Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE) GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MB. O. %* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor most be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. On the night of the 25th ultimo, the body of Edwin Lambert, game keeper to Edmund Calverly, Esq., of Oulton Hall, near Leeds, was found ou the side of the river Aire, near Lemouroyd Lock, Oulton, with his legs in the water, aud a gun shot wound behind the left ear, shattering the temporal bone, and penetrating the brain, and on the 28th ultimo, an adjourned inquest was held, when a verdict of ' Wilful Murder' was returned against some person or persons unknown. Information to be given at the Superin- tendent's Office, Wakefield, Yorkshire.— Bow- st., March 7. Absconded on the 10th instant, from the parish of New- church East, in the county of Monmouth, charged under a warrant ( with two others committed for trial at the next quarter sessions to be holden at Usk, on the 19th March) with unlawfully and maliciously wounding and inflicting grievous bodily harm upon one William Dixon, on the night of the 8th instant: JOHN LANE, a travelling tinker, he has a pedlar's certificate signed by the Chief Constable of Monmouthshire, in January last, he is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, proportionate figure, light brown hair and whiskers. He is accompanied by his wife, who is lather tall, and of fair complexion. He lias with liim two light coloured mare Donkeys, a new light spring Cart, with yellow body and brown wheels, patent axletree, and brass caps. Supposed a native of Kington, Herefordshire, but has lived at Newchurch East for the last 16 months. Infor- mation to be giveu at the Chief Constable's Oflice, Aber- gavenny ; to Captain Beetlian, Constabulary Office, Usk ; or to Inspector Ward, Chepstow, Monmouth, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow street, February 28. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of William Mayes, at Wood- bridge, on the night of the 24th instant: a silver pair- case Watch, medium size, Roman figures, marked ' Hildyard, Woodbridge, No. 6068,' with a silver Albert aud Key. By a niau about 28 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark hair and complexion, very few whiskers, beetle brow'd, old dark clothes, old rouud hat, boots with the toes out; states he has been iu the navy. Information to be given to the Police at Woodbridge, Suffolk.— Bow- street, February 28. The following Watches were Btolen from persons on the Race Course, Canterbury, ou the 21st instant: A silver pair- cased Watch. A gold hunting Watch, a gold Albert, plaiu, maker Mason, Canterbury. A gold Geneva bunting Watch, open white face, No. 4423, glass cracked iu form of a V in centre. A silver lever, maker Thomson, Ashford. Information to be given to Superintendent Davies, Canterbury, Kent.— Bow- street, February 24. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. During the night of the 4th instant, the saddle- rooms at Stoughton Grange, in the county of Leicester, were broken and entered, and the following property stolen therein : 1 light tweed Coat aud Waistcoat with sleeves, nearly new, buttons stamped ' Boden & Swingler, Leicester.' 2 pairs of black cloth Trousers, oue pair nearly new, buttons ditto. 1 pair of black Bedford cord Trousers, buttons ditto. 1 old black cloth Coat. 1 pair of top Boots, tops torn off. 1 old stable Waistcoat. 1 red, white, and black flannel Shirt. 2 white cotton Shirts. 1 pair of men's elastic- side Boots. 2 pairs of cotton Stockings. 1 black Mackintosh, with light- coloured lining. 1 dark bronze Scarfpin, with boar's head and huntsman's horn round it. 2 plated Scarfpins, one with blue stone in centre. 4 Sovereigns, 7 Half- sovereigns, and £ 1 13s. 9d. in Silver. 1 brown leather Strap, about 4 feet long, with plated buckle. 1 carpet Bag. Supposed by tramps, who are supposed to be wearing the stolen clothes, as an old fustian Coat, Trousers, and Waistcoat were left behind. Information to be given at the County Constabulary Office, Leicester, or to Superintendent Burdett, Aylestone, near Leicester. — Bow- street, March 7. During the night of the 28th ultimo, the dwelling- house of Miss Butler, at Whitley, Reading, was burglariously broken into, and the following property stolen therein : a pair of twilled Sheets, marked ' T. | M. B.' with red cotton ; a cotton Sheet, marked ' E. | T. B.' with blue cotton; two bad Shillings ; aud a light brown leather Purse, with elastic band round it. Information to be given to Superintendent Grant, Berks Constabulary, Beading.