CONTAINING The 4MbstOKte of all Informations received, in oases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Pecewers of Stolen Goods, rgnd*) Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged wtfc Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marts of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 5357 FRIDAY, MAY 16, 1873. Notice.— It requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or tending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MB. W. D. BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, Iiondon, W. O. Whenever it is desires! that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information Bhould be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, • of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. AS no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor mast be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the MiUtia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUIS DING. At T' 45 p. m. on the 6th instant, a woman was seen to go into a privy iu Oldfield- lane, New Wortley ; after she had left, the following child's clothing was found : a]_ long white cotton Gown, a white flannel Gown, a Napkin, a Sheet, a Body Binder, a piece of white Flannel, and part of a child's • feeding Bottle. On the 10th iustaut, the dead body of a male child, 10 or 12 days old, was found, partly covered with earth, in a ditch near the Upper Wortley Cemetery, and a woman was seen near the place where the body was found. It is supposed that the woman who deposited the clothes in the privy is the same person seen near the ditch : she is about 34 years of age, tall, pale, sickly looking, and rather thin ; dressed in dark bonnet or hat, blue jacket, old black or dark stuff gown, and had a fall to her head- dress. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Leeds.— Bow- street, May 14. On the afternoon of the 3rd instant, the dead Body of a female child, 4 or 5 months old, was found on Haywards- J heath, in the parish of Cuckfield : the child had light hair, and four vaccination marks on left arm ; had on an old cotton night gown, shirt, swathe, and napkin, and wrapped in part of an old black shawl. A woman of the following description was seen about 9' 30 a. m. on the 1st instant, carrying a parcel, similar to that found, also a small carpet bag, and soon after was seen coming in the direction from the place where the child was found, without the parcel, but still carrying the bag, and went to the railway station at about 11: 20 a. m., and left for Brighton, she is about 30 years of age ; dressed in light cotton dress, rusty black velvet jacket, supposed black hat, with black fall, which she kept over her face. An inquest was held on the 5th instant, and adjourned till 6 p. m. on the 22nd instant. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Lewes, or to Superin- tendent Pocock, Cuckfield, Sussex.— Bow- street, May 7. FORGERY. WILLIAM CHILDS, charged with uttering a forged Bill of Exchange for £ 200, on the 1st February last: he is 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion, sandy hair, whiskers, beard, and moustache, turning grey, bald, large nose ; suffers from rheumatic gout in left hand ; dressed respectable, and is likely to go abroad.— Metropolitan Police, C Division, May 14. A man, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark complexion, well built, and dressed in a dark cloth suit and blue chesterfield overcoat, got a forged Cheque cashed at the Knaresborough Old Bank on the afternoon of the 6th instant. He obtained a 2s. blank cheque- book from the Yorkshire Banking Company, Ripon, on the 5th instant, stating that it was for Mr. Stephen Tomlinson, who had an account with them. Information to be given to Superintendent Haworth, West Biding Constabulary, Knaresborough.— Bow- street, May 12. slop, worked in front and back, bright leggings, strap across shoulder, aud carried a bass. He sold the watch at Grimsby, on the 10th instant, and stopped a man at Cleethorpe on the 13th, ( he had then the slop on), presented the pistol at him and demanded his money 6s. 4d. was given to him ; he gave the name of FURNELL. Information to be given to Super- intendent Jarvis, Police Station, Horncastle, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, May 16. Stolen from the person of two gentlemen at Presteigne Fair, on the 9th instant : an old- fashioned silver verge Watch, No. 3051, makers Savoy and Sons, London ; a small silver verge Watch, No. 24514, maker Meyer, Hereford, the point ef hour hand broken off. Information to be given to Chief Constable Wheeldon, Penybont, Radnorshire.