CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received in eases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 5075 WEDNESDAY, JULY 26, 1871. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to ME. W. D. BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. *** Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all betters addressed to the Editor IXIMSt be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not bo made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AMD MALICIOUSLY WOUIBIIG. On the morning of the 6th instant, some evil- disposed persons attempted to forcibly enter the parsonage at Downham, near Clitheroe, and there and then seriously injured a police constable, by firing at him with a pistol when in the execution of his duty. £ 20 reward will be paid to any person who will give such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offenders. Information to be given to Superintendent Alexander, Police Office, Burnley; to Inspector Sutton, Police Office, Clitheroe ; or at any other Police Station in Lancashire.— Bow- street, July 17. Brighton, on the morning of the 17th instant : a Purse, con- taining a diamond Ring, eleven stones, one of them at the end rot a brilliant, and a small chip on another, set in Silver; an old Ring of 12 fine pearls, square setting; two small Guards, one of them plain, and the other has been broken and mended; a Ring, with square opal stone ; a square tartan stamp Case, lined with crimson silk, and several memo- randa, & c. Information to be given to Chief Constable White, Brighton.— Bow- street, July 19. Stolen from the person on the 15th instant, at Seamer Fair : a silver patent lever Watch, plain white dial, steel pointers, seconds hand broken off, No. 8881, maker Matthew Bradshaw, Liverpool. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Jonas, North Riding Constabulary, or to Inspector Ryder, Falsgrave, Scarborough, Yorkshire.— Bow- st., July 19. On the night of the 14th instant, Robert Pybus, groom to H. Lawson, Esq., of Gatherley Castle, was stopped on the highway near to Catterick Railway Station, in the North Riding of Yorkshire, and robbed of a silver albert watch Guard, plain link pattern, and had a small foreign Coin attached. By two men who had the appearance of tramps, one was much taller than the other, the tall man having hair about the face, and both dressed in dark clothes. Information to be given to Superintendent Gregory, Richmond ; or to Inspector Speuce, Scorton, North Riding of Yorkshire. - Bow- street, July 17. Absconded from Llanelly, charged with stealing from the person at Gilwern, Breconshire, on the nighty of the 13th instant, five £ 10 aud three £ 5 Bank of England Notes and upwards of £ 40 iu Gold : a female, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, swarthy complexion, dark brown hair, grey eyes, lost front teeth, has a cut and two or three small blue marks on the face ; dressed in a grey tweed waterproof cloak, old brown stuff dress, black straw hat, and new elastic- side boots ; is of dirty appearance, can speak both English and Welsh, and has relatives living at Dowlais and Rhymney, Glamorganshire. Information to be given to Superintendent Evans, Breconshire Constabulary, Crickhowell.— Bovj- street, July 17. On the 17th instant, the dwelling- house of Edward Thomas, Shavington Park Lodge, Dodcott- cum- Wilksley, near Nantwich, Cheshire, was broken into, and the following property stolen therein: a black cloth Coat, with velvet collar ; a black Vest; a pair of dark Trousers ; a pepper- and- salt- coloured sac Coat, bound with black braid, and drab- coloured buttons; and an old black silk Skirt, plaited at bottom. By a man, 26 or 27 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, light complexion, light hair cut short, rather long features, small light moustache, and slightly pockmarked; dressed in a light grey coat, black vest, light grey trousers, light boots, and low hard felt hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Laxton, County Police, Nantwich, Cheshire. — Bow- street, July 21. Between 1 and 6 p. m. on the 8th instant, the house of William Dadswell, of the parish of Mayfield, Sussex, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a pair case silver verge Watch, maker Fowl, Uckfield, had a steel chain attached, with an imitation Sovereign, and an old Seal at the end of the chain. Information to be given at the Chief Con- stable's Office, Lewes, to Superintendent Peerless, Uckfield, to Sergeant Amos, Avery Police Court, Mark Cross, or at any Police Station in East Sussex.