Notice.— It ia requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MB. O. %• Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that on Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all betters addressed to the Editor most be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of Thomas Balkham, on the 26th instant: a silver Geneva Watch, No. 4711a, a double silver twisted Chain, with a blue bloodstone at the end, attached. Information to be given to Superintendent Butcher, Eye, Sussex.— Bow- street, August 28. Stolen from the person at Plymouth races, on the 22nd instant: a gold Geneva vertical Watch, white dial, stout heavy cases, the seconds hand has marked the face a little, flat back, flat flint glass, ring and swivel twisted out, and ' No. 9279,' on the cases. Information to be given to the Superintendent of Police, Stonehouse, Plymouth, Devon.— Bow- street, August 28. Stolen from the person at Great Yarmouth Races, on the 21st instant: A silver English lever Watch, No. 79378. A gold Geneva Watch, maker Hunt, Broad Row, Yar- mouth, No. 907, a long gold small- link Chain attached. Information to be given to Head Constable Tewsley, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.— Bow- street, August 26. Stolen from the person at Lewes Races : On the 9th instant, a black Opera Glass, engraved ' E. & E. Emanuel, The Hard, Portsea.' On the 10th instant, a small open- face Geneva silver Watch, No. 16196. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Lewes, or to Superintendent Peacock, Lewes, or any Police Station in East Sussex.— Bern- street, August 23. Stolen from the person in the Market place, Richmond, on the 17th instant: a lady's gold Geneva Watch, with the letters'B. W. F.' engraved on a shield on the outside case. Information to be given to Head Constable Garry, Richmond, Yorks.— Bow- street, August 21. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. During the night of the 27th instant, the dwelling house of Mr. George Foxen, near Toddington, Beds, was broken and entered, and stolen therein: a meerschaum Pipe, the stem has been broken, and has a German silver band ; two Razors, one ha3 a black handle, and is marked on the same ' Celebrated Razor,' the other has tortoiseshell handle ; 3d. in Coppers ; and eleven Postage Stamps. Supposed by tramps. Information to be given to Superintendent Shepherd, Woburn, or to Sergeant Quenby, Toddington, Beds.— Bow- street, August 30. Stolen between 8 a. m. and 7' 30 p. m. on the 21st instant, from a cottage at the parish of Chalfont- St.- Peter, by means of housebreaking : a dark grey witney Overcoat, with velvet collar ( since recovered) ; and a pair of men's old balmoral Boots, tipped at toe and heel, one of the tips off. By a man, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark com- plexion, dark brown hair, no whiskers or moustache, and slender figure ; dressed in old dark mixture coat and trousers, cloth cap, with French peak, and is supposed to be wearing the stolen boots. He was traced from Chalfout to Uxbridge, Southall, and London, and was last seen in the New Meat Market, Smithfield, about 7 a. m. on the 22nd instant. In- formation to be given to Inspector Ray, Police Station, ' Beaconsfield, Bucks— Bow- street, August 28. skirt; a brown Coat, very light material ; a pair of grey mixture cloth Trousers ; a pair of cotton cord Trousers, both new ; and a white billycock Hat, nearly new. Supposed by tramps, who left a pair of clogs on the premises. Information to be given to Superintendent Williamson, County Police Office, Macclesfield, Cheshire.— Bow- street, August 26. Between 8 a. m. and 12 noon on the 23rd instant the dwelling- house of Thomas Yates of Kittermore Green, in the parish of Brewood, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a black cloth Overcoat, dark plaid lining, two pockets outside; a black cloth Coat; a dark cloth Coat; a drab cloth Jacket; a pair of cotton cord Trousers, fall fronts; a black cloth Waistcoat ; a check Waistcoat; a drab cloth Waistcoat; a woollen plaid Shirt; a cotton Shirt; a pair of elastic- side Boots, nearly new ; and a pair of watertight Shoes, quite new. Supposed by two tramps— one about 28 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high ; the other about 26 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high ; they are probably wearing gome of the stolen articles, as they left behind them two old coats, a pair of trousers, two old shirts, aod two pair of old shoes. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Disney, Stafford, or to Sergeant Barrett, Police Station, Penkridge, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, Augusi 26. Between the 13th and 19th ultimo, the painters shop at Messrs. Richardson, Duck & Co., South Stockton, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : 7 or 8 Books of middle Gold, 3 or 4 Books of pale Gold, a small box of sable writing Pencils, a small box of camtl hair Pencils, small packages of gold, silver, and copper Bronze, in brown paper parcels, a glaziers Diamond, maker Sharatt and Newat, a small light brown canvas Bag, 2 Half- Crowns, and 3 Florins. Information to be given to Superintendent Simpson, North Riding Con- stabulary, South Stockton- on- Tees.— Bow- street, August 23. Stolen on the 19th instant, by means of housebreaking, at Roston, Derbyshire : two dark cloth Coats, made straight in front, with pockets outside, one of them is marked with drab paint on the back near the shoulder ; two Vests, one brown, the other of the same material as the coats; a pair of brown corduroy trousers ; a pair of cloth Trousers ; and two pairs of Boots, one with elastic sides, the ether lace- up. By two tramps, of low stature, who will probably be wearing the stolen articles, as they left their own clothes behind. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Whieldon, Ashbourne, Derbyshire.— Bow- street, August 23. Description of a man charged with burglary, at Howden, ou the 16th instant, and stealing £ 8 in Gold ; £ 5 in Silver; 12s. in Copper ; a wedding Ring, broken in two ; a common Keeper ; a lady's gold Ring, with large single amethyst stone; a pair of man's elastic- side Boots, nearly new, buttons on front, a button off one boot : he is an Italian, a blacksmith, about 25 years of age, 5 feet high, black hair, cut short, small black moustache, black whiskers, dark complexion, and speaks English badly ; dressed in light grey soft felt hat, light suit, vest and trousers lighter than the coat, black and red woollen shirt, very dirty, black and violet plaid woollen scarf, he may be wearing the stolen boots, or a pair of very old and much worn Wellingtons. Information to be given to Inspector Robertson, East Riding Constabulary, Howden.— Bow- street, August 21. On the night of the 15th instant the dwelling- house of Mr. J. Chamberlain, of Beeby, Leicestershire, was broken and entered and stolen therein : a gold lever Watch, white dial and black figures, no dome, consular cases, much worn, No. 50268, maker Harrison, Warwick ; a massive gold guard Chain, with heavy common links ; eight Sovereigns, one Shilling and Sixpence, and Threepence in Silver ; nine Cigars ; and a pair of brown tweed Trousers, with buttons stamped ' Moxon, Leicester.' Also on the same night the larder of the Rev. E. L. Woodcock, of Beeby Rectory, was broken and entered, and some eatables stolen therein. These offences are supposed to have been committed by two tramps, who were seen in the neighbourhood ; one a man about 50 years of age, the other younger. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Burdett, Aylestone, or to the County Constabulary Office, Leicester.— Bow- street, August 19. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen from a meadow near Woburn, Beds, during the night of the 24th instant: an Oxfordshire Down Ewe, in good condition, not marked. Information to be given to Superintendent Shepherd, Woburn, Beds.— Bow- st., Aug. 30. Stolen from Warminster, about the 21st instant: six cart Colts, four 2 years old, and two yearlings— three grey, two brown, and one chestnut colour. Information to be given to Superintendent Abbott, Warminster, Wilts.— Bow- street, August 30. Stolen from a field at Bilston, on the 22nd instant: a black horse Pony, 13£ hands high, black legs, few white saddle marks on back, right eye out, aged, and in good con- dition, the property of John Burton. Information to be given to Superintendent McCrea, Police Station, Bilston, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, August 28. holds a pedlar's certificate granted at Oswestry. He is accompanied by another man, about 19 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion, light hair, and no whiskers; dressed in a cap without peak, cord waistcoat, with sleeves and four rows of white bone buttons on breast, and cord or moleskin trousers. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Richardson, Wellington, or to Sergeant Wyley, Madeley, Salop, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, A uqust 28. Stolen from a field on the Dudley- road, in the occupation of Mr. Greenhouse, butcher, on the night of the 13th instant: a dark brown Mare, about 14 hands high, black legs, switch tail, and about 11 years of age. £ 2 reward will be given on the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Chief Constable Segrave, Wolver- hampton, Staffordshire.— Bvw- street, August 26. • Stolen from Liskeard Market on the 12th instant: two Oxen, from 3 to 4 years old, both marked at the top of the near ear, a slit in the off ear, and 1. C. burnt in on each horn ; one is a dark brown, the other is a shade lighter. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Marshall, Bodmin, Cornwall — Bcrw- street, August 26. Supposed stolen from a field at Tapton, on the night of the 19th instant: a dark brown Horse Pony, 11 hands high, blind on right eye, and scar on left side. Information to be given to Superintendent Oldham, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. — Bow- street, August 23. Stolen from a field at Sand, in the parish of Wedmore, on the night of the 18th instant : a dark brown Mare, about 16 hands high, one white foot behind, near side, white star on forehead, and a wound on the white foot. £ 2 reward. Information to be given to Superintendent Gillbanks, Somerset Constabulary, Axbridge.— Bow- street, August 23. Stolen from a field at Woolston, in the parish of St. Mary's Extra, on the night of the 19th instant: a bay Gelding, eged, 14 hands high, few white spots on back, caused by the pad, marks of wound on near hind leg, caused by being hung up in a trace. Information to be given to Superintendent Stannard, Hants Constabulary Station, Bitterne.— Bow- street, August 23. Stolen during the night of the 18th instant, from a field in the parish of Stapleford, Essex : a light bay Mare, 4 years old, 15| hands high, long mane, switch tail, a little white round the off hind hoof, scar on near fore hoof, and a blemish on off eye. Information to be given to Inspector Gilpin, Romford, Essex.— Bow- street, August 21. Stolen from a yard at Copalder, in the parish of Benwick, in the Isle- of- Ely : a small light brown she Donkey, has a stumpy foot on the near side behind, which causes it to walk on its toe, and had one shoe off. Information to be given to Inspector Mitchell, Chatteris, Cambs.— Bow- st., August 21 Stolen from a field at Turnham Green, Chiswick: a brown Gelding, 6 years old, 15 hands high, lately blistered on fore coronets, also over loins, and white star on forehead. — Metropolitan Police, T Division, August 19. Charged with cattle stealing at Muirhead of Logie Forfarshire, on 3rd November last : THOMAS MOFFAT alias PAPER COLLAR, flesher or drover, of Glasgow, but of Irish descent, about 21 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, red- brown hair cut short, no whiskers, grey eyes, common nose, round face, fresh and clear complexion, ordinary make, and smart appearance; he left Glasgow at the end of November last, and went to Newcastle- upon- Tyne or neigh- bourhood ; he was seen recently at Stagshawbank Fair, Northumberland, and is supposed to be acting as a horse, sheep, or cattle drover in the north of England. He may have assumed another name, probably MURPHY. Infor- mation to be given to the Chief Constable of Forfarshire Forfar, N. B.— Bow- street, August 19. Stolen from a field at Bishopstone, Wilts, on the 16th instant, a brown nag Mare, aged, about 14 hands high, shod with leather on the near hind foot. Information to be given to Superintendent Noith, Wilts Constabulary, Swindon. Bow- street, August 19. Stolen from a stable at the Gaskell Arms Hotel, on the night of the 9th instant, the property of Mr. Phillip Cox, farmer, Shipton : a bay Mare, 14 hands high, rising 4 years old, bang tail, white blaze down forehead, and black legs : also a saddle nearly new, with two dark coloured girths, ;. ud a Bridle with Pelham bit, with only one rein on. £ 2 reward is offered for the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offeuders. Information to be given to Superintendent Ivins, Bridgnorth, or to Sergeant Thomas, Much Wenlock, Salop.