Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in refereace to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MB. G. %• Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article the POLIOS GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Found in the river Hyndburn, at Accringtou, about 7 p. m. on the 16th instant : the dead body of a newly- bprn full- grown male Child, wrapped in a piece of old calico, and enclosed in a small fig box, commonly- used by grocers, no marks of any distinction upou it; the body appears to have, been in the water five or six weeks. An inquest was held on | the body, and a verdict of ' Wilful Murder' returned against some person or persons unknown. Information to be given at the Police Office, Burnley, Lancashire.— Bow- street, July 21.. At 3" 30 p. m. on the 11th instant, the dead body of a female child was found in a ditch on Clifton Marsh, near Runcorn, wrapped in an old coarse white apron. A post-! mortem examination was made on the following day, when it appeared that the scull was fractured, and that the navel string had not been tied, and an open verdict was returned. A man and woman were noticed near the place for a length of time a few days before the body was discovered, and are j supposed to have left it there : the man about 34 years of age, j 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, had the appearance of a navvy ; the woman about the same age, rather tall, very pale, and sickly looking. Information to be given to Superintendent Aston, Police Station, Euncorn Cheshire.— Bow- st., July 16. By three men of the following description : one a tall man, about 40 years of age, dressed in collier's working clothes, with lamp in front of his hat, and dinner tin hanging by his side, face black as if he had just left work ; he pulled a spring back Knife out of his pocket to cut the straps of the box ; another a tall man, 30 to 35 years of age, thin face, slight built, smart appearance; dressed in grey jacket, and old bowler hat; and the other about 18 years of age, short, and slight boyish looking thin face ; dressed in collier's working clothes with lamp in front of hat, and dinner tin hanging by his side. They spoke Welsh. Information to be given to Superintendent Mcintosh, Police Station, Pontypool, Mon- mouthshire.— Bow- street, July 23. Stolen from a lady at the Great Western Bailway Station, Windsor, on the 18th instant, a gold Geneva Watch, chased rim, engine- turned back, and hand across the back, also a small gold Locket, with fair hair inside, rather larger than a sixpence. Information to be given to Superintendent Hayes, Windsor, Berks.— Bow- stre< t, July 21. Stolen from the person of Edward Massey, Church Law- ton, about 9 p. m. on the 14th instant: a double- barrel Gun, breech loader, maker ' Mortimer, London' on locks and rim of barrels, numbers on under side of bairels 113 and 14,' or ' 12 and 13,' value .£ 10. By a man, about 28 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, no whiskers ; dressed in dark clothes, and left an old woollen cap, with peak, behind. Information to be given to Superintendent Rowbottom, Middlewich, or to Sergeant Dale, Hall Green, Lawton, Cheshire. - Bow- street, July 18. Charged with being concerned ( with others in custody), for highway robbery with violence : THOMAS JONES, alias HALL, 25 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fresh complexiou, light brown hair, blue eyes, scar at corner of right eye, mole on right cheek, little finger of left hand crooked, and of respectable appear;. nce; dressed in dark suit, silk scarf, with pin.— Metropolitan Police, P Division, July 18. 1 Jacket Body of same material. 1 brown and grey striped Petticoat, wilh one flounce 1 Dressing Gown, small brown and white pattern. 1 white petticoat Bodice, bound with lace at top. Information to be given to Inspector Chapman, Watford, Herts.— Bow- street, July 21. Between 12 and 5 p. m. on the 15th instant, the dwelling- house of Augustin Lay, of Long Handborough, in the county of Oxford, was entered by means of a skeleton key, and the following property stolen therein : a silver Geneva hunting Watch, maker Fiske, Oxford; an open- face silver Geneva Watch, with hands aud back case broken off; a silver Guard Chain ; a Foreign silver Coin, about the size of a half crown, with two heads on one side; and about 8s. in Silver and Copper. Information to be given to Inspector Bowen, Constabulary Station, Woodstock, Oxon. — Bow- street, July 21. On the 13th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. John Lea, farmer, at Warton, in the parish of Polesworth, in the county of Warwick, was broken and entered, and about £ 15 in Monies stolen therein. Whoever will give such informa- tion as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders, shall receive £ 15 reward on application to Mr. John Lea. Information to be given to Inspector Hursher, Atherstone, or to P. S. Poultney, Polesworth, War- wickshire.