The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signals re of the porson requiring or sending the some, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MB. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with tho Ad vertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, aU betters addressed to the Editor sstsifst toe prepaid, otherwise the insertion will nof - be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from tho regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY Description of a man charged with manslaughter at Chester : about 30 years of age, about 6 feet high, slender, small whiskers, thin face; dressed in black billycock hat, sleeved vest, cashmere iu front and moleskin back, and cotton cord trousers ; has lately been employed ou board the Shrop- shire Union Canal Company's boat ' Woodcock,' and is well known at Wolverhampton, Shrewsbury, Wellington, Trench, and along the canal generally, by tbe nickname of BIG MAT ; was in the Shrewsbury Infirmary a few months ago jvith a bad leg, and has served a short time in the Army. Informa- tion to be given to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Chester. - Bow- street, August 16. Description of a man in custody iu Coventry, charged with maliciously cutting and wounding one John Ryley, with intent, & c., and it is believed he has committed offences else- where : WILLIAM SMITH, a navvy, 19 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, dark brown hair, hazel eyes, sallow com- plexion, no whiskers, scar from a burn under right arm, scar from kicks on right jaw and over right eye, and from a severe cut oil middle finger of left hand ; dressed in a white slop, woollen cord trousers, flannel shirt, heavy lace- up boots, aud plaid cap ; states he has been employed by Mr. Smith, farmer, and Mr. Brown, coal merchant at Romford, Essex, also at Gateshead, Durham, and South Wales. Information to be given to Chief Constable Norris, City of Coventry.— Bow- street, August 16. A single- cased silver lever Watch, has the glass cracked, name inside watch 1 Taylor, Banbury.' A single- cased silver lever Watch, maker Bull, Mount- street, Grosvenor- square, London. A double- cased silver lever Watch, maker Miles, Thame, Oxoii, ' J. H.' stamped inside of cases. A gold English lever Watch, maker Rowell, Oxford, marked ' J. C. B.' outside case. A. common silver Geneva Watch. A Pocket- book, containing about £ 40 in Notes and some Memoranda ; one is a Bradford Note for £ H, the remainder Bank of England Notes. Stolen from the person of John Reece, in Middlesbrough, on the 12tli instant: a silver lever stop Watch, white dial, black fiiguves, No. 6116, maker Cattanneo, Stockton. Infor- mation to be given to Chief Constable Saggerson, Borough Police Station, Middlesbrough.— Bow- street, August 1C. Stolen from the person of a gentleman on the road between Wythop and Embleton, in the county of Cumberland, between 3 and 4 p. m. on the 7th instant: a gold lever Watch, plain white dial, steel hands, a piece broken off the large pointer, maker ' John Graham, Liverpool' on the dial, also upon the works inside of watch. Information to be given to Superintendent Robinson, Cockermouth ; or at the Office of the County Chief Constable, Carlisle.— Bow- street, August 14. Stolen from the persons of gentlemen at Ripon Races, ou the 7th and 8th instant : A silver lever Watch, silver flowered face, guilt figures, steel hands, ' Benn' engraved on the back of the inside case. A silver Geneva Watch, No. 7931, ' Spence' scratched inside of case, a twisted wire gold- plated Guard attached. A silver Geneva Watch, a name scratched inside of case with ' Topcliff' underneath it, had attached a small gold- plated albeit Guard. This watch was stolen by a man of the following description, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 ins. high, no whiskers ; dressed in dark coat, grey trousers, and round- topped black hard hat, « « pposed a tailor Toy trade. Information to be given to Superintendent Burniston, City Police Office, Ripon.— Bow- street, August 14. men's elastic- side Boots, one pair with buttons on the sides, the other nearly new; two white cotton Shirts, plaited fronts ; and a white flannel Shirt. The offenders are supposed to be wearing the stolen clothing, as several old coats and other articles were left behind. Information to be given to Superintendent Gillbanks, Somerset Constabulary Office, Axbridge.