CONTAINING The substa^ te of all Informations received in eases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 5241 FRIDAY, AUGUST 16, 1872. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may hear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all appUcations in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may bo made and addressed to MB. C. %* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor most be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Dnder Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. FORGERY. Description of a man who obtained £ 20 by means of forged cheques from the steward of the Great Eastern Bail- way Company's steamship ' Zealous,' cn the passage from Harwich to Antwerp, on the 1st instant: an Englishman, about 5 feet S inches high, dark complexion, small features, slight dark whiskers, no moustache, round shouldered, apparently suffering from some Spinal complaint, and wearing an apparatus round the body tb support the back ; dressed in black frock coat, dark tweeii overcoat, vest, and trousers, and brown felt hat; speaks a little French. Information to be given to Superintendent Hedington, Great Eastern Railway, Bishopsgat^ Station.— Dow- street, August 10. Absconded on the 24th June last, charged on a warrant with forgery : HENRY KAY, a leather factor, late of Leeds, about 35 years of age, about 5 feet 5 iuches high, stout build, florid complexion, light hair, thin on the top of the head, whiskers round the face ; dressed iu dark mixture clothes, and wore a black paramatta hat, see Police Gazette of 28th June last. £ 100 reward. Stolen from the person of a gentleman at Clay Cross ou the 13th instant : a silver lever Watch, gold dial, jewelled in four holes, engine- turned case, much worn, maker Blundell, Liverpool, No. 3342. Stolen from the person in Brighton, between the 9th and 13th instant: A small silver Geneva Watch, ' J. W. H.' scratched on inside of outer case. A double- case silver lever Watch. A large silver Geneva Watch. A gold lever Watch, maker Dent, London A " small silver Geneva Watch, steel hands, jewelled in one hole. The gold repeater aud stop Watch, maker Couivoisier, adver- tised iu the Police Gazette of the 9th instant, has been recovered. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Brighton.— Bmo- street, August 12, About 11 a. m. ou the 4th instant, a young girl named kerchief, marked ' E. Dickenson.' By a tramp about 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high ; dressed in a white slop, black hat, blue striped shirt, dark trousers, and lace- up boots. In- formation to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Fernsby, or Inspector Yates, County Police Station, Oxford.— Bow- street, August 9. Stolen from the person in Brighton, since the 5th instant : A silver Watch, No. 12061, with a gold snake pattern Albert, with three double links, and a half of a locket attached, having the words ' In memory of' in black letters on it. A small silver Geneva Watch, minute hand, engine turned case, ' Richardson' supposed to be scratched on inside. A small size silver hunter, English made, has ' W. B.' and November 11, 1865, on inside of case, a gold albert attached, and a gold locket with blue enamelled drop. A silver Geneva Watch, with gold face. A double case gold Geneva Watch, gold dial, maker Secomte. A gold hunting Watch, small size, maker Gonard Penton. A large size gold Geneva Watch, white face, case dented, and a piece of gold let in near where the case fastens. Stolen from the person in Brighton, on the 6th instant: A plain gold French Watch, with gold AlbeiJ Chaiij with a Whistle at the end. An old gold Watch, with gold face, with a black Chain attached. A gold lever Watch, has a small place in upper case to see the figures, and small enamel on the back. A silver hunting Watch, ' Davis' on inner case, with a gold Albert Chain attached, having on it a gold Key and Locket. A pearl and diamond horseshoe Pin. A gold Pin, set with pearls, and has a pearl in blue enamel in the centre. A pair of black opera pebble Glasses, maker Fisher. A large silver lever single case Watch, with imitation com- pensating balance. A gold open- lace level Watch, maker Booth, Coventry, No. 54298. A large gold English lever Watch, single case, plain face, maker Shrivell, Brighton, with a gold curb Chain and a Guinea, dated 1797, attached. A small gold Geneva Watch, the glass cracked, and a small crack in the dial, a gold albert Chain, with a gold Locket, containing the likenesses of two gentlemen, and some Trinkets; also a gold Ring, with bloodstone. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Brighton, Sussex.— Bow- street, August 9. Wellington, or to Sergeant Barrett, Shiffnal, Salop.— 2low- street, August 1G. Further information respecting the two Welsh Lambe, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 14th instant, as stolen from Horton, near Malpas, the man therein described, has been traced, and the sheep which he had iu hi3 possession, are not those missing, aud the man in not to be apprehended ; the Lambs are still missing. Information to bie given to Superintendent Wilson, Tattenhall, or to Sergeant Powell, Malpas, Cheshire.