and one pair of Sugar Tongs, some marked ' J. A. T.', and some ' A. T.' Information to be given to Ser- geant White, Tetbury, Gloucestershire.— Bow- street, Feb. 27. On the night of the 21st instant, tbe dwelling- house of Mr. William Draper, of Witton, near Birmingham, was burglariously entered, and six silver tea Spoons, marked ' M. W.' stolen therein. The thieves were disturbed by the owner, and in making their escape one of them was fired at with a gun, and supposed to be wounded. A reward of .£ 10 will be paid to any person or persons giving such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders. Stolen on the night of the 20th instant, by means of housebreaking, from the premises ot- William Burson, Grove- green, near Wantage, Berks : a drab cloth Overcoat, small size, has large white bone Studs, with four holes, both wrists a little worn, lilac- coloured serge lining in the skirts, the lower part of each skirt mended with pieces of light red serge; also a horse Rug, brown, led, aud yellow stripes injuries received. The man COOK, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 12th ultimo, charged with others with a murderous assault on the gamekeepers at Haywood, njar Hereford, is still at large, aud is supposed in the works on the borders of Mon- mouthshire, Breconshire, and Glamorganshire. Supposed by two men of the following description, who left Leatherhead the same night by the 1040 p. m. train for Waterloo : one about 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches Description of two men giving the names of GEORGE WHITE and EDWARD TAYLOR, supposed fictitious, committed for trial at the ensuing Warwick Assizes, to be held on the 26th instant, on a charge of horse stealing : White is 42 years of age, 5 feet inches high, slim built, long pale visage, slight dark brown whiskers, nearly meeting at chin, thin moustache, sallow complexion, dark brown hair, hazel eyes, slight ecar over the right eye, and appears to be in a somewhat delicate state of health ; dressed in a dark Scotch cheviot suit, a long dark serge overcoat, with band round the waist, lace- up shoes, and black billycock hat. Taylor is 27 years of age, 6 feet high, stout aud muscular built, round head, dark brown hair cut short, full face, clean shaved, fresh complexion, grey eyes, and a large mole on left side of chin ; dressed in a snuff- coloured mixture cloth suit, the trousers and vest being much worn, and the latter buttoned close up under the chin, a long rough snuff- coloured overcoat, nearly touching his heels, with pockets on the hips, strong nailed lace- up shoes, and black billycock hat; each are wearing silk neckerchiefs, without collars, rouud their necks. Taylor represents himself as the servant of White. Photo- graphs can be had upon application to Superintendent Gallaway, Constabulary Station, Aston, near Birmingham. — Bow- street, February 25. Stolen from a field near Brewood, on tbe 7th instant: three ewe Sheep of the Shropshire breed, dark faced, in good condition, and ruddle marked lengthwise on back. £ 1 reward will be paid by Mr. Davies, butcher, Stafford- street, Brewood, near Stafford, for such information as shall lead to the con- viction of tbe offender. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Disney, Stafford, or to Sergeant Barrett, Penkridge, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, February 23. Stolen from a field in the borough of Middlesborough, on the night of the 12th instant : a dark brown half- bred saddle MaTC, ' about 9 years old, 14J hands high, has two white hind fetlocks, a white star on forehead, several grey hairs on back from saddle mark, a mole on near shoulder, rough coat, and iu good condition. Information to be given to Chief Constable Saggerson, Middlesborough, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, February 20. Stolen from a stable at Walkington, during the night of the 15th instant : an aged black nag Pony, newly clipped, about 13 hands high, square tail, and has a mark oil near side, just below the back, caused by the kick of a horse. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Naylor, East riding Constabulary, Beverley.— Bow- street, Feb. 20. Blackburn, on the 17th instant: he is 47 years of age, 5 feet a dark pilot jackct, and black felt liat. The other a shorter 5 or 6 inches high, proportionate make, fresh complexion, [ man, dressed in a dark grey coat. £ 10 reward will be paid round face, brown hair, sandy whiskers turning grey, no on recovery of the property and conviction of the offenders, moustache; dreseed in dark mixture coat, dark striped vest Information to be given to Superintendent Lambert, Surrey shoes ; he is a | Constabulary, Dorking, or to Inspector Bedford, Leather- and trousers, dark billycock hat, and lace- up book- keeper, a native of Burnley, and is wanted at Bacup for a similar crime. Charged with forgery in the city of London : ROBERT CALKIN, 17 years of age, 5 feet inches high, proportionate build, dark hair, sallow complexion ; dressed bead, Surrey.