A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that hat been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horns for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 5161 MONDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 1872. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MB. W. D. BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. *„ » " Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen by means of housebreaking, on the 4th instant, from the house of Mr. C. Debenham, farmer, Ellough: a large old- fashioned tortoiseshell Watch, maker Fras. Colman, London; two electro- plated Dessert Spoons ; a silver Mustard Spoon, supposed to be marked ' T.' or ' D. a pair of Eye- glasses, silver- mounted; and a Purse, containing £ 2 8s. 6d. Information to be given to the Police at Beccles, Suffolk.— Bow- street, February 9. Between 10 a. m. and 4 p. m. on the 7th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. Wm. Weed, of Empingham, " Rutland, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a black rough cloth Overcoat, loose made, double breasted, velvet collar, twist buttons, two pockets outside, without flaps, nearly new, had a red silk handkerchief, with shell pattern spots on it, in the pocket, and an old- fashioned silver dump Watch, double cases, Roman figures, h^ is a bit chipped out of face. By two young men, tramps, one tall and slender, had on a cap, no whiskers, and the other short and stout, had on a black felt hat; both wore dark clothes, and one carried a carpenter's tool basket, with a piece of wire attached over his shoulder. Information to be given to Sergeant Rowland, Empingham, or to the Chief Constable, Oakham, Rutland.— Bow- street, February. 9. During the night of the 1st instant, the workshop of John Morgans, shoemaker, Forden, was broken and entered and stolen therein : a light pair of watertight Boots, foreparts hard worn, brass eyelet- holes, and the seam of the left boot has been torn. Supposed by tramps. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Newtown; or to P. C. Thomas, Montgomery.— Bow street, February 5. whiskers, and pockmarked; he was seen in company with several persons who came in Oswestry the same morning by train, and who had the appearance of low horse dealers. In- formation to be given to Superintendent Gough, Oswestry, Salop.— Bow- street, February 12. Stolen during the night of the 10th instant, from the dwelling- house of Mr. John Lunt, farmer, Walgherton : a light brown Overcoat, with dark velvet collar, lined with plaid, worn a little on one cuff; a grey woollen Overcoat, dark lining ; five men's white linen Shirts ; two black and white striped Shirts, one has a little red colour on right breast; a pair of men's cotton Drawers ; a pair of men's elastic- side Boots, much worn; and several pairs of Stockings. By a man who had been employed as a labourer at Mr. Lunt's since the 7th instant: about 25 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, sallow complexion, dark hair, no whiskers, speaks with an Irish accent, has an anchor on back of one hand, and other marks on the arm ; dressed as a sailor ; he said he belonged to the ' Rescue,' now at Liverpool, as a fireman. Information to be given to Superintendent Laxton, Nantwich, or to Inspector Wood, Crewe, Cheshire.— Bow- street, FebriMry 12. Description of CROSSLEY BOTTOMLEY, late a clerk in the employ of the Littleborough Gas Company, charged with embezzling various sums of money : 22 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, no whiskers or moustache ; diessed in a brown cloth overcoat, dark cloth jacket, light tweed cloth trousers, and black billy- cock hat; he was formerly a clerk at the Railway Station, Littleborough, and is a native of that place. A reward of ,£ 10 will be paid for his apprehension. Information to be given to Superintendent Brindle, County Police Office, Rochdale, Lancashire, who holds a warrant for his appre- hension. — Bow- street, February 9. figure; dressed in brown tweed coat, grey tweed trousers with black stripe down sides, and grey tweed vest, all much worn and soiled with flour, & c., black silk hat, and boots with elastic sides; carried a ney black travelling rug. He may proceed to Ottawa, British North America, where he has a brother residing ; a short time ago he was in the employment of Mr. Cowbrough, wine ; merchant, Boar- lane, Leeds, prior to which he filled situations, iu Glasgow and Dublin. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Fowler, Penrith, who holds a warrant for his . prehension, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carl , Cumberland.