As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor miut be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. MURDERED MALICIOUSLY On the 21st instant, the dead body of a newly- born male Infant was found in a pond at Stroud Green, Greenham, near Newbury. The body was wrapped in brown paper and a piece of black alpaca bound tightly round with strong twine, and presented uumistakeable appearances of having been strangled ; according to the medical evidence it appeared to have been in the water about a week. At an inquest held on the 22nd instant the jury returned a verdict [ of ' Wilful Murder' against some person or persons unknown. Informa- tion. to be given to Inspector Bennett, Berks Constabulary, Newbury.— Bow- street, December 26. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of Mr. J. Bradley, of Drayton, • on the evening of the 27th instant, at Wellington ( Salop) ' Railway Station: a patent lever silver Watch, with • J. Bradley' engraved on the inside of outer case. Infor- mation to be given to Chief Superintendent Richardson, Wellington, Salop— Bow- street, December 29. Stolen from the person of William Young, in a beerhouse at East Grinstead, on the 12th instant ; a double- cased silver verge Watch, maker's name 1 Stephen Crundwell, Tunbridge, No. 8571.' Information to be given to Superintendent Kennard, East Grinstead, Sussex.— Bow- street, December 22, Stolen from the person in the city of Durham, on the night of the 20th July last, a silver patent lever Watch, silver tace, gold figures, nearly new, maker Waterfield, Willington, with gold albert Guard ( long links) and locket ( engraved ' Forget me not'). Information to be given to Chief Con- stable Wilson, Durham City.— Bow- street, December 22. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. During the night of the 25th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. John Leech, of Loddon, farming bailiff, was broken into and entered, and the following articles stolen therein : a brown leather clasp Purse, containing £ 1 5s. in Silver ; a paiiMJase silver Watch, No. 11461, maker Charles Clayton, a steel Chain, two common Keys, and an old Seal with stone out, attached; and a silver Geneva Watch, No. 36,025, a black silk Guard and common Key attached. Whoever will give such information to Superintendent Riches, Loddon, Norfolk, as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders, shall receive £ 2 reward.— Bow- strett, December 31. Between 6 and 7 p. m. on the 21st inst, the house of Edward Davies, of the Adwyr, near Wrexham, tailor and clothier, was broken into by means of breaking the lock off the back door, and a Cash Box containing £ 100 10s. in gold, ene £ 5 Note of the N. and S. Wales Bank, and £ 3 in Silver, was stolen from the bed- room. A man who had been work- ing for Mr. Davies, and who was'discharged on the 18th inst., is suspected. He is 25 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, stoutly built, round face, light complexion, and a light mous- tache ; visually wears green plaid trousers, black coat and hat, and is of very respectable appearance. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Bradshaw, Wrexham, Denbigh- shire.— Bow- street, December 26. During the night of the 21st instant, a lock- up shop at Broomhill, near Barnsley, in the West Riding of Yorkshire, was forcibly entered, and the following articles stolen therein : a silver lever Watch, with white dial, seconds hand, engine- turned case, and capped, makers Storey and Sidman, Dews- bury, No. 25923, had attached a gold albert Guard, with long thick links, stamped ' 10 carata heavy dark grey Irish frieze Overcoat, with three pockets outside and one inside left breast, dark bone buttons, black and slate lining, and black velvet collar; 25 yards of woollen Shirting, scarlet and black, Rob Roy pattern, with rather large square oheck; 26 yards of grey woollen Shirting, check and striped ; about two dozen woollen Shawls, various colours; three pairs of new elastic- side Boots, 6, 7, and 8 sizes, with buttons up the front; 5 lbs. of twist Tobacco, thick and thin, and the finest brown; and about 2s. 6d. in copper Money. Information to be given to Superintendent Sykes, West Riding Constabulary, Barnsley.