It is roquested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may bo addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Poll Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot bo published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY " WOUNDING-. Description of ISAAC FAWKNER, late of Maccles- field, Cheshire, a hawker of earthenware, ou a visit to a Wm. Ward, of Holbeck, a brickmaker, whose house he left for a walk about 10' 30 am. on the 20th ultimo, and was found drowned at 5.20 a. m. on the 1st instant, in the Air and Calder Canal, at Woodlesford : an inquest has been held, and a verdict of ' Murdered by some person or persons unknown' returned. He is 55 years of age, about 5 feet 9 inches long, brown hair ( turning grey) and moustache ; dressed in drab cloth trousers, with small black stripe, and a pair of dark tweed trousers underneath, puce and yellow striped woollen shirt, a white cotton one underneath, white front and collar, black silk necktie, grey worsted stockings, and elastic- side boots, with four buttons. Information to be given to Super- intendent Hall, Constabulary Office, Wakefield, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, October 7. Description of BOBERT GILMOUR, charged with murder, committed at or near Shotts, iu the parish of Shotts, and county of Lanark, on the night of the 1st, or morning of the 2nd instant: he was in the employment of the Caledonian Railway Company, as Inspector of Permanent Way, at Shotts, 32 to 35 years of age, 6 feet 3 inches high, strong, broad, and straight build, brown curly hair, round reddish face, whiskers round face, and well back on cheeks; dressed iu blue pilot cloth jacket, and vest, blue cap. Is well known throughout Scotland, in connection with the making of railways, having in many places acted as ganger over navvies to Mr. Waddell, Railway Contractor. Is well known in Edinburgh and Glasgow, and over the whole Caledonian System, to servants of all the departments, as he has been in that Railway's employment for a considerable time. Information to be given to James Alston Dykes, Esq., Procurator- Fiscal, or Chief Constable Mackay, Hamilton, Lanarkshire — Bow- street, October 7. FORGERY. Description of GEO. WILSON, a native of Bayswater, charged on a warrant with forgery : 20 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, slight build, pale complexion, no whiskers, small black moustache ; dressed in black frock coat, trousers, and vest, dark brown billycock hat, and Wellington boots; smokes a briar pipe, with amber mouthpiece ; he is generally employed by quack doctors, posting small bills about the Country, headed ' Confidential' aud was recently working for Mr. Smith, a Botanist, of 14, Merchant- street, Bristol, as a bill poster. Information to be given to Superintendent Denson, Aylesbury, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. Bow- street, October 11. ROBBERYtAND LARCENY FROM Stolen from the person of a gentleman at Cambridge : a gold single- cased English lever Watch, maker Benson, London, No. 47491, plated Chain attached. £ 3 reward will be paid on conviction of the offender or offenders and restoration of the watch. Information to be given to Head Constable Turrall, Borough Police Office, Cambridge.— Bow- slreet, October 18. Stolen on the 7th instant, from a gentleman in Ciren- cester Hiring Fair: a gold consular lever Watch, 10 or 12 size, gold dial, seconds hands, maker F. Goodrich, Cricklade, No. 16746. Information to be given to Superintendent Wood, Constabulary Office, Cirencester, Gloucestershire.— Bow- street, October 11. Stolen from the person in Leicester, on the 3rd instant : a gold Geneva Watch, No. 52206, gold Albert attached, long flat link pattern ; a silver lever Watch, with blue circle and ' C. M., 1862 ' on outside case ; and a silver Geneva Watch, No. 8415. Information to be given to Chief Constable Farndale, Town Hall, Leicester.— Bow- street, October 7. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. During the night of the 14th instant, the unoccupied furnished house of Mr. Waterworth, No. 5, West- buildings, Worthing, was broken into, and the following property stolen therein: seven Blankets, some marked ' B.:' five Counter- panes, some marked 1 Gooderich two Table Cloths, one red and black, the other red and drab colour ; and a feather Pillow. Information to be given to Superintendent Hender- son, West Sussex Constabulary, Worthing. — Bow- sireet, October 18. Stolen at Winton on the 14th instant, by means of housebreaking : a Half- crown ; two Sixpences, with hole on edges ; a Sixpeuce with the letters ' A. B.' on one side, and ' W.' on the other ; and a Four- penny- piece, with two holes on the edge. Information to be given to Superintendent Parks, Appleby, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle.— Bow- street, October 16. Between 10 p. m. on the 11th and 6 a. m. on the 12th iustant, No. 3, Clifton- villas, Slough, was burglariously entered, and the following articles, the property of Mrs. P. P. Doyen, stolen therein : six plated Dessert Knives and Forks, with ivory handles; a handsome red Smelling- bottle, with gold top ; a pail of plated Snuffers; a Cruet Stand with seven holders ; three silver Tops to same ; a silver Mustard Spoon, crest— a falcon or eagle with open wiugs; a small Ivory Weather- glass; a damask Tablecloth, marked ' P. P. Doyer,' in iuk ; two silver Thimbles ; and two pairs of small Scissors. Information to be given to Superintendent Dunham, Police Court, Slough, Bucks.— Bow- street, October 14. Between 12 midnight and 2 a. m. on the 6th instant, the vicarage at Arthington, near Otley, was burglariously entered, and the following articles, the property of the Rev. John Hey, stolen therein : a light brown leather Purse, with elastic band round, containing a £ 5 Bank of England Note ; £ 3 in Gold ; and £ 2 in Silver and Copper ; a small silver tea Spoon, marked ' K.;' a silver fish Carver, with embossed handle, and small fishes engraved on the blade; and a silver Fork to match. Information to be given to Superintendent Croft, West Riding Constabulary, Otley. — Bow- street, October 9. Between 6 aud 9 p. m. on the 29th ultimo, the house of Caleb Wm. Roberts, of the Delph, Brierley Hill, was broken aud entered, and the following articles stolen therein : a silver Geneva Watch, with the word ' Geneva' written on face, No. 45715 ; a silver verge Watch, with double case, engine- turned, star and garter on centre of case, No. 5004 ; a gold Locket, with portrait inside; a set of gold Ear- rings, set with cameo, and droppers attached ; a pair of Scales for weighing gold ; a seven- barrelled Revolver, with two barrels burst; a silver Match- box ; and a Purse containing 3s. or 4s. Also, between 6' 30 and 8 p. m. on the 6th instant, the house of the Rev. Josiah Stone, of Brierley Hill, in the county of Stafford, was broken and entered, and the following articles stolen therein : a pair of silver Sugar Tongs ; a gold mourning Brooch, set with pearls, and hair enclosed in back; and two silver- plated cruet- stand Tops. At about 7' 45 p. m. two men of the following description were seen to leave the premises and go in the direction of Stour- bridge : both of high stature, dressed in long dark cloth overcoats and top hats, and of genteel appearance ; one of them is supposed to have injured his hand, blood- stains being on a door- case in the house which wa? forced open, and also on a jemmy which was left behind. Information to be given to Superintendent Mills, Police Office, Brierley Hill, Stafford- shire.— Bow- street, October 9. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING Further description of the Horse and Cart stolen from a stable and cart- shed in the borough of Hertford, on the night of the 1st or morning of the 2nd instant, and advertised in the Police Gazette on the 4th : the horse was in good con- dition, had two lumps on the backbone about the size of a large acorn, and had a very switch tail; the cart had a hole in centre, with brass screw or socket let in flush with the bottom of the cart for an umbrella stick, and the paint much worn ( but, if repainted, can be identified) ; the chaise cover was marked ' Hole.' £ 15 reward and all reasonable expenses will be paid on recovery of the above, or in proportion to the amount recovered, and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Head Constable Jarrett, Borough Police, Hertford.— Boic- street, October 18. Stolen from a field at Wistaston, Cheshire, during the night of the 10th instant: a brown Filly, nearly thorough bred, about 15£ hands high, 3 yeais old, aud has one white hind foot : also a half bred bay Horse, 8 years old, about 15 hands high, has some white spots ou the back, and a mark on the throat in the form of a V, the property of Mrs. Hill, of Wistaston. Iuformation to be given to Superintendent Laxton, Nantwich, or to Inspector Morris, Crewe, Cheshire. -- Bow- street, October 16. Stolen from Fobbing, on the 14th instant: a dark brown nag Mare, 10 years old, about 15 hands high, white face, hind legs white as far as the hocks, has a wart on the tip of each hock, a little hair chafed off the withers, and inside of both fetlocks. Information to be given at the Constabulary Office, Brentwood, Essex.— Bov>- street, October 16. Stolen from a field on the night of the 8th instant, in the township of Stokesley : a small roan entire Pony, aged, about 10 or 11 hands high, black thick bushy mane, and long tail, walks very wide behind, legs crooked, and spavin on each hind leg. Information to be given to Superintendent Simpson, Constabulary Office, or to Sergeant Holmes, Constabulary Office, Stokesley, York.