POLICE GAZETTE. CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received in eases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieues, and Offenders escaped from Custody, vnth the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but rwt in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 5071 MONDAY, JULY 17, 1871. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MB. W. D. BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should bo made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all tetters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be j addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, • Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his | authority. INFORMATIONS MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. On the morning of the 6th instant, some evil- disposed persons attempted to forcibly enter the parsonage at Downham, near Clitheroe, and there and then seriously injured a police constable, by firing at him with a pistol when in the execution of his duty. £ 20 reward will be paid to any person who will give such information as will lead to the apprehension and attached. attached. By two men who had the appearance of tramps, one was much taller than the other, the tall man having hair about the face, and both dressed in dark clothes. Absconded from Llanelly, charged with stealing from the person at Gilwern, Breconshire, on the night of the 13th instant, five £ 10 aud three £ 5 Bank of England Notes and upwards of £ 40 In Gold : a female, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, swarthy complexion, dark brown hair, grey eyes, lost front teeth, has a cut and two or three small blue marks on the face ; dressed in a grey tweed waterproof cloak, old brown stuff dress, black straw hat, and new elastic- side boots ; is of dirty appearance, can speak both English and Welsh, and has relatives living at Dowlais and Rhymney, Glamorganshire. Information to be given to Superintendent Evans, Breconshire Constabulary, Crickhowell.— Bow- street, July 17. Stolen from the person of a lady in Lancaster on the 10th instant : a red morocco Purse, steel clasp, containing a £ 5 Bank of England Note, No. 35591, S | 29 Leeds, H. Dick- son, 25th July, 1870; five Sovereigns and a half in Gold, some Silver ; and a few Postage Stamps. £ 1 reward will be paid on the apprehension of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the property. Stolen from the person, on the night of the 8th instant, a silver lever Watch, maker Samuel Greenough, Bolton, ! No. 25100, with engine- turned cases, cream- coloured dial, with a double- linked silver albert Guard attached. Information to be given to Chief Constable Beech, Borough Police Office, Bolton, Lancashire.— Bow- street, July 14. Stolen from various persons at Newcastle Races : A patent lever silver Watch, No. 26034, has the name John Farrah' engraved on outer case, had a gold Albert conviction of the offenders. Information to be given to Superintendent Alexander, Police Office, Burnley ; to Inspector Sutton, Police Office, Clitheroe ; or at any other Police Station in Lancashire.— Bow- street, July 17. A double- cased gold hunting Watch, engine- turned cases, maker ' Walker,' London. A gold Geneva Watch, No. 58437, maker Baume, had a gold Albert, curb pattern, with a Locket in shape of a heart attached. O. of Odd Fellows, in recognition of his On the 6th March last Thomas Dodgson, of Darlington, publican, was violently assaulted by a man named DAVID No. 20027, makers Lister Services, 1866.' A patent lever silver Watch, and Son, Newcastle- upon- Tyne. A gold hunting Watch, maker Lister and Son, Newcastle- seven days' imprisonment. On the 30th ultimo Dodgson died from the effects of the injuries inflicted upon him, and a coroner's inquest was held on the body on the lst instant, and a verdict of manslaughter was returned against Levy. He is_ frequently em- ployed as a drover, sometimes gives recitations in public- houses, and is likely to be found at cattle markets or fairs. Absconded from the borough of Derby on the 21st ult.: Information to be given to Chief Constable Nicholls, New- THOMAS STONE, charged with forging a name to aCastle- upon- Tyne, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, July 12. security, being a receipt for £ 800, by means of which J ames ' Young Stone obtained £ 400 : he is about 28 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, no beard or whiskers, dark brown hair, sallow complexion, high cheek bones, a deep scar on the right cheek, from the kick of a horse when a boy, quick in manners, rather slender build, has been a fish and poultry dealer. Some time during the 12th instant the dwelling- house of Mr. Joseph Gallimore was entered and a box broken open, and £ 11 in Gold, a £ 5 Bank of England Note, a silver Geneva Watch, No. 44551, steel Chain attached, and a gold plated albert Chain, stolen. Three men were seen in the vicinity of the house at about 2 p. m. ; they enquired the way for the Staffordshire Potteries ; one was dressed in a moleskin suit, new white patches on trousers, and a very long nose; the other had a dark suit with black cap. Information to be given to Inspector McCrea, Police Station, Tettenhall, or to Police Officer Hope, Police Station, Bushbury, near Wolverhampton.— Bow- street, July 17. Between the 6th and 8th instant the dwelling- house of J ames Farmer, iii the parish of Fletching, Sussex, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a large pair- case silver verge Watch, silver Guard, steel Chain and Key attached, maker John Parker, Lindfield. A youth of the following descrip- tion is strongly suspected : about 19 years of age, round full face, stout build, a farm labourer, generally wears a short dark jacket, cord trr. ' sers, half boots, and a cap. Information to be given to Superintendent Peerless, Police Station, Uck- field, or at any Police Station in East Sussex.— Bow- street, July 14. Description of Property stolen by means of burglary at Portsmouth, on the 9th instant : a pair of gold Sleeve Links, with hair round them and in the centre, and with the follow- ing initials and dates—' L. G. L.' or ' L, G. F. L., 12th of January, 1865,' ' L. E. L., 4th of March, 1862,' and ' E. S. L., 30th of August, 1851 ;' a gold Ring, with oval bloodstone, with crest engraved— a lion, inside has been a place for hair, but an oval gold plate has been let in over it. Information to be given to Head Constable Barber, Landport Station, Portsmouth.— Bow- street, July 14. Stolen during the night of the 7th instant, from a shop in Bolton, entrance having been effected by breaking through the sky- light, the following property : three pairs of men's elastic- side Boots, with four black buttons down the sides, and satched soles ; seven pairs of mjn's elastic- side Boots, crimped fronts; 7s. in Copper; also eight other pairs of gentleman's elastic- side Boots, amongst which are three odd ones. Information to be given to Chief Constable Beech, Borough Police Office, Bolton, Lancashire.— Bow- st., July 14. Description of a man charged at Portsmouth with burglary : he is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, brown hair, grey eyes, dark complexion, rather stout build, and has several boils on his right hand ; dressed in long drab coat, no vest, cord trousers, and cloth cap, with peak of same material; i < believed to have served in the 6th Regiment, and to have be. n invalided for rupture, and is stated to be well known at. /, idershot. Information to be given to Chief Super- intendent Barber, Portsmouth.— Bow- street, July 12. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. About 12 noon on the 12th instant the house of Mrs. Also absconded from the borough of Derby, on the 21st ult.:' J° ne. s> of Pontvaen near Chirk, was broken into, and JUBU _ - • • • the following property stolen therein: a grey suit of mens of brown Trousers and Vest; a black cloth JAMES YOUNG STONE, a butcher, charged with stealing the above Security, being a receipt for £ 800 : about 16 yrs. of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, fair complexion, light brown hair ; the day he absconded| he drew £ 400 from the Bank, on account, £ 300 of it being in £ 5 Bank of England Notes. j They were last seen together at Kings' Cross Station on the morning of the 22nd ultimo, having arrived by the mail train from Peterborough. £ 5 reward will be paid on their apprehension. Information to be given to Head Constable Hilton, Derby, who holds warrants for their apprehension.