— Bow- street, December 26. Wanted, charged with committing the burglary at St. John's, Sevenoaks, on the 18th and advertised in the Police Gazette of the 24th ultimo : HENRY REECE, alias HAWKES, 30 years of age, 5 feet ~ i\ inches high, sandy hair, no whiskers, sandy stubby moustache, blue ejea, fair complexion, and a bricklayer by trade. Was discharged from Cold Bath Fields Prison, on the 4th November last, after a sentence of six months ; was liberated from Dartmoor Gaol, on a ticket- of- leave, on the 11th December, 1872, where he was undergoing seven years penal servitude; his license will expire on the 2nd June, 1874; dressed when last seen in dark overcoat, cloth trousers, and felt hat, all rather old. JAMES HURLEY, about 28 years of age, about 5 feet inches high, slight made, no whiskers, and small dark moustache; dressed in dark overcoat, dark trousers, hard felt hat, and Wellington boots, all nearly new. Well known at Bethnal- green and Whitechapel, London. JOHN CHATFIELD, about 28 years of age, 5 feet 7 ins. high, one tooth out in front of upper jaw, no whiskers, rather full face; dressed in dark cord trousers, raised seams up sides, dark cloth long overcoat, soft felt hat, white wrapper round neck, with dogs' heads on it. Also well known in the neighbourhood of Whitechapel. Information to be given to Superintendent O'Kill, Police Court, Sevenoaks, Kent.— Bow- street, December 24. Description of a boy named E. BROOK, a native of Leyton, Essex, charged with breaking and entering the dwelling- house of Mr. J. Marsh, of Thame, Oxon, between 10 p. m. on the 17th and 6 a. m. on the 18th instant, and stealing therein : an eight- day Clock, round face, maker Miles on the face ; a snuff- coloured cloth Overcoat; and a black pilot Overcoat, with large bone buttons, boy's size : he is about 16 years of age, 5 feet high, dark complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, slender make ; dressed in a Scotch cap, brown overcoat, grey speckled cloth trousers. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Fernsby, County Police Station, Oxford, or to Inspector Hawtin, Police Station, Thame, Oxon, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, December 24. Stolen by means of housebreaking from a cottage in the parish of Pennal, Merionethshire, between the morning of the 17th and the night of the 18th instant, the following property : a witney dark cloth monkey Jacket, pockets with flaps on the outside of the skirts, and a breast pocket in the left side ; a black cloth Vest, trimmed with cloth buttons ; a grey cloth Vest; a pair of dark cloth striped Trousers ; two pairs of cotton cord Trousers, one nearly new and newly washed ; a grey calico Shirt; a red fancy cotton Shirt; a pair of grey woollen Stockings ; a pair of light Half- Boots, the tongue of one missing; a black and white woollen Muffler ; a plaid Muffler ; and a black felt Hat. Supposed by a man of the following description : 21 years of age, about 5 feet 7 ins. high, fresh complexion, brown or dark brown hair, wide mouth, rather soft voice in speaking; he is a Welshman, and speaks broken English; has the appearance of a farm servant, and likely to seek employment with farmers ; he is supposed to be a native of Llanfaircaereinion, Montgomery- shire. Information to be given to Superintendent Hughes, Towyn, or to Police Sergeant Roberts, Aberdovey, Merioneth- shire.— Bow- street, December 24. Stolen on the night of the 19th instant, from Stockheath, Havant: a bay mare Pony, 6 years old, 14 hands high, dark stiipe down face, large bony knees, and turns forefeet in- wards, long tail cut square, and in good condition ; a set of Gig Harness with Chain Tugs; also a light spring Cart, made of oak, pointed green, the paint nearly worn off, both shafts having been broken and mended with plates of iron. A man between 30 and 40 years of age, dressed in dark clothes and high hat, was seen driving it. Information to be given to Superintendent Littlefield, Hants Constabulary, Fareham.— Bow- street, December 26. Between the hours of 11 and 2, on the 15th instant, the cottage of Benjamin Fellows, at Garston, near Watford, was broken into, and the following property stolen : a black cloth Coat, with the name of ' Chalk,' written on a small band inside collar; 2 pairs of mixed grey Trousers, not lined ; a dark Vest, a pair of lace- up Shoes, a calico Sheet, and a Half Sovereign. Supposed by tramps. Information to be given to Inspector Chapman, Police Station, Watford, Herts. — Bow- street, December 22. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Absconded from Barnstaple, on the 26th instant, charged with embezzlement: JOHNSON WEBB, 16 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark brown hair, florid complexion, Roman nose, and of genteel appearance; dressed in brown mixture coat and vest, black trousers, and at times wears a black overcoat; has lately been a clerk in a printer's office. Supposed gone to some seaport, with tne intention of going to sea. A warrant is issued for his apprehension. Informa- tion to be given to Head Constable Longhurst, Barnstaple, Devon.— Bow- street, December 31. Desciiption of AMOS WALKER, formerly of Swaffham, a commercial traveller, who absconded on the 28th ultimo, charged on a warrant with embezzling a large amount of money : he is abont 30 years of age, 5 feat 4 or 5 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair and whiskers, growing down the face and under chin; he was seen a few days since in the neighbourhood of Islington, and is connected with the beer, wine, and spirit trade. All expences will be paid on his apprehension. Information to be given to Superintendent Lambley, Swaffham, Norfolk.