— Bmo- streel, August 16. Between 10 p. m. on the 11th, and 8 a. m. on the 12th instant, the house of Mr. Wm. Hughs, St. John's, Sevenoaks, was burglariously entered, and the following- property stolen therein : ail electro plated tea Pot; a coffee ditto ; two cream Jugs ; a small claret Jug; six small table Spoons ; twelve dessert Spoons ; twelve large Forks ; a small ditto ; a soup Ladle ; two small ditto ; a gravy Spoon ; a butter Knife ; eleven tea Spoons ; six egg ditto ; four salt ditto; two napkin Rings, initials ' W. P.' H.' on one, and ' E. L. II.' on the other ; two knife Rests ; two pairs of nut Crackers ; one pair of ice Tongs ; four salt Cellars ; and a mustard Pot, all electro- plated ; two fish Knives and Forks ; two dessert Knives ; twenty- four large Knives, with ivory handles ; twenty- three small ditto, maker Lowcock, Cornhill. Information to bo given to Superintendent Colman, Police Court, Sevenoaks, Kent.— Bow- street, August 14. On the 7th instant, the dwelliug- house of Mr. Robert Charles James Rees, No. 4, Burlington- road, Ipswich, was entered by means of skeleton keys, and the following property stolen therein : about £ 14 in Gold and Silver; a gentleman's chased gold Ring, with spring, enclosing a portrait of a little girl; a reversible gold Ring, with cornelian stone on one side, and set with pearl on reverse side ; a gold Brooch for likeness ; an old- fashioned pair- case silver Watch ; a pinchbeck Watch ; and two watch Guards, one gold, aud one silver. Information to be given to Head Constable Mason, Town Hall, Ipswich. — Bow- street, August 14. On the night of the 8th inst., the house of Mr, T. Woodvelle, of Saint Martins, Salop, was broken into and stolen therein : three silver tea Spoons, marked ' T. J. W. ;' one black winsey Dress ; one blue cotton Shirt ; three linen Collars ; two pairs of woollen Stockings ; one pair of men's cotton Drawers ; all dirty and tied up in a bundle Hankerchief. Information to be given to Superintendent Gough, Oswestry, Salop.— Bow- st., FORGEiiir. Description of a person who calls himself ERNST LANFRIED, apparently an American German, who on the 11th instant entered the Ulster Bank at Belfast, and having produced a draught purporting to be from the Bank of Ireland, on the Bank of England at London, for £ 2000, obtained the amount in the following manner : £ 1036 5s. in Notes and Silver, a Draft of the Ulster Bank, Belfast, on the city of Glasgow Bank for £ 1000, and an Ulster Bank Deposit Receipt for £ 963. Ou the 15th instant, it was discovered that the aforesaid Bank of Ireland Draft of London was issued for £ 2, and that the Said Ernst Lanfried, did knowingly and feloniously, alter, forge, aud utter the said order from £ 2 to £ 3000, with iutent to defraud the Ulster Bank. Police Officers iu Great Britain and Ireland are requested to use their best endeavours to arrest the said Lanfried, and to communicate with the Ulster Bank, Belfast, should he be arrested : he is from 30 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fair complexion, but sunburnt, brown hair, had a shaven face, with whiskers about a weeks' growth, speaks with au American accent. Description of the money paid him : ten Notes of Ulster Bank for £ 100 each, one ditto for £ 20, one ditto for £ 10, and five ditto for £ 5. A warrant has been issued against him. Information to be given to Deputy Inspector- General Hillier, Constabulary Office, Dublin Castle. •— Bow- street, August 21. 3UE6LAEY AIS HOUSE BREAKIFG. During the night of the 10th instant, the premises of Messrs. Raffety and Son, 11, High- street, High Wycombe, were broken and entered, and stolen from an iron safe, three Cash Boxes, containing three Cheques, three Notes, £ 30 in Gold and Silver, and a quantity of valuable Documents. £ 25 reward will be paid to any person giving such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to the Superintendent of Police, High Wycombe, Bucks. - Bvw- stmi, August 21. Between 12- 15 p. m. 18tli and 5 a. m. on the 19th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. John Davies, of Pentrehodre, iu the parish of Clun, in the county of Salop, was burglariously entered, aud the following Property stolen therein: three plain silver Tea Spoons, marked ' M. E.;' a pail- of strong lace- up Boots, with brass eyelet- holes, seven rows of nails crossways on soles, and eight nails in each row; a pair of light lace- up Boots, with brass eyelet holes, and nailed round heels ; a pair of light Boots, elastic- sides, the}' are all men's sizes and nearly new ; a dark grey cloth Overcoat, pockets ou each side, and one inside left breast, lined with black ribbed serge, nearly new ; a dark grey cloth Jackct, intermixed with red spots ; a black billycock Hat, wire brim ; a pair of Spectacles, silver frames, in a light wood case ; | lb. of Tea, paper marked ' Abberley and Deighton, Knighton;' and a large loaf of Bread. Suspicion is attached to two tramps, who were seen near the house about 11 p. m. on the 18th inst.: one about 5 feet 10 inches high ; the other about 5 feet 7 ins. high ; both wore dark jackets. Information to be given to Superintendent Baxter, Comity Constabulary, Church Stretton, Salop.