The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marl:* of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as posiible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 51.93 FRIDAY, APRIL 26, 1872. Hlotiee.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may hear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MB. W. D. BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. *,* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an at tested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all letters addressed to the Editor most be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Found on the afternoon of the 19th instant, in a stream of water at the Hoppits, in the borough of Hertford, the body of a newly born male child, wrapped in an old dark blue and white broad striped cotton Duster, with ink marks upon it, supposed to have been a part of a window blind ; and an old piece of red faded curtain Lining, a portion of a brick was fastened to a cord, and tied to the body of the child. At the Coroner's inquest, a verdict of ' Wilful Murder' was returned ao- ainst some person or persons unknown. Information to be given to Head Constable Jarrett, Borough Policc, Hertford. — Brno- street, April 24. Found on the 14th instant in Mr. Champney's garden at Hessle : the body of a newly- born female Child, tied up in some old dress lining ; the child's legs were cut behind the knee and the legs doubled up under the arms. A coroner's inquest was held on the 15th instant, and a verdict of ' Wilful Murder' returned against some person or persons unknown ; from the medical examination it appears the child had been choked by a piece of woollen rag being thrust into its throat. Information to be giveu to Superintendent Ellerker, East Riding Constabulary, Welton, Brough.— Bow- street, April 19. Found on the morning of the 16th instant, in a garden ( at Normauby, near Middlesborough, adjoining a footpath leading from Normanby to Old Ormesby, the dead Body of a male Child, supposed about 5 days old, wrapped in a piece of yellow and brown mixture winsey belonging to a dress. At an inquest held on the 17th instant, a verdict of ' Wilful Murder' was returned against some person or persons unknown. Information to be given to Superintendent Simpson, North Riding Constabulary, South Stockton, or to Inspector Robson, Police Station, North Ormesby, Middles- borough, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, April 19. speaking, talks very excitedly, and of gentlemanly appear- ance ; dresses well, he is a Spanaird, and speaks very good English. Information to be given to Inspector Bailey, City of LondoD Police, Detective Department, 26, Old Jewry, E. C. — Bow- street, April 22. Charged on a warrant with forging and uttering a Post Office Savings Bank Notice and Warrant for the payment of £ 20, at Stockton : BENJAMIN COOPER, a foreman white- smith and bellhanger, about' 49 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark complexion, black hair, cut short and much inclined to grey, large whiskers and moustache, slender figure, aud stoops ; one eye ( supposed the left) is very weak, he is addicted to drinking, and suffers from asthma. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Booth, Stockton- on- Tees, Durham.— Bow- street, April 17. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person at Hambledon Steeplechase Races, on the 19th instant, i plain gold link Albert Chain, a bunch of small Keys attached. Infoimation to be given to Super- intendent Drew, Fareham, or Sergeant Byles, Hants Con stabulary. Havant.— Boir- street, April 26. Stolen from the person at Hambledon Steeple Chase on the 19th instant: a gold consular lever Watch, double case, jewelled in eight holes, compensation balance, engraved on inside case- -' Presented to the Rev. John Ellis by numbers of his friends as a token of their regard for his public pervices in Diss, September, 1862.' Information to be given to Super- intendant Drew, Hants Constabulary, Fareham.— ' low- street, April 24. Stole i from the person whilst at a I nurr and spell match at New Bellevue Grounds, Ovenden, a gold English lever Watch, engine- turned cases, plain centre, white dial, black figures, and capped and jewelled. Information to be given to Superintendent Ormsby, West Riding Constabulary, Halifax.