POLICE GAZETTE M autfcontg. CONTAINING The iubiUAte of all Informations received in eases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 5313 FRIDAY, JANUARY 31, 1873. IVotlce.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MB. W. D. BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for tho insertion of any article ia the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor mast be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. At 3 a. m. on the 18th iustaut, Police Constable George Grey, of the Northumberland Constabulary, was passing along the highway west of Eglingham Village, he met three meu, who jumped over the fence into a field, aud the officer followed them; two of the men turned round, and each pointed a gun at him, one of them fired, and wounded the officer in the body, from which wounds he died the same day. One of the men is about 5 feet 11 inches high ; the man who fired the gun is about 5 feet 8 inches high, wore a grey coat aud raoleskiu trousers; and the third a shorter man. Her Majesty's Government offer a reward of £ 100 to any person who shall give such information and evidence, as shall lead to the discovery aud conviction of the murderer or murderers, and the Right Hon. the Secretary of State for the Home Department, will advise the graut of Her Majesty's nracious pardon to any accomplice, not being the person who actually committed the murder, who shall givo such evidence as shall lead to a like result. Information to be given to the Chief Constable of Northumberland, Hexham, or to any Superintendent in the county of Northumberland.— Bow- street, January 27. was entered, and stolen therein : four £ 5 Bank of England Notes, which bore four of the following Nos. and dates— 81260, 81261, Oct. 31st, 1872, 19051, 19052, 19053, 19054, Nov. 15th, 1872; £ 9 10s. in Gold; 33. in Copper; eleven gilt Lockets ; a number of gilt Brooches : six silver Tea Spoons, marked ' W. S. P. ;' a silver Mustard Pot, marked ' W. S. P.' aud a masonic engraving ; 12 yards of black, blue, scarlet, and green Velvet, in pieces of various lengths ; a silk Pocket- handkerchief; 3 lbs. of green Tea ; and 2 lbs. of Tobacco. Information to be given to Superintendent Poole, Wellingborough, Northamptonshire.— Bow- street, January 27. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Chatham, on the morning of the 25th instant: about three dozen Knives and Forks, half- a- dozen small and half- a- dozen large, and three carving knives and forks have white handles aud marked ' John Bryan, best steel warranted,' the remainder have black handles, and about half- a- dozen marked ' Winch ;' the others marked ' Wade, Wingfield and Rowbotham.' Information to be given to Superintendent Coppinger, Police Station, Chatham, Kent.— Bow- street, January 27. Between 1 and 3 a. m. on the 26th instant, the shop of Mr. John Hatton, Uffington, Berks, was broken and entered, and 1 Is. iu Silver and 2s. in Copper Money stolen therein, anil Stolen from a meadow at the ' Home for little Boys,' Horton Kirby, near Farningham, on the 11th instant: aix Teg Sheep, of the Scotch breed, with horns aud loDg tails. Information to be given to [ Superintendent Fread, Police Station, Dartford, Kent— Bow- ttreet, January 27. On the night of the 3rd instant, twenty- one half- bred Hogs, belonging to Mr. Joseph Dixon, were stolen from a field on the Hutton Roof Hall Farm, in the county of West- morland : the sheep were sold on the 6th instant, at Edmont Bridge, Westmorlaud, by JAMES ROUTLEDGE, alias JAMES TROUGHTON, a native of Cartmel Fell, Lan- cashire, a farm servant, 26 years of age ( looks older), 5 feet 9 inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair, thin sandy whiskers meeting under chin, blue eyes, slightly bow- legged, broad shoulders, proportionate make, and turns his toes in- wards; dressed in light brown woollen overcoat, fitting tight, brown woollen trousers, browu leather leggings, strong watertight boots, and grey billycock hat. He may endeavour to enlist in some regiment or emigrate. Information to be given at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle, Cumberland, or to Superintendent Bird, Constabulary Office, Kendal, Westmorland.— Bow- street, January 27. Found, ( supposed to have been stolen,) at Atherstone, on a large quantity of men's ready- made Clothes and women's the evening of the 21st instant : an aged grizzley- coloured Dresses were tied up for removal. By two men.