POLICE GAZETT CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received in eases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and, the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No.. 5052 MONDAY, JUNE 5, 1871. Wotiee.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may hear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to ME. W. D, BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, \ Y. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that ail Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all letters addressed to the Editor most be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Undor Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. FORGERY. Description of a man who gave the name of H. LEGARD, charged with forgery at Reading on the 25th ultimo : about 35 or 36 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, proportionate make, fair complexion, dark hair, dark grisly whiskers and moustache, gentlemanly appearance, and good address ; some- times dressed in dark, and sometimes in light clothes. Infor- mation to be given to Chief Superintendent Purchase, Police Office, Reading, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, June 5. ROBERT M'KAY HANSON, lately schoolmaster at Dahy, Kirkcudbrightshire, is charged with forgery and em- bezzlement : be is a native of Kildonan or Helmsdale, Suther- landshire, where it is said his mother resides, about 33 years of age, 5 feet 8| inches high, brown hair, whiskers, and moustache, blue eyes, large head, and stout build; dressed when he left in a light grey tweed shooting coat, vest, and trousers, and a brown overcoat. He was Inspector of Poor of the parish of Dairy, which place he left on the 9th instant, and has not since been heard of; he was schoolmaster at Clarencefield, Dumfriesshire, before going to Dairy, and it is said that his wife belongs to Wiltshire. Information to be given to the Chief Constable at Kirkcudbright, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, May 31. Information to be given to Superintendent Lambley, Swaff- ham, Norfolk.— Bow- street, June 5. Between 2 and 5 a. m. on the 27th instant, the dwelling- house of George Nathaniel Wilkinson, of Norton, near Stockton- on- Tees, in the county of' Durham, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : an old gilt. French hunting Watch, with a small pattern gold Guard attached ; an electro- plated Mustard Spoon, a briarroot Pipe, a Cigar Holder, 4d. in Copper, a pair of elastic- sido Boots, half worn, buttons up sides ; and a number of Cigars. By three men,, who were seen near the premises, and who absconded immediately after the robbery: CHARLES LUNGLEY, about 22 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, sallow complexion, very small eyes, brown hair, no whiskers, slight moustache, slender make, thin face, and sharp nose ; a painter ; dressed in a dark brown coat, dark vest with puce spots, light coloured trousers, and black billycock hat; CHARLES SNELLING, 20 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, pockpitted, dark hair cut short, no whiskers or moustache, and proportionate make ; a plasterer ; dressed in black coat and vest, fustian trousers, and black billycock hat; and HENRY HUGGINS, 18 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, pockpitted, dark hair, no whiskers or moustache, and proportionate make ; a bricklayer ; dressed in black coat, dark vest, cord trousers with raised seams dowu sides, and light coloured billycock hat. They are all natives of Notting- hill, London, and are supposed to be well- known there to the police. Information to be given to Super- intendent Booth, Stockton- on- Tees, Durham.— Bow- street, May 31. Between 12 p. m. and 6 a. m. on the 28th instant, the cottage of Miss Lucy Page, of Emberton, was feloniously entered, by taking a pane of Glass from the kitchen window, and the following articles stolen therein : three old silver tea Spoons, much worn; a table cloth, marked ' J. P.;' an unbleached ditto ; about 2 lbs. of Beef ; 1 lb. of Bacon ; 1 lb. of Cheese ; a small work Box, containing letters ; and four Eggs. Information to be given to Inspector Hall, Newport Pagnell, Bucks.— Bow- street, May 29. given to Superintendent Page, Surrey Constabulary, Dorking, or at the Police Station, Leatherhead.— Bow- street, May 31. Further information respecting the Horse stolen from the parish of Old Dalby, Leicestershire, between 11 a. m. on the 14th and 4 p. m. on the 15th instant ( advertised in the Police Gazette of the 17th instant), it is a light chesnut Horse, 3 years old, 14 hands high, white face, a little white on the off fore foot, white hind foot, switch tail, and in fair condi- tion. £ o reward will be paid on conviction of the offender and recovery of the horse. Information to be given to Super- intendent Platts, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire.— Bow- st., May 31. Stolen from the premises of Noah Allport, of Blower's Green, near Dudley, between 11 p. m. 26th and 5 a. m. on the 27th instant, a grey Pony, aged, about 12 hands high, in fail- condition, and has a hole in right ear ; also a set of Harness, brass- mounted, one Cart Saddle, and one Mullen, small spring Cart, painted chocolate, picked out with red, aud has a hole in tail board, ' Noah Allport,' on side of cart. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Burton, Borough of Dudley. — Bow- street, May 29. Stolen on the 18th instant, while grazing on Nantwich Barony, a black entire Donkey, with white nose and belly, one hind leg crooked, and about an inch of hair rubbed off the root of tail; the property of Thomas Burrows. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Laxton, Nantwich, Cheshire. — Bow- street, May 29. Found on the 19th instant, at Upper Penn, supposed to have been stolen : a dark brown mare Pony, 5 years old, about 12 hands high, bang tail, and iu good condition. Information to be given to Inspector Tomlinson, Sedgley, or to P. C. Wright, Upper Penn, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, May 26. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person at Wye Races on the 31st ultimo: a, silver hunting Watch, bow broken off, No. 1212, maker John Archer, London. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Noakes, Kent County Constabulary, Ashford, Kent. Bow street, June 5. Stolen from the person at Wye Races, on the 31st ultimo, silver lever hunting Watch, silver dial, gold figures, has ' Frederick Fisher, Snave, Kent,' in gold letters on dial. In- formation to- be given to Superintendent Noakes, Kent County Constabulary, Ashford.-— Bow- street, June 5. Stolen from the person of a gentleman in the borough of Glossop, during the night of the 27th ultimo, a patent lever silver Watch, No. 44014, cream- coloured dial, has had a small piece broken off it; had attached a gold Albert Guard, curb pattern, and a small gold Locket. Information to be given to Head Constable Beard, Town Hall, Glossop, Derbyshire.— Bow- street, June 2. Stolen from the person of a lady on the 22nd instant, between Blackburn and Brooks' Bar, Chorlton- road, Man- chester, Via Railway : a black velvet Purse, with steel clasps, small size, Containing two ,£ 100 Band of England Notes, the name ' Wm. Eccles' written on each Note, in a lady's hand writing, also the month and day, either ' April or May,' together with thirteen Sovereigns. Whoever will give such information as will lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the notes shall receive £ 20 reward, on application to Chief Constable Potts, Town Hall, Black bum.— Bow- street, May 29. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. . Further information respecting the man described in the Police Gazette of the 24th ultimo, charged with breaking into a house at Narborough ou tbe 13th ultimo : his name is HENRY NUTHALL, aud formerly resided with his parents in Bermondsey, who are dead ; he will be wearing the stolen trousers and boots, his own having been found concealed. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen from a meadow at the Half- way House, Challock, on the night of the 1st instant: a black Mare, 6 years old, 14 hands high, white hind feet, white blaze down the face, near fore knee chipped, slit in off nostril, long switch tail, and in good condition. Information to be given to Superintendent Noakes, Kent County Constabulary, ' Ashford.— Bow- street, June 5. Stolen from a field at Tanshelf, near Pontefract, York- shire, during the night of the 24th ult., a bay Pony, 14 hands high, white star on forehead, lumps on knees, the off one being longer than the other, and about 8 years old, the pro- perty of Alfred Wilson, of Pontefract. Information to be given to Superintendent Hall, West Riding Constabulary, Pontefract.— Brno- street, June 5. Found on the 21st ultimo at East Grinstead, supposed to be stolen, a brown nag Mare, aged, 14 hands high, both hind legs white, star on forehead, square- cut tail, and in rather low condition. Information to be given to Superintendent Kennard, East Grinstead.— Bm- street, June 5. Stolen from a field near Great Neston, a dark brown Mare, about 14 hands high, blind in near eye, white legs, hind legs white to the fetlocks, a little white above the hoofs of the fore legs, small star in the forehead, and small mark on the back where hurt with the saddle near the shoulders. Information to be given to Superintendent Egerton, Birken- head, or to i Sergeant Kerns, Great Neston, Cheshire.