C. *#* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all tetters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. On the morning of the 6th instant, some evil- disposed persons attempted to forcibly enter the parsonage at Downham, near Olitheroe, and there aud then seriously injured a police constable, by firing at him with a pistol when in the execution of his duty. £ 20 reward will be paid to any person who will give such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offenders. Information to be given to Superintendent Alexander, Police Office, Burnley; to Inspector Sutton, Police Office, Clitheroe ; or at any other Police Station in Lancashire.— Bow- street, July 17. FORGERY. Absconded from the borough of Derby on the 21st ult.: THOMAS STONE, charged with forging a name to a security, being a receipt for £ 800, by means of which James Young Stone obtained £ 400 : he is about 28 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, no beard or whiskers, dark brown hair, sallow complexion, hig^ cheek bones, a deep scar on the right cheek, from the kick of a hoi^ e when a boy, quick in manners, rather slender build, has been a fish and poultry dealer. Also absconded from the borough of Derby, on the 21st ult.: JAMES YOUNG STONE, a butcher, charged with stealing the above Security, being a receipt for £ 800 : about 16 yrs. of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, fair complexion, light brown hair ; the day he absconded[ he drew £ 400 from the Bank, on account, £ 300 of it being in £ 5 Bank of England Notes. They were last seen together at Kings' Cross Station on the morning of the 22nd ultimo, having arrived by the mail train from Peterborough. £ 5 reward will be paid on their apprehension. Information to be given to Head Constable Hilton, Derby, who holds warrants for their apprehension.— Bow- street, July 14. instant, five £ 10 and three £ 5 Bank of England Notes and upwards of £ 40 in Gold : a female, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, swarthy complexion, dark brown hair, grey eyes, lost front teeth, has a cut and two or three small blue marks on the face ; dressed in a grey tweed waterproof cloak, old brown stuff dress, black straw hat, and new elastic- side boots ; is of dirty appearance, can speak both English and Welsh, and has relatives living at Dowlais and Rhymney, Glamorganshire. Information to be given to Superintendent Evans, Breconshire Constabulary, Crickhowell.— Bow- street, July 17. BURGLARY AND HOUSE 30th of August, 1851 ;' a gold Ring, with oval bloodstone, with crest engraved— a lion, inside has been a place for hair, but an oval gold plate has been let in over it. Information to be given to Head Constable Barber, Landport Station, Portsmouth.— Bow- street, July 14. Stolen during the night of the 7th instant, from a shop in Bolton, entrance having been effected by breaking through the sky- light, the following property : three pairs of men's elastic- side Boots, with four black buttons down the sides, and stitched soles ; seven pairs of men's elastic- side Boots, crimped fronts; 7s. in Copper; also eight other pairs of gentleman's elastic- side Boots, amongst which are three odd ones. Information to be given to Chief Constable Beech, Borough Police Office, Bolton, Lancashire.— Bow- st., July 14. On the 17th instant, the dwelling- house of Edward Thomas, Shavington Park Lodge, Dodcott- cum- Wilksley, near Nantwich, Cheshire, was broken into, and the following property stolen therein : a black cloth Coat, with velvet collar ; a black Vest; a pair of dark Trousers ; a pepper- and- salt- coloured sac Coat, bound with black braid, and drab- coloured buttons; and an old black silk Skirt, plaited at bottom. By a man, 26 or 27 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, light complexion, light hair cut short, rather long features, small light moustache, and slightly pockmarked; dressed in a light grey coat, black vest, light grey trousers, light boots, and low hard felt hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Laxton, County Police, Nantwich, Cheshire. — Bow- street, July 21. Between 1 and 6 p. m on the 8th instant, the house of William Dadswell, of the parish of Mayfield, Sussex, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a pair case silver verge Watch, maker Fowl, Uckfield, had a steel chain attached, with an imitation Sovereign, and an old Seal at the end of the chain. Information to be given at the Chief Con- stable's Office, Lewes, to Superintendent Peerless, Uckfield, to Sergeant Amos, Avery Police Court, Mark Cross, or at any Police Station in East Sussex.