— Bow- street, July 21. FORGERY. Absconded from the borough of Derby ou the 21st ult.: THOMAS STONE, chaiged with forging a name to a security, being a receipt for £ 800, by means of which J ames Young Stone obtained £ 400 : he is about 28 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, no beard or whiskers, dark browu hair, sallow complexion, high cheek bones, a deep scar on the right cheek, from the kick of a horse when a boy, quick in manners, rather slender build, has been a fish and poultry dealer. Also absconded from the borough of Derby, on the 21st ult.: JAMES YOUNG STONE, a butcher, charged with stealing the above Security, being a receipt for £ 800 : about 16 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, fair complexion, light brown hair ; the day he absconded he drew £ 400 from the Bank, on account, £ 300 of it being in £ 5 Bank of England Notes. They were last seen together at Kings' Cross Station on the morning of the 22nd ultimo, having arrived by the mail train from Peterborough. £ 20 reward will be paid on their apprehension within a month. Information to be given to Head Constable Hilton, Derby, who holds warrants for their apprehension.— Bow- street, July 26. Absconded from Derby on the 22nd ultimo, charged with forgery : two men, one 28 or 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fair complexion, no whiskers or moustache, wide mouth, prominent scar on cheek, blue eyes, brown hair, apparently delicate and thin ; the other 17 or 18 years of age, fair com- plexion, hair curly, blue eyes, 5 feet 7 inches high, stout build. Information to be given to Superintendent William- son, Detective Department, Great Scotland Yard, London, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, July 24. ROBBERY A WD LASCEIY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person at Dover on the 24th instant : an old- fashioned gold lever Watch, maker, Keppix, engine- turned case, and much worn. Information to be given to Head Constable Coram, Police Station, Dover, Kent.— Bow- street, July 26. Stolen on the 21st instant, at Linton, from the person of Charles Giblin : au old- fashioned pair- case silver Watch, No. 8817, maker John Spencer, London, had a brass Guard aud steel fob Chain, with an old Coin and exhibition Medal attached. Information to be given to Superintendent Long, Police Station, Linton, Cambridge.— Bow- street, July 24. Stolen from the person of a gentleman in Bideford, on the 20th instant, a gold open- face lever Watch, engine- turned, gold dial, with black figures, jewelled in eight. holes, compen- sation balance, engraved on the movement ' D. Evans, Swansea, No. 34419.' £ 5 reward will be paid to any person will give such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Superintendent Vanstone, Bideford, North Devon. —. Bow- street, July 24. Stolen from the pocket of a lady at the railway terminus, BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. In addition to the property stolen from the house of Mr. Joseph Gallimore, aud reported in the Police Gazette of the 17tli instant, is a silver Medal of the United Society of Patriarchs of Great Britain and Ireland, with four hands joined, aud motto, ' Justice and Truth.' Information to be be given to Inspector McCrea, Tettenhall; to Police Officer Hope, Police Station, Bushbury ; or to any Police Officer in the county of Stafford.— Bow- street, July 26. Between 12 o'clock midnight oil the 22nd and 7 o'clock on the morning of the 23rd instant, some person or- persons burglariously entered the dwelliiig- house of Mr. Richard Sharples, No. 18, Richmond- terrace, Blackburn, and stole therein : a £ 10 Bank of England Note, dated January, 1870 ; £ 20 10s. in Gold, 10s. in Silver, and 6d. in Copper Money ; a Pocket- book, with four or five pouches, maroon leather, fastens with an attached elastic band, and is torn at one corner, containing bills and other papers with owner's name, also the name of Daniel Rooney ; a Pocket- knife, white bone handle, white metal mounting, and three blades, large blade resembling a dagger; a short silver Toothpick, with ivory point; a gutta percha hair Comb, with ' Gutta Percha' marked upon it; a black or puce leather Purse, with steel clasp, much worn ; and a latch door Key. Whoever will give such infornfation as may lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offenders and recovery of the property, shall receive £ 2 reward, on application to Chief Constable Potts, Town Hall, Blackburn, Lancashire.— Bow- street, July 26. Between 11 p. m. 21st and 6 a. m. on the 22nd instant, the dwelling- house of Thomas Andrus, Esq., of Scudbury, in the parish of Southfleet, was broken into, aud the following property stolen therein : a silver Sugar Basin, with four legs, four men's , heads, two handles ; a pair silver Sugar Tongs ; two silver Cruet Stands, one small, one large ; three Tops of Pepper Boxes ; two Mustard Pots, silver tops; a silver Thimble ; two silver Tea Spoons, one marked 1 A.', the other plain ; a large black Railway Rug, with yellow lining : a silk Umbrella, with brown handle; and several small silver Foreign Coins. The offenders are supposed to have a horse and cart, as prints of a cart wheel were on the lawn. Infor- mation to be given to Sergeant Fisher, Kent Constabulary, Dartford.— Bow- street, July 24. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen from Cockspitt Farm, in the parish of Bridgwater, during the night of the 21st instant, a bay hackney Mare, 5 years old, about 15 hands high, dark legs, mane, and tail, the hind legs are a little puffed. Information to be given to Superintendent Jeffs, North Petherton, Somersetshire.— Bow- street, July 24. Stolen on the night of the 17th instant, from a meadow at Shotten Mill, in the parish of Linchmere, Sussex, the property of Edward Dunce : a light- coloured mare Donkey, with a smal' wart inside one of her thighs, legs recently clipped, and in good condition. Supposed by a man who was seen with a donkey about 2 a. m. the next morning : he is between 50 and 60 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high ; dressed in a brown frock, aud billycock hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Bray, West Sussex Constabulary, Midhurst, Sussex.— Bow- street, July 24. Stolen from Walsall, during the night of the 13th inst., a brown cart Horse, aged, 15j hands high, mark from a kick on right hip, and a white spot on back of left ear. Informa- tion to be given to the Chief Constable, Walsall, Stafford- shire.— Bow- street, July 21. Stolen from a meadow in the parish of Carlton Colville on the night of the 15th or early ou the morning of the 16th mstant: a small bay mare Pony, about 9 years old, small ears, white star on forehead, and in good condition. Infor- mation to be given to the Lowestoft Police, or to Police Constable ( No. 114) Phillipps, Carlton Colville, Lowestoft, East Suffolk.— Bow- street, Jiily 21. Stolen from a field near Edgmond, on the night of the 15tli instant : a Shropshire down wether Sheep, marked on right hip with heart in centre of a ring, the property of Mr. Lindop, farmer. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Richardson, Wellington; or to Sergeant Christie, Newport, Salop.— Bow- street, July 19. Stolen from Mold on the 15th instant : a small- sized light brown Donkey, aged, two round holes in the middle of each ear, and in good condition, the property of John Roberts. Information to be given to Superintendent Thomas Police Station, Mold, Flintshire.— Bow- street, Jxdy 19. During the night of the 20th or morning of the 21st instaut the dwelling- house of P. Irvine, Esq., J. P., East Burnham, Bucks, was entered, aud the following articles stolen therein : an Indian ivory Work Box, about 14 inches long, and about 10 inches wide, has the appearance of a tea caddy; ail Indian ivory Knitting Box, inlaid with silver, about 12 inches long and 4 or 5 inches wide ; an Indian saudlewood Knitting Box, about 12 inches long and 4 or 5 inches wide, with elephant on top; a silver Snuff Box, with initials ' P. J.' and crest, a hand holding two olive branches ; a silver Card Case, broken ; an Indian silver watch Guard with very fine liuks ; a small silver Key ; a Stereoscope and Box ; a small glass Letter Weight; a quantity of Mother- of- pearl Indian Counters ; and a small carved ivory Card Case. Information to be given to Superintendent Dunham, Slough, Buckinghamshire,— Bow- street, July 24. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Absconded on the 21st instant, charged with stealing £ 114, the monies of his employers : a man, 36 years of ao- e° 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion, light hair, cow lip ° iil centre of forehead, grey eyes, auburn whiskers, bow le"- s ; dressed in black walking coat, grey mixture trousers, white' shirt, and high black hat.— Metropolitan Police, Y Division July 26. ' Description of JOHN HARRISON, clerk, charged with embezzlement at Doncaster : he is about 38 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, sandy hair and whiskers, which he wears all round his face ; has a small wen ou his right cheek, slender built, and is a native of Hanley, Staffordshire. Information to be given to Superintendent Astwood, West Riding Con- stabulary, Doncaster, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- street, July 26. Description of HOWARD BARON, who has absconded from Brighton, charged with stealing £ 10, the property of Mr. John Nunn, by whom he had been employed as potman : about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, light com- plexion, no whiskers; dressed in a blue pea jacket, felt hat, and is slovenly about the neck. Information to be given to Chief Constable White, Police Station, Brighton^ who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, Julj/ 26. Description of THOMAS DEAN, a traveller, who has absconded from Leeds, charged with embezzlement : about 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark brown hair, moustache, and whiskers, rather ruddy complexion, has a slight weakness in his knees, a prominent nose, large fore- head ; dressed in a grey suit and black silk hat. Informa- tion to be given to Chief Constable Wetherell, Town Hall, Leeds, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, July 26. Absconded from Immingham