POLICE GAZETTE. prtltsM Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MB. W. D. BURNAEY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, » London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should bo made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence chargcd, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any aiticle in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. On the 31st ultimo, the dead body of a man was found in the Rochdale Canal, near Union- st., Ancoats, Manchester, and is believed to have been in the water two or three weeks. The body is that of a man about 35 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches long, proportionate make, dark brown hair, light brown whiskers, slight sandy moustache, and very regular teeth ; there is a large wound at the baek of the left ear ; the body was dressed in a dirty grey serge or tweed shooting coat, the lining and back of the sleeves being very much worn, a vest of the same material, a black cloth vest, a pair of cotton cord trousers, elastic- side boots, brown worsted stockings, a grey, black, and white plaid old woollen shirt, repaired with calico, and a dirty red neck scarf; in one of the coat pockets was a cotton muffler, with a blue border round three sides. The body has not been identified. The clothing, & c., is now at Goulden- street Police Station, Man- chester, where information may be given. — Bow- street, January 7. On the morning of the 28th ultimo, the dead Body of a fully developed newly- born female Child was found in the Wallhead reservoir, in the borough of Rochdale, and on the 30th ultimo a verdict of ' Wilful murder against some person or persons unknown' was returned by the coroner's jury. The body was stitched up in coarse sacking, tied round the middle with white tape. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Rochdale, Lancashire,— Bow- street, January 5. Description of THOMAS DRISCOLL, who absconded from Bristol about the 23rd ultimo, charged, under the coroner's warrant, with the manslaughter of Michael Quin, at Bristol, on the 21st ult. : he is an Irishman, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark hair cut short, broad round shoulders, rather stout build, pale face, bridge of nose rather flat, turns up at end, black beard on chin, walks with a swaggering gait, speaks with the London accent, has a low expression of countenance, and is addicted to drink ; dressed generally, when in working clothes, in monkey jacket, with white duck jacket underneath, cord trousers, which he ties below the knee, and dark close- fitting cap, but when other- wise dressed, wears a long dark cloth coat; he works about shipping, and has been employed in the neighbourhood of St. Katherine's Docks and Tooley- street, London. Informa- tion to be given to Chief Superintendent Handcock, Police Office, Bristol, who holds the warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, January 5. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of Mr. J. Bradley, of Drayton, on the evening of the 27th instant, at Wellington ( Salop) Railway Station: a patent lever silver Watch, with * J. Bradley' engraved on the inside of outer ease. Infor- mation to be given to Chief Superintendent Richardson, Wellington, Salop.— Bow- street, December £ 9. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. During the night of the 2nd instant, the granary of Joseph Shaw, of Huggate, was broken into, and an old Ham, weighing about 2 stones, a side of old Bacon, about 5 stones, and a shoulder of Bacon, about 2 stones, were stolen there- from. Information to be given to Superintendent Cordukes, East Riding Constabulary, Pocklington, York.— Bow- street, January 7. During the night of the 3rd instant the house of Mr. Renville, White Bridge Farm, near Horsham, was broken into and the following property stolen : a black cloth Jacket with pockets at the side, and mended inside near one of the pockets; a pair of light lace- up Boots ; a silver Watch, maker—' Fowl, East Grinstead', with steel Chain attached ; a pair of horse- clipping Scissors, and a pair of Common ones ; two pairs of Spectacles, one a brass frame and the other steel. A man, who was seen near the farm is suspected, about 22 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, daik hair and complexion, and thin appearance : dressed in a corduroy jacket and trou- sers, and black billycock hat. Stated he should go to Ports- mouth and give himself up as a deserter from the Marines. Information to be given to Superintendent Henderson, West Sussex Constabulary, Horsham.