The Names of Persons charged willi Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as nr-' rible, of Property thai has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 5345 FRIDAY, APRIL 18, 1873. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or tending the same, and all applications in referemce to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MB. W. D. BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. O. %* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all betters addressed to the Editor most be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Tinder Seerotary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. On the afternoon of the 13th instant the dead body of a newly- born Female Child was found in an ashpit in Bankfield- road, Huddersfield, with the throat cut and several other marks of extreme violence, and when so found could not have born more than twenty- four hours. The body was wrapped in a small list rug, a piece of au old print dress, and a ' Leeds Mercury' newspaper, dated 1st instant. Any person giving information that will lead to the discovery aud conviction of the murderer, will receive a handsome reward on application to Chief Constable Withers, Borough Police Office, Hudders- field.— Bow- street April 18. FORGERY. Absconded from Whitlyford, in the parish of Chetwynd, in the county of Salop, charged with forging and uttering a request Note, for the delivery of goods, with intent to defraud Peter Kelly, of Newport, on the 10th March, 1873 : SAMUEL CARTWRIGHT, groom or stableman, about 22 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 iuches high, sharp or thinish features, short neck, light brown hair, has generally been employed as groom or stableman at farm houses. Informa- tion to be given to Chief Superintendent Richardson, Wel- lington, or to Sergeant Christie, Newport, Salop, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, April 18. A warrant has been issued for the apprehension of ALFRED HARBOTTLE. charged with forging bank drafts and cheques, and obtaining money to the amount of £ 800, who has absconded : he is a native of Newcastle- upon- Tyne, 23 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark complexion, black hair, short dark brown beard, whiskers, and moustache, smajl dark heavy eyes, nose broken, very fiat at top and turned up at end, rather short sighted, occasionally wears spectacles, droops his head a little when walking, and is a little knock- kneed ; dressed in a dark grey speckled cloth overcoat, grey tweed trousers with dark stripe down sides, round black hard felt half- sized hat, with ( probably) a Newcastle maker's name inside, and had a silver watch with long black ribbon or guard attached ; carried a striped carpet bag, believed to contaiu a suit of black clothes; he also had with him a rough black and white small check plaid, which he may probably be wearing, and two 14 lb. packets of Fry's cocoa in wooden boxes, about 18 iuches long by 9 inches broad, one of which was covered with green American leather; he took from Newcastle £ 700 to £ 800 in gold. £ 25 will be paid to any person who will give such information as may lead to the apprehension aud conviction of the offender. Also on the 5th instant, from the person ; a gold Pin, set with ten diamonds, about the size of a fourpenny piece. Information to be given to Head Constable Hickling, Warwick.— Bow- street, April 14. Stolen from the person of a gentleman at Croxton Park Baces, on the 3rd instant : a silver lever Watch, maker Everington, Pelham- street, Nottingham, No. 37791, capped and jewelled, seconds hand off, has a small piece chipped off the dial near the figure 5, and ' George Tomlin' scratched on the inside case. Information to be given to Superintendent Platts, Melton Mowbray, or to Inspector Peberdry, Bottes- ford, Leicestershire.— Bow- street, April 9. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. During the night of the 15th or morning of the 16th instant, the residence of Mr. C. Cooper, Port Vale, Hertford, was broken and entered, and £ 10 in Gold, and a brown leather Cigar- case stolen therein : it is supposed that the offender wrapped the money iu a printed list of books, as a portion of the paper was left iu the house. Information to be given to Head Constable Jarrett, Borough Police, Hert- ford.