Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to ME. C. *„• Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all betters addressed to the Editor most be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. < On the morning of the 21st ultimo, a burglary was com- mitted at a public- house on Cheshunt Common, Hertfordshire, bv a man who was arrested close to the spot by a police constable of the Y Division, and in the course of a struggle the constable was seriously stabbed in a number of places by the man, who escaped : he is from 28 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, fair complexion, light hair, light sandy whiskers, beard, and moustache ; dressed in light coat and trousers, and was wearing a stiff felt billycock hat with round top ( now in possession of police) ; will probably have bruises on his left arm and on his head ; he carried away with him a dark grey tweed cloth Waistcoat and a snake- pattern Abyssinian gold Chain, with common Locket attached. £ r> t) reward will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person who will give such information as shall lead to the apprehension of the said offender. Information to be given to Superintendent Williamson, Detective Department, Great Scotland- yard, S. W., or at any of the Metropolitan Police Stations.— Bow- street, January 5. The body of a newly born female child was found dead in the river Avon, on the 31st ultimo, perfectly nude, with a piece of tape which had the appearance of an apron string, tied tightly round the neck of the child, thereby causiug death. A verdict of wilful murder has been returned by the coroner's jury, against some person or persons unknown. Informatiou to be given to Superintendent Rowley, Borough Police Office ; or to Inspector Lapworth, County Police Office, Stratford- upon- Avon.— Bow- street, January 5. The dead body cf a female child, apparently about two days old, was found in Longford- street, Heywood, on the morning of the 8tli ultimo, wrapped in a piece of coarse white linen, two pieces of black faded cotton umbrella cover, and a piece'of old black skirting. At the coroner's inquest a verdict of ' Wilful mnrder against some person or persons unknown' was returned, and Her Majesty's Government offers a reward of £ 50 to any person who will give such information and evidence as shall lead to the conviction of the murderer or murderers, and the Secretary of State will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice, not being the actual murderer, who will give such evidence as shall lead to the like result. Information to be given to the Chief Constable of Lancashire, Preston, or to the Superinten- dent of the County Police, Bury, Lancashire.— Bow- street, January 1. be given to Superintendent Hayes, Police Station, Windsor, Surrey.— Bow- street, January 1. Stolen from the person of Mr. William Cragg, farmer, of West Fields Farm, near St. Albans, Herts, on the evening of the 16th instant: a silver lever Watch, maker's name John Cragg, No. 8, Northampton- square, Clerkenwell; part of a gold albert Chain ; .£ 3 in Gold; and some loose silver and copper Money. By two men who waylaid him ; one was tall, the other short and respectably dressed. £ 20 reward will be paid for the recovery of the property and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Isgate, Police Station, Watford, Herts.— Bow- street, December 26. Stolen on the 18tli instant, from the person : a gold key- less hunting Watch, maker Webster, Cornhill, illuminated initials ' CJB' in monogram outside case.— Metropolitan Police, £ Division, December 22. FORGERY. Description of MONTAGUE C. BURNEY, a clerk, charged with uttering two forged Cheques for £ 25, and £ 150 respectively, with intent to defraud, iu the City of London : about 20 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, brown hair, dark eyes fair complexion, a native of Droxford, Hants, deserted from the Royal Horse Artillery at Woolwich iu October last, is well educated, can speak French, and is in the habit of frequenting billiard Rooms and speaking of his connection with high families. A warrant is issued for his apprehension. Information to be given to Inspector Bailey, City of London Police, Detective Department, No. 26, Old Jewry, E. C.