on the 21st instant, charged with stealing in a dwelling- house, eight Sovereigns and two Half- sovereigns, the property of Charles Brant, his master : JOHN HENRY STARKIE, 18 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, ruddy complexion, dark sandy hair, blue eyes, freckled face, no whiskers; dressed in brawn cord, or, fustian trousers, dark plush vest, may be wearing an old dark cloth coat, a soft black billycock hat, and strong lace- up boots. Information to be given to Superintendent Thorsby, Police Station, Barton- upon- Humber, Lincolnshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, July 26. Description of JOHN WHITE, charged with stealing from the dwelling- house of S. Stead, of Drighlington, on the 10th instant: one Piece; . one ditto dress Piece; five cotton Handkerchiefs ; £ 5 in Gold and Silver, and several other articles : is 25 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark complexion, eyes, and hair, and a blacksmith; his last resi- dence was at Drighlington, as a railway porter, moderately educated, stoutly built, and walks erect; dressed in grey, cloth suit and black billycock bat. He was accompanied by EMMA STEAD, wife of Samuel Stead, who is 23 years of age, 5 feet high, slender make, light hair, and sallow com- plexion ; dressed in black cloth jacket, trimmed with braid, black hat, with black feather, and brown, lavender, and green stuff dress. Information to be given to Superintendent Ball, West Riding Constabulary, Bradford.— Bow- street, July 24. Description of ELIZABETH CAMPBELL, who is ( jharged on a warrant with stealing a quantity of Wearing Apparel, & c. ( which is recovered), from a dwellmg- house at Durham, on the 6th May last: she is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, front teeth decayed, second finger of right hand thick at the end ; dressed when last seen in black and white stuff dress, and black scarf $ hawl rounded off at the corners ; had with her a child about 3 years of age. £ 1 reward will be paid for her apprehension. Information to be given to Chief Constable Wilson, Town Hall, Durham.— Bow- street, July 24. Absconded from Warrington, Lancashire, on the 21st ipstant, having stolen a black cloth frock Coat, a pair of brown striped Trousers, and a white calico Shirt, linen front, all nearly new : GEORGE BATEMAN, a light porter or labourer, about 26 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, sallow complexion, grey or hazel eyes, and clean shaved ; dressed swellish. Accompanied by a woman, probably his wife, 23 years of age, full face, good looking, smartly dressed, and fine spoken. They will obtain private lodgings or apartments, and abscond when rent is due. The man has some writing on the left arm between elbow and wrist. Information to be given to Chief Constable Hunt, Warrington, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Boxo- street, July 24. Absconded from the borough of Hanley on the 7th inst,, CHARLES DOWLEN, a letter carrier, charged with stealing two registered Letters, containing Bank of England Notes, to the value of £ 80, the property of Her Majesty's Postmaster General: he is about 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, thin build, oval features, fresh complexion, high cheek bones, dark brown hair, small light whiskers, light grey eyes ; dressed when last seen in a dark mixture suit, pepper- and- salt, round billycock hat; he is a native of Sussex; is supposed to be in the neighbourhood of Brighton, near which place he formerly lived as servant in a gentleman's family. Informa- tion to be given to Chief Constable Alexander, Borough Police Office, Hanley, Staffordshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, July 24. Description of WILLIAM FRANCIS THORP, charged with embezzlement : he is from 35 to 40 years of age, but looks younger, about 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, red hair and moustache, whiskers shaved off, dressed respectably, and is a dentist. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Leeds, who holds a warrant for bis apprehension. — Bow- street, July 24. Absconded on the 20th instant from the Railway Tavern Commercial- road, Ratcliffe, charged with stealing £ 12 in Gold, the monies of his master: a youth, 18 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fair complexion, dark brown hair, brown eyes, scars on forehead and on nose ; dressed in a dark brown walking coat, black cloth vest and trousers, side spring boots, and cheesecutter cap. — Metropolitan Police, K Division, July 24. Absconded on the 18th instant from 22, Hoxton Street, Shoreditch, charged with stealing a Cheque for £ 4 16s., the monies of his master : a man, 32 years of age, 5 feet 1 iuch high, fair complexion, brown hail', little whiskers ; dressed in a blue coat, pockets on hips, dark vest, grey trousers, and black hat.