— Bow- street, July 14. Absconded from Barnstaple on the 29th ultimo, charged with forgery : GEORGE PENNY, a glover, and native of Yeovil, Somerset; about 35 years of age, 5 feet ; 6 inches high, dark straight hair, sallow complexion, dark whiskers, no moustache, and rather full face ; supposed to be dressed in dark brown mixture suit ( new), trousers and vest striped. Likely to emigrate, and has about £ 60 in his possession. Information to be given to Superintendent Blanchard, Barn- staple, Devonshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — jHow- street, July 10. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. On the night of the 14th instant, Robert Pybus, groom to H. Lawson, Esq., of Gatherley Castle, was stopped on the highway near to Catterick Railway Station, in the North Riding of Yorkshire, and robbed of a silver albert watch Guard, plain link pattern, and had a small foreign Coin Clothes ; a pair Coat and Vest ; a piece of Calico cut for a boy's shirt; a red Handkerchief, white spots ; a pair of ribbed cloth Trousers ; a plain light- coloured silk Handkerchief, marked ' J. Morris;' a spotted ditto, marked ' J. M.' with hair; a gold plated Locket and Chain; a pair of Ear- drops ; a black Watch Guard. By a man about 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, small whiskers inclined to be sandy ; dressed in a white slop, light- coloured cord or moleskin trousers, turned up at the bottom, cloth cap with peak and leather strap, good lace- up boots. After leaving the house he was seen to take his white slop off, put on one of the stolen coats, and put the other things in the slop and slung them over his shoulder ; he was seen at about 1 p. m. on the same day on the turnpike road about two miles from Chirk, and going in the direction of Wrexham. Information to be given to Superintendent Gough, Police Station, Oswestry, Salop.— Bow- street, July 17. During the nights of the 7th and 8th instant, a shoe- dealer's shop in Bolton, was twice broken and entered, and about twenty pairs of gentlemen's Boots stolen therein, all marked ' W.' on the soles and heels, also the private marks ' Rn/ c.', ' Re/ c.', and ' Rm/ c.', in ink and pencil, amongst them are nine pairs of elastic- sides, mock buttons, a pair of short Wellington, the remaining pairs are elastic- sides, some of which are crimped fronts, and two of them are odd ones; a silk Pocket- handkerchief, with red border, drab middle, with small diamond pattern in the centre, and a drab spot in the middle of the diamond ; and a red merino Bag. Information to be given to Chief Constable Beech, Borough Police Office, Bolton.— Bow- street, July 17,, HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen on the night of the - 12th instant, from a field at the parish . c Hornsea, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, the property of Mr. Carter, farmer : a light bay cart Mare, 5 years old, 16 hands high, white star on forehead, one hind foot or fetlock white, the hair chafed off the top of the neck by the collar, very good action, and is in good condition. Information to be given to Superintendent Wright, East Riding (: mstabulary, Police Station, Leven, Yorkshire.— Bow- strc't, July 17. Stobn from a field at Dorking, on the night of the 2nd ultimo, i he property of Mr. Bell, of the Star and Garter Hotel : a dark brown Mare, very old, about 15 hands high, very tender on the fore feet., and the near knee has been broken. Information to be given to Superintendent Page, Surrey Constabulary, Dorking.— Bow- street, July 17. Stolen from Windsor : a stout grey cob Mare, black spots on hind quarters, about 8 years old, 14£ hands high, tail cut nearly close to dock, has a ring on near shoulder from collar and trace, hair rubbed off near side ; a set of plated Harness, nearly new, initials ' L. T. H.' reversed on blinkers of bridle pad ; also a dark green dog Cart, makers ' Norwood Brothers, Coach Builders, Windsor,' on cap of wheels. By a man of the following description, about 28 years of age, about 5 feet 8£ inches high, florid complexion, light brown whiskers, and gentlemanly exterior and address ; dressed in dark clothes, and wore a massive chain. £ 7 or a proportionate reward will be paid on conviction of the offender. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Hayes, Police Station, Windsor, Berks.