— Bow- street, March 3. During the night of the 20th instant, the office of Mr. William Elworthy's brewery, iu Kettering, was broken into, and the following property stolen therein : 1 £ 20 Bank of England Note, No. W | 19 97759. 1 £ 10 ditto, H | 73 44666. 2 £ 5 Notes. About £ 14 in Silver. £ 1 in Gold. A Cheque of Horn and Co., drawn on the Kettering j Branch of the Leicestershire Banking Company, for £ 8 3s., payable to Wm. Elworthy, dated Feb. 17th, 1873. About 12s. in Copper. About £ 3 in new Farthings. 10s. worth of Postage and some Receipt Stamps. A japanned Cash- box. 2 old green cotton Flags. A silver lever hunting Watch, No. 71594. Any person giving such information as will lead to the appre- hension and conviction of the offender or offenders, shall receive £ 20 reward. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Stoker, Police Office, Kettering, Northamptonshire.— Bow- street, February 24. On the night of the 19th or early on the morning of the 20th instant, the Roman Catholic Chapel at Wooton Wawen, near Henley- in- Arden, in the county of Warwick, was broken into, and the following property stolen therein : two small silver Cruets aud Stand; a silver Chalice and Cover, Latin inscription onjbottom of chalice ' Ecclesia SS Maria et Benedicti, Wootton Wawen, A. D., 1871;' a small silver Box and Stand ; aud a plated Drinking Cup Cover. Information to be given to Inspector Harris, fienley- in- Arden, Warwick- shire.— Bow- street, February 24. Leigh, Esq. : a Shropshire Ewe Lamb, pitch marked on the aides with a horse- shoe. £ 5 reward will be paid to any person whe will give such information as shall lead to the apprehen- sion and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Superintendent Rowbottom, Middlewich, or at any of the Cheshire Constabulary Stations. — Brno- street, February 26. Stolen during the night of the 20th instant, from a field at Stapleford Abbotts, the property of Mr. Philip Taylor, farmer : a red roan Horse, about 15 hands high, aged, long rough coat, scar on near side of neck, frequenUy has the gripes. Information to be given to Superintendent Simpson, Police Station, Epping, or to Inspector Robinson, Police Station, Chipping Ongar, Essex.— Bow- street, February 24. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen during the night of the 5th instant, from Harmes, Farm, Lambourne End, the property of Mr. Phillip Taylor, farmer, Stapleford Abbotts : a blue roan Mare, aged, about 15 hands 3 inches high, white star ou forehead. Information to be given to to Superintendent Simpson, Police Station, Epping, Essex.— Bow- street, March 7. Stolen from Posenhall, on the 5th instant : a dark brown hack Horse, about 15 hands high, bang tail, and in good condition ; also Saddle and Bridle; the property of Mr. Edward Acton, of Brocton. A man of the following description was seen riding it away, 30 to 35 years of age, light brown whiskers on chin ; dressed in dark clothes, and high hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Ivins, Bridgnorth, or to Sergeant Thomas, Much Wenlock, Salop. — Bow- street, March 7. Stolen on the night of the 2nd or morning of the 3rd inst., from a field ou the old Ruth- road, two half- bred Ewes, in lamb, marked with two stripes in pitch on the near side. Information to be given to Head Constable Camfield, Rich- mond, Yorkshire..— Bow- street, March 5. Stolen from Bury Green, on the 19th instant: eight Lamb Hogs, of the long wool breed ; and a half- bred Ewe, which is heavy with lamb. Information to be given to Acting Superintendent Hamilton, Ramsey, Hunts.— Bow- street, February 28. Stolen on the night of the 21st instant, from Fryerning, the property of Mr. Foreman : a dark chesnut cart Mare, 8 years old, 13i hands high, thick head, short thick neck, long tail and mane. Supposed by two men of the following description : one 45 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, dark moustache and beard; dressed in brown coat, dark trousers, and wide- awake hat; the other about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 iuches high, dark complexion, dark mous- tache and whiskers ; dressed in a dark coat, wide- awake hat, and long boots, worn outside trousers, and looked like a foreigner. These men are going about the country repre- senting they have a commission to buy horses for the Spanish army. Information to be given to Superintendent Dobson, Springfield, Chelmsford, Essex.