- one is about mare Donkey, in good coudition, without shoes, with white 5 feet 10 inches high, vtry red hair, beard, and moustache ;' legs, belly aud nose. Information to be given to Inspector dressed iu a dark pilot cloth monkey jacket and dark trousers; the other was short and stout; dressed in cord jacket, dark trousers, and soft black felt hat. They were disturbed by Mr. H. Gadd while tying up the property, whom they violently assaulted by striking him on the nead and attempted to cut his throat. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. At 2 p. m. on the 27th instant, the cottage of Joseph Croft, labourer, of Rhosgoch, on the Long Mountain, uear Welshpool, was broken into, and stolen therein : £ 5 in Gold; two Florins ; a copper 2d. Piece ; a brown velvet Jacket, much worn ; a dark cloth Waistcoat, having square green spots in it, nearly new ; a pair of cotton cord Trousers, lately washed, each knee patched ; a pair of grey woollen Stockings ; and a black jimcrow Hat. By a tramp, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 iuches high, little or no whiskers; dressed in the stolen clothes ; be left behiud in the cottage an old blue pilot cloth monkey jacket, lined with blue and black woollen plaid, and an old white jimcrow hat, turning up at the sides, with tape to it to wear under the chin. The Bishop's Palace, at Ripton, was broken aud entered during the night of the 22nd instant, and stolen therein : a large silver Inkstand, with inscription upon it ' Presented to the Rev. R. Bickersteth, M. A., by the Members of his congregation in St. John's Church, Clapham Rise ;' a smaller silver Inkstand, oval shape, and taper holder in centre; a pail' of silver Candlesticks, marked ' J. H. B.' ; a silver Trowel, with an inscription upon it ' Piesented to the Right Rev. Robert, Lord Bishop of ripon, oil laying the foundation of the Church at Hough End, Bramley', leather case for same; a black leather hand Bag, partly worn ; a silver Bouquet Holder, with Chain attached ; some Postage Stamps; and 2d. in Copper. Supposed by tramps. £ 20 reward will be paid on conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the property. During the night of the 23rd instant, the dwelling- house of William Perry, of Irthlingborough, grocer and draper, LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Power, of Nuneaton : a dark trown half- bred Mare, 15| hands high, aged, white star on forehead, near hind Description of two men who at 5 30 p. m. on the 18tli ins., 1 fetlock white, white round off fore aud hind hoofs, and a few entered the house of H. Everhard Esq., Ladbrook Hall, by white spots ou the n? ar side. Information to be given to means of placing a ladder at au open upstairs window ; one Superintendent Austin, Nuneaton, Warwickshire.— Bow- about 40 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, with a dark street, January 22. moustache ; dressed in dark overcoat, round hard bowler hat, and elastic- side boots. The other about 30 years of age, — 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, full face; dressed in pilot cloth coat, soft billycock hat, and white scarf round his neck : both of. gentlemanly appearance. Stolen between 2 and 3 p. m. on the 28th instant, from tor Walker, Southam, Warwickshire.— Bow- street, January 22. the Railway Station, at Braithwaite, the property of Richard Clapham, station master : a £ 5 Bauk of England Note ( since Further information respecting the burglary at the recovered). By a man aud woman, the mau is from 26 to 28 residence of W. H. Leatham, J P., at Hemsworth, iu the yeara 0f age, 5 feet 10 inches high, short dark whiskers, and West Riding of Yorkshire, advertized in the Police Gazette slender figure ; dressed iu black coat and trousers, seat torn, of the 11th instant. A reward of £ 100 will be paid for uack cap, new boots, with buttons on front, and a belt round information ( private or otherwise) that will lead to the appre- waist. The womau is a prostitute, and belongs to hension aud conviction of the offender or offenders, aud Caldewgate, Carlisle, 20 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, recovery of the property, or £ 50 will be paid on the con- fresH complexion, short nose, thick lips, dark hair, and pro- vision of the offender or offenders, without recovery of the portionate figure ; dressed in a black hat, with red or pink property. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen from a stable at Gwastod- garth Llanelly, Brecon- shire, on the night of the 25th instant : a strawberry grey mare Pony, 5 years old, about 13 hands high, saddle mark on left side, tail cropped, lately shod, steeled, aud roughed. A man having the appearance of a low horse jockey is suspected: dressed iu an old brown overcoat, and billycock hat. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Evans, Breconshire Constabulary, Crickhowell.— Bow- street, January 29. Between the 8th and 22nd instant, a horned wether Sheep, the property of Mr. Charles Pratt, of Beech Farm, Old Windsor, was slaughtered in a plantation, aud the carcase carried off, the head aud skin being left belimd. £ 5 reward will be paid by Mr. Pratt to any person giving information that will lead to the apprehension aud conviction of the offender or offenders. Inform ition to be given to Mr. Pratt, Sunninghill, or to Inspector Mansell, Clewer, Berks.— Bow- street, January 29. Stolen from a field at Nuneaton, during the night of the 22nd instant, the property of Mr. Charles Jee : a fine bay hidf- bred Gelding, 5 years old, 16 hands high, long mane aud tail, black fetlocks, unshod, iu good condition, has a very small white star on forehead, and dark fetlocks ; it is supposed to have been stolen at 7 p. m., and lias been traced as far as Atherstone. A reward of £ lb will be paid upon conviction of the offender or offenders. Description of JOHN LANK, name supposed to be fictitious, charged with stealing on the 25th instant, from his lodgings at Swadlincote, £ 25 in Gold aud Silver, the property of William Fearn : he is about 24 years of age, 5 feet 4 iuches high, stout built, black curly hair, cut short, no whiskers, coarse face, thick lips, dark complexion, rough voice, aud has the appearance of a pugilist; dressed when last seen in blue guernsey, cotton cord trousers, and hard billycock hat ; he is supposed to be a native of Birmingham, occasionally works as a mechanic, but often travels with shooting galleries, ginger- bread stalls, and boxing- booths to fairs and races, and ? s kuown as LANK JACK. Information to be given to Superintendent Carline, Police Office, Woodville, near Burton- on- Trent, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- street, January 31. Absconded from Weymouth, on the 27th instant., charged with larceny as a bailee: JEAN MARIA ANDERSON, alias TRUTCH, alias TRACEY, alias TREVELLIAN, alias the Hon. Mrs. H. H. TREHERNE, alias TRENCH, TULLOCK, & c. ( supposed to have been convicted at Ipswich, Bedford, Scarborough, Cheltenham, Exeter, Nottingham, and other places) ; she is about 53 years of age, 5 feet 3 iuches high, pale thin features, blue eyes, dark hair ( false), sallow complexion, very insinuating manner, well educated, walks quickly, aud rather stiff in oue leg; dressed iu black, carrying a brown waterproof cloak, brown silk umbrella with a gold plate in the shape of a heart ou the knob, and wearing a hat with a thick veil. She obtains respectable lodgings by the quarter, promising payment every six weeks ; she then orders a quantity of goods from various tradesmen, making numerous 2 P O L I C E G A Z E T T E. January 31 promises and excuses for nonpayment. Before absconding she obtained Jewellery, false flair, false Teeth, all kinds of Clothing, Groceries, Wines, Coals, & e. ; she left Dorchester oa the 27tli instant, by the 4 55 p. m. train for Yeovil, where she pawned a set of false teeth for .£ 1, iu the name of Ellen Garduer, aud left at mid- day on the 28th instant, by either the Great Western or South Western Railway ; she then had with her a brown paper parcel, about 2 feet long. A photo- graph of her cau be obtained on application. Information to be given to Superintendent Vickery, Police Office, Weymouth, Dorsetshire, who holds a warrant for her apprehension.— Bow- street, January 31. Description of THOMAS EARP, charged on a warrant with larceny as a bailee : about 24 ye^ rs of age, 4 feet 4 inches high, fair complexion, full face, brown hair, slight whiskers and moustache, is mueh deformed in left hip, aud is very lame ; he carries a short stick in his right haud, and rests his left hand ou his hip ; is well dressed, and wears a gold watoh with gold curb pattern chaiu, also a gold ring on little finger of right baud ; he is a watch jeweller, and will probably seek employment as such. Information to be given to Chief Con stable Norris, Police Office, Coventry,— Boui- street, Jan. 31. Stolen from the Seven Stars Inn, Bilston, ou the 24th instant: a blue melton Coat; two ditto Vests, double breasted ; a pair of light cloth Trousers, dark stripes ; a pair of dark cloth Trousers, with light stripe. Also on the 25th instant, from the Union Inn, Stafford : a dark brown Jacket, two pockets outside, and one inside left breast, lined with red flannel; a black cloth single- breasted Waistcoat ; a pair of shepherd's plaid Trousers ; and a blue silk Necktie. By a man and woman who slept at the houses on the previous night : the man is about 25 years of ago, 5 feet 9 inches high, slight build, dark brown hair, slight moustache, no whiskers; dressed in a black alpine hat, dark brown overcoat, with brown velvet collar, black velvet waistcoat, dark trousers, and blucher boots; the woman is about 19 years of age, 5 feet high, very much pockpitted ; dressed in a dark brown jacket and dress, black hat with white feather in front. In- formation to be given to Chief Constable Congreve, Stafford, or to Chief Superintendent McCrea, Police Office, Bilston, Staffordshire.