Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MB. O. •„• Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. Aa no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Description of ISAAC FAWKNER, late of Maccles- field, Cheshire, a hawker of earthenware, on a visit to a Wm. Ward, of Holbeck, a bricknaker, whose house he left for a walk about 10 30 a. m. on the 20th ultimo, aud was found drowned at 5.20 a. ra. on the lst instant, in the Air aud Calder Canal, at Woodlesford : an inquest has been held, and a verdict of ' Murdered by some person or persons unknown' returned. He is 55 years of a^ e, about 5 feet 9 inches long, brown hair ( turning grey) and moustache ; dressed in drab cloth trousers, with small black stripe, and a pair of dark tweed trousers underneath, puce aud yellow striped woollen shirt, a white cotton one underneath, white front and collar, black silk necktie, grey worsted stockings, and elastic- side boots, with four buttons. Information to be given to Super- intendent Hall, Constabulary Office, Wakefield, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, October 7. Description of BOBERT GILMOUR, charged with murder, committed at or near Shotts, in the parish of Shotts, and county of Lanark, ou the night of the lst, or morning of the 2nd instant: he was in the employment of the Caledonian Railway Company, as Inspector of Permanent Way, at Shotts, 32 to 35 years of age, 6 feet 3 inches high, strong, broad, aud straight build, brown curly hair, round reddish face, whiskers round face, and well back on cheeks; dressed in blue pilot cloth jacket, aud vest, blue cap. Is well known throughout Scotland, in connection with the making of railways, having in many places acted as ganger over navvies to Mr. Waddell, Railway Contractor. Is well known in Edinburgh and Glasgow, and over the whole Caledonian System, to servants of all the departments, as he has been in that Railway's employment for a considerable time. Stolen from the person in Leicester, on the 3rd instant : a gold Geneva Watch, No. 52206, gold Albert attached, long flat link pattern ; a silver lever Watch, with blue circle and ' C. Stolen from the person on the 2nd instant, on Bedford Race Course : a gold scarf Pin, with Diamond. Description of CHARLES WAT- KINSON, Stone mason, who has changed some of the notes : 55 years of age, 5 feet G inches high, slim build, long thin visage, long thin nose, wrinkled face, quite bald, red grizzly beard, rece atly shaved, small tuft left of chin ; brown baggy cloth trousers, dars mixture coat and vest, top hat, all new ; had a silver watch and gilt chain in his possession. He left Leicester for London, on the 26th ultimo. £ 5 reward will be paid on the recovery of the property, and conviction of the offender or offenders, as may lead thereto. Information to be given to Superintendent Palmer, Police Station, Rugby. — Boxo- street, October 2. FORGERY. Description of GEO. WILSON, a native of Bayswater, charged on a warrant with forgery : 20 years of age, 5 feet ;) inches high, slight build, pale complexion, no whiskers, small black moustache ; dressed in black frock coat, trousers, and vest, dark browu billycock hat, and Wellington boots ; smokes a briar pipe, with amber mouthpiece ; he is generally employed by quack doctors, posting small bills about the Country, headed ' Confidential' and was recently working for Mr. Smith, a Botanist, of 14, Merchant- street, Bristol, as a bill poster. Information to be given to Superintendent Denson, Aylesbury, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. Bow- street, October 11. Description of a woman who gave the name of MARY C. BROWN, charged on a warrant with forging the endorse- ment of a bill of exchange for £ 50 19s. 4d. ( drawn by the Bank of Bengal upon the Bank of England), by presenting it at Messrs. Thomas Barnard and Co.' s Bank, Bedford : she is about 45 years of age, about 5 feet 4 inches high, broad red face, dark hair and eyes, and speaks with an Irish accent; dressed in black bonnet, new fashionably made black jacket, new violet scarf round neclc, white and chocolate striped dress with panniers, and has also a new black shawl; carries a small black bag and a faucy basket, containing white lace, which she hawks about. She had tho whole of the money in gold. She frequents public- houses and generally drinks neat whiskey. £ 5 reward will be paid to any person giving such information as will lead to her apprehension, within three months from the 23rd September. Information to be given to Chief Constable Verey, Borough Police Office, Bedford.