— Bow- street, October 14. Description of GEORGE MANNS, who has ? - conded . from Wimborne Minster, charged with stealing a Horse and Cart, which have been recovered ; he is about 35 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, rather stout figure, fresh complexion, light hair, inclined to be sandy, whiskers shaved off, bald on the top of head, holes in his ears, and may have rings in them, tattooed on both arms and round one of his fingers on the right hand iu the shape of a ring, right leg shorter than the left, walks lame and on one side ; dressed, when he absconded, in a grey coat, dark trousers and waistcoat, and cloth cap with peak. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Con- stable Hammond, Dorset Constabulary, Wimborne.— Boio- street, October 14. A warrant has been granted against two men of the following description, charged with stealing a Donkey, from Llanuwchllyn, in the county of Merioneth, on the night of the 3rd instant, the property of Edward Roberts, shopkeeper, and now recovered sold at Nantyr, luear Llangollen. By JAMES HARRIS, alias IRISH JIM, alias IRISH BOB, about 45 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, small thin features, sallow complexion, dark hair and whiskers, small hazel eyes, supposed to be weak and running, one of his toes turning" inward when walking ; dressed in new cloth cap, 1 leather peak and strap iu front, dark pilot cloth monkey jacket, cord trousers, lately washed, strong boots, with big nails : and GEORGE WATSON, alias BIG HEAD, about 45 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, light hair and whiskers, turniug grey ; dressed iu black wideawake hat, dark coat, cord trousers ; both are in the habit of camping on road- sides, making fancy wicker baskets ; Watson was con- victed in Denbighshire for burglary in 1862. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Bala, Merionethshire, to P. C. Jones, Llandderfil, or to Sergeant Williams, Corwen. — Bow- street, October 14. Stolen on the 16th ultimo, from Kidsgrove : a bay Horse, without white, nearly thorough bred, about 15 hands high, rising 6 years old, enlarged hind fetlocks with cutting, and near knee a little chipped. Information to be given to Superintendent Baker, Police Office, Tunstall, or at any Police Station in the county of Stafford.— Bow- street, Oct. 14. Stolen from a field in the Seven Sisters- road, Stoke Newington, on the night of the 18th or morning of the 19th ultimo, a dark grey Gelding, black legs, mane, and long tail undocked, 12^ hands high, four years old, well made, very fat, rough coat, having been turned out all the summer, no shoes, feet not trimmed up for a long time, goes fast, with first- rate action, and only partially broken in. £ 5 reward will be paid to any person giving such information as may lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders and re- covery of the pony. Stolen on the 7th instant, from a field in Friar's place, Acton: a dark chestnut Mare, 15 hands high, 8 years old, white star on forehead, off hind foot white, slightly ewe necked, round and rather drooping hind quarters ( large), ears inclined to lop.— Metropolitan Police, X Division, October 11. Stolen on the 4th instant, from a field near Shaw Heath House, Stockport : a bay Pony, about 12 hands high. Iufor- mation to be given to Mr. George Pearson, Shaw Heath House, Stockport.— Bow- street, October 9. Stolen during the night of the 5th instant, from a field at Newton- ley- Daresbury : a light brown half- bred Gelding, rising 4, about 15 hands high, white star on forehead, black legs, tail cut level and rather long. Information to be given to Superintendent Aston, Town Hall, Runcorn, Cheshire. — Bco- street, Octobers. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Absconded on the 28th ultimo, from the White Horse publichouse, Shepherd's Bush, charged with stealing a Photo- graphic Camera, Lens, and Tripod Stand; also a Box contain- ing Chemicals, Frames, and Glasses, the property of his master. A man, 26 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion ; dressed in shabby clothes and light billycock hat— Metropolitan Police, T Division, October 18. Absconded on the 14th instant, from No. 1, Glo'ster- road, Kensington, charged with stealing five yards of grey mixture Coating, five yards of blue Beaver, and five } .