CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received in cases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with. Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as pot able, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 5190 FRIDAY, APRIL 19, 1872. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may hear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may bo made and addressed to MB. W. D. BUKNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that on Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all tetters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War OiEce, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his anthoritr. INFORMATIONS MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Found on the 14th instant in Mr. Champney's garden at Hessle : the body of a newly- born female Child, tied up in some old dress lining ; the child's legs were cut behind the knee and the legs doubled up under the arms. A coroner's inquest was held on the 15th instant, and a verdict of ' Wilful Murder' returned against some person or persons unknown ; from the medical examination it appears the child had been choked by a piece of woollen rag being thrust into its throat. Information to be given to Superintendent Ellerker, East Riding Constabulary, Welton, Brough.— Dow- street, April 19. Found on the morning of the 16th instant, in a garden at Normanby, near Middlesborough, adjoining a footpath leading from Normanby to Old Ormesby, the dead Body of a male Child, supposed about 5 days old, wrapped in a piece of yellow and brown mixture wiusey belonging to a dress. At an inquest held on the 17th instant, a verdict of ' Wilful Murder' was returned against some person or persons j unknown. Information to be given to Superintendent, Simpson, North Riding Constabulary, South Stockton, or to Inspector Robson, Police Station, North Ormesby, Middles- borough, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, April 19. paid on recovery of the property and conviction of the offender or offenders. A gold op; n- face Geneva Watch, a gold link pattern Chain with Key attached; the key has a white stone on one side, and a black stone with a white mark across on the other side. A silver lever Watch, with gold figures,, the name of the owner,' Charles Gumbrell,' engraved inside, No. 7313. A gold lever Watch, enamelled face, with a snake- pattern Albert Chain attached, and two Seals, engraved with a beech tree. £ 10 reward will be paid on recovery of the property and conviction of the offender or offenders. Stolen from the persons of gentlemen at the Steeplechase at Thurnham, on the 4th instant: A valuable gold lever Watch, gold dial, No. 103, broken off at swivel. A gold compensation balance lever Watch, maker James Morley, Waterford. £ 5 reward on recovery. Information to be given to Superintendent Ovenden, Kent County Constabulary, Maidstone.— Bow- street, April 8. Stolen from the person on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th instant, on the Race Common, Warwick : A silver lever Watch, No. 2144. A silver Watch, ' C. Orton' engraved on the cases, maker Cleavey, Coventry. A small old- fashioned gold Watch, ' G. I. H.' engraved on outside cases. A gold scarf Pin, lound flat head, about the size of a fourpenny piece, with a diamond in the centre. A good reward will be paid in each case on the conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Head Constable Hickling, Warwick.— Bow- street, April 8. FORGERY. Charged onra warrant with forging and uttering a Post Office Savings Bank Notice and Warrant for the payment of .£ 20, at Stockton : BENJAMIN COOPER, a foreman white- smith and bellhauger, about 49 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark complexion, black hair, cut short and much inclined to grey, large whiskers and moustache, slender figure and stoops ; one eye ( supposed the left) is very weak, he is addicted to drinking, and sutlers from asthma. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Booth, Stockton- on- Tees, Durham.— Bow- street, April 17. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person at Bangour Steeplechase Races on the 9th instant: A gold lever Watch, gold face, hands, and figures, sup posed No. 22391, maker Bracebridge, London. A gold hunting f- plate lever Watch, white face, black hands, No. 9008, maker, Robert Bryson aud Sons, Edinburgh, aud ' 805 ' marked in ink. Also stolen by violence from the person, at Bathgate, late on same evening : A silver patent lever Watch, silver dial, gold hands, gold chapter figures, No. 44602, single c; ise, engine- turned, much worn, had attached a piece of black silk cord for a Guard, aud a brass Key, with ' John Smith, Watchmaker, Bathgate,' stamped on it. A dark leather Purse, brass clasps outside and inside, much worn, containing about las. in Silver. A Penknife, brown wooden handle, small piece broken off point of blade. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Linlithgow. Bow- street, April 19. Stolen from the person in Brighton, during the last few days: A gold hunter Watch, maker Frodsham, crack across seconds hand, v. iih a gold Chain attached, long links, having on it a Mordan's gold Pencilcase and a small Compass. An old- fashioned gold Watch, No. believed to be 1129, Judgment of Solomon engraved on back, with a lady s gold Chain attached. .£ 10 reward will be BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. During the night of the 10th instant, the residence of Captain Powell, at High Wycombe, Bucks, was burglariously entered, and the following property stolen therein : a Knife, Fork, and Spoon ( children's dessert), king's pattern, marked ' E. M. L. P.;' a set of ditto, with ivory handles, same mark; four Egg Spoons, plain pattern, crest— griffin's head; a small Mug, embossed, marked ' E. M. L. P.'— all silver; twelve Forks, king's pattern, marked ' H.' at back ; six small Forks, plain pattern ; six Dessert Spoons, king's pattern ; six small ditto, plain pattern, crest— griffin's head; six Tea Spoons, plain, same crest; twelve Table Spoons, plain, same crest; a pair of Sugar Tongs, plain pattern ; and six Table Spoons, queen's pattern— all plated; a silver Crimean Medal, with silver Clasp for Sebastopol, marked round the rim ' Lieut. F. Powell, 49th Regt., 1855 ;' and a Turkish Crimean Medal. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Aylesbury, or to Superintendent Sargent, County Constabulary, High Wycombe.— Bow- street, April 15. Between 9 p. m. on the 9th, and 9 a. m. on the 10th inst., the house of Elijah Leese, at Cellar Head, in the parish of Cheddleton, was entered, supposed by duplicate keys, and stolen therein : an old- fashioned silver verge Watch, with steel Chain attached ; a black cloth Vest, with glazed calico back ; a quart of Whiskey ; and K pint of Brandy. Informa- tion to be giveli to Superintendent Williams, Leek, Stafford- shire.— Bow- street, April 15. About 12 midnight on the 8th instant, a man of the following description was seen by Sergeant Broadbridge endeavouring to obtain an entrance into the premises of Mr. J. L. Edwards, the Common, Rochester, by a ladder; on the sergeant approaching the spot he was fired at twice, the shots striking an outhouse on the opposite side of the road : the man was about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, very pale face, black whiskers and moustache, shaved under the chin; dressed in deerstalker hat with flat top, black jacket or short frock coat, dark trousers, black necktie, and white shirt front. Information to be given to Head Constable Radley, Rochester, Kent.— Bern- street, April 15. On the afternoon of the 7th instant the dwelling- house of Mr. Richard Bennett, of Tylottin, Trefiglwys, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen therein : £ 10 in Gold, Is. in Silver, and 5d. in Copper; a Penknife with one blade aud white haft; two small box Keys, one a little bent; 1 lb. of Sugar, and a J- tb- of Butter. Supposed by a tramp who was seen in the neighbourhood, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark hair and whiskers; dressed in a dirty white slop, cord trousers, and jimcrow hat, speaks Welsh and English. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Newtown, or to Sergeant Owen, Llanidloes, Montgomeryshire.— Bow- street, April 10. On the 7th instaut, the waiting room and booking office at the London and North Western Railway Station, in the borough of Bolton, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen therein, which was made up in two small parcels : two gold hunting Watches, Nos. 52829 and 52802 ; four silver lever Watches, ' Samuel Brooks,' on the plate in- side, Nos. 33593, 33502, 14915, and 1807. The robbery is supposed to have been effected by a man, who has committed similar offences at three or four stations along the line, and always on a Sunday, when all was quiet : he is about 25 yis, of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 iiiches high, either light or brown hair, and no whiskers; dressed in a dark coat, with round laps, bedford or cotton cord trousers, which seemed to have been washed and worn a little, striped neck scarf, and soft or hard billycock hat. He attempted to commit a robbery at Ordsall Lane Station, Manchester, on the morning of the same day, but was disturbed, and is supposed to have come to Bolton by the 2' 10 p. m. train. £ 6 reward will be paid for the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the property. Information to be given to Chief Constable Beech, Bolton.— Bow- street, April 10. A dwelling- house in Oldham, was entered between 6 and 8 p. m. on the 7th instant, and the following property stolen therein : a lady's gold Ring, set with seven diamonds in a row, the end ones are smaller than the others ; a lady's g& ld Ring, set with four opal stones; a lady's gold Ring, with cameo figure ( a female), and set with pearls, was made in Geneva ; a gentleman's gold Ring, with onyx stone, ' J. W.' engraved thereon ; a gold Seal, with red stone, ' R. W.' engraved thereon ; a gold enamelled Brooch, set with four pearls ; a pair of Ear- rings to match, each set with four pearls, and small drops attached; a pair of plain gold Ear- rings, without drops ; a gilt Necklet Chain, with cameo attached, imitation a female's head ; an old verge Watch, with brass cases ; a .