— B< no- strcet, October 2. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Between 12 midnight and 2 a. m. on the 6th instant, the vicarage at Arthington, near Otley, was burglariously entered, aud the following articles, the property of the Rev. John Hey, stolen therein : a light brown leather Purse, with elastic band round, contaiuing a £ 5 Bank of England Note ; £ 3 iu Gold ; and £ 2 in Silver and Copper ; a small silver tea Spoon, marked ' K.;' a silver fish Carver, with embossed handle, and small fishes engraved on the blade ; aud a silver Fork to match. Information to be given to Superintendent Croft, West Riding Constabulary, Otley. — Bow- street, October 9. Between 6 and 9 p. m. on the 29th ultimo, the house of Caleb Wm. Roberts, of the Delph, Brierley Hill, was broken aud entered, and the following articles stolen therein : a silver Geneva Watch, with the word ' Geneva' written on face, No. 45715 ; a silver verge Watch, with double case, engine turned, star and garter on centre of case, No. 5004 ; a gold Locket, with portrait inside; i set of gold Ear- rings, set with cameo, aud droppers attached ; a pair of Scales for weighing gold ; a seven- barrelled Revolver, with two barrels burst; a silver Match- box ; and a Purse containing 3s. or 4s. Also, between 6 30 aud 8 p. m. on the 6th instant, the house of the Rev. Josiah Stone, of Brierley Hill, in the county of Stafford, was broken and eutered, aud the following articles stolen therein : a pair of silver Sugar Tongs ; a gold mourning Brooch, set with pearls, aid hair enclosed in back ; and two silver- plated cruet- stand Tops. At about 7' 45 p. m two men of the following description were seen to leave the premises aud go in the direction of Stour- bridge : both of high stature, dressed in long dark cloth overcoats and top hats, and of gerteel appearance ; one of them is supposed to have injured his hand, blood- stains being on a door- case in the house which was forced open, and also on a jemmy which was left behiud. Information to be given to Superintendent Mills, Police Office, Brierley Hill, Stafford- shire.— Bow- street, October 9. Description of EDWARD CODLING, of Eccles, labourer, who absconded from Quidenham, Norfolk, ou the 28th ultimo, chaiged with breaking into a shop at Quidenham, on the night of the 27th ultimo : he is 20 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, sallow complexion, dark brown hair, slight brown moustache, white tuft of hair on top of head, slight impediment iu speech, and thin face ; dressed iu a dark mixed cloth coat and trousers, with black stripe down side, black chummy hat, and wrapper round neck. He is very likely to get work at some borsedealers as groom, or at some publicans as ostler. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Jones, East Harling, Norfolk.— Bow- street, October 4. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING Stoleu from a field in the Seven Sisters- road, Stoke Newington, on the aifjht of the 18th or morning of the I9th ultimo, a dark grey Gelding, black legs, mane, and } ong tail undocked, 12i bands high, four years old, well made, very fat, rough coat, having been turned out att the summer, no shoes, feet not trimmed up for a long time, goes fast, with first- rate action, and only partially broken in. £ b reward will be paid to any person giving such information as may lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders and re- covery of the pony. Stolen on the 7th instant, from a field in Friars- place, Acton : a dark chestnut Mare, 15 hands high, 8 years old, white star on forehead, off hind foot white, slightly ewe necked, round and rather drooping hind quarters ( large), ears inclined to lop.— Metropolitan Police, X Division, October lli Stolen on the 4th instant, from a field near Shaw Heath House, Stockport : a bay Pony, about 12 hands high. Infor- mation to be given to Mr. George Pearson, Shaw Heath House, Stockport.