- - Bow- st., May 16. Stolen from the person, on the 7th instant, in Hereford : a gold j- plate lever Watch, much worn, with the figures ' 17570' scratched on inside case; and a silver Geneva ditto, maker Hanby and Son, London, No. 18709. Information to be given to Head Constable Davies, Hereford.— Bow- street, May 14. Stolen on the 21st ultimo, from a passenger in a second- class carriage between Cosham and Landport, London and South Western Railway, returning from Hambledon Races, a silver lever hunting Watch, double bottom, capped and jewelled, maker Simpson, Gosport, No. 7234. Information to be given to Superintendent Potter, Waterloo- bridge Station, London.— Bow- street, Ma. v 14. Stolen on the 25th ultimo, at Croydon Baces : a double- case gold hunting Watch, 3|- plate lever, No. 17324, makers Hammon and Sons, ' Thomas Bridgewater, Gift of his Mother in Law, April, 1862,' on inside case. £ 10 reward.— Metropo- litan Police, W Division, May 7. Stolen from the person of three gentlemen, at Sevenoaks Races, on the 3rd instant: a large- sized Opera Glass, dark barrels, with morocca leather on the off barrel ; an open- face gold French Watch, very thin ; a silver lever Watch, maker Bennett, Cheapside, London. Information to be given to Superintendent O'Kill, or to Sergeant Pope, Kent County Constabulary, Sevenoaks.— Bow- street, May 7. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Description of a man who stopped William Davey, at Baumber, on the night of the 9th instant on the highway, and presented a pistol at him and demanded his money and watch, which he gave up ( viz., about £ 9 in Gold and Silver, in an old greasy double canvas Purse ; and a silver verge Watch, No. 1174, marked inside case ' F671,' with twisted steel Chain and two old brass Coins attached)! about 27 years of a< re, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark hair and whiskers round the'face ; dressed in brown melton overcoat, light- ccloured trousers with dark stripes, a black billycock hat, loDg drab BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Between 2 and 6 p. m. on the 13th instant, the dwelling- house of Jonathan Jackson Shepherd, of Pott Shrigley, near Macclesfield, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a black cloth Shooting Jacket, with two pockets outside and one inside left breast, with covered buttons ; a black cloth Vest with roll collar, pockets at the sides and watch ditto on breast, with black covered buttons ; and 6s. lOd. in Money. Information to be given to Superintendent Williamson, County Police Office, Macclesfield, Cheshire — Bow- street, May 16. Further information respecting the man who is charged with breaking into several saddle- rooms, churches, & c., in South Staffordshire and at Clent, Worcestershire, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 5th instaut : property stolen a few weeks ago from saddle- rooms at Flour Oaks, Sutton Coldfield, and at Stoughton Grange, Leicestershire, has been traced to his possession by the Staffordshire Police. On the night of the 26th ultimo he broke into Great Barr Hall and Great Barr Church, but only stole a poker ; on the night of the 27th he entered Little Aston Hall, the residence of the Hon. Mr. Jervis, and stole therein a rough dark bluj cloth O / ercoat, lined with alpaca, and nearly new ; a short shooting Jacket, of mixed colour ; a small gold Seal, set with blood- stone, aud with a gold Ring attached ; a silver Pencilcase of octagon shape ; a small Penknife, with two blades, much worn, with dark brown bone handle ; and a wooden Pipe, with bone mouthpiece ; he broke into the stable and coach house at the same time ; ou the night of the 28th, he broke into the saddle- room at Canwell Hall, and stole .£ 16. He has been identified by a photograph as WALTER PITT, a convict ou licence who was sentenced to 7 years' penal servitude for larceny, at Usk Quarter Sessions, on the 1st January, 1867, and was discharged from Chatham Convict Prison, on the 12th June, 1872 ; he is also the man who robbed the saddle- room at Llanfihangel Court, near Abergavenny, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 11th December, 1872; he is believed to have brokea into three more saddle- rooms, in Derbyshire, near Sheffield, on the night of the 13tli instant. His ears are at once notice- able as large and droopiug. The rewards in the various cases amount to nearly £ 100. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Adams, Chief Constable's Office, Stafford, who has photographs of this man.