— Bow- street, January 7. On the night of the 6th, or early the following morning, the premises of William Robinson, sailor's clothier and out- fitter, High- street, Runcorn, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : six pairs of oilskin Trousers, boy's size, marked ' 4s. 6d.'; six ditto Coats, four double make, marked ' 10s. 6d. and lis. 6d.'; two ditto Coats, single make ; two or three half- lined ditto ; six pairs of elastic sides and half Wellington Boots, much soiled, but have not been worn ; three Brushes, marked on backs, dirt, blacking, and polishing; and a roller Towel, marked 1W. R.' in large letters in ink. Also stolen during same time, and supposed by some person from the adjoining back yard : a white flannel Singlet, and a ditto Petticoat, latter marked ' W. Hailwood.' Information to be given to Superintendent Aston, Police Station, Runcorn, Cheshire.— Bow- street, January 7. Between 9 a. m. and 9 p. m. on the 30th ultimo, the dwelling- house of Mr. Redman, of Virginia Water, was broken into, and the following property stolen therein : a French Clock, on four cherry- wood pillars, mahogany base, and gilt top; two Tops of a cruet stand, silver; and four German silver Forks. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Bungard, Surrey Constabulary, Chertsey.— Bow- street, January 5. During the night of the 25th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. John Leech, of Loddon, farming bailiff, was broken into and entered, and the following articles stolen therein : a brown leather clasp Purse, containing £ 1 5s. in Silver; a pair- case silver Watch, No. 11461, maker Charles Clayton, a steel Chain, two common Keys, and an old Seal with stone out, attached; and a silver Geneva Watch, No. 36,025, a black silk Guard and common Key attached. Whoever will give such information to Superintendent Riches, Loddon, Norfolk, as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders, shall receive £ 2 reward.— Bow stred, December 31. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen from a stable at Harrogate, between 6' 45 and 9 p. m. on the 5th instant: a bay Mare, rising 4 years old, 15 hands high, square cut tail rather long, splinter inside left knee, white star on forehead, and white stripe down face. Information to be given ac the Superintendent's Office, Knaresborough, Yorks.— Bow- street, January 7. Stolen about a month since from a field at Redland's Farm, at Evercreech, Somerset: a white two- year old Heifer, marked in the right ear. Information jto be given to Deputy Chief Constable Bisgood, Glastonbury, or Sergeant Williams, Shepton Mallet, Somerset.— Bow- street, January 5. Stolen on the 1st instant, from Guildford : a black mare Pony, recently clipped, in good condition, rubbed on right side by trace ; also a four- wheel Chaise, painted green with white lines, lined with blue cloth, small seat behind; and a set of plated Harness. By a man of the following description, who hired the above, and gave the name of REYNOLDS, about 5 feet 8 inches high, proportionate built, pale com- plexion, dark bushy whiskers; dressed in a dark grey suit, black tall hat, is of gentlemanly appearance. Information to be given to Superintendent Law, Borough Police, Guildford, Surrey.— Bow- street, January 5. Stolen on the 28th ultimo, from Union Cross Farm, West Bromwich : 2 Ponies, one cream colour, about 11 hands high, agtd, in good condition, brand mark ' 3' on each side of ribs, and lost two front teeth; the other is a black horse Pony, 13 hands high, aged, good condition, and white spot saddle mark on back. Information to be given to Sergeant Smith, Police Station, Greets Green, West Bromwich, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, January 2. Further information respecting the bay Mare stolen from Park Farm, Oldlani Common, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 15th ultimo : the Mare had a flowing mane and long tail, and both sides were rubbed by plough chains. Two men of the following description were seen with a mare the same night, going in the direction of Chippenham, Wilts : One about 35 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, and dark whiskers ; dressed in dark overcoat, cord trousers, soft bowler hat, and white muffler. The other about 20 years of age, about 5 feet 5 inches high ; dressed in cord trousers, dirty slop, and soft bowler hat. They had the appearance of low horse dealers. £ 10 reward will be paid on conviction of the offender or offenders, on application to Mr. E. Williams, Oldland Common ; to Superintendent Rawle, Fishponds ; or to Sergeant Morley, Oldiand Common, Gloucestershire.— Bmo- street, January 2. Stolen from a field at Burnhill- green, Patshull, on the 16th ultimo : a bay cob Horse, 8 years old, about 14 hands high, right knee broken, star on forehead, little white on near heel, and lump on loin. Information to be given to Inspector McCrea, Tettenhall, Wolverhampton, or to Police Coustable Cragg, Police Station, Pattingham.