— Bow- street, August 19. During the afternoon of the 23rd instant, the dwelling- Description of MOSES BRADDOCK, a gipsy and house of Robert Williams, of Bosley, near Macclesfield, was razor grinder, charged with stealing a Donkey from Build- broken and entered and stolen therein : a suit of new black was, on the 22nd ultimo, the property of Jane Wood : about cloth Clothes, the vest double- breasted, with black buttons ; 25 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark complexion, a black cloth Overcoat, nearly new, with black buttons ; a dark brown hair, and whiskers shaved off chin ; dressed in light grey tweed Coat, nearly new, with pockets outside the j black billycock hat, grey jacket, and cotton cord trousers ; he LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Absconded, charged with stealing a Geneva Watch • THOMAS VINCENT, about 29 or 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, light curly hair, no whiskers, but has a mous- tache, rather full face ; dressed in a brown cloth coat and vest, faded, fustian trousers, dark felt hat, Wellington boots torn at the spring outside, he is a watch jobber, and has some new tools with him. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Prothero, Carnarvon, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, August 30. Absconded from Middlesbrough, charged with stealing a Coat, which he pledged at North Ormesby, about 1 p. m.° on 4 P O L I C E G A Z E T T E. August 2 the 27th instant: a raa « , about 35 yours of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, sallow coiuulexiou, small dark whiskers ; dressed in a billycock hat, dark olath coat, and supposed dirty mole- skin trousers, information to be given to Chief Constable Saggerson, Middlesbrough, York.— Mow- street, August 30. Stolen from ft Temperance Hotel, in Crewe, between 9 and 10 a. m. on the 29tli instant: a square paisley Shawl, by a man about 50 years of age, dark complexion, whiskers turning grey, stout built, whiskers shaved otf half way up the face, hollow cheeks, and has the appearance of a tailor; dressed in datk clothes, and high hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Laxton, Nantwich, or to Inspector Morris, Police Office, Crewe, Cheshire.— Bow- street, August 30. Description of JAMES SWIFT MASSEY, late assistant rate collector for the borough of Birmingham, who is chawed on a warrant with embezzling £ 11 18s, 4d.: about 45 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches nigh, pale complexion, large features, dark brown curly hair, and stout make ; dressed respectably, walks very badly, and turns his feet ( out; it is supposed that he is accompanied by a respeetaole- Irtokifig woman, about 28 years of age, tall, and fresh complexion. Information to be " given to Chief Superintendent Glossop, Police Office, Birmingham, who holds a warrant for his appre- hension.— Bow- strati, August 28. Stolen on the 14th instant, from the ' Leg of Mutton, inn, St. Mary- street, Bedford: a galvanic Battery ( such as usually used at markets and fairs), it lias a dial, with the names ' Watkins and Tiejen, Makers,' on it, enclosed in a square deal box painted line, and propelled on three wheels. By a sailor, 28 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, sHort curly hair, cataract ou left eye, and rather round shouldered ; dressed in a shabby blue'jacket, blue trousers, afcd blue tap with French peak. Information to be given to Chief Con- stable Very, Borough Police Office, Bedford.— Bow- street August 26. Description of JOHN COTTERILL, who is charged with stealing .£ 10 of his masters, Messrs.' Rolandi and Long- more, 77, Pershore- street., Birmingham, on the 23rd instant : about 22 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high dark brown hair, fresh complexion, very large mouth, very sullen appear- ance, anil turns his feet out very m. ich ; he formerly resided at Evesham, Worcestershire. Information to be giveu to Chief Superintendent Glossop, Police Offices Birmingham, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- slreett August 26. Stolen from the dwelling- house of Thomas Hughes, Fawkham, near Dartford, on the 24th instant : a new black cloth Coat. ; two white cotton Shirts ; a blue striped ditto ; a pair cf light mixture cloth Trousers ; aud a white Petticoat, By a man, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, biown hair ( cut short) aud moustache, walks cre^ t, aud is supposed to have been in the Army ; dressed iu black cloth coat, dark cloth trousers aud vest, thin boots, aud black hard felt hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Fread, Police Station, Dartford, Kent.— Bow- street, August 26. Stolen at Tynemouth ou the 22nd instant : a lady's gold lever Watch, No. 86009, side cap and four jewels, makers' name ' Reid and Sons, Newcastle- on- Tyne.' By a man, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, thin features, dark whiskers, and leans forward; dressed in a dark suit, blue tie, and carried an umbrella with a cover. Information to- be given to Head Constable Stewart, Tynemouth, Northum- berland.