The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are krwwn but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not hnotcn, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may had to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate, as pos& ible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Hor* es for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. Notice.— It. is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to ME. W. D, BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.,' authority. as they cannot be published without his INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Description of JOHN HALLIDAY, charged with murder, on the 25th idtimo, in the burgh of Wishaw : he is a Scotchman, a bricklayer, 22 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, thin face, high cheek bones, dark brown hair, short whiskers grown under the ear only, whiskers lighter than hair, and very bandy or bow- legged ; generally dressed in a light grey suit, and grey felt hat. Is fond of shooting, often carries a gun, is well known to pigeon match shooters, and often com- petes himself at matches. It is supposed he will endeavour to emigrate to America or some other foreign part. A warrant has been granted for his apprehension. Information to be given to the Procurators- Fiscal, Hamilton ; to the Chief Con- stable of the County; or to Superintendent Dewar, Police Chambers, Wishaw, Lanarkshire.— Bow- street, October 9. FORGERY. Description of JOSEPH MARSHALL, alias MOSES CROOKS, charged with uttering a forged Promissory Note for ,£ 250 : he is about 28 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, fresh complexion, light ginger whiskers and moustache, and wears spectacles, being near sighted ; dressed in blue undercoat, black doable- breasted vest, black and white striped trousers, brown overcoat, with light brown velvet collar, white billycock hat, and is of gentlemanly appearance. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Leeds, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, October 18. Description of JOHN MILLAR, charged with fraudu- lently obtaining £ 375, on the presentation of two forged cheques in a bank in Glasgow, on the 27th ultimo and 6th instant: he is about 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark hair and complexion, full face, dark moustache, had some hair on his chin, which may be shaved off, no whiskers; dressed in felt hat and a suit of new dark clothes; has a smart appearance, is a native of Edinburgh, where his parents reside, and was lor nine years a clerk ao tne Carron Wharf, Port Dundas, Glasgow. Part of the money obtained consisted of two £ 100 Notes of the Clydesdale Banking Company. Information to be given to Superintendent Brown, Detective Department, Glasgow.— Bow- street, October 11. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of Mr. William Arrowsmith, farmer, at Hay, Breconshire, on the 10th instant: a gold Watch, with compensation balance, open face, No. 505, maker Myer, Hereford ; and a plaited leather albert Guard attached. A reward of £ 5 is offered for the recovery of the Watch, and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Brecon, to Superinten- dent Evans, Crickhowell, or to Sergeant Jones, Hay, Brecon- shire.— Bow- street, October 13. Stolen from the person of a man, at Tunbridge Wells, on the 26th ultimo : four £ 10 Bank of England Notes, Nos. 53997, dated 23 | 3 | 71; 61.994, 23 | 6 | 71; 02653,22 | 6 | 71; and 34554, 23 | 3 | 71. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Embery, Town Hall, Tunbridge Wells, Kent. — Bow- street, October 11. broken and entered, and stolen therein : a quart bottle of Port Wine ; four or five pint bottles of Champagne ; part of a Leg of Mutton ; two small loaves of Bread, & c. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Peerless, Uckfield, Sussex, or at any Police Station in East Sussex.— Bow- street, Oct. 18. Stolen by means of housebreaking, in the borough of Rochdale, between 6 and 9 p. m. on the 15th instant : 12 Table Knives and 12 Dessert Knives, oval ivory handles, maker Rogers. 11 Dessert Knives, oval ivory handles, maker Harrison. 12 Table Forks, 12 Dessert Forks, and 12 Dessert Spoons, all electro- plated, fiddle pattern, engraved monogram ' H. Information to be given to Chief Constable Stevens, Rochdale, Lancashire.