— Bow- street, February 26. Stolen on the night of the 17th instant, from Jodrell Hall Park, Twemlow, Cheshire, the property of Egerton LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Absconded from Burton- on- Trent, on the 1st instant, charged with stealing the folio wing articles from his lodgings : a silver double- cased verge Watch, No. 1811 ; a steel albert Chain ; a striped check Shirt; a pair of worsted Socks, a linen Collar ; a cotton pocket Handkerchief; a Penknife ; a felt Hat; two pairs of Leggings, one pair patent leather, and fastens with a spring, the other pair plain leather with buttons ; also a pair of Clogs, with ' M. Bass,' branded on the Boles. JOSEPH WALLENSTEIN, a German, about 32 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, light hair, whiskers, and moustache, shaves chin, broad shoulders ; dressed in cloth jacket, short and loose, cord troaBera, double breasted vest, striped and much worn, white cap, and white tie, same as worn by stablemen, he was employed as a labourer, but is supposed to have been a steward of Merchant Vessels, speaks English with a broken German accent. Information to be given to Superintendent Oswell, Burton- on- Trent, Stafford- shire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 7. Stolen in the City of Rochester, on the 3rd instant, from the house of the Rev. W. Whiston : a blue short Overcoat, a row of buttons down the front, velvet collar, dark alpaca lining ; an old black cloth Overcoat, plaid lining ; a gold and scarlet Table Cover; two brown silk Umbrellas, one large, and the other small, ' Revd. Whiston,' marked inside at the top of the large one; a gentleman's riding Whip, silver mounted, one ferrule. Also stolen from the house of Mr. Parker, St. George's terrace, Rochester, on the 26th ultimo : a six barrel revolver pistol pin Cartridger, breech loader, maker Spencelaigh, Chatham; 12 Shirts, marked ' E. H. Parker'; 6 under Flannels, marked ' E. H. P.' in red ; 2 pairs of ladle's Boots, one pair lace up, the other imitation buttons. By a marine, a servant to Mr. Parker. £ 3 reward will be given on his apprehension, and recovery of the property, and 10s. for the recovery of the revolver. Information to be given Head Constable Radley, City of Rochester, Kent— Bow- st., March 7. Stolen from the Coffee Pot Inn, Tamworth, on the 5th instant : a £ 5 Bank of Englaud Note, and about £ 20 in gold and silver Coin, the property of Charles Beesly, the landlord. By a man who obtained lodgings at the house on the 3rd instant and left on the 5th, and who stated his name was HENRY COOKE, and he came from Mansfield, Not- tinghamshire, 20 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, stout build, brown hair, grey eyes, pale complexion, no whiskers or moustache, has a fish, anchor, and shamrock, also six letters in a ring and several other marks tattooed on back of left hand, of good address and respectable appearance ; dressed in dark coat and trousers, light- coloured vest, hard black billycock hat, and military boots. Information to be given to Inspector Woollaston, Police Station, Tamworth, Stafford- shire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 7. Absconded from Newport, Monmouthshire, on the 27th ultimo, charged with stealing a silver lever Watch, the pro- perty of Joseph Roberts, of the Castle Precincts, and other Watches belonging to different persons : FELIX GUNTET, a travelling watch and clock repairer, about 46 years of age, about 5 feet 10 inches high, dark complexion, slightly pock- pitted, thin make, small whiskers, a German by birth ; dressed in a tweed coat and dark trousers ; well known in the iron and coal works of Monmouthshire and Glamorgan- shire. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Huxtable, Borough Police Office, Newport, Monmouthshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- street, March 5. Stolen from Wm. Ashley : a pair of linen Sheets, with ironmould marks in one corner ; a pair of Blankets ; a pair of Pillow Cases ; a Petticoat or Underskirt, with black stripes lunning downwards, and black flowered border at bottom ; two Towels ; a table Cloth : a plasterer's Trowel, nearly new; and an iron 2- foot Rule. By a bricklayer, 24 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, black hair, daik eyes and complexion, full face, boil marks on back of neck ; his wife often sings in public - houses. Iuformation to be given to Inspector Chapman, Police Station, Watford, Herts. — Bow- street, March 5. Stolen in Chester on the 27th and 28th ultimo : A gold hunting Watch, No. 10154. Supposed by JOHN or JAMES DE SYLVA, or SALVER, paper ruler or book- binder, a native of London, 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark hair, whiskers, and moustache; and