— Bow- street, January 5. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from a woman in Windsor, on the 30th ultimo : a £ 5 Bank of England Note, No. 43862. Information to BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. During the night of the 3rd instant, the residence of Mr. William Wainwright, Esq., of Hoe Place, Woking, was entered, between 8 and 9 p. m., and the following Property stolen therein : a gold Watch, enamel gold face ; a gold Geneva Watch, white face ; a mosaic Brooch ; a Brooch, enamel and pearls about 50 round; an amethyst Locket, twelve pearls round ; two amethyst Brooches ; a large peari Brooch, in the shape of a pie; a silver Card Case ; a lady's Travelling Bag, plated fittings; an emerald Bracelet, set round with twelve pearls ; an elastic gold_ Bracelet, five pearls across and three at the end ; a gold Bracelet, with turquoise stone ; a pearl Ring, five large pearls and ruby centre. In- formation to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Barker, Surrey Constabulary, Guildford.— Bow- street, January 5. Further particulars respecting the robbery at Matthew Mortimer's, of Manningford Bohun, on the 16th ult. ( adver- tised in the Police Gazette of the 18th ultimo) : several articles of clothing worn by the man who committed the robbery has been found a short distance from the house, con- sisting of an old dirty light brown chesterfield coat, pocket at each side, and one outside left breast, brown velvet collar, fly front, and brown horn buttons ; a pair of dirty twill clotli trousers, brown and white stripe, fly front, raised seams at sides ; an old black cloth waistcoat, roll collar ; a large dirty calico shirt ; and the stolen Sheet. It is now supposed the thief had two arms, and that he had his left cut of his coat sleeve. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Stretten, Wilts Constabulary, Marlborough. — Bow- street, Januari/ 5. A man named JOSEPH STEPHENSON, a mason, from Staindrop, in the County of Durham, has been apprehended by the Sunderland Police, charged with the burglary at the house of Misses Robertson, Tweedworth, advertised in the Police Gazette, of the 26th ultimo, and nearly all the stolen property has been recovered. Information to be given to Superintendent Ronaldson, Town Hall, Berwick- upon- Tweed, Northumberland.— Bow- street, January 3. Between 9 p. m. on the 28tli and 6 a. m. on the 29th ultimo, a weaving room at Great Lever, near Bolton, Lancashire, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen therein : forty- two Alhambra Quilts, blue and white, of three different patterns ; thirty of the quilts were packed in three bundles of ten each, five others were loose, and seven all in one piece, which was taken from the loom ; also a rough packing Sheet, marked ' J. B. & S.' Information to be given to the Superintendent, County Constabulary, Little Bolton, Lancashire.— Bow- street, January 1. On the night of the 24th instant, the house of Mr. Joseph Allen, Hale- road, Bowden, was entered, and the following property stolen : a silver Watch, maker Millet, No. 4935 ; a silver Guard ; a gold Ring, set in blue stone ; a spade ace Guinea ; and about 20s. in Silver. Information to bs given to Superintendent Steen, Altrincham, Cheshire.- Bow- street, December 27. Between 12 midnight 18tli and 1 a. m. on the 10th inst., the dwelling- house of Mr. Samuel Wiley, of Brandsby, was broken and entered : a Writing Desk was taken from the sitting room into the kitchen, also a Looking Glass, with two Drawers in it, was taken from Mr. Wiley's bedroom, and the contents of both turned out. The burglars were alarmed by oae of the servants, and left the house without taking any- thing away, and they are supposed to be two men, one about 5 feet 8 inches high, rather stout figure ; dressed in long dark coloured coat, buttoned up the front, and slouched billycock hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Hunter, North Riding Constabulary, Heworth, or to Sergeant Ellerby, Easingwold.