— Bow- street, August 16. Stolen from a field at Mosely during the night of the 10th instant : a brown horse Cob, 14i hands high, 7 years old, one fore and one hind foot white, collar mark on shoulder, and sides rubbed by the shafts, tail cut short. £ 5 reward will be paid on conviction of the offender or offenders on application to Superintendent Humphreys, King's Heath, Worcestershire.— Bow- street, August 14. Stolen from a meadow at Santon Downham, during the night of the 6th instant: a brown cart Mare, 15 bands high, white star on forehead, one white hind foot, about 6 years old, and had on a Plough Bridle with brass on each winker. Has been traced to Watton, thence to Swaffham. By a boy, 12 years of age, light complexion, and light brown hair; dressed in old drabbet slop, dark cloth trousers and cap. Information to be given to Inspector Hoggar, Police Station, Brandon, Suffolk. — Bow- street, August 12. Stolen from a stable at the Gaskell Arms Hotel, on the night of the 9th iustant, the property of Mr. Phillip Cox, farmer, Shipton: a bay Mare, 14 hands high, rising 4 years old, bang tail, white blaze down forehead, and black legs : also a saddle nearly new, with two dark coloured girths, und a Bridle with Pelham bit, with only one rein on. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Ivins, Bridgnorth, Salop. — Bow- street, August 12. Stolen from Midsomer Norton, on the night of the 27th ultimo : a brown gelding Donkey, about 10 years old, without shoes, and a large patch of hair rubbed off the rnmpT Supposed by ^ dirty looking man, having the appearance of a gipsy. Information to be giveu to Superintendent Emson, Somerset Constabulary, Temple Cloud, near Bristol.— Bow- street, August 9. ' « BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen from a dwelling- house in Runcorn, between 11' 30 p. m. on the 3rd, and 8 a. m. on the 4th instant, the undermentioned articles: a strong black cloth monkey Jacket, two pockets outside laps, and one in left breast, nearly new ; a ditto, far worn ; a brown and white woollen plaid Shawl, large size and pattern, nearly new ; a blue and white striped cotton Shirt, metal buttons, quite new ; a Scotch Cap, made of strong dark cloth, Brooch in front, tassel on top, and ribbon behind; and a pair of man's Boots, with elastic sides, plain fronts, one has been cut on the instep, and had a piece of soft leather stitched near the hole, nearly new. ' Supposed by a tramp, as he left a pair of shooting boots, tops made of crimped leather, toes capped, and flumped soles, far worn, in the yard behind him. Information to be given to Superintendent Aston, Police Station, Runcorn, Cheshire.— Bow- street, August 5. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING Supposed stolen on the 4th instant, from a field in Chester- street, Wrexham : a light grey Pony, from 10£ to 11 hands high, aged, with a long tail, and clipped; and a dark- coloured Colt, about 6 weeks old. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Bradshaw, Police Office, Wrexham, Denbighshire.— Boio- street, August 16. The Shropshire down Ewe, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 5th instant, as stolen from Bickley, Cheshire, has been found staying, and restored to the owner.— Bow- st., August 16. Description of two men charged with stealing four Bank Notes, three for £ 10 each, and one for £ 5, the property of Mr. John Steel, of North Witham, near Grantham, at Horn- castle Fair, on the 14th instant: JOHN WILSON, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark hair aud whiskers, and sallow complexion ; dressed in short grey mixture coat, and high silk hat. The other about 60 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, grey hair and whiskers ; dressed in long black cloth coat and waistcoat, cotton cord trousers, and high silk hat; both have the appearance of low horse dealers, and are supposed to come from either Leeds or Nottingham, they left behind them a bright bay Horse, aged, 16 hands high, black legs, good mane, long square tail, reaching to the hocks, white marks on the off side under saddle, plain head, in fair condition, and hollow back, it is supposed to have been stolen. Warrants are issued for their apprehension. Information to be given to Superintendent Jarvis, Horncastle, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, August 16. Stolen from the dwelling- house of Robert Taylor, in the parish of Sittingbourne, between 6 30 a. 111. and 6 30 p. m. on the 12th instant : a pair of Wellington Boots, tops cut off; a pair of women's kid Boots, nearly new ; a black monkey Jacket with red plaid lining; two black cloth Coats ; one do. Jacket i a pair of black cloth Trousers ; one do. woollen cord ; one do. tweed ; a pair of Braces ; a white dirty cotton Shirt ; a paisley Shawl; a butcher's Knife, & c. By a man, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high; dressed in a white slop, light cord or fustian trousers, cloth cap with peak, tuft of dark hair on chin, no whiskers ; he was seen carrying a large bundle across his shoulder iu a white wrapper, and is supposed to be wearing the stolen boots, as an old pair was left behind. Information to be given to Superintendent Mayne, Sittingbourne Police Station, Kent.