CONTAINING The iybstakte of all Informations received in eases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, report Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged will Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 5360 FKIDAY, MAY 23, 1873. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting Supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MB. W. D. BUENABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. O. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested oopy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. Aa no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all betters addressed to the Editor snnst be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserteri and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without hie authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. At 7- 45 p. m. ou the 6th instant, a woman was seen to go into a privy in Oldfield- lane, New Wortley ; after she had left, the following child's clothing was found : a .. long white cotton Gown, a white flannel Gown, a Napkin, a Sheet, a Body Binder, a piece of white Flaunel, and part of a child's feeding Bottle. On the 10th instant, the dead body of a male child, 10 or 12 days old, was found, partly covered with earth, in a ditch near the Upper Wortley Cemetery, and a woman was seen near the place where the body was found. It is supposed that the woman who deposited the clothes in the privy is the same person seen near the ditch : she is about ' 34 years of age, tall, pale, sickly looking, and rather thin ; dressed in dark bonnet or hat, blue jacket, old black or dark stuff gown, and had a fall to her head- dress. WILLIAM CHILDS, charged with uttering a forged Bill of Exchange for £ 200, on the 1st February last: he is 40 years of age, 5 feet G inches high, fair complexion, sandy bail', whiskers, beard, and moustache, turning grey, bald, large nose ; suffers from rheumatic gout in left hand ; dressed respectable, and is likely to go abroad.— Metropolitan Polici, C Division, May 14. intendent Jarvis, Police Station, Horncastle, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, May 16. Stolen from the person of two gentlemen at Presteigne Fair, on the 9th instant : an old- fashioned silver verge Watch, No. 3051, makers Savoy and Sons, London ; a small silver verge Watch, No. 24514, maker Meyer, Hereford, the point ef hour hand broken off. Information to be given to Chief Constable Wheeldon, Penybont, Radnorshire.-- Bow- st., May 16. Stolen from the person, on the 7th instant, in Hereford : a gold j- plate lever Watch, much worn, with the figures ' 17570 ' scratched on inside case ; and a silver Geneva ditto, maker Hanby and Son, London, No. 18709. Information to be given to Head Constable Davies, Hereford.— Bow- street, May 14. Stolen on the 21st ultimo, from a passenger in a second- class carriage between Cosham and Landport, London and South Western Railway, returning from Hambledon Races, a silver lever hunting Watch, double bottom, capped and jewelled, maker Simpson, Gosport, No. 7234. Information to be given to Superintendent, Potter, Waterloo- bridge Station, London.—. Bow- street, May 14. ROBBERY AND LARCENY PROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of a gentleman between St. Leonard's- on- Sea, aud Eastbourne Races, on the 16th instant, a gold Hunting Watch, with white dial and minute hand, an unicorn's head engraved on case. Information to be given to Superintendent Waghorn, Hailsham, or to the Sergeant on duty, Police Station, Eastbourne, Sussex.— Bow- street, May 21. Stolen from the person of John Powell, May Fair, on the 12th instant : an English lever Watch, name on dial— 1 T. J. Jenkins, ' jewelled, No. 41061. Also stolen from the person of William Powell, a labourer, at the May Fair, on the 12th instaut: an old- fashioned silver verge Watch, with steel Chain and Seal attached, the name of ' Probert'on inside case, No. 610. Information to be given to Superintendent Wheeldon, Monmouth.— fiow- ct., May 19. Stolen from the person of a lady at Whitstable, Kent, on the 15th instant : a small gold hunting Watch, the outside case has a small glass in the centre, with blue enamel figures, white face ; had attached a long Guard, imitation gold, with large chain links. Information to be given to Superintendent Walker, Kent Constabulary, Canterbury.