Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all appUcations in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MB. C. %* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor mast be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Remanded till the 7th proximo, charged with shooting at High Wycombe, Richard Davis, the night watchman to the Right Honorable Lord Carington, with an attempt to murder him : a man who gave the name of THOMAS WILLIAMS, a tailor by trade, states he is a native of New York, America, 39 years of age, 5 feet 9i inches high, black hair and eyebrows, brown eyes, dark complexion, loug visage, no whiskers or beard ; dressed in brown cloth overcoat, with brown velvet collar, double- breasted black cloth frock coat and vest, dark grey cloth trousers, white shirt, black beaver hat, maker G. Gould, 40, Blackman- street, Borough, and elastic- side boots, all nearly new; it is supposed he has been previously convicted of committing offences elsewhere. In- formation to be given to Superintendent Davis, High Wycombe, Bucks, who has a photograph of the prisoner, and can be seen on application.— Bow- street, July 31. On the 17th ultimo, the Body of a male Child was found in a field near Crockett- road, in the parish of Handsworth, in the county of Stafford, aud at au inquest held before Edwin Hooper, Esq., coroner, on the 16th instant, a verdict of ' Wilful Murder against some person or persons unknown' was returned. A reward of £ 50 will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person or persons who will give such information and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and con viction of the murderer or murderers, aud the Secretary of State for the Home Department will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice, not being the person who actually murdered the child, who will give Buch information and evidence as shall lead to the same result. Information to be given at any Police Station in the county of Stafford.— Bow- street, July 29. FORGERY. Absconded from the borough of Ipswich, on the 23rd instant, charged under a warrant with forging an order for payment and obtaining £ 12 10s. at Messrs. Cobbold, Bacon, and Co.' s Bank, Ipswich: JOHN STENNETT, alias ANDREWS, alias JOSLIN, a blacksmith, 35 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, blind with one eye ( supposed the right), much pockpitted, long flat nose, aud small whiskers ; dressed when last seen in old hairy cap, fitting close to head, and imitation sealskin jacket; he travels the country, and calls at shoeingsmiths' for work, generally turning horseshoes ; he also calls at large flour mills, as he is au expert hand at mill bills. Information to be given to Head Constable Mason, Town Hall, Ipswich, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- street, July 26. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person on Goodwood Race- course on the lst instant: a gold pair- case duplex movement Watch, cream- coloured dial, gold hands, had attached a gold curb albert Chain. Iuformation to be given at the Chief Con- stable's Office, Lewes, to Superintendent Pocock, Cuckfield or to Superintendent Pratt, Chichester. — Bow- st., August 2. ' Stolen from the person at Wakefield, on the 27th instant a gold lever Watch, No. 8592, white dial, engine turned case with shield at back, maker Fordham, London, on dial. A reward of 3 guineas will be paid for the recovery of the same. Also stolen from the person on the 27th instant: a silver lever Watch, No. 14545, jewled iu 3 holes, and extra strong Stolen from the person at Bat and Ball Fair, near Hails- ham, Sussex, on the 23rd instant: a medium- size Metallic Pocket- book, nearly filled with writing, and containing two £ 20 Notes and several £ 10 and £ 5 Notes, all of the Bank of England, and supposed to be of the following Nos. 29761, 29767, dated 20th May, 1872, 17460, dated 23rd March, 1872, the £ 5 notes supposed numbered 26805— 6— 7— and 8 ; also a Cheque for £ 10 6s., payable from Joseph Gorringe to R. R. Verrai; aud several pieces of Scrap Memorandum. Sup- posed by a man, about 22 years of age, about 5 feet 9 iuches high, sallow complexion, round full face, brown hair, cut very short, no whiskers or moustache, aud rather stout figure; dressed in a blue cloth overcoat, dirty drab colour trousers, black billycock hat, and a white silk handkerchief, tied loosely round the neck. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Lewes; to Superintendent Wag- horn, Hailsham ; or at any Police Station in East Sussex.