— Bow- street, July 18. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Description of JAMES BUTT, charged with assault and robbery at Claverton Down ou the 8th ultimo : about 19 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, sallow complexion, brown hair, ard grey eyes, when talking he closes the right one ; he belongs to the 2nd Somerset Militia aud also to the Militia Beserve ; he is a native of Frome, Somerset, and supposed to be working in South Wales. Information to be given to Superintendent Morgan, County Police Station, Bath, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, July 23. Stolen from the person of a gentleman at Handborough Bailway Station, on the 15th instant: a large old- fashioned open- face gold Watch, seconds hand, dull face, aud bright figures, makers Younge and Son, London, No. 8216. £ 10 reward will be paid ou the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Inspector Hawtin, Police Station, Thame, Oxon.— Bow- strcet, July 23. Stolen on the 17th instant, from the person of Benjamin Field, licenced pedlar, of No. 51, Commercial- road, Newport, when crossing Hanhilleth Mountain, from Abersychan to Abertillery: a jeweller's Box, containing the following articles : six silver case hunting Geneva Watches ; three flat glass silver Geneva Watches, one wi< h metal dome; two small open face silver Geneva Watches ; thirteen silver Geneva Watches ; a silver open- face English lever Watch ; a silver hunting- case second hand English lever Watch ; a gold Geneva Lever, 15 jewels, 18 carat; two small gola Geneva Watches, 18 carat; two gold Guards, secret link, 9 carat; three massive gold Alberts, bars and link, 9 carat ; fourteen gold wedding Kings, 22 carat; four gentleman's gold Rin^ s, two with red aud two with white Stones ; eighteen gold keeper Rings, 9 carat ; nine ladies' gold Rings, with various coloured stones, 9 carat ; twenty- three pairs of gold Ear- lings, different patterns; twelve pairs of plain gold Ear- rings; four gold Lockets, different sizes ; four silver Tooth Picks ; twenty pairs of plated Ear- rings ; two sets of tortoise- shell Ear- rings and Brooches, set in gold ; thirteen pairs of jet Ear- rings ; ten jet Brooches ; fifteen pairs of black Ear- rings and Drops ; a gold watch Key, with three stones, two white and one red; six split gold Bings ; a silver ear Piercer, with red bone handle; and £ 8 10s. in gold money, value £ 96. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. During the night of the 18th instant, a lock- up shop, in the occupation of Francis Hancock, of Hathasage, was entered and stolen therefrom : a quantity of Leather; one pair of men's light Boots ; a pair of Tops for watertight boots ; one pair of Boots for a boy ( partly made with last left in); and a quantity of Leather, of various kinds. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Williams, Constabulary Office, Bakewell, Derbyshire.— Bow- street, July 25. The cottage of James Thomas, of the parish of Grendon- Bishop, labourer, was broken and entered by forcing the lock, between 8 a. ni. and 7 p. m. cn the 23rd instant, and an old- fashioned silver Watch stolen therein, maker Johnson, Grays' Inn, No. 1424. A travelling sweep and his wife was seen in ! the neighbourhood of the cottage, the former rather tall, the latter short. Information to be given to Superintendent Harwood, Bromyard, Herefordshire.— Bow- street, July 25. Description of GEORGE WILSON, charged with breaking aud entering the dwelling- house of Richard Hen- derson, on the 23rd ultimo, in the borough of Sunderland, and stealing therein: £ 6 10s.; three Purses; and a grey tweed shooting Coat, has a loop on inside collar marked ' Hills, Sunderland.' He is about 23 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, slender built, walks erect, light brown hair, slight light moustache, and fair complexion; a painter by trade, and was heard to say that he belonged to Cambridge- shire. Information to be given to Chief Constable Stainsby, Suuderlaud, Durham.— Bow- street, July 23. On the 16th instant, a dwelling- house at Ash, near Dartford, was broken aud entered, aud £ 11 in Gold stolen therein. Bv a man about 31 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark hair and whiskers, cut close, light blue eyes, anchor tattooed on right arm ; dressed iu round drab twill slop, and black billycock hat, and a native of Ash, is suspected. Information to be given to Superintendent Fread, Police Station, Dartford, Kent.