— Bow- street, August 16. Stelen about 12* 30 p. m. on the 5th instant, from a bed- room at the ' Horn and Trumpet' inn, Bewdley, £ 15 10s. in Gold. By ALFRED FULLER, alias ALFRED GLASS, who had been lodging there, about 25 years of age, about 5 feet 4 inches high, brown hair, no whiskers or moustache, long thin face, and rather large Roman nose; dressed in a white hard deerstalker hat, black vest with blue satin spots, dark striped trousers, old elastic- side boots, aud had no coat on when he left. He may be found at low public- houses, as he is fond of singing and dancing. Any one giving such information as will lead to his apprehension aud convic- tion shall receive £ 3 reward. Information to be given to Head Constable Fisher, Town Hall, Bewdley, who" holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- stred, August 12. Absconded, WM. ROWLINGS, charged on warrant with having on the 25th of Juue last, at the parish of Tipton he being a commission ageut and servant to James Brown' embezzled £ 1 5s.: he is about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, slightly built, brown hair aud eyes, sallow complexion, long thin face and chin, bad teeth, " and lisps a little; dressed in black silk hat, black frock coat, black vest P O L I C E G A Z E T T E. Stolen from a bedroom at tho ' Maid's Head' inn, Stafford, on the 6th instant: a gold Chain, with gold Locket, containing a gentleman's likeness, gold Seal ancl Pencil- case attached ; a King, with initials ' E. P.; 1 a lady's ditto, with live stones ; a ditto hair Ring, with kratials ' E. S.;' two steel Purses ; a pair of gold Ear- rings au- d Brooch, with corals; a ditto, with crystals ; a ditto, plain ; a silver Brooch, with crystals ; a crimson satin Scarf; aud about £ 5 in Money. By a man, about 26 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, well built, dark curly hair, fresh looking, of smart aud respectable appearance ; dressed in grey jacket, black aud white plaid trousers, and carried a black portmanteau ; represented him- self to be a comedian. Supposed to be well known in Liver- pool. Information to be given to Inspector Bowen, Guildhall, Stafford.— Bow- street, August 9. On the nignt of the 28th ultimo a man obtained lodgings at the White Lion Inn, Lichfield- street, Burton- ou- Treut, and stole therein : a brown shooting Jacket, two pockets outside and one inside breast pocket; a white moselle Vest, both old ; a white silk Handkerchief, yellow border; a cameo set of Ear- rings arid Brooch; and a lady's Belt, black corded silk with plated gold Buckle, snake pattern. He is about 22 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, light complexion, light hair, no whiskers or moustache, smart appearance; dressed in a light grey suit and black hat. Information to be given to Superntendent Oswell, Burton- on- Trent, Stafford- shire.— Bow- street, August 9. Stolen on the 6th instant, from the dwelling- house, 52, Bailiff- street, Northampton : £ 2 10s. iu Gold. By a mau who took lodgings at the house, stating that be was clerk at the Railway Station, which was false : he is about 27 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark brown hair, small whiskers, cross- eyed, nose turned a little on one side, left eye rather larger than the light, aud has a very proruineut upper tooth ; dressed in a light straw hat with a black band, light blue necktie, bright blue ribbed cloth jacket and vest, black and white small plaid trousers, with a black stripe dowu the side. He is the same man who is described in the Police Gazette of the 7th instant, as having stolen a gold Watch, from a dwelling- house in the borough of Leicester, on the 2ud iust., and the clothes he was then wearing were left behind, at 52, Bailiff- street, Northampton. Description of JAMES WRIGHT, an auctioneer, who absconded from Stroud, Gloucestershire, on the 20th ultimo, charged with putting off three forged Bills of Exchange : he is about 39 years of age, about 5 feet 8 iuches high, light com- plexion, long sandy whiskers, high forehead, has lost the left tuumb, is a native of Totshill, near Carlisle, and is well known at Gretna- green. Information to be given to Superintendent Hanbridge, Stroud, Gloucester, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, A uqust 9. Stolen from the dwelling- house of Stephen Phillips, Snodland, Kent: a pair of blucher Boots, nearly uew ; a. pair of woman's elastic- side Boots, old, with new elastics ; a pair of woman's leather Boots ; two waterproof Macintoshes, oue black, the other light, stained with brown ; a night Dress, marked ' J. M. P.' in red cotton ; an unbleached Pillow- case; a parcel of Silk, in white paper ; a copper Kettle ; and a white co- irse linen Apron, torn at oue corner. By a lodger, a discharged soldier from the 44th Regiment, from 25to30yrs. of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, light complexion, hair, whiskers, and moustache ; dressed in dark coat aud vest, light moleskin trousers, and light linen hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Hulse, kent Constabulary, West Malling.