— Metropolitan Police, N Division, July 24. Stolen from a dwelling- house at Kersley, between 11 p. m. on the 19th, and 6 a. m. on the 20th instant : a patent silver lever Watch, engine- turned cases, cream- coloured dial, which is cracked across, ornamental gold fingers, had attached a gold albert Guard, with blood stone which is a little broken ; a pair of elastic- side Boots, double soled, capped at toes, and bottoms recently repaired ; and 7s. in Money. By a boy who had lodged at the house 3 or 4 days, and stated he came from Stockport: 15 or 16 years of age, 5 feet high, stout built, black hair and eyes, hair cut short ; dressed in an old black cloth jacket and vest, old yellow cord trousers, ragged at bottoms, cloth cap, and black and white scarf ; supposed to be wearing the stolen boots, as he left a pair of clogs behind. Information to be given at the Town Hall, Little Bolton, Lancashire.— Bow- street, July 24. Absconded on the 15tli instant, charged with em- bezzling £ 11 5s., the monies of his employers, Messrs. Farnell ancl Watson, Brewers, of Isleworth: THOMAS PAINE GEOWELL, a olerk, 40 years of age, 5 feet high, fresh complexion, brown hair, sandy whiskers, and moustache turning grey, full eyes, prominent nose, short neck, broad shoulders, thick set, and slightly bowlegged; dressed in a light suit and light billycock hat, a native of Bristol.— Metro- politan Police, T Division, July 24. Stolen on the 18th instant, from a dwelling- house in Oldham : one dark blue cloth double- breasted walking Coat, two pockets in the skirts behind, and one inside left breast, lined in the back with black Italian cloth, and trimmed with fancy covered buttons ; oue Vest, same material, plain shape, with three pockets ; and one pair of grey and blue striped Trousers, fly frouts, and cross pockets. By a man of the fol- lowing description : about 28 years of age, 5 feet 6J inches high, dark hair, small whiskers and moustache, fresh com- plexion, lost several teeth in front of upper jaw, squints with left eye, and walks erect ; dressed in brown cloth overcoat with velvet collar, black cloth vest and trousers, black silk hat, and elastic- side boots, with buttons in the front. Stated that lie was a clerk and came from London. One pound reward will be paid for his apprehension and recovery of the property. COTTERILL, charged with stealing about £ 12, the money of his employer: he Is about 28 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, fresh complexion, dark Whiskers, beard, and moustache; dressedan dark mixed coat aud trousers, white straw hat., with black ribbon. or black billv hat; lie is known vict, iou on the lst March, 1865 ; supposed gone to Birming- ham. Information to be given to Superintendent Head, Police Office, Oxford .— Bow- street, July 26. who the name of JAMES STEWART, who is in custody at Bishop Auckland, on a ™ steilllng Brushes and other articles from the shop of Mr. G. Strachan on the 25th instant : he is at out 28 years of at Mr. E. Blaken's ironmonger, Warwick- street, Worthing, at Mr. Brindley's, 167, High Burton- on- Trent, has a relative a paper hanger, at Chichester, and has friends at Sheffield. In formation to be given to Chief Constable Parry, Borough Police Station, ivfotj^ ngluun, whp holds a. warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, July 21. An officer's servant, 11th Hussars, absconded on tlie loth instant, stealing new Portmanteau, with ' G., C. C.' on top, cross at each end, containing a suit of Regimentals; several suits ' of plain ' Clothes ; and a pair of grey Trousers," With E. T. Manning and Co.', - on the buttons ; the property of Mr. Cheape, llth Hussars : lie is about 22 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, no whiskers or moustache, and is a native of Windsor ; dressed in black cpat, dark trousers, billy- cock hat, or he may lie wearing a pair of light trousers and waistcoat ; had a great coat with him. Information to be given to Superintendent Davies, City of Canterbury.— Bow- street, July 21. On the 21st instant the decomposed body of a fully developed newly- born male Child was found in a field in the township of Holgate, just outside of the boundary of the city of York. The man and his three accomplices suspected of stealing, on the 19th instant, a small glass Case containing Rings, at Louth, the property of Mr. Thomas Softly, have been appre- hended and remanded until the 26th instant, but none of the property recovered. In their possession were found fifteen Rings, supposed to have been stolen, viz. : a large silver signet Ring, ' J. B.' on centre ; a gold signet Ring, with red stone ; a gold guard Ring, with three garnet stones ; a gold coral Ring, seven stones ; a gold hair Ring, with ' J. B., died May 14, 1866 ;' a lady's gold fancy Ring, with cluster of pearls and green stone in centre; a gold Ring, with four imitation diamonds ( paste) and a piece of red sealing wax in centre ; a gold guard Ring, 15 carats ; a ditto Ring, 12 carats; and six gold wedding Rings, 22 carats, which have evidently been rubbed down with sand paper.