— Bow- street^ January 29. A warrant has been grauted for the apprehension of CHARLES ACTON BURROWS, late of Lamberhurst, charged with having ou the 17th instant, embezzled the sum of £ 2 lis. 2d., belonging to Mr. Thomas Boorman Lansdell: he is about 20 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, pale com- plexion, light brown hair, cut short, no whiskers or moustache, red pimples on face and back of ueck, rather long nose, carries his head a little forward when walking ; generally dressed in a dark or black oxford suit ; he is a corn and manure merchant, is well known in London and neighbourhood, and has friends living at Ledbury, Hereford- shire. Information to be given to Superintendent Dance, Police Office, Tonbridge, Kent, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- stieet, January 29. Absconded from Shrewsbury, charged on a warrant with embezzlement: HENRY WEATHERBY, an accountant, lat< 4 Secretary to the Shrewsbury Permanent Mutual Benefit Building P.-. iety, 35 years of age, 5 feet 5 iuches high, sallow complexion, hazel eyes, dark browu hair, whiskers, aud moustache, full face, very stout, and jaundiced; dressed when he left Shrewsbury in a brown overcoat, with velvet collar. £ 5 reward is offersd for his apprehension. Informa- tion to bo giveu to Head Constable Davies, Shrewsbury.— Bow- street, January 29. Further particulars respecting GEORGE WILSON, charged with stealiug £ 100, the mouies of the London, Chatham, aud Dover Railway, and described in the Police Gazette of the 13th instant : he was formerly employed as clerk at Shrewsbury and Weymouth, and has a porter at Brighton ; has been previously convicted of a similar offence, and sentenced to 0 months' imprisonment at Ruthin. He is a great billiard player, and will probably be found in com- pany with loose women, he is a native of Yoxford, Suffolk. Information to be given to Superintendent Sanders, Dover, or to Inspector Moores, London, Chatham, and Dover Rail- way, Victoria Station.— Bow- street, January 27. Stolen at Basingstoke, on the 23rd instant : a black cloth Coat, with inside breast pocket, and two pockets in skirt behind, cut away in front; also 2J yards of Scotch Plaid. By a man, between 20 and 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, sandy hair, cut rather short and inclined to curl behind, fair complexion, bushy whiskers, aud slight moustache; dressed iu loug black cloth coat, dark vest and trousers, half- Wellington boots, and a hard felt hat ; he stated he was a carpet fitter and paper hauger, at work iu the neigh- bourhood, which was found to be false. Information to be given to Head Constable Hibberd, Basingstoke, Hants.— Bow- street, January 27. Absconded from Hingham ou the 23rd instant ' ALFRED BARTRAM, of Hingham, carter, & c. to Mr. Philip Haward, wine merchant, & c., charged with haviug on the 23rd November last embezzled £ 5 : he is 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 iuches high, active and well made, pale com- Elexion, dark browu hair and small whiskers extending under is chin, high cheek bones, rather small nose, and lost an upper tooth, supposed on the right side ; is of good address, and when talking his eyes work towards his nose, showing much white of the eyes ; is secretary to an Agricultural Labourers' Union, which he is likely to talk about; dressed in light beaverteen frock, sometimes a blue pilot jacket, and when travelling has a blue rough overcoat, aud black chummy hat. His son, about 12 years of age, left home with him. It is supposed that they will go to Ameria. Information to be gven to Superintendent Barrett, Wymondham, Norfolk, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, Jan. 27. Description of MARY GARDNER, alias MARY ANN LOTT, charged with stealing a quautity of wearing Apparel, on the 22ud inst., the property of her master, Jacob Cohen' pawnbroker, Devonport : she is about 22 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, fresh complexion, light hair, and scar ou right side of neck ; dressed in a black silk frock, trimmed with freen fringe, black silk jacket, black lace bonnet with yellow ewers, and wears a pair of long ear- drops. She is supposed to be iu the company of a soldier of the 2nd Queen's Foot, who has deserted : he is about 22 years of age, 5 feet inches high, fair complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair; he is a native of Bishop Stortford. information to be given to the Head Constable, Devonport Police, who holds a warrant for her apprehension.