The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which ifay lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horns for • ~ purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 5090 WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 30, 1871. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MR. W. D. BUBNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. *#* Whenever it is desired that any person should bo appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor mast be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, " War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. Thring, Esq., Egham, was entered by the drawing room window, which was left open, and a carriage Clock and Case stolen therein. Also from the laundry, the same night : 5 calico Shirts, linen fronts, ' H. Tiiring,' marked in ink. 1 night Shirt, marked ' H. Thring, 1 linen Table Cloth, snowdrop pattern. 1 ditto ditto, shamrock pattern, marked ' H. Thring, 1868.' 1 linen Sheet, marked ' H. Thring, 1 calico ditto, marked ' H. Shring, 2 Blankets, marked Mrs. Card well, " I" in red worsted. 1 new brown print Skirt. 1 body of Dress. Information to be given to Superintendent Hollington, Chertsey; or to Inspector Gray, Egham, Surrey.— Bow- street, August 25. During the night of the 10th instant, the premises of Messrs. Raffety and Son, 11, High- street, High Wycombe, were broken and entered, and stolen from an iron safe, three Cash Boxes, containing three Cheques, three Notes, £ 30 in Gold and Silver, and a quantity of valuable Documents. £ 25 Description of a person who calls himself ERNST j reward will be paid to any person giving such information as LANFRIED, apparently an American German, who on the ; shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender 11th instant entered the Ulster Bank at Belfast, and having ! or offenders. Description of the money paid him : ten Notes of Ulster Bank for £ 100 each, one ditto for £ 20, one ditto for £ 10, and five ditto for £ 5. A warrant has been issued against him. Information to be given to Deputy Inspector- General Hillier, Constabulary Office, Dublin Castle. — Bow- street, August 21. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of a gentleman at Margate Races, on the 21st instant : a large Swiss keyless half hunter gold Watch, with heavy case, and a gold albert Chain, had a gold Seal with white stone and a Locket attached to it. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Stokes, Kent County Con- stabulary, Sandwich.— Bow- street, August 25. Stolen from the person of a gentleman, during the night of the 17th instant : a gold lever hunting Watch, maker Corney, Cheapside, London, No. 5424, with a massive gold Chain attached. £ 3 3s. reward will be paid on the appre- hension of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the stolen property. Information to be given to Head Constable Jarrett, Police Office, Hertford.— Bow- street, August 23. Stolen from the person at Oxford Races, oil the 17th and 18th instant : A gold lever Watch, open face, Liverpool maker. A single- cased silver lever Watch, has the glass cracked, name inside watch ' Taylor, Banbury.' A single- cased silver lever Watch, maker Bull, Mount street, Grosvenor- square, Loudon. A double- cased silver lever Watch, maker Miles, Thame, Oxon, ' J. H.' stamped inside of cases. A gold English lever Wateh, maker Rowell, Oxford, marked ' J. C. R.' outside case. A common silver Geneva Watch. A Pocket- book, containing about £ 40 in Notes and some Memoranda ; one is a Bradford Note for £ 5, tl; e remainder Bank of England Notes. Information to be given to Superintendent Head, Police Office, Oxford.— Bow- street, August 21. red spots ; a black billycock Hat, wire brim ; a pair of Spectacles, silver frames, in a light wood case ; j lb. of Tea, paper marked ' Abberley and Deighton, Knighton ;' and a large loaf of Bread. Suspicion is attached to two tramps, who were seen near the house about 11 p. m. on the 18th inst.: one about 5 feet 10 inches high ; the other about 5 feet 7 ins. high; both wore dark jackets. Information to be given to Superintendent Baxter, County Constabulary, Church Stretton, Salop.— Bow- street, August 21. Stolen between 11' 30 a. m. and 5' 30 p. m. on the 17th inst., from No. 28, Hythe- bridge- street, Oxford, by forcing the back window with a jemmy, which was left behind in the house a single case gold lever Watch ; a gold albert Chain with two Lockets, and Punch and Judy Key attached ; " Presented from George Winteringham and J. Watson to George Noble, as a mark of respect for good conduct and ability as a jockey, April lst, 1863," engraved inside watch. Supposed by two men of the following description seen loitering near the house at about 2 p. m. on the same day : one about 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, dark complexion, light brown hair; dressed in black, with high black hat ; the other, 28 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, light complexion, hair, and whiskers; Information to be given to Superintendent Head, Police Office, Oxford.— Bow- street, August 21. on the night of the 16th instant, the property of Mr. James Marshall: a brown Pony, aged, about 14 hands high, in low condition, two broken knees, tail rather short, off knee enlarged from a kick. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Osborn or Inspector Packer, Police Station, Towcester, Northamptonshire.— Bow- street, August 28. Stolen on the night or early on the morning of the 20th instant, from two adjoining fields on the Thorne- road, in the neighbourhood of Doncaster : two Mares, one a strong bay coaching Mare, 16 hands high, 6 years old, fired slightly on both hocks for curbs, with the hip of the off side knocked off, star on the forehead, one hind leg swollen, the property of Mr. Asce, Salutation Inn, Doncaster ; the other is a strong bay Cob, 14J hands high, 5 years old, white hind fetlock, thick mane and tail, scar on the off side of the rump, fore feet shod with leather : the property of Mr. Meacock, Doncaster. Information to be given to Superintendent Astwood, West Riding Constabulary, Doncaster; or to Sergeant Cockcroft, Police Station, Hatfield, near Doncaster.— Bow- street, Aug. 25. Stolen from a field at Red Hill, in the township of Castle- ford, Yorkshire : a white mare Pony, aged, about 13 hands high, in fair condition, short tail, and rather rough mane, the property of Mr. Austin, Maltster. Information to be given to Superintendent Hall, West Riding Constabulary, Ponte- fract; or to Inspector Beevers, Castleford. — Bow- street* August 25. Stolen about 11 ' 30 a. m. on the 21st instant, at Summer- street, Southwark Bridge- road : a Horse and Van, containing 18 sacks of Oats, horse black, white star on face, rat tail, harness brass mounted, van since found. By a man, 36 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, stout, dark complexion ; dressed in white slop, dark trousers, and billycock ; right foot appears sore.— Metropolitan Police, M Division, August 25. Stolen between the 9th and 13th instant, from Bryants- puddle Heath, in the parish of Affpuddle, in the county of Dorset: two South Down Ewe Sheep, marked with the- letter ' M' <>•> 1- ne near or left side, or else on the pin fide or shoulder, the property of Lawrence Mitchell, ot Bryants- puddle Farm* Information to be given to Superintendent Eeles, Dorset Constabulary, Wareham.— Bow- street, Auq. 21. Stolen from a field at Milsom, during the night of the 16th instant : two Cows, two dark brown barren, one with white face, the other mottled face, in good condition, and one Milch Cow, dark red with white face and knobs on horns, all three years of age, the property of Mr. Rogers. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Ivins, Bridgnorth, or to Sergeant Collis, Police Station, Cleobury Mortimer, Salop,— Bow- street, August 21. BURGLARY AID HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen from the dwelling- house of Mr. Newell Blanchard, of Longfleet, in the borough of Poole, between 6' 30 and 8 p. m. on the 20th instant, by means of housebreaking, the following property : three silver table Spoons, one new and two old ; two silver dessert Spoons, with crest engraved— Hand holding a Serpent; plain silver Spoon; two new silver salt Spoons; HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Pound, supposed to have been stolen, on the 25th inst., in the parish of Harlow : a black Mare, aged, about 14 hands high, loug tail down to the hocks, a few white saddle marks, and blind in near eye. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Simpson, Police Station, Epping, Essex.— Bow- street, August 30. Stolen from a field at Thack Thwaite, near Wigton, during the night of the 24th instant, the property of Mr. Watson, Bolton Park : nine white- faced cheviot Hogs, nearly fat, marked upon rump and shoulder with a round red pop, newly dipped. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Spence, Wigton, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle. - Bow- street, August 30. Stolen between 8 p. m. 011 the 23rd, and 7 a. m. on the 24th instant, from Elm Farm, Common . Road, Sutton : a dark brown mare, 7 years old, 14£ hands high, long black mane and tail, both hind heels white, thick set, in good condition. — Metropolitan Police, W Division, August 30. Stolen on the 18th instant, from a field at Ledbury, Here- ford : a black horse Pony, 6 years old, 13 hands high, white star on forehead and small blaze down face, short tail, and in low condition, the property of Mr. Thomas Mays, butcher, Ledbury. Information to be given to Superintendent Blnnsdon, Police Office, Ledbury.— Bow- street, August 28. Stolen from a field in the parish of Weston- by- Weedon, LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Absconded from Wrington on the 5th instant, charged with stealing the Materials for nine pairs of ladies' kid Boots, which had been entrusted to him to make up, the property of Messrs. Bartlett Brothers, Wrington : JOHN FARRANT, alias POWELL, shoemaker, about 30 years of age, abfu- t 5 feet 7 inches high, short, dark hair, no whiskers, walfeg; erectly, and is rather deaf; is well known at Taunton and' Bristol, and is supposed to be a native of Monmouthshire. Information to be given to Superintendent Gillbanks, Somerset Constabulary Office, Axbridge, who holds a wairant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, August 30. Absconded about the 19th instant, charged OH a warrant with embezzling £ 10 : WILLIAM BRIEN, 26 or 27 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, fair complexion, dark hair, no whiskers, has a large scar under the ear, from a burn ; dressed in black frock coat, imitation seal- skin vest ( very much worn,) and high black hat. Information to be given to Inspector Bailey, City of London Police, Detective Department, 26, Old Jewry, E. C.