£ 10 Bank of England Note ; and three Sovereigns. .£ 20 reward will be paid to any person who will give such information as shall lead to the apprehension of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the property, or in proportion to the amount recovered. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Oldham.— Bow- street, April 10. Stolen on the 2nd instant, by housebreaking, from 23, Moore Park- road, Fuiham : a gold Brooch, filigree pattern, cluster of turquoise in centre, in morocco case ; a pair of gold Ear- rings, set with garnets ; a gold Ring, with ropaz stone ; a small round gold Locket, with miniature of a gentleman; a beaded Purse, gold drops at ends; a marriage Certificate, in the names of Novey and Eels ; a magistrate's Protection Order; and six Envelopes, with Mr. J. Ellison, printed on outside.— Metropolitan Police, T Division, A pril 8. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen during the night of the 12th inst,, from Foleshill: a dark brown Mare, aged, 14i hands high, has lost one front tooth, long hair on heels, and in good condition ; a strong spring Cart, painted green, ' Michael Adams, Coventry,' on back, brass box missing from one wheel, and a cork put in its place, and has cross springs at back; a set of silver- mounted Harness ; a set of brass- mounted ditto, with new hames ; a set of Thiller's Gear ; a pair of Scales, with set of iron Weights, from 7 lbs. down to 1 oz. ; a four- pronged Fork, ' M. A' branded on box handle ; a Sack, marked ' Bobbins & Powers, Coventry,' containing about a bushel of Indian Corn; a pair of long moleskin Leggings ; a pair of black leather ditto, with spring sides ; a small twig horse Lever, bound round the top with wire ; an old horse Bug ; and two old gig Cushions ; the property of Mr. Michael Adams. The above have been traced to Leicester, in the possession of a man about 35 years of age, middle height, fresh complexion, no whiskers ; dressed in brown or drab overcoat and billy- cock hat. £ 2 reward will be paid on conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Austin, Nuneaton, or to Inspector Olliver, Longford, Warwickshire.— Bow- street, April 17. Stolen from a fold in a field at Billingford, near Scole, Norfolk, on the night of the 10th instant : five half- bred Down and Leicester hogget Sheep, marked ' D.' in black on near shoulder, the property of Francis Drake, Esq., farmer. £ 10 reward will be paid to any person giving such informa- tion to any of the Norfolk Constabulary as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders, on application to Superintendent Ward, Police Station, Pulham, Harleston, Norfolk.— Bow- street, April 17. Stolen on the evening of the 6th instant, from Portland- place, Marylebone : a dark brown Mare, almost black, black legs, between 15 and 16 hands high, good action, and in n- ood condition ; a set of Harness, almost new, initials ' J. C. S. -' and a dark green Van, picked out with light green, red under- carriage, ' . J. C. Saunders' on front of van, aud on the side, ' Joseph Charles Saunders, 11, Ponton- road, Nine Elms.' Any person giving such information as will lead to the recovery of the property, and the apprehension of the offender or offenders, will receive £ 5 reward. Information to be given to Mr. Saunders, 11, Ponton- road, Nine Elms.— Bow- street, April 17. Description of a man charged with stealing from a stable at the Angel Inn, New Malton, on the 3rd instant: a black cart Horse, recovered, the property of Jonathan Hickes, of Stockton- on- Tees : he is a groom, a native of Lincolnshire, supposed Great Grimsby, 30 to 36 years of age, about 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, sunfreckled complexion, long thin face, narrow chin, prominent front teeth, with bad utterance, light hair, ginger tuft of hair on end of chin, slender figure ; dressed in a grey mixture shooting coat, white muffler, light- coloured trousers, imitation sealskin or hairey cap, patent leather leggings, and new strong shooting boots ; he frequents large horse sales, and is likely to be found in company of low horse dealers ; was traced to York, where he left tlie horse at an inn on the night of the 3rd instant, and absconded next morning, he is supposed to have gone into the West Riding or Lincolnshire. Stolen during tho night of the 1st instant, from a shed at Heath End, Farnham, the property of George Morris : a large light brown gelding Donkey, very old, long coat, and the hair rubbed off both shoulders. Information to be given to Super- intendent Newland, Surrey Constabulary, Farnham.— bow- street, April 10. Stolen from the stable of Mrs. Groves, Feather- bed- lane, King's- heath, on the night of the 8th or early on the morning of the 9th instant, a brown horse, rising 3 years old, hind fetlocks white, aud a blemish on the near fore fetlock. Whoever will give such information as shall lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders, shall receive 7 Guineas reward, on application to the Superintendent of Police, King's Heath, Birmingham.