— Bow- street, October 9. Stolen during the night of the 5th instant, from a field at Newton- ley- Daresbury : a light brown half- bred Gelding, rising 4, about 15 hands high, white star on forehead, black legs, tail cut level and rather long. Information to be given to Superintendent Aston, Town Hall, Runcorn, Cheshire. — Bow- street, Octobcr 9. Further information respecting the Horse stolen from the Gaskell Arms Hotel, Much Wenlock, Salop, on the evening of the 9th, and advertised in the Police Gazette of the 12th August last: £ b reward is new offered for the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the horse. Information to be given to Superintended Ivins, Bridgnorth, or to Sergeant Thomas, Much Wenlock, Salop.— Bow- street, October 7. Stolen on the night of the 24th ultimo, from a field in the parish of Berriew, the property of Edward Owen, Cefen Vaenor : two male Donkeys, which have since been recovered, sold at Llangollen. By two men of the following description: JAMES HARRIS, alias IRISH JIM, alias DUBLIN BOB, about 45 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, dark brown hair, whiskers under chin, turning little grey, pale com- plexion, small features, small hazel eyes, scar on tbe comer of right eye: dressed in a new black cloth cap, with leather peak and strap in front, old pilot cloth monkey jacket, the nap worn off, cord trousers, dirtied with clay, good boots. JOHN HARRIS, son of the above named, about 24 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark complexion, dark hair, hazel eyes, large features, little or no whiskers; dressed in a dirty white jacket or slop, dirty cord trousers, and a black jimcrow hat. They encamp about the country making baskets and tins for sale. Information to be giveu at the Chief Constable's Office, Newtown, or to P. C. Sibbald, Berriew, Montgomeryshire, who holds a warrant for their apprehension.— Bow- street, October 7. Stolen on the 6th ultimo : a bay Cob, 14 hands high, star ou forehead, hind heels white, tail cut short, 3 shoes off. — Metropolitan Police, S Division, October 7. Stolen from an outhouse at Badshot, in the parish of Farnham, between 9 and 10 p. m. on the 29th ultimo : a small mare Donkey, 5 or 6 years old, with white face and legs, the property of George Prince. By a man, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fresh complexion, sandy hair and whiskers, short neck ; dressed in dark grev coat and vest,' old light trousers, heavy nailed boots, and dark cloth cap with peak and red spots on it; he is supposed to be known iu the districts of Newbury and Windsor, Berks. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Newland, Surrey Consta- bulary, Faruham.— Bow- street, October 4. Stolen from a stable and cart shed in tbe borough of Hertford, during the night of the lst or morning of the 2nd iustant: a black Horse, about 15 hands high, aged, rather straight back, saddle marked, very slight mark on knee from a fall, rather switch tail, small ears, and clean legged ; a full- size plain made spring Cart, painted green, picked out with light green, name of owner painted on the side of same ' Daniel Hale, Gardener, Hertford,' had a wippletree on when stoleu ; a set of strong Harness, brass- mounted; and a Chaise Cover, bound with red braid. A reward of .£ 10 and all reasonable expenses will be paid on recovery of the stolen property, or in proportion to the amount recovered and con- viction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Head Constable Jarrett, Borough Police, Hertford.— Bow- street, Octobcr 4. Stolen during the night of the 2Sth ultimo, from a field in the parish of Fen Ditton, adjoining Cambridge, the pro- perty of Mr. George Clark, of Cambridge : a chesnut nag Mare, 6 years old, about 15 hands high, mane and tail a shade lighter than body, had no shoes on, having been out to grass since the end of August, and is a very fast trotter. Supposed stolen by gipsies who had been at Stirbitch Fair on the 25th ultimo. £ 25 reward will be paid on conviction of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the mare. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Stretten, Cambridge, or to Inspector Greig, Bottisham, Cambridge.