POLICE GAZETTE BG AUTFRORITG* CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received in eaeet of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Hortet for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpoBO of obtaining or giting information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, ' may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MB. C. » #* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, " of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all tetters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. . INFORMATIONS. FORGERY. Further particulars respecting THOMAS DEARING, ' advertised in the Police Gazette of the 15th instant, under t„ e head of ' Larceny and Embezzlement': a warrant has been issued for his apprehension, charging him with forging an endorsement upon a certain order for the payment of £ 60, with intent to defraud the Liberator Building and Invest- ment Society, 48, King William- street, London, in May last ; he was traced to Euston- square Station on the evening of the 4th instant, and had with him two large portmanteaus, a parcel covered with canvas, and a black bag. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Glenister, Hastings, Sussex, — Sow- street, Devember 20. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Description of two men charged with attempting to % commit burglary at Percy- street, Northfleet, ou the night of 4iie 15th instant : one about 26 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, dressed in a black monkey jacket, dark trousers i ® d vest, black billycock hat; the other about 36 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high ; dressed in dark clothes, and of respectable appearance. They left a jemmy and knife behind them. Information to be given to Superintendent Merritt, Police Station, Chatham, Kent— Bow- st., Bee. 20. During the night of the 17th instant the Elephant and Castle, public- house, Stoney Stretton, Salop, was broken and ... entere'd, and stolen therein : an old- fashioned silver verge Watch, a little enamel chipped off face; an old rusty steel Chain attached, with Seal and Key, the chain having been broken in several places and mended with wire; about 6s. iu Silver and about 5s in Coppers. Information to be given to Superintendent Caswell, County Constabulary, Shrews- bury, or to Police Constable ( 18) Jukes, Westbury, near Shrewsbury>— Bow- stxeet, December 20. A dwelling- house . in the borough of Rochdale, was feloniously broken and Entered during the night of the 17th instant, and the. following property stolen therein : a blue pilot cloth Overcoat, black alpaca lining, bone buttons, one of the buttons off top of right breast, Manchester make; a black ribbejl cloth shooting Coat, bound with braid, has been repaired about the pockets and lining; a black cloth Over- coat, a button torn ; and h, black billycock Hat. Information to be given to Chief Constable Stevens, Borough Police Office, Rochdale, Lancaster.— ftiw- sireei, December 20. During the night of the 13th instant the cottage of Charles Hurley, of Spaxton, Somerset, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen therein : a black Jacket with merino lining; a dark brown Jacket, two inside pockets and a cap pocket on right side ; a shepherd's plaid Shawl, darned in several places ; two white Shirts, one with plain front ; two calico Sheets; a Blanket; an old pair of cord Trousers ; a pair of heavy lace. up Boots ; a pair of half Wellington Boots; a pair of elastic- side Boots ( women's); a pair of worsted stockings ; and a quantity of old Rags. Sup- posed by a short stout man, about 45 years of age ; dressed iu bowler hat, sleeve waistcoat, and fustian trousers, and carries an old leather bag under his arm with boots rolled up in it. Information to be given to Superintendent Jeffs, Police . Station, North Netherton, Somerset.— Bow- street, December 18$* On the afternoon of the 16th instant, the house of Matthew Mortimer, of Manningford Bohun, Pewsey, Wilts, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen therein : a grey clotli Overcoat, burnt in corner of one skirt; a grey dress Coat; a black ditto, new; a blue striped Coat; a pair of grey Trousers, with dark stripe down the sides ; a Trousers, newly lined ; a cord Waistcoat, new ; a grey ditto ; a light ditto, with shining buttons ; a coloured Shirt, new ; two calico Shirts, one striped, the other plain; and a calico Sheet. A man is suspected : about 35 years of age, rather tall and stout, stubbly beard, and is supposed to have lost an arm, or to have had one of them out of his coat sleeve ; dressed in a long coat, cord trousers, and high black hat. Idformation to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Stretten, Wilts Constabulary, Marlborough.— Bow- street, December 18. Between 11' 30 aim. and 7 p. m. on the 27th July last, the dwelling house of Mr. James Edward Arthur, No. 62, Duke's Brow, Blackburn, was broken and entered, and the following property, together with other articles already recovered and traced to the possession of the person herein described, stolen therein : 1 lady's gold Necklet, snake pattern. 