The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and oih"~ marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as acc e as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Ilorses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 5067 FRIDAY, JULY 7, 1871. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to ME. W. D. BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INF ORMATI 0 N S. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. On the 6th March last Thomas Dodgson, of Darlington, publican, was violently assaulted by a man named DAVID LEVY, who was convicted of the assault, and sentenced to seven days' imprisonment. On the 30th ultimo Dodgson died from the effects of the injuries inflicted upon him, and a coroner's inquest was held on the body on the lst instant, and a verdict of manslaughter was returned against Levy. He is 67 years of age, 5 feet 4| inches high, fair complexion, grey eyes, grey hair and whiskers, and slender figure ; dressed, when last seen, in old black cloth frock coat, dark vest, brown trousers, and brown felt billycock hat. He is frequently em- ployed as a drover, sometimes gives recitations in public- houses, and is likely to be found at cattle markets or fairs. Information to be given to Superintendent Rogers, Police Office, Darlington, Durham.— Bow- street, July 7. Found on Thornham Beach, early on the morning of the 27th ultimo, the body of a man who h& d been shot in the breast : he appears to be between 20 and 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches long, proportionate made, blue eyes, fair com- plexion, delicate hands, light hair, a few sandy hairs on the chin, thin light eyebrows ; dressed in dark Bedford cord coat, vest, and trousers, which are rather worn, coat and vest lined with blue striped lining, cap of similar material and colour, nearly new, with crown hooked down to peak, spring- side boots, peg made, have been half soled, and are rather worn, white cotton shirt, much worn, marked ' F. C. S.' in black ink, on the lower part of bosom, white cotton guernsey, marked on the same part and same way, white cotton drawers, much worn, marked ' F. C. S.' on the left side of waistband, grey- coloured cotton socks, much worn, and black silk necktie. Found in the pockets of deceased 2s. 7£ d. in money and several fulminating pocket- pistol cartridges. Also found covered up in the sand at a distance from the body a black silk hat, rather worn, a brown alpaca umbrella, brown handle and iudia rubber ring, has been much used for walking, some slices of ham, a paper collar, 15 size, a linen ditto, same size, maker ' J. Bentley, 26, Shoreditch, and ' G. E. Ry.,' a black- handled razor, on blade ' Gibbons' one shilling razor, Rotherfield- street, Islington,' a small bottle, containing lavender water, labelled ' T. G. Worger, dispensing chemist, 29, Chiswell- street, Finsbury- square.' The deceased is supposed to have arrived by the excursion train from London to Hunstanton on the 26th ultimo. An inquest was held on the body on the 28th ultimo, and is adjourned till the 4th instant. A pellet was found in the body of the deceased, which corresponds with those found in his pocket. Information to be given to Superintendent Rose, Docking, King's Lynn, Norfolk.— Bow- street, July 3. Constable Hilton, Derby, who holds warrants for their appre- hension.— Bow- street, July 5. Description of a man named JAMES ALLEN, late of West Bromwich, iron founder, who is charged with feloniously forging a certain acceptance of a certain Bill of Exchange, for the payment of £ 20, with intent to defraud one Abraham Russell, who absconded on the 28th ultimo, and for whom a warrant is granted for his apprehension : he is about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 5 inches high, light complexion, light blue eyes, light brown hair, sandy whiskers and moustache, high forehead, by trade a moulder in an iron foundry ; when not at work he is usually dressed in dark cloth coat., fancy vest, dark with blue intermixed, light brown trousers, elastic- side boots, and a black silk hat ; when at work, he is dressed in a moleskin suit. He is known to have gone to Liverpool with his wife and four children, one of them an infant. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Woollaston, Police Office, West Bromwich, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, Julh 3. Absconded about a month since charged on a warrant with forging a cheque for £ 30 : PETER TATTON, late of No. 57, Trinity- street., Borough, a traveller in the sack trade, 38 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, stout build, sallow complexion, little or no whiskers, dark brown hair, large mouth, thick lips ; dressed in a grey mixture coat and vest, dark trousers and high black hat. Well known to potato salesmen. Information to be given to Inspector Bailey, City of London Police, Detective Department, No. 26, Old Jewry, London, E. C.