KINE or COYNE, accountant, who lodged at the same place also 2 P O L I C E G A Z E T T E. January 31 suspected, 5 feet 8 inches high, light complexion, no whiskers or moustache ; both said to be well known at Phillip's, general stationer, Liverpool. A silver lever Watch, ' J. M. W.' engraved on outer case. Supposed by a man about 23 years of age, dressed in brown top coat and uillycock hat. A gold albert Chain, curb pattern ; a lady's gold neck Chain. A lady's gold neck Chain, broken near swivel, with links united by thread ; a small gold Brooch, with glass. Supposed by a man about 20 years of age, 5 feet 4 iuches high, light hair, parted in centre, light, and slight whiskers; said he was a mechanic and served his apprentieeship with a man in Birmingham, who took out a patent for making boiler rivets; dressed in dark clothes, and had a crystal cased watch in his possession. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Chester.— Bow- street, March 5. Absconded on the 22nd ultimo, charged with stealing two bushels of Wheat at Bishop Caundle : JAMES FOX 25 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fair complexion, light brown hair, aud blue eyes ; dressed in light slop, fustian trousers, and round felt hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Watts, Dorset Constabulary, Sherborne, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 3. Stolen at Chatham : two girl's light Dresses, trimmed with black, a linsey ditto, a Skirt, a Pannier, a child's black cloth Jacket, trimmed with braid, a boy's cloth Vest and Trousers, two pairs of Kid Boots, small size, aud two Muffs. By a man, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, light complexion, small brown whiskers round face ; dressed in light brown shooting coat, ^ trousers of same material, and hard round hat; has a banjo, plays, sings, and dances at public- houses, and carries a black leather bag. Information to be given to Superintendent Coppinger, Kent County Con- stabulary, Chatham.— Bow- street, March 3. Description of a woman who obtained lodgings at the house of Mrs. Seager, No. 5, Carey- street, Maidstone, Kent, on the 26th ultimo, and left at about 12 45 p. m. on the 8th ultimo, stealing and taking with her a pair of kid Boots, two new print Aprons, a cloth Jacket, a slate- coloured alpaca Dress, two Chemises, 5 id. in copper Money, a Nightdress, and a large market Basket : she is about 35 years of age, dark complexion, round fat face; dressed in green plaid dress, shabby, paisley shawl, black lace bonnet, white apron, and lace- up leather boots ; speaks with a Scotch or. Irish accent. She stated that she had left Dover, that she was going to stay in Maidstone for about three months, and that she then intended going to America. Information to be given to Head Constable Gifford, Maidstone, Kent.— Bow- street, March 3. Absconded between 10 a. m. the 21st, and 10 a. m. on the 22nd instant, charged with stealing .£ 15 : a man, 21 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark complexion, blotched face, dark brown hair; dressed in Oxford mixture overcoat, dark trousers, and black felt hat.— Metropolitan Police, E Division, February 28. Absconded from Exeter, charged with embezzlement: RICHARD COOK, late a carter in the employ of the Bristol and Exeter Railway Company : he is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, rather stout; dressed in a monkey jacket, moleskiu trousers and vest, and wide- awake hat. Information to be given to Head Constable Steel, Guildhall, Exeter, Devon, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 28. Stolen from the house of ANDREW HAGAN, Gew- land- street, South Shields, on the 25th instant: a sailor's Bag, containing the following articles of wealing apparel ; a large- sized grey top Coat; a new dark tweed Coat; a blue slack Coat ; four pairs of white duck Trousers ; five pairs of tweed Trousers ; a light grey Yest; a blue Vest, with brass buttons ; eleven woollen Shirts, of various colours, marked ' J. F.;' five pairs of white Drawers, marked ' J. F.;' seven pairs of Stockings, marked ' J. F.;' a pair of elastic- side Boots, with buttons up the front. By a man of the following description, who took lodgings at the above house, and absconded on the following moruing ; 21 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, fair complexion, light moustache, had the appearance of a seaman, aud speaks the Yorkshire dialect. Information to be given to Chief Constable Richardson, South Shields.