— Bow- street, July 21. Stolen on the Race Course during the Worcester Races : a gold hunting Watch, capped, No. 3122 or 5122, maker Peulington, Liverpool ; a gold lever Watch, with Chain, & c., attached, maker's name Lucas, or Jacob and Lucas, Hull; a silver lever Ditto, ' Edmund Philpott' marked on inside of case, and face cracked ; a silver Geneva ditto, with ' J. S.' ou outside case. Information to be given to the Head Constable, Worcester.— Bow- street, July 21. During the night of the 16th instant the dwelling- house of Mrs. Amblen, No. 8, Derby- road, Watford, was broken into and the following articles stolen : 1 plated Fish Slice and Fork in morocco case, the case being lined with blue silk. 1 silver Tea Caddy Spoon. 1 pair of silver Sugar Tongs. 1 blue Dress, trimmed with black ruching. 1 crimson Petticoat, trimmed with black braid and lined behind with American cloth. 1 brown skirt with one flounce. 1 spotted muslin Bodice, trimmed with black lace. 1 black cloth Jacket, trimmed with imitation astracan. 1 white Jacket, trimmed with black velvet. 1 old black cloth Jacket. 1 slate- coloured satin cloth Dress, flounced. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Found at Northfield, on the 3rd instant, and supposed to have been stolen : a half- bred bay Mare, aged, and in good condition, about 14 hands high, hind fetlocks white, star on forehead, and is slightly broken winded. Information to be given to Superintendent Humphries, King's Heath, near Birmingham, Warwickshire.— Bow- street, July 25. Found in the parish of Hagley on the 15th instant, eight Welsh ewe Sheep, very small, two marked with the letter ' H.' on the left side ; and a red short- horned Heifer ( all supposed to have been stolen). Information to be given to Superintendent Freeman, Stourbridge, Worcestershire.— — Bow- street, July 23. Stolen on the 5th instant from Lea- bridge- road, a dark brown Gelding, 13 hands 3 inches high, star on forehead, hind heels white, saddle marked, small speck in off eye, white spot on off fore foot, nearly thorough bred, and in good con- dition.— Metropolitan Police, N Dicision, July 23. Stolen on the 7th instant, from a field at Page Bank Colliery, a black horse Pony, about 14 hands high, 3 years old, white stripe on face, tail cut square, has a slight halt when trotting, small body, and in good condition, the pro- perty of Messrs. Bell Brothers, Page Bank Colliery. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Dunn, Durham County Constabulary, Durham, Northumberland.— Bow- st., July 21. Stolen from Chobham, on the night of the 19th instant : a brown nag Gelding, very dark brown legs, 6 years old, 15 hands high, switch tail, has been docked, the property of Mr. Collyer. Information to be given to Superintendent Bungard, Surrey Constabulary, Chertsey.— Bow- st., July 21. Stolen from the Mountain at Llangunnider, on the 20th ultimo : a brown Pony mare, about 13 hands high, 3 years old, dark legs, tail cut, marked ' P.' on near siiieunder saddle, has some white hairs on fore legs, where the hairs has been rubbed off by fetters. Also a chestnut Colt mare, 2 months old, white star on forehead ; the property of Mr. William Price, Pengarn, Llangunnider. By two men : one about 48 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark hair, small dark whiskers, clean chin, roman nose ; dressed in a velveteen jacket, cotton cord breeches and leggings, black bowler hat, and is splay footed. The other about 60 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high ; dressed iu old grey jacket and vest, cotton cord breeches and leggings, and black bowler hat. Both men spoke Welsh, and are supposed to be natives of Carmarthenshire, had the appearance of low dealers or cattle drovers. Information to be given to Superintendent Evans, Crickhowell, Breconshire.— Bow- street, July 21. Found at Brownhills, on the 9th instant, and supposed to have been stolen : a hack Horse, aged, grey ( nearly white) colour, with a few brown hairs intermixed, about 14 hands high, knees slightly broken, tail cut level, hair rubbed off in several places, three cuts on off hip, like scissor marks, and mane plaited with straw. Information to be given to Superintendent Hill, Brownhills, near Walsall, Staffordshire. — Bow- street, July 18. Stolen on the 14th or 15th instant, from a field at Starch Green, Hammersmith : a brown Gelding, 16 hands 2 inches high, off fore foot white, star on forehead, pimples on shoulders, in good condition.