— Bow- street, April 18. Further particulars respecting the burglary at Hurley, Berks, on the night of the 23rd ultimo, wnen the following Articles were stolen : a gold Snuff Box, about 3 inches long j aud lj deep, engraved on the outside ; a cocoanut silver- ] mounted Nutmeg Grater, ornamented ; a Dutch made silver Corkscrew, in the shape of a seal, the handle has the figure of a rabbit at one end, when the figure is unscrewed the corkscrew appears, marked ' C. S. P., August 2, 1872;' a silver Tea Spoon of the reign of George I ; a small silver Sugar Ladle, open work at bottom, Dutch made; a small round silver basket, about 4 inches in circumference, the handle falls cn I one side, filigree work ; a small round silver Tray, about 3- i- ' inches in circumference, bead pattern, one handle broken off, has a Maltese cross stamped ou bottom ; a small two- bladed j Office Knife, one malachite handle ; two small three- bladed - ditto, one pearl handle, the other ivory ; a lady's small ivory Case, containing Scissors, Thimble, & c., marked ' C. S. P.' re- versed ; six brass gilt Weights, from J lb. to J oz. ; a white ivory double Opera Glass, maker Cam, 24, rue de la Paix, Paris, No. 12 verres; a dark single- breasted Overcoat, two pockets on right and one on left, inside, and a small ticket pocket outside ; a silver Mustard Spoon, crest— Tower and Bird ; and a dark wideawake hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Iremonger, Berks Constabulary, Maidenhead, who will, on the conviction of the offender or , offenders and recovery of the property, pay £ 10 reward.— Bow- street, April 18. Stolen by means of housebreaking, during the night of the 11th instant, at Hartlepool: a pair- ease silver lever Watch, maker William Humphrey, Hartlepool, No. 530 ; a ship's Chronometer, No. 2120, maker's name Hewett and Sou, mahogany case ; a japanned tiu dressing Case, flowered top; a gold Brooch, carbuncle stone ; a topaz Brooch ; a garnet Brooch ; a silver Brooch ; two hair Brace- lets, one of them having a gold clasp ; a jet Brooch ; two lady's gold rings ; s lady's gold Chain, with King, Locket, Seal, Pencil, and Key attached ; a pebble Bracelet; a gent's long gold Guard, repaired in three links with black thread the other brown ; and a red and white Muffler. Stoleu from the person on the race- hill at Brighton, on the 15th instant : an English lever gilt gold Watch, with gold Chain, of long links, and a small Locket in shape of a match- box attached. Information to be given to Chief Constable White, Brighton.— Bow- strett, April 18. Stolen from the person on the Race- hill at Brighton, on the afternoon of the 15th instant : a gold open faced English horizontal Watch, No. 6562, jewelled cylinder. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Brighton. — Bou - street, April 1C. Stolen on the 3rd instant, from the person on the race- course at Warwick : a gold lever Watch, No. 20093, maker Hurt and Wray, Birmingham. £ 5 reward on conviction. Also from the person : a silver Geneva Watch, No. 10698G. Irish poplin Dress, gold and puce mixture, trimmed with puce ; a paisley Shawl; au old grey and brown woollen Plaid, has been washed ; a gent's grey Overcoat, light, faced with drab silk, three outside pockets ; a lady's sable Muff; a child's chinchilla Muff; aud a lady's light grey waterproof Cloak. All have been worn. A reward of £ 5 will be paid on the apprehension aud conviction of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the property, or in proportion to the amount recovered. Information to be given to Head Constable Shiels, Hartlepool, Durham.— Bow- st., April 16. Stolen by means of housebreaking between 6' 45 a. m and 6 30 p. m. on the 8th instant, from a house at Hadsor : an Overcoat, grey mixture, velvet collar, pockets at sides : a black Undercoat ; a paisley Shawl ; a pair of woman's side- spring Boots ; an alpaca Umbrella ; three common Brooches — one jet, one round with specks ( imitation pearls), and one brown with the figures of a woman and child ; a Penknife with two blades ; and a black Waistbaud with white stripes. Information to be given to Inspector Breene, Great Marlow, Bucks.— Bow- st., Aprd 14. During the night of the 9th instant, the saddle room at the residence of George Ward, Esq., Putley House, near Wombourne, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : two suits of black Livery, men's size, with thread loop on left shoulder for epaulet; two pairs of black kid Gloves ; a brown stable Jacket; about £ 2 iu Money : two mat Baskets ; and part of a brown driving Rein, with buckle. Information to be given to Inspector McCrea, Tettenhall, or to Sergeant Rushton, Trysull, near Wolverhampton, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, April 14. About 1 p. m. on the 8th instant, the dwelling- house of Thomas Clayton, of Poynton, near Macclesfield, Cheshire, collier, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a black cloth Jacket, two pockets outside, and black covered buttons ; a grey cloth Jacket, Vest and Trousers ; a pair of boy's light coloured Trousers and Vest; a woman's black stuff Dress ; a pair of