— Bow- street, February 23. On the night of the 18th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. Banes, chemist, High- street, boiough of Marlborough, was entered by means of raising the sash wiudow at the back of the house, and stolen therein : two old- fashioned silver Tea Spoons, one supposed marked ' M. B.', the ether'A. B.;' a pair of riveted watertight shooting Boots, six or seven brass in single- breasted black elastic webbing walking coat, with eyelet- holes, three black hooks at the top, and toe- capped; a pockets behind, black and white mixture trousers, double- 1 man's blue- black Overcoat, rather worn, vsry large black breasted vest of same material, blue pilot overcoat, with velvet collar, round top hat, and wore an old- fashioned gold watch ; a native of Nottingham. FELIX PRIOR, alias THOMAS DENNETT, about 29 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, rather thick- set figure, straight black hair, thick black moustache, whiskers shaved off; dressed respectably. Stolen from the person at Sutton Races, on the 16th instant : an opened- faced silver French made Watch, with a cat's head engraved on the back, maker ' Dulieus, Horloger, a Vierzon,' engraved on the inside of case. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Gallaway, Police StatioD, Aston, near Birmingham,— Bow- street, February 25, horn buttons, pockets outside, whole back, lined with green and black plaid ; aud a white cashmere Neckscarf. Sup- posed by a tramp, who was seen loitering about the house during the day, and offering files for sale, from 40 to 45 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, very round shouldered, and dressed iu dark clothes. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Stretton, Marlborough, Wilts.— Bow- street, February 20. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Description of two men charged with stealing two Horses from Reddish, on the 20th instant ( siuce recovered) : One about 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, sandy whiskers ; dressed iu light clothes and white slop. The other about 32 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark hair, whiskers, and moustache ; dressed in daik short coat, tight- fitting trousers, and billycock hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Bent, County Police Office, Old Trafford, near Manchester.— Bow- street, February 27. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Description of a man charged with stealing a Clock from the Congregational Chapel, Swinton, on the 21st or 22nd instant ( since found pawned at Duxbury's, Salford) : he gave the name of WILLIAM JONES, Eccles, aoout 40 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, sallow complexion, dark brown hair; dressed iu dark clothes. Information to be given to Superintendent Bent, County Police Office, Old Trafford, near Manchester.— Bow- street, Feb'uary 27. Stolen during the night of the 20th inctant, from Peny- nauu, iu the parish of Llandebie, Carmarthenshire : a black cloth Coat, with three pockets on the outside ; and a silver lever Watch, No. 18698, ' William Davis,' engraved on tbe inside case, the property of William Davies, of the above- mentioned place. By a man who gave the name of WM. JONES, who lodged iu the house, an engine driver, 25 years of age, 5 feet C inches high, small black whiskers on the chin, and sandy hair, cut short ; dressed in the stolen coat, black waistcoat and cap, moleskin trousers, with a hole burnt out- side right leg, above the knee. Information to be giv? n to Deputy Chief Constable Philipps, Llandilo, Carmarthen.— Bow- street, February 27. Stolen from the dwelling house of William Lillywhite, farmer, I field, on the 23id instant : a pilot Coat, with blue and red lining ; a pair of side- spring Boots ; a pair of half Boots, brass eyelet- holes, aud newly heeled ; and a large blue and white Handkerchief. By THOMAS CLARKE, of Slinfold, who has absconded : 19 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark complexion, hair, and eyes, slight figure ; dressed in a stableman's brown jacket, grey waistcoat and trousers, all nearly new, or he may be wealing the stoleu coat. A. warrant has been issued for his apprehension. Information to be given to Superintendent Henderson, West Sussex Con- stabulary, Horsham.— Boxo- street, February 27. Absconded on the 20th instant, from Bed Lion- squaie, 1 charged with embezzling £ 15, tbe monies of his master: a man, 25 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fair complexion, hair, whiskers, and moustache ; dressed iu black coat, vest, and trousers, and high hat.— Metropolitan Police, E Division, February 27. Absconded on tbe 21st instant, charged with stealing £ 30, the monies of his master: a youth, 17 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fresh complexion, brown luiir and eyes, slight build; dressed in black shooting coat, dai k vest aud trousers, blue tie, turndown collar, aud felt hat.