— Bow- street, January 2. Stolen from the premises of the ' Wire Trellis' inn, at Barnsley, Yorkshire, on the night of the 28th ultimo : a dark brown Mare, aged, about 17 hands high, straight fetlock, and shakes its hind legs when walking. Also, from a field at Piatt's Common, on the same night: a black Horse, aged, 14£ hands high, cut mark on near eye, long mane and tail, and in good condition. And, a black Horse, aged, 15 hands high, white face, hair rubbed off tail, and in good condition. Information to be given to Superintendent Sykes, West Riding Constabulary, Barnsley.— Bow- street, January 2. Stolen from Rhug Park, between the 12th and the 20th instant: forty Welsh Ewes, the property of Thomas Evans, point of left ear cut, and point of right ear split, pitch mark ' T. E.' on left side, and supposed the letter ' W.' on right, tails half cut, and raddled on shoulders ; also five Ewes, of larger size, supposed to be South Downs, three of them pitch marked ' T. W.', one of them was black. Infor- mation to be given to Sergeant Williams, Corwen, Merioneth. — Bow- street, December 29. Further information respecting the black Mare stolen from Boshill Farm, Dorking, on the night of the 9th instant, and advertised in the Police Gazette of the 12th instant: she has a seton mark on near hip, and a lump on inside of off' fore leg. The bay Pony stolen at the same time and place has not yet been found. Information to be given to Super- intendent Lambert, Surrey Constabulary, Dorking.— Bow- street, December 29. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Absconded, charged with stealing a Goose, the property of William Parsons, on the night of the 3rd instant: ALBERT WATSON, a labourer, about 5 feet < 3 inches high, light complexion, very thin face, small whiskers and long thin nose ; a native of Rolvenden, Kent; dressed in a short white slop, cord trousers, and thick lace- up boots. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Butcher, Rye, Sussex.— Bow- street, January 7, Absconded on the 29th ultimo, from Kingston, charged with embezzling £ 4 10s. : ROBERT WILLIAM DELLY, 38 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, florid complexion, long nose, red neck, brown curly hair, scar over eye ; dressed respectably, and wore a high hat, with mourning band Warrant issued.— Metropolitan Police, V Division, January 7" Absconded on the 2nd instant, charged with embezzling £ 2 6s. : a man, 38 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, sallow complexion, dark hair, no whiskers, slight moustache, high forehead ; dressed in a light brown overcoat, black undercoat, tweed trousers, felt hat; speaks English imperfectly.— Metro- politan Police, D Division, January 7. Absconded on the 3rd instant, from Goswell- road, charged with stealing £ 5 2s., the monies of his master : a man, 23 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fair complexion, fair hair ; dressed in dark coat and trousers, and felt hat; a butcher.— Metropolitan Police, G Division, January 7. Further information respecting GEORGE HEIGHO, late relieving officer to the Orsett Poor Law Union, adver- tised in the Police Gazette of the 12th ultimo : he has a large scar over the right temple, Jand| two or three contracted fingers on the left hand. £ 10 reward is offered by the Guai- dians of the above union for his apprehension. Information to be given to Inspector Freeman, Constabulary Station, Orsett, Essex.— Bow- street, January 7. Absconded on the 6th instant, from Guildford, a journeyman tailor, charged with stealing a £ 10 Bank Note : he is about 23 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, rather stout, dark complexion, black hair and moustache, red spots on face, scar on chin, apparently from a burn, slightly pockpitted, awkward walk, stoops, belongs to the Tailors' Society, and is a native of Gloucestershire ; dressed in a blue jacket, velvet collar, dark trousers, black hat; he will probably try to emigrate to America. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Law, Borough Police, Guildford, Surrey.— Bow- street, January 7. Stolen on the 1st instant, from the steam ship Santander, lying at Nicholson's Wharf : one suit of Oilskins ; three pairs of Trousers ; three Shirts; one blue Overcoat ; one winsey Jacket; three pairs of Drawers ; three pairs of Stockings ; one Muffler; and one Scarf. By a man 30 years of age ; 5 feet 7 inches high, dark complexion, hair, and tuft on chin, and peculiar nose ; dressed in short blue jacket, cloth cap, peak over forehead, and is a native of Belfast.