— Bow- street, July 21. About 12 noon on the 12th instant the house of Mrs. Jane Jones, of Pontvaen, near Chirk, was broken into, and the following property stolen therein: a grey suit of men's Clothes ; a pair of brown Trousers and Vest ; a black cloth Coat and Vest ; a piece of Calico cut for a boy's shirt; a red Handkerchief, white spots ; a pair of ribbed cloth Trousers ; a plain light coloured silk Handkerchief, marked ' J. Morris;' a spotted ditto, marked ' J. M.' with hair; a gold plated Locket and Chain; a pair of Ear- drops ; a black Watch Guard. By a man about 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, small whiskers inclined to be sandy ; dressed in a white slop, light- coloured cord or moleskin trousers, turned up at the bottom, cloth cap with peak and leather strap, good lace- up boots. After leaving the house he was seen to take his white slop off, put on one of the stolen coats, and put the other things in the slop and slung them over his shoulder; he was seen at about 1 p. m. on the same day on the turnpike road about two miles from Chirk, and going iu the direction of Wrexham. Information to be given to Superintendent Gough, Police Station, Oswestry, Salop.— Bow- street, July 17 During the nights of the 7th and ,8th instant, a shoe- dealer's shop in Bolton, was twice broken and entered, and about twenty pairs of gentlemen's Boots stolen therein, all marked ' W.' on the soles aud heels, also the private marks ' Rn/ c.', ' Re/ c.', and 1 Rm/ c.', in ink and pencil, amongst them are nine pairs of elastic- sides, mock buttous, a pair of short Wellington, the remaining pairs are elastic- sides, some of which are crimped fronts, and two of them are odd ones; a silk Pocket- handkerchief, with red border, drab middle, with small diamond pattern in the centre, and a drab spot in the middle of the diamond ; and, a red merino Bag. Information to be given to Chief Constable Beech, Borough Police Office, Bolton.— Bow- street, July 17. Some time during the 12th instant the dwelling- house of Mr. Joseph Gallimore was entered and a box broken open, and £ 11 in Gold, a £ 5. Bank of England Note, a silver Geneva' Watch, No. 44551, steel Chain attached, and a gold plated albert Chain, stolen. Three men were seen in the vicinity of the house at about 2 p. m. ; they enquired the way for the Staffordshire Potteries ; one was dressed in a moleskin suit, new white patches on trousers, and a very long nose; the other had a dark suit with black cap. Information to be given to Inspector McCrea, Police Station, Tettenhall, or to Police Officer Hope, Police Station, Bushbury, near Wolverhampton.— Bow- street, July 17. Between the 6th and 8th instant the dwelling- house of James Farmer, in the parish of Fletching, Sussex, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a large pair- case silver verge Watch, silver Guard, steel Chain and Key attached, maker John Parker, Lindfield. A youth of the following descrip- tion is strongly suspected : about 19 years of age, round full face, stout build, a farm labourer, generally wears a short dark jacket, cord trousers, half boots, and a cap. Information to be given to Superintendent Peerless, Police Station, Uck- field, or at any Police Station in East Sussex.— Bow- street, July 14. Description of Property stolen by means of burglary at Portsmouth, on the 9th instant : a pair of gold Sleeve Links, with hair round them and in the centre, and with the follow- ing initials and dates—' L. G. L.' or ' L. G. F. L., 12th of ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the pocket of a lady at the railway terminus, Brighton, on the morning of the 17th instant: a Purse, con- taining a diamond Ring, eleven stones, one of them at the end not a brilliant, and a small chip on another, set in Silver; an old Ring of 12 fine pearls, square setting; two small Guards, one of them plain, and the other has been broken and mended; a Ring, with square opal stone; a square tartan stamp Case, lined with crimson silk, and several memo- randa, & c. Information to be given to Chief Constable White, Brighton.— Bow- street, July 19. Stolen from the person on the 15th instant, at Seamer Fair : a silver patent lever Watch, plain white dial, steel pointers, seconds hand broken off, No. 8881, maker Matthew Bradshaw, Liverpool. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Jonas, North Riding Constabulary, or to Inspector Ryder, Falsgrave, Scarborough, Yorkshire.— Bow- st., July 19. On the night of the 14th instant, Robert Pybus, groom to H. Lawson, Esq., of Gatherley Castle, was stopped on the highway near to Catterick Railway Station, in the North Riding of Yorkshire, and robbed of a silver albert watch Guard, plain link pattern, and had a small foreign Coin attached. By two men who had the appearance of tramps, one was much taller than the other, the tall man having hair about the face, and both dressed in dark clothes. Information to be given to Superintendent Gregory, Richmond ; or to Inspector Spence, Scorton, North Riding of Yorkshire. - Bow- street, July 17. Absconded from Llanelly, charged with stealing from the person at Gilwern, Breconshire, on the night] of the 13th January, 1865,' ' L. E. L., 4th of March, 1862,' and ' E. S. L., HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen from Walsall, during the night of the 13th inst., a brown cart Horse, aged, 15J hands high, mark from a kick on right hip, and a white spot on back of left ear. Informa- tion to be given to the Chief Constable, Walsall, Stafford- shire.— Bow- street, July 21. Stolen from a meadow in the parish of Carlton Colville on the night of the 15th or early on the morning of the 16th instant: a small bay mare Pony, about 9 years old, small ears, white star on forehead, and in good condition. Infor- mation to be given to the Lowestoft Police, or to Police Constable ( No. 114) Phillipps, Carlton Colville, Lowestoft, East Suffolk.— Bow- street, July 21. Stolen from a field near Edgmond, on the night of the 15th instant: a Shropshire down wether Sheep, marked on right hip with heart in centre of a ring, the property of Mr. Lindop, farmer. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Richardson, Wellington; or to Sergeant Christie, Newport, Salop.— Bow- street, July 19. > Stolen from Mold on the 15th instant : a small- sized light brown Donkey, aged, two round holes in the middle of each ear, and in good condition, the property of John Roberts. Information to be given to Superintendent Thomas, Police Station, Mold, Flintshire.— Bow- street, July 19. Stolen from a field at Dorking, on the night of the 2nd ultimo, the property of Mr. Bell, of the Star and Garter Hotel: a dark brown Mare, very old, about 15 hands high, very tender on the fore feet, and the near knee has been broken. Information to be given to Superintendent Page, Surrey Constabulary, Dorking.— Bow- street, July 17. Stolen from Windsor : a stout grey cob Mare, black spots on hind quarters, about 8 years old, 14|- hands high, tail cut nearly close to dock, has a ring on near shoulder from collar and trace, hair rubbed off near side ; a set of plated Harness, nearly new, initials ' L. T. H.' reversed on blinkers of bridle pad ; also a dark green dog Cart, makers ' Norwood Brothers, Coach Builders, Windsor,' on cap of wheels. By a man of the following description, about 28 years of age, about 5 feet 8i inches high, florid complexion, light brown whiskers, and gentlemanly exterior and address ; dressed in dark clothes, and wore a massive chain. £ 7 or a proportionate reward will be paid on conviction of the offender. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Hayes, Police Station, Windsor, Berks.— Bow- street, July 17. Stolen from Wandsworth Common, on the 28th ultimo : a brown Cob, 14 hands high, 7 years old, white star on fore- black legs, rough mane, tail cut square.— Metropolitan Police, V Division, July 17. Stolen between the 7th and 8th instant, from Strensall Common, an aged bay Pony, 14 hands high, black legs, rather slack in the back, a few white hairs on near shoulder near the mane, and a little white behind the ears. Information to be given to Superintendent Hunter, North Riding Constabulary, Heworth.— Bow- street, July 14. Stolen from a field at Staple Hill, in the parish of Man- gotsfield, on the night of the 7th instant: a light brown Mare aged, about 14 hands high, switch tail, a star in the forehead', and one white foot behind, with a scar under the off flank in good condition, and carries her head dowD when travelling ; the property of Mr. Henry Watts, butcher. Information to be given to Superintendent Rawle, Fishponds, near Bristol. — Bow street, July 14. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Stolen on the 18th instant, from a dwelling- house in Oldham : one dark blue cloth double- breasted walking Coat two pockets in the skirts behind, and one inside left breast' lined in the back with black Italian cloth, and trimmed with fancy covered buttons ; one Vest, same material, plain shape, with three pockets ; and one pair of grey and blue striped Trousers, fly fronts, and cross pockets. By a man of the fol- lowing description : about 28 years of age, 5 feet 64 inches high, dark hair, small whiskers and moustache, fresh com- plexion, lost several teeth in front of upper jaw, squints with left eye, and walks erect; dressed in brown cloth overcoat with velvet collar, black cloth vest and trousers, black silk hat, and elastic- side boots, with buttons in the front. Stated that he was a clerk and came from London. One pound reward will be paid for his apprehension and recovery of the property. Information to be given to the Chief Constable Town Hall, Oldham.— Bow- street, July 21. Absconded from Nottingham on the 12th iustant, H. E. COTTERILL, charged with stealing about J12, the money of his employer : he is about 28 years of age. 5 feet 10 inches high, fresh complexion, dark whiskers, beard, and! moustache ; dressed in dark mixed coat and trousers, white; rather a foreign accent ; said he bad worked a good deal in American clock manufactories, and that his wife had died at Manchester a short time ago. The watch has recently been recovered at Spennymoor, from a man to whom Jackson sold it. An officer's servant, 11th Hussars, absconded on the 15th instant, stealing a new Portmanteau, with ' G. C. C.' on top, cross at each end, containing a suit of Regimentals ; several suits of plain Clothes ; and a pair of grey Trousers, with ' E. T. Manning and Co.', on the buttons ; the property of Mr. Cheape, 11th Hussars : he is about .22 years of agp, abau, t 5 feet 7 inches high, no whiskers or moustache, aud is a native of Windsor ; dressed in black coat, driSfc trousers, billy- cock hat, or he may be wearing a pair of light trousers and waistcoat ; had a great coat with him. Absconded on the 15th instant, from No. 5, Robinson- row, Kingsland, stealing ,£ 30, the monies of his master : a man, 42 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, dark complexion, hair, and eyes, scar on upper lip ; dressed in dark clothes.— Metropolitan Police, N Division, July 19. Description of JOSEPH SHORE, charged at Saudbach, with stealing £ 4 14s. 3d., on the 26th ultimo, the property of George Glover, liis master : 19 years of age, 5 feet 0 inches high, fair complexion, light brown hair, and grey eyes ; dressed in dark cloth jacket, moleskin trousers, and black bowler hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Roubottom, Constabulary Station, Middlewich, Cheshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Sow- street, July 19. Stolen from the state room of the barque ' Meridian,' lying in Tyne Dock, South Shields, on the 14th instant : £ 48 ill Gold, and Jl in Silver, the monies of Captain Edgar Kidd. By PETER WILLIAM WARD, steward, about 22 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, stout make, dark com- plexion, large dark eyes, tuft of hair on end of chin, a native of Kennington Oval, London, S. ; has a sweetheart named Miss Holmes, at No. 4, Hope- street, Dorset- street, Clapham- road, Clapham, London, S., and a cousin named Miss Wood, at No. 2, White Lion- street, Bishopsgate- street, London. He was for some time in Cleikenwell Prison or Reformatory, about 1866, and was tried at Newport about 12 months ago, and sentenced to a term of imprisonment. Information to be given to Head Constable Richardson, South Shields, Durham, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, July 19. Absconded from Winchester, charged with embezzling several sums of money, received on account of his master: WILLIAM TURNER, a journeyman baker, about 27 years of age, about 5 feet high, thick set, dark complexion, hair, whiskers, and moustache, of slovenly appearance, and supposed dressed in working baker's dress, and low hat ; lias relations living at Westmeon, Hants. Information to be given to Head Constable Hubbersty, Winchester, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, July 19. Abscondfd from Wisbech, on the 17th instant, charged with stealing a Cash- box, £ 10, and some valuable Memoranda : a boy, 13 years of age, of genteel appearance ; dressed in grey cloth jacket, vest, and trousers, and black cloth cap with cheesecutter peak; had in his possession a new pistol and two brown paper parcels, one of which is supposed to contain the cash- box. Information to be given to Head Constable Sharpe, Borough Police, Wisbech, Cambs.