— Bow- st., May 19. Description of a man who stopped William Davey, at Baumber, on the night of the 9th instant on the highway, and presented a pistol at him and demanded his money and watch, which he gave up ( viz., about £ 9 in Gold and Silver, in an old greasy double canvas Purse ; and a silver verge Watch, No. 1174, marked inside case ' F671,' with twisted steel Chain and two old brass Coins attached) : about 27 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark hair and whiskers round the face ; dressed in brown melton overcoat, light- ccloured trousers with dark stripes, a black billycock hat, long drab slop, worked in front aud back, bright leggings, strap across shoulder, aud carried a bass. He sold the watch at Grimsby, on the 10th instant, and stopped a man at Cleethorpe on the 13tb, ( he had then the slop on), presented the pistol at him and demanded his money ( is. 4d. was given to him ; he gave the name of FURNELL. During the night of the 18th instant, from the shop of Mr. Peter Horden, pawnbroker, Kettering, the following articles : thirteen silver Watches, with the tickets attached to them as follows : one No. 2293, ticket 655 ; one consular verge, No. 3062, ticket 653 ; one ditto, No. 5690, ticket 640 ; one No. 1429, supposed Geneva, ticket 614 ; one pair- case verge, No. 4386, ticket 611 ; one large consular verge, I No. 5021), ticket 579 ; one No. 12324, ticket 493 ; one No. 74, ticket 481 ; one verge, No. 1575, with steel Chain attached, , ticket 448 ; one small verge hunting, No. 5117 & 5113, winds up in front, ticket 413; one No. 892, ticket 374; one No. 7786, ticket 340; one No. 15695, ticket 27 ; a silver albert Chain, twisted with bar, ticket 606 ; a pair of Boots, ticket 468 ; a pair of man's spring- side Boots, ticket 537 ; a Dress, ticket 654 ; a black cloth Coat, for a youth, bound with braid, short skirt, pockets outside with flaps; a black cloth Coat, ticket 686. A reward of £ 5 will be paid by Mr. Hordeu to any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Superintendent Stoker, or to Inspector Norman, Police Station, Kettering, Northamptonshire.— Bow- street, May 21. Between 1 and 2 o'clock on the morning of the 14th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. Janion, Irwell- laue, Runcorn, was broken into and entered, and the following articles stolen : a pair of heavy silver Sugar Tongs, marked ' W. E. K. ;' a silver Thimble ; and a jet Brooch and Guard to match ; a new Screwdriver and Treacle Can were left in back yard. Information to be given to Superintendent Aston, Police Station, Runcorn, Cheshire.— Bow- st., May 19. Between 12 p. m. the 8th and 4 a. m. the 9tli instant, the Booking Office of Cradley Heath Railway Station was entered and three drawers in the office were forced open and about Eight Shillings iu Copper, three Keys, and two Boxes stolen therefrom, the two small Boxes were found in a field near the Station, where they had been opened and the con- tents, consisting of Feathers, Beans, Onions, and other Articles were strewed about the field. Two men were seen by the station window ; they appeared to be young men and were dressed in dark clothes. On the night of the 8th instant- the Old Hill Railway' Station, Great Western Railway, was broken aud entered, and the following articles stolen therefrom : a Portmanteau, con- taining three Shirt Collars, white linen ; a black cloth frock Coat, bound with black silk braid, nearly new ; a blue cloth Saxony Overcoat, loose shape, with black velvet collar, nearly new ; and a Wine Flask, covered with light brown leather. Between 4 a. m. aud 8 a. m. the 8th instaut, the house of Mr. Edward Grice, of Quarry Bank, Brierley Hill, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen therefrom : two Half- Sovereigns and a quantity of Copper Money, a black cloth Coat, single breasted, with pockets on the outside of skirts; and a pair of elastic- side Boots, with buttons up front. Information to be given to Superintendent Mills, Police Office, Brierley Hill, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, May 19. On the night of the 14th instant, the goods shed at Brownhills Railway Station, was broken into, and the following articles stolen : a gallon Jar of Whiskey ; a J ar of Liquid, used in preserving ale ; 63 yards of black Alpaca, four Shirts ; twelve insertion Fronts ; twelve Handkerchiefs; and a J duck Jacket, sample, from a bale. The bale wrapper was found ou the canal side near the shed, aud a number of stolen articles consisting of Braces, Stockings, & c. therein. Information to be given to Superintendent Hill, Brownhills Station, near Walsall, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, May 19. Betweeu 11' 30 p. m. and 1 a. m. on the night of the 17th and morning of the 18th instant, the Railway Station at Aston, near Birmingham, was entered, aud the following articles stolen therein : about 8s. in Coppers, and a small iron Safe containing about £ 5 in Gold aud Silver; the safe was afterwards found iu the canal near the station. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Gallaway, Police Station, Aston, ne Birmingham, ar Warwickshire.— Low- St., May 19. Stolen from the dwelling houBe of the Rev. Dr. Burges, Bishop Ryder's Vicarage, Sutton- street, Aston, during the night of the 9th ultimo : a French drawing- room Clock, with gilt figure on top, maker ' M. Dennibrass, Boulogne,' marked on centre of face ; also a silver paper Knife, with ivory handle, and the initials ' J. H. B.' marked on the side. A reward of £ 2 will be paid for the recovery of the property, and appre- hension of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Superintendent Gallaway, Police Station, Aston, near Bir- mingham"— Bow- st., May 19. Between 2 and 6 p. m. on the 13th instant, the dwelling- house of Jonathan Jackson Shepherd, of Pott Shrigley, near Macclesfield, was broken and entered, and stolen therein: a black cloth Shooting Jacket, with two pockets outside and one inside left Breast, with covered buttons ; a black cloth Vest with roll collar, pockets at the sides and watch ditto on breast, with black covered buttons; and 6s. 10d. in Money. Information to be given to Superintendent Williamson, County Police Office, Macclesfield, Cheshire — Bow- street, May 16. On the 11th instant, the cottage of Mrs. Pallett, in the parish of Ansley, was broken into, and the following property stolen : a pair of calico Sheets ; a plum- coloured stuff Dress, with yellow and black crossed stripes, trimmed with black lace ; a pair of goloshed Boots, cloth tops, lace- up fronts ; a pair of white lamb's wool Stockings ; a black Shawl, deep- coloured border ; a pair of black cloth Gloves ; two white Skirts, one dimity, the other calico. By a young girl about 16 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair; she was afterwards seen wearing, the whole of the clothing, the dress is much too short, her own clothing were left behind. Information to be given to Superintendent Austin, Nuneaton, Warwickshire.— Bow- street, May 14. Stolen from a dwelling- house in Bolton, between 6' 20 and 8T5p. m. on the 11th instant, by means of false keys : a gold Brooch, with purple stone in centre ; a pair of gold Ear- rings, set with purple stones; a plain round gold Locket, tliin gold Chain attached : a silver verge Watch, double case, white dial, and gold hands, maker E. Dunn, Bolton, No. 4256 ; a silver verge Watch, cream- coloured dial; aud £ 6 10s. in Gold. Supposed by two men : one is about 26 years of age 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, slender make, little whiskers, light complexion and hair, aud turns his toes out very much; dressed iu dark tweed clothes ( vest trimmed with fur, trousers tight at knees), and black billycock hat; had a heavy watch chain with pendants, and a spiral walking stick ; the other of dark complexion, not so tall as the first, and wore a black billycock hat. £ 2 reward will be paid for the apprehension and con- viction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the pro- perty, or in proportion thereof. Information to be given to Chief Constable Beech, Bolton, Lancashire.— Bow- street, May 14. On the 8th instant, about 11 p. m., the Great Western Railway office, at Old- hill railway station, in the parish of Rowley Regis, was broken into, and a brown cloth Overcoat stolen, the property of Mr. H. O. Roke, Breffni House, Dublin. Information to be given to Superintendent Mills, Police Office, Brierley- hill, Staffordshire.— Bow- st., Mjy 14. During the night of the 9th instant, the house of the Rev. J. Hankinson, Queen street, Leek, was burglariously entered and the following property stolen therefrom : a small black ebony Timepiece; one pair of gentlemen's elastic side Boots ; one pair of ladies kid Ditto, nearly new ; two pairs of black kid Gloves ; one metal mustard Spoon, marked ' H'; one pair of small Scissors ; and a small Pocket Book, containing memoranda. ( Information to be given to Superintendent Williams, Leek, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, May 14. Stolen from the person, at Chester Races, on the 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th instant, the following property : A gold lever Watch, maker Roskell, Liverpool, No. 22687. A gold lever Watch, maker Carroll, Congleton, No. 97S76 ; £ 5 reward will be paid for recovery of same and conviction of the offender or offenders. A silver verge Watch, hunting cases, maker Davies, Chester, No. 3623. A silver lever Watch, hunting cases, maker Blundell, Liverpool, ' Ralph Dean' engraved on inside case, aud ' R. D.' outside. A gold lever Watch, hunting cases, No. 15429. A silver verge Watch, maker Robert Fletcher, Chester, No. 1153. A small gold lever Watch, maker Barrand and Lund, London, No. 4926. A silver lever Watch, makers Lowe and Sons, Chester, No. 29021. A gold lever Watch, J- plate, maker B. East, Birmingham, No. 4,343 ; £ b reward will be paid for recovery of same and conviction of tue offender or offenders. A silver lever Watch, No. 5755. A silver Geneva Watch, No. 1625. Information to be given to the nearest Police Office, or by telegraph, to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Chester.