— Bow- street, May 16. On the 11th instant, the cottage of Mrs. Pallett, iu the parish of Ansley, was broken into, and the following property stolen : a pair of calico Sheets ; a plum- coloured stuff Dress, with yellow and black crossed stripes, trimmed wi « h black lace ; a pair of goloshed Boots, cloth tops, lace- up fronts ; a pair of white lamb's wool Stockings ; a black Shawl, deep- coloured border ; a pair of black cloth Gloves ; two white Skirts, one dimity, the other calico. By a young girl about 16 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair ; she was afterwards seen wearing the whole of the clothing, the dresa is much too short, her own clothing were left behind. Information to be given to Superintendent Austin, Nuneaton, Warwickshire.— Bow- street, May 14. Stolen from a dwelling- house in Bolton, between 6" 20 and 8' 15p. m. on the 11th instant, by means of false keys : a gold Brooch, with purple stone in centre ; a pair of gold Ear- ringB, set with purple stones ; a plain round gold Locket, thin gold Chain attached : a silver verge Watch, double case, white dial, and gold bands, maker E. Dunn, Bolton, No. 4266 ; a silver verge Watch, cream- coloured dial; and £ 6 10a. in Gold. Supposed by two men : one is about 26 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, slender make, little whiskers, light complexion and hair, and turns his toes out very nmeb; dressed in dark tweed clothes ( vest trimmed with fur, trousers tight at knees), and black billycock hat; had a heavy watch chain with pendants, and a spiral walking stick ; the other of dark complexion, not so tall as the first, and wore a black billycock hat. £ 2 reward will be paid for the apprehension and eon- viction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the pro perty, or in proportion thereof. Information to be given to Chief Constable Beech, Bolton, Lancashire.— Bow- street, May 14. On the 8th instant, about 11 p. m., the Great Western Railway office, at Old- hill railway station, in the parish of Bowley Regis, was broken into, and a brown cloth Overcoat stolen, the property of Mr. H. O. Roke, Breffni House, Dublin. Information to be given to Superintendent Milla, Police Office, Brierley- hill, Staffordshire.— Bow- st., Msy 14. During the night of the 9th instant, the house of the Bev. J. Hankinson, Queen- street, Leek, was burglariously entered and the following property stolen therefrom : a small black ebony Timepiece; one pair of gentlemen's elastic side Boots ; one pair of ladies kid Ditto, nearly new ; two pairs of black kid Gloves; one metal mustard Spoon, marked ' H'; one pair of small Scissors ; and a small Pocket Book, containing memoranda. Stolen from the person, at Chester Races, on the 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th instant, the following property : A gold Iccref Watch, maker Roskell, Liverpool, No. 22687. A gold. lever Watch, maker Carroll, Conglefon, No. 97876 ; £ 5 reward will be paid for recovery of same and conviction of the offender or offenders. A silver verge Watch, hunting cases, maker Davies, Chester, No. 3623. A silver lever Watch, hunting cases, maker Blundell, Liverpool, ' Ralph Dean' engraved on inside case, and ' R. D.' outside. A gold lever Watch, hunting cases, No. 15429. A silver verge Watch, maker Robert Fletcher, Chester, No. 1153. A small gold lever Watch, maker Barrand and Lund, London, No. 4926. A silver lever Watch, makers Lowe and Sons, Chester, No. 29021. A gold lever Watch, J- plate, maker R East, Birmingham, No. 4,343 ; £ 5 reward will be paid for recovery of same and conviction of tne offender or offenders. A silver lever Watch, No. 5755. A silver Geneva Watch, No. 1625. Information to be given to the nearest Police Office, or by telegraph, to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Chester.— Bow- street, May 14. On the night of the 10th instant the Railway Station of Perry Barr was broken into, and the following articles stolen : about £ 1 0s. 6d. in Silver and Coppers ; twelve yards of new white Calico, wide width; and two small pocket Knives ; which have white handles, one has four blades, and the other has the point broken off. Heamstead Railway Station was broken into on tne same night, but not anything stolen. Two men were seen loitering Hear the latter station : one is about 33 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, and rather stout ; dressed in dark clothes aud black billycock hat; the other is about 28 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high ; dressed in dark clothes and black billycock hat. Information to be given to Sergeant Hackney, Handsworth, near Birmingham, or at any Police Station in Staffordshire.