— Bow street, June 5. Found in the borough of Hertford, on the 28th ultimo, supposed to have been stolen, a Leicester Ewe, also a half- bred Lamb. Information to be given to the Head Constable, Hereford.— Bow- street, June 5. Description of a man charged with stealing a Horse from the Halfway House, Challock, on the night of the lst instant: A. PIKEY, about 22 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, thin face, light complexion, small sandy whiskers ; dressed in an old long dirty light coat, much torn, and old shoes cut down the front. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Nsakes, Kent County Constabulary, Ashford, Kent.— Bow- street, June 5. Stolen on the 25th instant, from a field at Walsall, a black cob Horse, aged, 13 hands high, white saddle marks on back, and in good condition. Information to be given to Chief Constable Cater, AValsall, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, May 31. Description of ROBERT DODDS, of Swaffham, harness maker, who absconded on or about the 23rd instant, charged on a warrant with stealing a pair of driving Reins, and a Whip, recovered : about 33 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, dark complexion, dark brown hair, large whiskers, hazel eyes, and a great impediment in his speech, is fond of drink, and will call on his trade for work. Information to be given to Superintendent Lambley, Swaffham, Norwolk,— Bow- street, May 31. Stolen from Ashtead, Surrey, on the night of the 26th instant : a large grey gelding Ass, very old, in low condition, recently shod, and has marks on the fore- legs, aa if at some time fired, the property of Mr. Brooks. Information to be LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Description of GEORGE WALL, who is charged with stealing 15s. in Money, the property of Maria Redgrave, of the borough of Ipswich, widow : about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, dark complexion, brown hair and whiskers; dressed in a loose grey overcoat, grey trousers, and high crown hat, very shabby. Had in his possession a Pedlars' Certificate, No. 194, granted for the borough of Ipswich, on the 29th of April, 1871, and endorsed for the county of Suffolk, on or about the same date. Information to be given to Head Constable Mason, Town Hall, Ipswich, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- sUeet, June 5. Description of CHARLOTTE MARIA RANDALL, a laundress, at Hereford, charged with being the bailee of a Shirt, a Slop, and other Articles, and converted the same to her own use : she is 43 years of age, 5 feet high, dark com- plexion, hair turning grey, hazel eyes, mole on left cheek, slightly marked with the small pox, and slight figure. Infor- mation to be given to the Head Constable, Hereford, who will pay all reasonable expenses upon her apprehension. - Bow- street, June 5. Absconded on the 24th ultimo, from Wappenham, North- amptonshire, charged with stealing seven Sovereigns; a double- cased verge Watch, maker Wells, Banbury, has ' Clark, Hornton,' engraved on inside case ; a steel Chain, with two brass Seals, J, J, and part of a Farthing attached, the property of Richard Clarke: JAMES CLARK, a navvy, about 21 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, stout build, dark swarthy complexion, black hair and eyes, no whiskers; dressed in a dark cloth monkey jacket, light cloth . vest, cotton cord trousers, lace- up boots, and woollen Scotch cap with peak of same material, and tuft on top ; he is a native of Croydon, Surrey, and worked last winter at the Imperial Gas Works, near King's- cross, London ; he was traced to Blisworth on the day of the robbery, where he took a ticket to Euston. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Osborn, or to Inspector Packer, Towcester, Northamptonshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, June 5. Stolen about mid day on the 31st ultimo, from the tap- room at the Bull Inn, Iver: a set of ivory Bagatelle Balls, nine in number, two red, one yellow, one black, and five white. By a man of the following description, about 5 feet 6 inches high, 55 years of age, thiu long face, small whiskers, meeting under chin ; dressed in a light tweed coat, soiled at the back, tight fitting cord trousers, black and white small check cap, with peak, is wearing two odd shoes, one an oxonion, the other a lace- up, with brass eyelets; has a peculiar expression in one eye, caused by the eyelid drooping, and is a stableman ; he was traced to Windsor, where he attempted to dispose of the balls at 5 p. m., on the 31st ultimo. Infor- mation to be given to Inspector Sutton, Iver, Bucks.