1 ditto, link pattern. 1 pair of Ear- rings, dead gold, drop pattern, with stones. 1 pair ditto, dead gold, three links. 1 small gold diamond Pin, small emerald in centre, which is broken. 1 plain gold wedding Ring, much worn. 1 lady's plain gold keeper Ring, with the words ' Love the giver.' 1 lady's plain gold mourning Ring, new. 1 gold Locket, with hair device. 1 ditto, dead gold, set with turquoise, two photographs, one a gentleman, the other a lady. 1 ditto, enamelled, to hold six photographs. 1 gold Brooch, jet edges. 1 ditto, small plain pattern. 1 ditto, containing the photograph of a lady and gentle- man. 1 Bracelet, mounted in dead gold, with brown hair. 1 gold watch Seal. 2 small silver Pencilcases, one of a key pattern. 1 fruit Knife, tortoiseshell handle and silver blade. 3 4d. Pieces, 4 3d. ditto, and some old silver Coins, one with monogram ' RM,' one marked ' 1 b,' one 4d. piece of the reign of King William IV. 1 silver verge Watch, double case, old- fashioned, lettered ' William Weare ' round dial in place of figures. By five men of the following description : RICHARD JENKINS, 30 years of age, looks older, 5 feet 5 inches high, stout make, round shoulders, oval face, short nose, light brown hair, sandy whiskers, cut mark on left cheek ; dressed in black cloth short coat, brown mixture striped trousers, and dark billycock hat; carries a horse rug. and is a native of Birmingham. JOHN TURNER, from 30 lo 35 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, slender make, thin face, a blue cut mark on face from near mouth backward, sandy whiskerS, brown hair, long Hose ; dressed in black suit ( top coat), cloth cap with French peak, and sometimes a billycock liat; he is a native of Birmingham. THOMAS MURPPY, 23 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 8 inches high, proportionate make, round face, small dark moustache, no whiskers, dark hair ; dressed in dark suit and light over- coat ; is a native of Birmingham, but of Irish parentage. A mail known by the name of COCKNEY, 20 to 22 years of age, 5 feet 1 or 2 inches high, proportionate made, round face and pimpled, large cut mark on face from near mouth backwards, one over right eye, no whiskers, light brown hail short nose; dressed in plaid trousers, black coat, black billy- cock hat; a native of London, and ii well known in Chartre- street Manchester And JERRY or JEREMIAH DYANN, 22 to 26 years of age, 5 feet 1 or 2 inches high, slender made, round face, long nose, some teeth out in front upper side, mouth much fallen in; no Whiskers, brown hair : dressed iu long dark overcoat, brown striped trousers, has a white jacket. Whoever will give such information as may lead to the appre- hension and conviction of the offender or offenders, will receive £ 2 reward on application to Chief Constable Potts, Town Hall, Blackburn, Lancashire.- Bow- street, December 15. On the night of the llth instant the Post Office at Deben- ham was broken and entered, and stolen therein : twelve nickel silver Forks, dessert size ; half a skin of Washleather; and about .£ 1 16s. 6d. in gold and silver Money. Informa- tion to be given to Sergeant Rumsby, Police Station, Deben- ham, Suffolk.— Bow- street, December 13. Stolen between 12 p. m. and 7 a. m. on the 9th instant, by means of housebreaking, from the Queen's Head Inn, Whit- ley, near Reading : a silver consular lever Watch, four holes jewelled, maker C. McLachlan, 1847 ; a bottle of Sherry Wine ; three bottles of home- made grape Wine ; two bottles of elder Wine ; and two pint bottles of India pale Ale. In- formation to be given to Superintendent Crook, Berks Con- stabulary Station, Reading.— Bow- street, December 13. ' Nurdin and Peacock, 12, Berwick- street, Soho' on off side, containing a box and 120D Eggs.- - Metropolitan Police, D Division, December 18. Found, supposed to have been stolen, about the 6th inst., at Bradley- green, an aged roan cob Horse, about 14 hands high, star on forehead, and black mane and tail. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Bevan, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire.— Bow- st., December 18. Stolen, during the night of the 13th instant, from a field at Glanyrafon, a Welch wether Sheep, pitch marked on the off side ' R,' the property of Mr. Rogers, Glanyrafon. Infor- mation to be given to Police Constable Williams, Llanfyllin Oswestry, or to Superintendent Strefford, Welshpool, Mont- gomeryshire.— Bow- street, December 18. Absconded from Bournemouth, at 1 p. m. on the 12th inst., charged with stealing a bay- Mare, Bridle, and Saddle, the property of Henry Laidlaw, livery stable keeper, also charged with stealing a silver Watch and gold albert Chain, from a fellow lodger : a groom, about- 23 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, dark complex, I . round face, dark brown hair, and very little whiskers ; dressed in dark coat and vest, tight fitting ligU coloured trousers, black round- crowned hard hat, shabby black necktie, and lace- up boots, with brass- eyelet holes. Information to be given to Sergeant Masterman, Hants Constabulary, Bournemouth.