Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it ia indispensably necessary that « n Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thoreof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the JPOIiICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor most be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER 4ND MALICIOUSLY Bounding. On the 21st instant, the dead body of a newly- born male Infant was found in a pond at Stroud Green, Greenham, Lear Newbury. The body was - wrapped in brown paper and a piece of black alpaca bound tightly round with strong twine, and presented unmistakeable appearances of having been strangled ; according to the medical evidence it appeared to have been in the water about a week. At an inquest held on the 22nd instant the jury returned a verdict of ' Wilful Murder' against some person or persons unknown. Informa- tion to be given to Inspector Bennett, Berks Constabulary, Newbury.— Bow- street, December 26. BOBBERT AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of Mr. J. Bradley, of Drayton, on the evening of the 27th instant, at Wellington ( Salop) • Railway Station: a patent lever silver Watch, with * J. Bradley' engraved on the inside of outer case. Infor- mation to be given to Chief Superintendent Richardson, Wellington, Salop.— Bow- street, December 29. Stolen from the person of William Young, in a beerhouse at East Grinstead, on the 12th instant : a double- cased silver verge Watch, maker's name ' Stephen Crundwell, Tunbridge, No. 8571.' Information to be given to Superintendent Kennard, East Grinstead, Sussex.— Bow- street, Decembet 22. Stolen from the person in the city of Durham, on the night of the 20th July last, a silver patent lever Watch, silver lace, gold figures, nearly new, maker Waterfield, Willington, with gold albert Guard ( long links) and locket ( engraved ' Forget me not'). Information to be given to Chief Con- stable Wilson, Durham City.— Bow- street, December 22. Wanted, charged with committing the burglary at St. John's, Sevenoaks, on the 18th and advertised in the Police Gazette of the 24th ultimo : HENRY REECE, alias HAWKES, 30 years of age, 5 feet inches high, sandy hair, no whiskers, sandy stubby moustache, blue ejes, fair complexion, and a bricklayer by trade. Was discharged from Cold Bath Fields Prison, on the 4th November last, after a sentence of six months ; was liberated from Dartmoor Gaol, on a ticket of- leave, on the 11th December, 1872, where he was undergoing seven years penal servitude; his license will expire ou the 2nd June, 1874; dressed when last seen in dark overcoat, cloth trousers, and felt hat, all rather old. JAMES HURLEY, about 28 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, slight made, no whiskers, and small dark moustache; dressed in dark overcoat, dark trousers, hard felt hat, and Wellington boots, all nearly new. Well known at Bethnal- green and Whitechapel, London. JOHN CHATFIELD, about 28 years of age, 5 feet 7 ins. high, one tooth out in front of upper jaw, no whiskers, rather full face; dressed in dark cord trousers, raised seams up sides, dark cloth long overcoat, soft felt hat, white wrapper round neck, with dogs' heads on it. Also well known in the neighbourhood of Whitechapel. Information to be given to Superintendent O'Kill, Police Court, Sevenoaks, Kent.— Bow- street, December 24. Description of a boy named E. BROOK, a native of Leyton, Essex, charged with breaking and entering the dwelling- house of Mr. J. Marsh, of Thame, Oxon, between 10 p. m. on the 17th and 6 a. m. on the 18th instant, and stealing therein : an eight- day Clock, round face, maker Miles on the face ; a snuff- coloured cloth Overcoat; and a black pilot Overcoat, with large bone buttons, boy's size : he is about 16 years of age, 5 feet high, dark complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, slender make ; dressed in a Scotch cap, brown overcoat, grey speckled cloth trousers. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Fernsby, County Police Station, Oxford, or to Inspector Hawtin, Police Station, Thame, Oxon, - who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, December 24. Stolen by means of housebreaking from a cottage in the parish of Pennal, Merionethshire, between the morning of the 17th and the night of the 18th instant, the following property : a witney dark cloth monkey Jacket, pockets with flaps on the outside of the skirts, and a breast pocket in the left side ; a black cloth Vest, trimmed with cloth buttons ; a grey cloth Vest; a pair of dark cloth striped Trousers ; two pairs of cotton cord Trousers, one nearly new aad newly washed ; a grey calieo Shirt; a red fancy cotton Shirt; a pair of grey woollen Stockings ; a pair of light Half- Boots, the tongue of one missiDg; a black and white woollen Muffler ; a plaid Muffler ; and a black felt Hat. Supposed by a man of the following description : 21 years of age, about 5 feet 7 