— Bow- street, August 21. Stolen from a house at Monton, by means of house- breaking, between 6 a, nd 9 p. m. on the 6th instant, the following property : a silver snuff Box, with the inscription thereon ' Presented to Brother Henry Buxton, by the Officers aud Members of the Rose of the Park Lodge,' and has a crest with 1H. O. B.' oil front side ; a gold detached lever Watch, capped and jewelled, gold dial, with figure of a sportsman shooting in a field engraved upon it, maker A- Heslop, Liver- pool ; a small- sized silver lover Watch, frosted silver dial, maker Forbes, has engraved oil outer case ' T. B.' in German text; a gold Bracelet, heart pendant, with garnet stone setting on one side, aud a place for hair on the othei ; a lady's gold Chain, link pattern ; a ditto, chain pattern ; two gold Rings, set with hair ; a plain gold Brooch, set with amber stone ; a toj toiseshell cigar Case, with silver plate, on which is engraved ' T. Buxton.' The following description of a mau is suspected : about 25 years of age, 5 feet 6£ inches high ; dressed in black cloth coat, rounded off at the skirts, brown trousers, and black billycock hat. £ 5 reward will be paid for recovery of the property and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to the Superintendent, County Police Office, Old Trafford, near Manchester.— Bow street, August 14. HORSE AMD CATTLE STEALING. Stolen from the South Bank, Whittlesey, oil or about the 12th instant: five yearling Calves, of a reddish colour ( sup- posed to be two heifers and three steers), all have a piece cut out under the off ear, and the horns of one grow backwards. £ 2 reward will be paid ou conviction of the offender and recovery of the property, by Mr. Chas. Hopper, of Whittlesey, the owner. Information to be given to Superintendent Smith, Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire.— Bow- street, August 23. ROBBERY AlfD LARCEIY TMQW THE Stolen from the person of a gentleman, during the night, of the 17th instant : a gold lever hunting Watch, maker Corney, Cheapsidc, London, No. 5424, with a massive gold Chain attached. £ 3 3s. reward will be paid on the appre- hension of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the stolen property. I nformation to be given to Head Constable Jarrett, Police Office, Hertford.— Bow- street, August 23. Stolen from the person at Oxford Races, oil the 17tli and 18th instant : A gold lever Watch, qpen face. Liverpool maker. Stolen between 11- 30 a. m. and 5- 30p. m. on the 17th inst., from No. 28, Hythe- bridge- streel, Oxford, by forcing the back window with a jemmy, which was left behind in the house : a single case gold lever Watch ; a gold albert Chain with two Lockets, and Punch and Judy Key attached; " Presented from George Winteringham aud J. Watson to George Noble, as a mark of respect for good conduct and ability as a jockey, April lst, 1863," engraved inside watch. Supposed by two men of the following description seen loitering near the house at about 2 p. m. oil the same day : one about 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, dark complexion, light brown hair; dressed in black, with high black hat ; the other, 28 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, light complexion, hair, and whiskers; Information to be given to Superintendent Head, Police Office, Oxford.— Bow- street, August 21. Stolen by means of housebreaking, from the dwelling- house of Mr. Richard Shephard, of East Brent, between 12 midnight on the 8 th and 5 a. m. on the 9 th instant: an Overcoat, black and brown cloth with grey stripe, two pockets outside skirts, and one outside right breast , a grey mixture tweed loose Jacket, two pockets outside skirts, aud one inside left breast, containing a small Pocket- book, with the names of John Deacon. Burnham aud George Miles Burnham ; a light drab summer cloth Coat, pockets outside ; a thick brown and black mixture cloth Yest. single- breasted ; two pairs of Stolen from Fenstanton, on the night of the 19th instant, the property of Robert Chambers : a brown horse Pony, 4 years old, about 13 hands high, black legs, mane, and tail, has a small knot, about half the size of a nut, inside the near knee, broad ears, long neck, and iu good condition. Informa- tion to lie given to Superintendent Spencer, St. Ives, Hunts. — Bow- street, August 23. Stolen between the 9th and 13th instant, from, Bryants- puddle Heath, iu the parish of Affpuddle, iu the county of Dorset: two South Down Ewe Sheep, marked with the letter ' M' on the near or left side, or else ou the pin side or shoulder, the property of Lawrence Mitchell, of Bryants- puddle Farm. Information to be given to Superintendent Eeles, Dorset Constabulary, Warcham.