— Bow- street, August 7. Absconded on the 31st ultimo, stealing .613, the moneys of his master : a German, 23 years of age, 5 l'eet 4 inches high, fresh complexiou, fair hair ; dressed iu drab suit aud straw hat; is likely to emigrate.— Metropolitan Police, M Division, August 7. Stolen on the 2nd instant, from 36, Rathbone- place, St. Marylebone : £ 22 14s. ( id., the money of his employer, by a porter, 17 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fair com- plexion ; daessed iu dark suit and black felt hat, aud wore a black albert.— Metropolitan Police, E Division, August 7. rEAUBS AMD AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS. Description of a mau charged with assaulting Mary Ann Mansell, 11 years of age, with intent to ravish her, at the parish of Edgmond, Salop, on the 8th instant : about 28 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, pale complexion, dark hair, whiskers, and moustache ; dressed in dark clothes, soft hat, blue necktie with white spots. Information to be given to Chief Superinteudeut Richardson, Wellington, or to Sergeant Christie, Newport, Salop.— Bow- street, August 14. On the 20th ultimo, ELIZABETH WRIGHT, late of West Bromwich, abandoned a male child of the age of four weeks at Redditch, Worcestershire, whereby the life of the child was endangered : she is about 39 years of age, slightly made, and fair complexion ; dressed in a dark bonuet, with rose in front, dark cotton spotted dress, black waterproof mantle, aud a crinoline, with scolloped edge, bound iu scarlet. She left West Bromwich Union, on the 19th ultimo, while, there, she stated she had come from Liverpool, iu search of hei husband. Information to be given to Superintendent Bevan, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire.— Bow- street, August 12. Description of ALBERT MAUNDER, charged on a • warrant with obtaining a watch by false pretences, the property of John Lulham : he is about 28 years of age, 5 feet 10 iuches high, slightly made, dark curly hair, dark whiskers and moustache; dressed iu black cloth coat and vest, mixed tweed troupers, and black hat. He is a watchmaker. Infor- mation to be given to Chief Constable White, Brighton, Sucsex.— Bine- street, August 9. Description of a mau who obtained £ 10, from the land- lord of the Paris Hotel, Folkestone, under false pretences, by passing a Cheque ou the London and County Bank, at Tuu- bridge: he gave the name of A. H. HEIGHTON, coal merch; nt, thti cheque was Inaded Cox and Co., and signed A. Infoimation to be give to Superintendent Martin, Police Office, Folkestone.— Bow I street, August 7. 1 Description of THOMAS FAWCETT, alias PUDDING TOM, charged with obtaining by false pretences ou the 27th July last, from Isaac Turner, watchmaker, Penrith : a silver verge Watch, capped with a seconds pointer, No. 7384, maker Eaton, London : he is about 35 years of age, ft feet 8 or 9 inches high, fresh complexion, saudy whiskers, light browu hair, stout made, stammers very much when talking ; dressed in a dark cloth coat and waistcoat, fustian trousers, aud black billycock hat; he is a native of Temple Sowerby, Westmorland, a warrant has been issued for his apprehension. Information to be given to Inspector Bertram, Penrith, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle.— Bow- street, August 7. MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATIONS. Description of CATHERINE BRANT ( name supposed to be fictitious), remanded at Worcester, charged with con- spiring with another woman to defraud : about 22 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, freckled face, light brown hair, blue eyes, ' . J. Burke' tattooed on right arm, ' T. D.' ou left ; dressed in plaid skirt, black bodice, black jacket and white bonnet with violet flowers. Information to be given to the Worcester City Police.— Bow- street, August 16. Remanded at Chesterfield, Derbyshire, until the 17th instant, on a charge of larceny, ( property recovered) : THOS. WILMOT, a navvy, and a native of Plunger, Leicestershire, has relatives living at Bridgeford, Notts, 28 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, ginger hair, fresh complexion; dressed in moleskin jacket, vest, and trousers, lace- up boots, and cloth cap. Information to be given to Superintendent Oldham, Chesterfield, Derby.— Bow- stnet, August 16. Description of two men, committed to two calendar months hard labour for felony in Middlesbrough on the 15th instant: HENRY COOK, a labourer, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 9i inches high, brown eyes, fresh complexion, black hair, tuft oi hair on end of chin, proportionate build ; says he is a native of Bowstock, Oxfordshire, and served in the 8th Foot from 1859 to 1868, when he was discharged, branded with the letter ' D.' and ' B. C.'; dressed in moleskin trousers and coat, Guernsey frock, red woollen muffler, and black cloth cap. JAMES HUTCHINS, a bricklayer's labourer, about 28 years of age, 5 feet 4i inches high, grey eyes, fresh com- plexion, stout build, light brown hair, and tuft of giuger whisker on end of chin ; states he is a native of Fulham, Middlesex; dressed in cord trousers and vest, white linen jacket, lace- up boots, aud stiff felt liat.