— Bow- strect, July 26. Stolen from the person on the race- course at Worcester, on the 18th instant: a silver Watch, with gold hands, No. 28234, maker H. Lyons, Birmingham ; a silver Geneva Watch, with figured back, maker Vaceron ; a lady's gold Geneva lever Watch, No. 4481, maker Weatherley, Poultry, London. £ 2 reward will be paid in each case by the Head Constable of Worcester, for such information as shall lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the watches.— Bow- street, July 24. Stolen from the person of Arthur Spruson, farmer, on the racecourse at Albrighton, Salop, on the 22ud instant: a silver lever Watch, single case, spring broken, No. 549, maker Kemp, Wolverhampton. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Richardson, Wellington, or to Police Constable ( 9) Edge, Albrighton, Salop.— Bow- street, July 24. Stolen on the 22nd instant, from a lady, at the Preston Railway Station : a Purse, containing a £ 5 Bank of England Note, No. either 9388 or 3883 ; about £ 5 in Gold ; a pair of Ear- rings and Brooch to match, set in pearls and emeralds ; a mourning Ring, with inscription, ' In memory of Mary Jane Round, died 9th of March, 1866.' Information to be given to be given to Chief Superintendent Oglethorpe, Preston.— Bow- street, July 24. chief, black with white flower ; a woman's Shawl, black silk mixture; a pair of woman's cloth Boots, lace inside ; 5 lbs. of moist Sugar, wrapped in yellow paper; and a Pure* with a clasp and repaired with an old kid glove, containinf 2*.; entrance is supposed to have been effected by means of the fiont door, which was imperfectly fastened. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Between 1' 30 and 6 a. m. on the 28th instant the dwel- ling- house of Charles Welch, Royal Hotel, Nantwich- road, Crewe, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen therein : a Macintosh, very long, ' Charles Welch' written on lining ; a dark blue pilot Overcoat, has a fusee burn mark on shoulder; a pair of strong shooting Boots, patent fastenings on top ; a pair of men's elastic- side Boots; a pair of boy's elastic- side Boots, much worn ; a boy's mixture Jacket, much worn, and faded with the sun ; six Fruit Tarts in small dishes ; about 2 lbs. of Boiled Ham; a large Bass, about twice the size of a joiner's. Information to be given to Superintendent Laxton, Nantwich, or to Inspector Wood, Police Office, Crewe, Cheshire.— Bow- street, July 29. Description of JOHN STANLEY, a weaver , and a native of Newtown, Montgomeryshire, who absconded on the 21st instant, charged with burglary : between 30 and 40 yrs. of age, 5 feet 4 iuches high, pale complexion, thin face, high cheek bones, large mouth, pockpitted, black curly hair aud whiskers round the throat, and bald headed ; dressed in an old black cloth jacket and vest, white cord trousers, and elastic- side boots. Iuformation to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, or to P. S. Hudson, Newtown, Montgomery- shire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, July 26. During the night of the 19th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. W. L. Welsh, of Wilmslow- park, near Macclesfield, Cheshire, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : two pairs of men's elastic- side Boots ; two plated Salt Spoons ; a pair of plated Sugar Tongs ; and a black billycock Hat, with round crown and stiff brim. The offender is supposed to be wearing one pair of the stolen boots, as an old pair was left on the premises : a man of the following description was seen leaving the house about 4 30 a. m. on the same morning, a low stiff man, with large dark whiskers, withoutj coat, and was wearing a claret- coloured striped shirt, and a billycock hat ( supposed to be the stolen one). Iuformation to be given to Superintendent Williamson, County Police Office, Maccles- field, or to Sergeant Garner, Wilmslow, Cheshire.— Bern- street, July 24. Between 11 a. m. and 4' 30 p. m. on the 20th instant, the dwelling house of David Kendall, of Sandburn, in the town- ship of Stockton- on- the- Forest, was broken and entered and stolen therein : a grey cloth Coat, with black velvet collar ; a black cloth Waistcoat, with black sleeves ; a pair of Boots, with brass eyelet holes, and patent leather fronts. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Hunter, North Riding Constabulary Office, Heworth, York— Bow- street, July 24. Between 8 a. m. and 2- 30 p. m. on the 22nd instant the .... v..