— Bow- street, May 14 During the afternoon of the 7th instant, the dwelling- house of Edward Griffiths, of Saltney, was broken into, and the following property stolen therein : a black cloth Coat, single bieasted, pocket inside left breast, and two pockets behind, marked inside of collar ' John Williamson, Burnley,' or ' Habergham, Eaves;' a pair of black Trousers; a black cloth Vest, single breasted ; a pair of lace- up Boots, with brass eyelet- holes, japanned over and nearly new, with rough tops ; a dark tweed coat, with pockets in sides; a single- breasted Vest; a pair of dark tweed Trousers, with black stripes ; a blue pilot cloth Coat, velvet collar, braided down the front, split behind ; a new black jerry Hat ; a double- breasted brown cloth Vest ; a pair of elastic- side Boots, nearly new; a silver verge Watch, old- fashioned, maker William Thomson ; £ 1 in Gold ; and three Half- Crowns in Silver. Supposed by two tramps who were seen in the neighbourhood: one about 5 feet 9 inches high, stout built, sallow complexiou, round face, whiskers about a weeks' growth, and black hair, cut short ; the other about 5 feet 7 inches high, sallow com- plexion, black hair, cut short, no whiskers; supposed to be wearing the stolen property, as they left their old clothes behind them. Stolen, by means of breaking into the shop of Mr. John Edwards, on the night of 6th instant, the following property: o. POLICE GAZETTE. Stolen on the 2nd or 3rd instant, from Park- road, Ted- dington : a gold repeater Watch, very old- fashioned, leather cover, with small holes on back of outer case ; a small silver gilt Candlestick, with embossed stand in shape of a leaf; a gold Pencilcase ; a gold Vinaigrette ; a gilt square carriage Clock, maker Detonie, Rathbone- place, London; a small mosaic Snuff- box, inlaid with gold ; three small silver miniature Frames; and a crimson cloth Tablecover, with embroidered border of gold and amber.— Metropolilatl Police, T Division, May 7. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen from a field on the Monks'- road, Lincoln, during the night of the 8th instant: a red and white Cow, with very wide horns, having a clip on right thigh, and calved about three weeks ago. Stolen on the 9th instant, from the Hill Top Farm, Ledbury : a brown mare Pony, aged, about 12i hands high, with long mane and tail. Stolen, on the night of the 10th instant, a white cart Horse, very large, a brown cart Horse, and a big brown cart Mare, with black legs : the property of Mrs. Bulpin, of Midgel Farm, Chelvey, near Nailsea, Somerset. Stolen from a field at Thornton, since the][ 3rd instant : four shearling Tups, with short tails, and a very faint maik on the near side in red paint, which is nearly worn out; the property of Mr. John Allen, of Thornton, farmer. Informa- tion to be given to Inspector Wood, Police Station, Market Weighton, East Yorkshire.— Bow- street, May 12, On the 3rd ultimo, from five to six score of Sheep, apparently a mixed lot including wethers and ewes, were left at the Turf Tavern Hotel, Wrexham. Supposed stolen by a man who stated that he would call for them in a few days, about 50 years of age, about 5 feet 7 or 8 iuches high, sandy hair and whiskers, is a Welshman, and speaks English badly ; dressed in a brown cloth jacket and waistcoat. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Bradshaw, Wrexham. — Bow- street, May 12. Found straying at Claverley, Salop, on the 4th instant, and supposed to have been stolen : a cliesnut gelding cart Horse, aged, about 14i hands high, white hind fetlocks, off forefoot white, white blaze down forehead, saddle marks on both sides of back, and in low condition, Information to be given to Superintendent Ivins, Bridgenorth, or to Police Constable ( 81) Merricks, Claverley, Salop.— Bow- st., May 12. Description of JOHN FARMER, late Of Cranleigh, Surrey, charged with feloniously stealing on the 17th of March last a live Sheep, the property of Thomas Lyon Thurlow : he is 27 years of age, 0 feet 6 inches high, light hair inclined to be saudy, few saudy whiskers aud slight moustache, round thin face, a butcher by traji. e, but attends fairs and markets as a drover, and generally wears a blue smock. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Barker, Suriey Constabulary, Guildford.