Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MB. W. D. BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. O. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor most be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. BOBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of Samuel Langford, of Much Wenlock, Salop, about 8 p. m. on the 27tli instant, while lying down drunk, at Coal Brook Dale : a verge Watch, German silver case, No. 868, maker Jasper Gregory, Basingstoke, aud ' S. L.' scratched on the inside of case. Information to be < riven to Sergeant Wyley, Madeley, or to P. C. Cooper, Iron- bridge, Salop.— Bow- street, January 31. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen from a fild, in the parish of Iffly, Oxon, on the night of the 27th ultimo, a brown Gelding, 3 years old, 14), hands high, just broken to harness, aud had a halter on, the property of Mr. William Ludlow, farmer. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Eernsby, Oxford, or to Sergeant Hawton, No. 9, Charles- street, Iffly- road, Oxford. Bow- street, February 2. Stolen by means of housebreaking from the rectory of St. Brides- super- Ely, near Cardiff, between 11 a. m. and 1 p. m. on the 28th instaut : a wash- leather Bag, containing a Cheque for £\ 4 6s. lid., drawn on the National Provincial Bank, Cardiff, signed William Ayres ; another for £ 7 16s., drawn on the same bank, signed C. L. Traherne ; two £ 5 Notes, of the Brecon Old Bank, old and dirty, Nos. not known ; about £ 30, chiefly in gold ; two small slate- coloured calico Bags, containing from 26s. to 30s. each, with a good many pence ; a 5- chamber Revolver, with ' George Webb, Oxford and a Ring, with blue and white stones. A man dressed in ragged clothes, tall and thin, was seen passing through the village at the same time. Information to be given to Superintendent Sadler, Constabulary Oflice, Bridgend, Glamorganshire, S. Wales.— Bow- street, January 31. Stolen from the tram]) ward, Dunstable, early on the morning of the 25th instant: a blue cotton Shirt; a sailor's red ditto ; a dark cloth Coat, no buttons; a pair of black Pants ; a pair of dark ditto, with blue stripes ; and a pair of sailor's high Boots, nearly new, the property of Isaac Harris ; also a dark tweed Coat, pockets outside ; a pair of mixture Trousers, stripe outside ; a sealskin cap ; and a pair of lace- up Boots, worn at heel, the property William Kennington. By four tramps, who lodged at the tramp ward on the previous night, and broke out the following morning : one is about 27 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair, small sandy mous- tache, and walks erectly; an Irishman ; another is 19 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, fair, and slender ; Irish ; another is 16 years of age, 4 feet 10 inches high, and slender ; and the other is 22 years of age, and 5 feet 6 inches high. Informa- tion to be given to Head Constable George, Dunstable, Beds. Bow- street, January 29. On the night of the 22nd instant the dwelling- house of Mr. John Smith, Stratford- on- Avon, was broken and enteied, and stolen therein : twenty- eight silver Spoons— one gravy, four table, and fourteen tea, two salt, and seven desert ; two silver pair of Sugar Tongs ; and one silver Butter Knife, marked ' J. S.' on the handles, some plain and others flourished. Information to be given to Inspector Lapworth, County Police Station, Stratford- on- Avon, Warwickshire.— Bow- street, January 29. Further particulars respecting the cottagc broken into at Minsterworth, near Gloucester, on the 21st instant, when lbs. of Raw Beef Steak, part of a Loaf of Bread, and J lb. of 0{ Biscuits were stolen. Supposed by a man about 25 years of age j dressed iu a dark blue sailor's coat and trousers, dark cloth cap, and wearing a pair of old boots without nails, excepting five round- headed nails on the outside of the tread of right boot, and eight nails on right side of tread of the heel of each boot, in two rows of five outside and three inside, also six nails in the right side of tread of left boot. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Griffin, Constabulary Office, Gloucester.— Bow- street, January 29. During the night of the 22nd instant, the shop of Mr. John Evans, grocer and draper, Chirk, was broken into, and the following articles stolen therein : six woollen Shirts, man's size, two puce and black plaid, one black and white plaid, one lilac anil white striped, one dark puce plaid, and one lilac plaid ; a pair of elastic- side Boots, with five white buttons on each fronts, toecaps, and recently resoled ; a Half Sovereign ; and 2s. 6d. in Copper , out of the till. Supposed by tramps, and wearing the boots, as an old pair of Wellington boots were left behind. Information to be given to Police Constable Dutton, Chirk, Denbighshire.