— Bow- street, June 5. Absconded on the 24th ultimo, charged with stealing .£ 12 in Money from No. 42, Margaret- street, South Hackney : a man, 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, sallow complexion, sandy hair ( curly) and moustache ; dressed in white jumper, cord trousers, and grey cap ; supposed to be at Croydon.— Metropolitan Police, N Division, June 2. Stolen from the dwelling- house of Thomas Bolton, Crewe: a verge Watch, No. 5378, maker Hickman, Oxford, scratched on the back ' 17871, T. C. | 6.;' a black cloth Overcoat, four pockets outside and two inside breast; a double- barrel Pistol, one barrel above the other aud revolves, and has a spring trigger; a gold Pencil- case, about 4 inches long, much figured, with a white transparent crystal at the eud, has a small dent near the bottom ferrule ; also a gold signet Ring, with a bloodstone, has been broken and mended in two places, one with silver, the other with a gold patch ; the pro- perty of Thomas Cockrane, a lodger. By a man, who lodged there two nights, and left on the morning of the 26th ultimo, he is about 6 feet 1 or 2 inches high, dark complexion, black hair, whiskers, and moustache, cut short; dressed in dark blue coat, with blue velvet collar, dark elotji vestand trousers, striped shirt, and wears an albert chain ; gave,, the ljame of MURRAY, has a good appearance, and is going about taking lodgings at private houses, and represents himself as connected with some firm. Information to be given to Superintendent Laxton, Nantwich, or to Inspector Wood, Crewe, Cheshire. — Bow- street, June 2. Description of JAMES HILL, charged at Dumfries with . theft, of Watches and ot^ er Jewellery from his e. mpjvyer he appears to be from 35 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 ' inches high, slight build, swarthy complexion, black. hai » y moustache, and beard, clean shaven on cheeks, peculiar drooping nose, high forehead, small eyes, slightly bald on crown of head, rather round- shouldered, short- neck^ dy knock.- kneed, and turns his toes out when walking ; dressed in a brown or snuff- coloured monkey jacket or coat, with slit behind, slate- coloured trousers, worn at the feet, with a blaek patch in the seat, tartan cravat with bright breastpin, wide- awake hat with broad brim, which is worn well back on the head ; he is a watchmaker, a native of Edinburgh, and quick- spoken ; he has been employed about three weeks in Dumfries, and is believed to have worked in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Leeds, Newcastle, Whitehaven, and other towns, and to be known to a number of watchmakers. Information to be given to Superintendent Malcolm, Burgh Police, Dumfries, who, holds a, warrant tor. liis- apprehension.— Bow- street, June 2. Stolen from the dwelling- house of a gentleman, at Moss Side, Lancashire, between 4 and 6 p. m. on the 29th instant, the following property : a lady's gold Geneva Watch, white dial; a lady's gold Guard, plain pattern; a lady's gold Bracelet, ring pattern , twelve small silver Tea Spoon, about 3 inches long ; a lady's gold Locket, inlaid with hair; a silver watch Guard, made of small foreign coins ; a silver Needle- cape, two. Links: of coral Beads with gold snaps, and a. £ 5. Bftnk; of. England. By two men of the following description : one is about 22 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fair com- plexion, and light hair ; dressed in a brown cloth coat, dark trousers, and blaqic billycock hat; can be identified ; the other is. about 22 years of age., and 5 feet, 4 inches high ; dressed in dark clothes. £ 5 reward will be paid to any person giving such information as shall lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the property, or in proportion to the amount recovered. Information to be given at the Superintendent's Office, Old Trafford, Lancashire.— Bow- street, Mhy 31. Description of ALFRED V. PLEDGE, charged with stealing £ 5, the moneys of his master, CHARLES BRAN- DAUER, at Birmingham, on the 24th April last : 20 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, fair complexion, round face, and has a loose gait; dressed in a black surtout coat and brownish trousers." Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Glossop, Birmingham', who holds a warrant for his apprehen- sion.