POLICE GAZETTE. fcg Sfotfmitg, CONTAINING 1 The substance of all Informations received in eases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of ah aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 5064 MONDAY, JULY 3, 1871. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MB. W. D, BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, " W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. ' 9 or 10- carat.' Description of the man who presented the order : 35 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, fresh complexion, and light sandy whiskers ; dressed in black billycock hat, black coat and vest, and woollen cord trousers. Information to be given to Chief Constable Fenwick, Town Hall, Chester.— Bow- street, June 30. Description of a man remanded at Mistley, Essex, charged with forgery at Little Bromley, on the 19th instant: he at first refused his address, but ultimately gave the name of JOHN WEST, Liverpool Dock, labourer, which is supposed to be fictitious : he is 43 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, grey eyes, has had large bushy whiskers, which have been recently shaven off, has thin whiskers meeting under the chin remaining ; dressed in black ribbed cloth coat and vest, cord trousers, low black felt hat, with an elastic hold- fast attached, and spring- side boots, with toe- caps. He had also in his possession a Yankee brown felt wide- a- wake; be is supposed to have committed offences elsewhere. Information to be given to Inspector Ackers, Police Station, Mistley, Essex.— Bow- street, June 23. INFORMATIONS MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Found on Thornham Beach, early on the morning of the ,27th ultimo, the body of a man who Md been shot in the breast : he appears to lie between 20 and 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches long, proportionate made, blue eyes, fair com- plexion, delicate hands, light hair, a few sandy hairs on the chin, thin light eyebrows ; dressed in dark Bedford cord coat, vest, and trousers, which are rather worn, coat and vest lined with blue striped lining, cap of similar material and colour, nearly new, with crown hooked down to peak, spring- side boots, peg made, have been half soled, and are rather worn, white cotton shirt, much worn, marked 1 F. C. S.' in black ink, on the lower part of bosom, white cotton guernsey, marked on the same part and same way, \ white cotton drawers, much worn, marked ' F. C. S.' on the left side of waistband, grey- coloured cotton socks, much worn, and black silk necktie. Found in the pockets of deceased 2s. 7Jd. in money and several fidminating pocket- pistol cartridges. Also found covered up in the sand at a distance from the body a black silk hat, rather worn, a brown alpaca umbrella, brown handle and india rubber ring, has been much used for walking, some slices of ham, a paper collar, 15 size, a linen ditto, same size, maker ' J. Bentley, 26, Shoreditch, and ' Q. E. By.,' a black- handled razor, on blade ' Gibbons' one shilling razor, Rotherfield- street, Islington,' a small bottle, containing lavender water, labelled ' T. G. Worger, • dispensing chemist, 29, Chiswell- street, Finsbury- square.' The deceased is supposed to have arrived by the excursion train from London to Hunstanton on the 26th ultimo. An inquest was held on the body on the 28th ultimo, and is adjourned till the 4th instant. A pellet was found in the body of the deceased, which corresponds with those found in his pocket. Information to be given to Superintendent Rose, Docking, King's Lynn, Norfolk.— Bow- street, July 3. FORGERY. Description of a man named JAMES ALLEN, late of West Bromwich, iron founder, who is charged with feloniously forging a certain acceptance of a certain Bill of Exchange, for the payment of £ 20, with intent to defraud one Abraham Russell, who absconded on the 28th ultimo, and for whom a warrant is granted for his apprehension : he is about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 5 inches high, light complexion, light blue eyes, light brown hair, sandy whiskers and moustache, high forehead, by trade a moulder in an iron foundry ; when not at work he is usually dressed in dark cloth coat, fancy vest, dark with blue intermixed, light brown trousers, elastic- side boots, and a black silk hat ; when at work, he is dressed in a moleskin suit. He is known to have gone to Liverpool with his wife and four children, one of them an infant. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Woollaston, Police Office, West Bromwich, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, Julh 3. Absconded about a month since charged on a warrant with forging a cheque for £ 30 : PETER TATTON, late of No. 57, Trinity- street, Borough, a traveller in the sack trade, 38 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, stout build, sallow complexion, little or no whiskers, dark brown hair, large mouth, thick lips ; dressed in a grey mixture coat and vest, dark trousers and high black hat. Well known to potato salesmen. Information to be given to Inspector Bailey, City of London Police, Detective Department, No. 26, Old Jewry, London, E. C.— Bow- street, July 3. Obtained from a goldsmith at Chester, on the 20th inst., by means of a forged order : eight silver Watches, six lever, Nos. 14041, 909, 1317, 15200, 2860, and 11284, two hunting, Nos. 14752 and 14794, maker's name on each watch ' Lowe and Son, Chester'; six gold albert Guards, one curb pattern, one belcher pattern, one secret link, the whole marked either ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of a gentleman on the field at the Thornton Abbey Review of Volunteers on the 30th ultimo : a silver lever Watch, ' J. S. Pilfoot,' engraved on back of inner case, silver dial, gold figures, sunk seconds, and gold swivel attached. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Thorsby, Barton- on- Humber, Lincolnshire.— Bow- st., July 3. Stolen from the person of a gentleman in the borough of Rochdale, on the 24th instant : a silver skeleton lever Watch, No. 3906, maker James D. Moss, Liverpool, ' A. Brearley' engraved on the inside case. Information to be given to Chief Constable Stevens, Rochdale.— Bow- street, June 28. Description of WILLIAM HAMPSTON, of Ifton Common, in the parish of Ellesmere, Salop, charged with stealing on the night of the 16th instant, on the highway at Saint Martin's, from the person of Edward Davies, a silver Watch : he is 27 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, dark brown hair, whiskers shaved off, light moustache, active appearance ; dressed in a dark brown cloth jacket and black billycock hat; a shoemaker by trade, and belongs to the Denbighshire Militia. The watch was sold by William Hampston in Wrexham, on the 17th instant, and has been recovered. Information to be given to Superintendent Gough, County Constabulary Office, Oswestry, Shropshire.— Bow- st., June 23. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen from a dwelling- house at Darley Dale, by means of housebreaking, on the morning of the 30th ultimo : a black cloth Coat, a black double Shawl, and a black billycock Hat, the property of Joseph Fearn. Supposed by a man and a woman ( tramps): the man is about 30 years of age, dressed in a white slop and brown cap, and was selling writing paper; the woman, who is about 26 years of age, was wearing a black shawl and a white apron. Information to be given to Superintendent Sharpe, Wirksworth, or to Inspector Sims, Matlock Bath, Derbyshire.— Bow- street, July 3. Between 11 p. m. on the 30th ultimo and 5 a. m. on the 1st instant, the dwelling- house of William Mossford, stone- mason, Nantwich- road, was entered by the kitchen window, which was loose, and the following articles stolen therein : a lustered half- pint Cup ; a Pincushion, in the form of a box, on four legs, covered with velvet, has small shells all round, and in gold letters ' A Present from Manchester ;' a chenille Shawl, grey, with puce stripe mingled with grey about three inches from the edge, grey fringe ; a pair of lady's new buff kid Gloves, 7- J size; about 5 yards of white Calico ; fourteen pairs of children's cotton Socks, ribbed ; and four pairs of woman's white cotton Stockings, marked with scarlet, ' J. M.' Information to be given to Superintendent Laxton, Nantwich, or to Inspector Wood, Crewe, Cheshire. Bow- street, July 3. Between 11 p. m. and 3 a. m. on the night of the 30th ultimo, the dwelling- house of Ann Cureton, of Lee Bridges, in the parish of Ellesmere, Salop, was burglariously broken and entered by taking a pane of glass out of the kitchen win- dow, unfastening the same, and the following property stolen therein : a wooden Pipe with a small chain attached and a pin at the end ; a Cheese Taster ; two wax Candles ; a red and black woollen Shirt; a pair of elastic Braces; and a Pistol. Information to be given to Superintendent Gough, Oswestry, or to Sergeant Duncan, Ellesmere, Salop.