— tJow- st., May 12. Stolen on the 7th and 8th instant, from a field at Black- pot- hill, Neasden: a black cart Mare, aged, 16 hands high, thick mane and foretop. By two men with horse and cart : one 25 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark complexion, whiskers, aud ( slight) moustache ; drtssed in dark overcoat, a light oueainder ditto, aud grey cap with pe; ik ; the other is 30years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, stout, fair complexion, hair, and moustache, no whiskers ; dressed in long dark blue overcoat, band buttoned round waist, black billycock hat; the horse a bay cob, aged, l.' U hands high, bent over, and in low condition ; an old- fashion dog cart, new shafts, not painted, dark body, picked out with red.— Metropolitan 1' olice, May 12. Stolen, between 9 a. m. on the 2nd aud 9 a. m. on the 3rd instant, from a field at Sandhurst, the property of Edward Collins, a Kent Ewe, marked ' E. C' in pitch on the side, tiver mark on rump, supposed under farthing near ear; also a Lamb, marked under farthing near ear. Information to be given to Superintendent Morgan, Kent Constabulary, Cran- brook.— Bow- streit, May 12. Found at Gronnant, near Prestatyn, Flintshire, on the 2nd instant, and supposed to have been stolen : a light grey horse Pony, about 13 hands high, aged, in good condition, rough coat, and shod. Information to be giveu to Superin- tendent Hughes, Holywell, or to Inspector McLaren, Rhyl, Flintshire.— Bow- street, may 9. Stolen during the night of the 25th ultimo, from a stable in Tiverton, a valuable hunting Mare ( since recovered, with a Saddle and two Biidles, one about half worn, ' Wilkinson and Kid' is stamped on the stirrup irons), which are supposed to have been stolen from some other place. A man of the following description is suspected : about 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, dark browu hair, fair complexion, no whiskers, thiu face, large feet, turns his toes out when walking, and has tender feet; dressed iu a dark blue or light grey cloth coat, grey aud black or black trousers, and elastic- side oaots. Information to be given to Superintendent Mayho, Torporley, Cheshire.— Bow- street, May 9. Stolen between 8 p. m. the 29th, and 6 a. m. on the 30th ultimo, from a field at Wood Green : a chestnut cart Horse, hands high, S years old, star on forehead, white hind fetlocks, switch tail, and iu good condition. .£ 20 reward. — Metropolitan Police, Y Division, May 7. Stolen between 6 p. m. 29th and 5 a. m. on the 30th ult., from a field at Alperton : a dark brown cart Horse, aged, 15 hands, white star cn forehead, sand crack in oif fore foot, and much swollen, and nearly blind iu one eye.— Metropolitan Police, X Division, May 7. Further particulars respecting ALFRED NAYLOR, charged with horse stealing at Toddington, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 10th ultimo, the Horse, Bridle, and Saddle, have Leen recovered, but Naylor is still at large, and is supposed to be in London; he goes by the name of DAVID. Information to be given to Superintendent Shepherd, Police Office, Woburn, Beds, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- ttreet, May 7. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Stolen from a house at Brill, at about 12 noon on the 13th instaut, the following shoemaker's Tools : a Hammer, a pair of Pincers; a Seat Wheel ; a Breaker j four forepart Irons ; and about six dozen new Awl Blades. By a tramp- ing shoemaker, about 55 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark hair turning grey, grey whiskers meeting under chin, fresh complexion, walks forward and rather stooping ; dressed in a black clotli coat, dark cloth trousers, black beaver hat, low shoes, and cotton stockings. Information to be giveu to Inspector Chaplin, Police Station, Brill, Bucks.— Bow- street, May 16. Absconded from Colchester on the 28th ultimo, charged with embezzlement : PAUL SMITH, a travelling draper or packman, a Scotchman, 21 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches hieh, red curly hair, fair complexion, his friends reside at Kihiiarnock, Scotland, but he is known in different parts of London, also in Manchester. Information to be given to Head Constable DowneS, Town Hall, Colohester, Essex, who holds a warrant far his apprehension.— Dow- street, May 16. GEORGE CARTER THORPE, charged with embez- zling a large sum of Money belonging to the overseers of the township of Ardwick, is about 53 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, full face, florid complexion, whiskers inclined to be sandy ; respectably dressed ; aud supposed to have with him several large cases. £ 5 reward will be paid for his apprehension ( if within a month from this date) by the above Overseers. Information to be given at the Town Hall, King- - street, Manchester.— Bow- street, May 16.