— Bow- street, May 14. On the night of the 10th instant the Railway Station of Perry Barr was broken into, and the following articles stolen : about £ 1 0s. 6d. in Silver and Coppers; twelve yards of new white Calico, wide width ; and two small pocket Knives ; which have white handles, one has four blades, and the other o P O L l U b GAZETTE. May 23 has the point broken off. Heamstead Railway Station was broken into on tne same night, but not anything stolen. Two men were seen loiteriug ne; ir the latter station : one is about 33 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, and rather stout ; dressed in dark clothes and black billycock hat; the other is about 28 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high ; dressed in dark clothes and black billycock hat. Information to be given to Sergeant Hackney, Handsworth, near Birmingham, or at any Police Station in Staffordshire.— Bow- street, Jlay 14. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Found straying at Milford, Lymington, on the 3rd inst., and supposed to have strayed from New Forest: a dark grey Gelding, about 2 years old, about 1 jA bauds high, white star on forehead, long tail, no i. hoes cn, the letter ' P' on near shoulder, and in goQd condition. Information to be given to Superintendent Stephenson, Hants Constabulary, Lyndhurst, or to Sergeant Rodaway, Lymington, Hampshire.— Bmv- street, May 23. Stolen from a stable at Chester, on the morning of the 22nd instant : a dapple grey Horse, 15J hands high, 6 years old, nearly thorougbred, rather thin docked tail, scar on near hind hock, white spot, the size of a crown piece under the saddle ou the near side, the property of an officer in the Yeomanry Cavalry ; the stable had been entered by skeleton keys ; a military Saddle and head Collar were stolen at the same time. Stolen on the night of the lilth instant, from Carlton Colville : a dark brown mare Donkey, aged, long shabby coat, hair off top of hip, turns the left forefoot inwards, and is in low condition. Information to be given to Inspector Jeffries, Lowestoft, or to P. C. Phillips, Carlton Colville, Suffolk.— Bow- street, May 21. Stolen from a field at Robin. Hood Farm, Hallgreen, parish of Yardley, on the night of the 9th instant: a chestnut Gelding, 15 hands high, white spot on forehead ; an iron- grey Filly, about 13 hands high ; and a brown Filly, 14 hands high, small white mark on the inner side of the nostril on the oft' side, white star on forehead, very long mane and tail ; all rising 3 years old. £ 5 reward will be paid to any person who will give such information as shall lead to the apprehen- sion and conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the horses, upon application to Mr. Henry Mills, of the Dartmouth Arms, Dartmouth- street, Birmingham. Found strayed at Buckingham, on the 17th instant, and supposed to have been stolen : a light bay horse Pony, aged, about 12i bauds high, in good condition, long tail, both knees broken, hind shoes oft. Stolen from Castlerising Common, on the 6th iustaut, a m^ aly- coloured horned Heifer, two years old, the property of Mrs. Smith, of the said parish. Information to be given to Superintendent Rose, Dorking, or to Inspector Carter, Grimston, King's Lynn.— Bow- street, Ma / 19. Stolen from a field at East Grinstead, on the night of the 13th instant : a bay mare Pony, aged, about 13 hands high, hind feet white, white streak down the face, and a little lame ou the off fore leg. Stolen from a field on the Monks'- road, Lincoln, during the night of the 8th instant: a red at d wnite Cow, with very wide horns, having a clip ou right thig'i, aud calved about, three weeks ago. Stolen on the 9th instant, from the Hill Top Farm, Ledbury : a browu mare Pony, aged, about 1hands high, with long mane aud tail. Information to be given to Super- intendent Blunsdou, Ledbury, Herefordshire. — Bow- street, May 16. Stolen, on the night of the 10th instant, a white cart Horse, very large, a brown cart Horse, and a big brown cart Mare, with black logs : the property of Mrs. Bulpin, of Midgel Farm, Chelvey, near Nailsea, Somerset. Information to be given to Superintendent Jones, Flax Bourton, near Bristol, Somerset.