ins. high, fresh complexion, brown or dark brown hair, wide Description of HEZEKIAH EVANS, charged with stealing the mare Donkey ( advertised in- the Police Gazette of the 15th instant) from Holmer- green, in the parish of Little Missenden, on the night of the 5ih kist. ( the donkey has been recovered): he i » about 17 year » of age, 5 feet high, and stout make; dressed in. a short fustiaa jacket or white slop, cord trousers, dirty in front, dark waistcoat and cap ; he is a tinker, but sometimes works for blacksmiths ; h « holds a pedlar's certificate for Bucks, issued in October las*, and has it endorsed for the Metropolitan Distrist; he is usually hawking tinware. Information to be given to Inspector Moore, Chesham, or to Sergeant Maneely, Amersham, Bucks, who holds a warrant for hi » apprehension— Bow- street, De- cember 19. Stolen on the night of the 17th instant, from a field at Manton : an aged black nag Horse, about hands high, in very good condition, very small white staj on forehead, and both knees chipped. Information to be gtven to the Chief Constable of Rutland, Oakham.— Bow- streit, December 19. Description of JAMES WATSON and JAMES LOWTHER, alias ' SMALL. JEMMY,' charged with steal- ing a chesnut mare Pony from Harrington, on the 19th nit. the property of John Martin, which has siace bee a recavered. WATSON is 30 years of age, a native of Carlisle, basket maker, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, light complexion, thin, sandy whiskers, light brown hair, stoutly build ; dressed in brown coat, moleskin trousers, and eloth cap. LOWTHER is about 20yrs. of age, basket maker or potter, a native of Carlisle, 5 feet 5 or 6 ins. high, light complexion, large roman ncse, brown hair, and slender figure; dressed in old black cloth coat and trousers. These men are well known in Cumberland, and Lanoaakiuo. Information to be given to Superintendent little, Whitehaven, who holds the warrants for their apprehension, or at the County Chief Constables Office, Carlisle, Cumberland.— Bovi- street, December 19. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Description of THOMAS PLATTS, a brewers traveller, who absconded from Sheffield on the 23rd instant, charged with embezzling several sums of money : about 32 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, pale complexion, dark eyes, dark hair, small black moustache, has a cast in his eyes, slight impediment in his speech, and shakes his head when speaking ; dressed when he absconded in dark blue overcoat, with velvet collar, and low- crowned brown felt hat ; he is a native of Dronfield, in the county of Derby, but has lately resided in Napier- street, Sheffield. Information to be given to Superintendent Hughes, i Trousers. alld one pair of eiastic side Boots; the property Towyn, or to Police Sergeant Roberts, Aberdovey, Merioneth- of Patrick Higgins. By a man of the following description, charged under a warrant: JAMES WOODCOCK, stone- mason, but has lately worked as a labourer, 22 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, light hair, no whiskers, red face, is shire.— Bw- street, December 24. Between the hours of 11 and 2, on the 15th instant, the cottage of Benjamin Fellows, at Garston, near Watford, was broken into, and the following property stolen : a black cloth j a native of Clowne, Derbyshire ; has been in the army about Coat, with the name of ' Chalk,' written on a small band two years. He will most likely be wearing part of the stolen inside collar; 2 pairs of mixed grey Trousers, not lined ; a clothes, as he left part of his own behind. Information to be BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Between 6 and 7 p. m. on the 21st inst, the house of Edward Davies, of the Adwyr, near Wrexham, tailor and clothier, • was broken into by means of breaking the lock off the back • door, and a Cash Box containing .£ 100 10s. in gold, ene £ 5 Note of the N. and S. Wales Bank, and £ 3 in Silver, was stolen from the bed- room. A man who had been work- ing for Mr. Davies, and who was^ discharged on the 18th inst., is suspected. He is 25 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, stoutly built, round face, light complexion, and a light mous- tache ; usually wears green plaid trousers, black coat and hat, and is of very respectable appearance. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Bradshaw, Wrexham, Denbigh- shire.— Bow- street, December 26. During the night of the 21st instant, a lock- up shop at Broomhill, near Barnsley, in the West Riding of Yorkshire, was forcibly entered, and the following articles stolen therein : a silver lever Watch, with white dial, seconds hand, engine- turned case, and capped, makers Storey and Sidman, Dews- bury, No. 25923, had attached a gold albert Guard, with long thick links, stamped ' 10 carat;' a heavy dark grey Irish frieze Overcoat, with three pockets outside and one inside left breast, dark bone buttons, black and slate lining, and black velvet collar; 25 yards of woollen Shirting, scarlet and black, Rob Roy pattern, with rather large square check; 26 yards of grey woollen Shirting, check and striped ; about two dozen woollen Shawls, various colours ; three pairs of new elastic- side Boots, 6, 7, and 8 sizes, with buttons up the front;' 5 lbs. of twist Tobacco, thick and thin, and the finest brown ; and about 2s. 6d. in copper Money. Information to be given to Superintendent Sykes, West Riding Constabulary, Barnsley.