— Bow- street, February 28. Absconded from Shrewsbury, on the 21st inst., charged on a warrant with embezzling Money of his employer Mr. T. L. D. Jones, auctioneer : FRANK ONIONS, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, light complexion, light brown hair aud whiskers, very slight impediment in his speech ; dressed in a suit of black clothes, light overcoat, billycock hat, aud elastic- side boots". .£ 10 reward will be paid by Mr. T. L. D. Jones, to any person giving such infor- mation as shall lead to his apprehension. Information to be fiven to Head Constable Davies, Shrewsbury.— Bow street, tyrvary 28, Absconded from Dorstone, Herefordshire, on the 29th ultimo, charged with stealing Oats aud oat Chaff: WILLIAM JONES, alias BILL OF WINDSOR, a shoe- maker, and native of Dorstone, about 45 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark hair, pale face, generally shaves all his whiskers off ; he left his wife at Dorstone, has a relative living in Bristol, supposed to be keeping a shop, another at Salisbury, Wilts, another at Tredegar, and another at Aber- gavenny, keeping a public- house, he is supposed to have gone to one of these places. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Shead, Weobley, or to Sergeant Baynham, Consta- bulary Station, Whitney, Herefordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 28. Description of —- MARTIN, for whose apprehension a warrant has been issued, charging him with stealing at Ullesthorpe, Leicestershire, on the 21st ultimo : a quantity of Potatoes : he is 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, proportionately made, light hair and complexion, no whiskers or moustache, has tattoo marks on left hand, in a ring the letters ' U. W. C. T. T.,' alse ou same hand the word ' Martin,' other tattoo marks are on his left hand, arm, and chest ; is of good address, and respectable appearance ; dressed in black cloth coat and trousers, white vest, and cap with a tassel ; he stated that he was a native of Nottingham, and had been in the army. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Rowlett, Lutteworth, Leicestershire.— Bow- street, February 28. Description of HENRY LAWS, alias MORLEY, who absconded on the 23rd instant from St. Leonards, charged on a warrant with obtaining a quantity of Meat by false and fraudulent pretences, the property of his master, Mr. Albert Parks : about 46 yeais of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, propor- tionate make, rather dark complexion, dark hair and whiskers, Bhaved on chin ; had on when he left, a brown overcoat and high hat, but generally dresses as a butcher ; had with him a small carpet- bag and a sea chest with rope handles ; has been employed as a butcher ( his trade) on board ship; he left by the 6' 50 a. m. train the same day for Brighton, and is a native of Bornemouth, Hants. Informa- tion to be given to Chief Superintendent Glenister, Town Hall, Hastings, Sussex.— Bow- street, February 28. Stolen on the 25th instant, from the house of George Marshall, The Balk- road, Bedford : a silver Geneva Watch, No. 30779— 23882, enamel dial, with gilt flowers round the edge. By a man, about 24 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high ; dressed in black coat and trousers, and deerstalker hat. Information to be given to Chief Constable Verey, Borough Police Office, Bedford.— Bow- street, February 28. Further information respecting CHARLES ACTON BURROWS, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 31st ult. ,£ 20 reward will be paid to any person or persons who may give such information as may lead to his apprension. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Dance, Police Court, Tonbridge, Kent.— Bow- street, February 26. Description, of KATE HARRISON, cbai^ d at Skipton with stealing, from a dwelling- house at Silsden, certain articles of female Dress ( recovered), on the 30th ultimo, and for whose apprehension a warrant has been issued : about 44 years of age, about 4 feet 10 inches high, brown hair, medium build, a native of Ireland, a tramp, and has no fixed residence ; dressed in old grey shawl, green and white plaid dress, and clogs ; she is reported to be well known at Man- chester, Liverpool, Rochdale, Bishop Auckland, and other northern towns. She was accompanied by a girl, about 7 years of age, and by a man, named James Harrison, about 34 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair, and is a gasmaker by trade ; dressgd in old black cloth coat, linen jacket, white moleskin vest, nearly new, • otton cord trousers, and navvy boots, much worn. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Sykes, West Riding Constabulary, Skipton.— Bow- street, February 26.