— Born- street, May 31. Absconded on the 25tli instant, from Warrington, Lanca- shire, charged with stealing six Sovereigns, the property of his employer : MARTIN CAlRNS, an Irishman, a discharged soldier, a butcher by trade, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 4| inches high, stout " build, fresh complexion ; dressed in a grey tweed suit and white billycock hat. Information to be given to Chief Constable Hunt, Warrington, Lancashire, who Holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, May 29. Description of HENRY MALCOLM, a tallyman, charged with embezzling the money of his master, James Milligan, at Brighton. He is about 24 years of age, 6 feet high, fair complexion, sandy hair a little curly, moustache, tuft of hair on chin, no whiskers, mark of erysipelas on nose; dressed in dark blue c^ t- away coat, double- breasted vest to match, light grey trousers, high hat; he has been in the army, Eind has a military Walk. Chief Constables and others issuing Pedlars' Certificates are requested to take notice, as he will probably apply to have his certificate endorsed, or to have a fresh one granted him. Information to be given to Chief Constable George White, Brighton, who has a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- Street, May 29. Description of THEODORE PRICE, a travelling wateh cleaner, charged on a warrant, for that he on the 13th May, 1871, at Bilston, being the bailee of a certain Watch, the pro- perty of John Pritehard, did fraudulently convert the same to his own use : he is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 ins. high, small sandy whiskers ; dressed in an old low felt hat, dkrk grteh long skirted coat, black vest, pinned in front, no buttons,, dark trousers, low shoes, is very talkative, and frequents low public- houses ; he was accompanied by a woman Who passes as his wife, 25 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high ; dressed in a dark jacket, trimmed with white ; both have a very shabby appearance. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent McCrea, Police Office, Bilston, Staffordshire.— BoW- street, May 26. Description of JOHN BURNELL, late of Ilkley, brewer's traveller, charged with embezzling at Otley £ 35, the property of William Brumfit, at Ilkley, on the 6th instant: be is 30 years of age, about 6 feet high, sallow complexion, high cheek bones, brown, eyes, dark brown hair and whiskers, and long moustache, a traveller, and a native of Ilkley, of good education, proportionately built, walks erect, has a gruff voice, and high prominent forehead ; dressed when last seen in drab tweed shooting coat, with velvet collar, trousers and vest of same material, high crowned hat, and spring- side boots ; he has served 12- years in the Royal Horse Artillery, and subsequently served as drill instructor, in the Wakefield Borough Police Force for several months. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Croft, West Riding Constabulary, Otley, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, May 26. at Yockleton Salop, an old- fashiened silver, verge. Watch, No, 2046, Blank, the watch was pawned at Shrewsbury, on the 5th instant, and redeemed on the 6th instant : he is about 40 years of age, about 5 feet 5 inches high, narrow features, and slightly poekpitted.; dressed in a shabby- genteel suit of black, high hat, boots patched; but well polished. Remanded at Malton, till the 10th instant, charged with larceny: HANNAH WILMOT, 44 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, sallow complexion, blue eyes, dark brown hair; dressed in black waist and brown linsey skirt, brown velvet bonnet, and old lace up boots ; states she is married, and a native, of. Garden- street, Hull, and that her husband is a miner, and a native of Bodmin, in Cornwall, and was working at. Penzance. in Cornwall, about 4 years ago, but has recently been working in a coalmine at Claycross, Derbyshire. Infor- mation to be. given to Superintendent Metcalfe, Constabulary Office,. Malton.— Bow- street, June 5. Description of a woman giving the name of MARY JANE WILLIAMS, who has been committed for trial at the next quarter sessions for the West Riding of. Yorkshire, charged with stealing a pair of Blankets from a public- house at Knottingley, where she lodged one night: about 30 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, brown hair, and grey eyes ; had on a lavender dress, black velveteen jacket, white straw hat with brown trimmings and feather, black veil, imitation gold cross with blue ribbon, wedding and other rings on finger, and black and white striped parasol ; plays the pianoforte; and may be a professional in public- houses, of respectable Informa- tion to be given to Chief Superintendent Barber, Police Station, Portsmouth.— Bow- street, June 5.