— Bow- street, July 17. Stolen during the night of the 14th instant, a light- coloured roan cob Horse, 4 years old, about 14^ hands high, neat small head, black mane and switch tail, black clean legs, with one white hind foot, has a lump about the size of a walnut under the outside of the hock on the near side, newly shod, and in good condition ; the property of Samuel Rose, of Great Raveley. Information to be given to Acting Superin- tendent Hamilton, Ramsey, Hunts.— Bow- street, July 17. Stolen from Wandsworth Common, on the 28th ultimo : a brown Cob, 14 hands high, 7 years old, white star on fore- black legs, rough mane, tail cut square.— Metropolitan Police, V Division, July 17. Stolen between the 7th and 8th instant, from Strensall Common, an aged bay Pony, 14 hands high, black legs, rather slack in the back, a few white hairs on near shoulder near the 2 POLK" ;<: ( I AZETT E. Found in a field at Tandridge, Surrey, on the 18th May last, supposed stolen : a blue roan mare Pony, aged, about 11 hands high, a ring branded on the near hind quarters. Stolen from a field at Staple Hill, in the parish of Man- gotsfield, on the night of the 7th instant: a light brown Mare, aged, about 14 hands high, switch tail, a star in the forehead, and one white foot behind, with a. scar under the off flank, in good condition, and carries her head down when travelling ; the property of Mr. Henry Watts, butcher. Information to be given to Superintendent Rawle, Fishponds, near Bristol. — Bm- street, July 14. Stolen from a farm near Sketty, in the parish of Oyster- mouth : an iron grey Pony, aged, about 12i- handshigb, black legs, mane, and tail, marked ' T.' behind the saddle, scarcely visible. Information to be given to Head Constable Allison, Swansea, Glamorgan.— Bow- street, July 12. Stolen from a field on the Congleton Moss, sometime during the night of the 7th instant : a Shropshire South- down fat Sheep, 1 year old, black head and legs, short tail, marked ' W. C.' with pitch on one side, or a dot of red painfi ou the shoulder or rump. A man of the following description was seen going through the town between 4 and 5 a. m. on the 8th instant, with a sheep tied with a string, he is 25 or 26 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, light brown hair cut short ; dressed iu a short black cutaway coat, aud white cord trousers. Information to be given to Head Constable Bohanua, Congleton, Cheshire, who will pay all reasonable expenses.— Bow- street, July 12. IARCEIY AID EMBEZZLEMENT. Absconded, charged with embezzlement: WILLIAM HARRY, 45 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark com- plexion, hair, whiskers, and moustache, and one eye nearly closed, covered with a shade ; dressed in brown coat, light trousers and vest, and round felt hat.— Metropolitan Police, Y Division, July 17. Absconded from Newport, Salop, on the 4th instant, charged with stealing a blue pilot cloth Jacket, lined with red and white plaid, two outside aud one inside left breast pockets, the property of Dominick Duffey : RICHARD J. BARBER, tramping cabinet maker, native of Ashton- under Lyne, Lancashire, 50 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, slender made, grey hair, aud little, ( if any) whiskers. Stolen from a bedroom at the " White Horse' inn,' Great Driffield, ou-- tke- 21st . ultimo, £ 14 iu. GWld and Silver :, by a man and woman, for whose apprehension a warrant has beeu issued, they are of the following description. GEORGE BINDER, a, baker, of Birmingham 21 years, of- age, 5 feet 3 inches liigli, daik complexion, dark eyes, brown hair, and slender figure ; dressed In dark coat" and vest, cord trousers, and clogs. ELLEN FOSTER, 20 years of age, 5 feet 3 ins. high, fresh complexion, dark hair, and stout figure ; dressed at the time of the robbery, in an old brown dress, trimmed with black, black jacket and hat, with velvet and feather, all black ; they left Sherburn Station, ou the York and Scar- borough Line, on the morning of the 22nd, booking to Normanton, and were seen in Sheffield, on the 23rd. Pinder's father is a baker, living in Birmingham, and the woman is a native of Leicester; they were in Halifax, previous to the robbery, and had with them at Driffield, a boy, 10 years of age, named Wads worth, who lives at Gardner's- square, Well- lane, Halifax ; this boy has been in custody, but discharged for want of evidence. They play at public- houses, the man a brass whistle, aud the woman a banjo, which they carry in a green baize cover. The man belongs to a brass band iu Birmingham. Information to be given to Superintendent Harper, Great Driffield, East Yorkshire.