woman's black cloth Boots ; two felt Hats, one black, HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen on the 9th or 10th, from a field at Northolt, a chestnut cart Mare, aged, 14 hands high, a little grey on forehead, saddle- marked, long mane and tail, in foal, and in go id condition. Supposed by two men with a horse and cart: one is 26 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, dark pale complexion, and dressed in cord jacket with fustian back, tight- fitting trousers, dark striped cloth trousers ; the other is 26 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, with dark complexion, whiskers, and moustache ; dressed in a dark vritney overcoat and black round felt hat; had the appearance of horse copers. Horse a bay cob ; in old cart, shaft tied with string. — Metropolitan Police, X Di vision, April 18. Stolen on the 11th or 12th instant, from a park at Isle- worth, a bay Cob, 15 handr high, aged, and off fore fetlock enlarged.— Metropolitan Police, T Decision, April 18. Stolen from Llansantffraid, Montgomeryshire, on the night of the 12th instant: a dark brown male Asa, middle size, white hair on back from saddle mark, the property of David Williams, shoemaker. Information to be given to P. C. Jones, Llansantffraid, or at the Deputy Chief Constable's Office, Welchpool, Montgomeryshire.— Bow- street, April 18. Further information respecting the Horse, Cart, and Gears, stolen from a stable at Oldham, on the 9th instant, aud advertised iu the Police Gazette of the 10th iustant: they were all recovered the same day, at Mobberley, Cheshire, and the following is the description of a man who was seen with the Horse aud Cart at Clayton Bridge, near Manchester, at 5 a. m., and is known to be the same person who stole the Horse and Vehicle from Royton on the 30th J anuary last, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fresh com- plexion, and dark brown h^ ir ; dressed in a light round jacket, brown trousers, with black stripe down legs, short leggings, fastened with three or four straps, and black billy- cock hat; had an old- fashioned silver Watch, with steel Guard attached. Information to be given to Chief Con- stable Hodgkinson, Town Hall, Oldham, Lancashire.— Bow- street, April 18. Stolen between 9 p. m. on the 11th, and 6 a. m. on the 12th instant, from a stable in Junction- street, London- road, Manchester : a bay Horse, aged, white face, a little white on the near hind leg, the near hind foot has been hurt, and there are marks of an old sore, on the front of the foot, and stands a little forward on its knees. At the same time there was stoleu a set of boat- horse Harness, or Gears, consisting of bridle, hames, chains, bellybands, & c., nearly new. Informa- tion to be given at the Detective Department, Town Hall, Manchester.— Bow- street, April 16. Stolen from Lilleshall Abbey Farm, on the night of the 10th instaut : a dark bay Mare, about 30 years of age, 15i hands high, in good condition, long mane and tail, one liiud foot white, and a little white on the off fore foot, she has not been worked or shod for years, and has grey hairs about the head. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Richardson, Wellington, or to Sergeant Christie, Newport, Salop.— Bow- street, April 16. Absconded from Toddington, Beds, on the 1st instant, charged with stealing a very dark ( nearly black) bay Mare, aged, 13 hands high, blind of near eye, tail cut short ; be is also charged with stealing at the same time, a Bridle, Saddle, a pair of German silver Spurs, and £ 6 in Money, the pro- perty of Charles Ayres, a horse dealer, his master: ALFRED NAYLOR, about 21 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, little sandy whiskers, and stout built; dressed iu brown sleeved waistcoat, cotton cord trousers ( fitting tight to legs), and rough hairy cap. He talked of going to America, and has friends living at Gressenhall, near East Dereham, Norfolk. Information to be given to Superintendent Shepperd, Police Office, Vi\ » uum, Beds, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, April 10. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Description of ROBERT GEORGE EARL, who has absconded from Portsmouth, charged with stealing Lead from a building : he is about 32 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, brown hair, blue eyes, fresh complexion, stoops slightly from the shoulders ; he is a coach builder, and is believed to have gone to Loudon. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Barber, Portsmouth, Hants, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Boic- street, April 18. Absconded on the 11th instant, from Bernard- street, Rnsssll- square, charged with stealing one £ 10 and three £ 5 Bank of England Notes, one indorsed ' Fowues': a man 21 years of age, 5 feet 10 iuches high, pale complexion, brown hair, and no whiskers or moustache; dressed in dark coat, pockets on hips, aud deerstalker hat. — Metropolitan Police, E Division, April 18. Further information respecting JOHN RICHARD PHILLIPS, a clerk, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 26th March last, who abscouded from Aberpergum, Glyn Neath, on the evening of the 21st ultimo, charged on a warrant with embezzling Money, the monies of his master 9 POLICE GAZETTE. April 18 Morgan Stuart Williams, Esq.: lie is 28 years of age, about 5 feet 4 inches high, pale complexion, dark hair and whiskers, clean shaved chin, rather inclined to be stout, right little finger hoOked, rather near sighted, and is a native of Ystradgunlais, Breconshire; dressed iu a brown cloth overcoat, dark cloth trousers, and black bowler hat. .£ 20 reward will be paid for his apprehension, or for such infor- mation as will lead to a like result. Photographs will be supplied to any Superintendent or Inspector of Police on application. Information to be given to Superintendent Howlett, County Constabulary Office, Neath, Glamorgan. — Bow- street, April 18. Stolen on the night of the ll* h instant, from an out- building, at the Court Farm, in the parish of Gladestree : one sheep Skin, since recovered. By a man aud a woman, the man about 45 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high ; dressed in old cotton cord trousers, white slop, sometimes wears an old dark coat over the slop, old grey cap, or hat, old shoes cut ou sides : the woman about 40 years of age, tall and stout ; dressed in a light dress, aud black bonnet. They sleep in out- buildings. The man has stated that he was formerly a sweep, but is now gathering rags aud bones. Information to be given to Chief Constable Wheeldon, Penybont, or to Police Constable Weale, New Radnor.— Bow- street, April 16 Absconded from Middlesborough on the !) th instant, chargpd with embezzlement : a clerk, 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, sallow complexion, browu eyes, large black whiskers round face, large black moustache, broad face, large features, red scar on right temple, a native of Darling- ton ; dressed iu black cloth shooting coat and vest, striped cloth trousers, dark brown cloth overcoat, dark round hat, and lace- up boots, he left on the 9th instant, and may endeavour to emigrate. lnformatiou to be given to Chief Constable Saggerson, Middlesborough, who holds a warrant, and will pay £ 5 reward, and ail expenses on his apprehension — Bow- street, April 16. Absconded from Stafford on the 5tli instant, charged with stealing a gold Ring, and a pair of woollen plaid Trousers: THOMAS BUTLER, about 36 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, slightly made, pale complexion, black hair, no whiskers or moustache; dressed in brown jacket, light waistcoat, light cord trousers, black billycock hat, old lace- up boots, and puce aud black woollen shirt. He is a shoemaker, has woiked in Worcester, where he is supposed to have gone. Information to be given to Inspector Bowen, Guildhall, Stafford, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- street, April 16. Absconded on the 8th instaut, charged with stealing a £ b Bank of England Note ; £ 5 19s. 6d. in Gold and Silver ; and a Cheque for £ 1 Is., signed by ' M. T. Blackenden,' crossed ' Ellen Taddler.' A woman, 28 years of age, tall, dark complexion, hair, and eyes; dressed iu grey alpaca dress, and black bonnet.— Metropolitan Police, E Division, April 14. Description of WILLIAM ROBINSON, a clerk, lately in the employ of the Cannock and Rugeley Colliery Company, charged with stealing from his employers the sum of £ 210 on the 9th inst. : he is about 26 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches hi<? h, ruddy complexion, black hair, cut short at the back, bushy and rather straight in front, small dark moustache, slight black whiskers, black pointed beard, uneven teeth aud bad colour, very dark bright eyes, and has a slow measured walk. Information to be given to Superintendent Hill, Brownhills, Walsall, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, April 14. Absconded from Middlesbrough on the 9th instant, charged with embezzlement : CHARLES POWELL, a clerk, 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, sallow complexion, brown eyes, large black whiskers round the face, large black moustache, broad face, large features, red scar ou right temple, aud a native of Darlington ; dressed when last seen in black cloth shooting coat and vest, striped cloth trousers, dark brown cloth overcoat, dark round hat, and lace- up boots. Information to be given to Chief Constable Saggerson, Middlesbrough, who holds a warrant for his arrest, and £ 5 reward and all expenses will be paid on his apprehension.