— Bow- street, Feb. 7. Absconded on tl 3rd instant, from Upper Gornal, Sedgley, charged with - nbezzlement : ISAAC THOMAS, late post master, about 1 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark brown hair, rathe thin, no whiskers, blind of left eye, has a glass one substitut ' 1, pale complexion, and pockmarked; dressed in a dark overo t, dark trousers, and black billycock hat, he walks with a qr k step, and it is supposed he will emigrate to America. ; formation to be given to Inspector Tomlinson, Police Office Sedgley, Staffordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehe sion.— Bow- street. February 7. Stolen during the night of the 27th ultimo, from Myatts Fields, Brockley- green : a red roan Horse, 7 years old, 15 hands 1 inch high, thick neck, thick black legs, small feet, black tail, shoes off hind feet, and a fast trotter; also a brown cart Mare, 10 years old, 15 hands high, white face, hind legs, and feet. Stolen during the night of the 3rd instant, from a field at Lambourne End, the property of Mr. James Clark, farmer: a black nag Mare, in foal, aged, about 14 hands high, long mane and tail, hind fetlocks white, star on forehead, and small white spot on right of rump. Also stolen during the same night, from a shed, the pro- perty of Mr. Phillip Taylor, farmer, Stapleford Abbotts, a light spring Cart, painted black outside and white inside. _£ 10 reward will be paid to any person who will give such information as shall lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders, on application to Mr. James Clarke, Lambourne, or Superintendent Simpson, Police Station, Epping, Essex. — Bow- street, February 9. Supposed to have been stolen from a stable at Walsall during the night of the 2nd instant: a grey Mare, aged, 14 hands one inch high, lame at the fore feet, and used to cab work. Charged with stealing on the 18th ultimo, from the lobby of an hotel in Coventry : two brown paper Parcels, belonging to a commercial traveller, containing a large quantity of Swiss Muslins and edge Works, used for trimming ladies under clothing: THOMAS HILL HENDERSON hand stiff; dressed in cord trousers, and moleskin sleeved waistcoat. Stolen on the 31st ultimo, from, a house in the parish of Meriden, a silver Watch, £ 2 5s. in Gold and Silver, and a pair of man's elastic- side Boots, with white buttons. Information to be LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Description of a man who sold a cow in Oswestry Smith- field, on the 7th instant, for .£ 13, during the absence of the owner, and immediately afterwards absconded with the money : he is from 30 to 35 years of age, rather tall, sandy hat trimmed with green ribbons. They disposed of a portion of the stolen property at Worcester, about the 28th ultimo, saying it was part of a bankrupt stock, the remainder is supposed to have been disposed of at small shops in various towns, ( see Police Gazette of the 24th ultimo). £ 5 reward will be given for such information as shall lead to the appre- hension and conviction of the offenders. Information to be given to Head Constable Norris, Coventry, Warwick, who holds the warrant.— Bow- street, February 7. Absconded on the 23rd ultimo, from Crown Wharf, Creek- road, Deptford, charged with embezzlment: a man, 30 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, stout build, sallow com- plexion, full round face, no whiskers, and dark hair ; dressed in a long dark frieze overcoat, dark ribbed cloth trousers, and high black hat with broad brim. It is supposed he will endeavour to emigrate to America. £ 50 reward will be paid to any person who will give, to Messrs. Courtenay and Groome, solicitors, 9, Gracechurch- street, London, such infor- mation as shall lead to his apprehension.— Metropolitan Police, R Division, February 7. Description of JOHN HUME TAIT, who belongs to Gatehouse, Kirkcudbrightshire; Scotland, a grocer's assistant, who absconded from Armathwaite, Cumberland, on the 1st instant, charged with embezzling £ 60, the property of the Armathwaite Co- operative Society, his employ ers: lie is 34 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, pale face, dark brown whiskers and moustache, dark eyes, dark brown hair, and slender given to Superintendent Waghorn, Hailsham, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 5. Description of WILLIAM SMITH and ALEXANDER HIND, who have absconded, charged with stealing Rope from on board the barque ' Nova Scotia,' lying in the river Tyne: Smith is a sailor, between 26 and 30 years of age, light hair, sallow complexion, grey eyes, about 5 feet 7 inches high, proportionately made, long face, proportionate nose, light whiskers, is a native of the Bull Ring, North Shields; dressed as a sailor with Guernsey frock. Has beeu previously con- victed of felony. Hind is about 28 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark complexion and hair, cut short across forehead, no whiskers, dull looking, deaf, stoops, and is a native of North Shields, but of Irish parents. Information to be given at either of the River Police Stations of North and South Shields.