— jBow- street, October 18. Between 12' 30 and 7 a. m. on the 14th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. C. Hillier, of Chatham, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a gold Locket, a silver Knife, Fork, and Spoon ; several plated tea Spoons ; some Postage and Receipt Stamps; a box of Cigars ; and some copper Monies. Information to be given to Superintendent Merritt, Police Station, Chatham, Kent.— Bow- st., October 18. During the night of the 13th instant, the workshop of Mr. Lipscomb, Leathe'rhead, Surrey, was broken into, and the following property stolen therein : a hand Saw, a half rip ditto, a trying Plane, a smoothing ditto, a jack ditto, a sash Filister, a 12- inch Square, a 6- incIi ditto, a tool Basket, and a carpenter's Apron ; some of the tools are marked ' H. T. Lips- comb,'' H. L.,' ' T. L.,' and others ' G. Smith.' Information to be given to Superintendent Page, Surrey Constabulary, Dorking, or at the Police Station, Leatherhead, Surrey.'— Bow- street, October 16. On the night of the 10th August last, or early on the following morning, some person or persons feloniously entered the premises of Messrs. Raffety and Son, No. 11, High- street, High Wycombe, and stole, from an iron safe, three Cashboxes, containing three Cheques, three Notes, £ 30 in Gold and Silver, and a quantity of valuable Documents. A warrant has been issued for the apprehension of WM. MURRAY, who is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark hair, is sunburnt, has been to sea several times, and last returned from South America about three months ago ; he has been a brickmaker ; he lodged or stayed, on the 21st ultimo, at No. 64, Pickwick- street, Liverpool, and was at No. 5, Swan- buildings, Swan- place, Old Kent- road, Londou, on the 7th instant. £ 5 reward will be paid on his apprehension, and £ 20 more upon conviction. Information to be given to Superintendent Davis, High Wycombe, Bucks.— Bow- street, October 13. Between 7 and 12 a. m. on the 11th instant, the dwelling- house of Richard Vallins, in the parish of Sutton- at- Hone, Kent, was broken and enfered, and stolen therein: a dark pilot cloth Coat, with pockets at the sides, lined with red and black plaid ; a black cloth mixture Coat, with pockets at the sides ; a blue silk Handkerchief, representing a cricket match in the centre ; a pair of black cloth Trousers, bound round the top with red ; a pair of black cord Trousers, lined ; two black cloth Vests; a light cord double- breasted Vest; two blue Shirts ; a pair of lace Boots, and an old pinchbeck on paper inside. By a man Stolen on the night of the 15th instant, from Aspenden : a chestnut cart Mare, aged, about 16 hands high, well bred, fit for a light van or cart, quiet in harness, the off hind leg is white half way up, and the other a little further, star on forehead ; a colt has recently been taken from her. It is supposed that she was driven away in a gipsey's cart, by two men : 24 or 25 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high ; dressed in cord suits, trousers fitting tight to the legs, black felt round hats, lace- up boots, with brass eyelet- holes ; the cart had the name of ' Abraham Baldock, Abingdon, Berks,' on the side. Information to be given to Inspector Oliver, Buntingford, Herts.— Bow- street, October 20. Stolen from a field at New Inns, Claverly, on the night of the 9th instant, the property of Mr. Edmund Hodchinson, a light bay cob Mare, 14£ hands high, 4 years old, and bang tail ; and a roan- coloured Filly, 1J year old, and about 10 hands high; both in good condition. Information to be given to Superintendent Ivins, Bridgnorth, - or to Police Con- stable ( No. 81) Merricks, Claverley, Salop. — Bow- st., Oct. 18. Left at an Inn, in Welshpool, on the 9th instant, ( fair day), an old brown cart Mare, white face, and three white fetlocks, supposed to be stolen. Information to be given to Superintendent Strefford, Welshpool, Montgomeryshire.— Bou- street, October 16. Description of a person calling himself FREDERICK TURNER, alias HENRY WEST, charged with stealing, on the 3rd instant, a Horse, the property of William Scorer, of Burwell: about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fresh complexion, round face, brown hail, rather long and curly, small whiskers, rather thick lips, and a peculiar smile; dressed before selling the horse in long drab slop, after selling the horse in old long grey coat reaching to the calves of his legs, long grey vest, with four pockets, such as are worn by low horse dealers, drab trousers, rather tight in the legs, old elastic- side boots, black billycock hat, and grey striped shirt; frequents most of the fairs in the Midland Counties. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Leaper, Spalding, Lincolnshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, October 13. Stolen on the 3rd instant, from Wandsworth Common : a light brown Gelding, 13 hands high, aged, fetlocks lighter than the body, hind heels greasy, round blister mark on each hip.— Metropolitan Police, V Division, October 13. Stolen, supposed by tramps, from a stable at Maresfield, Sussex, about 7 p. m. on the 7th instant, a dark brown mare Pony, 2i years old, about 13 hands high, short rough mane, some lays one side and some the other side of the neck, has a mark on the near hind fetlock from being cut with a rope, it is weak in the hind legs from being over worked; and a leather- headed Halter. A man of the following description put up at the White Lion Inn, East Grinstead, at 11 a. m. on the 7th instant, with a dark chesnut pony, white streak down face, and one nostril white, which he drove in a light spring cart, boarded up the sides, and low tailboard ; he left the pony stabled till 10 pm., when he returned with a dark brown pony ( supposed to be the stolen one), wearing a leather- headed halter, and stated that he had bought the pony ; he shortly afterwards left, taking the road for London, with the dark brown pony tied behind the cart : he is about 33 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, dark complexion, has a black spot on one ( supposed the right) side cf his face, dark eyes, dark low eyebrows, and dark hair ; dressed decently in dark clothes and cap Information to be given to Superintendent Peerless, Uckfield, or at any Police Station in East Sussex.— Bow- street, October 13. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Absconded from Beverley, on the 5tli instant, charged with stealing a number of £ 5 Notes of the Hull Banking Company, and some of the Bank of England : RICHARD LOWSON the younger, about 19 years of age, about 5 feet 4 inches high, fairly proportioned, dark complexion, scar under the left ear ; dressed, when he left Hull for Doncaster by railway on the 5th instant, in a black office coat with Watch, ' Whitehead,' man, about P" ckets at the sides < dark stiriped trousers and a round hat; 23 years of age, 5 feet 7* inches high, fresh complexion, thick w° re a goMwateh, No 30928, maker J. C. Hesselton, neck, and dark whiskers meeting under the chin ; supposed to I Beverley, with gold dial, black figures, back of case engraved, be wearing some of the stolen property, as he left his coat and boots behind. Information to be given to Superintendent Brandon, Police Station, Dartfort, Kent.— Bow- street, Oct. 13. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Between 10 p. m. and 7 a. m. on the 15th instant the house of Thomas ' Turner Tate, in the parish of Rotherfield, was HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING, Supposed to have been stolen from a field at Walsall: a black aged wagon Horse, 16 hands high, white star on fore- head, off hind fetlocks much swollen. Information to be given to Chief Constable Cater, Walsall, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, October 20. Stolen from a field at Kenn, on the night of the 6tliinst., the property of Mr. Wm. Avery, a black cart Mare, aged, about 15^ hands high, off liind leg white, white star on fore- head, a large white saddle mark on near side of back, tail cut round liocks, had several white marks, having been stitched up about two years ago after foaling, in good condition, shoe off ithe ioff hind foot, the others much worn. Some gipsies were in the neighbourhood some time before, and are sus- pected. Information to be given to Superintendent Jones, Constabulary Office, Long Ashton, near Bristol; or to the Police, Clevedon, Somerset,— Bow- street, October 20. ! has seconds hand, with gold Albert twisted wire pattern chain, and a large coloured gold locket, embossed as beads, attached. Was accompanied by Septimus Newton, about 5 feet 10 inches high, well proportioned, round face, thick lips, brown hair, and well used to travelling. It is believed that they booked at Doncaster for King's Cross, and had with them a brown leather portmanteau, a black leather bag, a leather hat- box, a railway wrapper, and two overcoats ( one light). Many of the Hull Banking Company's notes were clean, and dated 6tli to 10th March, 1871, also from 3rd to 8th April, 1871, those in March numbering from 4001 to 5000, and the second lot in April from 5001 to 6000; the Bank of England Notes all have the Hull Banking Company's private number written in ink on the front of them, and would be numbered C 302 or B 874, or about those numbers ; amongst them were one note for £ 100, two for £ 50 each, and the rest for smaller sums. Whoever will give such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the above- named Richard Lowson, junior, shall receive £ 50 reward, or more if a large proportion of the stolen property be recovered. Information to be given to Superintendent Knight, Police Station, Beverley, Yorkshire, who holds a warrant for Lowson's apprehension.