— Bow- street, December 26. dark Vest, a pair of lace- up ykoes, a calico Sheet, and a Half Sovereign. Supposed by tramps. Information to be given to Inspector Chapman, Police Station, Watford, Harts. — Bow- street, December 22. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen from Rhug Park, between the 12th and the 20th instant: forty Welsh Ewes, the property of Thomas Evans, point of left ear cut, and point of right ear split, pitch mark ' T. E.' on left side, and supposed the letter ' W.' on right, tails half cut, and raddled on shoulders ; also five Ewes, of larger size, supposed to be South Downs, three of them pitch marked 1T. W.', one of them was black. Infor- mation to be given to Sergeant Williams, Corwen, Merioneth. Bow- street, December 29. Further information respecting the black Mare stolen from Boxhill Farm, Dorking, on the night of the 9th instant, and advertised in the Police Gazette of the 12th instant: she has a seton mark on near hip, and a lump on inside of off. hair, pale- iooking. fore leg. The bay Pony stolen at the same time and place has not yet been found. Information to be given to Super- intendent Lambert, Surrey Constabulary, Dorking.— Bow- ttreet, December 29. Stolen on the night of the 19th instant, from Stockheath, Havant: a bay mare Pony, 6 years old, 14 hauds high, dark stiipe down face, large bony knees, and turns forefeet in- wards, long tail cut square, and in good condition ; a set of Gig Harness with Chain Tugs; also a light spring Cart, made of oak, painted green, the paint nearly worn oif, both shafts having, been broken and mended with plates of iron. A man between 30 and 40 years of age, dressed in dark clothes and high hat, was seen driving it. Description of JOSEPH BRADLEY, nailmaker, of Old Hill, Rowley Regis, Staffordshire, who is charged with stealing 1 cwt. of rod Iron, the property of the New British Iron Company, on the night of the 18th instant : about 42 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, proportionately built, yery dark hair and whiskers, rough beard, sallow com- plexion ; dressed in an old brown velveteen jacket, old blue trousers, old billycock hat, and very bad shoes. Information to be given to Inspector Price, Police Station, Old Hill, Dudley, Staffordshire, who holds a warrant for his appreken- sion.— Bow- street, December 26. Description of GOODWIN GOOD YOUNG, who ia charged with embezzling £ 28 19s. 6d., the property of the Cockermouth Permanent Benefit Building Society, for which a warrant has been granted for his apprehension; he was for- merly a clerk in a solicitor's office in Cockermouth : he is about 26 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark brown left leg contracted at the knee, and uses a crutch under his left arm when walking, has short dark whiskers ( round his fate) and moustache, and. generally well dressed. Young's wife left Cockermouth on the 18th instant for Liverbool; she is about 24 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, and of respectable appearance; before leaving she sold her furniture and received a cheque for £ 7 odd in part payment, which was cashed on the 19th instant at Yates's Bank, No. 17, Castle- street, Liverpool. Supposed staying in Liverpool with the intention of emigrating to America. Information to be given to Superintendent Spencer, [ Cockermouth, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle, Cumberland.— Bow- street, December 26. Stolen from a shop in Nantwich- road, Crewe, about 11 a. m. on the 22nd instant: a new grey woollen Shirt, with a white stripe. By a youth, about 15 years of age, about 2 FOLIC E GAZETI'M. GEORGE ROBINS, late of 31, Oak Village, Gospel Oak, Kentish Town, is charged with felony : he is 28 years of age";' 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, brown hair, cut short, slight mous- tache, pointed beard, no whiskers, blue eyes, fresh complexion, thin build, walks quickly with rather a etd'op,-' staall head, • which he has a habit of turning quickly, and speaks hoarsely ; dressed in heavy rough - dark blue overcoat, dark trousers, and cutaway ooat, and tall hat. Stolen on the 20th'instant,' from the commercial- room of the Cross Keys Inn, Northampton : two meerschaum Pipes ( one new, the other coloured), the largest is a billiard pipe, • with amber mouthpiece, and under the amber near the stem is a dark mark about the sfer of a pin's head ; the smallest is iii a