W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. r INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. On the 31st ultimo, the dead body of a man was found in the Rochdale Canal, near Union- st., Ancoats, Manchester, and is believed to have been in the water two or three weeks. The body is that of a man about 35 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches loug, proportionate make, dark brown hair, light orlpwn whiskers, (. light tauily moustache, and very regular tedth; there is a large wound at the back of tho left car ; the body was dressed in a dirty grey serge or tweed shooting coat, the lining and back of the sleeves being very much worn, a vest of the same material, a black cloth vest, a pair of cotton cord trousers, elastic- side boots, brown worsted stockings, a grey, black, and white plaid old woollen shirt, repaired with calico, and a dirty red neck scarf; in one of the coat pockets was a cotton muffler, with a blue border round three sides. The body has not been identified. The; clothing, & c., is now at Goulden- street Police Station, Man- chester, where information may be given. — Bow- street, January 7. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Further information respecting the Watch stolen from Mr. Joseph Bradley, at Wellington, Salop, Railway Station, I on the 27th ultimo, and advertised in the Police Gazette of the 29th ultimo, and following dates, the number of the watch is 36734. £\ reward will be paid by Mr. Bradley, on! the recovery of the watch, and conviction of the offender or | offenders. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent ltichardson, Wellington, Salop.— bow- street, January 16. 6 silver Dessert Spoons, marked ' J. F.' in gartsr, and marked 7 to 12. A £ 10 packet of Silver, and about £\ in Silver besides. 6 large and 6 small plated Forks, marked ' G.' 4 silver Tea Spoons, marked ' J. F.' in garter. 1 small silver Sugar Spoon, marked ' J. F. & E.' 1 double- barrelled Gun, marked ' Scott and Cook' between the barrels, and damaged stock. 1 large silver Fish Carver and Fork, pearl handles. 1 silver Fruit Saw. Whoever will give such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of tha offender or offenders, shall, on such conviction, receive a reward of £- 20 from the said Joshua Fellows, Esq., or in proportion to the amount recovered. Information to be given to the Superintendent of Police, Westbromwich, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, Jan. 19. Further information respecting the burglary at the house of Mr. Amen Anscombe, at the parish of Lindfield, Sussex, on the night of the 15th November last, and advertised jiu the Police Gazette of 28th November. A reward of £ 5 will be paid to any person giving information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Lewes, or to Superintendent Pocock, Cuckfield, Sussex.— Bow- street, January 16. During the night of the 14th instant or morning of the 15th, the office of Messrs. Thomas Williams and Co., timber merchants, Neath, were broken and entered, the whole of the drawers, & c., in the office ransacked, and a new pair of long water- tight Boots stolen therefrom. A chisel, such as is used by ship carpenters, was left behind, which had been used in an attempt to force opon an iron safe. The office of Mr. G. J. May, chain manufacturer, Neath, was also entered, but nothing has been missed. Information to be given to Head Constable Phillips, Neath, Glamorganshire.— Bow- street, January 16. Absconded from Radatock, Somersetshire, charged with breaking and entering an outbuilding and stealing therein a Hatchet and a Hand- saw, the property of Frances, Countess Waldegrave: GEORGE GULIFORD, 26 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, stout build, dark hair and whiskers, fresh complexion, and blue eyes; dressed when last seen in black monkey jacket, dark vest, grey trousers, and bowler hat, generally wears a muffler round the neck ; he has been working at Maesteg, Glamorganshire, where he is well known to the Police; a man named GEORGE ADAMS, who was in company with him at the time of the robbery, has been apprehended and sentenced to 2 months imprisonment at the last quarter sessions for the above offence. Information to be given to Superintendent Deggan, Police Office, Frome, or to Sergeant Whitting, Police Station, Kilmersdon, Radstock, Bath, Somerset, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, January 16. Stolen on the night of the lltli instant, from the parsonage, Charter House, Hinton, which was burglariously entered : a tortoise- shell Musical Box, 3s by 2} inches, plays two tunes, gold hinges and rim ; and a gold plated Picture, under glass cover on the top, of trees, stag, aud dogs. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Morgan, C'onnty Police Station, Upper Bristol- road, Bath.— Bow- street, January 14. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. During the r. ight of the 15th instant or early the next morning, the house of Mr. Beck, ironmonger, Halton Brook, near Runcorn, waa burglariously entered, and a tin Cash Box, with smalt brass haudle on top, painted oak colour, aud about 9 iuches long, containing a Sovereign, a Half ditto, 2s. in Silver, and two Memorandum Books— one has ' Cash Book' in gold letters on back, aud both have the owner's name, also that of James Handley written inside, aud Memo- randa relating to somo trade transactions, receipts for money paid, were stolen therefrom. Suspicion is attached to a number of tramps who were seen near the house the day before, all stout able- bodied men. Information to be given to Superintendent Aston, Police Station, Run- corn, Cheshire.— Bow- street, January 19. On the night of the 15th instant, the dwelling- house of Joshua Fellows, Esq., situate at Church Yale, in the parish of Westbromwich, in the county of Stafford, was burglariously broken into aud entered, and the following property stolen therein : 12 plated Dessert Kuives and Forks, pearl handles. 12 Fish Knives, plated, a dolphin engraved on each blade. 6 ditto, various patterns. 1 plated oval Cake Basket, with round twisted handle. 1 silvfer Sugar Basin, without glass, and Sugar Sifter, marked ' J. F.' in garter. 1 pair silver Sugar Tongs, marked ' J. F.' 2 plated Entree Dishes aud Covers, without handles, marked ' 3' and ' 4.' 1 silver Cruet Frame ( and 5 silver Tops of Bottles), antique, nearly round, richly chased. 1 silver- plated Sauce Stand for four Bottles. 1 Top of a gold pencilcase, white stone, with initials • J. F.' 1 silver Mustard Pot and silver Pepper Box. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen off Kerry Hill, on the 7th instant : four brown mare Ponies, with loug switch tails, aud unshod, two of them 7 years old, and iu foal, the other two rising 3 years old. They were seen near Montgomery on the 9th instant. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, New- town, Montgomeryshire.— Bow- street, January 19. A warrant has been granted for the apprehension of WILLIAM THOMAS, of Bissoe, in the parish of Kea, Cornwall, who is charged with stealing a Cow, from Mr. Ambrose Thomas, of the same place, on the 9th instant, which has since been recovered, and is now iu the possession of the Police : he is 35 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, sallow complexion, dark hair and whiskers, two front top teeth overlap each other, and are large ; dressed in a suit of dark clothes, and high poll hat, all rather shabby ; he is a tin dresser, but sometimes works as a gardener, is most likely to be in Wales. Information to be friven to Superintendent Marshall, County Police, Tiuro, Cornwall. — Bow- street, January 19. The three men advertised in the Police Gazette of the 9th instant, charged with stealing the Horse from Haslemere, Surrey, has been apprehended aud remanded at the County Police Station, Guildford, until the 17th instaut: Oue gave the name of THOMAS MOORE, 28 years of age, a fish hawker, of No. 5, London- road, Portsea, 5 feet inches high, dark hair, and small whisKers; dressed in tweed striped trousers and waistcoat, long blue pilot rough cloth coat, and round felt hat. Another gave tho name of THOMAS PHILLIPS, a fowl dealer, of No. 13, London- road, Portsea, 28 years of aje, 5 feet 7i inches high, fresh complexion, dark hair, and small whiskers ; dressed in cord trousers, fitting tight to the legs, tweed coat and waistcoat, long blue rough cloth coat, and round felt hat, The other gave the name of THOMAS GREEN, a fish hawker, of Gosport, 27 years' of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, sallow complexion, light brown hair, whiskers shaved off; dressed in a snuff- coloured suit, trousers fitting tight to the legs, large white pearl buttons on coat and waistcoat, and hairy cap. In their possession was found a bay cob gelding, of which they refuse to give any account; the horse stolen from Haslemere has not been recovered. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Barker, Surrey Constabulary, Guildford.