— Bow- street, April 14. Absconded on the 19tli ultimo, from the Great Eastern Railway Goods Department, London, charged with felony : JAMES DUNCAN, delivery clerk, 29 years qf age, 5 feet 6 inches high, stout build, dark complextbti, large black whiskers and moustache, and nail of right thumb deformed ; dressed in pepper- and- salt shooting coat and trousers, lace- up boots, and black billycock hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Hedington, Great Eastern Railway, Bishops- gate Station, London, E.— Bow- street, April 14. Absconded from the borough of. Shrewsbury on the 29th ultimo, charged with stealing a silver lever Watch, No- 2683, a silver albeit Guard, Key, and Seal attached : WILLIAM CROOKES, a dogger, 27 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, brown hair, small saudy moustache, florid complexion, a hole in the left cheek from an abscess ; dressed in blue monkey jacket, dark vest, cord trousers, dark cloth cap, and clogs. Information to be given to Head Constable Davies, Shrewsbury, who holds a warrant for his apprehen- sion.— Bow- street, April 14. Absconded from Monmouth about 11 p. m. on the 9th instant, charged with stealing an English lever Watch, single case, maker Griffith, King- street, London, No. 2523, seconds hand deficient, had attached a gold albert Chain, snake pattern, with drop Chain, artificial Half- guinea, and Key, with the name ' John Wild, Monmouth,' upon it: a man about 21 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, light brown hair cut very close behind, a ring tattooed on the third finger of right hand, fair complexion, smart appearance and gait, and rather talkative when in company ; dressed in a dark coat, made jacket fashion, grey vest and trousers, grey cap with peak, and lace- up boots. He enlisted at Monmouth in the 5th Dragoon Guards. Information to bo given to Superin- tendent Wheeldon, Monmouth.— Bow- street, April 14. Stolen from the dwelling- house of Patrick Murray, Market- street, Rngeley, about 4 p. m. on the 6th instaut: a light- coloured Overcoat, velvet collar ; a pair of light tweed Trousers; a Waistcoat; a light- coloured round Jacket ; a large brown Scarf ; a pair of top Boots ; and a light- coloured Scarf. By a man who said he was a native of Shropshire, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, light hair, light complexion, no whiskers or beard ; dressed in an old tweed suit, aud sammy hat'. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Disney, forebridge, Stafford, or to Sergeant Goddard, Police Station, Rugeley, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, April 14. Description of JOHN SHELTON, charged on a warrant with stealing seven Choppers, the property of his masters, Messrs. H. and W. McKellow, at Brighton, in January last, the Choppers haye been reoevered : about 19 years of age, about 6 feet 6 inches high, slight made, light complexion, light hair, slightly inclined to curl, and has a scar on upper lip ; generally dressed in a brown coait, cord trousers, black cap, with peak and fur round the back, or he may be dressed in a black suit, as he is supposed to have taken one with him when he left Brighton. Is likely to be employed at a woodsellers. Information to be given to Chief Constable White, Town Hall, Brighton, Sussex.— Bow- street, A/ yril 10. Stolen during the night of the 8th instant, from a lodging- house, iu Shiffnal, Salop, the property of John Fenney, hawker, of Shrewsbury : a browu rough Jacket, nearly new, two pockets on hips, one inside left breast, one outside l ight breast, pockets lined with dark lining, brown buttons, bluck braid on sleeves; a dark check cotton Shirt; a red cotton Handkevchief, with white spots; a pair of Spectacles and Case; a pedlar's Certificate, granted by Chief Constable Davies, of Salop, to Fenney, endorsed for Staffordshire, Cheshire, Mold, aud Shropshire. By a man, about 21 years of age, about 0 feet 5 inches high, Jight complexion, no whiskers, full face, and hair cut short. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Richardson, Wellington, Salop.— Bow- street, April 10, /, Description of WILLIAM HODGKISS, who is charged with stealing £ 40, the monies of Samuet Nathaniel Cook, a . ladies outfitter, his master : he is 22 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, thin face, dark brown hair, very slight whiskers, pale complexion, of a smart and active appearance ; dressed iu dark long overcoat, and billycock hat. Informa- tion to be given to Chief Superintendent Glossop, Birming- ham, who holds a warrant for his arrest.— Bow- street, Aprils.