— Bow- street, December 31. Description of EDWIN ROBERTS, a tramping shoe- maker or rivetter, who absconded from Oakengates, Salop, on the 18th instant, charged on a warrant with being the bailee of a silver v. i- ge Watch on the 18th instant, the pioperty of Henry Didlock; also of a silver Geneva Hunting Watch, maker La Trobe, 15, College Green, Bristol, No, 52696 ; and an English verge Watch, No, 5889, the property of Mr. Joseph Rushton, watchmaker, Oakengates : he is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark hair and complexion, little beard at end of chin ; dressed in black cloth coat and trousers, brown vest, and soft black billycock hat ; is accom- panied by his wife and a little boy ; the wife is about 35 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, pale complexion, has a cast in both eyes, and auburn hair ; the little boy is about 4 years of age, fair complexion, and curly hair. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Richardson, Wellington, or to Sergeant Merricks, Oakengates, Salop, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, Dec. 31. Description of THOMAS PLATTS, a brewers traveller, who absconded from Sheffield on the 23rd instant, charged with embezzling several sums of money : about 32 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, pale complexion, dark eyes, dark hair, small black moustache, has a cast in his eyes, slight impediment in his speech, and shakes his head when speaking; dressed when he absconded in dark blue overcoat, with velvet collar, and low- crowned brown felt hat; he is a native of Dronfield, in the county of Derby, but has lately resided in Napier- street, Sheffield. Information to be given to Chief Constable Jackson, Sheffield, York, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, December 29. Stolen during the night of the 19th instant, from the dwelling- house of George Hegley, of Spinkhill: one blue pilot Jacket with velvet collar and pockets outside ; one black cloth Vest; one pair of dark tweed Trousers; one pair of light lace- up Boots without nails ; and two Scarfs : the pro- perty of Michael Martin. Also at the same time: one black cloth Jacket with velvet collar; one pair of light tweed Trousers; and one pair of elastic aide Boots; the property of Patrick Higgins. By a man of the following description, charged under a warrant: JAMES WOODCOCK, stone- mason, but has lately worked as a labourer, 22 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, light hair, no whiskers, red face, ia a native of Clowne, Derbyshire ; has been in the army about two years. He will most likely be wearing part © f the stolen clothes, as he left part of his own behind. Information to be given to Superintendent Cruit, Eckington, Derbyshire.— Bow- street, December 29. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen from Rhug Park, between the 12th and the 20th instant: forty Welsh Ewes, the property of Thomas Evans, point of left ear cut, and point of right ear split, pitch mark ' T. E.' on left side, and supposed the letter ' W.' on right, tails half cut, and raddled on shoulders ; also five Ewes, of larger size, supposed to be South Downs, three of them pitch marked ' T. W.', one of them was black. Infor- mation to be given to Sergeant Williams, Corwen, Merioneth. — Bow- street, December 29. Further information respecting the black Mare stolen from Boxhill Farm, Dorking, on the night of the 9th instant, and advertised in the Police Gazette of the 12th instant: she has a seton mark on near hip, and a lump on inside of oil' fore leg. The bay Pony stolen at the same time and place has not yet been found. Information to be given to Super- intendent Lambert, Surrey Constabulary, Dorking.— Bow- street, December 30. Description of JOSEPH BRADLEY, nailmaker, of Old Hill, Rowley Regis, Staffordshire, who is charged with stealing 1 cwt. of rod Iron, the property of the New British Iron Company, on the night of the 18th instant: about 42 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, proportionately built, very dark hair and whiskers, rough beard, sallow com- plexion ; dressed in an old brown velveteen jacket, old blue trousers, old billycock hat, and very bad shoes. Information to be given to Inspector Price, Police Station, Old Hill, Dudley, Staffordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehen- sion.