— Bow- street, Jan. 26. On the night of the 21st instant, some person or persons broke into the stores of Messrs. Pearse, Richards, aud Co., engineers and ironfounders, at Newport, aud stole therefrom about 2 cwt. of brass Bearings, Valves, & c. £ 5 reward will be paid to any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the property. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Huxtable, Police Office, Town Hall, Newport, Monmouthshire.— Bow- steet, January 26. Between 6 and 9 p. m. on the 21st instant, the dwelling- house of William Smith Ringer, grocer, of Tacker- street, in the borough of Ipswich, was entered by means of skeleton keys, and stolen therein : about £ 20 in Gold and Silver ; a gold Geneva Watch, gold cases, has a dent in the edge, No. 87294 ; a gold curb neck Chain ; a gold Pencil- case, chased ; and a gold Locket, with hair, design Prince of Wales' feathers, all of which were attached. Information to be given to Head Constable Mason, Police Office, Town Hall, Ipswich.— Bow- street, January 24. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Description of JOHN BURRELL, alias FREDERICK HAWKES, JOHN SMITH, WILLIAM MAYHEW, HENRY SMITH, &, c., in which names he has been convicted, in different counties, he is a native of Wymondham, and is now charged with stealing a Pony in Wymondham, on the 15th ultimo, which he sold in Norwich : he is 30 years of age, 5 feet 4£ inches high, proportionate made, light brown hair, cut short in Yarmouth Gaol, small whiskers, meeting on the chin, fresh complexion, grey eyes, has been in the army, aud is marked ' D.' on left side ; dressed in grey coat, cord trousers, black chummy hat, sometimes dressed in black cloth, & c., is of slovenly appearance ; he frequents law beer- liouses, and is sometimes employed by horse dealers, or as a drover. Information to be given to Superintendent Barrett, Wymond- ham, Norfolk, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 2. Stolen, from a field at Earl's Common, in the parish of Himbletou, on the night of the 17th instant, a dark- brown Cart- Horse, aged, about 14 hands high, with a white streak down the forehead, the property of John Gibbs. Information to be given to Superintendent Bevan, Police Station, Broms- grove, Worcestershire.— Bow- street, January 29. Stolen from Woore, Salop, on the 20th instaut, a white Horse, aged, about 14 hands 3 inches high, lately clipped except inside of thighs, cracked heels, hair rubbed off by breachband, and iu good condition ; a set of Harness ; a pair of old Reins; an old hackney Bridle and curb Bit; a Horse Rug, yellow and black stripes, and a burn mark on it ; and two Halters; the property of William Sandleach and Joseph Chester, of Woore, dealers. Also, at same time and place, a plain spring Cart, painted dark blue, wheel mark on top rail, ends of shafts beaded downwards, and patent axle, the property of Samuel Lewis, dealer, of Woore. Information to be given to Sergeant Howells, Market Drayton, or to Superintendent Haines, Whitchurch, Salop.— Bow- st., January 24. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Absconded from Crickhowell, since August last, charged with being the bailee of a silver Watch, aud converting the same to his own use : REES PRICE, a uative of Crick- howell, watchmaker, 23 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, light brown hair, inclined to curl, blue eyes, long face, fresh complexion, slightly built, hangs his head down, and generally has his hand in his pockets ; dressed in a suit of dark grey tweed, and black bowler hat. He will probably call upon watchmakers to ask the price of things belonging to the trade, is fond of drink and boasting about his work. Has been [ regulating the clocks on the Great Western Railway about Hertford, and was last seen at Cardiff. Information to be given to Superintendent Evans, Crickhowell, Brecon- shire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 2. Absconded from Cockermouth, charged on a warrant with having at Brigham on the 15th ultimo, uttered, knowing the same to be forged, a receipt for the payment of money indorsed upon a promissory note : HILTON BEATY, 38 years of age, a farmer, native of Blenerhasset, Cumberland, 6 feet high, fresh complexion, long thin face, and sunken cheeks, grey eyes, light brown hair, slender figure, last resided at Elva Plain; married ; supposed dressed in a grey tweed suit. ROBERT BEATY, 28 years of age, a farmer, native of Blenerhasset, Cumberland, 6 feet high, fresh complexion, long thin face, and long hair, grey eyes, light brown hair, slender figure, last resided at Elva Plain; married ; supposed dressed in a grey tweed suit. They left in company on the 27th ultimo, in campany with two females, they may make for some seaport, to go to America or New Zealand ; they have a relative in London, and another at Newcastle- on- Tyne. £ 5 reward will be given for their apprehension. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Spencer, Cockermouth, or at the County Chief Con- stable's Office, Carlisle.— Bow- street, February 2. Stolen from Colworth Stables, Sharnbrook, on the 24th ultimo, a silver Geneva Watch, the dial is chipped at the figure : 8 ', and seconds hands missing, attached was a silver curb Albert, with Pencil- case ( without stone) at end ; also three pairs of groom's Trousers and two Waistcoats ( recovered). By a stableman, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark hair, small dark whiskers, and is a bad walker ; dressed in grey stable suit and round billycock hat. He had a patent Clipping Machine iu his possession ( stolen), by which he gets a living. Information to be given to Superintendent Carruthers, Police Station, Sharnbrook, Beds, who will pay all expenses.— Bow- street, February 2. Stolen on the 26th ultimo, from a house at Great Sutton, a silver lever Watch, mmer Low, Chester, No. 6336, single engine- turned case, white dial, gold hands and seconds, and capped, had attached a gold Albert Guard, cable pattern : by a jobbing watch and clock cleaner, about 55 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fair complexion, grey hair, slender make, and the left ankle swollen; he stoops, and is lame ; dressed in a dark grey overcoat and coat, and black cloth trousers with patches on the knees. He carries his tools in a black bag with strap on his shoulder. Information to be given to Superintendent Egerton, County Police, Birkenhead, Cheshire.— Bow- street, February 2. Absconded from Whitchurch, on the 29th ult., charged with stealing a concertina, the property of Joseph Williams ; CHRISTOPHER MULLER, a German, supposed from 35 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, small sandy whiskers on sides of face ; dressed in a dark grey Chesterfield coat, black soft quilted billycock hat, and an orange and black muffler ; he is going about the country tuning harmoniums, organs, & c., and repairing clocks and watches ; he may be found in public- house playing a concertina and singing. He stated at the time he absconded that he was going to tune the harmonium at Macefin Church, Cheshire, also to Sandy- lane, near Malpas, Cheshire ; had with him six concertinas, several of which are stolen, also one or more watches, & c. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Haines, or to Sergeant Heyward ( who holds a warrant for his apprehension), Police Station, Whitchurch, Salop.— Bow- street, February 2. JOSEPH DAW, charged with fraud, formerly a master butcher in High- street, Notting- hill; last known address in 1866, No. 57, Allerton- street, Hoxton ; was driving a cab in 1869 ; is about 65 years of age, grey hair and whiskers, tall, probably rather thin, aud stooping. A reward of £ 20 will be paid on his apprehension. Information to be given to Messrs. Humphreys aud Morgan, Solicitors, Giltspur Chambers, Hol- boru Viaduct, London, or to Inspector Bailey, City of London Police, Detective Department, 26, Old Jewry, E. C.— Bow- street, January 31. Absconded on the morning of the 29th instant from Wombridge, near Oaken Gates, Salop : a youth, 18 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, full red face, black hair, which he wears over left eye ; dressed in old black loose jacket, light trousers with brown stripe down the sides, and clogs ; stated he was a native of Eccleshall, Staffordshire; charged with with stealing three yards of dark striped Cloth, a pair of dark striped cloth Trousei's, and a black bowler Hat, the property of Mr. John Edwards, in whose employ he had been about a week ; he has a shuffling gait and stoops when walking; wearing the stolen hat. Information to be given to Sergeant Cox, County Constabulary Office, Saint Georges, Shropshire. — Bow- street, January 31. Description of the two men who stole two sets of Harness ( since recovered), from the premises of Mr. William Bake, of Hooton, between 9 p. m. on the 19th and 6 a. m. on the 20th instant, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 24th instant, apprehended on the above charge, and remanded till the 1st proximo : JOSEPH CHATTERLEY, alias CHARLES KING, a native of Birmingham, omnibus driver, 23 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, pale complexion, short black whiskers down sides of face, black hair cut short, dark grey eyes, stout build, good teeth, long white scar on right arm, two dots and ' P.' on left arm ; dressed