— lime- street, August 26. Absconded from Wheatley, near Oxford, charged with stealing a brickmakers turning Iron, wliich has been recovered : WILLIAM alias DOODEY DOVER, about 21 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, sandy hair; dressed in old white slop, aud old cord trousers ; is likely to be working in a brickfield. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Fernsby, or Inspector Yates, County Police Station, Oxford, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, August 23. Description of CHARLES BRAKE, who has absconded from Wimbourn Minster, charged with embezzliug Monies received by him as Secretary to the Lodge of Odd Fellows, and for whose apprehension a warrant has been issued : he is a baker, 24 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, very light com- plexion, light hair, small whiskers inclined to be sandy, small brown eyes, and has a quick shuffling walk ; dressed in a light grey suit, black top coat, and white soft hat. In- formation to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Hammond, Dorset Constabulary, Wimboume.— Bow- street, August, 23. Absconded, charged on a warrant with stealing £ 700, CHARLES VENNELL, late manager to Messrs. G. H. Thorneycroft and Co., Iron Masters, Upper Thames- street, London ; he is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches hi^ h, full face, dark hair, small beard aud moustache, aud of Jewish appearance. Information to be given to Inspector Bailey, City of London Police, Detective Department, No. 26, Old Jewry, London, E. C.— how- street, August 23 » Absconded from Tredegar, Monmouthshire, in May last, WILLIAM GREEY, managing clerk in the County Court Office there, he is charge'I with embezzling and stealing various sums of money to a large amount, belonging to liit- master, the registrar of the court : he came to Tredegar from Worcester iu April, 1871, where he carried on the work of an accountant for about 2 years, aud previous to that was em- ployed at the County Court Office at Chippenham, Wiltshire, and was also clerk to the Highway Board there, prior to which he was clerk or assistant to his fatjber, at the Eastrey Union, near Sandwich, Kent, where he is also known, he was last heard of at Jersey : he is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 6 inches high, florid complexion, with very red hair and whiskers, the back of his neck marked with small pox, small grey eyes, walks with a strut, aud his clothes are made to lit very tightly. Information to be given to Superintendent Fowler, Police Station, Tredegar, Monmouthshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, August 23. Stolen from a stable at Bourne Farm, Sandhurst, between 8' 30 p. m. on the 12th and 6 a. m. on the 14th iustaut: an old black pilot Coat, pockets at sides, one inside breast, the property of William Newick. By JOHN BOURNE, alias BATTLE JACK, about 6 feet high, middle age, stout builf., swarthy complexion, brown hair, sandy beard and whiskers ; dressed in dirty white slop, old cord trousers, and billy- cock hat, may be wearing the stolen coat: he is a native of Ewhurst, Sussex, and works as a labourer in Kent, Sussex, aud Surrey, is known to the Police in Kent, aud East Sussex. Information to be given to Superintendent Morgan, Kent County Constabulary, Cranbrook, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. - Bow- st., August 23. Absconded on the 20th instant, from No. 536, New Oxford- street, stealing £ 70 in Gold, and a £ 5 Bank o England Note, the money of his employer : a man, 23 years of age, 6 feet 7 inches high, fair complexion, very red hair, small eyes, near sighted, small whiskers, small pimples about mouth and ehiu ; dressed in blue ribbed frock coat and vest, light trousers, high black hat, and side- spring boots; of gentlemanly ap|> earance, and is likely to go to America.— — Metropolitan Police, E Division, August 23. Charged with embezzling £ 4 10s., the money of his employer. A man, 21 years of age, 5 feet 6 iuches high, fair complexion and hair, small whiskers; dressed in light coat and vest, dark mixture trouseis, aud brown deerstalker hat. — Metropolitan Police, T Division, August 23. Absconded from Grupdisburgh, charged with larceny : EDWARD BARKER, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 3 or • A iuohea high, dark hair, sallow complexion, whiskers shaved off, fiat feet, and turns liis toes out • he has a relative in London, and another in Wincjsor, and w kuown at William's-, mews, Portland- place, London.