- - Bow- street, February 5. Stolen from a field at Davenport, on the 31st ultimo : an old black monkey Jacket, with two pockets outside and one inside left breast, a little torn at the pockets, the right one sewn up with white thread, the property of Charles Barber : by an Irishman, a tramp, about 36 years of age, 5 feet 6 ins. high, broad face, and deeply pockpitted; dressed in old clothes, cap, and an old jacket, with a patch on right elbow. Description of GEORGE STEVENSON, charged at Bradford with embezzlement: about 32 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, light brown hair, fair complexion, thin light whiskers, speaks rather quick, of good address, and was lately agent to the Burton Brewery Company; dressed when last seen in a grey suit, and light drab overcoat. £ 5 reward will be paid for his apprehension, on application to Chief Con- stable Granhan, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 5. Stolen on the 1st instant, from the dwelling- house of Sarah Troughear, Sullart- street, Cockermouth: a black Shawl with silk fringe, a pair of woman's elastic- side Boots, a female's dark grey waterproof Jacket, a drab merino Dress trimmed with green, a new unmade lilac cotton Dress, a print Dress with a harrow white stripe, and a black Botinet. By ft lodger, a factory operative, a native of Ireland, about, 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, sallow complexion, black hair, proportionate figure ; dressed in the stolen property ; She has been traced to Whitehaven. Information to be given to Superintendent Spencer, Cockermouth, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle, Cumberland.— Bow- street, February 5. Description of HENRY MASON, of Eccleshall, Stafford- shire, charged on a warrant with stealing 3 yards of dark striped Cloth, a pair of dark striped cloth Trousers, and a black bowler Hat, from a dwelling- house at Wombridge, Salop, on the morning of the 29th ult. : he is about 18 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, full red face, and black hair, which he - Wears over left eye; dressed in old black loose jaeket, light trousers with brown stripe down the sides, and clogs. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Richardson, Wellington, or to Sergeant Cox, St. George's, Salop, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, Februa& f 5; Absconded from Crickhowell, since August last, charged with being the bailee of a silver Watch, and converting the same to his own Use: REES PRICE, a native of Crick- hoWell, watchmaker, 23 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, light brown hair, inclined to curl, blue eyes, long face, fresh complexion, slightly built, hangs his head down, and generally has his hahd in his pockets ; dressed in a suit of dark grey tweed, and black bowler- hat. H « will probably call upon watchmakers to ask the price of things belonging to the trade, is fond of drink and boasting about his work. Has been regulating the clocks on the Great Western Railway about Hertford, and was last seen at Cardiff. Information to be given to Superintendent Evans, Crickhowell, Brecon- shire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 2. Absconded from Cockermouth, charged on a - Warrant with having at Brigham on the 18th ultimo, uttered, knowing the same to be forged, a receipt for the payment of money indorsed upon a promissory note : HILTON BEATY, 38 years of age, a farmer, native of Blenerhasset, Cumberland, 6 feet high, fresh complexion, long thin face, and sunken cheeks, grey eyes, light brown hair, slender figure, last resided at ElvaJPlaih; married ; supposed dressed in a grey tweed suit. ROBERT BEATY, 28 years of age, a farmer, native of Blenerhasset, Cumberland, 6 feet high, fresh complexion, long thin face, and long hair, grey eyes, light brown hair, slender figure, last resided at Elva Plain; married ; supposed dressed in a grey tweed suit. They left in company on the 27th ultimo, in company with two females, they may make for some seaport, to go to America or New Zealand ; they have a relative in London, and another at Newcastle- on- Tyne. £ 5 reward will be given for their apprehension. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Spencer, Cockermouth, or at the County Chief Con- stable's Office, Carlisle.— Bow- street, February 2. Stolen from Colworth Stables, Sharnbrook, on the 24th ultimo, a silver Geneva Watch, the dial is chipped at the figure ' 8 ', and seconds hands missing, attached was a silver curb Albert, with Pencil- ease ( without stone) at end ; also three pairs of groom's Trousers and two Waistcoats ( recovered). By a stableman, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark hair, small dark whiskers, and is a bad walker ; dressed in grey Stable suit and round billycock hat. He had a patent Clipping Machine in his possession ( stolen), by which he gets a living. Information to be given to Superintendent Carruthers, Police Station, Sharnbrook, Beds, who will pay all expenses.— Bow- street, February 2. Stolen on the 26th ultimo, from a house at Great Sutton, a silver lever Watch, maker Low, Chester, No. 6336, single engine- turned case, white dial, gold hands and seconds, and capped, had attached a gold Albert Guard, cable pattern : by a jobbing watch and clock cleaner, about 55 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fair complexion, grey hair, slender make, and the left ankle swollen ; he stoops, and is lame; dressed in a dark grey overcoat and coat, and black cloth trousers with patches on the knees. He carries his tools in a black bag with strap on his shoulder. Information to be given to Superintendent Egerton, County Police, Birkenhead, Cheshire.— Bow- street, February 2. Absconded from Whitchurch, on the 29th nit., charged with stealing a Concertina, the property of Joseph Williams ; CHRISTOPHER MULLER, a German, supposed from 35 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, small sandy whiskers on sides of face ; dressed in a dark grey Chesterfield coat, black soft quilted billycock hat, and an orange and black muffler ; he is going about the country tuning harmoniums, organs, & c., and repairing clocks and watches ; he may be found in public- house playing a concertina and singing. He stated at the time he absconded that he was going to tune the harmonium at Macefin Church, Cheshire, also to Sandy- lane, near Malpas, Cheshire ; had with him six concertinas, several of which are stolen, also one or more watches, & e. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Haines, or to Sergeant Heyward ( who holds a warrant for his apprehension), Police Station, Whitchurch, Salop.— Bow- street, February 2. to be given to Superintendent Hurst, Police Station, Peter- borough.— Bow- street, February 12. FRAUDS AND AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS. Absconded from Ipswiel? j- on the 5th instant: THOMAS PORLEY, a fish hawker, about 20 years of age, about 5 feet 1 inch high, stout build, full face, no whiskers, and hair cut short; dressed in a light cloth suit, and light billycock hat. Had in his possession a pedlar's certificate, granted for the Borough of Ipswich, No, 19£, which will expire on the 24th of April, 1872. Another man, whose name is unknown, is charged - With aiding and abetting James Harris ( now m custody), to obtain 153., by false pretences : he Is about 20 years of age, 6 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fresh complexion, thin face, and dark hair cut short; dressed when last seen in a blue guernsey, light mixture trousers, and Sealskin cap ; he hawks fish, Information to be given to Head Constable Maeon, Town Hall, IpsWicli, who holds a Vacant for their appfeheinsiofi. - Bow- street, February i2. A Woman of the following description is charged with obtaining Baby Linen and other goods by false pretences on the 1st instant: about 26 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, fresh complexion, fair hair, and proportionate figure ; dressed in a mauve dress trimmed with black velvet, black velvet jacket, dark hat, and black fall; speaks the southern dialect, and is of good address. Stolen on the night of the 22nd ultimo, from the shop of Mr. John Evans, Chirk, by means of breaking through the back window of the shop : a pair of elastic- side Boots, with buttons on the fronts, toe- capped and recently soled ; six woollen Shirts, two puce and black plaid, one black and white plaid, one lilac and white plaid, one dark puce plaid, one lilac plaid. It is supposed that the party committing the robbery may be wearing the stolen boots, as an old pair of Wellington boots have been found concealed in the garden.