— Metropolitan Police, T Division, July 18. Stolen, between the 5th and 15th instant, from Sandwell Park, West Bromwich : ten wether Sheep, of the Cotswold breed, the property of Messrs. Hodgetts and Willis, of West Bromwich. The sheep have been recently shorn. .£ 20 reward will be paid to any person or persons who will give such information as will lead to the recovery of the sheep and apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders. July 25 LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Absconded from Staffordshire, ou the 14th instant, charged with stealing a quantity of Wearing Apparel, most of which has been found pledged : a woman, supposed to be a fortune- teller, about 50 years of age, 6 feet 5 iuches high, very dark, and of gipsy- like appearance ; dressed in a black dress, black hat, with broad brim, trimmed with black ribbon. She was traced to Wolverhampton, where some of the stolen articles were found pledged. Information to be giveu to Inspector Bowen, Guildhall, Stafford.— Bow- street, July 25. Absconded on the 19th instant, from Empingham, Rutland, charged on a warrant with stealing £ 1 10s. in gold, the property of Edmund Hill, his fellow lodger: JOHN HART, a native of Doddington, Isle of Ely, masons labourer, 18 or 19 years of age, 5 feet high, light complexion and hair, cut short, two large scars on right cheek, and inkneed ; dressed in old pilot jacket, mended at elbows, grey striped cloth waistcoat, fustian trousers, checked woclleu shirt, old blucher boots, and black tnuller hat. Will be likely to seek employment as a masons labourer. Information to be given to Sergeant Rowland, Empingham, or to the Chief Constable of the County, Oakham, Rudland.— Bow- street, July 25. Absconded, on the 17tli iustant, from Brixton- road, charged with embezzling £ 11, the moneys of his master : a man, 21 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, dark complexion, hair, eyes, and moustache ; dressed in light trousers and vest, dark cutaway coat, side- spring boots, and deerstalker hat.— Metropolitan Police, W Division, July 25. Stolen from Pen- y- park Farm, LIoc, near Holywell, on the 23rd iustant: a pair of black cloth Trousers, nearly new, lined with calico, and waistband with puce colour lining ; a pair of new black and brown striped Trousers, not lined ; and a plain gold Ring, much worn and broken. By a Welshman, between 40 and 50 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, dark hair, and large dark whiskers ; dressed in black cloth cap, old brown cloth overcoat, and dark cloth trousers. In- formation to be given to Superintendent Hughes, Holywell, Flintshire.— Bow- street, July 25. Description of two men, charged with stealing at Carlisle two gallons of Sherry from a waggon in North British Rail- way Company's Good Yard on the 20th instant : JAMES WARD, a breaksman and a native of Carlisle, from 38 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark brown hair, cut short, dark eyes, swarthy complexion, short tuft of hair on chin, average build, and round shoulders ; dressed in suit of dark tweed, and soft felt billycock hat. And ANDREW GRIERSON, a breaksman and a native of Ruthwell, Dumfrieshire, 28 to 30 years of age, 5 ft. 5 or 6 ins. high, slender build and smart appearance, dark brown hair, dark eyes and complexion, heavy dark moustache, no beard or whiskers ; and may be dressed partly in Railway Com- pany's clothes. Information to be given to Sergeant Cowen, City Police Office, Carlisle, who holds warrants for their apprehension.— Bow- street, July 23. Absconded from London, charged on a warrant with embezzlement: GEORGE BOWEN, 20 years of age, 5 feet .10 inches high, pale complexion, thin, subject to fits. Infor- mation to be given to Inspector Bailey, Police Station, Old Jewry, London.— Bow- street, July 21. Stolen from Sittingbourne, on the 6th instant, the property of Benjamin Tyler : two pairs of blucher Boots, one pair with holes stamped in front, the other pair nailed. By GEORGE YOUNG, 35 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, very dark swarthy complexion, aud has a speck in left eye ; dressed in cap with narrow check band, long light over- coat or guernsey, and dark cord ( porter's) trousers. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Mayne, Police Court, Sittingbourne, Kent, who holds a warrant for his apprehen- sion.