— Bow- street, December 26. Between 1 and 9 a. m. on the 25th instant, the pawnshop of Mr. James Cottom, of No. 21, Eanam, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : 1 silver lever Watch, white dial, sunk seconds, No. 3720. 9 silver lever Watches, white dials, plain gold balances, Nos. 5387, 5226, 1292, 30012, 6886, 29893 and 89899, 4522, 192, and 4381. 1 silver lever hunting Watch, No. 8070. 1 ditto, French make, No. 1911. 5 silver Geneva Watches, white dials, Nos. 91021, 2707, 5346, 26700, and 5. 7 silver verge Watches, pair cases, Nos. 1173, 228, 11150, 2033, and 1478. 1 ditto, French make, No. 1259. 7 metal verge Watches, Nos. 4445, 6513, 4222, 1770, 8493, 210, and 425. 61 gold wedding and keeper Rings, of various qualities. 3 lady's gold dress Rings, set with rubies and garnets. 1 gentleman's gold dress Ring, with white stone, shape of a shield. 5 pairs of gold Ear- rings, drop pattern. 1 pair of flowered Ear- rings, ring pattern, 18 carat. 2 pairs of plain Ear- rings, ring pattern, 9 carat. 1 gold watch guard Chain, 9 carat. 5 silver albert guards. 4 silver guard Chains, plain pattern. 1 ditto, secret link. 7 gold Lockets, oval shaped. 1 ditto, with four compartments. 2 ditto, with blue enamelled crosses. 1 gold breast Pin, with garnet stone. 1 ditto, with whip, pearl handle, and fox's head. 1 ditto, scroll pattern. Whoever will give such information as will lead to the con- viction of the offender or offenders will receive a reward of £ 2. And whoever will give such information as will lead to the recovery of the property will receive a reward of £ 10, or a proportionate amount for the recovery of any portion of the property. Information to be given to Chief Constable Potts, Town Hall, Blackburn.— Bow- street, December 26. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen from a field at Yardley, during the night of the 25th ultimo : a dark chesmit Horse, about 15 hands 2 inches high, iu very good condition, grizzly tail, abeut 8 years old, has small lumps over each eye, about the' size of marbles. Information to be given to Superintendent Gallaway, Aston, near Birmingham.— Bow- street, January 5. Stolen from a field at Eydon, Northamptonshire, on the night of the 26th ultimo, the property of Mr. Stutchfield, farmer : a black nag Mare, aged, 15 hands high, face, near fore leg up to knee, and near hind foot white, tail level with hocks, and in working condition. Information to be given to Superintendent Osborn, Towcester, or to Inspector Botterill, Brackly, Northamptonshire.— Bow- street< January 1. On the night of the 24th ult., a ewe Sheep, the property of Mr. Robert Farthing, of Torriugton, in the parish of North Petherton, Somersetshire, was killed, and some portions carried away. Whoever ( not being the actual offender or offenders), will give such information to Superintendent Jeffs, Police Station, North Petherton, Somersetshire, as will lead to a conviction, shall receive £ 20 reward.— Bow- street, Jan. 1. Stolen on the night of the 23id ultimo, from a stable at Priory Farm, Hastings, a brown gelding Pony, 10 or 11 hands high, grey about the muzzle, steps short, and aged. Infor- mation to be given to Chief Superintendent Glenister, Hastings, Sussex.— Bow- street, January 1. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Absconded from the borough of Derby, on the 27th ult., charged with stealing £ 60, the monies of his mistress, and for whose apprehension a warrant has been granted: FREDERICK TIVEY, 19 years of age, but looks much younger, about 5 feet high, light brown hair, which is short and thin, very small features, rather stout built, and walks very erect ; when he absconded he was wearing a pair of thick leather lace- up boots, dark cloth trousers, much worn, a short back jacket, billy hat, black and white plaid scarf, and a butcher's blue coat. £ 5 reward will be paid for his appre- hension and recovery of the money, or in proportion thereto. Information to be given to Head Constable Hilton, Police Office, Derby.