— Metropolitan Police, Thames Division, January 7. Description of Sergeant FREDERICK BROOKER, 2nd Battalion Scots Fusilier Guards, who absconded from Dublin on the 31st ult., charged with having misappropriated the proceeds of the sale of Goods, the property of the sergeants' mess of the battalion, whilst employed as caterer to the detachment at Pigeon House Fort, to the value of £ 25 : about 27 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fair complexion, light brown hair, brown eyes, had a moustache, hair very thin at crown of head, rather bow- legged, and speaks very rapidly ; dressed in a black pilot jacket, with velvet collar P O L I C E G A Z E T T E. Januar 7. • with, two rows of black buttons down the front, light grey tweed trousers and vest, black jerry hat, black scarf with orange stripes, and white stand- up collar ; he carried a courier bag over his shoulder, and was accompanied by a woman ; he is a native of Cheltenham, and by trade a chimney sweep. Information to be given to the Officer Commanding Scots Fusilier Guards, Horse Guards, London, S. W., or to the Officer Commanding 2nd Battalion Scots Fusilier Guards at Dublin.— Bow- street, January 7. ALEY FROSTICK and FRANCIS ATTWOOD, who absconded from the borough of Maldon on the 8th ultimo, charged upon warrants with feloniously stealing from the dwelling- house of Thomas Frostick, the husband of Aley Frostick, North- street, Maldon : three Skirts and nine- teen packages of Drapery and Silks, the goods and chattel of the said Thomas Frostick, valued £ 30. Aley Frostick is 44 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fresh complexion, grey bair, light eyebrows, full fat face, and very muscular, weigh- ing about 18 to 20 stone ; she will most likely be found in company with the young man who absconded with her, and is charged with the same offence, named Francis Attwood, 17 or 18 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, a chimney- sweeper, fair comjdexion, brown hair, and no whiskers ; dressed when last seen at Maldon in a monkey jacket, dark cord trousers and cap, and has in his possessisn a pedlar's • certificate, granted at Maldon on the 6th October, 1873, and signed by Wm. King, chief constable, in the name of ' Francis Attwood, Hythe, Maldon.' Aley Frostick has her little boy, Edward Frostick, with her, who is 11 years of age, very short and thick made, most likely will be wearing a dark velvet jacket with large buttons and close- fitting cap, dark cord trousers, fitting tight to the leg. They are supposed to have gone to Sunderland, near South Dock. Information to be giv> en to Chief Constable King, Maldon, Essex, who holds warrants for their apprehension.— Bow- street, January 5. Absconded from Elstead, Surrey, on the 27th ultimo, charged with stealing a £ 5 Bank of England Note, and a Cheque for £ 10 2s. 6d., which he was entrusted with, to get cashed at Farnham, the monies and property of Mrs. Caroline Augusta Marshall: WILLIAM PARSONS, 57 years of age, • about 5 feet 5 inches high, sallow complexion, hair and whis- kers turning grey, stoops when walking ; dressed when last • seen in an old brown cloth coat, dark grey vest, cord trousers, brown silk neckerchief, elastic- side boots, and a low- crowned black hat ; was seen in Billingsgate Market, on Monday the 29th ultimo. Information to be given to Superintendent Newland, Surrey Constabulary, Farnham, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Boio- street, Jamiary 5. Description of JOSEPH BRERETON, charged, at Warrington, with stealing a blue pilot Overcoat; a pair of shepherd's plaid Trousers and Vest ( both recovered, having been pledged by him at Wigan), from his lodgings on the 18th ultimo ; and a glazier's Diamond and other Tools, from the shop of his employer : about 18 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, light complexion and hair, small eyes, no • whiskers or moustache, and turns his feet outwards when walking; is a plumber, glazier, gasfitter, and painter, and bas worked at Leigh, Bolton, Halshan Moor, and Liverpool, Lancashire. Information to be given to Chief Constable Hunt, Borough Police, Warrington, Lancaster.— Bow- street, January 5. Description of WILLIAM SMITH, alias TIDBALL, who is charged at Aldershot with stealing the following articles : six Seals, one small, crest dove with olive branch ; one old oval, coat- of- arms, three spears' heads ; QJIQ old coat- tof- arms, three spears' heads quartered with three wheat- sheaves ; one old revolving, classical engraving on both sides; one old revolving, engraved on one side, compass on the other ; one old yellow stone, engraved man's head; one spade Guinea; a very old twisted silk Purse, brass beads and tassel, brass portmonnaie, opening, three inches in depth ; a silver Albert, made of old silver neckchain, twisted, with plain bar ; a ditto, home made, plain links and bar. He is 20 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, well built, full face, fresh complexion, light brown hair, small light moustache, no whiskers, and brown eyes; dressed in a grey tweed suit, officer's servant style ; lie enlisted at Portsmouth, on the 31st August, 1872, into the 104th Regiment, and deserted on the 28th December, 1873, from Aldershot. He has friends, and corresponds with a young woman, at Honiton, Devon. Infor- matiou to be given to Superintendent Troke, Hants Con- stabulary, Aldershot.