— Bow- street, January 16. Stolen from Aston Park, between 8 p. m. on the 7th, and 7 a. m. on the 8tU instant : a half- bred bay blood Mare, rising 7 years old, about 14i hands high, has a loose mane and switch tail; and a brown Mare, aged, 13J hands high, with long mane and tail, blind of left eye, and very heavy in foal. £ 5 reward will be paid to any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Superintendent Gallaway, Police Station, Aston, near Birmingham.— Bow- st, January 14, Stolen from Birkenhead, on the morning of the 9th. instant: a brown mare Cob, rising 9 years old, 14 hands high, lately clipped, hog mane, hind fetlock joints white and near fore t'itlock white; and a two- wheeled half Waggonette, painted dark green, white line on shafts aud wheels, light cane- work all round, door behind, built at Carlisle. By a man, 4( 1 years of age, 5 feet 4 iuches high, medium build, dark complexion, long features, pointed nose and chin, thick short sandy- brown whiskers aud moustache ; dressed in blue cloth overcoat, dark trousers, and silk hat. Also stolen, at the same time: a light chestnut Ilorse, rising 8 yeaii old, about 15 hands 1 inch high, lately clipped, near hind leg recently blistered, a few white hairs ou the off side, from the spur. By a man, about 50 years of age, about 5 feet 3 iuches high, stout build, dark complexion, full face, no whiskers or moustache; dressed in blue pilot overcoat striped trousers, hard felt hat, and white mutilar j has the appearauce of a farmer. Information to be ^ iveu to the Head Constable, Birkenhead, Cheshire.— Btf.£- 2freet, January 14. • Fouud on the 5th instant, supposed to have been stolen : a red and white yearling Calf, iu good condition. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Freeman, Stourbridge, Worcestershire.— Bow- street, January 14. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Further information respecting JOHN BOYD, adver- tised in the Police Gazette of the 12th, instant, who committed the robbery at the ' Grasshopper' public- house, Maidstone, on the 9th inst., when he stole, in addition to the property already described, a Shilling with a hole in it, a counterfeit ditto, and two foreign silver Coins ( halfpeuny aucJ penny pieces): he enlisted as a Sapper in 39th Company, Royal Engineers, No. 12322, at Westminster, ou the 13th No- vember last, and joined at Chatham on the 18th, from which place he deserted on the 4th instant. Information to be given to the Head Constable, Police Office, Maidstone, Kent. — Bow- street, January 19. Description of a woman giving the name of MARY alias ANN WILLIAMS, states she is a native of Chester, charged with larceny from a lodging- house at Mold ; site is about 35 years of age, tall, well made, dark brown loose curley hair, lost two of her upper front teeth, large nose ; diessed in light skirt with dark body, no bonnet or hat, gene- rally wears an old brown shawl over her head. Left on the 13th instant. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Adams, or to the Inspector, Mold, Flintshire.— Bow- street, January 19. Stolen from a hotel in Chesterfield : two Soup Ladles, plain pattern ; and two Table Spoons, plain pattern, one has the letters ' G. S.' ou back of handle, which turns upwards, and the other may be marked ' R. T. M.' or some other letters, all silver. ' By a man ( who left without paying his bill) from 35 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 iuches high, sallow complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, bushy beard aud whiskers, rather sandy, broad shouldered, aud rather bow- legged ; dressed in a" long light overcoat, light trousers, Hick under coat, aud silk hat ; he carries an umbrella aud black leather bag. Information to be given to Head Constable Home, Chesterfield, Derbyshire.— Bow- street, January 19. Absconded on the 14th instant, charged with stealing. £ 9 14s. 3d., the moneys of his master i a youth, 18 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, sallow complexion, black hair, dark brown eyes, and pockmarked ; dressed iu dark mixture coat and trousers, black cap with French peak, aud aide- spring boots.