- jds of fancy Trousering in two lengths, the property of his master. A man 28 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, sallow complexion, black hair and whiskers; dressed in grey mixture, pea jacket, dark tweed trousers, aud blue alpacca deerstalker bat. — Metropolitan Police, T Division, October 18. Description of WALTER TUNSTALL, charged with embezzling 6s, the monies of Joseph Henry 2 P O L I C E G A Z E T T E. Ociober 18 Wilkinson and others, his masters, Bull- street, Birmingham : he is about 32 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, light hair, moustache, and imperial, right leg shorter than the left, and wears a high heel to his boot ; he is a pensioner, and has served in India. Information to be given to Chief Superin- tendent Glossop, Police Office, Biimingham.— Bow- street, October 18. Description of SAMUEL OWEN, a native of Lanca- shire, charged on a warrant with stealing on the 8th instaut: one silver verge Watch, double case, No. 541G, maker's name Mokes, Derby, the property of Edward Carrington, with whom he lodged ; also, at the same time, stealing one black cloth Coat with pockets outside, one brown cloth Waistcoat, and about 6s. iu Money, the property of a fellow lodger. He is a collier, 21 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, dark brown hair, no whiskers, blue eyes, small features, very small foot, small scar on nose from lighting on the 7th instant j dressed in woolltn cord trousers," and supposed to be wearing the stolen coat and waistcoat, may be wearing an old white slop under the coat, low crowned hat, and lace- up boots. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Cruit, Constabulary Office, Eckington, Derbyshire.— Bow- street, October 18. Stolen from a dwelling house at Mount Pleasant, near Barnard Castle, on the 23rd ult., the property of Mr. Robert Thomas : one double- barrelled Gun, makers Moore & Harris, London, has a hole near th6 muzzel of the right- hand barrel ; one shot Bag ; a black shooting Coat, two pockets inside, aud three outside ; a pair of leather Leggins, with steel springs ; aud lis. aud lod. in Money. By WALTER SPOONER, about 20 years of age, 5 feet high, rather stout built, blue eyes, looks peculiar with one eye, sallow complexion, very low forehead, light brown hair, aud has a slight moustache ; dressed iu a black shooting coat, black vest, dark mixture brown cord trousers, black cheesecutter cap, with two brass buttons, and strong lace- up boots ; tattooed with cross on wrist, and the figure of a soldier on one arm, and Walter Spoouer on the other arm, and several round dots on breast. Supposed to be a native of Ipswich, Suffolk. Information to be given to Superintendent Gregory, Richmond, Yorkshire or to Inspector Martindale, Greta Bridge, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- streei, October 16. Absconded from Crewe, on the 14th instant, charged with stealing the following articles: a pair of Toecap Punches; a pair of French Pincers, an eagle on the mouth piece ; a welt Plough and Set; anu three Set Irons, for. soles; the property of Mr. Phillip Wales, boot and shoe manufacturer, of Victoria- street, Crewe, his master ; also with stealiug a silver verge Watch, No- 61308, the property of John Purcell, labourer, of Crewe, where he had beeu lodging. WILLIAM BOYLE, alias BOYD, a bootcloser and a native of Glasgow, about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, swarthy complexion, dark hair and eyes, has a cross on right arm, and has been a soldier ; dressed in small plaid woollen trousers, black cloth jacket and waistcoat, black billycock hat, grey calico shirt, with one plait up the front, and two odd elastic- side boots, one wrinkled front, the other plain. Left a pocket- book behind him, in which was written ' Mr. Turner, boot manufacturer, Ross, Herefordshire,' and ' Mr. Stringers, shoe manufacturer, Openshaw, Manchester.' Information to be given to Superintendent Laxton, Nantwich, or to Inspector Morris, Police Office, Crewe, Cheshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, October 16. Description of GEORGE PAVEY, charged on a warrant with stealing a quantity of Wearing Apparel, some of which he is supposed to be wearing, and some has been sold by him in Brighton; he travels with cheap jewellery, and has a . pedlar's certificate, in the name of Charles Pavey, obtained at Westminster : he is 21 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, dark complexion, black hair, no whiskers, his left hand is para- lyzed, and he generally carries it in his pocket; he usually dresses in a black coat, light trousers, and low black hat. The following is a list of the articles stolen : two calico Shirts, with linen fronts ; two Coats, one a pepper- and- salt walking coat, the other black cloth ; two Waistcoats, one single- breasted black, the other dark blue cloth, single breasted ; a pair of Boots ; a flat- crowned black Hat, nearly new ; a light blue Necktie ; a scarf Necktie, with green and black stripes ; a fustian double- breasted Waistcoat, nearly new ; and a corduroy Jacket, with pockets on hips and plain sleeves. Information to be given to Chief Constable White, Brighton, Sussex.