— Bow- street, August 30. Stolen during the night of the 26th instant, front a dwelling- house at Bellerby, in the North Riding of Yorkshire,, four £ 5 Notes of the Swaledale and Wensleydale Banking Company, and £ 3 in Gold, the property of Mr. Isaac Spence : by a man, 20 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, fair complexion, light hair, and slightly pockmarked ; dressed in an old black cloth coat and cap, light trousers, and lace- up boots ; he was worked at ironworks in the county of Durham and the North Riding of Yorkshire. Information to be given to Superintendent Stelling, North Riding Constabulary, Leyburn.— Bow- street, August 30. Description of WILLIAM RUSSELL, a native of Gloucester, who absconded on the 27th instant, charged ( with another man in custody) with stealing from the ' Vauxhall' inn, two gallons of Rum and two gallons of Wine : he is about 36 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, middle size, long features, sallow complexion, one or two front teeth missing, dark brown hair and whiskers, bow- legged, splay footed, and walks erect; dressed in hard black bowler hat, dark mixture suit of clothes. He is a skittle and card sharper, well known in Cardiff, Bristol, Bath, Worcester, Birmingham, and other large towns, and will frequent the principal skittle alleys, and play and bet in the game. £ 1 reward and all expenses will be paid to any person giving such information as will lead to his apprehension. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Griffin, Police Office, Gloucester.— Bow- street, August 30. Description of JOHN NOTT, traveller in wines and spirits, who has absconded from Worcester, charged with > 2 POLICE G A Z E T T E. August 30. having embezzled various sums of money from his employer, Mr. Alfred P. Watkins : he is from 50 to 55 years of age, about 5 feet 10 inches high, stout, stoops slightly, small grey whiskers, and grey hair; generally dresses in grey clothes, and grey wide- awake or alpine hat, has the appearance of a farmer. Information to be given to the City of Worcester Police, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.—- Bow- street, Description of JOHN DODDS, charged with stealing a silver lever Watch and other articles ( all recovered), the pro- perty of James Jessup, at Althorpe, on the night of the lOtli instant : he is a basket maker, and occasionally works on wharves, and is a native of Hull; 23 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, light hair and complexion, and of slight build ; dressed in a white cotton jacket, dark vest, old blue cloth trousers, torn at the seat and knees, dark cap, and pld lace- up boots. Information to be given to Inspector Truelove, Police Station, Epworth, Lincolnshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, August 28. Stolen from a dwelling- house at Hurstpierpoint, Sussex, on the 19th instant: a single- case German silver Watch, and £ 2 6s. in Gold and Silver. By HENRY TOMLIN, a lodger, who has absconded, 24 years of age, about 5 feet 2 inches high, dark complexion, hair, whiskers, and moustache, both very slight, stout made, single, and a tailor by trade; dressed in dark coat and vest, brown cloth trousers, and black billy- cock hat. His father is living at Bletchingly, Surrey, also a tailor. Tomlin took a ticket on the 19th instant, at Hassack's Gate for London BridgejStation, and he is supposed to be in London. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Lewes, or to Sergeant Pocock, Cuckfield, Sussex, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, August 25. Absconded from March, on the 23rd instant, SARAH MASON, housekeeper to Mr. John Payne, of March, butcher, charged with stealing three Crown Pieces ard other silver Coins, to the amount of £ 2, the property of the said Jolm Payne : she is about 35 years of age, tall, pale complexion, dark brown hair, has a wart on the right side of her face, and wears false teeth, except one in front, which is very prominent; dressed in black dress, bonnet, and shawl. Information to be given to Superintendent Lees, March, Cambridgeshire, who holds a warrant for her apprehension.-— Bow- street, August 25. Stolen from the dwelling- house of Thomas Hills, Grays, on the 19th instant, the following property : a black cloth Overcoat, pockets outside, lavender colour lining with black stripes ; a pair of blucher Boots, patch on side; a blue striped shirt, half new sleeves; a white cotton Shirt with mark of paint on left shoulder; and a piece of Bacon. By GEORGE NEALE, alias GEORGE SMITH, 26 years of age, about 5 feet 3 inches high, slender make, whiskers shaved off, hare or cut lip ; dressed in white jacket, brown trousers, billycock hat, and blucher boots. Supposed to be in the neighbourhood of Clapham. Information to be given to Inspector Freeman, Police Station, Orsett, or to Police Constable ( 195) Pratt, Grays, Essex, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, August 25. Description of ROBERT GEBBIE, a native of Auchin- leck, Ayrshire, charged with embezzlement from the Com- mercial Bank of Scotland at Callander, in the county of Perth: he is about 25 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, dark hair, dark brown