„ . a suver cottage at Cleveland- road, in the parish of Great Malvern, i, No. 14545, jewled iu 3 holes, aud extra strong \ was broken and entered, and the following property stolen 1 therein : a pair of men's black cloth Trousei- s ; a boy's black cloth Vest ; a boy's grey Vest; a black cloth Jacket ; an indian silk Pocket- handkerchief; an indian silk Neeker- HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Description of a man giving the name of SAMUEL EXLEY, alias ROBERT BUTLER, committed for trial, charged with stealing the Mare from Henddol, in the parish of Celynin, the property of Mr. John Owens, as advertised in the Police Gazette of the 31st ultimo : about 24 years of age, 5 feet 4i inches high, grey eyes, light sandy hair, whiskers, and beard ( small), fair complexion, high forehead, and scar on right arm near elbow ; says he is a native of Leeds, and belongs to the Militia. Information to be given to Inspector Jones, Police Office, Dolgelley, North Wales.— Bow- street, August 2. Stolen from Turncole Farm, on Southminster Marshes, on or about the 23rd ultimo : twenty- five half- bred Oxford Down and Kent Lambs, and six Kent Ewes, the property of Mr. J. F. Kemp. £ 15 reward will be paid for any informa- tion as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be giveu to Inspector Rutledge, Police station, Latchingdon, Maldon, Essex.— Bos- street, August 2. Stolen on the 22nd ult. : a dark brown Pony, 11 hands high, aged, and a varnished Cart, ' Roughton, Bailey Heath,' on off side. By a man, 28 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fair complexion, auburn hair and whiskers ( supposed since shaved); dressed in black pilot jacket, black vest, tweed trousers, black cap, and lace- up boots.— Matropoliic Police, R Division, August 2. Stolen from a field at Chiswick: a light bay carriage Horse, 5 years old, 17 hands high, switch taiL A reward of £ 25 will be paid by the owner to any person who shall give * such information as shall lead to the conviction of the offender and recovery of the horse.— Metropolitan Police, T Division, July 31. Stolen from a field at Priestfield, near Bilston, on the 17th instant: a brown Horse, from 14 to 15 hands high, aged, off fore hoof white, and near hind one white, small white streak on forehead, long tail, cut square, the property of John Bullen. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent McCrea, Police Office, Bilston, Staffordshire.— Bow- strcct, July 31. THOMAS MOFFAT, charged with cattle stealing, at Muirhead of Logie, in Forfarshire, on the 3rd or 4th iustaut : he is a flesher or cattle drover from Glasgow, 20 years of age, 5 feet 71* inches high, reddish brown hair, cut short, no whiskers, grey eyes, common nose, round face, fresh and clear complexiou, ordiuary make, aud smart appearance ; supposed to be dressed in blue coat, dark cloth trousers and vest, dark cloth cap with peak, coloured necktie, paper collar, and some- times wears a red checked cravat. Is well known amongst cattle dealers and drovers from his smart figure, aud attends most of the markets between Glasgow, Edinburgh, and the North of Scotland. Was convicted iu May, 1870. at Paisley, of a series of thefts by housbreaking at Renfrew, and sentenced to 10 months imprisonment. Information to be given to the Chief Constable of Forfarshire, Forfar; a warrant has been obtained for his apprehension.— Bow- street, July 31. A reward of £ 10 is offered to any person who slia'l give such information as may lead to the thief, aud the recoverv of the Horse and Van, stolen from Vernon Mews, Hammer- smith, on the 10th instant, and advertised in the Police Gazette of the 19th.— Metropolitan Police, T Division, Jukf 31. Stolen on the 20th instant, from a field situate at the Thorn, in the parish of Kingswinford : a dark brown Mare, about 15 hands high, 7 years old, with a small substance on the back, the property of John Brown. Information to be given at the Police Office, Brierley- hill, Staffordshire.— Boie- street, July 29. Stolen from a field at Horley during the night of the 15th instant : a bay uag Mare, aged, about 15'. bauds high, black legs, long switch tail, star on forehead, near- fore leg slightly bent over aud slight enlargement on one hock, corn in frog of near fore foot, and white speck iu near eye. Supposed by two men of the following description, one between 30 and 35 years of age, about 6 feet high, browu hair, no whiskers ; dressed in brown suit with dark stripes, aud round hat, has scars from cuts on back of hands, and has the appearance of a pugilist ; the other about § 8 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, light complexion a'ud hair, and small light whiskers ; dressed in a brown suit, and billycock hat, and has the appearance of a horse dealer; they were driving a pony about 13 bands high, broken winded, aud low cart. £ 10 reward will be paid for any information as shall lead to the recovery of the mare, and conviction of the offender or offenders." Information to be given to Superin- tendent Murtell, Surrey Constabulary, Godstone.