— Bow- street, October 16. Stolen from Wilford, near Nottingham, on the 12th inst: two black cloth Coats, a black velvet Vest, a brown cord Vest and Trousers, two striped woollen Shirts, a German silver Watch, and a silver albert Chain, the property of a fellow- lodger. By a man, who gave the name of JOHN A. COLLIER, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, pale face, and hair cut short .; dressed in black cloth trousers and vest, black pilot coat, and black billycock hat; he pretended to be religious. He will no doubt seek work as a collier. Information to be given to Superintendent Palethorpe, County Police Station, Nottingham.— Bow- street, October 16. black streamer, charged on a warrant with stealiug from No. 25, Gospel- gate, Louth, on the 7tli instant : a double- breasted cloth J aclcet, bound with three inches of dogskin and two rows of middle- sized jet buttons ; a black silk Tunic, frilled round and pinked out ; a pair of women's black kid elastic- side Boots; a white calico Chemise ; and about one and a half yard of white Calico; she may be wearing the stolen property, and may be iu compauy of a man named Jonathan Russell, a stonemason. Information to be given to Head Constable Roberts, Town Hall, Louth, Lincoln.— Bow- street, October 11, Description of JOHN RAFFLES, charged on a warrant with stealing .£ 18, belonging to his employer, the secretary to the Union Club, Brighton : 45 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, florid complexion, full face, sunken eyes, dark browu hair, whiskers turning grey, and inclined to be bald ; dressed in blown overcoat, with black frock coat under, striped pepper and salt trousers, and high black hat. Is a porter by trade it is supposed he wlli try to go abroad. Information to be given to Chief Constable White, Brightou, Sussex.— Bow- st., October 9. FELONIES. ( Not otherwise described). Description of JOHN BROWN, who absconded from Great Barr, on the 1st instant, charged with an assault on a little girl, 14 years of age, with intent to commit a rape : lie is 18 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, dark brown hair, no whiskers, a little light moustache, grey eyes, fair complexion, rather stout; dressed in white slop, cotton cord tnousers, patched on one knee, and between the legs, dark coloured vest, amber and green coloured necktie, dirty white'straw hat with band round, acd watertight boots, walks a little knock- kneed, likely to be visiting at Chipping Norton, or that neighbour- hood, or Northamptonshire, having friends living there. In-, formation to be given to Superintendent Holland, Police Office, Wednesbury, or to Police Constable Kent, Police Office,' Great Barr, near Birmingham, Staffordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, October 16. Decoyed away from her home, in Prussia, by gipsies : Anna Brooklyn, 4 years of age, tall, blue eyes, round forehead, fair complexion, but tanned by the sun, very light hair, cut short, hands and feet small, scar on left breast, has been traced to England. This child is supposed to be iu the possession of two gipsey women, and who was with the sup- posed lost child hop picking, one day only, at Mr. Evans's, Kyarsh, Kent, and left about 14 days since : one is about 25 years of age, tall and slight; dressed very neat, with coloured handkerchief rouud head aud neck, to form a hood, fastened by a brooch, with the likeness of a gentleman, has a profusion of black curly hair, very good looking, and talks very quickly : the other about 30 years of age, pale face, and long visage, had a very small bonnet, supposed to be travelling with vans. These women are known to the gipsies named Taylor, who travel into Kent, during hop picking, i' 100 reward will be paid on apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the child. Information to be given to Superintendent Hulse, Police Station, West Mailing, Kent.— Bow- street, October 9. Absconded ou the 5th instant, from H. M. S. ' Volage,' at Portsmouth, stealing £\ 7b : MOSES JAMES PIERCEY, assistant paymaster, 25 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, sallow complexion, dark hair, closely shaven, grey eyes, long eyelashes; dressed respectably, and has the appearance of a pugilist. Warrant issued. Information to be given at the Detective Department, Great Scotland- yard, London, S. W. — Metropolitan Police, October 14. Stolen from a dwelling- house in the borough of Middles- brough, on the morning oE the 10th instant: a black and yellow woollen Shirt.