— Bow- street, July 3. Stolen early on the morning of the 29th ultimo, at Swanley, Kent, by means of housebreaking : a silver half pint Mug, marked ' E. W.;' a bottle of Brandy ; a bottle of Curacao ; about £ 1 in Silver and bronze ; two half Franks ; and a small ivory and gilt Opera Glass. Information to be given to Superintendent Brandon, Police Station, Dartford, Kent.— Bow- street, July 3. Between 9 p. m. 27th and 5' 30 a. m. on the 28th ultimo, the dwelling- house of John Basford, farmer, Wistaston, near Crewe, was entered by breaking open the back kitchen window, and stolen therein : a pair of men's black cloth Trousers, nearly sew, fall fronts ; a new cotton Umbrella, dark colour, light coloured wood handle, whalebone, elastic band round, and oil case. Information to be given to Superintendent Laxton, Nantwich, or to Inspector Wood, Crewe, Cheshire.— Bow- street, July 3. Between 11 p. m. on the 28th, and 6" 30 a. m. on the 29th ultimo, the dwelling- house of Thomas Lloyd, of Wren- bury Mill, near Nantwich, Cheshire, was burglariously broken and entered by breaking a pane of glass in the kitchen window, and unfastening the same, and the following property stolen therein : about 20s. in Silver, mostly in sixpences ; an old silver verge Watch, No. supposed 12097, with brass guard Chain attached ; a large cameo Brooch, with female's head on it; a spade Ace Guinea ; a Bengal Shilling ; a metal Medal, about the size of a crown piece, building engraved on it; a crooked Sixpence ; a metal Medal, struck off in commemoration of Queen Victoria's Coronation; and] a reconnoitering Glass, the name ' ISalom, 137, Regent- street, London, and 98, Princes- strest, Edinburgh,' engraved there- on. Information to be given to Superintendent Laxton, County Police, Nantwich, Cheshire.— Bow- street, July 3. Stolen by means of housebreaking at Widford, Essex, on the 27th instant: four silver Table Spoons, marked ' B. ;' four Salt Spoons, marked ' C. B. ;' six plated Spoons, with open work on handles; two silver Dessert Spoons; six plated Prongs, open work on handles; a silver Snuff- box, ' A. B.' on lid ; a gold mourning Brooch, onyx stone; a gold Brooch, with ' Elizabeth Barnard' on back; three small gold Brooches, one with hair, set with gold and pearls, with ' Nash' engraved on back, the other two with hair set in gold ; a chased gold Locket, with a curl of black hair and glass face; a gold mourning Ring, with large hoops, ' Nash' engraved on inside ; and a silver plated Inkstand ; the property of E. A. Barnard. Information to be given to Superintendent Dobson, Chelms- ford, Essex.— Bow- street, June 30. Further information respecting the robbery at Fulmer Hall, the residence of Lady Willoughby, on the night of the 13th, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 16th instant: also stolen, two bronze Figures on horses, about 12 inches long and 12 inches high, one figure represents a Turk, the other an Arab, the plume of the head- dress of one of them is missing, and the horses are mounted on a flat black oblong stand. Information to be given to Superintendent Dunham, Slough, or to Inspector Sutton, Iver, Bucks.— Bow- street, June 28. On the night of the 13th, or on the morning of the 14th instant, some person or persons did steal from the house of Agnes Eccles, of Broad Walk, Buxton, the following property : a lady's gold lever Watch, No. 13934, larger than lady's ordinary watches, black Guard; a silver lever hunting Watch, Robert Roskell, Liverpool, No. 47413, albert steel Chain attached ; a silver pencil Case, old- fashioned, a red stone at one end, and a piece of black lead pencil at the other; £ 30 in Bank of England Notes, four £ 5 and a £ 10 ; £ 5 10s. in Gold; about £ 1 in Silver ; and 2d. in Coppers. £ 12 reward will be paid on such information as will lead to the apprehension of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Superintendent Hudson, Chapel- en- le- Frith ; or to Inspector Barson, Buxton, Derby.