— Bow- street, April 22. Stolen from the person at Bangour Steeplechase Races on the 9tli instant: A gold lever Watch, gold face, hands, and figures, sup- posed No. 22391, maker Bracebridge, London. A gold hunting J- pIate lever Watch, white face, black bauds, No. 9008, maker, Robert Bryson and Sons, Edinburgh, and ' 805 ' marked in ink. Also stolen by violence from the person, at Bathgate, late on same evening : A silver patent lever Watch, silver dial, gold hands, gold chapter figures, No. 44602, single case, engine- turned, much worn, had attached a piece of black silk cord for a Guard, and a brass Key, with ' John Smith, Watchmaker, Bathgate,' stamped on it. A dark leather Purse, brass clasps outside and inside, much worn, containing about 15s. in Silver. A Penknife, brown wooden handle, small piece broken off point of blade. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Linlithgow. — Bow- street, April 19. some pies, oranges, & c., were eaten by the men. One of the men is from 40 to 50 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, grey whiskers, no moustache, broad face, full features, bore eyes, lower eyelids slightly hanging down, showing the inner portion of the lids, which are very much swollen below the eye, and watery, slenderly made, of good address, and seemed to be well educated ; dressed in dark coat and vest, drab moleskin, cord, or light cloth trousers, and old black silk hat; supposed to be a man who calls upon confectioners, selling recipes for ginger- beer and cordials, and who is usually dressed in cord clothing. The other two men seemed to be young, not so tall, and dressed in light clothing, and caps or billycock hats. £ 2 reward will be paid for the apprehension and eon- viction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Chief Constable Beech, Bolton, Lancashire.— Bcnc- street, April 24. About 2 a. m. on the 20th instant, Stone Lodge, in the parish of Lower Beeding, Sussex, was broken into, and stolen therein : a black cloth Coat, with pockets outside on hipe, and one inside breast pocket, trimmed with braid ; a pair of brown tweed Trousers, nearly new, very large size round the waist. Supposed by a tramp, a young man, short; dressed in dark dirty clothes. Making his way into Kent or East Sussex. Information to be given to Superintendent Blake, West Sussex Constabulary, Horsham.— Bow- street, April 22. Between 11 p. m. on the 18th and C a. m. on the 19th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. James Parkes, ironmonger and grocer, Market- square, Shiffnal, Salop, was burglariously entered, and the following property stolen therein : a square tin Cashbox, about 6 inches long and 3 inches wide, brazed at each corner to fasten down the lid, and contained 17a or 18s. in Silver and Copper; also a common Brooch, gilt, which can be identified. Information to be given to Chief Superin- tendent Richardson, Wellington, or to Sergeant Barrett, Shiffnal, Salop.— Bow- street, April 22. The house of Mr. Frederick Collins, situate in Nursery lane, Harborne, in the county of Stafford, was broken into on the [ night of the 15th instant, and the folk wing propertv stolen therein : a Timepiece in ebony and walnut case, small silver plate in front with the words"' Presented to Elizabeth Rose,' engraved thereon ; a lady's Workbox, mahogany and oak,| with oak star inlaid on top ; a large Bible, bound in dark blue morocco ; a dark blue ribbed cloth Jacket; and six plated Tea Spoons. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Woollaston, West Bromwich, or to Sergeant Walton, Police Station, Harborne, Staffordshire.— Boic- tircet, April 22. FORGERY. ,£ 100 reward will be paid by tiie Leicestershire Banking Company to any person or persons giving such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of a man who uttered the undermentioned forged or false Cheques, viz. : a Cheque on Pares's Leicestershire Banking Company, dated 4th March, 1872, purportiug to be drawn by T. Whitaker, payable to Mr. Smith, for .£ 25, and bearing the forged in- dorsement of ' W. Symington ;' and a Cheque on the Leicester- shire Banking Company, dated 18th April, 1872, purporting to be drawn by W. Ward, payable to Mr. Fetch, for £ 85 10s. The first- mentioned cheque was uttered at the Branch Bank of the Leicestershire Banking Company at Market Harborough on the 8th ultimo, and the o'ther at the Branch Bank of the Leicestershire Banking Company at Melton Mowbray on the 19th instant. It is believed that both cheques were drawn aiid uttered by the same person : he is about 27 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, pale complexion, light brown hair and whiskers ; was respectably dressed iu black cloth coat with pockets on hips, dark trousers with narrow lavender stripes, and black deerstalker hat; had the appearance of a clerk. Information to be giveu to Chief Constable Goodyer, Leicester; to Superintendent Platts, Melton Mowbray ; to Superintendent Iliffe, Market Harborough ; or at any of the County Constabulary Stations in Leicestershire.