— Bow- street, December 26. Description of GOODWIN GOOD YOUNG, who ia charged with embezzling £ 28 19s. 6d., the property of the Cockermouth Permanent Benefit Building Society, for which a warrant has been granted for his apprehension; he was for- merly a clerk in a solicitor's office in Cockermouth : he is about 26 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark brown hair, pale- looking, left leg contracted at the knee, and uses a crutch under his left arm when walking, has short dark whiskers ( round his face) and moustache, and " generally 2 POLICE GAZETTE December 31. well dressed. Young's wife left Cockermouth on the 18th instant for Liverbool; she is about 24 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, and of respectable appearance ; before leaving she sold her furniture and received a cheque for £ 7 odd in part payment, which was cashed on the 19th instant at Yates's Bank, No. 17, Castle- street, Liverpool. Supposed staying in Liverpool with the intention of emigrating to America. Information to be given to Superintendent Spencer. Cockermouth, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle, Cumberland.— Bow- street, December 26. Stolen from a shop in Nantwich- road, Crewe, about 11 a. m. on the 22nd instant : a new grey woollen Shirt, with a white stripe. By a youth, about 15 years of age, about 5 feet high, and sallow complexion ; dressed in an old dark cloth coat, and black cloth cap. Information to be given to Superintendent Laxton, Nantwich, or to Inspector Morris, Crewe, Cheshire.— Bow- street, December 24. GEORGE ROBINS, late of 31, Oak Village, Gospel Oak, Kentish Town, is charged with felony : he is 28 years of age, 5 feet ' 7 or 8 inches high, brown hair, cut short, slight mous- tache, pointed beard, no whiskers, blue eyes, fresh complexion, thin build, walks quickly with rather a stoop, small head, which he has a habit of turning quickly, and speaks hoarsely; dressed in heavy rough dark blue overcoat, dark trousers, and cutaway coat, and tall hat. Information to be given to Inspector Bailey, City of London Police, Detective Depart- ment, 26, Old Jewry, E. C.— Bow- street, December 24. WALTER J. D. RICHARDS, of Albion- buildings, Tenby- street, and 7, South- grove, Erdington, lately in the employ of Billing Brothers and Whitmore, paper dealers, St. Paul's- square, Birmingham, as town traveller, having ab- sconded from Birmingham on the 19th instant, £ 20 reward will be paid to any one who shall give such information as shall lead to his apprehension. He is 26 years of age ( looks older), 5 feet 9 inches high, dark hair, slightly streaked with grey, round face, high shoulders, and awkward gait. A war- rant for his apprehension is in the hands ® f Mr. Glossop, Chief Superintendent of Police, Moor- street, Birmingham.— Bow,- street, December 24. Description of WILLIAM GEORGE WATSON, a brewer's clerk, charged at Manchester with embezzlement: 25 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, slender make, small black whiskers and moustache, black hair, dark com- plexion, high cheekbones, narrow at the chin, stoops a little when walking, slightly in- kneed, and of gentlemanly appearance ; usually dressed in dark cloth clothes and high- crowned billycock hat; is a good singer, and has been in the habit of attending music halls and theatres. £ 10 reward will be paid by his late employers for his apprehension, and a further reward of 10. per cent, on all monies recovered. In- formation to be given at the Detective Office, Town Hall, Manchester.— Bow- street, December 24. Stolen from a dwelling- house on the 22nd instant, in the parish of Grimoldby : about 161bs of Bacon, the property of Mark Hewson. By a man of the following description : 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh complexion, dark hair and whiskers, meeting under the chin ; dressed in a Scotch cap with ribbon behind, short drab slop, and cord trousers, having the appearance of a farm labourer. Information to be sriven to Superintendent Thorsby. County Police Office, Louth, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, December 24. Stolen on the 20th instant, from the commercial- room of the Cross Keys Inn, Northampton : two meerschaum Pipes { one new, the other coloured), the largest is a billiard pipe, with amber mouthpiece, and under the amber near the stem is a dark mark about the size of a pin's head ; the smallest is in a violet and black leather case, and has the name ' Hart- man, Vienna,' inside the case ; and a white silk Handkerchief, marked ' W. S.' in corner. By a man of the following descrip- tion ( who lodged in the above house one night and left with- out paying his bill): 33 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, very large nose, and ginger- coloured whiskers and moustache ; dre- sed in dark clothes, grey overcoat, and high silk hat. £ 2 reward will be paid ou his apprehension and recovery of the property. Information to bo given to Chief Constable Keenan, Northampton.