— Bow- street, January 5. Absconded from Cromhall, on the 21st ultimo, charged on a warrant with larceny as a bailee : GEORGE STANLEY, alias JOHN STANLEY, a drover, 23 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, light hair, little or no whiskers, turns his toes out when walking, and round shouldered ; dressed in an old brown coat, dark trousers and vest, hairy cap, old shoes, cut down the front, is a native of Whitfield, Gloucester ; he is supposed to be in Birmingham, is well known to cattle dealers and drovers at Bristol and Chippenham. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Ellison, Chipping Sodbury, or to P. C. Bunker, Wickwar, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bonc- street, Jamuiry 3. Stolen on the 28th ultimo, from a cottage in the parish of Enville, £ 50 in Gold. By a navvy, about 50 years of age, about 5 feet 10| inches high, dark complexion, long features, and short stiff' whiskers; dressed in light moleskin jacket and trousers, high navvy boots, billycock hat, and dark blue waistcoat ; he lately worked on the roads iu Enville. Infor- mation to be given to the Superintendent of Police, Enville, Staffordshire.— Bow- strcct, January 1. Stolen on the 27th ultimo, from the house of Frederick Janes, at Stanbridge, near Leighton Buzzard : a silver lever Watch, a silver verge ditto, and a silver guard Chain. By a young man, the nephew of Mrs. Janes, about 19 years of age, 6 feet 3 inches high, dark complexion and hair, very long eyebrows ; dressed in black pilot jacket, dark grey trousers, 2 P O L I C E G A Z E T T E. Stolen from the dwelling- house of John Pescott, at Northchapel, ou the 29th ultimo: a silver J- plate lever hunting Wateh, jewelled in 10 holes, No, 39.44, maker James Mynes; a silver albert Guard and a Key attached. Bv an Irishman, a tramp, about 44 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, thiu face, dark hair and whiskers ; dressed in a long brown cloth overcoat, with pockets at the side, plaid or grey trousers, and soft billycock hat ; he was relieved at Petworth Union the night before, and will probably apply at other unions. luf eu matiou to be given to Superintendent Kew- mish, West Sussex Constabulary, Petworth. - Bow- street, January 1. Absconded from Shrewsbury, on the 20th ultimo, charged on a warraut with embezzlement: WILLIAM DAY or DAVIES, about 43 years of age, 5 feet high, dark hair and whiskers, ruddy, complexion, very round shoulders ; dressed in a grey coat, cord trousers, and billycock hat; he is a rope spinner, has worked in Hereford and Ludlow, and frequents cattle markets as a drover. He is accompanied by a woman, cord trousers, Scotch cap, lace- up boots, and light spotted scarf. Description of licence- holders who have failed to report themselves at a Metropolitan Police Station, as required by the Penal Servitude Act, 1864 : CATHERINE MC. DONOUGH, No. 43, 32 years of age, o teet high, dark complexion, dark brown hair grey eyes, pockmarked, left forefinger deformed ; was sentenced to 7 years penal servitude at Leeds Session for previous conviction ; her 1873. about 5 feet 3 inches high, pockmarked, red face, aud dressed in black, who has two children with her, from 7 to 10 years " of age ; she sings ballads in the streets. RUSBRIDGE, watch jobber, late of Kentish- plate, Hastings, charging him with stealing, about the 22nd ultimo, a large gold lever Watch, gold dial, double case, No. 43587, no maker's name, called in the trade a ' Liverpool Wateh " : he is 28 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fair complexion, light curly hair, slight mous- tache, light blue eyes, and dimple on his chin ; dressed in a dark jacket, vest, and trousers, and black deerstalker hat: his mother resides at No. 57, West- street, Brighton, and he is supposed to be knowu in Wilderness- row, Clerkenwell. In- formation to be given to Chief Superintendent Glenister. Town Hall, Hastings.