— Bow- street^ October 4. Stolen from a field at Swan Village, in the parish of West Bromwich, on the night of the 25th ultimo : a bay cob Horse, 3 years old, about 13i hands high, long black mane and tail, aud has a small speck on the eye on the near side. Also stolen, from a field at Greet's Green, in the parish of West Bromwich, during the night of the 28th ultimo : a dark P O L I C E G A Z E T T E. Ociober 11 brown Horse, aged, about 13 hands high, hind feet white, brown muzzle, and mane falling on the near side. Information to be given to Sergeant Smith, Police Station, Gleet's Green, West Bromwicli, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, October 2. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT Description of JANE DEWHURST, 36 years of age, about 5 feet 4 inches high, middle make, thin face, dark com- plexion, brown hair ; dressed iu a black dress flounced round the bottom, black cloth jacket, white hat aud feather with black streamer, charged on a warrant with stealing from No. 25, Gospel- gate, Louth, ou the 7th instant : a double- breasted cloth Jacket, bound with three iuches of dogskin and two rows of middle- sized jet buttons ; a black silk Tunic, frilled round and pinked out ; a pair of women's black kid elastic- side Boots; a white calico Chemise ; aud about one and a half yard of white Calico ; she may be wearing the stolen property, and may be in company of a man named Jonathan Russell, a stonemason. Information to be given to Head Constable Roberts, Town Hall, Louth, Lincoln.— Bow- street, Ociober 11, Description of JOHN RAFFLES, charged on a warrant with stealiug £ 18, belougiug to his employer, the secretary to the Union Club, Brighton : 45 years of age, 5 feet 7 iuches high, florid complexion, full face, sunkeu eyes, dark brown hair, whiskers turning grey, and inclined to be bald ; dressed in blown overcoat, with black frock coat under, striped pepper and salt trousers, and high black hat. Is a porter by trade, it is supposed he wlli try to go abroad. Information to be given to Chief Constable White, Brighton, Sussex.— Bow- st., October 9. Absconded from " Weymouth, on the 1st instant, charged with embezzling the sum of £ 15, the property of Captain Harcourt Mortimer Bengough, 77th Regiment : JAMES THORNTON, a corporal in tbe 77th Regiment, 21 years of age, 5 feet Ife inches high, fresh complexion, dark brovvu hair, blue eyes, a uative of Brighton, Sussex ; he took a ticket at the Dorchester Station, for Southampton, by the 6 p. m. train the same day, iu company with Johu Dugan, a corporal in the same Regiment, who deserted with him : Dugan is 24 years of age, 5 feet 5| inches high, fresh complexiou, dark browu hair, dark blue eyes, a native of Athloue, Ireland, has a scar on back of right hand ; they both were dressed when they left Dorchester, in dark coats, dark bowler hats, and uuiform trousers, they are supposed to be making for Portsmouth, where Thornton has some friends living. £ 2 reward will be paid for the apprehension of Thornton. They are both returned as deserters from the regiment. Information to be given to Head Constable Vickery, Police Office, Weymouth, who holds a warrant for the apprehension of Thornton.— Bow- street, October 7. Stolen from a dwelling- house at North Ormesby, near Middlesborough, on the 2nd instant, the property of Mr. John Wilson : a pair of copper Scales and two iron Weights, since recovered in Middlesborough ( sold); a puce, white, and grey woollen Shirt, nearly new, to fit a boy ; a red and white woollen Mutiler, aud a white ditto, not recovered. By a man of the following description : a joiner, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, fresh complexion, light hair, small grey eyes, slender figure, and a little round- shouldered ; dressed iu black cloth cap, coat, and vest, aud cotton cord trousers ; supposed to have worked at Bradford about two years ago, for Mr. Archibald Neal, a builder, aud a brother of his, called York Bill, was workiug there at the same time ; he stated that he had had 3 months for assaulting the police. Information to be giveu to Superintendent Simpson, North Riding Constabulary, South Stockton, or to Inspector Robson, Police Station, North Ormesby, Middlesborough, Yorkshire. •—. Description of LORENZA SHEPHARD, charged at Middlesbrough with embezzling : he is about 28 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, browu hair, whiskers rouud chin, proportionate