in grey tweed double- breasted vest, grey tweed trousers with fly fronts, dark tweed shooting coat, blue pilot overcoat, velvet collar, four pockets in front, low- crowned broad brimmed billycock hat, and elastic- side boots. THOMAS CANARAN, alias TRAPEZE TOM, formerly a trapeze performer with Messrs. Howes and Cushing's circus, but latterly an omnibus driver, 27 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, pale complexion, round face, dark brown imperial, black hair parted down the centre, grey eyes, bad teeth, small scar on right eyelid, deep scar from centre of eyes to right of fore- head, scar on nose, having been split open, right foot deformed, caused by falls when performing in the above circus at Dundee about the year 1S67 ; dressed in daik grey tweed trousers, dark brown vest with two rows of pockets, brown cloth shooting coat, dark cloth overcoat with velvet 9 collar, all much worn, elastic- side boots, and round billycock hat. Information to be giveu to Superintendent Egerton, Comity Constabulary Office, Birkenhead. — Bow- street, January 31. Absconded from Saint Ives, Hunts, on the 22nd instant, ARTHUR STOCKINGS, drover, of Ipswich, charged with stealing a banker's Cheque aud Order for £ 14 : he is about 27 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark hair and com- plexion, slightly pockpitted, nose has been broken, and scar und" r one eye ; he travels about to stock markets aud fairs. Information to be given to Superintendent Spencer, Saint Ives, Hunts, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bmc- street, January 31. Stolen, about 9 p. m. on the 25th iustant; from a travelling jeweller iu a railway train, between Patricroft aud Ordsal- lane Railway Stations, Salford : a large gold centre seconds stop Watch," makers ' Harris and Co., Manchester, No. 3258 ;' a gold lever Watch, gold dial, makers ' Harris, Wise, and Co., Manchester, No. 3631 ;' and a gold lever Watch, double sunk cream- coloureu dial, makers ' Harris, Wise, and Co, Man- chester, No. 3632.' By four men : one is about 28 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, light complexion, and beard on end of chin ; dressed in dark suit and velvet hat; another is about Q& jzeais of age, 0 feet. 5_ or 6 inches high, dark complexion, and" stout make ; dressed in a grey striped shooting coat and silk hat; aud the other two were middle aged, well dressed, and wore silk hats. The four men got into the train at Warrington, and induced the jeweller to expose his stock for sale, and when showing the watches, one of the men knocked him down, and all escaped from the carriage, taking the pro- perty with them. They had been attending Warrington Horse Fair. Information to be given to Superintendent Williams, Chief Constable's Office, Salford, Lancashire.— Bow street, January 29. Absconded from Bicester, Oxon, on the 26th instant, charged with stealing a sack of Wheat ( since recovered) : JOSEPH HANDCOCK, of Bicester, labourer, 26 years of age, 5 feet C inches high, and light complexion ; dressed in a dark coat, white slop underneath, and dark cap ; and THOS. BOWERS, a labourer, 17 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, and dark complexion ; dressed in dark clothes and black billycock hat. They are likely to enlist. Information to be given to Superintendent Midden, Bicester, Oxon, who holds a warrant for their apprehension.— Bow- street, January 29. Description of a man charged with having, on the 23rd nltimo, broken open a safe in the pawnshop of Mr. Daniel Hegarty, Paul- street, Cork, and stole therefrom a large amount of Money, Watches, Rings, & c. : THOMAS PRIOR ( name supposed to be fictitious), 35 or 40 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, curly black hair, dark eyes, dark sallow complexion, pug nose, stout make, large hands, peculiar cast in one eye, which looks inwards and shows the white, and heavy lips, particularly the under ; dressed iu a black suit, and black silk hat, much worn, having a glazed appearance, and narrow straight brim; has the appearance of an American, having been iu America, but was probably born and reared in England ; had a large American trunk, and is supposed to have a laige amount of money and jewellery iu his possession. Information to be given to Sub- Inspector Gun, city of Cork.