— Metropolitan Police, L Ditision, February 27. Description of TOM BOYES, a timber merchant's clerk, who absconded from Basingstoke, on tho 24th iust., charged with embezzling £ 5 9s., the moneys of his master Edward White : about 5 feet 9 inches high, stout, well built, full face, dark complexion, brown whiskers, and no moustache; dressed in brown overcoat, black bowler felt hat, round crowned, 2 POLICE GAZETTE. February 27 black n ecktic, will be wearing a black cloth suit of clothes or a light tweed suit, somewhat wore, and side- spring or lace- up boot's ; he is a native of Totton, Southampton, where he is well known, and well be likely to apply at timber merchants for a situation as clerk at wharves in London ; is supposed to have taken a train at Winchfield for Waterloo, and will be likely to emigrate ( vifi Liverpool) for America. £ 2 reward will be paid on his apprelieusiou. Description of JOHN BREKNALL, a travelling jeweller, charged with stealing ou the 19th instant, from Hanley : twenty- four gold aud silver Watches— three silver Levers, silver dials, Nos. 1S279, 18070 aud 2882; live with plain dials, Nos. 13665, 23286, 13511, 44579 and 8877, one with gold dial. No. 52854 ; one lady's gold Lever, No. 52S54 ; one gold Lever white dihl, No. 57137; otoe gold centre second, white dial, No. 44993 : one gold Geneva, No. 90232 ; three silver Genevas, Nos. 275S9, 55,959, and [ 18382 ; two silver verge Watches— one No. 347, the other not known, name inside of Watches ' J. Harris, Wolverhampton' ; also thirteen gold gold Guards aud Alberts, various patterns ; one gold Necklet, and one silver Guard. lie is about 40 years of age, tall, very fresh complexion, ginger whiskers, stout build, has been in the army and police, and wears two medals. Information to be given to Chief Constable Williams, Hanley, Staffordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bout- street, February 27. Absconded on the 22nd instant, from Montgomery, charged with stealing a quantity of shoemaker's Tools, vi^. : three Double Irons; a Waist Iron i a Glaziug Iron; a Stamp ; a Work Knife ; a Seat File ; a Joint Rasp ; and three Awls, the property of William Proctor, shoemaker, Montgomery : a man of the following description, a tramping shoemaker, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark complexion, little dark whiskers, but shaved on chiu ; he is deaf and dumb, and it is supposed he has gone in the neighbourhood of Oswestry. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Newtown, or to P. C. Little, Montgomery, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.—- Bow- street, February 25. Stolen on the night of the 22nd instant, from the house of Cave Brown, eating- house keeper, Bridge- street, North- ampton : a small leather Purse, with steel clasp, containing 10s. in silver Money, a penny Postage Stamp, aud a Latter, addressed to ' Eliza Brown, Hanover Villa, Brook Green, Hammersmith, London,' and a black alpaca dress Skirt, with top panier to match, the property of Sarah Brown, servant. By a man of the following description, who slept at the house on the night of the 22nd instant, and left on the following morning : about 26 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, pale complexion ; dressed iu dark clothes and soft billycock hat, and carries a black leather bag. Information to be giveu to Chief Constable Keenan, Northampton.— Bow- street, Feb. 25. Stolen on the 19th instant, from a cut house at Potter- hanworth : two pairs of long leather Leggings, one pair are new, and fastens with straps and buckles, the others are old ones, and fastens with loops ; also a short slop, rolled collar, sewn up about 8 iuches in front, pockets each side with flaps. By a man of the following description, 20 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, dark hair, no whiskers, stout built, thin red face, and thick neck ; dressed in old dark giey cloth jacket, with a slit behind, and spotted with red and drab paint, old dark cord trousers, worn at bottoms, aud slit up inside of legs, old dark cloth cap with peak, and old lace- up boots, with a slit or cut behind ; was traced into Lincoln on the 20th instant, at 5 p. m., and was wearing a pair of the stolen leggings, and carrying the others ; he worked on the farm the day previous, helping to thrash. Information to be given to Inspector Brown, Kesteven County Police Station, Liucolu.— Bow- street, February 2o. Description of ROBT. TOWLER, of Grays, a butcher, charged with felony : about 46 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, stout build, fair complexion, light hair, whiskers, and moustache, pockmarked, slovenly gait, and stoops a little when walking. It is supposed he will emigrate. £ 10 reward - will be paid to any person giving such iuformation as " shall lead to his apprehension. Iuformation to be given to Inspector Freeman, Police Station, Orsett, or to Police Constable Pratt, Grays, Essex, who holds a warrant for Iris apprehension.