— Bow- street, December 18. Stolen from a Wood at Tiffenden Farm, High Halden the property of Daniel Swaffer, between the lst September and lst ultimo : six Lambs of tha Kent breed, marked ' O' on near side. Information to be given to Superintendent Morgan, Kent County Constabulary, Cranbrook.— Bow- street, December 15. Found in a field at Little Bromwich, ou the lst instant, and supposed to have Ijeen stolen : three- yearlitfg Calves, two light colour red and white, and one yellow and black ; and a dark brown mare Pony, about 11 hands high, long mane and tail, and is very wild. All the above appeared to have been driven a long way. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Gallaway, Warwickshire Constabulary, Ashton, near Birmingham.— Bow- street, December 15. Stolen on the 4th instant, from a stable of Messrs. Davis and Nichols, Peckham : a dark chesnut Mare, aged, 14 hands high, lame in off fore leg, two white spots on near side, and in good condition.— Metropolitan Police, P Division, De- cember 13. • Stolen from a field at Wall Heath, between the 3rd and 8th instant : a bay hack Mare, aged, 14 hands high, white blaze dowu the face, and two white hind fetlocks, the property of Thomas Brettle, Esq., Dudley. Information to be given at any Police Office in the County of Stafford, or to Chief Supt. Burton, Police Office, Dudley.— Bow- street, December 13. Found at Brayton, near Selby, on the 13th ultimo, aud supposed to have been [ stolen : a grey mare Pony, aged, 12£ hands high, has a few brown spots under the eyes, has had both knees broken, in moderate condition, and also seems very vicious. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Wardle, Selby, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, December 13. Found at Alford, Surrey, and supposed to have been stolen : a dark brown gelding Horse, aged, about 14 hands high, small white star on forehead, short ears, switch tail, scar on off hip, long coat, and well shod. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Barker, Surrey Constabulary, Guildford.— Bow- street, December 13. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING, Stolen from out of a field in the marshes, Middlesborough, sometime between the 14th and 17th instant: a Scotch wether Sheep, with black face and legs, and long horns and tail. Information to be given & Chief Constable Saggerson, Borough Police Office, Middlesborough, N. R. Yorks.— Bow- street, December 20. Stolen on the 13tli iustant, from opposite th,. Langham Hotel, Portland- place, St Marylebone :. a Pony, Harness, aud Van : pony, small brown horse, harness old; van, wheels pair of grey Trousers,, without stripes ; a pair of dark cloth painted red, body stone colour, picked out with black. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Description of HENRY FREEMAN, alias TUBBY, labourer, Aveley, Essex, charged with stealing 101 lbs. of Lead from the parish church of Aveley; he is 24 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, light complexion, light brown hair, and a few whiskers on side of facc and chin, inclined to be sandy ; dressed when last seen in a short jacket, cord front and fustian back and sleeves, cord or fustian trousers, hairy cap, and white comforter round neck. Information to given to Inspector Freeman, Police Station, Orsett, or to Sergeant Odam, Aveley, Essex, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, December 20. Obtained by false pretences, on the 16th instant, from No. 6, King- street, Grosvenor- square : a Horse, Bridle, and Saddle; horse, brown cob gelding, 15 hands ! inch high, 6 years old, light nose ; bridle and saddlf, new. By a stable- man, 25 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, dark complexion and hair ; dressed in blue pea jacket, dark trousers, and deer- stalker hat.— Metropolitan Police, C Division, December 20. Absconded from Dorchester on the 14th instant, charged on a warrant with stealing £ 15 : WILLIAM MICKLE- BURGH, a hay trusser, 32 years of age, 5 feet inches high, dark brown hair, hazel eyes, fair complexion, and slightly pockpitted ; dressed iu a new grey speckled suit of clothes, round top black felt hat, and carried a bundle, sup- posed to be trussing tools. Information to be given to Head Constable Coward, Borough Police Office, Guildhall, Dor-' Chester, Dorset.— Bow- street, December 18. Absconded from Daventry on the 3rd instant, charged" on a warrant with larcency as a bailee : JAMES WHITE a hawker of cloth, 40 years [ of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, and black hair and moustache turning grey ; dressed in a long brown coat, dark trousers and vest, black billycock hat, very red nose, and blotched face; he is a native of Sheffield, but coat, light vest and trousers, and black alpine bat; he is of Irish descent. By a man, who lodged there one night, giveu t0' Chief Sup and said he was a carpenter : about 28 years of age, 5 feet B 4 inches high, fair complexion, " light whiskers, beard, and moustache; dressed in a darkfgrey suit and alpine hat. Sup- posed to be carrying on a system of robbing lodgings in a similar manner. Information to be given at the Police Office, Tunbridge Wells, Kent.