— Bow- street, January 29. Absconded from Leeds on the 16th instant, charged on a warrant with embezzment: SAMUEL EXLEY, commission agent, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, light brown hair and whiskers, fair complexion, medium bui d, his left foot is about three sizes less than the light, and has a peculiar walk on that account, aud stoops a little ; dressed in a light Scotch tweed suit, brown overcoat, aud hard black billycock hat. Supposed he is about to leave the country. Information to be given to Superintendent Hunt, Central Police Office, Town Hall, Leeds, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, January 26. Description of GEORGE WOOD, charged with embezzle- ment at Canterbury : about 28 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, stout build, full face, no whiskers or moustache ; usually dressed in a white slop and cap ; lately kept the ' Maid of Kent' public- house in the Black Friars, Canterbury. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Davies, Canterbury, Kent, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, January 26. Absconded from Chesham, Bucks, on the 19th instant, charged with stealing the sum of £ 91 4s. 9d., the property of his master Mr. Charles Plato : JOHN HERLING, by trade a leather cutter, 40 years of age ( looks younger), 5 feet 8 inches high, brown liair, light brown whiskers, beard, and moustache, walks very erect, and of respectable appearance ; dressed when he absconded iu dark brown coat, pockets at sides, grey tweed trousers and waistcoat, and black hard felt billycock hat. Property stoieu included a cheque for £ 15 Is. 3d., backed ' John Chubb, of Leighton,' he also took a red leather Pocket- book, containing orders. He has been to America, and it is likely he will again make for that country. £ 5 reward will be paid for his apprehension, and 10 per cent, on the amount of property recovered. A warrant is issued for his apprehension. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Moore, Chesham, Bucks.— Bow- street, January 26. Description of ANN WHITEHEAD, charged ou a warrant with stealing from her lodgings iu Brighton, on the 20th instant, two Blankets, a pair of Sheets, a feather Pillow, and a flat Iron : she is about 40 years of age, middle height, stout make, pale full face, nearly black hair, dark eyes, ana rather flat nose ; her husband is a navvy or labourer. She is supposed to have gone to London ; has a pedlar's certificate, and hawks lace, cotton, needles, & c. Information to be given to Chief Constable White, Brighton, Sussex.— Bow- street, January 24. Stolen from a house at Shenfield, on the 18th instant: a hand of boiled Pork, 4 lbs. of salt Pork, two Loaves of home- baked Bread, and a currant Cake. By two tramps of the following description : one is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, aud dark hair, whiskers, and moustache ; dressed in dark overcoat, light trousers, and round felt hat ; the other is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, and stout appearance; dressed in dark clothes and felt hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Bridges, Brent- wood Station, Essex.— Bow- street, January 24. walks erect : dressed iu brown overcoat, and high- crown hat, had on his finger a large gold ring, with blue or green stone, aud laige gold albert chain ; he hawks the country with another man and a lad, a bay horse aud dogcart, selling fan's .- tkiuH, silks, aud pieces of cloth, aud states they are of superior quality, which they are not; be also states he is the sou of Captain Walker, of Harwich, Essex, lias a hawker's licence, and is supposed to have come from Norwich. Infor- mation to be given to Head Constable Mason, Police Office, Town Hall, Ipswich, who holds a warrant for his apprehen- sion.— Bow- street, January 31. Charged on warrant with conspiracy and offences against the Bankruptcy Act : JOHN BAKER, late foreman to John Ford, Government Conn- actor, Woolwich Arsenal ; about 55 years of age, 5 feet 8' inches high, light brown hair, little whiskers, fair com- piexiuu, round led face, several upper front teeth delioievit, round shouldered, stoops, and carries his left hand in grousers portefc; rh- essen in dark clothes and high hut. And PRUDENCE MOODY, alias REECE, ^ yrs.^£. ^ e, middle height, fair hair and complexion, has a peculiar way of closing her eyes ( which are rather weak) when speaking, dresses respectably, usually wears a black velvet mantle, aud dark bonnet, with red flowers. Information to be given to Inspector Bailey, City of Lsmdou I Police, Detective Department, 26, Old Jewry, E. C.— YJ'OW- ' street, January 29. Description of LISTER LUSTED, charged with obtaining £ 1 by false pretences : about 28 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, light complexion, no whiskers, has lost front teeth, moustache over the lip, sharp thin features, is a practical horse clipper, speaks remarkably sharp, says he is a native of Tunbridge Wells, aud well known in the London and country livery stables; dressed in a light tight fitting suit, buttoued boots, aud bowler hat. He is supposed to be either in Wilts, Hants, Surrey, or Kent.