— Bow- street, January 1. Stolen during the night of the 26th instant from the dwelling- house of John Fido, in the parish of Corsham, Wilts, a labourer : a brown Overcoat, pockets outside, black velvet collar, brown covered buttons, half worn ; a pair of brown Trousers, fly front, dark stripe at side and much worn. By a man, 5' feet 3 inches high, 30 years of age, dark com- plexion, black hair, hazel eyes, cut on left forefinger aud right third finger ; a shoemaker. Information to be given to Su- perintendent Wiltshire, Police Station, Chippenham, Wilts. — Bow- street, December 29. Stolen during the last week by a lodger from a house at Seacombe, Cheshire, the following property : A large paisley scarf Shawl. A green striped- woollen Dress, much worn. A gold engagement Ring, with two red stones, and a white one in centre. A large gold keeper Ring, imitation of a strap aud buckle. A small gold keeper Riug. A small gold Anchor, 1| inch long, had attached a small gold ring very thin. A plated Brooch, to hold two likenesses, but only had iu the photograph of a gentleman. A childs blue merino Frock, with four tucks. A chi ds megenta Frock, with four tucks, and a Cape. She is about 20 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, dark com- plexion, long thin features, dark hair, and eyes, prominent front teeth, has an impediment in her speech ; dressed when last seen in a dark winsey skirt, cloth jacket, and black straw hat, trimmed with black velvet, and feather on top, also wore a black fall. Information to be given to Supt. Egerton, Cheshire Constabulary, Birkenhead, Cheshire. — Bow- street, December 29. Description of JAMES BUDD, charged at Grantham, with stealing on the 23rd instant, from Mr. Wm. Dixon, clothier : one Over- coat, one blue Coat, one sealskin Vest, ; ind one pair of Trousers. He is a native of Marylebone, London, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, slender built, light hair, whiskers all round the chin, has been apprenticed to a plane maker, has lately been working as a light porter at Grove's, clothiers, Edgeware- road, London, and has lived with his mother at No. 12, Little Carlisle- street, Marylebone, London. £ b 5s reward will be given for his apprehension. Information to be given to Superintendent Rudkin, Borough Police Station, Grantham, Lincolnshire.— Bow- st., December 29. Stolen from a dwelling house at Chilwell, Notts, about 3 p. m. ou the 2lst instant, the property of Michael Cowen, labourer : a black Coat, two pockets inside hips, one inside breast: a black Vest, single- breasted ; a pair of dark Trousers, with blue stripes crosswise ou the cloth ; a black Coat, with three buttons, wide sleeves narrowed at wrists, two outside pockets, and one inside breast, bound with mohair; a black Vest, ribbed, single- breasted, roll collar ; a pair of black Trousers, have been let out behind, the lining loose at the bottom ; a browu mixture Overcoat, has had a piece taken out of the inside of the breast aud put ou the cull's to lengthen them, two hip pockets in, the seams, one breast pocket out- side, one inside, rather low down on the hips, aud a chin strap ; a plated Brooch, cameo, Britannia ; a Brooch with red stone and Riug attached ; and a small Box made of shells. By a tramp, who left his coat and vest behind, with bits of soap aud an old pipe in the pockets. Information to be given to Superintendent Palethorpe, County Police Station, Nottingham.— liow- street, December 29. Stolen from the ' Wheatsheaf ' hotel, Redhill, on the 28th instant: a gold Geneva Watch, with gold Guard; a lady's gold Ring, set with pearls aud garnet ; a gold chain Bracelet; and a chased Thimble. By a man, who slept at the hotel for one night, about 40. years of age, 5 feet .9 or 10 inches high, dark hair, large dark whiskers and moustache, spoke with a Scotch or foreign accent; dressed respectably, and wore elastic side- spriug boots, with three buttons up the front ; carried a black leather bag and an umbrella. Infor- mation to be given to Head Constable Rogers, Reigate, Surrey.— Bow- street, December 29. of 3d., 4d., and 6d. Pieces, all with holes in them aud threaded on a string. By a man who slept at the hotel that night, and left at 10 a. m. oh the 21st instant; he booked for London Bridge by the 11' 45 a. m. train : he is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, dark hair, large dark whiskers and moustache, spoke with a Scotch accent ; dressed in a suit of brown clothes, high black hat, wore black kid gloves, and carried a black leather bag with two handles ; is of respect- able appearance. Information to be given to Superintendent Peacock, Lewes, or at, any Police Station in East Sussex. — Bow- street, December 26.