— Bow- strect, July 26. Information to be given to Chief Constable Chipstead Borough Police Station, Wakefield. - Bow- street, July 31. Stolen from the Park Farm, Bridgend, in the parish of Newcastle, on the 18th instant: sis Calves, about 6 month* 2 August 2 old, of the Hereford breed, the property of Mr. Richard Jones. Information to he given to Superintendent Sadler, Constabulary Office, Bridgend, Glamorgan. — How- street, July 26. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Absconded from Hollin Barn, near Thirsk, on the night of the 26th ultimo, charged on a warrant with stealing^ si- Sovereigns, belonging to David Fraiser, his master : GEORGE DUNN a farm servant, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 1 c 2 inches high, light sandy hair, cut short, fair complexion, no whiskers or moustache, scar on upper lip, which he says was caused by the kick of a horse; dressed in a black velvet jacket, qid black vest, with a, new patch near to the lift pocket, fight woollen cord trousers, narrow stripe and fly fronts, strong lace- up boots with toe- plates, and black round billy- cock hat. He states that he M a native, of Preston, near Hull, living part of last year at North Park, near Beverly, and at Fridaythorpe, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, aud left there about 3 mouths ago. Information to hj given to Deputy Chief Constable Walmsby, Northallerton, or to Inspector Nicholson, Constabulary Office, Thirsk, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- stnet, A ugust 2. Description of THOMAS HILL, late Postmaster of Little Hulton, near Bolton, who absconded, and charged with embezzling ,£ 30, belonging to the Postmaster- General: he is about 35 years of < tge, 0 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fresh com- plexion, sandy hair, grey eyes, a cut mark pear one eye, aud has artificial teeth. Information to lie given to Superinten- dent Holland, County Constabulary, Town Hall, Little Bolton; a warrant has been issued, for his apprehension.— Bow- street, August 2. Description of WILLIAM MARTIN, file cutter, who has absconded from " Worcester, charged with embezzling cer- tain moneys belonging, to a Friendly Society, to which he wa- 4 secretary : hcis 29 yeara of age, 5 feet 5 iuchos high, sallow complexion, black wavy hair curled at sides, very full black eyes, clean shaved when last seen, short thick neck, stout built. Information to bo given tn the Worcester City Police, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, August 2. Description of RICHARD J. W. LADD, who is charged on a warrant : he is 22 years of age, 5 feet 8 ins. high, round shoulders, fair. complexion, blue eyes, roman nose, small moustache ; dressed iu grey frock coat, black trousers, and high black bat. tuformation to be given to Inspector Bailey, City of London Police, Defective Department, Old Jewry, E. G.— Bow- street, August 2. Description of JAMES IRVINE, charged on a sheriff's warrant with embezzling monies to the extent of £ 77, belonging to his . employer Mr. Michael Yates, contractor-, West Nile Street, Glasgow : a clerk, about 25 years of age. about 5 fpet 3 iuches ldgh, dark brown hair, reddish beard and moustache, and has lost a portion of right forefinger ; he resided in Canon- street, Glasgow ; dressed respectably. In- formation to be given to Chief Constable McCall, Glasgow, or to Superintendent Brown, Central Police Chambers, Glasgow.— B'mo- street, AugttSt 2. Absconded since tlief 20th ultimo, embezzling j£ 8, the money of his employer : a man, 23 years of age, 6 feet high, fair complexion, light curly hair, weak eyes, good- looking ; dressed in dark clothes, and is of gentlemanly appearance ; supposed to have gone to Salisbury.— Metropolitan 1' olice, E Division, August 2. Stolen from No. 4, Christ Church- terrace, Oxford, on the 26th ultimo: a gold Ring, set with garnets; and a lady's gold chased Ring, with vacant space for hair. Also from a bed- room at No. 3, Christ Church- terrace, on the 2/ th ultimo ; a gold plain mourning Ring, with inscrip- tion ' In memory of William Davey,' date and age inside ; a gold mourning Ring, set with pearls, hair inside ; a gold cameo Brooch, jet border ; a velvet Purse or Bag, containing a rosery, with silver Cross attached; and sundry old gold Rings. By a man, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark hair and complexiou, little whiskers ; dressed in black soft felt hat, when at work as a painter wore white slop, and corduroy trousers, otherwise wore a dark jacket, a travelling painter, a native of London, and frequents low common lodging- houses or beer- houses, much addicted to drinking ; stated he was going to Swindon ou the 28th ultimo, whent. be stolen property was seen in his possession ; will apply for work at plumber's, painter's, & c. Information to be given to Superintendent Head, Police Oflice, Oxford.