— Bow- street, April 26. Charged on a warrant with forging an acceptance to a Bill of Exchange for £ 420: JUAN LUIZ PONCE DE LEON, late of 68, Mark- lane, and 36, Clifton- road, St. John's Wood, wine merchant, 26 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, dark hair, no beard or whiskers, dark auburn mous- tache, lound face, high cheek bones, sunken eyes, long blotched neck, walks very quick and upright, gestulates much when BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen between 1 and 5 p. m. on the 24th instant, by housebreaking, from Newchapel Godstone : a black frock Coat; two black Vest s ; a brown Coat; a dark mixture ditto, with pockets at sides ; a Vest of the same material; a pair of dark Trousers; a pair of man's new side- spring Boots; a small brown silk Umbrella; a black Shawl, embroidered with coloured silk ; a large Telescope, with day and night on it; and a pen Knife, with white handle. A man about 5 feet 8 inches high, dressed in a grey coat, having the appearance of a tramp, was seen about 3 p. m. entering the back yard of the house. Information to be given to Superintendent Murtell, Surrey Constabulary, Godstone.— Bow- st., April 26. During the night of the 19th instant the dwelling- house of Mr. Edward Harrison, on the Hemelhempstead- road, Watford, was broken into and stolen therein : oue salt Spoon, marked ' H' in old English ; one mustard Spoon, with ' H' in old English ; one tea- caddy Spoon ; two silver Castor Tops ; a gold Pencil- case marked ' Mordant'; a pair of silver Sugar- tongs, marked ' G. S. H.' in italic ; one green felt hat, Parisian make ; and one pair of gentleman's Shoes, elastic springs at sides.— Information to be given to Superintendant Isgate, Watford, Herts.— Bow- street, April 24. Stolen from a dwelling- house of a gentleman in Bedford- road, Tranmere, Cheshire, by means of skeleton keys, between 6 20 and 8 p. m. on the 21st instant: a gold Geneva Watch, No. 4757, ' J. Barlow' engraved on case; a lady's old- fashioned gold Guard, long and short flowered links ; a pair of small round gold Ear- rings, with ruby or garnet centres ; and about £ 2 10s. Information to be given to Superintendent Egerton, County Police Office, Birkenhead.— Bow- street, April 24. About 4 a. m. on the 22nd instant, a dwelling- house and shop in Bolton were broken and entered by a number of men, one of whom violently assaulted the mistress of the house ; he had on a green and black plaid shawl ( supposed stolen from the shop), thrown over his shoulders to hide his dress; HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen from a field at the parish of Belbroughton on the night of the 20th instant: a chestnut mare Pouy, aged, 14| hands high, white feet, stir on forehead, short tail, slightly lame and in good working condition. Information to be given to Superintendent Freeman, Police Station, Stour- bridge, Worcestershire.— Bow- street, April 26. Description of JOSEPH GURNEY, charged ( with others, since convicted), with stealing, on the 31st ultimo, a fat wether Sheep, the property of Mr. John Clare, farmer, Chesham : about 32 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark complexion, brown whiskers meeting under the chin, his right leg bends inwards, having been broken ; dressed in i long brown tweed coat with large pockets, white slop under- neath, cord trousers, and black billycock hat, and generally carries a basket; he is a native of Wigginton, Herts, and is well known in the counties of Beds and Northampton. In- formatiou to be given to Inspector Moore, Chesham, Bucks, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street April 26. Stolen from a field at Tedsmere, in the parish of West Felton, supposed on the night of the 17th instant: an ewe Sheep, marked ' R.' iu a circle on side with pitch, which i nearly worn off, the property of Mr. John Rogers, farmer. Information to be given to Superintendent Gough, Oswestry Salop.— Bow- street, April 26. Stolen from Coton, near Guilsborough, on the 19th inst, the property of Mr. John Adams : a bay cart Mare, 3 years old, 15 hands high ; aud a dark bay cart Mare, 4 years old, 14^ hands high, both well made, rather rough, and in good condition. Information to be given to Superintendent Bailie, Weedon, or to Inspector Williamson, County Police Station, Northampton.