— Bow- street, December 24. Stolen on the 18th instant, the property of Patrick Clinton, of Consett: a patent lever silver Watch, with white dial, gold hands, and engine- turned case, No. 1236, had a silver Guard attached. By a man who gave his name GEO. ANDERSON, about 20 years of age, about 5 feet 3 inches high, dark complexion, dark brown hair, small thin whiskers, long features, bridge of nose rather flat, slender figure, by trade a blacksmith, and has worked at ship yards and iron works in the North of England ; dressed in black cloth coat, with velvet collar, moleskin trousers and vest), blue flannel shirt, eheck scarf, black cloth cap, and old boots. Information to be given to Superintendent Oliver, Durham County Constabulary, Consett, who holds a warrant for his appre- hension.— Bow- street, December 24. Stolen from No. 14, Edgware- street, Edge- hill, Liverpool, a Harp, maker ' Erards,' black belly, with ornaments at the bottom, aud figures of females. By a man of the following description : 5 feet 4 inches high, face very red with pimples, and wore a round black cloth and round hat. A reward of 10s. will be given for his apprehension. Information to be given to Superintendent Harrap, Edgeside, Lancashire.— Bow- street, December 24. Stolen from the Turk's Head public- house, Eton, on the morning of the 18th instant : two Blankets, worn, which have been recovered. By a man who slept at the house for the night: a Scotchman, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, light hair, very little whiskers, tooth out in front, and fair complexion ; dressed in dark clothes, grey check cap with peak, and had a white comforter round his neck. Information to be given to Superintendent Dunham, Slough, or to Inspector Pearman, Eton, Bucks.— Bow- street, December 22. Description of WILLIAM ATKINSON, a tramping joiner, who is charged with stealing some Tools, which are recovered at Barton, Lincolnshire : he is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, brown hair, very much whiskers and moustache, fresh complexion ; dressed in an old faded black cloth coat, dark vest, checked trousers, mended at the knees, old Wellington boots, and billycock hat; has an Irish woman with him who passes as his wife ; he seeks work at his trade, also as a saw sharpener, begs, and is very fond of drink, sleeps at low lodging houses ; was traced to Hull on the 18th instant, and is supposed to be making for the north. Information to be given to Superintendent Fuller, Bartoji- upon- Humber, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, December 22. Absconded from Cheltenhem on the 11th instant, charged with stealing five sets of leather boot Bottoms, four pairs of ladies boot Tops, aud one pair of boot Lasts, the property ot Mr. Thomas Ryder, their employer : WILLIAM JAMES, a shoemaker, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, black curly hair, pale complexion, dark moustache, good- shaped nose, no eyelashes, rather red eyes as though they had once been sore, and of thin make. EDGINGTON, shoemaker, about 40 yeatt. jjf age, and 5 feet 7 inches high, rather li. ht hair, large round face, clean shaved, pugilistic dissipated appearance, stoutly made, wears light clothes, and has his son with him, a boy about 7 years of age. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Day, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, who holds warrants for their apprehension.— Bow- street, December 22. FRAUDS AND AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS. Description of a man who obtained by false pretences from Mr. George Stone, jeweller, Weston- super- mare, Somer- set, on the 24th instant : one gold 18- carat engraved keeper Ring, hall marked; and one 15- carat blue enamelled gold Locket, with Masonic ( compass) emblem, of the value of £ 3 15s. ; he stated that his name was CHARLES, and that he required them to make a present to his uncle, Mr. Perry : abcut 20 or 23 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, round fea- tures, very fair complexion with light whiskers, blue or grey eyes, light hair cut shoit, and of respectable appearance; dressed in a black bowler hat, with mourning band, and blue cloth jacket. Information to be given to Superintendent Gillbank, Somerset Constabulaiy, Axbridge, or to Sergeant Hardwick, Weston- super- mare, Somersetshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, December 29. Escaped from Lincoln Citv Gaol, on the morning of the 18th instant: GEORGE SMITH, who was convicted at Lincoln City Sessions, 17th July last, and sentenced to 12 months imprisonment: he is a native of Cottingham, near Hull, 37 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, rather sallow com- plexion, dark brown hair, hazel eyes, has a cast in the left, pockpitted, lisps slightly when talking, has dark heavy eye- brows, and walks very erect; he espaped without cap " or shoes, aud was in prison dress, marked ' Lincoln City Gaol.' He is well known in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, having travelled with his wife ( who is of low build and fresh look- ing) hawking scents, needle- work, and wax flowers, which she makes, and he occasionally associates with gipsies. In January last he obtained a certificate at Beverley, and it was afterwards endorsed for the East and West Ridings.