— Bow- street, June 26. During the night of the 19th or morning of the 20th instant, the dwelling- house of Robert Roberts, of Chorlton, Cheshire, was entered by means of taking out a square of glass and unfastening the kitchen window, and the following property stolen therein : two Shirts, all linen, men's size, high collars, with two buttons on each collar, may be marked ' R. Roberts' with cotton ; two silk Handkerchiefs, one brown and orange, the other black with a white spot; a large Muffler, black and white plaid; four pairs of black kid Gloves ; and a pair of blucher Boots, newly soled. A man who called the previous evening selling needles is suspected : he is supposed to be a shoemaker, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, full short face, dark hair, and small dark whiskers ; had on a brown or snuff- coloured jacket and dark cap. This man left behind him in a meadow the following articles, which are believed to be stolen: a pair of cord Trousers, coarse canvas pockets ; a blue check Shirt, narrow stripe ; a white cotton Skirt; a black cloth Vest, new, single- breasted, black covered buttons ; and a pair of lace- up Boots, newly soled, without any nails, tips on heels. Information to be given to Superintendent Wilson, Tattenhall, near Chester, or to Sergeant Powell, Police Station, Malpas, Cheshire.— Bow- street, June 26. During the night of the 20th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. James Weatherby, of Woking, was entered by the parlour window, which was left unfastened, and the following articles stolen therein : six Tea Spoons, Toast Rack, Sugar Spoon, Mustard Spoon, and a Stopper from a Cayenne Bottle, all silver, crest— hand and spear ; also a man's suit of tweed Clothes, the Coat and Waistcoat dark, and the Trousers light; and an alpaca Umbrella. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Barker, Surrey Constabulary, Guildford.—• Bow- street, June 23. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen on the night of the 1st instant, from a field at Sedgley Park, a light brown male Ass, about 6 years old, and in good condition, the property of Mr. William Read. Information to be given to Inspector Tomlinson, Police Station, Sedgley, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, July 3. Stolen from the Rhymney Mountain, on the night of the IvCtE iii'E. Some Gipsies who were camping in the neighbourhood at the time are suspected. Description of JOHN GRACE, of Lillingstone Dayrell, Bucks, charged on a warrant with stealing a Horse ;> t Stowe on the 8th ultimo, the property of Langton Bennett: 25 years of age,, 5 fset 10 inches high, light hair, little or no whiskers, pockpitted ; dressed when he absconded in a light cotton cord jacket aud trousers, black' billycock / hat, and lace- vrp • shoes • about 4 years ago he worked on the Midland Railway near London as a navvy, and it is supposed he will seek for similar employment on railway works. Absconded- on the 12th instant, charged On a warrant with embezzlement: ALFRED BECK, late of Cheriton- villa, Northumberland- park, Tottenham, solicitor's clerk,'^ from 36 to 40 years of, age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fresh com- plexion, puffy face, slightly pockpitted, black hair, whiskers, beard, and moustache, stout build, and of respectable appear- ance ;- dressed in dark; frock coat, vest, and trousers, infer- LARCENY AND ' EMBEZZLEMENT. Absconded from Coventry, on the 27th ultimo, charged with embezzling ,£ 20.: WILLIAM BELIDE, a solicitor's clerk, about 34 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair com- plexion, brown hair, slight light brown shaggy whiskers and moustache, steps short and quick when walking, and with a stooping shuffling gait; was dressed in a dark topcoat, buff- coloured waistcoat, light troupers, high black silk hat, and spring- side boots. He is a native of London, but well known at Brackley, in Northamptonshire, and at Banbury, Oxon. Information to be- given to Head Constable Norris, Coventry, Warwick.