— Bow- street, April 24. Stolen during the night of the 16th instant : a roan- coloured milch Cow ( which has since been recovered) in the parish of Burton - on- the- Wolds, in the county of Leicester, the property of John Giles, and a warrant is issued for the apprehension of MATTHEW WARD, 24 years of age, 5 feet high, middle make, no whiskers, old fashioned face, a native of Costock, in the county of Nottingham ; dressed in cord or fustian jacket and trousers, smeared all over with clay, having worked in brickyards. Information to be given to Superintendent Hague, Police Station, Loughborough, Leicestershire.— Bow- street, April 22. Stolen from a field at Cound, Salop, on the night of the 17th instant, the property of Mr. Henry Instone, farmer : a fat yearling Sheep, marked on side with the letters ' H. Stolen dtving the night of the 12th Inst., from Foteshill . a dark brown Mare, aged, 14£ hands high, has lost one front tootii, long hair on heels, ami iu good couditiou ; a strong spring Cart, painted green, ' Michael Adams, Coventry,' on back, brass box missing from one wheel, aud a cork put iu its place, and has cross springs at back ; a set of silver- mounted Harness ; a set of brass- mounted ditto, with new hames ; a s. c of Thiller's Gear ; a pair of Scales, with set of iron Weights, from 7 lbs. down to 1 oz. ; a four- pronged Fork, ' M. A.' branded oil box handle ; a Sack, marked ' Robbins & Powers, Coventry,' containing about a bushel of Indian Corn; a pair of long moleskin Leggings ; a pair of black leather ditto, with spring sides ; a small twig horse Lever, bound round the top with wire ; an old horse ling ; and two old gig Cushions ; the property of Mr. Michael Adams The above have been traced to Leicester, iu the possession of a man about 35 years of age, middle height, fresh complexion, no whiskers ; dressed in blown or drab overcoat aila billy- cock hat. £ 2 reward will be paid on conviction of the offender or offeuders. Stolen from a fold in a field at Billingford, near Scole, Norfolk, on the night of the 10th instaut: five half- bred Down and Leicester hogget Sheep, marked ' D.' in black on near shoulder, the property of Francis Drake, Esq., farmer. £ 10 reward will he paid to any person giving such informa- tion to any of the Norfolk Constabulary as shall lead to the apprehehsion aud conviction of the offender or offenders, on application to Superintendent Ward, Police Station, Pulham, Harleaton, Norfolk.— Boir- otreet, April 17. Stolen on the evening of the 6th instant, from Portland- place, Marvlebone : a dark brown Mare, almost black, black legs, between 10 and 16 hands high, good action, aud in good condition; a set of Harness, almost new, initials ' J. C. S.;' and a dark greeu Van, picked out with light green, red under carriage, ' J. C. Saunders' on front of van, aud on the side, ' Joseph Charles Saunders, 11, Pouton- road, Nine Elms.' Any person giving such information as will lead to the recovery of the property, and the apprehension of the offender or offenders, will receive £ 5 reward. A - warrant lias been issued at Tunbridge Wells for the apprehension of WALTER HAMMOND, who is charged • with having ( being treasurer of Court ' Prince of Wale of the Ancient Order of Foresters, held at the above place, aud who had in his possession £ 91 in Money and the Books and Papers of the said Court) unlawfully withheld the same and absconded on the 17th instant : he is about 2iS years of age, 5 feet G or 7 inches bigh, stout build, dark hair, brown whiskers, blue eyes, flesh complexion, and Hushed cheeks ; he is a bricklayer. Information to be given at the Police Office, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, where the warrant is lying.— Bore- street, April 26. Description of a man for whose apprehension a warrant is issued on a charge of embezzlement: JAMES ESKDALE, a butcher, born at Annan, Scotland, 26 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, fresh complexion, rather stout make, oval face, and light brown hair ; dressed in billycock hat, grey tweed dress coat, vest, and trousers, aud shoes ; has several cut marks on his hands. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Blackburn, Lancashire.— Bow- street, April 2G. Absconded from Downton, charged with embezzlement: CHARLES QUINTON, formerly dairyman to the Right Honorable Earl Nelson, of Trafalgar : he is about 28 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, brown hair, very little whiskers,. and clean shaved nndu- neath the chin ; he has a brother in the Isle of Wight, and another iu America, and it issupjosed he will endeavour to make for America. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Wolfe, Fisherton, Salisbury, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, April 26. Description of W. H. J. BENNETT, charged oil a warrant, being the bailee of a silver Watch, did fraudulently convert the same to his own use, thereby stealing the same : from 35 to 40 year of age, 5 feet 11 inche3 high, dark hair, bald on top of head, dark whiskers and nioustache, shaved at chin, smart appearance, long pointed nose, and has an excit- able manner when talking ; a working jeweller to trade. He is likely to take a small < v and work at his trade. Infor- mation to be given to Chief Constable Stainsby, Central Police Office, Sunderland, Durham.— Boio- streci, Aw- H, 26. Description of two men who absconded from Hertford, on the 20th instant, charged with stealing a silver Watch atid a metal Guard Chain, from a lodging- house: they gave the names of CHARLES and WILLIAM ROFE : Charles is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 iiichds high, fresh fcOWi- plexion, brown hair, whiskers, and moustache ; dressed i" rt dark clothes, and a willey hat ; had a gathering on his fttbt' when he absconded, aud is supposed to be a pensioner. William is about 2 ' years of age, 6 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fair complexion, light hair, little ( if any) whiskers,; dressed in a light grey coal, light trousers, with a stripe down the legs, aud a cap. They will probably be found at some tramps lodging house in Hertfordshire Bedfordshire, or Oxford- shire. The watch was found pledged at Upper Edmonton. A warrant has been issued ( or their apprehension. Informa- tion to he given to Head C unstable Jariett, Borough Police, Hertford.— BoW- Sti\ it, Apri' 24. Description of FREDERICK FURNESS, wanted on warrant for stealing from the dwelling- house of John Lister, a Farmer, of Rathmell, near Settle, with whom he had be, en lodging, between 12 a. m. and 3' 30 p. ni, on the 21st instant.: five £ b Bauk of England Notes ; £ 4 10s. in Gold ; aud about 10s. in Silver ; and a blue pilot Overcoat, black horn buttons, velvet collar, and woollen \ laid lining : he is 32 years of 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, blue or ' grey eyes, chestnut hair, short and curly, full round facte, bo whiskers Or moustache, a labourer, and a native of Northampton, walks flat- footed with one foot through the ankle having been erushed, and is rather deaf ; dressed in a very dark niixttiTe suit, and when last seen was wearing tihe stolen Overcoat, hard black billycock hat, slight lace- up boots, and wears do stockings. Information to be given to Superintendant Cope- land, West Riding Constabulary, Settle, who holds a Warrant for liis apprehension.— Bow- street, April 24. Stolen from the dwelling- house of Richard Bentley, farmer, Biddenden, Kent, during the night of the 21st ilist.': a nearly new black billycock Hat, with white bone horseshoe buckle on baud; a red cotton pocket Handkerchief, with yellow flowers ; and an old red moroteco " leather Purse, dofr- taining 3s. Id. By a man who lived in the house as a v er for a week, about 28 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 liueU- s I'igli, dark complexion, hair, and whiskers, meeting under chin ; dressed in black monkey jacket, white slop under, cord vest, dirty moleskin trousers, heavy lace- up boots, I and the stolen hat; tattooed ' Jane J. F.' on one arm, and anchor on back of one baud ; he stated that he came from the Isle of Shappy, and had sailed from Whitstable to the North for coal, knew East Kent well, aud is supposed to belong to the Militia. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Morgan, Kent County Constabulary, Cranbrook.- Bow- street, April 24. Absconded from Flint, on the 21s( instaut, charged with stealing £: i 13s. 3d. from Dautel Maloney! JAMES McCANN, about 5 feet 6 inches high, liuht brown hair, liazel eyes, light red beard iind ittbustache, rather lht£ e head, and pockmarked ; he has been working iit chemical works, iu Lancashire and the North, as a furnaceman, and is likely to seek employment the ft agidti. Information tb be givfn to Superintendent Adams, or to . Sergeant Ward, Flint, North Wales, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, April 24. Absconded on the 16th instant, from the 2nd Stafford Militia, now on training at Stafford, stealing and taking with him a pilot Coat, a pair of Bedford woollen cord Trousers, a striped flannel Shirt, a drab woollen Shirt, and a felt billycock Hat: CHARLES DENNETT, or DENNIS, or RICHARD- SON, a native of Rugeley, a collier, and worked, before joining the Militia, at Wcdnesbury, 25 or 30 years of age, 5 feet inches high, thin sallow features, grey eyes, and brown hair cut close. This man is also a deserter from the Royal Marines. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Disney, Forebridge, Stafford.— Bow- street, April 22.