— Bow- street, December 18. Absconded from West Tilbury, on the llth instant, charged with fowl stealing from Yange, two men of the fol Obtained by false pretences, on the 14th instant, from Mr. Charles Poole, riding master, Waterloo- street, Hove, near Brighton : a brown Horse, 6 years old, 15 hands 2 inches high, in good condition, quite sound, three white feet, a stripe of white close to the hoof of the off fore foot, and slightly fired on the hocks. By a man, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, full red face, and no hair on face ; dressed iu a lowing description :— One named TURNER, alias RUSSIAN, ulle coatj brown trousers, and a black billycock hat; has the about 30 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 niches high, long visage, appearance of a countryman. Information to be given to fair complexion, light hair, whiskers shaved off; has been a Chief Superintendent Breach, Town Hall, Hove, near soldier, and walks a little lame at times, through being Brighton, Sussex.- Bow- street, December 18. wounded in one of his legs ; dressed, when last seen, in old round cord jacket, with fustiau back, old cord trousers, patched with canvass, aud imitation seal- skin Russian cap : , , , . , f . He left Berth, near Aberystwith, December 18. on the 15th instant, from a lodging- house in a pair of strong watertight Boots, nearly new. Stolen Sandbach : By a man of the following description, who lodged in the house one night, and left at the time of the robbery : about 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, dark hair and moustache, where he had been staying at au hotel for about seven month on the 25th ultimo ; has been traced to Shrewsbury and Birmingham, which he left on the 6th for London. He was then accompanied by a young woman, late servant at the hotel at Borth, who passed as his wife. They had then a large quantity of luggage, addressed ' Capt. Morton, passenger to London.' No. 53220, size 7, of the same pattern as those sized 8; and a 22- size, ' Joseph Thomas Brown, London,' on dial,' Joseph pair of men's Lasts, size 7 ; together with Materials j Thomas Brown,' on movements. for making bottoms for the above; a pair shoemaker's! Also from No. 13, Hart- street, Bloomsbury : five Watches, Pincers ; a Jupp seat Wheel ; a men's double Iron ; and two one gold half hunter, keyless, 18- size, No. 1493; one ditto, single Irons. He stated he had been in the Army, ancl was ! 14- size, No. 5267 ; one ditto, open face, 18- size, No. 4512 ; in receipt of a pension, a native of Glasgow, about 40 years of age, about 6 feet high, dark complexion, whiskers, and moustache, turning grey, stoops when walking, black hair, chesterfield overcoat, dark trousers, black hat, small tie, of gentlemanly appearance, and wore a snake pattern ling. — Metropolitan Police, E Division, December 18. MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATIONS. Description of a woman named SELINA MANNERING one ditto, polished cases, 13- size, No. 2193 ; oue ditto, ditto, enamelled case, No. 38456. By a man, 40 years of age, 5 feet 9| inches high, dark com- and slender figure ; ' dressed in a black frock coat, grey plezion, hair, whiskers and moustache; dressed in brown trousers, old pair of lace boots, recently sol- ed, and dark velvet• cap. Was accompanied by a femalev a native of Scotland, 40 to 45 years of age, 5 feet 2 or inches high, fair com- plexion, brown hair, and bridge of nose broken ; dressed iu green shawl, and straw bonnet. She was in possession of a pedlar's certificate, granted to Jane Reidor Smieh, at Selkirk, on the 3rd of May, 1871, anil which, was endorsed at Penrith, Oil the 4th of October, 1871. She is charged with stealing a cotton Shirt, and a child's Pinafore. Absconded from his apprenticeship, as a shoemaker, at Husbourn Crawley, ou the 7th instant, ai » d charged with stealing a light brown cloth Overcoat, velvet collar; a red and black woollen Scarf ; a black cloth Hat, wire round edge of brim ; a pair of side- spring Boots ; and a silver case verge Watch, has seconds hands and small hour hands fixed near top of face, so that there are no figures round dial; steel curb Chain with bar attached, the. property of Alfred Faulkener, his master: HENRY TUCK, of Bedford, about 14 years of age, about 5 feet high, fresh complexion, stout make, takes short steps, aud stoops a little when walking ; dressed in rough dark jacket, dark grey tousers, and may be wearing the stolen coat aud boots ; his mother is living at No. 131, Mild- way- road, Stoke Newington, and has a sister living at No. 87, 17, Church- road, Islington. Information to be given to Superintendent Shepherd, Police Station, Woburu, Beds., who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, Dec. 15. Stolen from Pen tie Mill, in the county of Montgomery, on the 11th instant, the property of John Hartfield : a Box, containing two Waistcoats; one Coat; one Hat; one piece of Cloth ; two Watches ; £ 23 in Money ; and a pocket Knife : the box and the whole of the clothes have been recovered, and about £ 7 of the money. Supposed by a man named EDWD.