— Bou'- street, October 20. 9. FOLIC i*. AZ El I'll October 20 Absconded from Exeter on the 17th instant, charged • with stealing Bed Linen and Wearing Apparel: JESSIE CHERITON, alias JESSIE HOLLOWAY, 22 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, dark brown hair, hazel eyes, fresh com- plexion, and slightly marked with the smallpox; dressed in a dark frock bound with green, Leghorn hat trimmed with black and black feather, black cloth jacket; accompanied by j large her husband, who is likely to seek employment on some railway. Information to be given to Head Constable Steel, Guildhall, Exeter, who holds a warrant for her apprehension. — Bow street, October 20. Absconded from his lodgings at Ripon, on the morning of the 18th instant, stealing and taking with him a black cloth surtout Coat; a drab velvet Waistcoat; a cotton cord Waistcoat ; a black and white striped woollen Shirt; and a pair of man's strong Boots, all partly worn, the property of a fellow lodger: he is a labourer, said he belonged to the neighbourhood of' Otley, Yorkshire, about 2: 3 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, no whiskers, a red mark < hi left cheek, very soft voice ; dressed in a dark drab coat, torn on one shoulder, dark fustian trousers, dark cap and clogs, with irons on the bottoms. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Burniston, City Police Office, Ripon. --- Bow- street, October 20. Absconded from Bishops Stortford, on the Mtli instant, CHARLES TUGBY, charged with stealing 91 !:> s, of Lead ( since recovered), the property of the Bishops Si- rtford Gas Company : he is about 17 years of age, about § feet 7 inches high, ligh hair, and thin pale face; dressed in a black pilot jacket, white buttons, dark cord trousers, and soft white billycock hat. He has a pedlar's certificate, granted in Hert- fordshire, and endorsed for Essex, hawker of earthenware, brushes, and lines. He was last seen in Saffron Walden on the 16th, with his brother, who is also a hawker, making their way for lloyston Fair. He will probably visit country fairs in the adjoining counties, and is in the habit of staying at low beerhouses or common lodging- houses. . Information to be given to Superintendent Ryder, Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— - Bow- street, October 20. Description of ANN JONES, who absconded fiom Shepton Mallet, on the 7th instant, charged with stealing the following articles, the property of Miss Eleanor James, her ifiistrejss : three cambric Skirts; two Chemises ; two pairs < tf Drawers ; a white cashmere Shawl, with black Lice border ; ejx Chwizettes; about the same number of lace Cuffs ; five Braided muslin Aprons; five muslin night Cn ps; three Brooches, one gold, and two plated; a gold watch Crook ; jet Earrings aud Bracelets ; a Crown Piece and "' her silver Money ; a dark waterproof with cape ; a black cashmere Shawi, with coloured border; a damask table Cloth, a brown silk Umbrella ; and six electro- plated tea Spoons, quite new Stolen on the 29th ultimo, from the dwelling- house of Mrs. Mary Cherici, of Stockton- on- Tees : an oak- painted cash Box, containing three £ 5 Bank of England Notes, two Leeds, two York, and one Darlington District Bank Notes ; £ 1 7 10s. in Gold : and about £ 5 in Silver : JOHN CHERICI, her son, 14 yen r, i of . age, 4 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, black eyes, black hair, slender figure, and Italian appearance ; dressed in plot coat, grey trousers aud vest, and cheese- cutter cap ; and J. CHlVERTON, 19 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, dark complexion, hazel eyes, brown hair, stout made, a native of Southampton, a sailor; dressed in a pilot coat, fustian trousers, and cheese- cutter cap; it is supposed they will endeavour to go to sea. A reward of £ 5 will be paid to any person giving sunh infor- mation as will ' lead to the apprehension - of the offenders, and recovery of the property, or in