— How- street, May 14. Paddiogton, charged with stealing a drab livery great Coat, silver buttons, creit— a helmet, motto ' Mon Trevor' thereon; a pair of livery Trousers ; a black Hat, with cockade; aud a £ 10 Bank of England Note : a youth, 16 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fair complexion and hair ; supposed to be dressed in the stolen clothes.-. Metropo- litan Police, D Division, May 21. Absconded on the 16th instant, from Arundel- street, Strand, charged with stealing £ 3 in Gold : a man, 20 years of age, 6 feet high, fair complexion and hair ; dressed in a black walking coat, Irish frieze trousers and vest, round black hat, and side- spring boots.— Metropolitan Police, E Division, May 21. Description oi JOHN FLINN, alias CHAPMAN, who absconded from Hyde on the 12th iustaut, charged with stealing about £ 6 in Gold and Silver : he is 30 years of age, 5 feet 2i inches high, slender make, fresh complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, walks quick and upright, star back of right baud, mole on left cheek, cut on first finger left hand ; he was discharged from Pentonville Prison on the 29th o£ last November, having served 7 years penal servitude. Informa- tion to be giveu to Captain Arrowsmith, Deputy Chief Constable of Cheshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehen sion.— Bow- st> eet, May 19. Absconded on the 10th instant, from Goswell- road, charged with embezzling the sum of £( j, the money of his master : a man age 20, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion, brown hair aud eyes ; dressed in dark clothes.— Metropolitan Police, G Division, May 19. EDWARD MURRAY COPPINGER, charged with embezzlement, 45 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, dark hair and whiskers, bald on top of head, full face, very much marked with small pox, round shoulders, and stoops ; dressed respectably ; a literary man. Information to be given to Inspector Bailey, City of London Police, Detective Depart- ment, 26, Old Jewry, E. C., who holds a warrant for his ap- prehension.— Bow- street, May 19. GEORGE CARTER THORPE, charged with embez- zling a large sum of Money belonging to the overseers of the township of Ardwick, is about 53 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 j inches high, full face, florid complexion, whiskers inclined ment- house keeper at the rail station, Winchester, who is charged at Portsmouth with obtaining six gentlemen's solid gold finger Rings ( one red or white stonp in each) by false pretences : he is about 35 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, sandy hair and whiskers, and recently has had a black eye ; dressed in dark coat and vest, light trousers, high black hat,, and wears a horseshoe pin ( blue stones, two missing) in his necktie. Ije is well known throughout Hampshire. Infor- mation to be given to Head Constable Barber, Portsmouth,, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- st., May 23. Description of two men charged with being concerned' with a man in custody on a charge of Fraud : JOHN CADABY, 45 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark com- plexion, hair, and whiskers, no moustache, aud bald on top of head ; dressed in a short black coat, light trousers, round hard hat, and no necktie'f wears a stud in collar and ring on little finger of right hand ; has stables in Church- row, Shore- ditch ; aud THOMAS SMITH, 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, dark complexion and hair, small whiskers, Roman nose, aud irregular teeth ; dressed in a short black coat, pockets on hips, and dark trousers fitting tight.— Metropolitan Police, E Division, Ma y 19. CHARLES JAMES BOSDET, of 5, < Grange.- terrace, Brompton, aud 16, Great Winchester- street, City, is charged with fraud : about 36 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, brown hair, small eyes, pale complexion, broad forehead, high cheek bones, small moustache, no whiskers ; dressed in a single- breasted sac coat, aud high hat with black band. Information to be given to Inspector Bailey, City of Loudon Police, Detective Department, 26, Old Jewry, London, E. G. — Bow- street, May 16. Obtaiued by false pretences from Mr. A. Lyons, jeweller, Chatham, ou the 9th instant, a gold open- face lever Watch, gold dial, No. 5386 : by a mau, about 18 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, and dressed in a stuff coat, very large plaid, plaid trousers, and soft black billycock hat.