— Bow- street, Aug. 21. Stolen from a field at Milsom, during the night of the 16th instant : two Cows, two dark brown barren, one with white face, the other mottled face, in good condition, and one Milch Cow, dark red with white face anrl knobs on horns, all three years of age, tho property of Mr. Rogers. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Ivins, Bridgnorth, or to Sergeant Collin, Police Station, Cleobury Mortimer, Salop.— Bow- street, August 21. Stolen from a field at Foy, on the night, of the 11th inst.: three store Ewes, of the Cotswold breed, marked ' J. B.' on right hip, the property of Mr. Bennett, farmer. Information to be given to Superintendent Cope, Ross, Herefordshire — Boxo- street, August 18. Stolen from a field at Great Lever, near Bolton, Lancashire, during the night of the 8th instant, a light bay Gelding, rising 3 years old, a white mark down the face, white hind legs, cut mark inside the near thigh about three inches long, a scar on front of near hind leg above the fetlock joint, and long tail. It was seen going through the Pendleton Toll- bar, in the direction of Manchester, at a quarter past four on the morning of the 9th instant, with a man about 50 years of age, about 5 feet 9 inches high, and whiskers turning grey ; dressed in dark clothes, and soft billycock hat. £ 5 reward will be paid to any person who will give such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the Gelding, on application to Superintendent Holland, County Constabulary, Town Hall, Little Bolton. - Bow- street, August 18. Stolen on the 12tli instant, from. Windsor : a Horse and Cab, horse a grey Mare, scar on off knee, 15 hands ; Bridle mounted in brass ( game cock); cab green. By a man, 50 years of age, 5 feet 8J inches high ; dressed in breeches, white stockings, lace boots, white jacket, and black billycock hat. Information to be given at the Police Station, Rochester- row, London.— Brno- street, Atigust 18. Stolen from the Stone Farm, in the parish of Pencombe, in the county of Hereford, on the night of the 2nd instant : eight Lambs, three- part bred Leicesters, ruddle marked on . the shoulders, and a notch cut in the under side of their near ears, the property of J. H. Arkwright, Esq, of Hampton Court. Whoever will give such information as will lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders, on application to Mr. William Drayman, the bailiff, Stone Farm, Pencombe, will be rewarded. Information to be given to Superintendent Harwood, Bromyard, Hereford.— Bow- street, August 16. IAECEIY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Stolen at Birling, Kent, on the 21st instant: two pea Jackets, belonging to labouring men, much worn ; an old military Overcoat ; a Scythe and Cradle ; an old rush Basket; two old pairs of Trousers; two old Caps ; and a white Slop. By two soldiers, belonging to the 48th Regiment of Foot, stationed at Chatham, and who had been harvesting on the farm from which the articles were, stolen. Information to be given to Superintendent Hulse, Kent County Constabulary, West Mailing.— Bow- street, August 23. Stolen from the dwelling- house of Thomas Bailey, of Aston Tollgate, near Stone, on the 21st instant : a large verge Watch, silver case, chipped a little on the face, had a steel Chain attached, maker Morris, Stone. By a tramp who was on his way from Stone, about 27 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, thin pale face, no whiskers ; dressed in a long black coat, grey- coloured cap and clogs ; last seen on his way for Stafford. Information to be given to Superintendent Crisp, Stone, Staffordshire.—- Bow- street, August 23. Stolen on the 21st instant, at Dover : a silver lever Watch, maker Bennett, London, minute hand bent; a black leather Purse,. containing 19s.; a black Coat and Vest; a pair of plain tweed Trousers; a pair of grey worsted Stockings; a pair of sidespring Boots ; and a black deerstalker hat. By a soldier of the 67th Regiment, who left his uniform behind, and is supposed to be wearing the stolen property. Informa- tion to be given to Head Constable Coram, Police Station, Dover.— Bow- street, August 23. ' REGINALD ALLEN, alias CLAVAUX, alias HAR- DING, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 4tli instant, has been apprehended in Hastings, and sentenced to 4 months imprisonment in Lewes Gaol.