proportion to the amount recovered. Goods by false ) « acncra : ne is irom 60 to 4 ) years ot age, 9 inches high, fair complexion, sandy whiskers, and had a slight imped imejit in his speech ; lie ' was accompanied by a female of ' respectable appearance, who he said was his wife : he had an iron- grey pony and light spring cart, painted dark green, with pannels in the back and sides, and brass mounted harness ; he was seen going through Barnet, on the morning of the 14th instant, with a large hamper, and a full sack, tied behind the cart. Information to be given to Head Constable Pike, St. Al- ban's, Herts. — Bow- street, October 18. The brooches, Ear- lings, and black cashmere Shawl have been ; dealer, Exeter : Absconded on the 16th ultimo, from Loudon Bridge Station, London Brighton and South Coast Railway, embez- zling various sums, the property of theCompany: WALTER, BOURNE, clerk, 30 years of age, .5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, hair, and moustache, whiskers shaved off, and dressed respectably. A warrant is issued for his apprehen- sion.— Metropolitan Police, October. 16. Absconded on the 2nd instant, charged at BarnsJey, Yorkshire, on warrant with embezzling £ 7 9s. 4d., of his employers, the Manchester, Sheffield, and Lincolnshire Railway Co., at Worsbrodale Railway Station, where he was acting as station master : HENRY HARLING, 28 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, fresh complexion, brown whiskers on side of face, inclined to be sandy, and brown hair, walks lame, one leg being shorter than the other, and carries a stick ; dressed in a shabby dark suit, and hard billycock hat; he has a good knowledge of Liverpool. In- formation to be given to Superintendent Sykes, West Riding Constabulary, Barnsley.— Bow- street, October 11. Absconded, CHARLES BIRKENSHAW, late beer house keeper and butcher, of Hoyland Common, near Barnsley, Yorkshire, charged with stealing Hay at Tankers- ley, on the night of the 2nd instant: he is 34 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fresh complexion, sandy hair, cut short with two partings, sandy moustache, beard, and whiskers, and has lost some upper front teeth ; he was wearing a pair of clean washed woollen cord trousers. Information to be given at the Superintendent's Office, Barnsley, Yorkshire.— i — Bow- street, October 11. Description of two men who absconded from St. Thomas's, Exeter, on the 4th instant, charged with stealing a quantity of Hay, the property of their master, Mr. John Hann, corn ARCHER, DAVIS, DALBY BARNARD, is 21 years of age, 5 feet 6! __ „. hair, fair complexion, light grey eyes, oval face, small sandy moustache and whiskers, has a slight impediment in his speech, and his nose appears to have been broken ; says he is a shoe rivetter, a native of Daventry, and that he belonged to Northamptonshire Militia until abo; it 2j years ago ; dressed in^ a black silk hat, brown double- breasted overcoat, with raised seams and imitation sealskin collar, dark mixture undercoat, and grey trousers with narrow black stripe down the legs. His wife and child are with him. Information to be given to Head Constable Tun- all, Borough Police Office, Cambridge.— Bow- street, October 20. 2s Escaped from Fareliam Police Station at 10' 45 a. m. on the 17th instant: JOHN HARRIS, remanded for larceny and other offences; 27 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, stout build, short thick neck, round full face, brown hair cut short, no whiskers or moustache, small short nose, small blue eyes, walks with short, quick, springy step, and runs well; dressed when lie escaped in a short white slop ( nearly new), band at waist, buttons in front, moleskin trousers, unwashed, Paisley pattern wrap- handkerchief, and coster's cap with plaid band. Information to be given to Superintendent Drew, Police Station, Fareham, Hants, who will pay £ 1 reward and reasonable expenses on his apprehension.— Bow- street, October 20. Committed to Northallerton Gaol for three months hard labour each, for stealing 14 Pigeons, at Upsall, on the 10th instant : EDWARD BARNAN, 38 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, sallow complexion, hazel eyes, dark brown hair, propor- tionate figure ; dressed in an old grey cloth coat, velveteen ' vest, cotton cord trousers, black cap, and old lace- up boots. be given to Deputy Chief Constable Bloxham, Somersetshire j whisker* ulcUned to be samly, and of dirty appearance \ j Constabulary, Glastonbury ; Mallet.— Bow- stivet, October 18. recovered.