— Bow- street, July 3. Obtained from a goldsmith at Chester, on the 20th inst., by means of a forged order : eight silver Watches, six lever, Nos. 14041, 909, 1317, 15200, 2860, and 11284, two hunting, Nos. 14752 and 14794, maker's name on each watch ' Lowe and Son, Chester'; six gold albert Guards, one curb pattern, one belcher pattern, one secret link, the whole marked either 1 9 or 10- carat.' Description of the man who presented the order : 35 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, fresh complexion, and light sandy whiskers ; dressed in black billycock hat, black coat and vest, and woollen cord trousers. morning of the robbery; he stated that he came from Staffordshire Potteries, that he had a brother an umbrella mender in the Shropshire Militia, that he was on a visit for a week at Holywell ; from 30 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, sandy hair, and whiskers under chin, fawn freckled on face ; dressed in a hard black felt billycock hat, black cloth jacket, pockets on hips, black cloth vest, dark mixture clotli trousers, proportionate built. Information to be given to Superintendent Thomas, Mold, Flintshire.— Bow- street, July 5. Stolen from a dwelling- house at Darley Dale, by means of housebreaking, on the morning of the 30th ultimo ; a black cloth Coat, a black double Shawl, and a black billycock Hat, the property of Joseph Fearn. Supposed by a man and a woman ( tramps) : the man is about 30 years of age, dressed in a white slop and brown cap, and was selling writing paper; the woman, who is about 26 years of age, was wearing a black shawl and a white apron. Information to be given to Superintendent Sharpe, Wirksworth, or to Inspector Sims, Matlock Bath, Derbyshire.— Bow street, July 3. Between 11 p. m. on the 30th ultimo and 5 a. m. on the lst instant, the dwelling- house of William Mossford, stone- mason, Nantwich- road, was entered by the kitchen window, which was loose, and the following articles stolen therein : a lustered half- pint Cup ; a Pincushion, in the form of a box, on four legs, covered with velvet, has small shells all round, and in gold letters ' A Present from Manchester ;' a chenille Shawl, grey, ^ ith puce stripe mingled with grey about three inches from the edge, grey fringe ; a pair of lady's new buff kid Gloves, 7i size; about 5 yards of white Calico ; fourteen pairs of children's cotton Socks, ribbed ; and four pairs of woman's white cotton Stockings, marked with scarlet, 1 J. Between H p. m. and 3 a. m. on the night of the 30th ultimo, the dwelling- liouse of Ann Cureton, of Lee Bridges, in the parish of Ellesmere, Salop, was burglariously broken and entered by taking a pane of glass out of the kitchen win- Information to be given to Chief Constable Fen wick, Town dow, unfastening the same, and the following property stolen Hall, Chester.— Bow- street, June 30. j therein : a wooden Pipe with a small chain attached and a pin J ! at the end ; a Cheese Taster ; two wax Candles ; a red and black woollen Shirt; a pair of elastic Braces; and a Pistol. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM : Information to be given to Superintendent Gough, Oswestry, THE PERSON. ! or to Sergeant Duncan, Ellesmere, Salop.— Bow- street, July 3 Stolen from the person of a gentleman at Harlech Castle, j Stolen early on the morning of the 29th ultimo, at Merionethshire, on the 30th ultimo : a gold lever Watch, ; Swanley, Kent, by means of housebreaking : a silver half No. 1254, maker Paul Price, Chester ; it had a second No. in pint Mug, marked ' E. W.;' a bottle of Brandy ; a bottle of the case, marked with a tool ' 1403,' the seconds and minute Curacao ; about £ 1 in Silver and bronze ; two half Franks ; fingers were off. Information to be given to Superintendent and a small ivory and gilt Opera Glass. Stolen from the person of a gentleman on the field at! Between 9 p. m. 27th and 5' 30 a. m. on the 28th ultimo, the Thornton Abbey Review of Volunteers on the 30th the dwelling- house of John Basford, farmer, Wistaston, near ultimo : a silver lever Watch, ' J. S. Pilfoot,' engraved on , Crewe, was entered by breaking open the back kitchen back of inner case, silver dial, gold figures, sunk seconds, and window, and stolen therein : a pair of men's black cloth gold swivel attached. Information to be given to i Superintendent Laxton, Nantwich, or to Inspector Wood, BURGLARY AND HOUSE | ^ **> Between 11 p. m. on the 28th, and 6' 30 a. m. on the i 29th ultimo, the dwelling- house of Thomas Lloyd, of Wren- Between 2' 30 and 6 a. m. on the 5th instant, the jeweller's ; bury Mill, near Nantwich, Cheshire, was burglariously broken shop of Mr. William Davies, Castle- street, Dudley, was and entered by breaking a pane of glass in the kitchen broken and entered, and the following articles stolen therein : ; window, aud unfastening the same, and the following property 3 gold consular lever Watches, one gentleman's ( gold ; stolen therein : about 20s. in Silver, mostly in sixpences ; an dial, No. 5795), one lady's ( No^ 6725), and the other 0ld silver verge Watch, No. supposed 12097, with brass FORGERY. Absconded from the borough of Derby on the 