— •— Bow- street, February 23. Absconded on the 19th instaut. charged with stealing £ 50 in Gold and Silver, the monies of his employer : a man, 32 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, fair complexion, light brown hair and whiskeis ( slight), small eyes, prominent nose, slight build, slouching gait; dressed in a brown Chesterfield overcoat, dark mixture cloth, billycock hat, stiff rim ; his wife resides at 12, Mack's- road, Blue Anchor- road, Ber- mondsey ; he is supposed to have gone to Liverpool, and will endeavour togotc America. - Metropolitan Police, E Division, January 23. Description of JOHN DREW, a groom, of Colebrook, Devon, charged with stealing £ 12, on the 19th instant, the propeity of his master, the Rev, J. H. C. Hobkirk, of Gun- ston House, Crediton, Devon: 28 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, light complexion, light brown hair aud vriiiskers, which reaches half way down his face, sharp features, aud has a large scar on one of his legs ( supposed left) ; dressed in hard bowler hat, grey stable jacket, vest, and breeches, black leather leggings, and lace- up boots. Likely to seek employ- ment in livery stables, or with tramway companies, very smart appearance, and is well up to his business. Iufor- mation to be giveu to Sergeant Phillips, Devon Constabulary, Crediton, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 23. Description of ELI BURNETT, commercial traveller, late in the tobacco trade, for whom a warrant for embezzle- ment is granted : he is about 35 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, medium build, small moustache and whiskers, inclined to be sandy. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Leeds.— Bow- street, February 23. Oakengates, on the 20th instant: two black cloth Jackets, Found in the possession of THOMAS CHILD, of Olney, one nearly new, men's size ; a pair of men's moleskin Trousers, who is committed for trial at the ensuing Assizes, on a charger nearly new ; a pair of strong lace- up Boots ; a pair of dirty of larceny : a double- barrelled Gun, thirteen bore, the barrels Stockings ; and a black soft billycock Hat; all men's size, are 26 iuches long, but appear to have been cut, black ramrod the property of Isaac Hooper. By a forgeman of the follow- j with brass top and screw, it has two loops, one in the stock, ing description, about 22 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, dark hair and complexion, hair cut short, little or no whiskers, and rather rough blotchy face; dressed in dark cloth overcoat, black cloth undercoat, imitation sealskin vest, dark grey trousers, with black stripes down the sides, side- spring boot?, and imitation gold albert chain. Supposed to be in Hanley, Staffordshire. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Richardson, Wellington, or to Sergeant Merricks, Oakengates, Salop.— Bow- street, February 23. Stolen on the 18th instaut, from a public- house iu Nant- wicli : a gold lever Watch, with white dial, steel hands, No. 5088, and a heavy- looking 9- carat secret- faceted gold Albert Guard, with heavy gold pendant, topaz stoDe with three sides, revolving on a swivel, attached. By a man of the following description, who lodged in the house two nights, and represented himself as a saddler iu search of work : about 35 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, dark whiskers and short moustache, rather large nose, medium build ; dressed iu a pilot monkey jacket, with velvet collar and silk quilted facings,' double- breasted black clotrli vest, dark broad striped trousers, fashionable felt hat, lace- up boots with brass eyelet- holes, and of respectable appearance. Iuformation to be given to Superintendent Laxton, Nantwich, Cheshire.— Bov- street, February 23. Description of a man who absconded from Rosedale, on the 16th instant, charged with larceny : he goes by the name of OLD WILLIE, about 55 j- ears of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 ins. high, fresh complexion, light brown hair, turning grey, bald on top of head, and stout figure ; dressed | in old blue pilot coat, rather long, dirty moleskin trousers aud vest, strong lace- up boots, aud dirty white felt hat. May be found on railways or any public- works. Information to be given to Superintendent Jonas, Pickering, or to Inspector Wilkinson, Rosedale, Yorkshire.— Bow- streel, February 23. Stolen from a dwelling- house in the parish of New Fulford, on the night of the 17th instant: a German silver Geneva Watch, black dial, white figures, ' Railway Time- keeper' priuted on the face, a white metal Guard, with two Keys, attached. BOB, 23 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, stout and smart build, red full face, dark brown hair, aud no whiskers ; dressed in dark grey tweed shooting coat and vest, dark cord tight- fitting trousers with raised seams, dark brown cap with rough sides turned up aud cloth peak, aud plain strong lace- up boots. The third is about 19 years of age, about 5 feet high, pro portionately built, dark complexion, dark curly hair, aud no whiskers ; dressed in light grey overcoat, dark coat under, tight- fitting cord trouseis with raised seatus, black cloth cap, turned up at sides and black peak, and plain strong lace- up boots. They sailed from London Bridge on the 18th instant, and landed at Hull the following day. The latter two speak the south country dialect, and are supposed to be rather of the gipsy tribe. Although £ 3 reward is offered for the apprehension of Deserters at the time, £ 2 only is payable at the expiration of 8 months, and £ 1 only at the i^ xpiration of 6 months from the date of desertion, and after the expiration of a complete year, no reward will be paid, except under' special circumstances.