violet and black . leather case, and has the name ' Hartman, Vienna,' inside the case ; and a white silk Handkerchief, marked ' W. S.' in corner. By a man of the following descrip- tion ( who lodged in the above house one night and left with- out paying his bill) : 33 j van- of age, 6 feet 7 inches high, Very large nose, and^ ghiger-' cokiured whiskers and moustache ; dresSed'In dark' clothes, grey overcoat, and high silk hat. £ 2 reward will ' be paid on his apprehension and recovery of the property. Stolen on the 18th instant, the property of Patrick Clinton, of Consett: a patent lever silver Watch, with white dial, gold , hands, and engine- turned • case, No. 1236, had a, silver Gdard attached. By a man who gave his name GEO. ANDERSON, about- 20v. years of age, about 5 feet 3 inches high, dark complexion, dark brown hair, small thin whiskers, long features, bridge of. nose rather flat, slender figure, by trade a blacksmith, and has worked at ship yards and iron works in the North of. England .; dressed in black cloth coat, with velvet collar, mole^ feia trousers and vest, blue flannel shirt, check scarf, black cloth cap, and old boots. No. 14, Edgware- street, Edge- hill, Liverpool, JOSEPH RANBY, ahcsit 25 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, proportionate build, fresh complexion, prominent Roman nose, browii hair,^ siyatl whiskers, no moustache; dressed in blue overeoat, with velvet collar ; has been a com- mercial traveller in the drapery and fancy millinery trade ; he has a relative living in Dawson- lane, Holdness- street, Hull. Information to be given to Chief Constable Poyntz,' Boro' Police Station, Nottingham.— Bow street, December 19. Absconded from Holt, on the 8th instant, charged with stealing from his m, aster : one brown double- breasted Over- coat with sealskin collar, two" pockets behind, and one breast ditto, lined with a kind of black twill; a horse- clipping Machine, Clark's make; and* a"( singing Ditto: HENRY THAXTEN, groom, 27 years of age, 5_ feet 7 or 8 inches high, swarthy complexion, small dark Whiskers, little { liair oti chin ; dressed in _ seedy- black, coat, drabbed ti; ousers, and white chummy hat;' v& IKS rather quick, and " may be' found amongst drovers. Information to be given to Inspector Mobbs, ilolt, Norfolk, who holds a warrant for las . appre- hension— Bow- street, Deccitiker 19. Absconded about the IVlth ' ultimo,- hiivirig etribeazled several sums of Money : HUGH RODGER, late of Wolver- hampton, draper's assistant, about 20 jpafs fit ago,. 6 feet 6 inches" high,. black curly hair, dark' moustache, sallow com- plexion, small features, and large eyes; was dressed iu a blue ribbed coat, blue Petersham overcoat, lined with black and white plaid, dark, striped trousers, and silk hat. Had with him a dark plaid or check jacket, with trousers, nearly to match, and deerstalker hat. £ 10 reward will be paid to any person or persors giving information leading to his appre- hension and conviction. Information to be given to Chief Constable Segrave, Wolverhampton, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, December 19. Oh the night of the 29th ulltmo, several large boxes at the Barron- wood cutting, on the Settle and Carlisle Railway, were broken open, and about 70 lbs. of Gunpowder stolen therefrom,- the property of Mr. Bayliss, contractor. Also, on the same night, a wooden Building, vised as a blacksmith's shop, was blown up with gunpowder and other damage com- mitted. A warrant has been issued- for the apprahension of WILLIAM BUTLER, an Irishman, who was discharged from the works on the 29th ultimo : about 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, ruddy- complexion,- and rather dark sandy whiskers round the face; dressed in a faded dark jacket, velveteen or plush fancy waistcoat, diamond pattern of all colours, moleskin or grey cloth trousers patched on the lineeSj black billycock hat, and clogs ; he is of idle habits, frequents common lodging- houses, and occasionally sleeps at workhouse vagrant - wards. Information iso he given to Super- intendent Fowler, Penrith, who holds the warrant for his apprehension, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle, Cumberland!— Bow- street, December 19. FBAUBS AETD AGGRAVATED Description of a man who obtained by false pretences from Mr. George Stone, jeweller, Weston: super- mare, Somer- set, on the 24th instant: one gold 18- carat engraved keeper Ring, hall marked ; and one 15- carat blue enamelled gold Locket, with Masonic ( compass) emblem, of the value of £ 3 15S. ; he stated that his name was CHARLES, and that he recpiired them to make a present to his uncle, Mr. Perry : abcut 20; or 23 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, round fea- tures, very fair complexion with light whiskers, blue or grey eyes, light hair cut short, and of respectable appearance; dressed in a black bowler hat, with mourning band, and blue cloth jacket.