— Metropolitan Police, H Division, January 19. Absconded on the 14th instant, from Woolwich, charged with stealiug £~ Os. 3d. the moneys of Her Majesty's Government : a man 23 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, aud second toe of both feet contracted ; dressed iu regimentals. — Metropolitan Police^ R Division, January 19. Absconded from Middlesborough, on the 11th instant, charged with stealing Money: NICHOLAS PATTISON, a weigh clerk, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, sallow complexion, thin face," black hair, whiskers, and moustache, supposed shaved off; generally wears dark grey clothes, and occasionally a brown overcoat. He is a native of Aycliffe, near Darlington, and has been employed generally on railways. He was at Hartlepool ou the 13th instant, and stated he should go Northwards. He was ' convicted at Durham Assizei for forgery iu 1866, aud sentenced to two years POLICE GAZETTE. imprisonment. Absconded from ' Warminster, Wilts, at 2 p. m. on the 12fh instant: a young woman, 21 years of age, short and stout, round full features, and light hair; dressed in grey linsey dress, black jacket, with fringe behind, black velvet hat, with small black feather, new kid Wits, and carrying a small black leather bag ; she is charged with stealing £ 20 in Gold and Silver. Is likely to try to emigrate. Information to be given to Superintendent Abbott, Warminster, Wilts. — How- street, January 16. Description of JAMES ALDRED, who absconded on the 6th instant, charged on a warrant with embezzlement : about 35 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, light curly hair, parted down tha middle, light ruddy complexion, and of smart api> earance. Information to be given to Chief Constable Palin, Detective Department, Town liali, Man- chester.— Bow- street, January 16. A warrant is issued against SAMUEL BRAHAM, a jeweller, late of Brighton, charged with stealing £ 800 worth of Jewellery : he is 38 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark hair, whiskers, and moustache, ( pointed, inclined to s& ndv); dressed respectable. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Williamson, Detective Department, Great Scotland Yard, London, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Metropolitan Police, Jauua< y 16. Absconded from Radstock, Somersetshire, on the 5th instant, charged with embezzlement : JESSE, alias JOHN REED, a shoemaker, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, light complexion, long features, blue eyes, turn- up nose, light whiskers and monstache ; dressed when he left in a mixture suit; is well known in Abertellery and Tredegar, Monmouthshire, and has b « en in business in Monmouthshire. Information to be given to Superintendent Deggan, Police Office, Frome ; to Sergeant Whitting, or to Police Constable Lewis, Radstock, Somersetshire.— Bow- street, January 16. Description of a man charged at Middlesborough with felonv on the 14th instant, who goes by the name of THREE FINGERED JACK, alias TUMBLER, a native of Scot- land, and by trade ii plasterer : about 28 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, red face, dark hair, no whiskers, and lost first two lingers on right hand ; dressed in a dark tweed coat, light tweed trousers, and strong laee- up boots cut at the toes. Information to be given to Chief Constable Sanger son, Chief Constable's Office, Middlesborough, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, January 16. Description of WILLIAM SMURTHWAITE, who is charged with larceny at Sherburn Hill, Durham : a convict license holder, Reg. No. 1654, 27| years of age, 5 feet 6 ins. high, fair complexion, auburn hair, hazel eyes, has a crucifix and full rigged ship on right arm, and blue liues on chest. He was convicted at Durham Sessions on the 21st February, 1868, and sentenced to 7 pears penal s « rvitude. Was liberated on license on the 12th November, 1873. Information to ba given to Durham.- Superintendent Dunn, - Bow- street, January 16. County \ Constabulary, I a black - enamel Ring - a man, 30 years of age, 5 feet 8i inches high, fresh complexion, blue eyes ; supposed dressed in the stolen clothes. - - Metropolitan PMoe, P Division, January 14. Absconded on the 9th instant, charged with embezzling £ 5, the moneys of his master : a man, 35 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fair complexion, light hair, sandy whiskers ; dressed in grey coat and trousers, sidespring boots, and billy- cock hat.— Metropolitan Police, R Division, January 14. Description of a man who absconded from the city of Lincoln, on the 12th instant, charged with stealing a £ 5 Lincoln Bank Note, and £ 40 in Gold and Silver Monies, from a beerhouse, where he had lodged two nights : 22 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, brown hair cut short, small sandy moustache, and no whiskers ; dressed in a grey cloth cap fitting tight to his head, dark tweed cutaway coat, dark mixture vest and trousers, blue and white necktie, white shirt, and black and white muffler; has been a soldier, and associates with footracing men. Information to be given to Chief Constable Mansell, Lincoln.