— Bow- street, April 10. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. A man of the following description is oharged with stealing a quantity of joiner's Tools ( recovered)) from unfinished dwelling- hou. se at Holywell Green, near Halifax WILLIAM, alias COCKNEY, a joiner, about 49 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, dark complexion, slight whiskers, and slender build ; dressed in dark mixture tweed jacket, black cloth vest, dark cotton cord trousers, imitation sealskin cap, and strong lace- up boots, with brass eyelet- holes and heavy nails. Absconded from Brighouse on the 6th ultimo, charged with stealing an Overcoat ( since recovered) : a stonemason, 19 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, cut mark on forehead, and medium height. Also absconded from Luddenden Foot, on the 31st January last, charged with stealing a quantity of Wearing Apparel ( since recovered): a female factcryhand, about 17 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 iucheH high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, slender build, aud fawn- freckled ; is well known at Bradford and Keighley. Information to be given to Superintendent Ormsby, West Biding Constabulary, Halifax.— Bow- street, April 17. Absconded from Ketley on the 13th instant, charged on a waiTant with stealing from his lodgings a round dark blue pilot Jacket, bound with braid, and a small black and red plaid Scarf, the property of Robert Kerridge, of Ketley, labourer: ALFRED DOLEY, a shoemaker, about 22 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, dark hair and monstacbe, whiskers shaved off; dressed in black cloth trousers and vest, and the stolen jacket and scarf. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Richardson, Wellington, Salop.— Bow- street, April 17. hair, whiskers on chin, small eyes, and regular teeth ; dressed in felt hat ( new fashioned), dark jacket with side pockets, perhaps a brown overcoat with velvet collar, small striped light trousers, double- breasted waistcoat, steps short when walking aud stoops a little. He is supposed to be in London aud is a native of Henley- on- Thames, Oxfordshire. Description of JOHN JEWISON, charged with stealing two £ 5 Bank of England Notes, one £ 5 Yorkshire Banking Company Note, and <£ 2U ill' Gold and Silver, which he was entrusted with to take from South- lane to Hull to his master, Mi*. Absconded from Newcastle- upon Tyne, < H Dike 20th ult., charged on a warrant with embezzling several sums of Money, to the amount of about £: itm : JOHN STOKOE, from 46 to 45 years of age, about 5 feet C inches high, rather florid com- plexion, redisn beard and whiskers, scorbutic marks on cheeks and upper lip, short square face, prominent cheek bone, light grey eyes, flat nose, rather turned up at end, square built, short legs rather bowed, has lost the end of right forefinger, short sighted, generally wears spectacles, and speaks the Northumbrian dialect. .£ 10 10s. reward will be paid to any person giving such information as will lead to his apprehen- sion, on application at the Manors Police Office, Newcastle- upon- Tyne.— Bow- street, April 15. Wanted, charged at Cockermouth ( with two others in custody) with stealing two sacks of Seed Oats, recovered : JAMES NICHOLSON, a labourer, and a native of Cocker- mouth, 28 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark complexion, grey eyes, dark hair, black bushy whiskers, meeting under chin,' stout figure, last resided at Cockermouth, and is single ; dressed in dark cloth slop jacket and vest, cotton cord trousers, black billycock hat, and strong laced boots. He may seek employment upon some railway in course of con- struction. Further information respecting GEORGE THOMAS, charged with larceny, as a bailee of a lady's gold Geneva Watch, No. '. 59654, who absconded from Talgarth, Brecon- shire ( advertised in the Police Gazette of the 1st ultimo): the watch has been found pledged at Dowlais, Glamorgan- shire ; he travels the couutry repairing clocks and watches, and carries with him a satchel of tools ; he lodged in January at No. 27, Union- street, Hereford, and was at Gloucester on the loth instant. Information to be given to the Chief Constab e, Constabulary Office, Watton, Brecon ; to Superin- tendent Evans, Crickhowell; or to Police Constable ( 18) Joseph, Breconshire Constabulary, Talgarth, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, April 17. Charged with stealing a silver lever Watch ( No. 34438, nearly new), and a silver pair- case Watch ( No. 7940), from his employer, Mr. Stringfellow, of Taunton, on the 4th instant : EDWARD MASTERS, alias MELBOURN ( right name supposed to be SPRAGGITT), about 28 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fair complexion, light hair, light sandy thin whiskers meeting under chin, light moustache, rather broad I fuw" 4, ua shoulders, and stoops a little.