— Bow- street, July 21. Stolen on the 12tli instant, from the dwelling- house of Mr. Joseph Anstey, Whitley, near Coventry : a lady's gold Watch, open face, - f- plate, French make, No. 46721, picture dial, subject, a church with river, and man in a boat. By a draper's assistant named FREDERICK READ, 28 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches bigh, light hair and whiskers, lost a tooth in upper jaw, and others very much decayed, mole under right eye ; dressed in black cloth coat, with pockets on the hips, double breasted vest, embroidered with violet flowers, light trousers, and elastic- side boots; supposed to be a native of Liverpool. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Con- stable J ervis, Warwickshire Constabulary, Kenrlworth, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, July 21. Stolen from a jeweller's shop in Windsor, on the after- noon of the 17th instant, a diamond half- hooo Ring, five stones brilliant- cut, value £ 23 10s. By two " men of the following description : one is about 5 feet 10 inches high, from 35 to 40 years of age, very dark complexion, and deeply narked smallpox ; had on a high black hat and black coat; carried an umbrella aud wor e spectacles at the time; the other is from 5 feet 7 to 9 high, from 30 to 35 years of age, aud light complexion ; had on a brown or black felt hat, and French grey tie. £ 5 reward will be paid on the recovery of the property and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Superintendent Hayes, Windsor, Berks.— Bow- street, July 21. Absconded from Bungay, in the county of Suffolk, charged with stealing from the person of Thomas Smith, at the Swan Inn, Harleston. Norfolk, on the 7th inst.: HENRY PLUMB, alias BITCHER, drover, 20 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, fresh complexion, full round face, brown hair, cut short and inclined to curl, no whiskers, and light eyes ; dressed when last seen in sleeved waistcoat, with brown fronts, cotton cord trousers, fitting tight to the legs, militia boots, and grey billycock hat. Is likely to seek employment as a drover. Information to be given to Superintendent Ward, Police Station, Pulham, Harleston, Norfolk, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, July 21. Description of JOHN CROOKS, a painter, charged with stealing £ 2 10s. at Matlock, on the 12th instant: he is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, ruddy complexion, light hair, no whiskers or moustache, slight made, ami smart appearance ; dressed when last seen iu black coat and vest, drab check cloth trousers, and elastic- side boots. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Sharpe, Wirksworth, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Boio- street, July 21. Absconded from the borough of South port, on the 30th ultimo : THOMAS HENRY LIDDALL, bookkeeper, charged with embezzling several sums of money belonging to Mr. Constantino Gialoussv, dealer in stationey, fancy goods, & c., iu whose employ he was up to the time of absconding ; is 17 years of age, about 5 feet 10 inches high, pale com- plexion, slender, anu dark brown hair; dressed when last seen in a dark grey mixture cloth suit and hard billycock hat ; was seen in Liverpool the next day, endeavouring to enlist in the army, and on being told that he would have to remain in Liverpool about a weeK before he could be sent away if he enlisted, he said it would not suit him to do that, and would go to Dublin. Information to be giveu Head Constable Kershaw, Town Hall, Southport, Lancashire, who holds a waritmt for his apprehension.— Bow- street, July 21. Absconded on the 14th instant, charged with stealing £ 3 4s. 9£ d., the money of his master : a youth, 17 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fair complexion and hair; dressed iu brown coat, cord trousers, and cheesecutter cap.— Metro- politan Police, C Division, July 18. Absconded from Crewe, on the 15th instant, charged with stealing a black covered Book, ' C. S. C.' on the back, and on the first leaf is written ' Thomas Whitting, in a/ c with the Crewe Co- operative Society, Limited,' aud after stealing the book, he obtained the following Articles at the Co- operative Society's Stores, Crewe, by falsely pretending that he was Whitting's son : a black and red plaid woollen Shirt; a green, black, and white plaid woollen Shirt; two Collars ; a pair of grey cotton Stockings j a pair of lace- up Boots, rivetted soles, No. 9 size ; a pair of elastic- side Boots, No. 9 size; he is wearing the latter and the stockings. WiLLIAM SMITH, alias HILL, lately a labourer iu Crewe works, about 20 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, light hair, pale looking, sunburnt, and blue eyes; dressed in a light reefer jacket, round black billycock hat, tweed waistcoat, and either blue cloth or cotton cord trousers.