— Bow- street, August 2. Description of JOHN BLAYNEY, a tailor, native of Newtown, Montgomeryshire, who absconded on the 23rd instant, and for whose apprehension a warrant has beeu granted, on a chargp of stealing a brass Tobacco Box and two Half- sovereigus, from the person of John Hall, Newtown : about 40 yeais o£ age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, very slender make, black hair,' aud small whiskers; dressed in old dark clothes, new li Inciter boots, rivetted bottoms, and black jim- crow hat; has been working in South Wales for some yeais, and has been traced gojng Southwards. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, or to Sergeant Hudson, Newtown, Montgomeryshire, who holds the warrant.— Bow- street, July 31. Stolen from an outhouse at the township of Harwoad Dale, on the 27th: instant, the property of Wilson Mead, farm servant: two pairs of light Half- boots, with brass eyelet- holes, patent leather up the fronts, one pair nearly uew, the other pair have been recently soled and have heel- plates on. By a man, a native of Norfolk, 21 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 Inches high, fresh Complexion, thin features, 116 whiskers, light brown hair, much sunburnt, aud slenderly built ; dressed in an old dark rough cloth jacket, cord vest, dark cord trousers, grey cloth cap, and old boots ; was convicted at Norwich, and sentenced to 4 calendar months' hard labour, for larceny, and was convicted at Northallerton Quarter Sessions, January, 1870, and sentenced to 9 calendar months' hard labour, for larceny. Information to be given to Inspector Ryder, North Riding Constabulary, Falsgrave, Scarborough. — Bow- street, July 31. Further and corrected description of JOHN SOUTH- COMBE, charged on a warrant with uttering a forged bill of exchange, advertised iu the Police Gazette of the 29th May last : 40 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, fair complexion, light hail", moustache, and whiskers, slightly bald, blue or grey eyes, small feet aud features, aud shows his teeth when speaking. Further wanted on a warrant for fraudulent bank- ruptcy.— Metropolitan Police, C Division, July 31. Description of JOHN BARRETT, who absconded from Beccles on or about the 23rd inBtant, charged with stealing three tame Ducks ( the property of Robert Clarke). lie is. about 34 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, walks erect, hav- ing served in the Royal Marines, from which he was dis- charged in 1868 as a bad character; has brown hair and whiskers, proportionately made ; dressed in blue Guernsey, dark trousers and cap, or white rouud slop aud light trousers, sometimes wears au old browu cloth frock coat. luformation to be given to the Police at Beccles, Suffolk, where a warrant lies for his apprehension.— Bow- street, July 29. Stolen during the night of the 26th instant, from a dwelling house at Bloxwich, near Walsall : two silver Geneva Watches, one numbered 1233 ; the letters ' E. N.' are engraved upon one of them, which had a round silver Guard attached : by a lodger in the hwise, a shoemaker, about 26 years of age, & feet 6 or 7 iuches high, dark complexion, has a substauce upon each side of throat, and a semi- circular cut mark upon right arm. He belougs to the 1st Stafford Militia at Lichfield, Information to be given to Head Constable Cater, Walsall, Staffordshire.— Bow- st., July 29. Absconded from Halesowen, on the evening of the 19th instant, charged with embezzling various sums of money, the property of the. couuty of worcester : MILES OVEREND, who has bean, during the Inst 26 years, Divisional Superin- tendent of the Worcestershire Constabulary, about 52 years of age, 5 feet 11J inches high, dark hair and whiskers, both turned grey, dark eyes, rattier small features, slender figure, and has lost some of his front teeth ; dressed in soft high- crowned black billycock hat, dark cloth jacket, g>- ey trousers aud vest, and occasionally wears an eyeglass; he is an Irish- man, well educated, aud a good writer. luformation to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Phillips, Worcester, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, July 29.