— Bow- street, January 5. Description of THOMAS PLATTS, a brewer's traveller, who absconded from Sheffield on the 23rd ultimo, charged with embezzling a large sum of money, the property of his masters, Messrs. Bradley Brothers, brewers, Soho Brewery, Sheffield : he is about 32 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, pale sallow complexion, dark hair and eyes ( with a cast in them), slight impediment in his speech, moves his head from side to side when speaking, has a nervous habit of fingering his chin when spoken to, and rather in- kneed ; dressed when he absconded in a dark blue overcoat, with velvet collar, and low- crowned brown felt hat ; he is a native of Dronfield, in the county of Derby, but has lately resided in Napier- street, Sheffield. £ 5 reward will be paid by Messrs. Bradley Brothers to any person who will give suck information as shall lead to the apprehension of the said Thomas Platts. Information to be given to Chisf Constable Jackson, Sheffield, Yorkshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. - Bow- street, January 2. Absconded from Barnstaple, on the 26th instant, charged with embezzlement: JOHNSON WEBB, 16 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark brown hair, florid complexion, Roman nose, and of genteel appearance; dressed in brown mixture coat and vest, black trousers, and at times wears a black overcoat; has lately been a clerk in a printer's office. Supposed gone to some seaport, with tiie intention of going to sea. A warrant is issued for his apprehension. Informa- tion to be given to Head Constable Longhurst, Barnstaple, Devon.— Bow- street, December 31. Desci iption of AMOS WALKER, formerly of Swaffham, a commercial traveller, who absconded on the 28th ultimo, charged on a warrant with embezzling a large amount of money : he is abont 30 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair and whiskers, growing down the face and under chin ; he was seen a few days since in the neighbourhood of Islington, and is connected with the beer, wine, and spirit trade. All expences will be paid on his apprehension. Information to be given to Superintendent Lambley, Swaffham, Norfolk.— Bow- street, December 31. Description of EDWIN ROBERTS, a tramping shoe- maker or rivetter, who absconded from Oakengates, Salop, on the 18th instant, charged on a warrant with being the bailee of a silver verge Watch on the 18th instant, the property of Henry Didlock; also of a silver Geneva Hunting Watch, maker La Trobe, 15, College Green, Bristol, No, 52696 ; and an English verge Watch, No, 5889, the property of Mr. Joseph Rushton, watchmaker, Oakengates : he is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark hair and complexion, little beard at end of chin ; dressed in black cloth coat and troussrs, brown vest, and soft black billycock hat ; is accom- panied by his wife and a little boy ; the wife is about 35 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, pale complexion, has a cast in both eyes, and auburn hair ; the little boy is about 4 years of age, fair complexion, and curly hair. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Richardson, Wellington, or to Sergeant Merricks, Oakengates, Salop, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, Dec. 31. Stolen during the night of the 19th instant, from the dwelling- house of George Hegley, of Spinkhill: one blue pilot Jacket with velvet collar and pockets outside ; one black cloth Vest; one pair of dark tweed Trousers; one pair of light lace- up Boots without nails ; and two Scarfs : the pro- perty of Michael Martin. Also at the same time : one black cloth Jacket with velvet collar ; one pair of light tweed Trousers; and one pair of elastic side Boots; the property of Patrick Higgins. By a man of the following description, charged under a warrant: JAMES WOODCOCK, stone- mason, but has lately worked as a lahourer, 22 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, light bair, no whiskers, red face, is a native of Clowne. Derbyshire ; has been in the army about two years. He will most likely be wearing part of the stolen clothes, as he left part of his own behind. Information to be given to Superintendent Cruit, Eckington, Derbyshire.— Bow- street, December 29. FRAUDS AND AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS.