— Bow- street, July 3. Absconded ' from Church Gresley, Derbyshire, on the 24th ultimo, charged on a warrant with embezzling in April last, < the stun of £ 6 14s. 9d., the monies of Thomas Goodwin Green, his master : EDWARD GEORGE AMOR, 26 years of age ( looks older), 5 feet 9 inches' high, florid complexion, light blue eyes, dark brown hair, slightly grey in front; parted • down centre, brown whiskers and moustache, decayed teeth in front, walks with a short quick step, turns his toes out, and is rather round shouldered ; dressed in blue cloth frock . coat,- brown cloth , vest and trousers, and black silk hat ; is of respectable1 appearance, and ' well educated ; he is a native of the West End of London, and has friends residing at Haw- ley, Stoke- on- Trent, and Burslam. Information to be given to Superintendent Carline, Wooden Box, near Burton- on- Trent, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, July 3. Absconded on the! 27th instant, from 26, Marquess- road, stealing a £ 5 Note, and £ 17 in Gold : a woman, 20 years of - age, 5 feet 8 inches high, stout, fair complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, flat face, low forehead ; dressed in cotton print • dress, black shawl, blue bonnet.— Metropolitan Police, N Division, June 30. Description bf a man; charged with stealing a'gold Watch ( since recovered), from an hotel in Brighton, where he stayed one night, leaving on the afternoon of the 27tli instant : about 35 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, fair complexion, full blue eyes, light brown hair and whiskers, and pleasing open countenance ; dressed in dark grey suit, white straw hat; had with him- a brown leather Hat Box and a black leather Bag. Had the ( Appearance of a country gentleman. Infor- mation to be. given to Chief Constable White, Brighton, '• Sussex.— Bow- street, Jwrtfi- 30. Absconded from Chichester on the 20th instant, charged with stealing'Sheepskins: ISAAC TURNER, 29 years of age, 5 feet 7-} inches high, sallow complexion, grey eyes, dark ' brown hair, and has lost the first joint of right forefinger ; is in possession of a pedlar's certificate issued at the city of Chichester, js a militiaman, and gave the address No. 4, Regent's- court, Brighton : : also a man named SPRATT, an bid soldier, about 45' years of a^ e, dark hair and complexion. Supposed to be in company. Information to be given to Superintendent Pratt, County Police Station, Chichester, Sussex, who holds a warrant for their apprehension.— Bmo- street, June 3Q. Description of HENRY JOHNSON, who is charged with larceny at Bungay, Suffolk, and remanded till the 6th July : he is; 19 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, fair com- plexion, grey eyes, brown Ijair, states he is a native of Bristol. Information to be given to Inspector May, Bungay, Suffolk. — Bow- street, June 30. Absconded from Southampton, charged with stealing some Oats and a quantity of Rope, from a vessel lying in the River Itchen : JOHN WHITEWOOD, labourer, 35 years of age, 5 feet 6' inches high, brown hair, and sandy whiskers; dressed in dark monkey jacket, cord trousers, very much - patched, heavy lace- up boots, and dark billycock hat; he is accompanied by his wife and two children, she is 32 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, and pitted with small pox,; a boy, - about 4 years of age ; and a child in arms. Information to be given to Superintendent Breary, 1 Police Station, South- ampton, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, June 28. Stolen on the 26th instant, from No. 1, Stable Yard, St. James's Palace: twenty- four silver Table Spoons, shell pattern, crest— a'Tudor rose, and crown with lion inside garter with royal motto.— Metropolitan Police, A Division, June 28. Absconded on the ' 24tli instant, from No. 4, Hay's Place, Islington, embezzling .£ 4 : a journeyman jeweller, 26 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fair complexion, and light hair and moustache; dressed in dark grey tweed suit, side- spring boots, and round felt hat. Has friends residing at'No. 143, Grove Street, Camden Town.— Metropolitan Police, N Divi- sion, Jiine28.