21st ult.: THOMAS STONE, charged with forging a name to a security, being a receipt for £ 800, by means of which James Young Stone obtained £ 400 : he is about 28 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, no beard or whiskers, dark brown hair, sallow complexion, high cheek bones, a deep scar on the right cheek, from the kick of a horse when a boy, quick in manners, rather slender build, has been a fish and poultry dealer. Also absconded from the borough of Derby, on the 21st ult. JAMES YOUNG STONE, a butcher, charged with stealing the above Security, being a receipt for £ 800 : about 16 yrs. of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, fair complexion, light brown hair ; the day he abscondedjhe drew £ 400 from the Bank, on account, £ 300 of it being in £ 5 Bank of England Notes. They were last seen together at Kings' Cross Station on the morning of the 22nd ultimo, having arrived by the mail train from Peterborough. Information to be given to Head has an enamelled dial (' W. Davies' on dial and movements). 1 lady's gold English lever Watch, gold dial and figures, ' W. Davies' on back. 2 gold Consular Geneva Watches, with flat glasses and enamelled dials, Nos. 38603 and 14651. 1 gold lever Watch, seconds hand, No. 75080. 1 gold enamelled lever Watch, gold dial, seconds hand, No. 83938. 2 small gold consular Geneva Watches, gold dials, Nos.* 58769 and 71173. 12 silver hunting Lever Watches, seven enamelled dials ( sunk seconds, Nos. 3668, 22800, 23767, 21707, 23995, 22547, and 21709), one small size, and four without bows. Most of them marked ' W. Davies, Dudley.' 2 silver consular Watches, one seconds hand ( duplex Geneva), the other enamelled dial ( keyless). 19 ladies' and gentlemen's Geneva Watches. 8 gold Albert Chains. 6 gold Chains. 1 massive secret- link Chain. 1 massive graduated belcher- faced Albert Chain. 26 ladies' Rings. 38 gentlemen's Rings. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Burton, Borough of Dudley, Worcestershire.— Bow- street, July 7. During the night of the 22nd, or morning of the 23rd ultimo, the dwelling- house of John Jones, farmer, Kinnerton, Flintshire, was entered by the parlour window, which was left insecure, and the following stolen therein : £ 15 in Gold, and about £ 2 10s. in Silver. A man of the following description is suspected, who was seen near the house on the j guard Chain attached ; a large cameo Brooch, with female's head on it; a spade Ace Guinea ; a Bengal Shilling ; a metal Medal, about the size of a crown piece, building engraved on it; a crooked Sixpence ; a metal Medal, struck off in commemoration of Queen Victoria's Coronation; andj a reconnoitering Glass, the name ' Salom, 137, Regent- street, London, and 98, Princes- strest, Edinburgh,' engraved there- on. Information to be given to Superintendent Laxton, County Police, Nantwich, Cheshire.— Bow- street, July 3. Stolen by means of housebreaking at Widford, Essex, on the 27th instant: four silver Table Spoons, marked ' B. ;' four Salt Spoons, marked ' C. B.;' six plated Spoons, with open work on handles; two silver Dessert Spoons ; six plated Prongs, open work on handles; a silver Snuff- box, ' A. B.' on lid ; a gold mourning Brooch, onyx stone; a gold Brooch, with ' Elizabeth Barnard' on back; three small gold Brooches, one with hair, set with gold and pearls, with ' Nash' engraved on back, the other two with hair set in gold ; a chased gold Locket, with a curl of black hair and glass face; a gold mourning Ring, with large hoops,' Nash' engraved on inside ; and a silver plated Inkstand ; the property of E. Stolen early ou the morning of the 5th instant, from the farm yaid of Mr. Thomas Bramhall, of Hurst, a bay Horse, with clean white legs, 15 hands high, wall eye, and newly shod ; a milk Cart, on springs, painted black, r^ d and white striped wheels, and Mossley,' painted'- in a circle on the near side ; t\ yo .. sets of Harness.; and n dmb Overcoat. Information to be given to Super- intendent Ludlam, Wilshaw, near Ashton- under- Lyne, Staf- fordshire.— Bow- street, July 7. Stolen, a blue roan liorse Pony, 12 hands high, aged, iu poor condition, has some of old coat on, dark legs, cut tail, rough mane, goes oil its toes behind, light speck in one eye. Two men of the following description were seen taking it from Hoadesdon towards Londou, on the night of the 30th ult. : one about 5 feet 6 inches high, about 30 years of age, of gipsy- like appearance, dark complexion, dark hair and whiskers ; dressed in long blue worsted guernsey reaching to about middle of thighs, aud a rough black cap. The other about .55 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, of gipsy- like appear- ance, hair turning grey, little whiskers; dressed in cord jacket, breeches and gaiters, and black billy hat turned up at. sides. These men frequent fairs aud races with cocoa nuts, to be thrown at by sticks. They have two vans with them, the name on one beiiig ' Harris.' They are supposed to frequent Kent and Essex, and were traced in the direction of London, where they were going to get' a fresh supply of cocoa nuts. Stolen from, a field at Soughton, near Mold, on the night of the- 3rd instant, a- black milch Cow, 3 years old, short horns, hair line and very smooth, the property of Mr. John Roberts. Information to be given to Superintendent Thomas,, Mold, Flintshire.