figure ; dressed wheu last seen iu a black cloth coat, dark mixture trousers, aud black billycock hat: he is a native of Sands, near Whitby, aud is well known a Stokesley, and Normanby, iu the. North Riding of Yorkshire, where he has worked as a gardener. Information to Chief Constable Saggerson, Chief Coustable's Office, Middlesbrough, Yorkshire. — Bow- street, October 4. Stolen on the night of the 28 th ultimo, from a farm- yard at Eton Wick, Bucks, five Fowls, which have been recovered; supposed to have been stolen by a mau of the following description, as they were fouud in his possession, and who has absconded: PETER WOODS, alias PETER THE GIP, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, sallow com- plexiou, no whiskers, tuft of sandy beard on the chin; dressed in brown suull" jacket, light trousers, aud black billycock hat; has been a soldier. Information to bo given to Superinten- dent Dunham, Slough, or to Inspector Pearman, Eton, Bucks. — Bow- street, October 2. Absconded on the 10th ultimo, from Bradway, Derby- shire, charged ou a warrant with embezzling £ 200, and stealing several Books, the property of the Twenty Well Brick and Stone Company, Limited : WILLIAM EVANS, about 41 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, very stout, full chest, very fresh complexion, sandy hair, whiskers, aud moustache, inclined to be slightly bald on forehead, and blind of right eye ; dressed in dark clothes, aud low- crowned hat. Information to be given to Superinteudent Priest, Constabu- lary Office, Eckington, Derbyshire.— Bow- strcet, October 2. Description of HUGH FERGUSON, a travelling draper, charged with embezzling the sum of £ 7, the monies of his master, Mr. William McMath, draper, of Shepton Mallet : he is about 24 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark hair and whiskers ; dressed iu felt hat, grey coat and vest, and dark browu trousers, wears a gold chain, with locket attached, in which is the miuature of a female. Information to be giveu to Superintendent Emson, Somerset Constabulary, Temple Cloud, near Bristol, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Boic- street, October 2. Description of a man who lodged at the ' Rutland Arms' inn, Melton Mowbray, on the night of the 28th ultimo, and left early the next moruing, charged with stealing from the pocket of a fellow lodger, 3s. in Silver ; lid. in Coppers ; and a single- bladed Pocket- knife, with yellow handle : he is about 20 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high ; dressed in a black cloth coat, dark trousers aud vest, dark cap with peak, light coloured muffler, and white apron ; stated that he was a coach builder aud paiuter by trade. He was discharged from Falkingham Gaol the same day, after serving 4 mouths imprisonment there, for a similar offence. Information to be given to Superintendent Platts, Melton Mowbray, Leicester- shire.— Bow- street, October 2, Stolen between 6 and 8 p. m. on the 28th ultimo, in the city of Lichfield, the property of Thomas Chapman : a feather Bolster, three ditto Pillows, two Blankets, a calico Sheet, a grey woollen Shawl, a pair of woman's Boots, two men's calico Shirts, a Dress, a Bonnet, a Jacket, a Handkerchief, aud a Cauister. By a man aud woman, who were lodging with Chapman, and went by the nime of BOWES, aud sup- posed to be natives of Manchester : the mau is a priuter, aud has been working in the City about 6 weeks, about 50 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, slight built, stoops a little, dark hair, and large dark whiskers aud moustache, turning a little grey ; dressed in grey tweed coat aud vest, black cloth trousers, much worn and patched, and an old dark sammy hat. The woman is about 40 years of age, shiftt build, blind of one eye, aud the eyelid drops over the eye ; dressed in dark clothes, aud supposed to be wearing the stolen shawl. Iuformation to be given to Superintendent Hernaman, Police Station, Lichfield, Stafford.— Bow- street, October 2. FELONIES. ( Not otherwise described). Decoyed away from her home, iu Prussia, by gipsies : Anna Brooklyn, 4 years of age, tall, blue eyes, round forehead, fair complexion, but tanned by tho sun, very light hair, cut i short, hands and feet small, scar ou left breast, has beeu traced to England.