— Bow- street, January 14. Stolen from the house of John Twyford, at Matlock Bank, on the 6th instant: an old- fashioned black cloth Coat, rounded laps, no buttons on b « hind, side pockets, and left inside breast pocket; a double- breasted black cloth Vest, made with three buttons on each side ; and a black cloth Vest, buttons up to the throat, all much worn. By WILLIAM LILLY, labourer, who when last seen was wearing the stolen coat on the top of his own clothing, which are of a light brown cloth, and a light tweed cap, hooked down at the front: he is 27 years of ; ige, about 5 feet 6 ins. high, light complexion, no whiskers, light sandy moustache and hair, rather stout, and well built: he has been previously convicted of larceny. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Sharpe, Wirksworth, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, January 14. Absconded from Henley- on- Thames, Oxon, on the Gtli instant, charged with stealing from an upholsterer's shop, where he had been lately employed ; a pair of upholsterer's Scissors, a 3- feet Rule, a Hammer, and a Screw Driver. He gave his name WILLIAM SMITH, and said he belonged to the West end of London, and that he worked at Messrs. Druce and Co., Baker- street, about 3 months ago, he is an upholsterer by trade, very much addicted to drinking, and as a rule lodges at low public- houses, about 36 years of age, about 5 feet 9 inches high, fair complexion, light brown hair, whiskers, and moustache, and carries his head forward when walking; dressed in mixed brown coat and trousers, hard felt hat, and side- spring boots, strapped across the front. Information to bo given to Superintendent Coates, Henley- on- Thames, Oxon, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- street, January 14. Further information respecting GOODWIN GOOD YOUNG, charged with embezzlement, described in the Police Gazette of the 26th ultimo. The Cockermouth Per- manent Benefit Building Society- will pay £ 15 for Young's apprehension. Information to be given to Superintendent Spencer, Cockermouth, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle, Cumberland.— Bow- street, January 14. Absconded on the 8th instant, charged with embezzling £ 2", the moneys of his master : a mau 24 years of age, 6 feet 8 inches high, pale complexion, dark hair, frock coat, vest, ; uid trousers, and black folt hat.— Metropolitan Police, H Division, January 16. Absconded on the 11th instant, charged with embezzling £ 7, the moneys of his master : a man 30 years of age, o feet 7 inches high, dark complexion, hair, and whiskers; dressed iu light overcoat and trousers, lace- up boots, and billycock hat.— Metropolitan Police, T Division, January 16. Absconded on the 9th instant, charged with stealing £ 2 : a man 20 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, pale complexion, ' dark hair and eyes ; dressed in light coat, dark mixture trousers and vest, and Oxford hat.— Metropolitan Police, T Division, January 16. Stolen from the person of William Botting, at Balcombe, Sussex, on the 27th August last : a silver Watch, recovered. By JOHN CONSTABLE, wiio has absconded ; ho is about 20 years of age, 6 feet 8 or 9 inches high, fair complexion, light eves, light hair, little or no whiskers, slight made, and the left leg a little shorter than the right ; supposed dressed iu a white slop, cord trousers, dark monkey jacket, also red ami white cricketing cap; lately resided at Balcombe, is single, and a form labourer. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Lewes, or to Superintendent Pocock, Onckfield, Sussex, who holds tho warrant for his apprehen- sion.— Row- street, January 16. Stolen from a dwelling- house at Westhoughton, near Bolton- le- iloors, Lancashire, on the morning of tho 12th instant : a silver hunting Watch, with seconds baud, blue dial, gold fingers, aud double oases, ' American Watch Com- pany ' engraved en dial, ' Walter Mass,' or ' Bartley,' on tho works, there is also engraved on the outside cases three flowers on one side and two ditto on the other side ; had a small steel Chain attached. By a man who lodged in the house about a week and alisconded on the morning of the robbery : he is about 5 feet 3 inches high, light hair, light complexion, dark brown eyesj% irge feet ; dressed in old cord jacket with moleskin sleeves and back lined with the same material, black cloth trousers and vest which are too large for him, and ail much worn, blue plaid cap, and new clogs ; walks as if weak in the legs; he stated he was a native of Church, near Accrington, Lancashire. Information to be given to the Superintendent, County Constabulary, Town Hall, Little Bolton, Lancashire.- Bow- street, January 16.