— Bow- street, July 5. Stolen on the night of the 1st instant, from a field at Sedgley Park, a light brown male Ass, about 6 years old, and in good condition, the property of Mr. William Read. Information to be given to Inspector Tomlinson, Police Station, Sedgley, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, July 3. Stolen from the Rhymney Mountain, on the night of the 20tli ultimo, the property of Evan Evans, farmer, Bute Town, near Rhymney : two mare mountain Ponies, one a light bay, . aged, about 12 hands high, small star on forehead, black mane, rather long, tail,' J' on near hind leg ; the other black, 2 years old', about 11 hands high, long mane and tail. Some Gipsies who Were camping in the neighbourhood at the time are suspected. Information to be given to Superintendent Thomas, Deputy Chief Constable, Constabulary Office, Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorganshire.— Bow- street, July 3. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Stolen from a dwelling- house in the borough of Staly- bridge, early on the morning of the 5th instant . £ 4 10s. in money. By a man who had been lodging in the same house two ftights previously, of the following description, viz., 40 years of age,, 5 feet 9 inches high, sandy hair and whiskers, and is an Irishman ; dressed in white linen jacket, a drab and , a dark cloth vest, white cotton cord trousers, black soft billycock hat, green striped neckerchief, and water- tight boots with iron plates on the toes. Stated that he had lived a long rime with a farmer at Louth, in Lincolnshire, named Norfolk, for whom he worked a thrashing machine, and that he was a member of a Foresters' Club in Louth. Information to be given to Chief Constable Chadwick, Stalybridge, Lancashire.— Bow- street, July 7. Absconded from the borough of Evesham, on the 26th ultimo, cbaiged ona warrant with stealing a gold Watch: HENRY BLAKEMAN, 16 years of age, about 5 feet 4 ins. high, proportionate figure, light hair, fair complexion, large heavy looking eyes, a small mole on right cheek, and a few black hairs growing from it, and has an impediment in his speech ; supposed to be dressed in a dark jacket and vest, straw hat or black round bil'lycock, brown mixture cloth trousers, and elastic- side boots, of a respectable appearance, is fond of smokirg, and has a straight imitation meerschaum pipe, in a black case; is an apprentice to the printing and stationery business, and probably will be found seeking em- ployment at some printers' and stationer's shop. Information to be given to Inspector Mann, Evesham, Worcestershire.— Bow- street, July 5. Absconded from Southampton on the 1st instant charged with stealing £ 70 : WILLIAM THOMAS FREWIN, an outfitter's apprentice, 16 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, dark coarse red hair, florid complexion ; dressed in dark cloth shooting jacket, dark trousers and vest, side- spring boots, and hard round felt hat, wore a silver watch aud gold albert chain. Information to be given to Superintendent Breary, Police Station, Southampton, who holds a warrant for his apprehen- sion.— Bow- street, July 5. Stolen from Pershore, Worcestershire, on the 27th ult., a double- case silver verge Watch, seconds hand broken, with steel Chain and two 3d. Pieces attached ; a dark cloth double- breasted Jacket, narrow orange stripe, with black velvet collar and silk facings, pockets outside, nearly new; a silk Hat, high- crowned, maker ' Edwards, West Bromwich,' on inside lining ; and a hogskin Purse, containing a Sovereign : by a man named THOMAS HILL, by trade a saddler, a native of Walsall, about 26 years of age ( looks younger), 5 feet 6 inches high, fair hair, cut short, no whiskers, and small moustache; dressed in light- coloured double- breasted jacket, with dark facings, fashiouable make, brown sealskin waist- coat, black and white speckled trousers, with black stripe down the leg, blue and white shirt, and wearing the stolen hat. Was seen in Worcester, with the whole of the stolen property in his possession. He is well known in Birmingham, and other towns, as a saddler, aud has friends at Aston, near Birmingham. Supposed to have gone to Bristol. Supposed by a man of the following description who lodged in the house the two nights previous, and stated he was a tramping watch and clock cleaner, from Glasgow : about 22 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, no whiskers, slender built, and has a burn mark oil the back of left hand ; dressed iu dark cloth coat and vest, dark brown cloth trousers, with black and brown stripes, and much worn at the bottom, black billycock hat, and elastic- side boots, and he carries with him a black leather satchel, which contains his tools.