— Bow- st., July 19. Absconded, charged with embezzlement : WILLIAM HARRY, 45 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark com- plexion, hair, whiskers, and moustache, and one eye nearly closed, covered with a shade ; dressed in brown coat, light trousers and vest, and round felt hat.- Metropolitan Police, Y Division, July 17. Absconded, charged with stealing £ 3:: : a sergeant of the 2nd Battalion Coldstream Guards, 27 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark complexion, hair, and moustache, no whiskers, slight build, very red face, scar on cheek ; fond of sparring ; dressed in regimentals ; supposed accompanied by a prostitute, 23 years of age, tall, dark complexion and hair; dressed in cotton dress, black velveteen jacket, and black bonnet, crape in front.— Metropolitan Police, July 17. Stolen from a blacksmith's shop in the parish of Llandeg- ley, on the 8th instant : a hand Vice, which is recovered, and two brass Taps. By a tramp of the following description, about 50 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, rather stoutly built, dark brown hair and whiskers, which are turning grey, very sallow complexion, and very dirty appearance ; dressed in a coat, made out of a soldier's old overcoat, of a greenish colour, had been repaired, and the patches sewn on with twine, the front was tied with string, and old blue trousers patched with drab. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Wheeldon, Penybont Police Station, Radnorshire.— Bow- street, July 17. Description of ORLANDO WALL, who on the 4th instant absconded from the employment of Messrs. Hay and Son, watchmakers, Shrewsbury, and for whose arrest warrant is issued charging him with embezzling certain monies, the property of his employers : 18 years of o , 5 feet 9 inches high, long features, dark eyes, brown hair, limps slightly when walking, slight scar on centre of forehead; dressed in black coat with pockets on hips, light striped trousers ( had another pair with him), black double- breasted alpaca vest, red flowered necktie, low- crowned felt hat or wide awake. Information to be given to Superintendent Caswell, County Police Office, Shrewsbury.— Bow- st., July 17. Absconded at 5 p. m. on the 7th instant, from No. 112, High- st., Marylebone, charged with embezzling £ 9 14s. lid., the monies of his employer : a man, 20 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair ; dressed in dark blue shooting jacket, brown trousers, and black billycock hat.— Metropolitan Police, D Division, July 17. Description of a man who gave the name of THOMAS JACKSON, a travelling clock and watch cleaner, who is charged on a warrant with the laiceny of a Watch, he was entrusted to repair, bv John Barron, at Bishop Auckland, on the 22nd October last: he is about 45 years of age, 5 feet 5 or- 6 inches high, dark complexion, dark brown hair and moustache, dark bushy whiskers, and stout made; dressed when he absconded, in brown coat, trousers, and vest, shabby boots, billycock hat, and had on a white apron ; talked with Stolen in Litchurch,. on the 13th iiistajit, the property of Henry Hill: a dark tweed Jacket., nearly new, with outside pockets; a dask clotk Jacket, outside pockets, one), large pocket un tW right inside, and. haa a patch on the right out- Sdrsfart ; a dark tweed Vest, nearly new ; a pair of men's elastic- side Boots, with imitation buttons ; two unbleached calico Shirts ; and a primt Shirt; with a dark spot. BARBER, tramping cabinet maker, native of , Ashton- under Lyne, Lancashire, 50 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, slender made, grey hair, and little ( if any) whiskers. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Richardson, Wellington, or to Sergeant Christie, Newport, Salop, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, July 14. Stolen from a bedroom at the ' White Horse' inn, Great Driffield, on the 21st ultimo, £ 14 in Gold and Silver : by a mail tuid woman, for whose apprehension a warrant lias been issued, they are of the following description. ' GEORGE PINDER, a baker, of Birmingham, 21 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, dark complexion, dark eyes, brown hair, and slender figure ; dressed in dark coat and vest, cord trousers, and clogs.