— Bow- street, January 27. Description of AARON RIDDIFORD, late assistant overseer of the Poor of the Parish of Birmingham, charged with embezzling between the 13th and 18th instant, the sum of £ 400, the money of the Guardians of the Poor : 45 years of age, 6 feet 1 inch high, brown hair, turning grey, carries his head rather forward, proportionate build, grey whiskers ( may be shaved off). He has been in the Gloucestershire ind Berkshire Constibulary, and was Superintendent of Police at Farringdon, aud has also been a Constable in the Birmingham Police Force. luformation to be giveu to Chief Constable Glossop, Police Office, Birmingham, who holds a waarant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, January 27. Description of HENRY LATIN FOWLER, alias HENRY BESSANT, staymaker, who absconded from Worcester, ou the 12th instant, charged with larceny, and for whose apprehension a warrant has been issued : about 34 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, fresh complexion, red blotches on face, full dark hazel eyes, brown hair, moustache, and whiskers, and of gentlemanly appearance ; generally dressed iu brown overcoat, with silk velvet collar, dark reefing jacket, dark vest and trousers, and high hat; he has served in the Army as a bandsman, aud formerly lived at Portsmouth. May be found working at some stay manufactory. Information to be given to the Woroester City Police.— Bow- street, January 24, Stolen from Flint, on the 21st instant: toll stonemason's Chisels and a Mallet, some of the chisels are stamped ' S. B.', and some ' S. Brierly.' Description of convicts on license, [ who have failed to report themselves to the Bristol Police, as required under section 8 of the Prevention of Crimes Act: HENRY HARDY, Register No. 6519, is 28 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, fresh complexion, browu hair, left eye hazel ( lost right), lost first aud second fingers of left hand, little finger of right hand, and one tooth from upper jaw. Was convicted aDd sentenced to seven years' penal servitude at Wells Assizes on the 3rd August, 1866, for burglary and violent assault on the police; lie was discharged from Port- laud Convict Prison, September, 1872. JOSEPH PARKER, alias Sl'ARKS, alias MARKS, Register No. M 5113, is 31 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, dark hair, face, and eyes, and cut on forehead aud upper lip. He was convicted for larceny at Beading on the 2nd July last, and sentenced to six months' imprisonment and seven years'police supervision; was twice previously convicted of felony; he was liberated from Reading Gaol on the 1st instant. EDWARD LAWRENCE, alias BENJAMIN LAW- RENCE, Register No. L 1785, is 33 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, black hair, brown eyes, fresh complexiou, letter ' D ' on left side, scars on each arm, and ruptured right side. Was convicted of larceny at Usk on the 30th Jan., 1872, and sentenced to twelve mouths' imprisonment and two years' police supervision ; he was discharged from Usk Gaol on the 2nd instant. THOMAS KNOX, Registsr No. K 987, is 41 years of age, 5 feet 6{ iuches high, dark brown hair, hazel eyes, swarthy complexion, and culs ou face and left eyebrow. Was convicted for larceny at Dorchester, 2ud of January, 1872, sentenced to twelvo months' imprisonment and five years' police supervision; he was liberated from Dorchester Gaol, on the 1st instant. MARK HOLDER, Register No. II 6639, is 26 years of age, 5 feet 1 i iuches high, dark brown hair, light brown eyes, fresh complexion, large prominent features, scar over right eye, three white marks left side, and when last Been in Bristol had no whiskers or moustache. Was convicted at Gloucester for larceny, 21st March, 1872, sentenced to six months' im- prisonment and two years' police supervision ; he was discharged 20th September, 1872, and is wanted at the Central Police Station on a charge of felony. He went ou board the ' Duke of Sutherland' steamer at North Wall, Dublin, at 7 30 p. m. on the 31st ultimo, en route for Portsmouth, via London, to join his ship ; he had a third- cla6s ticket to London, and his luggage was found unclaimed at Euston Station on the following morning.