whiskers, small, and far back on cheeks, beard shaved oft', full face, fresh complexion, good- looking, stout make, round shoulders, stoops forward a little ; dressed in blue corded short square coat, shepherds' tartan trousers, light leather boots, with elastic sides, and low black felt hat; he absconded from Callander on the 3rd instant, and was en in Glasgow next day. Information to be given to the rocurator- Fiscal, Dunblane, or to Superintendent Stewart, Perthshire Police, Dunblane, who holds a Sheriff's warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, August 25. Description of JOHN LEATH, charged with embezzling various sums of Money, the property of his master Thomas Mayo, baker, Camp Hill, Birmingham : he is about 25 years of age, 4 feet 10 inches high, dark eyes, complexion, and hair, slight beard and moustache, stout built, walks very quick ; dressed when he left in black cloth suit, tall hat, and patent leather boots ; by trade a baker. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Glossop, Birmingham, who holds a warrant for his arrest.— Bow- street, August 25. Stolen at Birling, Kent, on the 21st instant: two pea Jackets, belonging to labouring men, much worn ; an old military Overcoat ; a Scythe and Cradle ; an old rush Basket; two old pairs of Trousers; two old Caps ; and a white Slop. By two soldiers, belonging to the 48th Regiment of Foot, stationed at Chatham, and who had been harvesting on the farm from which the articles were stolen. Information to be given to Superintendent Hulse, Kent County Constabulary, West Mailing.— Bow- street, August 23. - Stolen from the dwelling- house of Thomas Bailey, of Aston Tollgate, near Stone, on the 21st instant : a large verge Watch, silver case, chipped a little on the face, had a steel Chain attached, maker Morris, Stone. By a tramp who was on his way from Stone, about 27 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, thin pale face, no whiskers; dressed in a long black coat, grey- coloured cap and clogs ; last seen on his way for Stafford. Information to be given to Superintendent Crisp, Stone, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, August 23. Stolen on the 21st instant, at Dover : a silver lever Watch, maker Bennett, London, minute hand bent; a black leather Purse, containing 19s. ; a black Coat and Vest ; a pair of plain tweed Trousers; a pair of grey worsted Stockings; a pair of sidespring Boots; arid a black deerstalker hat. By a soldier of the 67th Regiment, who left his uniform behind, and is supposed to be wearing the ' stolen property. Informa- tion to be given to Head Constable Coram, Police Station, Dover.— Bow- street, August 23. Description of JOSEPH BROTHWOOD, formerly a schoolmaster at Kington, Herefordshire, and lately a traveller for Mr. Alfred Powell Watkins, wine merchant, of Worcester, charged with embezzling various sums of money : 40 to 45 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, fresh complexion, long bushy whiskers and moustache, well built, and of gentlemanly appearance ; he is known in Breconshire and Radnorshire, and was seen in Gloucester about 3 weeks ago. Information to be given to Superintendent Blossett, Kington, Hereford- shire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, August 21. A Cash- box was stolen, on the evening of the 18th inst., from the counter of a shop in Brighton, which contained between £ 45 and £ 55, consisting of a £ 10 Union ( Local) Bank Note, a £ 5 Bank of England Note, and the remainder in Gold and Silver; a gold mourning Ring, with ' In memory' in black letters on the outside, and ' Henry Weston' on the inside. By two men ; one about 32 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, short light brown hair, short curly beard and moustache of same colour, fresh complexion, round face, stout, and well built ; dres: ed in light brown loose coat, light brown low- crowned hat, and check trousers : the other about 46 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 i;: ches high, stout make, broad shouldered, long thin nose ; dresred in a suit of dark clothes. Supposed to be in company with two otlier men. Information to be given to Chief Constable White, Brighton, Sussex.— Bow- st., August 21. \ Stolen on the 13 th instant at West Barnby, in the North Riding of Yorkshire, the property of Thomas Boyes : a silver lever Watch, No. 23792, steel Chain, with brass Key and Seal attached ; also a blue pilot cloth Jacket, man's size, pockets outside and supposed one in left, breast, black velvet collar. By MARSHALL BOYES, alias ISAAC WILSON, 25 years of age, 5 feet 8 inch, s high, fresh Complexion, ginger hair aud reddish moustache, i- mall features, aiSi&- rather good looking • dressed in the stolen jacket, dark imxture trousers, black or blue cheesecutter cap, new lace- up Boots and military socks; belongs to the 34th Regt. of Foot. Information to be given to Superintendent Clarkson, North Riding Constabulary, Whitby.— Bow- street, August 21. Stolen on the morning of the 19th inst., from the lodging- house of Thomas Restill, at Ledbury, the following articles, viz. : one pair of Bedford cord Trousers, lining been mended inside the stride, two small holes outside the stride ; one Bedford cord Vest, with three pockets, and torn under right arm ; and two pairs of blue worsted militia Socks, one pair No. 716, and the other 245, or 254.