— Bou - street, August 23. Description of JOSEPH BROTHWOOD, formerly a schoolmaster at Kington, Herefordshire, and lately a traveller for Mr. Alfred Powell Watkins, wine merchant, of Worcester, charged with embezzling various sums of money : 40 to 45 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, fresh complexion, long bushy whiskers and moustache, well built, and of gentlemanly appearance ; he is known in Breconshire and Radnorshire, and was seen in Gloucester about 3 weeks ago. Information to be given to Superintendent Blossett, Kington, Hereford- Shire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, Ail- gmt 21. A Cash- box was stolen, on the evening of the 18tli inst, from the counter of a shop in Brighton, which contained between £ 45 and £ 55, consisting of a £ 10 Union ( Local) Bank Note, a £ 5 Bank of England Note, and the remainder iu Gold and Silver; a gold mourning Ring, with ' In memory1 in black letters on the outside, and ' Henry Weston' on the inside. By two men ; one about 32 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, short light brown hair, short curly beard and moustache of same colour, fresh complexion, round face, stout, and well built ; dressed in light brown loose eoat, light brown low- crowned hat, and check trousers : the other about 46 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, stout make, broad shouldered, long thin nose ; dressed in a suit of dark clothes. Supposed to be in company with two other men. Information to be given to Chief Constable White, Brighton, Sussex.— Bow- st,, August 21. Stolen on the 13th instant at West Barnby, in the North Riding of Yorkshire, the property of Thomas Boyes : a silver lever Watch, No. 23792, steel Chain, with brass Key and Seal attached ; also a blue pilot cloth Jacket, man's size, pockets outside and supposed one in left breast, black velvet collar. By MARSHALL BOYES, alias ISAAC WILSON, 25 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fresh complexion, ginger hair and reddish moustache, small features, and rather good looking ; dressed in the stolen jacket, dark mixture trousers, black or blue cheesecutter cap, new lace- up boots and military socks; belongs to the 34tli Regt. of Foot. Information to be given to Superintendent Clarkson, North Riding Constabulary, Whitby.— Bow- street, August 21. Stolen, on the morning of tbe 19t. h inst, from the lodging- house of Thomas Restill, at Ledbury, the following articles, yiz. : one pair of Bedford cord Trousers, lining been mended inside the stride, two small holes outside the stride ; one Bedford cord Vest, with three pockets, and torn under right arm; aud two pairs of blue worsted militia Socks, one pair No. 716, and the other 245, or 254. By au Irishman, about 28 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, thin face, pock- pitted, little or no whiskers, small tuft of sandy hair on chin, and small sore on lip ; dressed in an old black coat, black and white plaid trousers, old shoes cut up the fronts, and blaek cap. Information to be given to Superintendent Blunsden, Ledbury, Herefordshire.— Bcv- street, August 21. Description of ANDREW AGNEW ROBERTSON, who absconded from Peterborough on the 10th instant, charged on a warrant with feloniously embezzling various sums of Money to the amount of £ 5, the property of his employer, Mr. James McCullum Craig, draper : 21 years of age,. 5 feet 8 inches high, light complexion, grey eyes, red hair,'- atiaa native of Ayrshire, Scotland ; has in his posses- sion a pedlar's certificate granted on the 5th June, 1871, for this district. Information to be given to Superintendent Brooke, Constabulary Office, Peterboroug, Northamptonshire. — Bow- street, August 18. Description of JAMES ROBERTSON, who absconded from Peterborough, on the 12th instant, charged on a warrant with stealing from his master, Mr. James McCallum Craig, Shawls, Jackets, Vests, Petticoats, Dresses, Stuffs, Lustres, Winseys, and Lenos : he is about 55 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, small face, large nose, small grey eyes, looks from under his eyebrows, dark brown hair and whiskers, just turning grey, stoops a little, and is a native of Scotland; dressed in black silk hat, mottled coat, dark vest, black trousers, and black silk scarf, with pin containing red stone, and dark woollen shirt; supposed gone to Manchester. Has in his possession a pedlar's Certificate, granted 7th January, 1871, for Twickenham, in the county of Middlesex. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Brook, Constabulary Office, Peterborough, Northamptonshire.— Bow- street, Aug. 18. Description of THOMAS E.