— Bow- street, July 14. Stolen on the 10th instant, from a public- house at Ports- mouth : a small Cash Box containing seven £ 5 Bank of England Notes, ,£ 48 iu Gold, and some Silver ; also a cheque for £ 6 2s., drawn by J. E. Greatorex, Esq., on the National Provincial Bank, Landport; a Cheque for £ 5, drawn by Mrs. Philps on Simmon's Bank, Rehding, and payable to Susan Philps ; a two- franc Piece ; an old Half- crown ; a life insurance Policy ; and a fire insurance ditto. Charged with fraud at Edinburgh : JAMES given to Deputy Chief Constable Richardson, Wellington, Salop— Bow- street, July 17. Description of THOMAS GEORGE WILLIAMS, a tramping shoemaker, committed for trial at the ensuing assizes for the county of Radnor, on a charge of larceny, 43 years of age, 5 feet 5£ inches high, swarthy complexion, hazel eyes, dark brown hair and whiskers, turning grey, wears a moustache, of slender make, slight scar near right eye, cut on left thumb. Description of a man giving the name of JOHN HOWARD, who is committed for trial at Folkestone Quarter Sessions, for robbing his lodgings, and the following Property was found upon him : the halves of four Bank of England Notes, one for £ 20, No. 32749, dated 6th J anuary, 1871, two J10, one No. 89694, 29th January, 1870, and one £ 5, No. 53014, April 29th, 1871; also a ticket of a lady's gold English lever Watch, engraved back, gold case and shield, at Long aud Bacons, Dover, 20th June, 1871, in the name of John Howard ; also gold lever Watch, 13th May, 1871, at Thomas and Henry Devenport's, for £ 5, in the name of John Smith ; also a basket of Tools, March 17, 1871, at Davidson's, Waterloo- road, Lambeth, in the name of Thomas Watts ; also a Greatcoat, 18th May, 1871, Emanuel's, Southampton ; also supposed to be stolen from his lodgings. JESSE DALE, a convict, now under sentence of seven years penal servitude, escaped from Grantham Gaol on the night of the 13th instant. He is of the following descrip- tion : 28 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, pale complexion, long thin face, no whiskers, and slightly pockmarked, the letter J and an anchor ou the right forearm, also a ring and five dots on the back of the right hand, the mark of a ring on the first, second, and third fingers of left hand; dressed at the time of his escape in grey clothes and blue striped shirt, boots marked inside No. 8, jacket and stockings since found. The same man escaped from Grantham Gaol twice in 1864 ; he is a native of Birmingham, and an associate of travelling thieves. Five Pounds reward will be paid for his apprehension. Description of a man who gives the name of JOHN HARROLD, committed to Northallerton Gaol for one month under the Vagrant Act : he is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 4£ inches high, brown hair, blue eyes, fresh complexion, whiskers round chin, teeth very irregular in front; dressed in black shooting coat, black vest and trousers, stiff body hat, and elastic- side boots; states he was born in Man- chester, but has ben in America for some years, also that he served seven years in the Army Reserve Corps. Further information respecting the carpenter's Tools stolen from an unfinished house at Eastbourne on the 2nd, and advertised, in the Police Gazette of the 5th instant: one of the 6- inch Squares has been recovered, having been sold at Fletching on the 3rd instant, and the 12- inch Square has been recovered, having been sold at East Grinstead on the 4th instant, by a man about 40 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, light complexion, sunburnt, and slightly pitted with small- pox, grey eyes, brown hair, rusty beard and moustache of about two months' growth, and proportionate figure ; dressed in soft- crowned hat with spring brim, dark tweed coat torn at the elbows, cord trousers, two coloured woollen shirts, and heavy half boots cut at the front to ease the feet, one boot has a piece let in the front opposite the lace- holes ; stated he was a carpenter, was born in Dublin, but belonged now to Bermondsey, London, had been in the army 5 years, and was discharged in consequence of being ruptured.
